Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis explains the Lord’s Prayer to the newly baptized within the sacramental life of Baptism, Chrismation, and the Eucharist. Heaven also recalls humanity’s lost homeland in Paradise, but Christian remembrance rests on humanity’s creation in God’s image rather than Plato’s teaching about preexistent souls and knowledge as recollection. “Hallowed be Thy name” asks not that God become holy, since He is holy by nature, but that His name be glorified through believers’ holiness, honesty, patience, and visible good works.

My beloved, we are still studying the Catecheses of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem, and have reached paragraph eleven of his Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis. He is speaking about the “Our Father,” the so-called Lord’s Prayer, and is trying, in a few words, to give an outline of its meaning for those who had received catechesis and had now been baptized. Let me remind you of something I have mentioned before: these Mystagogical Catecheses were delivered beginning on the day of Pascha.

From the second day of Pascha through the Friday of Pascha, these five Mystagogical Catecheses were delivered over the course of five days. They are called mystagogical because they initiate us into the spiritual life of the Church and into the Mysteries of the Church, especially three Mysteries: Baptism, Chrismation, and the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Last time, we saw the wealth contained in the invocation of the Lord’s Prayer—and it is called the Lord’s Prayer because the Lord taught it—the invocation, “Our Father.”

“Our Father, You who are in heaven,” or, “in the heavens.”

We have already explained and seen what Saint Cyril tells us about the words “Father” and “our”—“Our Father”—and also that the heavens are none other than what he describes so beautifully: “The heavens are also those who bear the image of the heavenly Man, in whom God dwells and walks.” What, then, are the heavens? As he says, the first man was of the earth, while the second Man was...

Heavenly: Jesus Christ. Therefore, as the Apostle Paul says, just as we have borne the image of the man of dust—and he says this in his First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 15, verse 49—so shall we also bear the image of the heavenly Man. Saint Cyril wishes to tell us here that the heavens are God’s dwelling place; that is, so to speak, the place where God’s glory is revealed, where His will is done, and so forth. But since God is present everywhere, and since His will is done, as it is in heaven...

As a later petition says, “so also on earth,” where it is done on earth by human beings, then every human heart becomes heaven. God dwells in the heavens, but He also dwells in every person; and as we bear the image of the heavenly Man, we already become God’s dwelling place, His habitation—we become His heavens. This is an exceedingly beautiful teaching, as you have seen, and Saint Cyril emphasizes it strongly. Last time we also quoted, “We will come to him and make Our home with him.” The Triune God will come...

And make the human person His dwelling place. Or, as Saint Cyril quotes: “I will dwell in them and walk among them.” “I will dwell,” God says, “and I will walk among them,” which indicates a dynamic presence. That is what “I will walk” means: I will not remain seated; I will walk. It is the dynamic presence of God within the human person. There are still other reasons why we say, “Our Father, who art in heaven.” Since God is present everywhere—everywhere present—we cannot confine Him to heaven. You know that God does not look down from heaven. We often use the expression that God looks down from heaven.

A verse from the Psalms says, “God looked down from heaven to see what the sons of men were doing.” “He looked down,” as though heaven had a window and God were bending down through it to see what is happening below on earth. Yet when God sees something, He does not see it as we do. I see you now, but I am not within you; there is a distance between us. God does not see in that sense. God is present everywhere; He is present in every place. When we say, “I see,” we speak of something at a distance from us. But because God is present everywhere, we cannot say that He sees in that same way. Nevertheless, there is...

The anthropomorphic expression that God sees. Thus, God is present everywhere, but in heaven His glory is openly revealed. What is this heaven? A Father of our Church says: it is where sins have ceased, where there are no sins. What is this heaven? It is where death does not exist. What is this heaven? It is where God reigns. And what does “reigns” mean? It means that His will is done.

