Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the Eucharistic bread and wine are truly Christ’s Body and Blood, known through faith rather than sensory perception. The lecturer warns against both irreverence and unbelief in approaching Communion, emphasizing the communicant’s confession that these gifts are Christ’s own Body and Blood. David’s excellent wine and Solomon’s joyful bread, wine, oil, and white garments are read as prophetic images of the Eucharist, Chrismation, Baptismal purity, and life transformed by grace.

Beloved, we are now in the Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. In this fourth mystagogical catechesis, he speaks about the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. We have already examined several points, and we are now approaching the end of this catechesis, which is certainly brief, but exceptionally important and significant.

We have already examined the sixth paragraph, and now, of course, we move on to the seventh.

Thank you. Last time we had gone on, and there was not enough time to deal properly with the sixth paragraph, which concerns an extremely important point. So allow me to repeat it. He says: “Do not regard them as mere”—with a short omega and an iota with a circumflex—“bread and wine.” Therefore, do not fix your attention, so to speak, on the bread and wine as though they were bare, ordinary things, merely wine and bread. “For they are Body and Blood.”

“According to the Lord’s declaration.” For he says that they are the Body of Christ and the Blood of Christ according to the Lord’s word—that is what “declaration” means here. “For even if your senses suggest this to you”—even if your senses of taste and sight tell you what they perceive. My taste tells me that this is wine and bread. “Nevertheless, let faith assure you.” Let faith be what gives you certainty.

Do not judge the matter by taste, he says, but learn from faith, without any doubt, that you have been counted worthy to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. And so, my beloved, we see here an extremely important and very relevant point. I have heard of people trying to convince themselves—and trying to do so on the level of sensory perception.

“There, there—now, on my tongue, this is, how shall I put it, flesh and blood.” There is no reason to do this. For God’s sake, there is no reason at all. Some people even close their eyes. Quite apart from anything else, a person risks hurting himself when he closes his eyes.

You may tell me that someone who closes his eyes is not trying to suggest to himself through his senses that this is the Body and Blood of Christ, but simply wants a deeper sense that he is receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. Whatever the case may be, it is not good. It is dangerous, and not merely because someone might be physically hurt.

The reason is that you are trying to deceive yourself into sensing that it truly is the Body and Blood of Christ, as though your senses themselves could tell you so. But if your senses tell you this, then where is your faith? Faith then disappears. Suppose I were eating an onion and it became flesh in my mouth, so that I no longer perceived it as onion but as flesh. I would understand that it had changed. But when I am told that it truly is flesh even though I perceive it as onion, that is where faith enters. For if, on my tongue, it were changed...

...into the sensory experience of flesh, then I ask once again: where is faith? But I will give you another argument: this is a Mystery. In Baptism, where do you see our adoption as sons? In Chrismation, where do you see the seal of the Holy Spirit? These are Mysteries; that is, they have an invisible dimension. I repeat, there is an invisible dimension. Do not try to transfer what is invisible into the realm of your senses. That is not good, because without realizing it, you are in a sense doing away with faith. But I will give you an argument that I believe is extremely powerful.

I mentioned it last time, though only briefly. When the Son of God became man, did He come with noise and commotion? He once said to the Pharisees: “What do you think? Does the Kingdom of God come with outward observation?” No. It comes silently, without noise, without any great sound, without outward display. The Kingdom of God comes, and “the Kingdom of God is within us.” Indeed, in the Old Testament we have two miracles—or rather, one miracle with two aspects—which clearly foreshadow the Incarnation.

Gideon asked: “How shall I be convinced, Lord, that we will defeat our enemies? Show me a sign. Lord, if I place some wool, a fleece of sheep’s wool, outside overnight, and there is no moisture anywhere else, but the moisture settles on the wool, then I will be convinced. I set this as a sign. And then let the opposite happen: if moisture falls the following night and I place the wool outside again, let the moisture fall everywhere except upon the fleece.” The “fleece” means the wool, the sheep’s wool.

