Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the Divine Eucharist is the spiritual, bloodless, and propitiatory sacrifice upon which the Church offers every petition to God. Liturgical prayer embraces rulers, armed forces, allies, the sick, the oppressed, and everyone needing help, regardless of whether political authorities are Christian. Commemoration occurs both at the Proskomide and after the consecration of the Gifts, with the latter receiving particular emphasis despite practical difficulties caused by long lists of names.

We are in the book of the Catecheses of Saint Cyril, in the Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis, paragraph eight. Those of you who have the Apostoliki Diakonia edition will find the text on page 259. We said something about this passage, this paragraph, last time, but we did not finish. Saint Cyril is speaking to those who have now been illumined—that is, those who have now been baptized—and he selectively explains certain elements of the Divine Liturgy. Here he says, “Then, after the spiritual sacrifice has been completed”—after the completion of the noetic, rational, spiritual sacrifice, that is, the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the bloodless worship—“over that propitiatory sacrifice, we entreat God for the common peace of the Churches,” and so forth. We have seen at some length that every petition of the Church is made over a sacrifice. Indeed, Saint Cyril’s wording is very precise: “over that propitiatory sacrifice.” We never bring petitions before God unless we have a sacrifice.
As I was telling you last time, the candle you light is also a sacrifice, as are the incense and the vigil lamp. They are sacrifices. And even if you have none of these, the fruit of the lips is a sacrifice. The Psalter says this clearly, and the Apostle Paul repeats it: “A sacrifice of praise, that is,” says the Apostle Paul, “the fruit of lips.” To offer a hymn, to chant something, is a sacrifice. And if you cannot even chant—perhaps you do not want others to hear you, or you do not know how to chant—your tears are also a sacrifice. Prostrations, too, are a sacrifice.
So no one can say, “I am poor and have no means of offering a sacrifice.” All these are forms and elements of sacrifice, and I think they are within everyone’s reach. Perhaps you cannot kneel or make a prostration because of your back, for some other reason, or because you have grown old. Yes, perhaps you are stiff. Then weep a little. Let your eyes shed a few tears, so that over this sacrifice—which has its power through that sacrifice of Christ, through His Body and His Blood—you may offer to God the petitions you wish to make. This is what we were saying last time.
Let us now see what kinds of petitions we may offer over the sacrifice of Christ. Here he says, “We entreat God for the common peace of the Churches”; that is, that the Churches may have peace among themselves.
I will say something about this, although we already discussed it at some length during the questions. Do we, the Churches, have peace among ourselves? You see that this is a petition: we ask and beseech God to give us this peace among the Churches, so that there may be no disputes, friction, or clashes.
You know that, at one time, by the decision of an Ecumenical Council, Constantinople came to be regarded as the mother see of the Churches—unfortunately, not Jerusalem, but Constantinople. Many reasons—geographical, political circumstances of that age, theological reasons, and others—ultimately established the Patriarchate of Constantinople. This was established by a decision of an Ecumenical Council. Later, divisions began to arise: the so-called Bulgarian schism, and the schisms involving Russia and Greece. Of course, when we say “schisms” here, we mean the declaration, “We do not wish to be under the Patriarchate of Constantinople.”
“We want a Patriarch of our own.” Thus Bulgaria has its own Patriarch, Moscow has its own Patriarch, Serbia has its own Patriarch, Greece has an Archbishop, and Cyprus has an Archbishop. But it should not have been this way. And you know that in the middle of the last century, the Church of Greece carried out this rebellion against the Patriarchate of Constantinople. And what does the Church of Constantinople do? Are we now going to create schisms? At some point we tear ourselves away from the mother of the Churches, and then the Church of Constantinople recognizes it, and every Church...
creates its own Patriarchate. At this very moment—I say, at this very moment—the question of the Church of Albania remains open. But I will say no more. The same applies to the so-called Church of the Slavic Macedonians. These are things with no true foundation—none at all. And you know that last year or the year before, Rome hastened to bow before those people of Skopje. It rushed to do so, because Rome has always had its own reasons. And that is why... But what am I saying? I am beginning to go into matters of history. You can read about them in Church history. I wish to make only one point: under such conditions, can the Churches have peace and love? It is impossible. Therefore, we must pray for peace; that is, we must entreat God that there may be peace among the Churches. Then he says, “For the stability of the world.” Let us pray for the stability of the world. What does “the world” mean here? He is not speaking about the Church; a distinction is being made. The Church is one thing, and the world is another. The world is that which lies outside the Church, existing as a reality but having no relationship with the Church. Let us not forget that the world, in the moral and spiritual sense...