God’s will is done by the Holy Angels immediately, willingly, and completely. They do not respond as our children do, or as we sometimes respond when someone gives us an instruction or a task: “All right, in a little while.” Do you understand? It must be done immediately. The angels do not say, “All right, but I have something else to do now.” God’s will is done immediately and willingly—not as we grumble when we are called to do the will of God or of other people. And “completely” means that it is not done imperfectly. After all, does not Holy Scripture say through the prophet...

“Cursed is he who performs the works of the Lord negligently”? Negligently. You may tell me that the example I am about to give is extremely small, but it is revealing, and that is enough. Someone goes to venerate at the Holy Altar of a church and sees that the cloth placed over the Gospel has been tossed down carelessly, crooked and untidy. Would a good housewife do that in her own sitting room? Would she not spread a tablecloth with the utmost care? Of course she would. And this shows that the priest...

Is in a hurry, or was hurried and inattentive; he simply threw down the cloth however it happened to fall. No—it should be centered and properly arranged. I have given you this very small example to show that God’s will and God’s work must always be done perfectly—perfectly according to human ability, of course. In this, the human person is called to imitate the Holy Angels, for this is what they do: they carry out God’s will immediately, willingly, and completely. Moreover, when we say “in the heavens,” this reminds us of a commandment of the Holy Spirit written by the hand of the Apostle Paul.

What does he say to the Colossians, in chapter 3, verse 1? He says, “Seek the things above, where Christ is. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things of the earth.” Where is Christ? Above. Seek the things above. Where is Christ not found—meaning His will and all that follows from it? Below, on earth. Do not set your mind on the things of the earth. That is the point. Therefore, “Set your mind on the things above,” where Christ is—“where Christ is.” Forgive me: first, “Seek the things above”; second, “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things of the earth.”

That means everything earthly and material. This certainly does not mean that we are to have nothing to do with material things. We may use them, but we must not fasten our attention and our whole way of thinking upon them, because then our outlook will become materialistic. Here, then, is one meaning of heaven. Furthermore, if you will, heaven reminds us of our first homeland. Please pay close attention to this point. It reminds us of our first homeland, now so distant—but certainly not according to the Platonic understanding.

I mean the ancient Paradise that was here upon our earth. Yet in that ancient Paradise, God walked; there He met Adam. “Adam, where are you?” Wherever God is, there also is heaven. Therefore, the earth itself was heaven. God walked in Paradise and had communion with Adam. But as I said a moment ago, this must certainly not be understood in the Platonic sense. Allow me to say a little more about this, since we are returning once again to our ancient pagan religion. Whether we like it or not, it is upon this...

This is what those who seek to bring back the twelve gods of Olympus, the ancient cults, and many other things are counting on. I am sorry to say it, but unfortunately this is what is happening. Now Plato was a remarkable philosopher, but he lived before Christ and was a pagan. Naturally, we would not expect to compare him with Christianity. Even so, he was an inspired and extraordinary thinker, capable, as early as the fifth century before Christ, of saying the things he said. But his theories? They were certainly full of errors—so full of errors...

The Church was eventually compelled, in the case of Origen, to condemn Platonism and Neoplatonism. It was compelled to do so. Christianity has nothing to do with Platonism, nor does Christianity have anything to do with a system of ideas. I told you on a previous occasion that Christianity is not an ideology; it is founded upon events. Plato is the philosopher of ideas. The term may sometimes be used loosely, of course, since we cannot always speak with complete precision. But to identify the two is a glaring error. Take care, then. Plato teaches...

That knowledge is recollection and that, consequently, when we came to earth, we forgot. According to him, we had existed in heaven as souls—which introduces yet another teaching, the preexistence of souls. As I told you, when judged from a Christian standpoint, these are errors upon errors. According to this view, then, we were in heaven, sinned there—as the Neoplatonists also taught—and found ourselves on earth, confined within a prison called the human body. There in heaven, we possessed knowledge of truth, beauty, and God. But when we came here to earth...

