Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis presents selected central elements of the Divine Liturgy to the newly baptized. The Liturgies associated with Saint Basil the Great and Saint John Chrysostom emerged through the refinement of received ecclesial worship rather than invention by individual authors. Instructions about standing, silence, closed doors, deacons, fans, and other ritual details demonstrate the need for reverence, order, and preservation of the Divine Liturgy’s historical inheritance.

Remember, we had reached the Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, which is also the last. It deals with a selection of passages from the Divine Liturgy, in order to help the catechumens who had been baptized and illumined gain an overall picture of the Divine Liturgy. Of course, Saint Cyril does not give a full analysis of the Divine Liturgy. As I told you, he simply selects certain passages—passages that could indeed be considered essential by anyone wishing to interpret the Divine Liturgy.
They are very important. In any case, these passages have particular value and significance. We have already reached the third paragraph, which concerns the kiss, the greeting of peace. We have already mentioned the deacon's words: “Receive one another, and let us greet one another.” In other words, each person must accept the other. We must not behave as unfortunately sometimes happens in our churches, when two people who have quarreled stand apart, one here and the other there, turning their backs and faces away and refusing even to say good morning. That is what “receive one another” means: accept one another.
Then comes, “Let us greet one another”—with the Greek verb spelled with an omega. Let them greet one another with the holy kiss, because, as Saint Cyril told us, this kiss “unites the souls with one another.” That is, it mingles the souls together, bringing them very close and joining them to one another. This is why it is called holy. We spoke about this last time. I had left only one final sentence, which I shall now mention so that we may complete this paragraph. Saint Cyril says: “Therefore, the kiss is reconciliation.”
He says that the kiss is reconciliation. What does reconciliation mean? It means that we have made peace with the other person. We have been reconciled, and there is no longer any hostility. “And for this reason it is holy”; that is why it is called a holy kiss. “Just as the blessed Peter”—Saint Peter writes somewhere—“Greet...” Forgive me, it is the Apostle Paul who says: “Greet one another with a holy kiss.” Greet one another with a holy kiss—not a deceitful kiss, but a holy kiss. And the Apostle Peter says...
“Greet one another with a kiss of love.” This is why the kiss is a kiss of reconciliation, restoration of peace, and mutual forgiveness.
This paragraph now comes to an end, but allow me to tell you something that we shall also need a little later. In the so-called Apostolic Constitutions there is a collection of eight books. When we say “book,” do not imagine a volume like the one you see here. All eight books are contained in this single volume and do not even fill the entire volume. By “books,” we may mean only a few sections or leaves, although they are called books. Thus, the Apostolic Constitutions consist of eight books. I do not intend to explain exactly what the Apostolic Constitutions are.
I would only like to tell you that they were certainly not written by the Holy Apostles, because if they had been, they would undoubtedly have been included in the New Testament. Nevertheless, they reflect the teaching of the Holy Apostles as we have received it in Holy Scripture, in the New Testament. They may contain more extensive interpretations and other material. This is what we confess in the Creed: “In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.” The Apostles founded the Church through their teaching, which they themselves had received from the Lord. Besides, the New Testament does not contain the Lord's teaching in its entirety.
Was everything written down? I do not wish to dwell on the matter, but, as I told you, there are things that were not written down. Does not Paul, for example, say “by the word of the Lord” that the Lord said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive”? That saying is not written anywhere in the New Testament; it is one of the things that were not recorded there. This is what the Evangelist John says: if everything had to be written down, perhaps all the libraries of the world could not contain the books. Certainly. There is also what Paul says to the Thessalonians “by the word of the Lord”: that the godly will rise first, and so forth.
Yet the New Testament does not spell out who will rise first, exactly how this will happen, and all the other details. Therefore, these eight books known as the Apostolic Constitutions reflect the teaching of the Holy Apostles—that is, the teaching of the Gospel. We might say that they are a tradition which was simply committed to writing. I am speaking only in broad terms, because I do not wish to go into greater detail. In the same way, a Divine Liturgy was also recorded. Of course, it is not written as we would find it today in a priest's service book. This material is found in the eighth book of the Apostolic Constitutions, and the simple reason is that the Divine Liturgy had not yet taken...
its final form.
