Summary
The lecture explains Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s fourth Mystagogical Catechesis on the Body and Blood of Christ in the Divine Eucharist. As ordinary food nourishes the whole body, Holy Communion sanctifies the believer’s entire human existence and unites humanity with divine grace. Citing Dositheos of Jerusalem and the patristic tradition, the lecture affirms that the consecrated gifts are truly and substantially the same Body born of the Theotokos, crucified, risen, ascended, and destined to return, and the same Blood shed for the life of the world.

My beloved, we are now in the fourth Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem, concerning the Body and Blood of Christ. You will remember that we began last time with the first paragraph. You will also remember that we spoke about what the Lord said concerning this Mystery—that is, what are known as the Lord’s words of institution of the Mystery. This is why, in the Divine Liturgy, if you have noticed, it says that after He had taken bread...
“Take, eat”; then He took the cup: “Drink of it, all of you.” At that point, when the words “Take, eat; drink of it, all of you” are spoken, the consecration has not yet taken place. The consecration comes a little later, when we say, “Thine own of Thine own.” The Gifts have not yet been consecrated: we are lifting up wine and bread so that He may give us from His own Gifts. “Thine own of Thine own”—we offer to Thee what is Thine, from what is Thine. And a little later we shall say: “And make this bread the precious Body of Thy Christ.”
The Second Coming, the Second Coming, the Ascension, the Resurrection, the Apocalypse, the Resurrection, the Kingdom of Heaven. The gift we offered to Thee is made the Body and Blood of Christ, as we said just above, with the words, “Changing them by Thy Holy Spirit.” Here we have the consecration—the very heart of the heart. When we hear the words, “Take, eat; drink of it, all of you,” we are still before the...
consecration. Those words do not themselves constitute the consecration; they recount the words by which Christ instituted the Mystery, for through them He established the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist: “Take, eat,” and so forth. Thus the Apostle Paul says: “On the night when our Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying: ‘Take, eat; this is My Body,’” and so forth. You see that the Apostle Paul is recounting these words of institution spoken by the Lord. But let us examine these words a little more closely.
It says, “He gave thanks.” I explained to you last time what this means and why it is expressed in this way: He offered prayer to the Father—a prayer of thanksgiving, not a prayer of petition. He gave thanks because the hour had come for human beings to become partakers—and please pay close attention to the phrase I am about to use—of the divine nature. We probably shall not reach that point today. Saint Cyril says this in the third paragraph. Very well, we shall not reach it. Of course, he does not mean that they become partakers of God’s essence, but partakers of divine grace...
through the Holy Spirit. We shall examine this when we reach that passage. So Jesus Christ, the Son, gave thanks to the Father for this. Once, when the Seventy disciples returned and said to Him, “In Thy name, Lord, we cast out demons,” and so forth—pay attention to this point—the Lord, it says, “rejoiced in the Spirit” and offered a very brief prayer to the Father: “My Father, I thank Thee because Thou hast hidden Thy wisdom from those who are conceited and hast revealed it to babes”—that is, to people of no worldly prominence.
Jesus rejoiced and offered a prayer of thanksgiving. Here too He offers a prayer of thanksgiving because the hour had come—the time had arrived—for human beings to become partakers of God. This is more or less what we discussed last time, so I shall not dwell on it. We also discussed the verb “broke”—the Greek verb meaning to break something into pieces with one’s hands, without using a knife. Now let us look at something else a little further on. It says, “He gave”—He gave. “To His disciples, saying,” and so forth. He gave. My beloved, this word “gave” carries very great significance. God gives. To whom does He give? To human beings.
He gives them His human Body, for after consecrating the forms of bread and wine, He gives them to His disciples. This expresses nothing other than love: it is a relationship of love between God and humanity. He gave. God is always giving, always giving. He Himself is without need; He lacks nothing. Yet He is always giving. How beautiful this word is: “He gave.” A verse from the Psalms says: “He has scattered abroad; He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.” Notice the verb “to scatter”—“He has scattered abroad.” It is very characteristic, for it shows...
generosity. We say of someone, “You scatter your money about,” meaning that you do not count it out carefully. God does not measure His Gifts; He scatters them abroad upon those who love Him. He gives them freely. Elsewhere God says, through the Apostle Paul, that He did not give the Holy Spirit by measure. He did not give Him by measure. In the Old Testament, He was given by measure. So here we see what this word “gave” means. God gave humanity the most precious thing He could ever give: His human nature, inseparably united to His divinity. Astonishing!