We forgot these things because we found ourselves in a different environment. Now, however, since we once possessed this experience, this experience of knowledge, we must be educated. For Plato, education is nothing other than recollection. The whole purpose of education, therefore, is to remember what we once possessed in heaven. But you understand that when I tell you now that heaven reminds us of our ancient homeland, I am not speaking of such Platonic recollection. We may think of the Dormition of the Theotokos, the Annunciation, and the longing for Paradise. John Milton, the poet, wrote Paradise Lost, a vast poem comparable in length to the Odyssey, as well as Paradise Regained. Thus, we remember. But how do we remember? Not in a Platonic way, I repeat. From the ancient Paradise, we remember our ancient homeland. And how do we remember that ancient homeland? Through the image of God that we bear within us, through the nobility of our creation; for when God made us in His own image, He endowed our very nature with nobility.

He even calls us His children. God does not call hens and goats His children; He calls us His children. Therefore, we bear the image of God within us, and this is, so to speak, our remembrance of our ancient homeland, of our former Paradise, and of God. But let us look at this more closely. Christ’s teaching is unfathomable. Every time we take up a passage, we always discover something new—always, without exception. When we find nothing new, it is because we are not digging deeply enough, or because we are unable to dig.

For example, how many homilies could one give on the parable of the prodigal son? One, two, three, five, ten? My beloved, you can always find something new in this parable—always something new. Perhaps I shall now tell you something you have not heard before. The prodigal son returns and plans to say to his father, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.” Do you remember the parable? “Against heaven and before you.” Why does he say, “against heaven and before you”? It means that he sinned before two: before God...

Thus, he sinned against heaven, against his ancient homeland. Now he is returning. Where is he returning? To his ancient homeland, to heaven, to that good homeland of his, to his Father’s house. You see, then, my beloved, what riches are contained in this whole Word of God. Thus, he sinned against heaven, against his ancient homeland. Now he is returning. Where is he returning? To his ancient homeland, to heaven, to that good homeland of his, to his Father’s house. You see, then, my beloved, what riches are contained in this whole Word of God.

Let us stop here, so that we may go a little further.

Let us move on to the twelfth paragraph, where Saint Cyril now comes to the main subject: “Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come,” and so forth. I told you that the Lord’s Prayer has six petitions—six. On one level, the first three petitions concern God. They also concern us, as you will see. The last three petitions concern us exclusively. And so, in all six of these petitions—though this may sound like an exaggeration—the Fathers demonstrate that...

the whole Gospel is hidden within them. Astonishing! Its doctrinal teaching, its moral teaching, and its spiritual teaching are all there. This has been said both of the parable of the prodigal son, which I mentioned earlier, and of the Lord’s Prayer. If only these had been given to us, we would still possess a very brief summary of the whole Gospel. But let us look at the first three petitions. The first three are: “Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done.” These three, these three...

belong to what is due to God. What does it mean to say that they “belong to what is due to God”? It means many things. Do you remember a question you raised one Monday concerning the Great Doxology: “Blessed art Thou, O Lord; teach me Thy statutes”? More precisely, it is in the Small Doxology. The Small Doxology is actually longer than the Great—but why that is so is another matter. “Blessed art Thou, O Lord”—Thou art blessed, O Lord—“teach me Thy statutes.” What does “statutes” mean here? It means those things which You are entitled to receive from me; those things which I am obliged to...

render to You because they are Your due. “Blessed art Thou, O Master; grant me understanding of Thy statutes.” Notice that it says, “O Lord, O Master, O Holy One.” There are three phrases: “O Lord, O Master, O Holy One.” We shall not make a separate analysis of them. We already did so during the question period one Monday, as I told you. But here it says: how will the Lord teach these things to me? I must understand what is due to God. Yet how can I understand it if I lack discernment? And so I now ask the Lord to grant me understanding.

so that I may see—or, better, understand—what these things due to God are. “Blessed art Thou, O Holy One,” says the third phrase, “enlighten me by Thy statutes.” Enlighten me, so that in Thy light I may see Thy light and perceive those things which belong to Thee. The Doxology contains this phrase: “In the light”—notice this—“in the light of Thy countenance shall we see light.” This wording also comes from the Psalms: “In the light of Thy countenance shall we see light.”

