Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets “Hallowed be Thy name” as a prayer that God’s name be glorified through the lives of the faithful rather than blasphemed because of them. Scripture’s appeal to the Creator of sight and hearing, together with the ordered structure of creation, supports belief in a personal and intelligent Creator. Christ perfectly glorified the Father, completed the work of salvation, and revealed the divine name, which the Holy Spirit will make known ever more deeply and eternally in God’s Kingdom.

Remember, we are still in Saint Cyril’s Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis, in which he attempts to explain the Lord’s Prayer—the familiar “Our Father”—to the newly illumined. So far, we have examined the meaning of “Father,” and “Our Father, who art in heaven.” We have seen that these words possess great depth—a depth which, I would venture to say, can never be exhausted, even through interpretation. “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.” In the twelfth paragraph we examined the words “hallowed be Thy name,” and we discussed many things concerning them. As Saint Cyril says here, always very briefly, we pray that God’s name may not be blasphemed because of us, but may instead be hallowed. And we saw that the hallowing of God’s name means nothing other than its glorification. For “hallowed” means “glorified.” This is how the Fathers of our Church interpret the word “hallowed.” Yet there is still something else we must consider. When He says, “hallowed,” what is to be hallowed? “Thy name.” May the name be hallowed.

That is, the name of God. But why does He say, “Thy name”? He does not say, “Thy person,” but “Thy name.” What is a name? We must dwell for a little while on the meaning of “name.”

Needless to say, even secular learning—and by secular we mean what lies outside the enclosure of the Church and outside the enclosure of Holy Scripture; something from outside, which is why we speak of secular wisdom and so forth—even in secular wisdom, or philosophy if you prefer, people understood that the concept of a “name” has great depth.

Aristotle and Plato both considered this question. Aristotle, indeed, said the following—according to human reasoning, of course, and as a human construct: every essence has a name. If we have three essences, we have three names. This is where the Arabs became entangled. Pay attention to this point. I mention it somewhat encyclopedically, simply so that you may gain a little broader knowledge. When the Arabs found the works of Aristotle in the Library of Alexandria...

The Library of Alexandria was burned by the Arabs, by Muhammad. In any case, Aristotle’s works survived, although he had been forgotten until then. If you did not know it, it was the Arabs who brought Aristotle out of obscurity. They studied him and held to the principle that however many persons there are, so many essences there must be. Then, when they encountered Christianity and the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, which teaches that there are three persons—allow me this expression for a moment, and forgive me for it—three names, three persons, three names—pay attention, because I shall correct this a little further on—

I speak this way only for the sake of developing the subject—and one essence, they asked: How can this possibly be? Aristotle says that three persons mean three essences. But three essences would mean three gods, and three gods would mean polytheism. And if we accept polytheism, how would that differ from idolatry? This was the obstacle at which Muhammad stumbled. So they rejected the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and adopted from Judaism the idea of one person and one God—or one God, monotheism, and one person. They could not understand, however, that this doctrine, like all doctrines, is a Mystery.

It is a profound Mystery, because they were trying to understand this Mystery through logic. That is, what could be more logical than one plus one plus one equals three? But the Mystery said: one plus one plus one equals one. Because philosophy was used in an attempt to understand the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, this terrible error arose, and Islam consequently grew into a power numbering one billion two hundred million people across our planet.

This happened precisely because the Mystery was not understood; they used Aristotle. You would never have imagined it. Note also that the Arabs used this same argument against Christianity in the West, not in the East. The West was therefore compelled to study Aristotle and Plato. Relying chiefly on Aristotle, the West began to read him in order to answer the Arabs—not now through warfare or military means, but on paper, through conversation, discussion, and philosophy. Thus was born...

the so-called scholastic theology of the West. Thomas Aquinas, who is regarded as the greatest theologian of the West, likewise relied on Aristotle in order to defend the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. The Arabs relied on Aristotle, and Thomas Aquinas—Western theology—also relied on Aristotle. There was error on the one side and error on the other. The Church—the Orthodox Church—has never used philosophy as a crutch. Never, ever. She may simply employ certain terminology, or she may not. But, as I said, the doctrines are the Mysteries of God. This...