Could God ever have given anything greater—or, better, could humanity ever have received anything greater? Is there anything greater than the Body and Blood of Christ? It is the crown of all God’s Gifts. This is why it is expressed by that word, “gave.” My beloved, rejoice in this word: “gave.” Thou, O Lord, hast given us these things. What do we give Thee? Do you remember what we said about Baptism in the earlier catecheses? Or perhaps it was in answer to a question—I beg your pardon; I think I mentioned it in catechism class. I said that a person gives. He gives a few hairs from his head. Yet who gave me the very hair that grows upon my head?
God Himself. Nevertheless, I call it the hair of my own head; I cut some off and give it to God. “Here, Lord, I have nothing else to give Thee. Take these few hairs, offered in devotion to Thy love; take them.” This is why I told you to rejoice in that word, “gave.” Then God gave His Son. He gave His Son, “that whoever believes in Him should not perish,” as the Gospel according to John says in the third chapter, “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” But let us continue, because when one lingers over a single idea, one can remain there for a very long time. One certainly rejoices in it, but there is one drawback: one cannot move further on. “He gave to His own disciples.”
He gave to His disciples, saying—saying what? “Take, eat; this is My Body.” Take; receive. Receive. Please pay close attention to this word “take” and see what it contains. When He said to them, “Take”—or “receive,” as we would say in everyday Greek—He intended to reverse a commandment, the first commandment given in Paradise: “Do not take from the fruit of this tree.” Do not take!
Do not stretch out your hand. Indeed, He does not tell them only not to stretch out their hands, but not even to look upon that fruit, because Eve first saw the fruit, then conceived a desire for it, and said: “The fruit is beautiful to look upon, but more beautiful still to taste.” And she took it and ate. God therefore said that they were neither to look upon it nor to touch it—not merely that they were not to eat it, but that they were not even to touch it. For sight and touch, you know, are the preludes to the act itself. Let me put it plainly: are not sight and touch the preludes to a sinful, carnal...
act? Sight and touch. This is why God says, “Do not even touch it.” Nothing at all—keep far away. At that time, then, He told them not to take. They took on their own authority, and they died. They took, ate, and died. Now—now we have something astonishing. Some people say that the Book of Genesis, the account of Adam and Eve, is a myth, and so forth. What a dreadful delusion! We cannot understand the theology of the New Testament without the first three chapters of Genesis. Now God commands the opposite: “I told you not to take, because you would die. But now, take and eat, because now, if you do not take, you will die.” It is the reverse. Indeed, Christ said: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life.” This means that unless a person eats the flesh of the Son of Man—He stated it both positively and negatively—and drinks His blood, he has no eternal life. Thus, where once we had the command, “Do not take,” now we have the command, “Take.” And please take note: it is a commandment, and I would say a supreme commandment. Whatever else He may tell you—what did Christ say to His disciples?
“I shall meet you in Galilee.” They did not go, yet it was not a matter of death; they did not die. But here it is a matter of life or death. If you do not stretch out your hand to receive—receive what?—the Body and Blood of Christ.
Certainly not from the tree of knowledge, which was misused, but from the Tree of Life. For God, it says, planted two trees in the midst of Paradise: one was the tree of knowledge, and the other was the Tree of Life. And the Tree of Life is Jesus Christ. It is His...