Thank you. In other words, by the light of Thy countenance we shall see light. The wording is striking. It means nothing other than that we see by the light of the Holy Spirit or by the light of the Son. For what do we say? The Father is Light, the Son is Light, and the Holy Spirit is Light. Yet I cannot see the light of the Father unless I see it within the light of the Son and the light of the Holy Spirit. Thus, “In the light of Thy countenance shall we see light.” This contains a great deal of theology—an immense amount. We shall say nothing more, except that we need God’s illumination.

in order to see what is due to God. Through the words “teach me,” “grant me understanding,” and “enlighten me,” we ask to possess the fullness of knowledge, understanding, and illumination concerning what is due to God. And what is due to God? In summary, it is expressed in these three petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, the “Our Father.” You know what riches these three petitions contain. I have told you before, and I tell you again: Holy Scripture is never exhausted. We shall say only a little, simply to gain an image, a taste, a faint sense of this treasure.

So, let us consider the first petition: “Hallowed be Thy name.” That is, may Your name be hallowed. May Thy name be hallowed. Is not the name of God already holy? Why, then, do we ask that it be hallowed? What we are saying is a prayer: we pray to God that His name may be hallowed. Can we add anything to God’s holiness? My beloved, if God is the source of holiness, how can we ask that the name of God be hallowed? He is the source of holiness, and it is from Him that we ourselves receive holiness. How, then, can we pray that God’s name may be hallowed?

You understand the question. Let us examine it through the teaching of the Fathers of the Church and see exactly what they say. First, let us hear Saint Cyril: “Hallowed be Thy name. The name of God is holy by nature, whether we say so or whether we do not.” Thus, Saint Cyril says that whether we ask God for His name to be hallowed or do not ask it, the name of God is holy. “The name of God is holy by nature.” Therefore, by nature—that is, with reference to His very nature...

God is holy by nature. He did not acquire sanctification or holiness at some point—if such an expression may be permitted—at some moment in His life, as though God had once not been holy and then became holy. Never. God is holy by nature. God lives eternally, without beginning and without end. In God are both the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. The beginning has its source in God, and the end also comes to its completion and abides in God. God is beyond the bounds of Alpha and Omega. He is holy. He is the eternal God. God, therefore, is eternally what He is.

Why, then, do we say, “Hallowed be Thy name”? Because, Saint Cyril says, “Among sinners it is sometimes profaned, according to the saying, ‘Because of you My name is continually blasphemed among the nations.’ We pray that the name of God may be hallowed in us—not that it passes from being unholy to becoming holy, but that it becomes holy in us, as we ourselves are sanctified and do things worthy of sanctification.” God, then, is holy. He is the source of holiness, and the Mysteries that come from God are...

a source of holiness. The Holy Angels also praise God. Indeed, the Seraphim cry out continually, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” as the Prophet Isaiah reveals and records for us in the sixth chapter. God, then, is holy. He has also told us, “Become holy, for I am holy.” Become holy because I am holy. Therefore, since I am holy, you too must become what I am. What, then, does “holy” mean here?

The Fathers say that “hallowed” is equivalent to “glorified.” “May the name be glorified”—that is what “hallowed” means. All the Fathers say this. But how is it to be glorified, and where? Is God not already glorified? He is to be glorified within our own lives. We can now understand what the Lord Himself says in the Gospel according to Matthew, in the Sermon on the Mount: “Let your light so shine before men.” Let your own light shine in this way, He says...