Do you know what it means to be Orthodox? It means many, many, very many things. And I have not even mentioned the danger posed by Origen, who went far beyond certain boundaries and used philosophy—not Aristotelian philosophy this time, but Platonic philosophy. Platonic philosophy. This man, the otherwise admirable Origen, the greatly beloved Origen, who could truly move people and continues to move them even today, went astray. The Church was therefore compelled, in the person of Origen, to condemn Platonic philosophy. Certain elements may be used briefly for the sake of a formulation—a term, some terminology, or something similar.

Revelation has no need of philosophy. That is, it does not need human reason in order to be understood. God’s revelation is always understood and always approached as a Mystery. This is why only the Saints understand Christianity—only the Saints—not those rationalists who would seek to comprehend the Mystery of Christianity through reason alone.

It eludes them. I shall use a very beautiful saying of Carrel—just a few words. He was a modern man, though he has now died. He said it about something else, but it has just come to mind, and I can tell it to you. Those who try to understand God through their logic find that God is always behind them. They cannot see Him. They turn around, and God turns again and remains behind their backs. God is not approached through rationalism—that is, through human reasoning and logic.

This does not mean that the nous, the spiritual intellect, is not used in understanding the Mysteries of God, or that God is not also approached through the nous. Far from it! God created the nous. It is one thing for the nous to serve as an instrument, understanding whatever it is able to understand; it is another for the nous to recognize that it has human limits.

The Second Coming, Diadochos of Photike,

The realm of faith and revelation. For if the human nous could understand everything, God’s revelations would be unnecessary. This is Orthodoxy, and what I am telling you now is foundational. But in making this digression, I wanted to show you that we often walk upon ground whose implications we do not even suspect. Could you have imagined that so many things were connected with the subject of the “name,” or that immense movements such as Islam could arise in history around it? Can you imagine it? And that Aristotle could be used in this way?

Aristotle—and that even the West, by using Aristotle, could arrive through Thomas Aquinas at a rationalistic understanding of the Gospel, the so-called scholastic theology, which stands apart from Orthodox theology? Do you see? These are immense questions, truly immense. But let that suffice. I shall return to the subject of the “name.” “Hallowed be Thy name.” The word, then—the term “name”—contains great richness. To tell you the truth, I wanted to pass over it and move on today to “Thy Kingdom come.” But when I mentioned this to the brethren at the monastery, they said to me...

“Have you spoken about the name?” “No,” I replied, “I shall pass over it.” “But you have not spoken about the name.” So, out of obedience, I shall speak to you about the name. A name expresses a person. Of course, we also use names for objects: “table” is a name.

We say “cat,” “dog,” or “house”; these are names. When we utter a name, it necessarily forms within us an image of a concept. I do not need to bring a cat here in order to speak to you about it; I need only say its name. It is a name.

Indeed, in grammar we call it a noun. I say “cat,” and all of you know what a cat is. Your mind turns to a cat because you possess the concept. On another occasion I gave you an example: two cats are having a conversation. They talk and talk, and one cat says to the other, “Look, there is a fierce dog in the neighboring yard. How terrified I was when I entered that yard! The dog chased me, and I did not know which way to escape. So be careful not to go into the neighboring yard, or you will be in danger.” One cat says all this to the other. No, my beloved, animals do not hold conversations, because they lack concepts. Only the human person forms concepts.

Animals do not; only the human person does. And so, when we utter a name, through it we express either an object or a person. Here, of course, we are speaking of a person. Therefore, when we say, “Hallowed be Thy name,” we mean that God is personal.

What does it mean to say that God is personal? This is an enormous subject. Consider what is called pantheism. What is pantheism? It is the worship of the whole as God. In other words, if the whole of nature—everything that exists—is God, then pantheism cannot speak of God as a person, because everything is God: the sun, the moon, the waters, and the rivers. When the ancient Greeks and other peoples personified the sun, Mount Olympus, or the River Nile in Egypt—they personified them, though they were not persons—we have pantheism. That is, we accept that the whole is God. But we need no philosophy to understand that such a god has no consciousness. Does the River Nile know that it is God? Does the sun know that it is God? My dear friends, if you ask me whether pantheists still exist today—

Of course they do. Perhaps you are thinking of Buddhists. But what would you say if I told you that countless Christians have abandoned the holy, personal God and ended up believing in an impersonal god? Let me give you a ready example: Freemasonry. Do you know what its theology is? Pantheistic. They speak of “the Great Architect of the Universe” and say that it is the sun. Is the sun a person? Could the sun have a conversation with the moon, like the two cats in the example I gave you earlier? The very idea is foolish. Nothing could be more foolish or irrational.