For example, Saint Justin, who lived in the middle of the second century, tells us that the bishop offered prayers during the Liturgy, especially prayers concerning the celebration of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Saint Justin uses the brief phrase, “according to his ability.” We also find this phrase in other writings belonging to the tradition of the Apostolic Fathers, the successors of the Apostles: “according to his ability.” Grammatically, the phrase is in the dative case. It means that the bishop offered prayers according to the measure of his ability and inspiration...
and so forth. Therefore, the Divine Liturgy had not yet been formed as we have it today. It simply had not. It is enough to mention that some eighty prayers of the Holy Anaphora have survived. The Anaphora is a very extensive prayer and forms the heart of the Divine Liturgy, because within it the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is celebrated. This prayer is divided into many parts. The “Amen” spoken by the people is one part, and so forth. The preface to this prayer begins where the priest says, “Let us lift up our hearts.” The people answer, “We lift them up unto the Lord.”
“Let us give thanks unto the Lord.” “It is meet and right.” The prayer begins there with the words, “It is meet and right,” and continues. It ends with the proclamation, “And the mercies of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ shall be with you all.” That is where it ends. This single prayer has been divided into many parts.
It is, in a manner of speaking, a dialogue among the priest, the deacon, and the people. When I say “the people,” I mean the chanters; and when we say “the chanters,” we mean the people, because in earlier times all the people chanted. This is an inalienable right of the people. So...
Some eighty such Holy Anaphoras survive. What does this show? It shows that the bishop possessed a certain freedom in composing the prayers. The Liturgy preserved in the eighth book of the Apostolic Constitutions has this characteristic: it is not fully written out. As I shall read to you later, it contains the rubrical elements—that is, directions explaining how something is to be done—while the words to be spoken are not recorded. Let me also tell you something else. This Liturgy is called the Liturgy of Saint Clement of Rome, but it is not actually by Saint Clement of Rome. Saint Clement of Rome is an Apostolic Father.
He lived in the apostolic age and saw and heard the Apostle Peter. But those attributions—what can I say? In any case, they are not exact. I shall say nothing more about it. You will find this service called the Liturgy of Saint Clement, but it is not by Saint Clement. Nor is the description “through the hand of Saint Clement” accurate. Why his name was attached to it is another story. I cannot tell you more; neither time nor anything else permits it. I shall say only that this Liturgy, judging from the elements preserved in it, is extremely ancient. It reflects elements...
that Saint Cyril himself knew. When he delivered this catechesis, it was the year 350 after Christ. We did not yet have the Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great or, later, that of Saint John Chrysostom. Saint Basil the Great did not invent a Liturgy. He refined what he had received, and Saint John Chrysostom refined what he had received from Saint Basil the Great. The Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom is shorter. What we have, therefore, is a literary refinement. Indeed, the Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great is considered to have received a masterful literary polishing and embellishment...
It is a masterpiece from a literary standpoint. But no one invented or wrote a Liturgy from the beginning—not Saint Basil the Great, not the so-called Liturgy of Saint Clement, not Saint James, and not Saint John Chrysostom. The Liturgy arose from the living worship of the Church. Each bishop, “according to his ability”—according to the capacity and inspiration granted to him—composed prayers. All of these prayers centered upon one thing: the celebration of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist.
However, because something in the Divine Liturgy still remained open and unfixed...
the heretics tried to take advantage of that openness and introduce their own heretical elements. Do not forget that the New Testament—the collection of books belonging to the New Testament—was likewise, for a time, an open question. When the Church saw that people could write heretical books and claim that they belonged to the New Testament, she acted quickly and closed the New Testament canon. The recognized Canon of the New Testament, just like the Canon of the Old Testament, declares: “The New Testament contains twenty-seven books—not one more and not one less.” Why? Because in this way the Church excluded...