“that they may see your good works”—and notice what follows—“and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” There it is: “glorify.” Thus, “hallowed” means “glorified.” People will glorify God when they see our good works and our good way of life. This is very important and worthy of attention. When He says, “Let your light so shine,” it means that we too become light. Yes, we too become lights. The Lord told us that a city set upon a mountain cannot be hidden. Tell me, can Rapsani be hidden? Rapsani cannot be hidden. Can Aigani be hidden? It cannot. Can Pyrgetos be hidden? It cannot, because these are cities set upon a mountain; they stand on the mountainside and can be seen. The Lord tells us that each believer is like a city set upon a mountain. We are also light. Light, then. He says that a light is placed upon a lampstand, and so it shines. A lampstand holds what we call a lamp—or, more precisely, an oil lamp.

It shines and gives light to everyone in the house. He says that we do not place this lamp—that is, the lampstand together with its light—under a bushel basket. A bushel is a wooden container used for measuring grain. Since it is made of wood and is not transparent, if you place the light beneath it and cover it with that box, the light can no longer shine. Christ wants our light to shine. You may ask whether this contradicts the teaching that we should conceal our virtue. My beloved, virtue cannot be hidden. Virtue cannot be hidden.

Of course, we will not announce our almsgiving. But what do you think? Do you believe virtue can be hidden? Virtue is set upon a mountain, just as wickedness also cannot be hidden. It begins to show in a person’s face, in his conduct, and in his whole bearing. Thus, it is the virtue and holiness of the faithful that will ultimately glorify the name of God among those who do not yet know Him. Sometimes people may say to me:

“I was shopping in a store, and the clerk gave me too much change,” or, “Among the things I bought, somehow there was an extra item. I do not know how it happened, but something from the shop ended up among my other things, and I did not pay for it.” Then you ask me what you should do with the merchandise or the extra change. How can I not answer? But the question continues: “Should we give it to some poor person? I want to put the money in the Church’s offering box.” Neither one nor the other. You must take it back to the store.

You will say, “Excuse me, you made a mistake and gave me too much change.” Or, “Among the things I bought, I found this item, which I did not pay for and did not take.” No—it simply ended up there. Once, many years ago, I went into a bookstore; I will never forget it. I went to buy a small case for my vestments. I was a newly ordained priest, very newly ordained, and I wanted a little case in which to keep my vestments. You see how the sleeves of our cassocks are. At one point, I raised my hand—I do not remember why. On the counter there were some small boxes and many pencils, and the pencils had those clips that fasten onto a pocket. One of them caught on the edge of my cassock sleeve. Remember, I was there with my new vestments.

I had bought them and had gone to buy a small case to put them in. As I moved my hand like this, the edge of my sleeve caught a pencil. When I lowered my hand, the pencil fell. Where? Into the bag containing my vestments. When I took the vestments out to see how they fit in the little case, I said, “How did this pencil get into my bag?” The shopkeeper said to me, “That belongs to us.” My ears turned red. I thought, “Oh no! He must think I am a thief—a thief!” It was dreadful, absolutely dreadful: a thief! So, my dear ones, be careful. Many such things happen in shops—many indeed. And, of course, in street markets...

and bazaars, God alone knows how much stealing takes place; God alone knows. In any case, be careful. Do not give it to a poor person, and do not put it in the Church collection box. Take it back and say, “Excuse me, you gave me too much money.” Then listen to what that person will say: “Glory to God, there are still Christians in the world.” Who was glorified? God was—through the way I conducted myself. Yes, I still keep old clippings like this; I do not know why I collect them.

I have one small newspaper clipping. A boy who was the brother of a priest friend of mine—and who has now become a priest himself—once found a wallet, a thick wallet full of money. This was many years ago. The newspaper reported that he had found it. Of course, such things are always printed in the small notices. The headline read, “There Are Still Good People.” It said, “A young man named so-and-so found a wallet and handed it over to the police.” When I saw this in the newspaper, I was delighted. I said, “Well done!” I glorified God, because he was one of our own children and a friend of mine. Without mentioning his name, I can tell you that he is now a priest in Athens. That is how it is.