And so it happened. On the first night, the moisture was only on the fleece and not on the ground around it. On the second night, there was no moisture on the fleece, but there was moisture all around it. But how did the moisture descend—once upon the surrounding ground and once upon the fleece? The Most Holy Theotokos is the fleece, and the moisture is God the Word. What noise was made? None at all. When the Incarnation took place, there was no noise. There was no outward display. The Magi who came to worship Him—they...

...saw something beyond the infant before them. The nature of their gifts is remarkable. We interpret their meaning, of course, but that meaning is truly present. When they offered gold, gold was offered to a king. When they offered myrrh, it was offered for the burial of the dead. And when frankincense was offered, it was used only in the worship of God. It was as though they were saying: He is God who became man, who will die—hence the myrrh—and who is also King. The Magi discerned certain truths.

The rulers of Israel, although they were the guardians and custodians of the prophecies, discerned nothing. Herod the Idumean—not a Jew, but an Idumean, meaning that he came from the line of Esau—asked: “Where is Christ to be born?” He asked the learned men, and they answered: “In Bethlehem of Judea.” Did they go to see Him? No. And so Christ passed among them: He was conceived, He was born, and His life passed as quietly as moisture settling upon the fleece. There was nothing perceptible, nothing perceptible at all. What did they see? A man.

He went to Nazareth and preached. They became angry when He told them that Elijah had gone to a widow who was not a Jew. “Why? What are we, then?” Do you see this chauvinism of the Jews? They seized Him, pushed Him along, and were going to throw Him down from a cliff, from a rocky height in their region. You know, it is astonishing that someone could seize God incarnate and throw Him from a cliff. Yet it is still more astonishing that someone could seize this same God and crucify Him. There lies the stumbling block. Can this truly be God?

Could this be the Lord Yahweh, the Lord of Israel who spoke on Sinai? Is it possible?

Herod, who happened to be in Jerusalem during those days, greatly desired to meet Jesus because he had heard about His many miracles. They brought Jesus to him as a prisoner, for Pilate had sent Him, and Herod said to Him: “Come now, perform some miracle for me, since You are supposed to be the great wonder-worker.”

People perform feats of trickery in the marketplaces. But the Lord remained silent and worked no miracle. Then Herod mockingly dressed Him in a royal robe and sent Him back to Pilate. Nothing astonishing, nothing astonishing at all. The rulers...

...saw nothing more than a man whom they could seize. They had Him in their hands and could hang Him upon the Cross. But what did the disciples see in the person of Jesus? At that time, could they speak of “the Son of God”? Not merely “a son of God,” as the centurion said, “Truly, this man was a son of God,” but with the definite article: “the Son of God.” Yet ask them what they understood. The Apostle Peter said, “You are the Son of the living God,” and the Lord told him, “No man revealed this to you, but My Father.” Ask the Apostle Peter what he understood by the words he had spoken. He understood nothing. After all, the Lord Himself said...

“...My Father revealed it to you. You still understand nothing.” Pentecost came, and only then—then—did they understand who Jesus was. Origen expresses this in a concise saying: “They...” Forgive me: “Many saw Jesus—including Caiaphas, Annas, Pilate, and Herod—but only those who believed saw the Word.” Who is the Word? He is the divine nature. Christ appeared as an ordinary man whom they could seize...

...seize Him, hang Him, and crucify Him; yet He is none other than God in the utmost depth of His humility. So it is here as well: you see nothing but wine and bread, yet it is God the Word, who became man. I do not think there could be a better argument for accepting the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. As Origen says: “Many saw Jesus, but only those who believed saw the Word.” And do not be scandalized if you are told, “Look, the priest dropped Holy Communion on the floor.” Yes, that is a grave sin.

An even graver sin would be to leave Holy Communion where mice could eat it. It must be guarded carefully. But see what kind of Body of Christ this is: it is as Jesus was when they crucified Him upon the Cross. I believe this is the strongest argument. We also have other testimonies, which God sometimes adds, solely as He judges necessary, when there is unbelief. Saint Symeon of Thessalonica speaks of this—not Saint Symeon the Theologian, but Saint Symeon of Thessalonica. In his collected works he says: “If the priest notices...”