“lies entirely in the evil one.” The whole world lies in the embrace of the devil. This is not my expression; John the Evangelist says it. The entire world lies in the embrace of the devil: “It lies in the evil one.” Can this world, then, create problems for the Church? Undoubtedly, yes. What kind of problems? Those that arise when it lacks stability: armed conflicts and all the disorders that can occur and that we read about in what is called history. These are the conditions in which peoples and nations are never at peace.
They are like a boiling cauldron. One nation has ambitions of conquest, while another becomes the victim of the first nation’s greed. Under such conditions, can we have peace and stability? The Church is scattered throughout the whole earth, and believers live everywhere. Amid armed conflict, can conditions ever be favorable enough for us to worship God properly? By “properly,” I mean freely. When we know that bombs are falling overhead, how can we go to the Divine Liturgy? I remember a scene from the Occupation in Athens, when, because of the war, the celebration of Pascha at midnight was forbidden.
Midnight services were forbidden because of the war. The lights were also prohibited; there was a blackout, and people were forbidden to go to Church because no one was allowed on the streets after seven, or eight, or six in the evening, depending on the circumstances. And when were we allowed to go out again? After six or seven in the morning, something like that. So how could we go? The Resurrection service was not held at midnight. It was celebrated in the Churches on Sunday morning, at the usual time for the Divine Liturgies. I remember that everyone in my family had left for Church on Sunday morning for Pascha.
We had some animals, and I had stayed behind to tend to them. I was the last to leave, and I went to open the door of the house so that I, too, could go. What can I tell you? Suddenly there was a tremendous crash—the bombing of Tatoi. We lived in Kifisia, quite near Tatoi. It was an extraordinary thing: bombs and antiaircraft fire. I was opening the door of the house at that very moment. I shut it again. How could I go outside? Bear in mind that the antiaircraft shells were falling like rain. At night they could be seen glowing red-hot. A shell would burst, and its fragments would fly...
and scatter everywhere—and death would take whoever happened to be struck. How could anyone go outside? Tell me.
Could such conditions among nations and peoples at war fail to affect believers adversely, preventing them from worshiping God in outward peace? So what are we asking for here? We are asking for stability. What does stability mean? It means that the world outside the Church should be preserved in good order and function properly. This is why Saint Basil the Great says in his Divine Liturgy, “Pacify those nations that desire wars.” Those that want war—pacify them, calm them, soften them, so that they will not seek wars. You see? We entreat God even for this: “For the stability of the world.” Let us continue: “For kings.” I should tell you that Saint Cyril mentions only four or five matters here and does not discuss them at length, because there would be no reason to expand further. But in the litanies of peace and the litanies of supplication within the Divine Liturgy, we have many petitions. There are also petitions for special occasions, such as Pentecost, the Great Blessing of Water, the lesser blessing of water celebrated either at home or in the Church...
Holy Matrimony, which also has its litanies of peace, and Baptism, which has them as well. On these special occasions, we ask God for particular things. You may ask, what do we request in Holy Matrimony? We ask that the couple may live for many years, have children, and receive what is called the blessing of good children.
What “the blessing of good children” means is a very great subject, so let us not take it up now, and so forth. You see? We have particular petitions—particular petitions. There are therefore many petitions. Here Saint Cyril mentions four, five, or six. He says, “For kings, for armies and allies,” and so forth. “For kings.” Take note of this.
Holy Scripture, and repeatedly the New Testament, speaks about this matter. Both the Apostle Peter and the Apostle Paul speak about it. The Apostle Peter, for example, says that you should pray for those in authority. Who are those in authority? Those who govern. It makes no difference whether they are Christians or not. We have already seen this in connection with the stability of the world. All the more so, of course, if those who administer and govern are Christians. He also says, “Love the brotherhood,” says the Apostle Peter, “honor the king,” and so forth. The king is simply the one who governs. Yet today, when some people hear...
the word “king,” they have an allergic reaction. I do not know why. It is strange. And since the occasion has arisen, permit me to say this—listen to me: I belong to none of those factions. I am neither a royalist, nor an anti-Venizelist, nor a supporter of Tsaldaris, to speak in terms of the political divisions that existed before 1940. Do not imagine that I am. But when a king may also be a Freemason, that is an utter disaster—an utter disaster.
For those who govern to be Freemasons is an utter disaster. “King” is simply the title. That troparion we chant at the blessing of water—“Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance,” and then, “granting victories to the kings over the barbarians”—was the national anthem of Byzantium. It was brought into the Church. And some people... Thank you very much.
To avoid the word “kings,” instead of saying “to the kings,” they say “to the pious.” But then the text becomes very strange, because it says, “granting victories over the barbarians.” Does that not become unintelligible? My dear friends, the word “king” means the one who governs. The Church cannot change her words and titles whenever systems of government change. The title, the word, the term “king” refers to the one who governs. That is all. We are not permitted to change it. And so, please, as we did this year at the blessing of water and at the monastery, here we chanted, “granting victories to the kings.” That is all—it means our rulers.