What could be more irrational than accepting a god who has no consciousness of himself—in other words, who is not a person? This is the greatest delusion a human being could embrace. Do you hear that? How pitiable the Freemasons are! Truly, terribly pitiable. They have abandoned the personal God. You may ask, “Why? Can there really be such foolishness?” Certainly there can. But if, as Fichte says, philosophical systems are the histories of our hearts, then it would suit someone who turns away from Christianity, from the revealed, holy, Triune God, to leave Him behind.

Such a person will worship the G.A.O.T.U.—the Great Architect of the Universe—the impersonal god. Do you know why? Because this impersonal god will not hold you accountable for your moral life. Did you hear that? That is the reason. That is the reason. But the holy, Triune God will hold us accountable. Christ will come and judge the world. Yet I do not like judgment; I want to live however I please. This is what makes people abandon the living God and turn to pantheism. Do you understand, please? Do you think it is difficult to arrive at pantheism? It is very easy, provided that a person wants to live according to his own wishes, however he pleases.

He does not want, in his selfishness and pride, to submit to this personal God. God, then, is personal. There is a beautiful—truly beautiful—verse from the Psalms that I regard as a foundation, a foundation of reason itself, unless our reason changes. You know that it is possible for the way we reason to change. Our logic rests on the familiar four categories, an Aristotelian principle. Is it not logical that, if this watch is here, it cannot also be somewhere else—here, or here, or here?

Forgive me for going a little further into this; it does not matter. When Heisenberg came here shortly before 1970—he had come two or three times—this great German scientist, who formulated the uncertainty principle, gave a lecture. The lecture was recorded in writing, and I found an article about it in a magazine. He said the following: Suppose we have a box divided into two halves. In this part of the box, I have an electron.

My reason tells me that, if the electron is here, then it is not in the other half of the box. Of course, when I am here, I am not at home; and when I am at home, I am not here. That is perfectly logical. And now, Heisenberg says, I must tell you that the electron is in both halves of the box: in this one and in the other. How can that be? He said that we must either change the laws of logic or change our manner of speaking, our terminology, the way we express it. In any case, this is what we observe: the electron is both here and there. I would put it to you very simply: if, within this created—

nature, we can speak of things that surpass logic and go beyond its four categories, how much more must this be true of matters belonging to the uncreated God? This is evident. Take, then, the verse from the Psalms, which is the product of elementary reason. If you wish, the Mystery is revealed to us by God; but whatever lies within the reach of our reason, we must understand with our reason. God does not abolish reason, as I told you. He abolishes rationalism.

Rationalism is a sickness of reason. The verse from the Psalms says, to put it simply: “He who made the eyes, does He not see? He who made the ears, does He not hear?” You, a human being, are a person because you both see and hear. And there are billions of animals alive at this very moment—many millions, even trillions, if you count every mosquito, every fly, and every insect. They have eyes and ears as well. I do not think you could simply catch a fly. Try reaching out your hand to catch one. It sees you—and how well it sees you—with those two great compound eyes, like those of the bee. They contain six thousand lenses.

Thousands of tiny eyes—six thousand lenses. It sees far more than we do with our two lenses. My dear friends, what do you say? Does the One who made eyes and ears neither see nor hear nor understand? Could you possibly stand in prayer and say, “And now, who hears me? God? How does He hear me?” God is personal; He is a person, and that is why He hears you. If He were not a person—if He were the sun or nature—then of course neither the sun nor nature would hear you. God is a person. He has sight and hearing; otherwise, how could He have given you eyes and ears with which to see and hear? These are unshakable arguments.

They are arguments of simple, ordinary reason. Would you like another? It is what the Apostle Paul says in Hebrews: “Every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.” I have told you this before and even used a broader example, but I will not repeat it now, so as not to tire you. Every house, he says, is built by someone. The One who made all things is God. What does “house” mean? Do you know? It means a rationally ordered structure. And what does that mean? It has a door and windows. You cannot make a house merely by piling up mud and stones. Would that be a house? When I see a window and a door, I say, “Someone must be meant to enter this structure.” Why else would the door and window be there? The window is there to let in light.