This prevented a heretical book from being inserted and passed off as a book of Holy Scripture, as part of the New Testament. The same thing now happened with the Liturgy. The Church hastened to fix the text of the Liturgy—that is, no longer to permit bishops this freedom of inspiration. Once the Liturgy had been fixed—and the first such fixing, though I am not a liturgical scholar and do not know the details, may perhaps have been that of Saint Basil the Great—the aim was to prevent heretical elements from entering it. Here, however, I still see that freedom, that openness. And there is something so graceful about it.
If you take a look at it, you will say, “There! This is what Saint Basil the Great drew upon and refined into the Liturgy which, as I explained, is a literary masterpiece.” So when Saint Cyril says certain things—things we shall examine shortly—where did he take them from? He took them from the Divine Liturgy while its form was still open, such as the one we find in Book Eight of the Apostolic Constitutions. I needed to give you this introduction, both so that we might learn something more and so that we can understand certain details. Concerning the kiss, then, the Liturgy of the Apostolic Constitutions says the following.
“Let us attend”—that means, let us pay attention. “And after this, let the deacon say, ‘Let us attend,’ and let the bishop greet the Church and say, ‘The peace of God be with you all.’ And let the people answer, ‘And with your spirit.’” You have wished peace upon us, and we in turn wish peace within your soul. That is what “And with your spirit” means: may the peace of God be in your soul.
“Let the deacon say to all, ‘Greet one another with a holy kiss.’” Greet one another with a holy kiss. Now listen to a practical detail. I mentioned it last time when I told you how this is done in the Russian Church. We no longer preserve it, particularly at the Paschal Divine Liturgy. Of course, we did not receive this from the Russians; unquestionably, the Russians received it from us, since they embraced Christianity around the tenth century. Now notice what the text says: “And let the clergy greet the bishop, the laymen greet the laymen, and the women greet the women.” Men and women were not all mixed together, kissing one another. The male laity greeted one another, and the women greeted one another. What does “layman” mean? Someone who belongs to the people and not to the clergy. The men were to greet one another, and the women likewise. How beautiful! I would like to know what would happen if one woman had quarreled with another and the time came for them to exchange the kiss. She would have to leave her place. The Lord said, “Leave your gift there,” and go first to be reconciled. What does this kiss signify? Reconciliation. Go and find her...
...there in the Church. Kiss her. What will she do? She will kiss you in return. It would therefore be something very beautiful: a communion of love, as the Apostle Peter says. If you wish, let me read something further on as a brief aside, so that you may hear what beautiful things it says. Listen: “Let the children stand near the sanctuary.” The children are right at the front, just as even today children go to the very front. “And let another deacon stand over them, so that they do not become disorderly.” Deacons today are more or less...
...decorative figures. But a deacon once had work to do, and there were many deacons. Here, for example, a deacon stands near the children and watches over them so that they do not misbehave. The Church therefore included the children. When I see parents allowing their children to wander around inside the Church without gathering them in—what a terrible thing that is! My dear friends, watch your children. Gather them and keep them close to you. Today we do not have deacons to watch over them. Every mother and every father must keep...
...their child or children close at hand. Do not say, “I do not go to Church because our children misbehave.” No. You will bring the children so that they may learn to be at home in this environment—the environment of the Church. This is necessary, and the children must, of course, be sanctified. But you must watch over them. It is necessary. Do you have many children? How many young children can there be—one, two, three, or four years old? An older child will sit quietly. If there are one or two younger ones, the father takes one and the mother the other, and they watch them. “And let other deacons walk about.”
They walk throughout the Church and keep watch over the men and the women, so that no disturbance arises. It is like saying, “Shh, madam, be quiet! Madam, shh, please be quiet!” In other words, deacons moved around inside the Church to prevent any disturbance before it began.
“Let no one make signs, whisper, or fall asleep.” They were to walk around and watch whether anyone was signaling to someone else, whispering, or nodding off. I remember the late Elder Gabriel, abbot of the Holy Monastery of Dionysiou on the Holy Mountain, where the services are held very early, during the night. We would go to the Church at two or three in the morning. He would take a candle, because there were no lights inside and it was almost completely dark. Thank you.