“...at some point, before giving Holy Communion to the people, that in the Holy Chalice there is actual—that is, perceptible—blood and flesh—for it is truly Blood and Flesh already, but I mean now perceptible to the senses, as though there were pieces of flesh—take heed: God has permitted this, perhaps because of some unbelief. It may be your own unbelief, or that of the people. Take heed: you must not give anyone Holy Communion from that Holy Chalice.” Do you see? Even though flesh and blood are now perceptible to the senses, you must not give the faithful Holy Communion...

...from it. Instead, you are to use the reserved Holy Bread from Great and Holy Thursday, which we keep in the holy artophorion and use to give Holy Communion to the sick. You will take from there and give Holy Communion to the people. Then you must pray fervently for what is in the Chalice to return to its former appearance. To what appearance? To what your senses of taste would perceive as wine and bread.

There is more. There have also been cases of people receiving Holy Communion unworthily, and this unworthiness consists chiefly in unbelief—that is, in thinking that what you receive is nothing more than wine and bread. This is why some mothers, in fact...

Grandmothers will say to their grandchildren, to the little children they bring for Holy Communion, “The priest will give you a little wine and a little bread.” My dear ones, never say this: “a little wine and a little bread.” It is not good. At the very least it is an improper way of speaking; I call it improper so as not to call it unbelief. But when it truly is unbelief, God certainly does not punish everyone. Yet some are punished: a person may die immediately after receiving Holy Communion. Does not the Apostle Paul say, “For this reason many die,” because they do not discern that it is the Body and Blood of the Lord? A person may even fall under demonic possession: he receives Holy Communion, takes two steps, falls to the ground, and begins to convulse horribly.

Such signs may appear from time to time to show the faithful what the Mystery is, because unbelief has begun to arise among them. Know this: whenever a miracle occurs in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, like those I have described, it happens only by God’s permission because unbelief is present. Where there is faith, such phenomena never appear. I wanted, then, to emphasize this in a little more detail, so that we may understand and not wonder, “What can this be?” or fall into unbelief.

When the deacon says, “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near,” the word “faith” refers precisely to this. And when we prepare to receive Holy Communion, as you know, we read the Office in Preparation for the Receiving of the Holy Gifts. We say part of it shortly before receiving Holy Communion. In monasteries it is also said aloud. Sometimes it may be said in parishes as well, especially in a small parish. At one point we say, in effect, “This is the faith with which I draw near to receive Holy Communion,” and so forth. “And I believe also that this is truly Thine own most pure Body, and that this is truly Thine own precious Blood.” The phrase “this is truly” means precisely “this very thing.”

What I am about to receive is Your Body and Your Blood. On what basis? This is what I believe. At the very last moment, faith is renewed. This is a great thing, a very great thing. And one more point. Do you remember, perhaps two or three years ago—I do not recall exactly—when a member of parliament raised the issue in Parliament, claiming that the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist was a source of germs and cross-infection? You may remember that Father Ignatios then gave you an hour-long talk, and I gave you two hour-long talks, because I took the opportunity to explain certain things about what the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist truly is.

It was an opportunity for a better and deeper understanding. But, my dear ones, let us not imagine that the Holy Chalice is a source of germs. Some receive Holy Communion but do not want their lips to touch the communion spoon. This is not good; it is not good. They try to grasp the spoon with their teeth simply to avoid touching it with their lips, perhaps because they fear becoming ill or feel disgust—I hardly know what to say. It is a sin; let us be very careful about this. Besides, this manner of receiving can also cause an accident. And now we proceed to the seventh paragraph: “Let blessed David also strengthen you.”

He says, “Thou hast prepared a table before me in the presence of those who afflict me.” This is said in Psalm 22. David says, “Thou hast prepared before me”—before my very eyes. Who prepared it? You, O God. You prepared a table before me, “in the presence of those who afflict me,” opposite those who oppress and trouble me. “What he means by this is the following: Before Your coming...”

“...the demons prepared a table for men, defiled and polluted and filled with diabolical power. But after Your coming, O Master, You prepared a table before me.” Let me put this somewhat in my own words. Before You came, my Lord, the demons prepared for me a defiled table. “Defiled” means polluted and filthy, as when a sacrifice is polluted...