And whoever they may be, I repeat, whatever the form of government, is there not someone who governs under every political system? Let that person, then, have every ability to keep a firm hand on the helm of the people he governs. That is all. The Apostle Paul says this, and the Apostle Peter says it as well. I repeat: they speak of kings, meaning those who govern. And consider this: when the Apostle Paul wrote these things, do you know who the emperor of Rome was? It was Nero. That is very significant. Could we, then, have prayed for Nero? Yes. Nero was the one who condemned the Apostle Paul to death. Yes—but if only he had become a Christian!
He did not become one. But at least he might not have taken Christians, tied them to stakes in the royal—or rather, imperial—gardens of Rome, smeared them with pitch in the evening, and set them on fire to illuminate the imperial gardens. Yes. And if the stones of the Colosseum had a voice, what cries would they utter, and what would they tell us? The catacombs bear witness, and so on and so forth. If only there had at least been some mercy. And then there is that gracious thing the Apostle Paul says while making his defense. Before whom was he defending himself? Before Festus—or, more precisely, before King Herod Agrippa, with Festus, the Roman governor, also present.
Festus presents Paul to King Agrippa so that, as he says, he may find something to write to the emperor when sending Paul on, since Paul had appealed to Caesar. He needed something to write to Augustus, that is, the emperor. And the Apostle Paul makes his defense before King Agrippa. He says to him, “King Agrippa, I count it an honor to make my defense before you.” An honor, Paul says! Never mind what a wretched man King Agrippa was, and how we saw that he died; let us not go into that. At one point Agrippa entered that hall with his wife Bernice “with great pomp”—with a great entourage, military commanders, elaborate clothing, and all the rest. That is what “with great pomp” means. Poor Paul stood there with chains on his hands. Then Herod says, “In a short time you persuade me to become a Christian.” Some interpret this as Herod speaking ironically. Paul did not take it ironically. However Herod may have meant it, Paul took it seriously, because he answered seriously. And what did he say? “I would wish with all my heart that you might become a Christian, as I am a Christian, except for these chains”—apart from these bonds, these chains that I wear. In other words, may you remain free, without chains, and be a Christian.
Did Herod Agrippa become a Christian? That was his own affair. Sadly, he did not—but how was that the Apostle Paul’s fault? At the very least, such a man might cease to be hostile toward Christians. Do you understand? This is very important. Even if the ruler—the emperor, the king, the president of a republic, or whatever else he may be—is not a Christian, let him at least revere and respect the Church. “For the armies and their allies.” I ask you: who is in the military camps? Are they not our own children? You who are listening to me here at this very moment—do some of you not have children serving as soldiers? Of course you do. I ask you.
Is not an army supposed to stand ready at any moment to defend the just rights of the homeland? Consequently, your children might suddenly find themselves in a state of war. Should we not, then, pray for our armies, which are made up of our own people, our own children, our own Christians? Undoubtedly we should. And we should pray for our allies as well—those who come and stand ready to defend us in an armed conflict. “For those who are sick.” How beautiful this is! Let us pray for those confined to bed, who cannot rise and come to the Divine Liturgy. Take note that in the ancient Church
the sick were not left without Holy Communion. After the Divine Liturgy ended, the priest would take the Holy Chalice without consuming what remained, and he would go to the homes and give Holy Communion to the sick. I said the priest, but in a case of necessity a deacon would do this—if the priest was absent or unavailable. He would go and give Holy Communion to the sick. I remember once serving the Divine Liturgy in Vyronas, and they told me that someone wished to receive Holy Communion. I took the Holy Chalice and went out into the street. Pay attention: the Holy Chalice. I did not take the holy artophorion, which we can conceal so that it is not seen, perhaps with only the epitrachelion visible. No, I took the Holy Chalice.
I went to that house, gave the man Holy Communion, and returned. This happened to me on one other occasion—twice altogether. I have given Holy Communion to the sick many times, but only twice with the Holy Chalice. The other time was here, at Saint Anthony’s. There was a house beyond the hospital, somewhere near the 404, and after the Divine Liturgy I went and gave that man Holy Communion. As I told you, this was primarily the work of deacons, or else of priests: they would go and give Holy Communion to those who could not come—those who, for legitimate reasons, could not be present, especially the sick. Then he says, “for those who are afflicted.” Those who are afflicted are people who
—how shall I explain it?—are worn down by the various circumstances of life. They grow weary; they are squeezed, as we might say in modern language; they are oppressed. Who, then, is the afflicted person? The one oppressed by various circumstances. And then Saint Cyril says simply, so as not to speak at length: “For all who are in need of help.”
The Church prays for everyone who is in need of help. The Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great goes even further and speaks of those “in the mines.” Who were those who were in the mines?