Then he would go from stall to stall. Each person would be there in his place, asleep, and the elder would wake him. That was the ancient order. What a beautiful, living Church! A Church truly alive, a joy to behold. If someone reads these texts and compares them with the present day, he can only weep over what happens in our time. Of course, many things have been preserved, but some have also been lost. There is one more thing I would like us to understand. It is an Orthodox element, but unfortunately it is being eroded by a foreign spirit, whether Latin or Protestant: in those days, everyone inside the Church knew that together they formed one body.
Was there a wedding? The whole Church would be there. Was there a Baptism? The whole Church would be there. Today, as you know, we send invitations to weddings and baptisms. Allow me to say that this business of “invitations” is a sorry state of affairs. Yes, the whole Church ought to be notified that there is to be a wedding or a Baptism. And these were celebrated within the Divine Liturgy. That is why both Holy Matrimony and Baptism begin with “Blessed is the Kingdom.” This shows that these two Mysteries came from the Divine Liturgy and were later separated from it. Has someone died? The same applies. Is there a memorial service? Again, the same. I ask those of you who hear the word of God: when you are in one of your churches...
...wherever it may be, and a memorial service is being held, do not say, “I did not know that person, so I am going home. I have cooking to do,” as a woman might say. No. You will remain until the memorial service is finished. He is one of our own, a member of our Church. He was baptized, he fell asleep in the Lord, and we shall pray for his repose. “But we do not know him.” We ought to know him. We ought to know him. The Church is not an individual affair; neither worship nor the Divine Liturgy is an individual affair. It concerns the entire Church.
That is why it is called a liturgy: leitourgia means a work of the people, a public work. We are all together, conscious of the whole, whereas in the Protestant world there is a sense of individualism: “I must be saved, and I do not care who the other person is.” Today, my dear friends, we do not even know who is sitting beside us. And you may say, “Why should I care?” No, you should care. Do you know what the deacons used to proclaim during the Divine Liturgy? “Let none of the catechumens remain; let none of those under metanoia remain.” Those undergoing metanoia, or repentance, remained outside the Church. No unbaptized person remained; the catechumens, after all, were unbaptized. Do you know what happened at that moment? It has been preserved in the Litany of the Catechumens in the Divine Liturgy and remains almost on our lips to this day.
The faithful who were standing there would look around. “Let none of the catechumens remain. All you faithful...” We say, “Let none of the catechumens remain. All you faithful, again and again let us pray.” The faithful looked this way and that, in front and behind, to see whether any catechumen was still present. If there was, they would say, “You must leave; go outside.” “The doors! The doors!” The doors were then closed. The deacon proclaimed this, and the doorkeepers closed them. The office of doorkeeper was a ministry in the Church: it involved closing the doors. The doors were shut so that no unbeliever, catechumen, or anyone else who should not remain was present.
The faithful were like guards among themselves, looking to see whether anyone remained who should not be present during the Divine Liturgy. But in order to know that, they had to know one another. Thus, within the Church, people knew the person beside them. How beautiful that is! Today we say, “I do not care.” The doors are no longer closed. No one cares who enters—the Freemason, the unbeliever, or anyone else. Such a person may not only attend the Liturgy but may even come forward to receive Holy Communion. By comparing the earliest times with today, we see how many things are now different and how we ourselves ought to be formed. Of course, some things can be restored. So we see precisely how order and life existed within the Church.
Would you like me to say something more? Immediately after “The doors! The doors!” the deacon says: “Let none of the catechumens remain, none of the hearers, none of the unbelievers, none of the heterodox.” Let none of these remain. “Having offered the first prayer, draw near. Mothers, take your children in your arms.” This refers to the very smallest children, the infants. We do not put them outside. And here is something worth noting: those very small children were therefore baptized. This means that infant Baptism existed.
Infant Baptism, then, is a practice dating from antiquity. Why do some people, following the heterodox, say that a person must be baptized only when grown, and so forth? No! Certainly, we may baptize small children when the whole family is Christian. And, naturally, small children must also receive Holy Communion; they must not be deprived of it. The text also says, “Let no one have anything against another.” No one must be hostile toward anyone else or bear enmity. “Let no one remain in hypocrisy...”