It is very important—truly very important, my dear ones—that when we find something in the street, a wallet or an identity card, what should we do? We should go and hand it in. We live in an age when people smash car windows and steal whatever they find inside; they snatch things, steal entire cars, grab handbags, and who knows what else. In such an age, by acting honestly we truly cause the holy name of God to be glorified. That, then, is what “hallowed” means: “glorified.” Let people see your good works; let them see our patient endurance, our honesty, our sincerity—whatever good they may see.

Do not borrow money from me and then later say, “I have never seen you; I do not know you.”

Say instead, “I am sorry, I cannot repay you now. But I will give it back; I will repay you.” Do not deny the debt and say, “When did you ever lend me money?” Perhaps I have not expressed that very well, but you understand. This is honesty, my dear ones: our integrity, our purity, and, as I said, our sincerity.

When we are not upright people, we become dishonest and muddle everything.

When all these things are clean and good, God is glorified. So where is God glorified—where is His name hallowed? Where? In our lives. But take care, because the opposite is also true. It is significant that Saint Cyril...

I read this to you, but I did not explain it immediately. Saint Cyril also speaks of the opposite. When Christians do not live rightly, God is not glorified. And not only is He not glorified, but His holy name is blasphemed. What does Saint Cyril say? “Among sinners it is sometimes profaned, according to the saying, ‘Because of you My name is continually blasphemed among the Gentiles,’” as the Prophet Isaiah says in chapter 52. “We pray that the name of God may be hallowed in us.” Indeed, God complained about the Jews.

Was this not also carried over into the New Testament? The Apostle Paul uses it as well: “Because of you My name is blasphemed among the Gentiles.” Because of you, I am not glorified; and not only am I not glorified, but I am blasphemed. For when those who are not Christians see Christians behaving disgracefully and living unworthy lives, they will say, “Is this Christianity? Away with it!” Let me give you some examples from history. First, God said this at that time about the Jews in relation to the idolaters. The Apostle Paul says it...

in relation to the Gentiles—again, the idolaters—and afterward, of course, it applies to Christians. I will mention two or three accounts. I do not know whether you are aware that Turkey once considered accepting the Gospel. But the Christians did not set a good example, and the Turks embraced Islam instead. Let us consider another example. During the catastrophe of 1922, the Greeks were being loaded onto ships at Smyrna and elsewhere and brought as refugees to Piraeus. Among them was also a Turkish man.

He knew Greek, of course, loved the Greeks, and intended to become a Christian. But as soon as he disembarked at the port of Piraeus, he heard a local man blaspheming the things of God. The ships were coming and going, bringing people ashore. The Turkish man boarded the ship again and returned to Turkey, remaining a Muslim. This is what it means for the holy name of God to be blasphemed because of us. Shall I speak of India? You know, the missions were unable to take root there; they simply could not.

Neither in Africa nor in Asia did they achieve more than small and very meager results. Why? Other teachings, meanwhile, do take root. I have said this again and again. Gandhi used to say, “The Gospel is good, but the Christians are not good at all.” When people learned how the British had behaved as conquerors in India, the Indians came to despise the British and would never wish to become Christians. The same thing happened in Africa. What can we say? Traders went there and seized those poor black people...

They made them slaves and transported them in the holds of ships, where they had to attend to every bodily need. Some reached their destination, but not all; many died inside those holds, which were nailed shut. Those who survived were taken to the markets of America and sold in slave markets. What do you think? Could these people easily agree to become Christians? When Europeans established colonies as colonial rulers in Africa and elsewhere, do you think the people there could accept our Christianity? I would say that the missionaries of Europe labor in vain. We Greeks went there too. The truth is that the Greeks...

never exploited the people wherever they went. That is true; they did not exploit them—not in Abyssinia in the age of Alexander the Great, nor anywhere else down to the present day. We never demanded anything in return for teaching them Christianity. Nevertheless, our contribution has been meager, while Islam, by contrast, has spread throughout the world. You heard what I told you: Islam numbers one billion two hundred million people—that is, Muslims, divided, of course, among various countries. Sixty percent of the Russian population alone is Muslim.