At that time, the people working in the mines were not usually free laborers. They were mainly captives or slaves. Terrible, is it not? Terrible. It was generally forced labor—not in every case, but usually. So you see that all these people needed the Church to commemorate them. “And all of us, offering our supplications, offer this sacrifice.” He says that all of us offer this sacrifice while praying for them. A Church that could not commemorate others, or that did not include others in its commemoration, would be something strange and ugly. Here we see the Church’s great compassion and care.
Compassionate care. You know, a helper and protector is one who perceives and understands another’s need. We say of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) that she is our help and protection—that is, she understands us. The Church, then, comes to understand all those who suffer in any way in the world, even those who are not Christians. And now we come to the ninth paragraph: “Then”—which means afterward—“we also commemorate those who have fallen asleep before us: first, patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, so that through their prayers and intercessions God may receive our supplication.”
He says that we commemorate those who have fallen asleep: Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, and so forth. Let me continue a little, and then I shall return to this. “Then also for the holy fathers and bishops who have fallen asleep, and simply for all among us who have already fallen asleep, believing that the souls for whom the supplication is offered will receive the greatest benefit while the holy and most awe-inspiring sacrifice lies before us.” Afterward, he says, we pray for the departed—forgive me—for the holy Fathers and bishops who have fallen asleep, for the clergy, and for all those who died long ago, just as we do on the Saturdays of Souls.
We have Saturdays of Souls throughout the year. Every Saturday is dedicated to the souls of the departed, and two Saturdays in particular are appointed for the commemoration of everyone—our ancestors, grandfathers, and forefathers. You will have heard the familiar wording. And he says that we believe their souls will receive much benefit—indeed, “the greatest” benefit—when this supplication is offered over the sacrifice, over the Body and Blood of Christ: “while the holy and most awe-inspiring sacrifice lies before us.” We offer the supplication with the sacrifice before us. Did you hear how he describes it? Holy and most awe-inspiring. It lies before us, upon the Holy Table.
Let us pray for these departed souls. I would like to mention the next paragraph, and then I shall return to the ninth. Someone might ask: What kind of benefit can there be? This is why Saint Cyril raises the question. In the tenth paragraph he says—and I repeat, I shall return to the ninth—“And I wish to persuade you by means of an illustration.” In other words, I want to give you an example. “For I know that many say this: What benefit does a soul receive after departing from this world with sins?” What benefit, he asks, does the soul receive when it has left this present world bearing sins?
Whether it departed with sins, or even without sins, what benefit can it receive by being commemorated over the offering—that is, over the Body and Blood of Christ? I must tell you that both the living and the departed are commemorated twice during the Divine Liturgy. The first commemoration takes place at the Proskomide, and the second after the consecration of the Holy Gifts. But because there may be many names, and our people are unwilling to wait while all those names are commemorated, we wrongly omit the names of both the living and the departed after the consecration of the Holy Gifts.
You will remember that we began to read them after the consecration as well—I did so first, and then at the monastery—because that is the proper way. At the Proskomide we again have a sacrifice, but it is offered over bread and wine. Now, however, it is offered over the Body and Blood of Christ. Therefore, the commemoration after the consecration of the Holy Gifts is far more important. Yesterday, after a long time, I saw the prosphora, because they had not been taken up; God willing, they will go up tomorrow. My dear friends, I was astounded. You had sent so many prosphora. You are doing well. Still, I was amazed at how many there were. Of course, we elevate all of them, and so forth. But pay attention here.
When we held vigils, you would come bringing prosphora—many prosphora—and many names. One woman had the boldness to count them: there were about three thousand names. You will remember that we spent around half an hour commemorating them. You asked for it, then asked again, and again. I kept saying, “Yes, all right, all right.” Once we did it, because it was not merely technically difficult; it was extremely difficult in practical terms. With fewer names, it can be done. As for me, of course...
I commemorate a hundred or a hundred and fifty names after the consecration of the Holy Gifts in any case. And we also commemorate those for whom a memorial service is being held. Unfortunately, people could not remain there listening to one, two, or three thousand names. So in practice this has fallen away. But that is not right; it ought to be done. Perhaps we could at least commemorate the names in rotation. What else can I say? Let me say no more. Of course, when we bring prosphora, we want to submit some names. But when people include the man next door, the woman next door, the neighbor beyond them, and first, second, and third cousins, fifty names gather on a single sheet.
It can be managed if each person exercises restraint and lists only the names of those in the household. But when whole pages of names are submitted, truly... I shall say nothing more. I am merely explaining why, in practical terms, it is difficult to commemorate them all after the consecration of the Holy Gifts. But I return to the text. Here Saint Cyril gives an illustration; he offers an example. Before I tell you what he says in that example, however, let me say something else. Here he calls it an illustration; we would call it an example. It is the same thing. Pay attention: an example—and take careful note of this—does not constitute proof.