That is, let no one remain inside while hypocritically pretending to believe, to have been baptized, or anything of that kind. “Stand upright before the Lord.” “Standing with fear and trembling, let us offer. Stand upright before the Lord”—let us rise. Indeed, a woman was telling me today about something which, unfortunately, is repeatedly observed. While the Creed is being recited, people remain seated. Yes, they sit there, even with one leg crossed over the other, as if they were in a café. My dear friends, we lack liturgical formation. We learn etiquette: that when we eat, the knife should be on our right and the fork on our left; that we should not chew like goats...
...with our mouths open; that we should keep our lips closed and eat slowly with our mouths shut, and so on. We learn these things as good manners for when we sit at a formal table. I am not saying that we should not learn them; I have no objection to that. But I do object to this: if we learn proper conduct there, should we have no proper conduct at the supper, at the table of the Lord, in the Divine Liturgy? Should that be where we display our lack of formation? No, my dear friends. From the moment I enter the church building—and I have spoken of these things before...
When we visit someone’s sitting room, we wipe our shoes first, do we not? If all of you were to rise and leave now, with only a few remaining, you would see how many scraps of paper have been thrown on the floor here. When we visit someone, do we throw scraps of paper on the floor of the sitting room? Of course not. This shows how much we lack the liturgical formation I have been speaking about. We need to acquire it. “Stand upright,” then, “before the Lord”—let us rise. The phrases “Stand upright. With fear...” and “Wisdom. Stand upright” have the same force. Let me say just this: “Wisdom”—full stop. “Stand upright”—full stop. They are two very short sentences.
“Stand upright,” it means. The rest is understood. The book we are holding—that is, the Gospel—is the wisdom of God. So: “Wisdom!” And since it is the wisdom of God, we should neither stand carelessly nor remain seated. “Stand upright”—that is, stand upright. We must learn these things. You know, sitting during the Divine Liturgy has not been forbidden, even from the earliest days of the Church. How can one explain everything? There are so many other beautiful things as well. We may sit, but we must know when to sit, when to stand, when to kneel, and when to make the sign of the precious Cross. These are not trivial details. They reveal a people who are...
educated in the life of the Church, formed and instructed in the Liturgy—a people who know how to worship their God. As the Apostle Paul says in such cases, our God is not a God of disorder but a God of order. And it says something else as well: “Let two deacons stand, one on either side of the altar.” The altar means the Holy Table. Two deacons, one on this side and one on the other. Take note of this too.
“Made of membranes”—the Greek word is hymen, with an upsilon and a rough breathing. A hymen is something made from a thin membrane. “A fan made of thin membranes.” A fan is used to stir the air. “Or of peacock feathers, or of linen”—that is, cloth—“and let them gently drive away the small flying creatures.”
The small flying creatures are flies—flies—“so that they do not fall into the cups.” What are these cups? The Holy Diskos and the Holy Chalice. “Then, while the bishop prays silently...” and so forth. These feathers, or these fans...
made of membranes or linen cloth, served this purpose: they stirred the air. Today, you know, the priest takes one of the veils with which we cover the sacred vessels—the Holy Chalice and the Holy Diskos—and holds it over the Holy Gifts, moving it gently around them. What is he doing? He is fanning them. Our service book says, “and he fans the Holy Gifts.” In other words, he stirs the air, so to speak. This is a surviving trace, a remnant of that ancient fanning motion. Do you know how many such remnants we have within the Divine Liturgy? We must remove nothing—not even a single “and.” Everything has its own history, and...
when such things remain as traces of the past, they allow us to learn that history. Many people say, “What is the point of this, and what is the point of that?” No, no; we will not remove even a single “and.” If we are willing to look more deeply, we will learn the history of these things. Such objects are called furnishings—furnishings. The word does not refer only to what we call furniture in our homes—a cupboard, a sideboard, and so forth. These objects too are called furnishings.
These things, as time passes, cease to be used. We might say that today—and even in earlier times—we have other ways of keeping flies away, though not necessarily at this very moment. We do have a way. But should we therefore throw away these things and lose their history?