...by being offered to idols. The demons, then, offered me such a filthy table. But when You came, You prepared a good table for me. David speaks of this prophetically. It was yet to come, and this table is the Body and Blood of Christ. He set this table before those who afflict me. And who are those who afflict me? The demons. To put it in the simple way children do: “Let the demons burst with rage!” So there, when...

I have Christ’s table, with His Body and His Blood. “Thou hast prepared a table before me.” When a man says to God, “Thou hast prepared a table before me,” what else can it mean? “It means the mystical and noetic table that God prepared for us over against”—that is, in opposition to—“the table of the demons.” What else could this mean but that God comes to prepare a good table for us? It is exactly what I explained to you before.

“Most fittingly,” and quite naturally, “for the former table offered communion with demons, while this one offers communion with God.” As blessed Paul says somewhere to the Corinthians: since the table of Christ has been set before you, so that you may receive the Body and Blood of Christ, why do you partake of the table of demons? How can Christ and Belial be joined together? How can they possibly be reconciled? Do you know how this came about? Although the Corinthians had become Christians, they had not forgotten their former customs. You may say that they were new Christians and had not yet been able to go very deeply into the faith.

They might be invited to an idolatrous sacrifice. As is well known, the sacrificial victims—the meat that had been offered—were sold in the meat markets and butcher shops, but they were also served at banquets to be eaten. So someone who offered a sacrifice would slaughter an ox, sacrifice it, and so forth, and then invite his friends to a meal. That table was a table of demons. And now the Apostle Paul says: “How can this be? You have come to the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist and received Holy Communion, and afterward you go to the table of demons?”

“Most fittingly,” then, and quite naturally, “for the former table offered communion with demons”—communion with demons—“while this one offers communion with God.” Yes, because you cannot partake both of the table of sacrifices offered to demons and of the table of the Lord. But take heed: there is yet another table that belongs to the demons. It is the spiritualist séance table. It is also the table around which séances are held by the mediums familiar to us, where spirits are summoned—and the spirits that answer the summons are none other than...

...demonic spirits. They are certainly not the spirits of those who have fallen asleep, of people who have died. Therefore, brethren, if someone goes to spiritualism and consults mediums to ask about something he wishes to know, let him understand this: he is sitting at the table of demons. You cannot receive Holy Communion and then sit at such a table. And wherever there is—if you will allow me to speak more broadly—some form of religious initiation, or an initiation with a religious character, there is a table of demons.

This ranges from the Orphic mysteries to the mysteries of Demeter, the well-known Eleusinian Mysteries, which the wretched Freemasons make use of—the wretched Freemasons, those wretched pagan Freemasons—and extends even to the mysteries of Isis.

The Freemasons sit at such tables, and they do so many times during the year in their lodge. One foreign writer relates that there, in the dim light of the lodge, at that table—and, as you know, they offer wine and bread—there is a substitute for the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, to which they assign other interpretations, meanings, and teachings.

He says, “I felt a shudder within me, something probing me; and because I was experienced, I understood: it was the spirit of the Great Goddess Isis.” Horrifying, horrifying, horrifying! That is why you cannot be both a Freemason and a Christian. Do you understand now? You cannot. That is why it is a calamity for someone to have gone so far as to enter that dark den called Freemasonry. And that is not all. Today, when we have so many Eastern religions, when we have...

An initiation ceremony—for example, when someone is initiated not through words or simple instruction, but through a rite of initiation into one of these Eastern religions—is likewise a table of demons. Let us continue. “You have anointed my head with oil,” the same Psalm goes on to say. “You have anointed my head,” it says.

My head with fragrant oil. In those days, people would put fragrant oils on their heads, rather like the hair tonic familiar to us. When the Lord says, “Anoint your head and wash your face,” what are you to anoint your head with? With this fragrant oil, so that you may be cheerful and not appear to be fasting. Does not the Lord say this? The words “anoint your head” referred to fragrant oil that made the hair shine and the head smell pleasant. What would we call it today? Hair tonic. That is what it was. Do you understand? And so: “He anointed your head with oil upon your forehead, through the seal which you have from God.”