Body and His Blood. Therefore we must—we must stretch out our hand to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. “Take, eat.” He said, “Eat.” To our first-created ancestors He said, “You shall not eat.” “On the day you eat of it, you shall surely die.” On the day you eat, you will die a death. Now, if you do not eat, you will die the eternal spiritual death. Now you must eat, because by eating you will have eternal life. Notice something here. When we say...
that Christ said, “Eat,” what does this mean? We certainly receive the Holy Spirit: He comes to us, and we receive Him through the Mystery, especially through Chrismation and Baptism. But why did Christ tell us here to eat? It means that I receive Him in the same way I receive any food. I put the food into my mouth, chew it, and swallow it. First, of course, this expresses the fact that now I must eat, whereas then I was not to eat. That is the first point. Second, eating means that, just as any food is distributed throughout every member of the body, down to the very last cell of the organism, so here too I must eat the Body of Christ, because it is distributed throughout my entire being. What I said to you earlier about what we regard as unseemly is expressed beautifully in a poem by Saint Symeon the New Theologian. One morning he had received Holy Communion. He received every day. Every day Saint Symeon the New Theologian experienced a manifestation of God. In one of his poems he says: “Where shall I place, and where shall I rest, these members of mine—my hands, my feet...
my reproductive organs? They have all been divinised; they have all undergone theosis.” Do you see? Everything. We cannot say that one part of the body undergoes theosis while another does not, or that the reproductive region is unclean. No! The whole human body undergoes theosis; it is divinised. Why? Because the Body and Blood of Christ are distributed throughout the whole body, just as material food becomes blood—our food and water, all these things...
are they not made into blood through my liver and carried to the very last cell of my body? So the whole human person undergoes theosis. I would add one further point. This also expresses that the Son of God truly became flesh. Thus it says in the first chapter, in the first verse: “In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The Word became flesh. It does not say “body”; it says “flesh.” Flesh is a stark, physical way of speaking about the body. Why does it put it this way? John the Evangelist wished to show that the Son of God truly became human. And when He said to those...
When the Lord, after feeding the five thousand, told those people of Capernaum to eat His Body and drink His Blood, they said, “How is it possible for us to eat His flesh and drink His Blood?” You see? To eat His flesh. And the Lord said, “Whoever does not eat My flesh and drink My Blood does not have eternal life.” What He wishes to express here, then, is this: Jesus, the Word of God, truly became man, and through His human nature He nourishes the faithful and unites them with God, so that they become partakers of the divine nature—that is, of divine grace. It is astonishing, truly astonishing. So much, then, for the word “eat.”
“This is My Body.” And taking the cup and giving thanks, He said, “Take...” I will not repeat everything, because I spoke only about the Body; the same applies to the Blood. “Drink; this is My Blood.” This, He says, is My Body. This is My Blood. Now, when we say “My Body and My Blood,” we mean that it is the Body and Blood of Christ. Saint Cyril says: “Since He Himself”—that is, Christ Himself—“has declared and said concerning the bread, ‘This is My Body...’”
“Who, then, will dare to doubt? And since He Himself has affirmed and said, ‘This is My Blood,’ who will ever hesitate and say that it is not His Blood?” Saint Cyril explains the words “This is My Body” and “This is My Blood” in this way: “When Christ Himself declares concerning the bread, ‘This is My Body,’ who can dare to doubt it? And when He assures us, ‘This is My Blood,’ who can hesitate and say, ‘This is not His Blood’?” Pay close attention here, my beloved.
I should, of course, warn you that, in what we shall say from Saint Cyril’s catechesis about Holy Communion and this Mystery, you must not imagine that we shall exhaust the subject. Far from it! I am simply dwelling on what Saint Cyril tells us, while perhaps adding something in passing here and there. We are not going to exhaust the subject. However willing we may be, we would stray far from our theme, which is the Mystagogical Catechesis itself. Still, it does no harm if we occasionally wander a little—though, I repeat, without exhausting the subject.
Remember—remember how the disciples understood the Mystery when they received it. This is the point before us now. How did they understand it? How did they understand Christ’s words? We must accept that no one could have understood Christ’s words better than His disciples. For I ask you: how could the Lord have handed down this Mystery for the salvation of humanity if His disciples had not understood what the Mystery contained? Could that have been possible? Together with its transmission, then, came the illumination of the Holy Spirit.
They had to understand this Mystery so that they could hand it down to humanity until the end of history. Who, then, were the first to understand it? The disciples, of course, and they understood it truly and precisely. And how did they understand it? Exactly as they recorded it: that this is the Body of the Lord and this is the Blood of the Lord. The Apostle Paul would even offer a more detailed explanation. Above all, however, their understanding was first doctrinal and then experiential. As has rightly been said, for three years the disciples had the Lord beside them; now, through the handing down of the Mystery, they had Him within them.