Behind the Holy Table, my dear friends, we place what we know as the hexapteryga, the six-winged fans. These were liturgical fans. Their very shape shows their purpose: they were waved like this over the holy sacred vessels so that nothing would fall into them.
This was all the more necessary in countries where insects are abundant, such as Egypt or Israel, where there are many flies. You see how beautifully everything has been arranged.
Let us continue.
The next paragraph. If you noticed, I said earlier that Saint Cyril presents only certain points—a selection. There are another five or six, and his selection does not include the most central points. I mentioned this before. If we were interpreting the Divine Liturgy itself, we obviously would not dwell on these matters. Can you guess why he does? It is very simple. The catechumens before him have now been baptized, and during Bright Week he is giving them the Mystagogical Catecheses. Through this catechesis, my dear friends, what is he developing in them? Liturgical formation.
I told you earlier that we lack liturgical formation, and here Saint Cyril is providing precisely that formation: how one thing is to be done and how another is to be done. In the fourth paragraph, he introduces a new subject: “After this, the priest cries aloud.” Then, he says, the priest raises his voice.
Saint Basil the Great and John Chrysostom shaped this into a more beautiful and refined form: “Let us lift up our hearts.” “For truly, at that most awe-inspiring hour, we must lift our hearts toward God, and not keep them below, occupied with the earth and earthly things. At that hour, therefore, the priest commands everyone to lay aside the cares of daily life and the concerns of the home, and to lift the heart to Heaven, toward the God who loves mankind.” Truly, then, at that most awe-inspiring hour—and what hour is this?—there takes place...
the change of the Bread and Wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. Why is it called most awe-inspiring? In other books you will find expressions such as “the dread Mysteries” and “the dread sufferings of Christ.” The dread sufferings of Christ; the dread Mysteries. What does “dread” mean here? It means that it fills a person with holy fear and makes him tremble when he realizes that God came to earth as man, and we hung Him upon a cross.
Ah, it makes you shudder.
It is accomplished upon the altar, upon the Holy Table. What is accomplished? The change of the Bread and Wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. If someone truly grasps this, he is filled with trembling. I remember a priest of blessed memory from many years ago—I will mention his name—who served in Athens, in a small church in Marousi.
His name was Father Athanasios Hamakiotis. For a time, he was also my spiritual father, and I visited him even after I became a clergyman.
People came to him from far and wide for Holy Confession. He was not highly educated, and he was very short—so short that those who came to receive Holy Communion had to bend down, almost kneeling, for him to commune them. The little church was the Panagia Nerantziotissa in Marousi, beside the electric railway tracks. Everyone there was filled with profound katanyxis, with compunction. I was, of course, also present inside the sanctuary while he celebrated the Divine Liturgy. He would close the Holy Doors and, as he served, tears would freely stream from his eyes.
Tears upon tears. This is what it means to be conscious of what you are performing. Does not Saint Symeon the New Theologian tell us something taught by his elder, Symeon the Pious? He was called Symeon the Pious, and received that title because he truly was devout. “Do not receive Holy Communion unless at least one tear has fallen from your eyes.” And in one of the prayers shortly before we receive Holy Communion, do we not say that You see, O Lord, not only our tears, but even the smallest trace, even a fraction...
of a tear? That is to say: Lord, accept even this. This is how I approach Your dread Mysteries. So they are not “dreadful” in the ordinary negative sense, as when we say that a person is dreadful or that something is horrible. Here it means that the reality before us causes us to tremble when we understand what it truly is. That is why we speak of the dread sufferings of Christ, and why Saint Cyril calls the Mysteries—and the hour in which they are celebrated—dread and most awe-inspiring. And he says that we must lift up our hearts.
This is also the command given just before: “Let our hearts be lifted up”—that is, “Let us lift up our hearts”—and the people reply, “We lift them up unto the Lord,” and so forth. He then says that at that moment we must set aside all our worldly cares and household concerns. Someone might be thinking—a woman might say to herself—“When I get home, I must cook and receive some guests,” and so on. Let us leave all that aside, he says, “and have our hearts in Heaven, turned toward the God who loves mankind.” Let us have our hearts turned toward the God who loves mankind. Thank you.