It serves to clarify. When we give an example in a particular case—I say it once again—an example never, ever constitutes proof. Anyone who knows how to construct and present a scholarly argument, saying, “This is so for these reasons,” knows that an indication is never a proof. An experiment may, of course, constitute proof, but it must not be isolated; it must be properly supported, and so forth. An example never constitutes proof. It only clarifies a truth that we wish to express. Therefore, what Saint Cyril is about to say is not proof. It is simply an example that clarifies his meaning—nothing more. Remember this. Very often people come and give you an example, then use it as proof of their own position. Simply tell them, “Forgive me, but what you have given is an example; it cannot constitute proof.” I especially ask those of you who may have reason to speak on such matters to pay close attention to this. For example, some wish to defend kismet—fate or destiny—and they tell you a story. I believe I have mentioned this before. They say that there was once a man...
Uh...
He was very poor, and his friends wanted to help him without embarrassing him. They said, “We’ll drop a purse of gold coins in his path.” So, as he was walking along, they dropped the purse at a certain point on the road. Just before he reached the place where it lay, he said to himself, “I wonder how people who cannot see walk. What must it be like? Let me try.” So he closed his eyes and walked right past the purse. When he opened them again, of course he did not see it, because he had already passed it. And now people say, “You see? This proves that kismet—fate—exists.” It proves no such thing. It is merely an example that illustrates the point we wish to support. Can this ever serve as proof? Never!
I am telling you this—pay attention—because a great many things are circulated and presented as proof. Unless we know how to construct an argument with complete logical rigor, as in mathematics or physics, an example remains only an example. I have said it five times: it is not proof.
I will continue now with the illustration—the example—that Saint Cyril of Jerusalem gives: “Suppose a king were to exile certain people who had offended him. If their relatives then wove a crown and presented it to the king on behalf of those being punished, would he not surely grant them relief from their punishment?”
That is, if he had sent some people into exile...
And if those who are in a different position from the exiles—that is, those who are not themselves in exile—should weave garlands and offer them to the king on behalf of the exiles, would not the king look favorably upon them? This is the example he gives when he says, “Would he not grant them some relief from their punishments?” And now Saint Cyril says: “In the same way, we too”—we do the very same thing—“when we offer supplications to Him on behalf of the departed, even if they are sinners”—forgive me—“even if they are sinners, we do not weave a garland; rather, we offer Christ, sacrificed for our sins, beseeching the God who loves mankind to be merciful both to them and to us.” Here we do not have a garland to offer; we have the very Body and Blood of Christ. How much more, then, will the departed be helped! My dear friends, it is the faith of the Church—and all who have written on this subject affirm it—that the departed are greatly benefited by the Divine Liturgy celebrated and offered to God, even though they have left this present world. Saint Kabasilas—Saint Nicholas Kabasilas—
He even says that the departed benefit more than the living. And there is something else: it is not simply a matter of having your body in order to receive Holy Communion, because the soul also partakes. Therefore, the souls of the departed also become partakers of the Body and Blood of Christ, since they have been incorporated into the Body and Blood of Christ. Pay close attention to this point.
We say that we celebrate the Divine Liturgy. We have the Body and Blood of Christ. Our own people—those we knew, our friends, our parents, our relatives—did they not receive Holy Communion when they were alive? Were they not therefore united with the Body of Christ? Did not all the saints receive Holy Communion?
They are united with the Body and Blood of Christ. It makes no difference that body and soul have been separated. All who are united with the Body and Blood of Christ receive every blessing that flows from the Body and Blood of Christ whenever we celebrate the Divine Liturgy. Those of you who obtain the volume I mentioned will find in it a very substantial commentary on the departed. It is in the fifth Mystagogical Catechesis, perhaps section five or six—I do not remember exactly. I looked it up and saw it myself, which is why I am telling you. You can read it; a great deal is written there. In any case, the departed are benefited. This is the faith of the Church. And take note that the presence of the Saints is not a merely abstract presence.
That is, their presence is not merely abstract, bare, or conceptual. It is real. For when we commemorate the Saints, the Saints are present. In what manner, in what way? They are always united with the Body and Blood of Christ. It is impossible to conceive, even for a moment, that the Church triumphant and the Church militant could ever remain separated from the Body and Blood of Christ. This is unthinkable even for a moment, because this is what the Church means: the Body and Blood of Christ. Thus, I repeat, the Saints are present at a divine service, as indeed are all the departed, in a manner perceived by spiritual vision. On the Holy Diskos we also place the portions commemorating the living.