“That you may become the impression of the seal, consecrated to God,” Saint Cyril of Jerusalem comments. He says: “He anointed your head with oil upon the forehead, with the seal which you have from God, so that you may become the impression of the seal, consecrated to God.” This expression, “consecrated to God,” is used in the Book of Exodus, and it means something dedicated to the Lord. This impression of the seal is given to us by the Spirit of God through the Mystery of Chrismation, of which we have already spoken...

It is nothing other than the indelible seal of God. This seal is never erased. It may be covered over if a person receives some other seal—for example, the seal of 666—but the seal of God remains indelible; it simply becomes inactive. And you should know that all of us have been sealed with this seal. We spoke about this in our catechesis on Chrismation. Let us never allow the seal of the Antichrist to be placed on our forehead or on our hand.

They are already moving forward and engraving things. And now they are beginning with identity cards.

From the standpoint of the seal itself, this is not of great importance. As I often tell people, the five-thousand-drachma note bears the number 666. Have you ever thought of throwing it out of your pocket? You use it in your transactions. Yet it is significant. Where does its significance lie? In the fact that the whole process is advancing step by step, through what is called the salami-slicing method.

Little by little. Do you know what the salami-slicing method means? It is a modern expression. You take a salami and cut off one thin slice, then another thin slice, and then another, so that no one notices that it is gradually being cut away, little by little.

A little at a time. One step at a time. I repeat: however many papers may have 666 printed on them, or banknotes bearing it, or cassette tapes, my dear friends—no, this one does not have it; it is rather old—cassette tapes bear that code, 666. But from there they will proceed to people’s foreheads; I am telling you this so that you may know. Someone who understands could possess such an identity card, yet still be ready to say “no” when the time comes for the forehead. But most people do not understand. That is where the danger lies. This is why such identity cards should not be introduced. They should not be introduced because most people do not understand, and one day they will say, “But you know, identity cards can be lost or forged.”

Then comes a new method. We will no longer write it on a piece of paper or on some plastic card pressed and manufactured in whatever way. We will put it on people’s foreheads. And people—step by step, as we have said—will say, “What difference does it make whether it is on paper or on the forehead?” Those who are ignorant, or those who lack strength, will say this. Those who have been forewarned have nothing to fear, nothing to fear. I would rather lose my pension a thousand times over, and lose every privilege I might receive by showing my identity card, than be sealed on the forehead. Pay close attention to this! May God preserve us!

May that hour not come, though it seems very near. Now then, “And Your cup makes me drunk as with the finest wine,” the Psalmist says, again in Psalm 22. “Your cup,” he says, “makes me drunk”—“makes me drunk as with the finest”—because it contains the finest wine: excellent wine, good wine, very good wine, and it makes me drunk. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem now says, “Do you see that a cup is spoken of here?”

“Jesus took the cup into His hands, gave thanks, and said: ‘This is My blood, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’” Do you see? David said, “Your cup, with its finest wine, makes me drunk.”

And what does Christ now say? He took the cup, gave thanks, and said, “This is My blood.” What, then, was David speaking about? And what is this finest wine? The finest wine is the blood of Christ. For this reason Solomon also, alluding to this grace...

Says in Ecclesiastes, “Come, eat your bread with gladness.” What does Ecclesiastes—the book traditionally said to have been written by Solomon—say? “Come,” that is, draw near; “eat your bread with gladness,” with joy. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says that this is the spiritual bread. “Come”: this is the saving and blessed invitation, the call that makes a person saved and blessed. “And drink your wine with a good heart,” Ecclesiastes continues.

Drink it with your heart—or rather, within your heart. Drink wine with a good heart. What wine? The spiritual wine, says Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. Ecclesiastes also says, “And let oil be poured upon your head.” Let oil be poured over your head. Do you see how this also alludes mystically to Chrismation through the oil? “And let your garments always be white,” Ecclesiastes says, “for the Lord has already shown favor toward your works.”

Let your clothes, your garments, always be white, because the Lord has shown His favor toward your deeds, toward your works. What I am telling you, my dear friends, is found...

In Ecclesiastes, chapter 9, verse 7.