At least at that moment. But let us speak of this a little further on. Why, at that moment, should our hearts be in Heaven, turned toward the God who loves mankind? What should they be considering? All the blessings He has bestowed upon us. Those blessings—what can I tell you? What can I possibly say? If we read the Liturgy known, as I told you, as the Liturgy of Saint Clement—though it is not actually his, as I repeat—well...
And furthermore...
Here the bishop says the prayer of the Holy Anaphora. Among its many words, he says this: “You who made water for drinking and cleansing”—You made water for us to drink and to wash ourselves. “You made life-giving air for inhaling and breathing”—You made the fresh air that we breathe. “And You granted us a voice, through the tongue striking the air.” You gave us the voice that sets the particles of the air in motion so that we may hear. For, as you know, where there is no air, there is no hearing. You surely know this. That is why we do not hear the tremendous thunderings and eruptions of the sun: beyond a certain height, there is no air...
“And You gave us hearing, which works together with the air, receiving the speech that reaches it so that we may understand. You made fire as a consolation against the darkness”—You made fire, he says, to give comfort and light, to supply what we need, “that we might be warmed” and “illumined by it.” “You separated the great sea from the land, making the one navigable by ship and the other firm beneath our feet,” and so on and so forth. It contains a great many things! When the people hear all this, they cannot help but feel how deeply indebted they are to the love of God. This is why—and I will say it, I will say it—the prayers should be spoken aloud, especially those of Saint Basil the Great, which preserve many elements of this form of the ancient Liturgy. They contain many things that, when heard by the people, instruct, guide, and teach them why the service must be as it is. Consider the great prayer of the Holy Anaphora in the Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great. What does it say?
The first part refers to the Father; the second part of the prayer refers to the Son; the third part, to the Holy Spirit; and a fourth part, to the Church and the needs of the Church. If you pay attention, you will see this. The priest addresses the Father—and Saint John Chrysostom preserves this in a very short prayer—saying: You sent Your Son, and through Your Holy Spirit You change these Gifts, which we have offered before You, into the Body of Your Christ and the Blood of Your Christ.
When these words are spoken aloud, the people hear them. Once they have been properly instructed, they begin to pay attention. Such instruction truly is necessary. Suppose we visit a museum. We cannot appreciate a work of art without the knowledge needed to understand it—and not everyone has that knowledge. When will we appreciate the work? When someone introduces it to us, when we are initiated into the art. We also take a guidebook. It contains a few details about paintings or sculptures A, B, C, and D. A person reads them, looks at the painting, takes it in, and delights in it. So it is with the Divine Liturgy. A child writes among his questions—I have not answered him yet—“Why is the Divine...
Liturgy not celebrated in modern vernacular Greek, but instead,” as he puts it, “in Katharevousa?” Essentially, it is Katharevousa, because it is not an ancient, difficult, convoluted language. In fact, it flows very smoothly. The language of the Liturgy is only somewhat more elevated than Katharevousa. My dear friends, it would be better to restore Ancient Greek to our schools than to render the Liturgy in modern vernacular Greek. And here I should give an answer—perhaps not one owed to you, but to those who say that all these texts should be translated. Did I not tell you earlier that the Liturgy is a settled matter? If we translate the Divine Liturgy, how will every single word be translated?
How will we interpret each word unless we keep before us the text as it was written and understand what the sacred author—and originally the people—meant when that particular verb or noun was placed there? If we do not, many opportunities will be given to those who wish to distort the texts and interpret them however they please.
Germans, Englishmen, and Frenchmen learn Ancient Greek—and why stop there? Even the Japanese learn Ancient Greek—in order to read the ancient Greek texts in the original. And those among them who are Christians also read Holy Scripture in the language in which it was written...
and as it was written in its own time. Why, then, should Ancient Greek not be restored? That is what is needed—not the translation of things that cannot and should not be translated. Commentaries can be provided; we can explain the sacred texts. What are we doing at this moment? Are we merely giving a lecture? We are offering commentary. Let these commentaries be given properly, and let the texts remain in their rightful place. But allow me one more minute, and then we shall continue. He says that these cares should not be present at that moment. “We must, indeed, remember God at all times.” We must always keep God in our remembrance.