The portions for the departed. It would be futile to place portions for the departed on the holy diskos if we supposed that the departed received no benefit from them. Pay close attention, then: this is given a particularly central place within the Divine Liturgy, and indeed the whole theology and praxis—the active life—of the Church are centered upon this truth: that the departed are also benefited. But does this apply to all the departed? What if some act of impiety caused them to separate themselves from the Church? To help us understand this, I will read to you from Book Eight of the Apostolic Constitutions.
You see, we had not gone very far. Let me read it to you: “Let the third-day memorials for those who have fallen asleep be celebrated with psalms, readings, and prayers, because of Him who rose on the third day.” Memorial services are to be held, he says. And how? On behalf of the departed, as you see. With what? With psalms, readings, and prayers. When? On the third day. These are the third-day commemorations, just as we observe them in practice—after three days, at what we call the three-day memorial. A brief aside: when we set out the wheat—for a memorial service can also be held without wheat—the wheat, my dear friends...
The symbol of the resurrection of the dead. Without going on at length, this example is drawn both from the words of Christ and from the words of the Apostle Paul, who speaks of the grain of wheat and regards it as a symbol of the resurrection of the dead. He gives it as an example in the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians. So, without dwelling on it further, the kollyva—that is, the memorial wheat—is the symbol of the resurrection of the dead. The memorial, then, is to be held on the third day. Why? “Because He rose on the third day.” Because Christ rose on the third day,
a commemoration of the resurrection of the dead may be held. And take note: I will say it once again—the wheat, since the text here speaks of the risen Lord, is always the symbol of the Resurrection. It falls into the earth and decays, but then springs up anew. That is why it is the symbol of the Resurrection. “And the ninth-day memorials, in remembrance of those still living and those who have fallen asleep.” The ninth-day memorials—that is, after nine days. Here it says “in remembrance,” so that we may remember both the living and those who have fallen asleep. “And the fortieth-day memorials, according to the ancient type.” What is this ancient type?
“For thus did the people mourn for Moses.” The people mourned Moses for forty days. This is the ancient type. “And an annual commemoration in his memory.” At the end of the year as well, so that we may remember him. “And from his possessions let something be given to the poor in his memory.” Thus, we have memorial services at three days, nine days, forty days, and at the one-year anniversary. We may also hold one every year. Take note: if we wish, we may hold a memorial service every day. There is absolutely no obstacle—none at all. Whenever we wish.
We may hold a memorial service or a Trisagion for the departed. The difference between a memorial service and a Trisagion is simply that, in the Trisagion, we do not chant certain troparia, so it is shorter. The prayer for the departed, however, is the same in both the memorial service and the Trisagion. You should know this: it is the same prayer. He then continues: “And let some of his possessions be given to the poor in his memory”—that is, let some of what he owned be given to the poor so that they may remember him. Yet this does more than preserve his memory. It also contributes to the repose of the departed. We give some of his money or belongings so that people may remember and commemorate him. His soul is benefited—pay attention to this. Why do I keep saying, “Pay attention”? Because in the next paragraph it says: “But we say these things concerning the devout.” Everything we have said applies to the devout. “As for the impious, even if you give the poor all the wealth in the world, you will not benefit him at all.” Even if you gave away everything in the world—indeed, the whole world itself—you would do him no benefit whatsoever.
Do you see what it says here? “You will not benefit him in any way.” Therefore, if the departed person was pious, you will benefit him; it will help him. Do you see how this meaning emerges indirectly? If an impious person receives no benefit from the almsgiving performed by the living, the pious person does receive benefit from almsgiving given out of his possessions, as I told you in the previous paragraph. But what does “impious” mean?
The god-fearing person, you might ask for a moment, “What need does he have of such help afterward? Since he was god-fearing, he has gone to the Kingdom of God,” and so on. My beloved, pay attention. I mean, he has gone to Paradise. When it says “the god-fearing,” it does not mean someone who is sinless, because godliness does not mean sinlessness. It means that a person has a reverent fear of God and conducts himself accordingly. The ungodly person is one who is an enemy of God, one who has fought against God. For example—what shall I say? Should I give examples now? I often become the subject of criticism for this. Take Kazantzakis: are we now supposed to admit him into the Church? What does “admit him” mean?
They cast him out. Even if a thousand memorial services were held at his grave, they would be of no effect. He would receive no benefit whatsoever. On his tomb they can write, as he himself said—he himself chose this epitaph: “I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.” For, according to this view, the person who believes is in bondage, while the person who does not believe is free. Listen to such a way of thinking; listen to such a position. What, then, does this mean? It means that whoever departed this present life separated from God—and this is what is called impiety—receives no benefit whatsoever. None whatsoever!