For three years He was beside them; now He was within them.
Thus they understood both doctrinally and through experience, and this is what they handed down to the Church. The Church received it from the Apostles—for why do we say, “In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church”? The Church is called apostolic because she received these great truths from the Apostles. This is the Apostolic Church. The Church, therefore, experienced—and continues to experience—what the disciples themselves experienced when they received the Mystery. Their experience was that this truly is the Body and Blood of Christ. And among all the Fathers who wrote about the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, we find
precisely the same tradition. Saint Cyril’s testimony is certainly not the earliest; we have more ancient witnesses. His is from the fourth century, around AD 350. Saint Justin Martyr and Philosopher, for example, in one of his Apologies—I believe it was his Second Apology—in which he presented a defense before the Roman Senate, refers to the Mystery of the Eucharist. He states clearly and precisely that we receive in Holy Communion this very Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whether the Roman senators liked it or not, whether they understood it or not, Saint Justin set forth the truth
exactly as he had received it. This was the living experience of the Church, and we find this same experience throughout the centuries. We Orthodox preserve it above all. To be entirely fair, the Roman Catholics preserve it as well, because the schism took place in the eleventh century, after the divisions of the tenth century. They could not, therefore, have possessed a different tradition concerning the holiest of the Mysteries. Those who departed from it were the Protestants. Poor and wretched people—they say things entirely foreign to the truth about this Mystery, if you will permit the expression.
I will not tell you now exactly what I mean by “things entirely foreign to the truth.” Perhaps I shall tell you this evening, or, if we do not have time, at our next meeting. I shall read to you what Dositheos of Jerusalem says about the Mysteries in the seventeenth decree of his Confession. These are digressions we have to make; what else can we do? There he explains what the Protestants say, because Dositheos of Jerusalem had confronted them. They had appeared on the stage of history, and so he wrote and confessed the faith from the Orthodox standpoint. Yes, then: this is the Body and this is the Blood of Christ. Of course, this experience...
Um...
of the Mystical Supper did not come suddenly. The disciples had already undergone earlier experiences that prefigured it. One such foreshadowing was the feeding of the five thousand. At that time the Lord said—and pay close attention here—“Gather up the fragments that remain.” So, my beloved, we see that the disciples had an initial experience, and that experience was the feeding of the five thousand. When the Lord said, “So that nothing may be lost,” He meant that not even the tiniest crumb was to be lost. On one level, of course, this was a simple lesson in frugality and good stewardship: frugality, because it concerned more than fish and bread, and good stewardship, so that nothing would be thrown away. But at a deeper level, it was an experience of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist and showed that nothing of it must be lost. The proof is what followed. Because they had been fed, the people of Capernaum sought out the Lord, found Him, and said, “Lord, why did You leave?” He answered, “You seek Me because you ate your fill of bread. Do not seek the food that perishes, but the food that endures,”
the food that remains. It was there that He spoke to them about the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, this time in a doctrinal way. In that first experience, the disciples began to perceive the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Thus, when Great Thursday came—as we call it—and with it the Mystical Supper, and then, after Christ’s Resurrection, within the Church, the disciples would hand down the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. This would be their third experience, now within the life of the Church. The disciples therefore possessed an exact understanding of this Mystery. Yet all this time I have been telling you what Saint Cyril says here: “When the Lord Himself has declared that this is His Body and His Blood, who will dare to doubt it?” And because the Church received this living experience, allow me to read something to you. It comes from a very old homily I once gave—a very, very old one—for, as you see, from time to time we say these things again so that they may be renewed in us.
Um...
Dositheos of Jerusalem, as I told you, lived in the seventeenth century.
Forgive me.