But because of human frailty, this is impossible. He says that human weakness makes it impossible. We cannot keep our mind fixed; it wanders and slips away. “Yet at that particular moment, we must make a noble effort to do so.” At that moment, let us make a heartfelt effort to hold our attention steady.
Notice the expression he uses: “We must make a noble effort”—we must show spiritual earnestness. If we reflect on what is taking place and on all that we owe God for the gifts He gives us, then let us at least make the effort, at that moment, to keep our attention from wandering, so that through our attentiveness we may honor the Lord—and so that we ourselves may also...
Let us respond worthily to the good things He gives us. May the Lord bless you.

Αυτά... Αυτά, με την πάροδο του χρόνου, δεν τα χρησιμοποιούμε. Θα λέγαμε, σήμερα έχουμε έναν τρόπο, όχι βέβαια αυτή τη στιγμή, και παλιότερα, έναν τρόπο να μην έχουμε τις μύγες. Έναν τρόπο. Αλλά τώρα να τα πετάξουμε αυτά για την ιστορία;
αέρος, μορίων αέρος, από κάποιο ύψος και πέρα. «Και ακοήν συνεργουμένην υπ’ αυτού, ως επαΐειν εισδεχομένην την προσπίπτουσαν αυτή λαλίαν. Ο ποιήσας πυρ προς σκότους παραμυθίαν», συ που έκανες, λέγει, το πυρ για να δίδει παρηγορίαν, φως, προς ενδείας αναπλήρωσιν, και το «θερμαίνεσθαι ημάς», να ζεσταινόμαστε, και «φωτίζεσθαι υπ’ αυτού», και να φωτιζόμαστε. «Ο την μεγάλην θάλασσαν χωρίσας της γης, και την μεν αναδείξας πλωτήν, την δε ποσίν βάσιμον ποιήσας», κτλ., κτλ., κτλ. Έχει, έχει πάμπολλα στοιχεία! Όλα αυτά, όταν τα ακούει ο λαός, τότε δεν μπορεί παρά να αισθανθεί πόσο υπόχρεος είναι απέναντι στην αγάπη του Θεού. Γι’ αυτό και πρέπει εδώ —να το πω, να το πω, να το πω, και θα το πω— να λέγονται οι ευχές εκφώνως, και μάλιστα του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου, που διασώζουν πολλά στοιχεία από αυτόν τον τύπο της αρχαίας λειτουργίας. Πολλά στοιχεία, τα οποία, αν τα ακούει ο λαός, παιδεύεται, παιδαγωγείται και μαθαίνει γιατί θα πρέπει έτσι να είναι. Όπως η μεγάλη ευχή της Αγίας Αναφοράς στη λειτουργία του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου. Τι λέγει, παρακαλώ;
Λειτουργία, αλλά γίνεται», μάλιστα λέει, «στην καθαρεύουσα;» Ουσιαστικά είναι καθαρεύουσα, διότι δεν είναι μια γλώσσα αρχαία, δύσκολη, στριφνή. Ουσιαστικά είναι πάρα πολύ στρωμένη. Είναι λίγο πιο εντονότερη από καθαρεύουσα η γλώσσα της Λειτουργίας. Αγαπητοί μου, θα ήταν προτιμότερο να λέγαμε να ξαναβάλουμε τα αρχαία στο σχολείο μας, παρά να αποδώσουμε τη Λειτουργία στην απλοελληνική. Και εδώ να δώσω και μια απάντηση, οφειλομένη ίσως όχι σε εσάς, οφειλομένη όχι σε εσάς, σε εκείνους που λένε να μεταφραστούν όλα αυτά. Δεν σας είπα προηγουμένως ότι η Λειτουργία είναι ένα κλειστό θέμα; Αν θα μεταφράσουμε τη Θεία Λειτουργία, κάθε λέξη πώς θα μεταφραστεί;