So this is a rationally ordered structure. If I cannot accept that a house was made by no one, how much less can I say that the whole of creation—with all the rational order in its structure—came about by chance? Do you understand, my dear friends? Of course, we could say much more about this and about the theory of probability. It would not take long, but we have strayed from our subject. The one point is this: God is personal; God is a person. Therefore, He both sees and hears. Yet when we speak specifically of God, His name defines Him without defining Him.

This applies especially to God. Suppose I am absent and one gentleman says to another, “You know Father Athanasios?” At once our thoughts turn to Father Athanasios. Who is he? A man who wears a cassock, a priest of a certain height, weight, and age. What am I doing? I say “Father Athanasios”: I have my name, I am identifiable, and I have my particular characteristics. But God is identified as personal without being defined. What does that mean? It brings us to those theological expressions that are apophatic, expressions of negative theology. Anyone who is a theologian will understand me here. They are apophatic because they express that you cannot describe God in an ordinary, affirmative way. This is what “apophatic” means, as opposed to “cataphatic.” We encounter such expressions at every turn. The Divine Liturgy is filled with apophatic expressions. Do we not say that God is ineffable? Do we not say that He is indescribable and incomprehensible? What does the privative prefix at the beginning of these words mean? It means that God is identified without being defined. When you say, “God is great,” how great is He? Forgive me, but is God not great? Do we not say so? In everyday speech we say, “God is great.” But how great?

Ask a little child, “Do you love me?” “I love you.” “How much do you love me?” “This much,” the child says, stretching out his arms. What does “this much” mean? The child is indicating how much he loves us. So when I say, “God is great,” how great is He? We say, then, “How great is God?” “Great.” The statement “God is great” is what we would call a cataphatic, affirmative answer. But we cannot comprehend how great God is, and so we turn to an apophatic answer—one that expresses our lack of knowledge. Great—but how great? We cannot say. How great? Who can comprehend what “great” means here? And so we express ourselves with words such as “ineffable”—

“indescribable,” and “incomprehensible.” Please remember the prayers of the Great Blessing of Water. Remember the prayers of Pentecost, and especially those of the Great Blessing of Water, where we say—do you know how many terms, how many words, have an apophatic meaning? And at the end, after all these things have been said, we say, “the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,” and so forth. Thus, when we say, “Hallowed be Thy name,” the name of God does identify the personal God, but in an undefined way. This applies uniquely to God, because God is not a created being.

He is beyond everything created and beyond all reason. Indeed, Saint Dionysius the Areopagite—I once told you that I would explain this, but I did not—uses the word “supra-divine,” meaning “God beyond God.” Ah, but this does not refer to a God who is above the gods of the pagans, as one might suppose. No, no. Because the word “God” is itself a cataphatic, affirmative expression, he uses the term “supra-divine.” You may even find it in some of the hymns of our Church. “Supra-divine” means beyond what we ordinarily call God, since the term “god” was also used of the pagan gods.

It means something far beyond the very concept of “God.” We also have the term “superessential”: He who transcends every essence—that is, every created essence, visible or invisible, and so forth. You understand, then, my dear friends, that the name of God truly identifies God, yet does so without defining Him. Now you will understand what this apparently contradictory expression means: it identifies Him without defining Him. And what is the name of God? Pay attention: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the name of God. Christ said at the end of the Gospel according to Matthew, “Go into all the world,” He told His disciples, “baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” So what is the name of God? Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Notice that here we have three names. Yes, I said something earlier that was not entirely correct, but how else could I express it then? Now the time has come to explain it. We have three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. When we speak of the person of the Father, and when we speak—therefore, what is the name of that person?

The Father. What is the name of the person of the Son? The Son. What is the name of the person of the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit. Since we have three persons, then, we have three names. In one sense, we can say that: three names. And yet it is one name. The Father is a person, and the Son is a person. Here is the Mystery of the Holy Trinity, the incomprehensible Mystery that seemed utterly incomprehensible to the Arabs of that time and to others. The Father is a person, the Son is a person, and the Holy Spirit is a person. Yet the name is one, because God is one. Thus, in this verse spoken by the Lord—

He revealed the full truth that God is Triune and yet one, because the name is one. This is why He did not say, “Baptizing them in the names of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” but “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Three persons, three names; one name, one God.

