Summary
The fifth and final Mystagogical Catechesis calls Christians to mature through active listening, careful study, practical obedience, and teaching the faith within their families. Pietism is criticized for separating spirituality and morality from doctrine and worship, because Orthodox spiritual life must flow from Orthodox faith. The lecture contrasts authentic Eucharistic faith with worship distorted by heresy, theatricality, secular music, or other practices that obscure the sacred character of the Liturgy.

With the help of God, my dear friends, we now enter the fifth and final Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril. As this marvelous collection of his twenty-four catecheses comes to an end, I naturally feel a certain sadness. I believe that you feel you have benefited from them, as I have. The way Saint Cyril presented these teachings to his catechumens was marvelous and gave us such an opportunity for genuine catechesis—one that did not merely impart...
knowledge, but also inspired people to put into practice what he taught in his catecheses. So I feel sad that they are now ending. But what can we do? By the end, we are supposed to have become more mature. After all, this is the purpose of catechesis, which in truth never ends: it should make us more and more mature. Somewhere in the Epistle to the Hebrews, the Apostle Paul says that by this time—meaning after so much catechesis—you ought to be teachers. But because you did not take care to be properly trained and sufficiently instructed, we must begin by giving you milk as food. In other words, you are still infants in knowledge, whereas after so much catechesis you ought, as I said, to be teachers. We must therefore mature. Our listening must not be passive, but active. And active listening means not only putting what we hear into practice, but also being able, as far as possible—and I would say that all of us can do this—to pass something on to other people, even if it is only something simple. Above all, we should pass it on to the other members of our families. Those who have children, especially, should share with them what they have heard.
The practice of taking notes is unquestionably very good, because it keeps what we have heard from being forgotten, slipping away, and taking flight. A Latin proverb says, “The written word remains; spoken words fly away.” And let us not forget how the immortal writings of the Fathers reached us. Do you know how? While those Fathers were speaking, certain people served as rapid writers and stenographers—for such people have always existed—and wrote down what the speaker was saying. John Chrysostom, for example, almost...
Almost all his homilies were delivered orally; he did not sit down to write them. I say almost all. Perhaps his discourses On the Priesthood were written, and perhaps his discourse On Virginity. A very small number of his works may have been written from the beginning as treatises of a kind.
The Hexaemeron of Basil the Great is a treatise, a whole book comprising that entire series of homilies. Yet, my dear friends, he delivered his richly detailed Hexaemeron in church. He spoke every day in the late afternoon—or rather, as he himself says somewhere, in the evening, after the day’s work. At one point he tells his listeners, “Now, when you go to eat your evening meal, tell the members of your family who did not come what you heard here.” You see, then, that all these teachings were recorded by stenographers. Saint Cyril’s catecheses were recorded in the same way. They were not composed in some quiet study and then read aloud to his catechumens. No! Moreover, there was not just one stenographer, but several. That is why we often find differences between the texts, whether because one stenographer caught something differently or because of later copying—that is, through the work...
of the copyists, where, of course, certain problems also arose. This is why we need what is called a critical edition of a text. Those among you with greater knowledge understand what I mean. These teachings, then, were oral, and in truth they never come to an end. Catechesis must always continue, and the Word of God must be written down so that we may establish it firmly within ourselves, read it again, and return to it. Then we can say that, with time, we too may become teachers. We may not become official teachers. Yet I believe there are marvelous and very capable people among you, both men and women, who could teach from a lectern. I truly believe that. But even if it is only to...
say two good words to another person from what we ourselves have heard, that is still something. Saint Cyril’s fifth Mystagogical Catechesis concerns an important subject: a selection of certain points from the Divine Liturgy. But let us look at the title: “A Reading from the Catholic Epistle of Peter.” What does “a reading” mean? A reading from where? “Therefore, laying aside all malice and all deceit and slander,” and so on. These words are found in the First Epistle of the Apostle Peter, chapter two, verse one and following.
You will remember that whenever Saint Cyril took up a new catechesis, it always began with a Scripture reading. From the few words quoted here, you can see that this reading concerns moral character. Do you see what it says? We are to lay aside all malice, all deceit, and all slander—that is, speaking evil of and accusing other people. These are matters of moral conduct. Saint Cyril judges, and very rightly, that one way for us to develop Christian character is to come to know the Divine Liturgy.