He lived in the seventeenth century, and this is from the seventeenth decree of his Confession. Listen to what he writes. It is exceedingly important, so that no one may say, “I did not know this.” Do you remember, two or three years ago, when a member of parliament attacked the Mystery of the Eucharist, saying that we should not receive Holy Communion because, supposedly, there might be germs or something of that sort? We devoted two entire talks to the matter. At that time I read you this Confession of Dositheos. I consider it extremely important. Listen: “In the celebration of this”—that is, of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—“we believe the Lord Jesus Christ to be present.” During its sacred celebration, when the Mystery is performed and brought to completion, we believe
that He Himself, the Lord Jesus Christ, is present. The question is: in what manner is He present? Dositheos now addresses the foolish claims of the Protestants that I mentioned earlier. He says, “Not typologically”; that is, what we receive in Holy Communion is not merely a type of the Body and Blood of Christ. “Nor iconically”; it is not simply an image or representation. No. “Nor through some surpassing grace.” Take the Artoklasia, the blessing of the loaves, for example: when we receive the blessed bread, we say that we receive a blessing.
The prayer itself says that we receive a blessing, and this is why people offer the Artoklasia. The blessed bread of the Artoklasia possesses a special grace—it is not ordinary bread, for it has been blessed. Could what is upon the Holy Table, then, be present “through surpassing grace, as in the other Mysteries”? No, not even in that sense. “Nor by mere presence,” as certain Fathers have said concerning Baptism. “Nor by enartismos.” Listen to this word: enartismos. It means that Christ is hidden within the bread.
What we call Holy Communion is not a case of Christ being hidden within it. Nor is it, Dositheos says, “that the divinity of the Word is hypostatically united to the bread set forth for the Eucharist, as the followers of Luther believe in their great ignorance and wretchedness.” Here “believe” means to hold an opinion or conviction; the Greek word comes from the verb meaning “to suppose.” The followers of Luther—that is, the Protestants—believe this “in their great ignorance and wretchedness.” And this is said by a man who had received only a basic general education. But then, how is Christ present? In none of these ways. How, then, are we to understand that this is the Body and Blood of Christ? Dositheos now says: “But truly...
and really.” It is truly and really the Body and Blood of Christ—Christ Himself. He continues: “So that after the consecration of the bread and wine,” after, he says, the consecration of the bread and wine, they “are changed.” Here he uses several infinitives: changed, transubstantiated, transformed, converted. In the end, the Church retained only the infinitive “to be changed,” because in the Divine Liturgy we say, “Changing them by Your Holy Spirit”: this into the Body of Christ, and this into the Blood of Christ. Changing them. “The bread into the true Body of the Lord itself.” And what is this true Body of the Lord? He gives a wonderful description.
Listen! Listen to which Body this is upon the Holy Table. It is not Christ hidden within the bread; it is not there merely as a type or an image—none of these. Which Body is it? “The Body that was born in Bethlehem of the Ever-Virgin.” This is the Body born of the Most Holy Theotokos. “The Body that was baptized in the Jordan.” This is the Body baptized in the Jordan.
Saint John the Forerunner touched His sacred head—the Greek word here means the crown of the head. “It suffered,” meaning that it was crucified; “it was buried and rose again”—the very Body that the disciples touched after the Resurrection. “It ascended, sits at the right hand of God the Father, and will come upon the clouds of heaven.” This is the Body we have upon the Holy Table. This very Body! Do you understand, my beloved? It is overwhelming. Awesome—truly awesome! This is why John Chrysostom says that wherever you serve the Divine Liturgy, wherever the Divine Liturgy is celebrated, every Holy Table—provided, of course, that there is a valid ordination, by which I mean Apostolic Succession—differs in no way, even in the poorest church, from that Upper Room. Which Upper Room? The one in which Christ gave His Body and Blood to the disciples on Great and Holy Thursday. It is the same; it is the same. What is? That very Body born of the Most Holy Theotokos, baptized in the Jordan, which suffered upon the Cross, was buried, rose again, ascended, sits at the right hand of God the Father, and will come again upon the clouds. This is the Body we receive from the Holy Tables.
Amazing! This is why I asked you to come and listen, because this subject—the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—is so important. And the wine is transformed and transubstantiated into the true Blood of the Lord itself: into the real and true Blood of Christ, which, while He hung upon the Cross, was poured out for the life of the world. When He hung upon the Cross, His Blood flowed for the salvation of mankind. This is that Blood—the same Blood, the very same. Identical? No, that word “identical” in the sense of an exact likeness is not correct. You see why Dositheos sometimes uses several verbs here. When we say an exact likeness, that means...