Even if we give away all his possessions and hold memorial services for him, he receives no benefit at all. A sinner is not the same as an ungodly person. My dear friends, all of us present here—judging by the very fact that we are here—are sinners: both I who speak to you and you who listen to me. But we are not ungodly. God preserve us! We are simply sinners. Memorial services are offered for sinners, not for the ungodly. I believe the distinction has now been made clear. But if you ask me to speak a little more practically, you may say: “Many people may have openly professed their atheism and unbelief. Of course, they were baptized as children, but afterward they renounced the faith, and so forth. What about them?”
“Should we not hold a memorial service for them? Would that not cause a public scandal? Would it not mean that we had decided beforehand that they would not be saved?” Well, we do hold memorial services for them—but on what grounds? A person dies who may have been an atheist through and through, or perhaps a blasphemer, or something of that kind. He closes his eyes and can no longer communicate with the outside world. Who can tell us that, at that very moment, he did not say, “Forgive me, my God”? Can anyone assure us that this person could not have said those words?
So he may indeed have said, “Forgive me, my God.” We hold a memorial service for him. We do. The text then says, “We say these things concerning the devout.” Yes, I read the whole passage to you. And what does it say next? Listen to the reason it gives and how it explains it: “For he who, while still alive, was an enemy of God”—while he lived, he was an enemy of God—“clearly remains so after his departure.” It is evident that even after his death he remains an enemy of God. How, then, can we hold a memorial service and pray for him? “For there is no injustice with Him; for the Lord is righteous and loves righteousness.” What does this mean? The man denied God. He himself denied Him.
Am I now to help him against his own choice? God is righteous. “And behold, the man and his work.” This final phrase is from Isaiah, chapter 62, verse 11. In other words, behold the man and his work. If the man is righteous, his work is righteous; if he is ungodly, his work is ungodly as well. Therefore, since God is righteous, He can never receive that person if he truly departed with an ungodly heart. All this, of course, concerns memorial services. But there is one more point to address before we finish these paragraphs. The text says that we commemorate the Martyrs, Apostles, Prophets, Patriarchs, and so forth. We say this in the Divine Liturgy as well.
What does this mean? The word “for” is even used. Does it mean—listen carefully—that we pray for them to be saved, as though, for example, the Apostles needed such a prayer? Certainly not. It means this: we call upon the Saints and Martyrs to pray for us to the Lord of Glory, whose Body and Blood lie before us upon the Holy Table. And so, my dear friends, we have now completed this paragraph concerning the commemoration of both the living and the departed. Beginning with the eleventh paragraph, there is a...
...brief but very useful subject, which may occupy almost the entire remainder of the catechesis. It concerns what is called the Lord’s Prayer, the familiar “Our Father.” I repeat, Saint Cyril speaks very briefly, but we can say a little more, so that we may use this opportunity to examine the Lord’s Prayer as well. It is called the Lord’s Prayer because the Lord Himself gave it. God willing, we shall continue on Monday after next. May the Lord bless you.

Εύχεται η Εκκλησία για όλους εκείνους οι οποίοι έχουν ανάγκη βοηθείας. Η λειτουργία του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου λέει πέρα εκείνων που είναι «των εν μετάλλοις», των πλέον ότι μπορούν, εν μετάλλοις. Ποιοι είναι εκείνοι που είναι στα μεταλλεία;