This is striking, and it ought to strike us. How can the Divine Liturgy correct our moral character? It is the finest purifier and the finest shaper of character. Pay close attention to this. Because we separated the Divine Liturgy from morality, we fell into something very serious. It first appeared in Europe as a movement and a form of spirituality and, as you understand, later spread to Greece. Some people accuse others of it maliciously rather than speaking sincerely. I mean the phenomenon of Pietism. Those who understand should take note. Pietism comes from pius—as when we say Pope Pius—and pius means “pious.” Thus Pietism, a movement centered on piety, is nothing other than an attempt...
to separate spirituality from doctrine and worship. There were doctrinal struggles mainly in the East, and fewer—far fewer—in the West. Heresies appeared; of course they appeared in the West as well, and the West also had to struggle against them, but they arose above all in the East. This is why questions of doctrine occupied the Fathers of our Church so greatly. Why were they so concerned with them? Because doctrine is the source from which Orthodox spirituality springs, provided that the doctrine itself is Orthodox...
That is why the spirituality flowing from it is Orthodox as well. We cannot speak of Orthodox spirituality if we do not have Orthodox faith. This would, of course, require a lengthy demonstration, but I think that little by little we must come to understand it. It is not our subject at this moment. Indeed, we ought to have understood it throughout Saint Cyril’s catecheses. For now, I will mention just one or two points, because it is a vast subject. Some people in the West felt that there had been far too much trouble over the search for correct doctrine and related questions. Moreover, Protestantism had already begun—
Lutheranism in particular. Within Lutheranism, the idea arose that doctrines did not matter so very much after all. The ground of Protestantism favored this position, whereas the ground of Roman Catholicism did not. According to this idea, we could concern ourselves with the spiritual life—that is, with piety—without worrying too much about doctrine. Yes, God is Trinitarian; that is fundamental, fine. But what are the relations within the Holy Trinity? The Father begets and is not begotten. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, but not from the Son.
The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and is sent by the Son, and there is a clear and essential distinction between being sent and proceeding. “Leave all that aside,” they said. “It gives us a headache and creates quarrels, so we do not need it. Why trouble ourselves over it? Will God judge us according to such things? We will simply try to be good, pious Christians.” I hardly need to tell you that this position was mistaken. Thus, always within Protestant circles, there arose this movement called Pietism—a movement centered on piety—if I have managed to...
give you even a simple picture that helps us understand the matter. This, however, is disastrous, because, as I told you, Orthodox spiritual experience, or Orthodox spirituality, springs from Orthodox doctrine. We cannot therefore speak as though the spirituality put forward by Protestantism or Roman Catholicism were the same thing. Do you know how greatly Orthodox spirituality differs from Protestant spirituality? My dear friends, I have said this before in one of our Monday meetings, during these talks on Saint Cyril: if one day—and why should it not happen, unfortunately, given the sorry state of our Church administration and its leaders? Woe to us!—they come in, and they will...
come in—those who are already making their way in—and they will become destroyers of our Church. Some people are supremely optimistic. Given the sorry state we are in, we cannot maintain ordinary optimism, much less excessive optimism. When these people come in, they will establish churches, meaning church buildings. They will establish universities and schools, just as the Roman Catholics and Protestants have universities in Europe and America. And their propaganda is what it is. So I ask you: when a spirituality flowing from Protestantism or Roman Catholicism begins to take root...
what will happen then?
I am a sinful man. I do not know how faithfully I keep God’s commandments, or what God will hold against me because of my transgressions and omissions. Yet I assure you—and I have said this before—I cannot bear Protestant spirituality or Roman Catholic spirituality. I cannot bear them. To put it briefly, the element of the Cross is absent from both Roman Catholic and Protestant spirituality. Why is it absent? Because theirs is a secularized spirituality. That is why. Once the element of the Cross is absent, the presence of worldliness reveals itself.
We are sinners, but we must never cast aside Orthodox spirituality, and we will preserve it only if we preserve Orthodox faith. I do not know whether these few remarks have helped you understand, my dear friends, what Orthodox spirituality means. Do you suppose Saint Cyril of Jerusalem was foolish to include so many doctrinal teachings in his catecheses? We find matters of moral conduct only here and there. Why? Because he knows that he is providing the source, and this source will yield both moral character and much else besides.