Zinc can look exactly like silver. So I withdraw the expression “an exact likeness.” It is wrong, wrong, wrong. I take it back. What I mean is that it is one and the same thing—the very same. Of course, if you ask, “But in our mouths we taste wine and bread,” Saint Cyril will address this further on. But let me not run ahead of his text. Let us now see what Saint Cyril says next. “Once, by His own will, He changed water into wine at Cana of Galilee; is He not worthy of belief when He changes wine into Blood?” This is in the second paragraph.
Christ, he says, changed water into wine at Cana of Galilee with a single gesture of His will. Is He not worthy of belief when He now changes the wine into His own Blood? It is very beautiful.
So, He who changed water into wine is the same One who now changes the wine into His own Blood. And since I have mentioned this, I cannot resist the temptation to tell you something, even if I tire you a little.
Well... As you know, Lord Byron—the Philhellene, the Englishman Byron, as he is known—was not a particularly good pupil at school or, rather, he was a rather lazy one. Once they had a composition to write, and the teacher gave them a subject. Before he even heard the subject, lazy as he was, he felt sleepy—who knows why—and said to the boy beside him, “Look, I’m going to sleep.” “What?” “I’m going to sleep. I can’t stay awake; I’m sleepy. When he gives you the subject, tell me afterward.” So he fell asleep. The class went on, the time ran out, and the teacher began collecting their papers and compositions.
His classmate woke him. “Wake up! The teacher is collecting the notebooks and compositions.” “What subject did he give you?” “He asked us to write about the miracle Christ performed at Cana of Galilee, changing water into wine.” At once Byron took his notebook and wrote: “And the water, when it saw its God, blushed.” He came first. I think that line could express beautifully what we are saying. This passage reminded me of it, because Saint Cyril says, “By His own gesture He changed it at Cana of Galilee”—by His own gesture.
By His glance, yes. When Christ enters His creation, He makes of it whatever He wills and uses it as He wills, for He is the Lord. And if we truly believe that He is the Creator of all things, why should He be unable to change wine into His own Blood? Saint Cyril continues: “When invited to a bodily wedding, He performed this extraordinary miracle; shall He not much more be acknowledged as having granted the children of the bridal chamber the enjoyment of His own Body and Blood?” In other words, He went to an ordinary wedding...
and performed this extraordinary miracle. Notice: a wedding. And then he speaks of the children of the bridal chamber—again, a wedding, but now a spiritual wedding. For the Lord told a parable about the children of the bridal chamber, those who belong to the wedding chamber. The room that receives the newly married couple is called the bridal chamber. This, then, is the bridal chamber, and its children are the faithful—all of us. We who are faithful belong to the bridal chamber. The bridal chamber is the Kingdom of God; and for the sake of the children of the Kingdom, the children of the bridal chamber, how much more...
will He change the bread into His Body and the wine into His Blood? These are beautiful arguments from Saint Cyril—or rather, what else should we call them? They are arguments offered for clarification, to help us understand, because the proof lies within the matter itself. What do I mean by that? Once you have believed in Jesus Christ, the question is settled. You need no further arguments. You need only to have believed who Jesus Christ is. And when you say, “Christ said that this is His Blood; Christ said that this is His Body,” no supporting evidence or proof is needed. You have no need of it. And now we move to the third paragraph.
The second was very short. “Therefore, with complete assurance, let us partake of the Body and Blood of Christ.” With complete assurance, then. The Greek word means precisely that: a full and complete certainty. You know that in ancient Greek, the verb translated as “to assure” means to bring something to fullness. Here it also carries the sense that the word “information” has in modern Greek. Through everything we have said, Saint Cyril wishes to make clear that we partake of the Body and Blood of Christ. We do not say the Body and Blood of the Word.