Να ευχηθούμε για αυτούς τους κεκοιμημένους. Θα ήθελα να πω την επομένη παράγραφο, θα ξαναγυρίσω στην ενάτη. Κάποιος μπορεί να πει, δηλαδή, δηλαδή, τι είδους ωφέλεια μπορεί να... Γι' αυτό θέτει το θέμα ο Άγιος Κύριλλος και λέγει στη δεκάτη παράγραφο — σας επαναλαμβάνω, θα γυρίσω εις την ενάτη — «καὶ βούλομαι ὑμᾶς δι' ὑποδείγματος πεῖσαι». Και θέλω να σας πω ένα παράδειγμα. «Οἶδα γὰρ πολλοὺς τοῦτο λέγοντας». Διότι είδα πολλούς να λένε τούτο: «Τί ὠφελεῖται ψυχὴ μετὰ ἁμαρτημάτων ἀπαλλαγεῖσα τοῦδε τοῦ κόσμου;» Τι, λέγει, ωφελείται η ψυχή όταν έφυγε από τον παρόντα κόσμο με αμαρτήματα;
Λέμε Λέμε ότι τελούμε τη Θεία Λειτουργία. Έχουμε το Σώμα και το Αίμα του Χριστού. Εκείνοι οι δικοί μας, οι γνωστοί μας, οι φίλοι μας, οι γονείς μας, οι συγγενείς μας, όταν ζούσαν δεν κοινωνούσαν; Συνεπώς δεν ενώθησαν με το Σώμα του Χριστού; Όλοι οι Άγιοι δεν κοινωνούσαν;
γίνει μνήμη της Αναστάσεως των νεκρών. Σημειώσατε δε, το σιτάρι, θα το ξαναπώ άλλη μια φορά, επειδή μιλάει εδώ για τον αναστάντα Κύριον, λέγει, είναι πάντα το σύμβολο της Αναστάσεως. Πέφτει στη γη, σαπίζει, αλλά φυτρώνει καινούργιο. Γι' αυτό είναι το σύμβολο της Αναστάσεως. «Και ένατα εις υπόμνησιν των περιόντων και των κεκοιμημένων». Και ένατα, δηλαδή τις εννέα μέρες. Εδώ λέγει «εις υπόμνησιν», για να θυμόμαστε και τους ζώντες και τους κεκοιμημένους. «Και τεσσαρακοστά κατά τον παλαιόν τύπον». Ποιος είναι ο παλαιός τύπος;
Είδατε εδώ τι λέει; «Ουδέν ονήσεις αυτόν». Άρα, λοιπόν, εάν ευσεβής, ονήσεις αυτόν, λέει, θα τον ωφελήσει. Βλέπετε πώς λέει; Βγαίνει έμμεσα. Διότι, αν δεν ωφελείται ο ασεβής από την ελεημοσύνη που την κάνουν οι ζώντες, αλλά ωφελείται, όμως, ο ευσεβής από την ελεημοσύνη των υπαρχόντων, αυτό που σας είπα στην πιο πάνω παράγραφο. Τι θα πει ασεβής;
Ευσεβής, γιατί μπορεί να πείτε για μια στιγμή: «Και τι ανάγκη μετά έχει ο ευσεβής; Αφού είναι ευσεβής, πήγε στη Βασιλεία του Θεού κτλ., κτλ.». Αγαπητοί μου, προσέξτε. Δηλαδή στον Παράδεισο εννοώ. Όταν λέει «ευσεβή», δεν εννοεί ότι είναι αναμάρτητος, διότι η ευσέβεια δεν καθορίζει την αναμαρτησία. Καθορίζει τη θεοφοβή στάση του ανθρώπου απέναντι στον Θεό. Αυτός είναι ο ασεβής, εκείνος ο οποίος είναι εχθρός του Θεού. Πολέμησε τον Θεό. Φερ' ειπείν. Τι να πω; Να πω και παραδείγματα τώρα; Γίνομαι και πολλές φορές αντικείμενο σχολίων. Ο Καζαντζάκης, τώρα πρέπει να τον αφήνουμε στην Εκκλησία. Τι θα πει αφήνουμε;
Όλα τα υπάρχοντά του να δώσουμε και μνημόσυνα να κάνουμε, δεν έχει ουδεμίαν ωφέλειαν. Ο αμαρτωλός δεν είναι ασεβής. Αγαπητοί μου, αυτή τη στιγμή εδώ οι παρόντες, κατά τεκμήριον με την παρουσία μας, είμαστε αμαρτωλοί, και εγώ που σας μιλώ και εσείς που με ακούτε, αλλά δεν είμαστε ασεβείς. Ο Θεός να μας φυλάξει. Απλώς είμαστε αμαρτωλοί. Δια τους αμαρτωλούς ο λόγος των μνημοσύνων, όχι δια τους ασεβείς. Πιστεύω ότι έγινε σαφές το θέμα, πώς διακρίνεται. Αν μου πείτε, όμως, να μιλήσουμε λίγα και πιο πραγματικά, αν μου πείτε: «Μα πολλοί μπορεί να ομολόγησαν την αθεΐα τους, την απιστία τους. Βέβαια, κάποια στιγμή βαφτίστηκαν, φυσικά, παιδιά, αλλά κατόπιν, όμως, απεμπόλησαν τη θρησκεία και τα λοιπά και τα λοιπά. Αυτοί τι;
Μην τους κάνουμε μνημόσυνο; Δεν θα γίνεται και ένα δημόσιο σκάνδαλο; Ότι, δηλαδή, τι; Προκαθορίσαμε ότι αυτοί δεν θα σωθούν;». Λοιπόν, κάνουμε και σε αυτούς μνημόσυνο, αλλά με ποιο, όμως, με ποιο σκεπτικόν; Ένας άνθρωπος που πεθαίνει και να υπήρξε άθεος και άθεος και, ξέρω εγώ, ξέρω εγώ, ή να υπήρξε βλάσφημος και λοιπά, πεθαίνει. Έχει κλείσει τα μάτια του και δεν επικοινωνεί με τον έξω κόσμο. Ποιος μας πληροφορεί ότι αυτός ο άνθρωπος, τη στιγμή εκείνη, δεν είπε ένα «Συγχώρησέ με, Θεέ μου»; Είναι κανείς σε θέση να μας το βεβαιώσει, ότι δεν μπορεί να το είπε εκείνος ο άνθρωπος;