Now, has the Lord not shown favor toward your works? The Lord is now showing His favor toward your deeds. “For before you drew near to grace, your works were vanity of vanities.” This is a very beautiful point. Ecclesiastes says that the Lord blesses your works. Yet this is the very book that, after mentioning one thing and another—even some great good—adds, “Vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” Yes, all your works were vanity. But from the moment the Lord sets before you...

The spiritual table, from that moment your works are no longer vanity. And so, my dear friends, whatever works we perform in Christ Jesus and in the Holy Spirit remain unto ages of ages. Our works are no longer vain—not even the giving of a cup of water, provided it is given in the name of Christ. Not even a cup of water! How remarkable this is, if you reflect upon it. Perhaps we ought sometimes to read the Song—pardon me, Ecclesiastes. It calls even scholarship and extensive study “vanity of vanities.” When someone grows very old, he says, “What came of all that I read and accomplished?” It is not easy to say this; one must reach maturity. Then a person will say, “Yes, I wearied myself, raised children, built houses, conducted business, became a scholar—and what came of it?” Then he speaks to himself and says, “Vanity of vanities.” And when he lies in bed in pain, as his life draws to its end, he will repeat once more: “Vanity of vanities.” Nothing comes of it. But when these works bear the seal of Christ, the Lord looks upon them with favor, and they are no longer vanity of vanities. Ecclesiastes says something else as well: “And let your garments always be white.”

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem now says: “Having put off the old garments and put on those that are spiritually white, you must remain clothed in white forever. We do not mean that you must always wear white clothing, but that you must be clothed in garments that are truly white, radiant, and spiritual.”

Or, in the words of the blessed Isaiah: “Let my soul rejoice in the Lord, for He has clothed me with the garment of salvation and wrapped me in the tunic of gladness.” In other words, he now says: Take off your old garments. You remember, he told us this in the First Mystagogical Catechesis: we take off our old garments in order to put on the new. That is why, at Baptism, we put on a white tunic. And he says that you must clothe yourself in garments that are spiritually white. Indeed, you must always be clothed in white. A person dressed in white is called white-robed. So, he says, you must always wear white garments. Saint Cyril does not mean that we must literally wear white clothes all the time, but that we must do so in the spiritual sense. As Isaiah says: “Let my soul rejoice”—let my soul be glad—“in the Lord, for He has clothed me with the garment of salvation.”

What is this garment of salvation? It is the clothing of salvation. “And He has wrapped me in the tunic of gladness.” So we see, my beloved, that we must always remain spiritually clothed in white. That white tunic which we received at Baptism—let us never stain it, never defile it. And how is it defiled? Through sins. Of course, I hardly need remind you of the love of God, for we have said this before: just as white clothes become soiled and we send them to be washed or dry-cleaned, so too the white tunic, though it ought never to have been stained, may become soiled through carelessness.

And what do we do then? We send this tunic to be cleansed. What does that mean? It means that we go to the second washing, to the Mystery of Holy Confession and metanoia—repentance. That is the place of cleansing, my beloved, to which a person truly must have recourse. Saint Cyril says: “Having learned these things and become fully assured that the bread which appears before you is not bread...” You, the catechumen, having learned these things and been fully assured of them, must know “that the bread which appears to be bread is not bread.”

“Even though it tastes like bread.” He repeats this in the ninth and final paragraph, as he brings the subject to a close. It is not ordinary bread, he says, “even though it tastes like bread,” but the Body of Christ. “And the wine which appears before you is not wine.” The wine that appears to be wine is not wine, “even though the taste suggests that it is.” Do you see how strongly he insists upon this? It is the Blood of Christ. “And concerning this, David said long ago in the Psalms: ‘Bread strengthens the heart of man, and oil makes his face glad.’” This, he says, is what David spoke concerning the Blood of Christ and the Body of Christ.

“Bread strengthens the heart of man, and oil makes his face glad.” What bread is it, in truth, that comes to strengthen the human heart?

We say: “Our Father, who art in heaven, give us this day our daily bread...”