This is the teaching of Holy Scripture. Holy Scripture says, “Do not tell lies.” The Scouts also tell their young Scouts, “Do not tell lies.” Holy Scripture says, “We must do good works.” The Scouts also say, “Do one good deed every day.” Yes, that is how it is. But now pay attention to the enormous difference—an enormous difference. The Scout’s good deed is cut off from everything else. It is independent of what his faith may be. Scouting, for example, is, we might say, a worldwide movement. It is found...
even among Hindus and everywhere else, including among atheists. They have adopted a common denominator called “God.” The Scout believes in God—but who is this God? The God of the Muslims, the God of the Buddhists, or the God of the Christians? They say it does not matter; to avoid causing offense and to preserve unity, they simply say “God” and nothing more. In whose name, then, is the good deed done? It is not done in the name of God, and still less in the name of the Holy Trinity. It is not. I remember that many years ago I was invited to visit a newly built Scout clubhouse.
Of course, they must still be rueing the day they invited me. So be it. I went there, to the top floor, and the Scout leaders gathered so that I could speak to them. At one point I voiced my objection: at least once a month, when they go on an outing on a Sunday, they miss the Divine Liturgy. I am not departing from our subject; the fifth Mystagogical Catechesis concerns the Divine Liturgy. “No,” the head leader told me—I no longer remember who he was, for this happened about twenty years ago, perhaps more. “No,” he said. “We have our own liturgy.”
“And what is your liturgy?” “When we go on an outing, when we go up into the mountains, we place a stone in the middle, gather around it, and say our prayer there.” Is there any need for me to comment? Could one possibly comment on such a thing? And you call that the Divine Liturgy? It is not even a substitute for prayer, let alone for the Divine Liturgy...
Not at all. As I told you, I made all these comments in front of all the Scout leaders. So they must still be rueing it and saying, “What a mistake we made in inviting that man!” Pay attention, my dear ones: the mere fact that they miss the Divine Liturgy once a month is very harmful. And the very fact that they have this kind of understanding of the Divine Liturgy...
...is disastrous, utterly disastrous. What kind of spirituality can come from such a thing? Absolutely none. It is merely a substitute—and a very poor caricature at that—used to justify certain things. No, then. No, no, no! For God’s sake, no! Now, as for good works: “Do not tell lies.” I do not doubt that Scouting teaches, “Do not tell lies.” “Holy Scripture says the same thing,” they will tell us. But read what follows and you will see. When Holy Scripture, when the Apostle Paul, when the Holy Spirit says, “Do not lie to one another,” He adds something: “for you are—or rather, we are—members of one another.” In other words, do not lie because we are members of one body, the Body of Christ. If my eyes lie to me, false information reaches my brain, which then gives a false command to my hands, and a schism results. If the brain receives false information because the senses are lying, I will be unable to do anything. Since the Church is one body, we cannot lie, because that would cause a schism...
...in the Body of Christ, which is the Church. But the teaching that the Church is the Body of Christ is doctrine. It is not a question of morality; it is a question of doctrine. So where does the command not to lie come from? It comes from doctrine. But when I am told, according to the Scout ethic, not to lie, where does that come from? Merely from humanism. It has no connection with God. The difference is tremendous. Morality derived from humanistic criteria may amount to something, but that something is merely an expression of culture and civility. We speak of “a civilized person.”
But it has no value before God. It comes to nothing. Once I make morality independent of God, that morality has no value. Not only does it have no value, but it is itself sin. Does the Apostle Paul not say, “Whatever is not from faith is sin”? Everything that does not spring from faith in God—from faith in God—is sin. Therefore, the morality promoted by humanism not only has no value according to God, but is also sin. I think this small example has helped you understand that...
...morality must begin with doctrine. It must begin with worship. The passage Saint Cyril chooses from the Apostle Peter says that we must put away all malice, all deceit, and all slander—matters of morality—yet his catechesis concerns the Divine Liturgy. The Divine Liturgy, therefore, is the great purifier of souls. Pay attention: it is like the great fuller, the one who dyes, whitens, and cleanses here on earth—in this case, cleansing the human person, the human soul. The Divine Liturgy is of immense importance, truly immense. What can I say? The Divine Liturgy is nothing less than the expression and epitome of the entire body of doctrine contained in our faith. If we had to condense all our doctrine into a single summary, that summary would be the Divine Liturgy. And since we have said that morality is healed by doctrine, the Divine Liturgy, as the epitome of doctrine, forms our moral life. How, then, could we ever imagine that morality can be developed outside the Church? I do not mean the Church in the doctrinal sense...