The Word does not have Body and Blood apart from His Incarnation. We say the Body and Blood of Christ. Why? In the prayer of consecration we likewise say, “And make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ,” because this plainly refers to His human nature; that is self-evident. “For under the form of bread the Body is given to you, and under the form of wine the Blood is given to you, so that, by partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, you may become one body and one blood with Christ.” The form of the Body is given to you as bread, and the form of the Blood as wine...
so that they may become for you the Body and Blood of Christ, and you may become one body and one blood with Christ. Perhaps you were a little confused when he used the word “type.” Pay attention. In the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great, Saint Basil speaks of antitypes and calls these the antitypes of the Body and Blood of Your Christ. The words “type” and “antitype” apply before the consecration. The bread is a type of the Body of Christ, and the wine a type of the Blood of Christ—the first of the Body, the second of the Blood—but this is before the consecration.
Notice carefully what Saint Cyril means here. First he says that these types were given to you so that they might become for you the Body and Blood, and so that you might become one body and one blood with Christ. Therefore, do not be confused when you hear the word “antitype” or “antitypes” in the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great. I repeat: this is before the consecration. “For in this way...” You know, we examined the words “one body and one blood” last time, so I will not explain them again. “For in this way we also become Christ-bearers, as His Body and Blood are distributed throughout our members.” Thus, he says, we become Christ-bearers.
We bear Christ within us. Do you see? His Body and Blood are distributed throughout our own members—throughout all our members, every one of them. I say it again: the whole human person is sanctified. How carefully, then, must we guard our bodies and not cast them into sin! The Apostle speaks of this in the sixth chapter of his First Epistle to the Corinthians: “He who is joined to the Lord is one body. He who is joined to a prostitute is one body.”
Forgive me; I will say it again. “He who is joined to a prostitute is one body, but he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit. Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Certainly not!” To be “joined” means to be united. And how is a person united in fornication or in Holy Matrimony? Holy Scripture says—and the Apostle Paul says there—“For the two shall become one flesh.” Did God not say that the two would become one flesh? Therefore, if you unite yourself not within Holy Matrimony but in fornication—for the Apostle is speaking here of fornication, of relations outside marriage...
with a woman—then consider what happens. When, on the other hand, you receive Holy Communion, you are united with the Lord and become one spirit with Him. Why does the Apostle say “spirit” rather than “flesh”? Because this Body of the Lord is spiritual. When we say “spiritual,” we mean the Body that is now in heaven, the Body that rose and is in heaven. This Body of Christ is spiritual. Yet “spiritual” does not mean immaterial. It means that the Body is governed and directed by the Holy Spirit. This is why he says that whoever receives the Body of Christ becomes one spirit with Him. And what does it mean to become one spirit? It means that the person is preparing his whole existence...
So that he may become a spiritual being—that is, incorruptible and immortal, not immaterial. Take careful note: not immaterial. For what did Christ say after His Resurrection? “Come and see that My body is not a spirit,” meaning a ghost, “but My real body,” now governed by the Holy Spirit. It does not eat, it does not hunger, it has no need of food. He did eat, but He ate to assure them that He was not a ghost. So, the Apostle says, a man united himself to an immoral woman. This does not apply within Holy Matrimony. It certainly does not mean that married couples are forbidden to receive Holy Communion after coming together. Far from it! They need only be lawfully married.
They must be blessed by God and live according to the will of God. This is not a sin. Indeed, Saint Nikodemos says that nowhere does the Rudder prescribe how long married couples must abstain—outside the Lenten fasts, of course. It prescribes only three days of abstinence before husband and wife receive Holy Communion. Their union is certainly not a sin—God forbid! But how can you dare to receive Holy Communion, becoming one with the Body of the Lord, and then become one with the body of a prostitute? The Apostle says: “Shall I then make the Body of the Lord, after receiving Holy Communion, into the members of a prostitute? May it never be! May it never be!” My beloved, understand this.
When you are raising your children, do not push them into fornication—especially you fathers. After that, the children cannot receive Holy Communion. They are barred from Holy Communion. This sin is not forgiven. Take careful note. Do not say, “But how else will they become men?” or offer this excuse or that. For God’s sake! For God’s sake, for God’s sake, cast off these strange ideas that may still linger among us, ideas we absorb from the mindset of this world. No, please, no. Both the boy and the girl must remain chaste and pure until Holy Matrimony. And they should enter Holy Matrimony without a premarital relationship or an engagement lasting several years—an engagement lasting several years.
