Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets Isaiah’s mountain as the Church revealed at Pentecost to all nations, with prophetic wine signifying the Eucharist and anointing signifying the Holy Spirit. Baptism and marriage were historically joined to the Divine Liturgy, and the newly baptized received Holy Communion immediately as the completion of their initiation. No external power can separate believers from Christ’s Eucharistic union; only their own denial can sever it, so they should receive Communion regularly and consciously throughout life.

My dear friends, as always, we are studying the catechetical lectures of Saint Cyril, and specifically the Third Mystagogical Catechesis, concerning Chrismation. One final paragraph remains, the seventh. Let us finish that as well and then, with God’s help, enter the Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis, which concerns the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. You will remember that Saint Cyril has already told us a great deal about Chrismation.
He now continues and brings this catechesis to its conclusion: “Long ago, the blessed Isaiah spoke this prophecy: ‘And the Lord shall prepare for all nations upon this mountain.’” This is in the twenty-fifth chapter of Isaiah. In other words, the Lord shall prepare something for all nations “upon this mountain.” Saint Cyril now interprets this and says, “By the mountain he means the Church.” And elsewhere Isaiah says, “And in the last days, the mountain of the Lord shall be manifest.” In the last days, he says, the mountain of the Lord will be clearly revealed.
“They shall drink wine; they shall drink gladness; they shall be anointed with myrrh.” They will drink wine, they will drink gladness and joy, and they will be anointed with myrrh. This too is from Isaiah, chapter twenty-five, verse six. “And so that you may know with certainty that this myrrh of which you hear is mystical, he says: ‘Deliver all these things to the nations, for the counsel of the Lord extends to all nations.’” What does this new quotation mean? It is again from Isaiah, from the same passage, chapter twenty-five, verse seven, the very next verse.
You are to deliver all these things to the nations, because this is the counsel of the Lord, the will of God, for all nations. Let us examine this. First, he says that the Church is represented as a mountain. As Isaiah says, the mountain of the Lord will be manifest, clearly revealed. And Saint Cyril interprets this mountain as the Church. As I have told you, when Isaiah says, “In the last days, the mountain of the Lord shall be manifest,” which last days does he mean? I have explained this before, but there is no harm in repeating it: what are called the last days are connected with an appearing of the Lord. Since there are two appearings of the Lord—one that has already taken place and another that has not yet taken place; or, to speak more precisely, since there will be two appearings of the Lord—there are also two senses in which we speak of the last days. The last days can refer to everything connected with Christ’s first coming, and they can also refer to everything connected with Christ’s Second Coming. Thus, we have two categories of the last days. Here, it is the first category that is meant.
These are the last days associated with Christ’s first coming, when the Church would be made manifest. And indeed, the Church was made manifest. On the day of Pentecost, the Church was revealed, and revealed to all nations. The Church would not remain only in Jerusalem but would spread throughout all humanity, across the whole earth, among all nations. And then there is the central point of the prophecy: “They shall drink wine; they shall drink gladness; they shall be anointed with myrrh.” This is why Saint Cyril chooses this particular prophecy.
They will drink wine. What is this wine that they will drink? It is nothing other than the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, because it would make no sense for the prophet simply to say that they would drink wine. Do people not already drink wine? No, he is referring to the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. And then, “They shall be anointed with myrrh.” What myrrh? They will be anointed with the Holy Spirit. Here, then, are the two Mysteries: the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist and the Mystery of communion in the Holy Spirit. And this will give them joy and gladness: “They shall drink gladness.” For when someone partakes of these two, then certainly...
...he also partakes of the gladness and joy of Christ and of the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril concludes with an exhortation: “Therefore, having been anointed with this Holy Chrism, keep it within you spotless and blameless through good works, becoming well pleasing to Jesus Christ, the author of our salvation, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.” This Chrism with which you are to be anointed—or with which you have already been anointed—preserve it spotless and pure. Do not stain it; keep it blameless.
The word “blame” means an accusation; therefore, “blameless” means without accusation. You will achieve this by “advancing through good works,” by doing good works, and by becoming well pleasing to the author of our salvation, Jesus Christ, to whom belongs all glory forever. But can anyone boast that he has preserved Chrismation and Baptism—the white garment of Baptism and the seal of the Holy Spirit?
Has anyone kept them pure and unstained? Can anyone boast of that, my dear friends?
For this reason, God gave us the Mystery of Confession. Yet we must not misuse this Mystery. We must not forget that it is a second Mystery. Listen carefully: what do I mean by “misuse”? I do not mean that we should not confess frequently. I mean that we must not stain and dishonor Holy Baptism by saying, “Well, we have Confession.” No. That way of thinking is not right. God sees the ulterior motive behind it: that we think we can sin and be careless because we have Confession. This is not right. Indeed!
In His love, God gave us what is called a second Baptism: the Mystery of Holy Confession. If we have a true sense of honor and gratitude, then of course, being human, we will make use of it; but we must not say, “Well, now we have this, so everything is taken care of.” No, no. By sinning, we also dishonor Chrismation—that is, the Holy Spirit. Does not the Apostle Paul say, “And do not grieve...” You know, Holy Scripture expresses the same truths in different ways. “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
You have been sealed by Him: this is the seal of the Holy Spirit. Do not grieve Him. Why? Because when we sin, we grieve the Holy Spirit. Elsewhere it says, “Do not quench the Spirit”—do not extinguish the Holy Spirit. In other words, it presents the Holy Spirit as a burning lamp. And from Pentecost we know that the Spirit of God appeared as fire. Therefore, do not quench the Holy Spirit. How is the Holy Spirit quenched? When we sin. For this reason, my dear friends, we must take care not to sin.