...of “the Church as the Body of Christ,” but in the sense of worship and attending the Church’s services. Such a thing is inconceivable. And what have we achieved instead? I will tell you, my dear ones. We have produced a morality cut to our own measure, entirely subjective—a subjective morality. Each person therefore has his own understanding of morality, virtue, and sin. But if our understanding is subjective, what are we doing? What becomes of the Gospel? The Gospel, my dear ones, is not one particular view of morality. It is a declaration of the will of God, a revelation of the will of God. Having said these few things as a little introduction—some introduction!—to the title, let us now continue. We read the first paragraph of the fifth Mystagogical Catechesis: “By the loving-kindness of God, in our previous gatherings you have heard sufficiently concerning Baptism, Chrismation, and partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ. It is now necessary to proceed to what follows, placing today the parapet...”
“...upon the edifice raised for our spiritual benefit.”
“By the loving-kindness of God,” he says, “in our previous gatherings”—and I remind you that these gatherings took place during Bright Week. They began on the second day of Pascha, Bright Monday. So they met on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. That is why there are five Mystagogical Catecheses: they were delivered on those five days of the week. Notice, please, that there was one catechesis every day. This was very important. It meant that the catechumens were people who worked carefully with the material given to them. Thus, “By the loving-kindness of God, in our previous gatherings you have heard sufficiently”—that is, enough—“about Baptism, the Mystery of Baptism, the Mystery of Chrismation, and the Mystery of partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ. Now we shall continue.” “It is now necessary to proceed to what follows”; we shall go further. “Placing today the parapet upon the edifice raised for our spiritual benefit.” He speaks of a building. “Upon our spiritual edifice,” he says...
“...which is for our benefit, we shall place the parapet.” Pay attention: he does not mean a wreath or a crown, but a parapet. In the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, we read: “When you build a house”—because houses in the East did not have tiled roofs, but flat rooftops—“as soon as you build it, put a parapet around the roof.” That means a railing, so that no one falls from it and is killed, and your new house does not begin with the death of a human being.
When he speaks of a building, the mind immediately turns to the parapet around the building mentioned in Deuteronomy. In other words, we must put up the railings. And what are these railings? They are what protect those inside the building, so that no one falls. The railings around the property—what we call the surrounding fence—are likewise very important, for they also protect the building.
We must now crown our edifice by placing this parapet around it; that is, we must see precisely how we can guard everything we have learned. Where will it be safeguarded? In knowing and living the Divine Liturgy. There it will be safeguarded and lived. I remember Father Athanasios Jevtić, the Serbian scholar. He was already a professor at the University of Belgrade and knew Greek extremely well. Once he said something that I heard in the presence of many others. He was speaking about the situation in Russia and...
...about the situation in Serbia. This was many years ago, before 1970—perhaps in 1968—when Tito was still alive. Yes, preaching was forbidden. Yes, in Russia and Serbia every gathering and activity outside the church building was forbidden. But the Divine Liturgy was not forbidden. Of course, for a time even the Divine Liturgy was forbidden in Russia. After 1941, however, when Stalin found himself in that difficult position and wanted to strengthen and inspire the Russian people to fight the enemy—ah, to fight the enemy! So the Church inspires people, does it?
Indeed it does! How wretched are those who believe otherwise. So Stalin opened the churches. What did he permit? Only the Divine Liturgy. And Father Athanasios Jevtić told us, “Fortunately.” Why? Because God blinded them, and they imagined that divine worship contained nothing that could threaten the systems of so-called actually existing socialism. Yet although the Divine Liturgy may appear static, it is profoundly dynamic, because it sanctifies the faithful and preserves them in the faith. You should know this.
But I will take this point further. If divine worship possesses such power—active, dynamic power, not merely potential but actual and operative—yet that worship is counterfeit and therefore unacceptable to God, then such a service cannot possibly be a source of power. It cannot. You may ask, “When can worship be counterfeit?” First of all, when it takes place within heresy. When Protestants, for example, celebrate what they call the Divine Liturgy, yet do not accept that the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ...