They meet, and soon afterward they marry properly, so that they may remain under the will of God. Then they can receive Holy Communion; otherwise, they cannot. Take careful note. Here, then, we see that the Body and Blood of Christ are diffused throughout our entire being, and we become Christ-bearers. Saint Ignatius of Antioch used this word, “Christ-bearers,” in one of his epistles. “We are,” he says, “Christ-bearers and temple-bearers.” He has many such expressions. They are truly beautiful, and they are not mere literary turns of phrase; they correspond to an ontological reality. Saint Cyril continues: “Thus, according to the blessed Peter, we become partakers of the divine nature.” So, he says, according to the Apostle Peter, we become partakers of the divine nature. But what does it mean to be partakers...
...of the divine nature? Do we perhaps become united with the nature of God? My beloved, that nature is unapproachable and can never be united with anything created. The nature of God is uncreated. What, then, does this mean? But since this is a rather large...
...a large subject—not an exceedingly large one, but our time does not allow us to take it up now, because it has run out—God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Υπάρχει μεγαλύτερο πράγμα που μπόρεσε ποτέ ο Θεός να δώσει ή, καλύτερα, που μπόρεσε ο άνθρωπος να λάβει; Υπάρχει μεγαλύτερο από το σώμα και το αίμα του Χριστού; Είναι η κορωνίς πάντων των δωρεών του Θεού. Γι' αυτό εκφράζεται με εκείνο το «έδωκε». Να το χαρείτε, αγαπητοί μου, αυτό το «έδωκε». Εσύ, Κύριε, έδωκες σε μας αυτά. Εμείς τι Σου δίδουμε; Ενθυμείσθε που είπαμε για τη βάπτιση στις προηγούμενες κατηχήσεις; Ή μια απορία... Νομίζω, συγγνώμη, ήταν απορία που είχα πει στο κατηχητικό σχολείο. Και είπα ότι ο άνθρωπος δίδει. Δίδει λίγα μαλλιά από την κεφαλή του. Και μήπως τα μαλλιά που φυτρώνουν στο κεφάλι μου, ποιος είναι εκείνος που μου τα έδωσε;
πράξεως; Η όραση και η αφή. Γι' αυτό λέει ο Θεός ούτε να εγγίζετε. Τίποτα, μακριά. Τότε τους είπε λοιπόν να μη λάβουν. Εκείνοι αυθαιρέτως έλαβαν και πέθαναν. Έλαβαν, έφαγαν και πέθαναν. Τώρα... Τώρα υπάρχει... Είναι εκπληκτικό. Λένε μερικοί, λένε μερικοί ότι το βιβλίο της Γενέσεως, η ιστορία του Αδάμ και της Εύας, είναι μύθος κ.λπ. Ω, τρομάρα τους! Δεν μπορούμε να καταλάβουμε τη θεολογία της Καινής Διαθήκης αν δεν έχουμε τα τρία πρώτα κεφάλαια της Γενέσεως. Τώρα λέγει ο Θεός το αντίθετο: «Εγώ σας είπα μη λάβετε, γιατί θα πεθάνετε. Τώρα...» λάβετε και φάτε, διότι τώρα, εάν δεν λάβετε, θα πεθάνετε». Το αντίστροφο. Πράγματι ο Χριστός είπε: «Αυτός που τρώγει τη σάρκα Μου και πίνει το αίμα Μου έχει ζωήν αιώνιον». Που σημαίνει, εάν κανείς δεν φάει τη σάρκα του Υιού του ανθρώπου —το είπε και έτσι μάλιστα, το είπε και θετικώς και αρνητικώς— και δεν πιει το αίμα Του, δεν έχει ζωήν αιώνιον. Άρα λοιπόν, ενώ τότε είχαμε την εντολή «μη λάβετε», τώρα έχουμε την εντολή «λάβετε». Και προσέξτε, παρακαλώ, είναι εντολή και θα έλεγα ότι είναι κορυφαία εντολή. Διότι ό,τι άλλο σου πει... Τι είπε ο Χριστός στους μαθητάς Του;