The name of the Father was glorified as it ought to be—do you grasp those words, “as it ought to be”?—by the Son. Do you grasp it? We neither grasp nor comprehend what “as it ought to be” means: in a way worthy of the value of the Father’s name. Whatever we may do, my dear friends, the only One who glorified the Father’s name as it ought to be is the Son. He did so through His incarnation. What does He say in the Gospel according to John? “I glorified Thee on the earth”—John 17:4. “I,” He says, “glorified Thee on the earth.”

“Let it be glorified,” “let it be hallowed,” “I have hallowed You,” we might say—that is, “I have glorified You.” It means the same thing: “I have glorified You on earth.” To what extent? To the extent that only the Son could, and to the extent that the Father would receive this glory. The Son glorified the Father because He completed the work of salvation. Again, in John 17:4, in the same passage, He says: “I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.” The work You entrusted to Me, I have completed. Do you know what “I have completed” means? I brought it to its end. And what does “to its end” mean? To perfection, leaving nothing

that could be called incomplete. I brought to perfection the work You entrusted to Me. Furthermore, the Son—and you know, we could dwell on these things again and again, but we would never finish—also revealed this name of God. The name of God that we speak of when we say, “Hallowed be Thy name,” was revealed by the Son alone—not by an angel or a saint, but by the Son alone. And what does the Son say? John 17:6: “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world.” I made Your name known to the people whom You gave Me out of the world.

Out of the world. And further on—yes, further on—in John 17:26: “And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it.” I have made it known. To declare means to make known; so, “I have declared” means, “I have made Your name known.” That is in the past tense. But He also uses the future: “and will declare it.” Why? You will understand through an example. Until now, we would say that we knew God. Through what you are hearing now, do you know something more about God? Without question, yes. This is what “and will declare it” means.

Through the Holy Spirit, throughout history, Your name will continually become more deeply known—not more broadly, but more profoundly. And this knowledge of the name of God will continue forever in the Kingdom of God. This knowledge will go on without end—never, never ending, for the Kingdom of God is everlasting. And this revelation, according to the words “and will declare it,” this knowledge of the name of God, will not be knowledge gained as though we were sitting at a desk or in a chair while someone taught us. Rather, it will be something that—if I may use the word—flows forth: the divine uncreated energies, giving blessedness to those who will be citizens of the Kingdom of God. They will bestow blessedness. It is like saying, “I know the sun,” while the sun also gives me warmth, gives me light, and produces all the effects it produces, including chemical reactions.

So, “I have declared it, and I will declare it.” The imperfect human being can know God only forever and ever, without ever exhausting that knowledge, unto the ages of ages. For God is… You know, the word “infinite” is not truly fitting for God. It is not fitting.

It refers to things within the created world. Yes, when applied to God, “infinite” means that He has no boundary.

He has no end and no point at which He stops. Yet God is far beyond even what we call infinite. Thus we see that the Son reveals the true name of God. And what is this name of God, which man is now called to believe in, receive, and know? It is the Holy Trinity, as I told you before. By this name man now lives. “And that believing,” the Lord says to the Father, “you may have life”… No, He is addressing the disciples—forgive me. “In His name”—it is John the Evangelist who says this; forgive me. That you may have life in His name. Thank you very much.

By this name the faithful are saved. The Apostle says: “You were justified.” Justification—we spoke of it yesterday in the talk—righteousness, justification: to justify here means salvation, to save. “You were justified,” that is, you were saved, “in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” First Corinthians 6:11. By this name the faithful live, are saved, and are glorified. And He says: “Those who glorify Me I will glorify.” Look: those who glorify Me, I will glorify. This is in First Kingdoms, in the Old Testament, chapter two,

verse thirty. Furthermore, the name of God is almighty—almighty. I will give you three passages, three verses, from Psalm 117. They are beautiful verses. “All the nations surrounded me,” it says. Here Israel, the people, is personified and speaks: “All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.” How did I defend myself? By the name of the Lord, when the nations moved to surround me.