When we speak of one billion two hundred million Muslims, how many Christians are there, counting, of course, all confessions? We barely reach one billion, and perhaps not even that. Is this not shameful? Is it not tragic? God is not glorified, because we are self-seeking, we are colonialists, we do not live Christianity, and we have become debased and useless. The Word of God is therefore justified in saying, already in the Old Testament, “Because of us My name is blasphemed among the Gentiles.” So what is Saint Cyril telling us here? “It is not that the name passes from being unholy to becoming holy”—as though God were not holy and we had now made Him holy—“but rather that it becomes holy in us, when we ourselves are sanctified and do things worthy of sanctification.” Do you see? It happens in us. We are responsible for whether the holy name of God is blasphemed or glorified. How can we glorify God? I told you earlier: through virtue and through His command that we must become holy because He is holy. Do not be surprised. When the image of God...

Every human being—each and every person—is made in the image of God, whether we are educated or uneducated, white, black, or yellow, slaves or masters, rich or poor. The wording in Genesis is striking: “Let Us make man in Our image and according to Our likeness”—according to Our own image and Our own likeness. And then it says, “And God made man.” First there is, so to speak, the counsel of the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. I say “so to speak,” because God does not deliberate; these are human ways of speaking and thinking. “And God made man.” Now listen: “In the image of God He made him.” The likeness is not mentioned there. Why? Because the image is our endowment. Whether we want it or not, we possess it: rationality, freedom, and the capacity for everything else. What does “everything else” mean?

It means the capacity to attain the likeness. But...

attaining the likeness now depends upon us. God gave us the capacity, which is the image; the likeness is our responsibility. This is precisely why the Lord said in His Sermon on the Mount, “You, therefore, shall be perfect, as your Father in heaven is perfect.” What does it mean to become perfect? It means to pass from the image to the likeness. How can I know what the quality of that likeness is? By looking to God. What are the attributes of His holiness? God is perfect. Therefore, strive to become what God is: perfect—always, of course, within the measure of our human nature.

We cannot become perfect in the way that God is perfect, but we do, at any rate, have our model before us. And so, my dear friends, we must move from the image, which we possess in potential, to the likeness. When we Christians attain the likeness, then God’s name is hallowed—that is, God is glorified. This must be our concern. Why do we have Great Lent? So that we may be sanctified. Why do we have the Divine Liturgy? So that we may be sanctified. Why do we come to hear the Word of God? So that we may be sanctified. Tell me, please: now that you are listening to the Word of God, if it truly holds your attention, does your nous run after sins of the flesh, other sins, or deceitful things? No, it does not run after them—certainly not. For the nous is sanctified, and the heart is sanctified. When we study Holy Scripture, we are sanctified. As Saint John Chrysostom says: ‘You do not understand when you study the Word of God? Even so,’ he says, ‘simply because you are holding the book in your hands, you are sanctified’—that is, you are cleansed. How much more, then, if you understand it! So, my dear friends, let us begin to be sanctified. It is a commandment. People mockingly say, ‘Well, look at the saint! Do you think you are going to become a saint?’ Yes, indeed.

I will become a saint, because it is a commandment. We must therefore keep this commandment, this fundamental commandment: ‘Become holy, for I am holy.’ We cannot speak mockingly and say, ‘Oh, he goes to Church, he does this or that, he goes to Holy Confession. He is pretending to be devout. He wants to become a saint.’ Yes, indeed, I want to become a saint. That is what we must do. This is why we fast, why we study, and why we do not run after sin. For sanctification has a negative aspect—to cleanse myself—and a positive aspect—to acquire the attributes of God. And so, my dear friends, let us strive to give God what is rightly His: the glory that is His due.