My beloved, all the Fathers of our Church who interpret the Our Father—the Lord’s Prayer, which Saint Cyril will also explain for us, though very briefly, in the next catechesis—

where he will speak to us about a few aspects of the Divine Liturgy—all of them interpret this bread as the Body and Blood of Christ.

On the first level, we might say that “bread” includes all our human needs: the clothes we wear and the roof over our heads. But at its deepest level, it means the Body of Christ. Christ said: “I am the bread, the manna, the bread which came down from heaven.” I am that bread. He, therefore, is the true bread. If you ask why we say the Our Father toward the end of the Divine Liturgy, I will answer: because we are being reminded of the bread of the Holy Eucharist, and we ask the Father to give us that Eucharistic bread.

The Body of Christ. This is the true bread, my beloved, and this is what we must seek. When Saint Ignatius was being taken in chains to Rome to be devoured by wild beasts, he wrote letters along the way. Read his Epistle to the Romans.

In that extraordinary letter, which reveals the full mystical depth of this holy man, he says: “I desire nothing. Every material desire”—that is, every attachment that expresses love for material things—“every material desire has been extinguished within me.”

I have no desire for anything—nothing, nothing at all. As Ecclesiastes would say: “Vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” “I seek food,” he says—food to eat—“the bread, the Body of my Christ; and drink”—that which we drink—“the Blood of my Christ.” These are the words of Saint Ignatius. They are renowned. This is the Mystery which the Saints seek, which they experience as essential to their lives, and which the early Christians received so very frequently. Saint Cyril continues: “And bread strengthens the heart of man.” Yes.

“Strengthen your heart,” Saint Cyril says. Strengthen your heart. Which heart? The one beating here at sixty-five beats a minute? No, my beloved. He means the spiritual heart—that is, your soul. Strengthen your spirit, “by partaking of it as spiritual food,” by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, “and make the face of your soul glad.” Make the face of your soul bright and joyful, because only when a person receives Holy Communion knowingly and, as far as possible, worthily can that person truly have a joyful and radiant countenance.

“And may you, with unveiled face and a pure conscience, reflect the glory of the Lord.” You, he says, are to keep your head uncovered—the man keeps his head uncovered when he serves and receives Holy Communion. With a pure conscience reflecting the glory of the Lord, may you go “from glory to glory in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.” As you receive Holy Communion throughout your life, may you pass from glory to glory.

From glory to glory. The Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, my beloved, is not a means; it is the goal. I may receive Holy Unction in order to recover my health; I may receive this Mystery for one purpose and another for something else; I may enter Holy Matrimony in order to marry and have children. But this Mystery unites me with Christ, and that is precisely the final goal: theosis, divinisation. Through this Mystery we are united with God and brought into theosis. And as I bring this Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis to a close, I pray for all of us that we may make worthy and proper use of this supreme Mystery above all others, the Mystery of Christ’s love.

Πήγε στη Ναζαρέτ και κήρυξε. Θύμωσαν όταν τους είπε ότι ο Ηλίας πήγε σε μια χήρα όχι Εβραία. «Γιατί, τάχα, εμείς τι είμαστε;» Είδατε αυτός ο σοβινισμός των Εβραίων; Και τον άρπαξαν, τον άρπαξαν, τον έσπρωχναν και πήγαιναν να τον γκρεμίσουν, λέει, από έναν γκρεμό, από έναν βράχο εκεί της περιοχής των. Ξέρετε, είναι εκπληκτικό να μπορείς να πιάσεις τον ενανθρωπήσαντα Θεό, να τον γκρεμίσεις από έναν βράχο. Είναι όμως πιο εκπληκτικό να μπορείς να πιάσεις αυτόν τον Θεό και να τον σταυρώσεις. Εκεί το σκάνδαλο. Είναι δυνατόν να είναι αυτός ο Θεός;

Κύριος ο Ιαχβέ, ο Κύριος του Ισραήλ που μίλησε στο Σινά, είναι δυνατόν;

«Στηρίζει την καρδίαν του ανθρώπου ο άρτος και του ιλαρύναι το πρόσωπον εν ελαίω». Ποιος πραγματικά άρτος είναι εκείνος ο οποίος έρχεται να στηρίξει την καρδία του ανθρώπου;