This is what I have told you, my dear ones, and I tell you again: if we Greeks lived here consistently as Orthodox Christians, we would not fear the Philistines beside us—the Turks. We would fear nothing. Nothing. They would still exist, and we would still live here, but no one would be able to trouble us. Nor would there be any danger of our nation shrinking. Who can persuade us that there is no danger of such a contraction when those around us would like to seize what is ours? We live with this fear; we feel it intensely. In that case, if we lived as God desired,

we could use this verse: “All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.” I defended myself by the name of the Lord. A second verse from the same Psalm says: “Surrounding me, they surrounded me.” Notice that this is one idea expressed—as we say, one through two—in two forms. Strictly speaking, that is not what we have here, but allow me to put it this way. In our grammar, there is no such construction: one idea presented in three images, three expressions. “Surrounding me, they surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.” “Surrounding me, they surrounded me.” This is a Hebraism. In ordinary Greek we would simply say, “They surrounded me.” But here…

the encircling, the complete surrounding, is emphasized because it is stated twice: first with the participle “surrounding,” and then with the verb “they surrounded me.” Sometimes we similarly use a verb together with a noun and say, “I rejoice with joy”: we use both the verb and the noun. Here it says, “surrounding,” as a participle, “they surrounded me.” It describes an intense situation: they closed in on me; they encircled me. “But in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.” The third instance says: “They surrounded me like bees around a honeycomb; they blazed like a fire among thorns, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.”

He uses the image of a honeycomb. Beekeepers must know this image very vividly and intimately. The Greek word here means the honeycomb, with the honey inside its cells. Think of how the bees swarm over the honeycomb, whether they are working, feeding, or whatever else they may be doing. He says, “They surrounded me as bees surround a honeycomb.” The bees, so to speak—the enemies—fell upon me. Then my enemies were set ablaze and burned up “like a fire among thorns.” How do thorns burn?

Dry thorns quickly catch fire. “But in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.” By the name of the Lord, he says, I defended myself. This is beautiful. The name of the Lord, then, is almighty. We can make use of these verses. But would you like something simpler? It is the short, single-phrase Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” It has two parts. The first is theological: “Lord Jesus Christ.” The second is practical:

“Have mercy on me.” If you leave out the first part, “Lord Jesus Christ,” then “have mercy on me” falls into a void, because the words “have mercy on me” must be addressed on the basis of certain attributes of the person of Jesus Christ.

There are three of them. What are they? “Lord.” With the word “Lord,” we confess the divinity of the person of Christ. Lord. “Jesus.” With the name Jesus, we confess the human nature of Christ. Lord Jesus. “Christ”—with this, we express…

This is what Christ means: Messiah. It expresses His messianic work—that is, salvation.

It is the work of the incarnate Word (Logos) of God. So in just a few words we confess that He is the Lord, the second person of the Holy Trinity, who became man and received the name Jesus, and that His work was to save us: He is the Messiah. If these three things are not included, then whatever else you say in the second part falls into a void.

“Have mercy on me.” This too is concentrated in a few words, because we do not know what to ask from the Lord; we do not know what is truly for our good. “Lord Jesus Christ, give me food.” Yes, but you might become ill if you eat, or if He gives you too much food. That is why we say, “Have mercy on me.” You know, Lord, what You should give us.

So you see the short, single-phrase Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” In a certain sense, if you wish, we may also use other words—and this is taught to us by the experience of the Fathers, by the Psalter, and so on. Somewhere in his homilies, Saint Isaac the Syrian says—and not only in one place, but in many—“Lord, You shall enlighten the darkness of my soul.” You will illumine the darkness of my soul. This is a verse from the Psalms. Being taught by this, I can therefore say—but always beginning with “Lord Jesus Christ”—“You shall enlighten the darkness of my soul.” “Lord Jesus Christ, help me to understand Your divine Word.” “Lord Jesus Christ”…

That is right. “Lord Jesus Christ, forgive me.” “Lord Jesus Christ, help my friend, my neighbor.” “Lord Jesus Christ.” And instead of the general phrase, “have mercy on me,” when we have some particular need, we can ask for something specific: save me, help me, hasten to my aid, illumine me. But we shall always begin by saying... In another case, when there is no need for such brevity, we also have what we might call the fuller form: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God.” The short, condensed form, abbreviated no further, is: “Lord Jesus Christ.” Through this name, my dear friends, we prevail; we become all-powerful, if we truly believe in the divine-human person of Christ, the God-Man.