And as we glorify God, we ourselves are sanctified. Somewhere in the Fourth Book of Kingdoms, I believe, it says: ‘Those who glorify Me, I will glorify; those who hallow Me, I will sanctify.’ What more could we desire, when this grace of God comes upon us? You see? When we strive in this way to hallow the name of God, may He also sanctify us and glorify us. God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Έτσι... Ας δούμε το πρώτο αίτημα: «Ἁγιασθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σου». Δηλαδή, να αγιαστεί το δικό Σου το όνομα. Να αγιαστεί το όνομά Σου. Το όνομα του Θεού δεν είναι Άγιον; Και ζητούμε τώρα να αγιαστεί; Δηλαδή, αυτό που λέμε είναι ευχή. Ευχόμεθα, ευχόμεθα εις τον Θεό να αγιαστεί το όνομά Του. Έχουμε εμείς τίποτε να προσθέσουμε εις τον αγιασμό του Θεού; Εάν, αγαπητοί μου, ο Θεός είναι η πηγή του αγιασμού, πώς τώρα εμείς ζητούμε και λέμε να αγιαστεί το όνομα του Θεού, αφού είναι η πηγή του αγιασμού και, ως πηγή που είναι ο Θεός, εμείς θα πάρουμε από εκεί; Πώς τώρα εμείς ευχόμεθα να αγιαστεί το όνομα του Θεού;

πηγή αγιασμού. Ακόμη, οι Άγιοι Άγγελοι υμνούν τον Θεό. Μάλιστα, τα Σεραφείμ λέγουν εις το διηνεκές: «Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος, Ἅγιος», όπως μας το φανερώνει, μας το καταγράφει ο προφήτης Ησαΐας εις το έκτο κεφάλαιο. Ο Θεός, λοιπόν, είναι Άγιος. Ακόμη μας είπε: «Ἅγιοι γίνεσθε, ὅτι ἐγὼ ἅγιος εἰμί». Να γίνεστε Άγιοι, γιατί εγώ είμαι Άγιος. Συνεπώς, θα πρέπει και εσείς να γίνεστε, αφού είμαι, να γίνεστε εκείνο που εγώ είμαι. Τι σημαίνει, λοιπόν, Άγιος εδώ;

της Θεοτόκου, Δευτέρα Παρουσία, Ευαγγελισμός, Ανάσταση, Αποκάλυψη, Αντίχριστος, Βέχομαι όλοι οι άνθρωποι, πας άνθρωπος, οποιοσδήποτε άνθρωπο, όλοι οι άνθρωποι, είτε μόρφος έχουμε, είτε είμαστε άσπροι, είτε είμαστε μαύροι ή κίτρινοι, είτε είμαστε δούλοι, είτε είμαστε κύριοι, χρούσιοι ή φτωχοί, όλοι είμαστε εικόνα του Θεού. Μας κάνει μια εντύπωση, η διατύπωση στη γέννηση που λέει «Ποιήσωμεν ἄνθρωπον κατ’ εἰκόνα ἡμετέραν καὶ καθ’ ὁμοίωσιν», σύμφωνα με τη δική μας εικόνα και με τη δική μας ομοίωση. Και παρακάτω: «Καὶ ἐποίησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον». Πρώτα είναι η σύσκεψη, ούτως ειπείν, των τριών προσώπων της Αγίας Τριάδος· ούτως ειπείν, ο Θεός δεν συσκέπτεται, είναι ανθρώπινα λογικά κατηγορήματα αυτά. «Καὶ ἐποίησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον». Ακούστε: «Κατ’ εἰκόνα Θεοῦ ἐποίησεν αὐτόν». Δεν είναι η καθ’ ομοίωσιν αυτή. Γιατί το κατ’ εικόνα είναι προίκα μας. Θέλουμε, δεν θέλουμε, το έχουμε. Η λογικότητα, η ελευθερία και η δυνατότητα για κάθε τι άλλο. Ποιο κάθε τι άλλο;