...but say that it is merely wine and bread in remembrance of Christ, symbols of the Body and Blood of Christ, I ask you: could such blasphemy ever be accepted or tolerated by God? It is therefore a corrupted Divine Liturgy. And I will not even speak of the other elements that mistreat the Divine Liturgy. The Orthodox Divine Liturgy unquestionably possesses an integrity and wholeness. We shall see this later—not in Saint Cyril, but in Saint Nicholas Cabasilas. I shall read you something from his work. Yet the Divine Liturgy may remain intact in essence while being presented in a distorted form, so to speak.
Suppose we introduce music—and what kind of music? Not merely a choir, but even rock music, supposedly to attract young people. Poor, misguided people! If a young person wants to hear rock music, can he not go somewhere else to hear it? Must he come to church to hear rock, supposedly so that we can attract him? And it is performed onstage, because we have turned the sanctuary into a stage. You have probably seen photographs published from time to time in newspapers and magazines, showing services among Protestants and, no less, among Roman Catholics, with whom we have the unfortunate desire to unite. God preserve us!
God preserve us! And you see—their churches have no iconostasis. That in itself is not of great importance, because the ancient Church did not have an iconostasis either, but the sanctuary is left open. Do not accuse me for saying this; pay attention, I am speaking historically. With the sanctuary exposed, the musicians are lined up on a step below it, though still above the congregation, playing electric guitars, violins, and so forth. And when they play rock music there, are we not mistreating the Divine Liturgy? Where is the Church’s sacred music, the music that is fitting and reverent? This is already happening in Athens, at Saint Photini in Nea Smyrni. I am speaking of concrete facts.
There is a choir, instrumental music, and violins. Is that not a distortion? I would not want to claim that the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist would not be present, provided, of course, that there are valid Holy Orders and all the rest. But is this not a distortion? Is not good food served on a good plate? We are offering Holy Communion. Of course, even if we offered it in a mortar, it would still be Holy Communion—but what a way to offer it! Likewise, when we offer divine worship surrounded by such elements, its fitting form is ruined. Did the Fathers not establish in the Canons that in the Divine Liturgy there must be no...
Theatricality—thymelismos, spelled theta-upsilon. The thymelē is the theater. There must be nothing theatrical about the Divine Liturgy, nor anything that even calls the theater to mind. So when we stage a performance like this, are we not distorting Divine worship? And are we not also showing contempt for the Canons of our Church concerning Divine worship? Of course we are! And there are still other things, my dear friends, that go so far as to distort Divine worship.
I say it again.
I say it again: the Body and Blood of Christ may indeed be offered, but this setting, this distorted form, ought not to exist. So pay attention. Yesterday—today! What am I saying, yesterday? Today it is happening at Saint Photini in Nea Smyrni, Athens—not here. But why not tomorrow at Saint Demetrios in Nea Smyrni, Larissa, or at Saint Achillios, or somewhere else? How, then, will the congregation respond to this? It will certainly be divided. There will be those who understand absolutely nothing of the depth of Divine worship and will say, “These things are lovely. Do you not like them?” Others will say, “No. If we want to hear music, we can get records of classical music,
or rock music if someone is fond of rock, and whatever else we may want. But in worship I want to hear the established music, the music that has been sanctified.” Will the congregation not then be divided? And tell me: is such division wrong when people are divided over things that are distorted? God willing, after the feast days—we did not manage to reach it—we will read in Acts that the people were divided: some sided with the Apostles and others with the Jews. Someone might say, “And they had to be divided.” There was no other possibility. For if they had not been divided, either the whole city would have followed the Apostles or the whole city would have accepted the Jews. Then the Gospel would have come to nothing. What do you think of this? Is it true?
So, I have told you a few things: worship must be sound and kept in its proper form. We must not introduce innovations that could prove harmful to the spirit of the worship of God. And now, since Saint Cyril has given us these words by way of a brief introduction, allow me to offer a brief introduction of my own.
In this introduction, then, let us finally see what the Divine Liturgy is. I must tell you that Saint Cyril could never have covered everything concerning the Divine Liturgy in a single catechesis. That would be impossible. He takes only a few points in passing—pay attention, only in passing. Of course, he chooses points that also foster the Christian moral life, but they are only selected points. Throughout this catechesis he will also give us a very brief account and explanation of the Our Father, the Lord’s Prayer.