Let a person call upon His name, and he will see miracles; he will even be able to face wild beasts. A dog may be charging at you; say, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me,” and you will see the dog become powerless. And now, my dear friends, let us conclude this chapter on the subject of the “name”—“Hallowed be Thy name”—with something immense, something great and deeply moving. Those who call upon the name of God, those who believe in the name of God, those who labor so that the name of God may be glorified... Do you wish to see God’s loving-kindness and love? He takes His own name and inscribes it

upon my forehead, making me—a poor man formed from clay—a sharer in His own name. Listen to how it is expressed. This is found in more than one place, but I shall mention only one: Revelation 14:1. “And I looked, and behold,” says John the Evangelist, “the Lamb”—that is, Jesus Christ—“standing on Mount Zion”—Mount Zion is the Church—“and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand,” which is twelve times twelve thousand. It is a symbolic number signifying a multitude upon multitude upon multitude.

Even one hundred may signify a multitude, and one thousand may signify a multitude, as when Holy Scripture speaks of “a thousand years” and says, “a thousand years as one day.” But twelve times twelve thousand—one hundred and forty-four thousand—expresses a multitude upon multitude upon multitude. Indeed, Saint John describes them elsewhere as “a multitude that no one could number.” They are the faithful. These 144,000 have “His name.” Whose name is meant by “His”? Who is the subject? Christ. “And His Father’s name”—the name of Christ’s Father, God the Father, to whom we say, “Our Father”—written

on their foreheads. This is the culmination of everything we have said. If God has illumined, helped, and shown mercy so that anything worthwhile might be spoken, this is the culmination. It is the supreme expression of God’s love and God’s wisdom: that He should place His own glorified name upon our foreheads. What could we say, my dear friends? What could we possibly say when we pray, “Hallowed be Thy name”? May we be conscious of the great depth and the awe-inspiring dimensions of this meaning, so that we may glorify the Holy Trinity, and so that He too may come

and glorify us. Thank you for listening.

Τι θα πει προσωπικός Θεός; Τεράστιον θέμα. Γιατί, αν δεχθείτε ότι υπάρχει ο λεγόμενος πανθεϊσμός, τι είναι ο πανθεϊσμός; Η λατρεία του παντός ως Θεού. Δηλαδή, αν το παν, η φύσις, όλα αποτελούν Θεόν, ο πανθεϊσμός ΛΥΜ ΖΕΣΕ ΤΑ ΘΕΩ πρόσωπο, γιατί τα πάντα είναι Θεός: και ο ήλιος και η σελήνη και τα νερά και τα ποτάμια. Όταν οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες και μη Έλληνες προσωποποιούσαν —προσωποποιούσαν, δεν ήσαν πρόσωπα όμως— τον ήλιο, τον Όλυμπο, τον Νείλο ποταμό στην Αίγυπτο, έχουμε πανθεϊσμό. Δηλαδή, δεχόμεθα ότι το παν είναι Θεός. Αλλά δεν χρειάζεται φιλοσοφία για να καταλάβουμε ότι δεν έχει συνείδηση ένας τέτοιος Θεός. Δεν έχει συνείδηση. Έχει ο Νείλος ποταμός συνείδηση ότι είναι Θεός; Έχει ο ήλιος συνείδηση ότι είναι Θεός; Αγαπητοί μου, αν με ρωτήσετε, υπάρχουν σήμερα πανθεϊστές;

Να μην θέλει, εγωιστής ων και υπερήφανος, να υποταχθεί εις αυτόν τον προσωπικόν Θεόν. Ώστε, λοιπόν, ο Θεός είναι προσωπικός. Υπάρχει ένας ωραίος, ωραιότατος ψαλμικός στίχος που θεωρώ θεμέλιον, θεμέλιον της λογικής. Εκτός αν αλλάξει η λογική μας. Ξέρετε ότι υπάρχει περίπτωση να αλλάξει η λογική μας. Είναι στηριγμένη η λογική μας στα γνωστά τέσσερα κατηγορήματα, αριστοτελική αυτή η αρχή, αριστοτελική, στα τέσσερα κατηγορήματα. Λογικό δεν είναι, όταν αυτό το ρολόι είναι εδώ, να μην είναι εδώ ή εδώ ή εδώ;

αυτόν απροσδιόριστα, ειδικά για τον Θεό. Διότι, αν πείτε, εγώ απουσιάζω και πει ένας κύριος με έναν άλλον κύριο «Ξέρεις ο πατήρ Αθανάσιος;», πάει το μυαλό μας στον πατέρα Αθανάσιο. Ποιος; Ένας άνθρωπος, φοράει ράσα, είναι ιερεύς, είναι τόσο ύψος, τόσο βάρος, τέτοια ηλικία. Τι κάνω εγώ; Ο πατήρ Αθανάσιος, έχω το όνομά μου. Εγώ προσδιορίζομαι, έχω τα χαρακτηριστικά μου. Ο Θεός προσδιορίζεται ως προσωπικός απροσδιόριστα. Τι θα πει αυτό; Είναι εκείνες οι εκφράσεις οι θεολογικές, οι αποφατικές. Όποιος είναι θεολόγος με καταλαβαίνει τώρα. Οι αποφατικές, οι οποίες εκφράζουν κατά τρόπον ότι δεν μπορείς να εκφραστείς έτσι. Αυτό θα πει αποφατικός, όχι καταφατικός. Είναι, λοιπόν, εκείνες οι εκφράσεις, οι αποφατικές, που τις συναντάμε σε κάθε βήμα. Μέσα στη Θεία Λειτουργία έχουμε πλησμονή αποφατικών εκφράσεων. Δεν λέμε ότι ο Θεός είναι ανέκφραστος; Δεν λέμε απερίγραπτος; Απερινόητος; Αυτό το στερητικό άλφα μπροστά, τι θα πει; Θα πει ότι προσδιορίζεται ο Θεός απροσδιόριστα. Όταν θα πεις «Ο Θεός είναι μεγάλος», πόσο μεγάλος; Δεν είναι, με συγχωρείτε, μεγάλος ο Θεός; Δεν το λέμε; Το λέμε στην καθημερινότητα: «Μεγάλος ο Θεός». Πόσο μεγάλος;

Αλλά κάτι πολύ πιο πάνω από την έννοια Θεός. Υπάρχει σε μας ο όρος «υπερούσιος». Υπερούσιος, αυτός που υπερέχει πάσης ουσίας, κτιστής εννοείται, ορατής και αοράτου, και λοιπά και λοιπά και λοιπά. Αντιλαμβάνεσθε, λοιπόν, αγαπητοί, ότι το όνομα του Θεού προσδιορίζει μεν τον Θεό απροσδιορίστως. Τώρα θα καταλάβατε τι θα πει αυτό που μοιάζει εκ πρώτης όψεως αντιφατικό, ότι προσδιορίζει απροσδιορίστως. Και ποιο είναι το όνομα του Θεού; Προσέξτε: Πατήρ, Υιός, Άγιον Πνεύμα. Αυτό είναι το όνομα του Θεού. Είπε ο Χριστός, έτσι τελειώνει το κατά Ματθαίον Ευαγγέλιο: «Πηγαίνετε», λέει, «σε όλη την οικουμένη», είπε στους μαθητάς Του, «βαπτίζοντες αυτούς εις το όνομα του Πατρός και του Υιού και του Αγίου Πνεύματος». Ώστε, λοιπόν, ποιο είναι το όνομα του Θεού; Πατήρ, Υιός, Άγιον Πνεύμα. Προσέξτε, εδώ έχουμε τρία ονόματα. Ναι, προηγουμένως σας είπα κάτι, δεν το λέω σωστά, αλλά πώς να το εκφράσω; Τώρα ήρθε η στιγμή να σας το πω. Έχουμε τρία πρόσωπα. Είναι ο Πατήρ, είναι ο Υιός, είναι το Άγιο Πνεύμα. Όταν λέμε το πρόσωπο του Πατρός, όταν λέμε... Συνεπώς, ποιο το όνομα του προσώπου;

Παίρνει την εικόνα της κηρήθρας. Οι μελισσουργοί πρέπει να έχουν πολύ έντονη την εικόνα αυτή και οικεία. Πώς οι μέλισσες είναι πάνω... κηρίον είναι η κηρήθρα, που είναι το μέλι μέσα στις κυψελίδες. Πώς οι μέλισσες είναι κατά πάνω, θα λέγαμε, στην κηρήθρα, γιατί δουλεύουν ή τρώνε ή ό,τι κάνουν τέλος πάντων. Πάνω στην κηρήθρα, λέγει, με κύκλωσαν όπως οι μέλισσες την κηρήθρα. Έπεσαν, θα λέγαμε, απάνω οι μέλισσες, δηλαδή οι εχθροί, και εξεκαύθησαν και πήραν φωτιά οι εχθροί μου, «ως πυρ εν ακάνθαις», όπως ακριβώς είναι η φωτιά στις αγκαθιές. Πώς καίγονται τα αγκάθια;