Then again, his catecheses are based on the Creed—“I believe in one God”—and now he also takes up the Our Father and explains it, however briefly, to give us a measure of doctrine, faith, and the moral life. What, then, is my brief introduction? Saint Cyril does not explain what the Divine Liturgy is. That does not matter. Since we are giving a lesson, as we said, let us use this opportunity, now that we are studying Saint Cyril, to draw upon other Fathers and ecclesiastical writers of our Church, so that we may gain a more complete picture of the Divine Liturgy. Many of you may remember, from quite some time ago, that
some years ago we studied the Divine Liturgy on the basis of the outstanding work by Saint Nicholas Cabasilas, the theologian of Thessalonica, devoted to the Divine Liturgy. The title of the book is The Divine Liturgy. It is one of the finest works ever written on the Divine Liturgy. Saint Maximus the Confessor also wrote about it, but he treated only certain points rather than the whole Divine Liturgy, just as Saint Cyril does here. Saint Nicholas Cabasilas, however, presents everything in order.
You will remember the study we made at that time. Let us see how he begins. Like a master of words and a good teacher—as Saint Cyril also was—what does he do? In fact, in his introductory catechesis Saint Cyril gave an outline of what he would say in the catecheses that followed. Here too, Saint Cabasilas gives us a very concise outline. The title is: “The Meaning of the Whole Sacred Rite, in Summary.” The word nous here means “meaning.”
It is the meaning of the sacred rite—that is, of the Divine Liturgy—given in summary, in just a few words. This is very important, so that a person does not become overwhelmed, learning many, many things, only to find at the end that, when asked what the Divine Liturgy is, he cannot say anything because he has drowned in all the details. So here, in concise form, is what Saint Cabasilas tells us: “The work of the sacred celebration of the Holy Mysteries is the transformation of the Gifts into the Divine Body and Blood; its purpose is for the faithful to be sanctified through them, having received
forgiveness of sins, the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven, and the like.” This edition I have also includes a translation. When we made that earlier study, we did not have these books, these editions from Thessalonica, or this translation. I had a volume from Sources Chrétiennes—Christian Sources.
Just imagine: the French publish these works with the original Greek text on one side and the French translation on the other. Think also of Migne’s editions: the Greek text is on one side and the Latin translation on the other.
Just think! Foreign scholars take our treasures, annotate them, and produce critical editions. We thank them—it is the work of a lifetime. And we... My dear friends, read the Fathers. Glory to God, many translations have begun to appear, including better translations of many patristic works. Let me now read the translation printed beside the text. Who prepared it? Here is the rendering: “The work of the celebration of the Holy Mysteries is the transformation of the Gifts into the Divine Body and Blood; its purpose is for the faithful to be sanctified, having received through these Gifts forgiveness of sins and the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven
and the like.” What is the Divine Liturgy? It has two elements: work and purpose. What is the work? The very name tells us: leitourgia, a public work. Leitos—spelled epsilon-iota, with a circumflex—means “public.” That is why we use the word leitourgēma, meaning a public function. Of course, saying “public leitourgēma” is redundant, because, if we translated it, we would be saying “public work.” It is redundant, but the expression is now established, so we use it. Now,
this leitourgēma, this work, has as its purpose the transformation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. What, then, is this work—a public work because the faithful, the people, are present? What is it? It is the transformation of the Gifts—the wine and bread—into the Body and Blood of Christ. That is the first element. The second is the purpose. The purpose is for the faithful to become partakers of what God has accomplished within the Divine Liturgy. What does this communion mean here, and what will the faithful attain? They will be sanctified through the Gifts.
The Gifts are now the Body and Blood of Christ. Through them the faithful attain forgiveness of sins: “Take, eat; this is My Body; this is My Blood, for the forgiveness of sins,” and they receive the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven and the like. What are these things? The forgiveness of sins and the inheritance of the Kingdom of God. What, then, is the Divine Liturgy? Its whole meaning, in summary and in a nutshell, is work and purpose. The work is the transformation. I say it again because, as we have said, this is a lesson: the work is the transformation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. The purpose is the sanctification of the faithful. Therefore, if we do not receive Holy Communion at the Liturgy, the work is accomplished, but the purpose is not fulfilled.
But you will say to me, “You do not let us receive Holy Communion. I came to Confession, for example, and you did not let me receive.” Yes, because you were not properly prepared for Holy Communion. That is why, from our earliest years, we must never allow ourselves to become unfit to receive. Suppose you see a child teetering on the brink of falling into sexual immorality. You tell him, “My child, do you realize that you will not be able to receive Holy Communion?” Of course, the child will weigh those words. But this gives me something very serious, a powerful argument, to tell him: “You cannot receive Holy Communion!”
My dear friends, how important these things are! Saint Cabasilas continues: “The preparation for and contribution to that work and purpose consist of prayers, psalmody, readings from Holy Scripture, and, in short, everything done and said in a sacred manner before and after the sanctification of the Gifts.” Preparation means preparation. I will read the translation directly: “Preparation and contribution—syntelia, that is, contribution—toward that work and that purpose.”
Preparation: it prepares us to arrive there, to arrive at the work and the purpose. What constitutes this preparation? The prayers, the psalmody, the readings from Holy Scripture, and in general everything done and said in a sacred manner before and after the sanctification of the Gifts. What, then, does everything else constitute? A framework.
A framework, a preparation. The setting and the manner prepare us. And the setting itself—do you know what that is? It is the church building, the wall paintings, the icons, and the oil lamps. All of this is the Liturgy in space. That is what I mean!
Where shall we begin? “Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This is the Liturgy in time. How beautiful it all is, how harmoniously it is woven together, if only one can understand it and live it. It is magnificent. Everything, then, belongs to the Divine Liturgy: space and time. So there must be preparation. Many people say, “Why do we need magnificent churches? Why do we need frescoes? They are constantly asking us for money to adorn the church with icons.” My dear friends, this is the sacred space. It prepares us and puts us in the proper frame of mind. Is it the same to enter a stable or a warehouse as it is to enter a church without frescoes,
or a church adorned with frescoes, where there is order and beauty? Is it the same? As you can see, then, these things are important. But now, my dear friends, the hourglass—the relentless hourglass—has told us that we must finish. My dear friends, God willing, we shall return on January 14, 1991. Nineteen ninety-one. I wish you... The thirteenth is Sunday, so the fourteenth—the fourteenth is Monday. The fourteenth is a Monday, just as today is.

έχει ειπωθεί αυτό, και για την πραγματικότητα τη σερβική. Ζούσε τότε ο Τίτο. Ότι ναι, το κήρυγμα απαγορεύεται. Ναι, απαγορεύεται στη Ρωσία και στη Σερβία κάθε εκδήλωσις και πράξις έξω της Εκκλησίας. Αλλά δεν απηγορεύθη η Θεία Λειτουργία. Βέβαια, κάποιον καιρό απηγορεύετο και η Λειτουργία στη Ρωσία. Μετά όμως από το 1941, που ο Στάλιν βρέθηκε στη δύσκολη εκείνη θέση, για να ενισχύσει, να ενθουσιάσει τον ρωσικό λαό να πολεμήσουν εναντίον του εχθρού... Α, να πολεμήσουν εναντίον του εχθρού. Α, δηλαδή εμπνέει η Εκκλησία, ε;
κάποιες ροκ μουσικής, αν κανείς είναι ροκόφιλος, και δεν ξέρω τι και δεν ξέρω τι. Αλλά εγώ θέλω να ακούσω στη λατρεία μου την καθιερωμένη μουσική, εκείνη που είναι αγιασμένη». Και τότε δεν θα διχαστεί το πλήθος; Και πέστε μου, αυτός ο διχασμός είναι κακός, όταν διχάζεται το πλήθος για πράγματα που είναι στραβά; Θα διαβάσουμε, πρώτα ο Θεός, μετά τις γιορτές —γιατί δεν φτάσαμε— στις Πράξεις, που λέγει ότι εδιχάσθη το πλήθος. Και οι μεν ήσαν με τους Αποστόλους, οι δε με τους Ιουδαίους. Θα λέγε κάποιος: «Και θα έπρεπε να διχαστεί». Δεν γινόταν αλλιώτικα να διχαστεί. Διότι, αν δεν εδιχάζετο, τότε θα πρέπει ή όλη η πόλις να είχε ακολουθήσει τους Αποστόλους ή όλη η πόλις να είχε δεχθεί τους Ιουδαίους. Και τότε το Ευαγγέλιο θα έπεφτε εις το κενό. Πώς σας φαίνονται αυτά; Είναι αλήθεια;