Our bodies were anointed, and our souls were anointed spiritually as well. As I told you on another recent occasion, the Holy Spirit does not dwell only in our souls. He also dwells in our bodies. For the Apostle says, “Do you not know that your bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit?” I told you this last Monday. Therefore, we must take care not to stain the garment of Baptism, nor to grieve the Holy Spirit and cause Him, so to speak, to withdraw—forgive me, to depart. Or, to speak more precisely...
...we render Him inactive within us. Do you think it is to our benefit to be deprived of the Spirit of God? It is a dreadful thing, truly dreadful, because the Spirit of God gives us every good thing, every spiritual blessing. If only we could understand what it means to say, “I have the Spirit of God”! If only we could grasp this one day! There is also a well-known Latin saying: “If you want peace, prepare for war.” If we want the Holy Spirit to remain within our being, we must make progress; we must continually advance. Progress is the surest way to preserve what we have. Let me give you another example. The best way not to become poor is to keep adding new gains to your income. That is an economic principle. Do you not want to become poor? Then you must keep adding, continually increasing and storing up. In the same way, do you not want to lose the Spirit of God? If you remain fixed in one condition, you will stagnate. Progress is necessary—continual progress. This is why Saint Cyril says here, “advancing through good works.”
So we must keep progressing and ascending, so that we do not begin to descend. A person cannot remain in a static condition. Even if he merely wishes to preserve what he already has, he must continue moving forward. Otherwise, if he stops, he will begin to slide downward, and then he will lose everything. Saint Cyril also offers a doxology to our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom he has been speaking: “Becoming,” he says, “well pleasing to the author of our salvation.” You know, this is written in the Epistle to the Hebrews, in the second chapter: the author of our salvation, Jesus Christ...
...to whom belongs glory forever. And so we too have completed this Third Catechesis, concerning Holy Chrismation. I believe you have been pleased with what Saint Cyril has written for us. Indeed, at this point I must thank and commend you as well. Since yesterday and since last Sunday, I have been telling you to come because we would be speaking about the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, and you have filled the church so completely that some people are standing. I commend you for this, and I am truly delighted. So, with God’s help, we now pass to the Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis. As you know, Saint Cyril...
...began each catechesis by reading a passage from Holy Scripture. Here too the title says: “A reading from the Epistle to the Corinthians: ‘For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you,’” and so forth. Yes, these words are written in the First Epistle to the Corinthians, in the eleventh chapter, where there is an extensive and fairly detailed account of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. You see that the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is described not only by the holy Evangelists, but also as a historical event by the Apostle Paul. This is why he says, “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you.” I received it from the Lord. Did Paul receive it directly from the Lord? Yes, indeed. We discussed this in our study of Acts: Paul is not a second-rank Apostle. He did not receive his teaching from the Apostles, because then he would not be called an Apostle but an Apostolic Father, as we speak of the Apostolic Fathers. Saint Ignatius of Antioch received the teaching from the Apostles and is called an Apostolic Father. The same is true of Saint Polycarp of Smyrna, and so forth. Therefore, the Apostle Paul is not second-rank but first-rank. For you remember what the Lord had said...
...to Ananias when he was about to go and find Paul, who was still blind.
“What happened? What happened?” The Lord said to Ananias, “Take care: you are only to baptize him and open his eyes—that is, place your hand upon his eyes, and he will be healed. Only that. As for what he will do, what he will say, and what he will teach: ‘He is a chosen vessel for Me,’ says the Lord, ‘whom I shall send to the nations,’ says Christ. ‘I Myself shall teach him.’” It is perfectly clear that Paul is a first-rank Apostle. Nevertheless, the Apostle Paul does not despise the Tradition of the Church. And when he says, “For I received from the Lord...”
...he continues, “What I received, I also delivered to you.” This is the Tradition of the Church. The Apostle Paul refers not only here but in many other places to the Tradition of the Church, which is none other than the tradition of the Twelve Apostles. Thus, as a first-rank Apostle, he receives from the Lord and then delivers what he has received; yet, as I told you, he does not disregard the Tradition of the Church. So that we are not delayed, you may read this passage at home. It is extremely interesting. Paul uses almost word for word the same account written by the holy Evangelists.
On the night when the Lord was betrayed, Paul says, He took bread—“having taken bread,” and so on. You can read all of that there. Now we shall begin Saint Cyril’s catechesis and hear exactly what he says to his newly baptized, to those who have been illumined. This is the first paragraph: “This teaching of blessed Paul is itself sufficient to assure us concerning the divine Mysteries, of which you were counted worthy, having become one body and one blood with Christ.” And so, he says, this teaching of blessed Paul...
is sufficient to assure you concerning the divine Mysteries of which you have been counted worthy—that is, you received Holy Communion. For we must not forget that immediately after Baptism, those who had been baptized received Holy Communion, because Baptism was joined to the Divine Liturgy. That is why they communed. But unfortunately, because our worldly way of thinking wanted to celebrate the occasion in a worldly manner, little by little we separated the Mystery of Baptism from the Divine Liturgy, just as we also separated Holy Matrimony from it. That is the tragedy. Yet traces remain, showing that these two Mysteries were once incorporated into the Divine Liturgy.
Both Mysteries begin with the words, “Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” and so forth. But that is how the Divine Liturgy begins, whereas the other Mysteries begin with, “Blessed is our God,” not, “Blessed is the Kingdom.” And if you want another indication, the little table we bring out for Holy Matrimony has taken the place of the Holy Table. That is why we place the Gospel upon the wedding table: we have, as it were, brought the Holy Table outside the altar. These are surviving traces, remnants that show where these two Mysteries once had their place. Thus, those who were to be baptized were also at the same time to...
receive Holy Communion. Today, if a child is baptized on Sunday, we give the child Holy Communion the following Sunday, whereas the child ought to commune immediately after Baptism. But now baptisms are held in the afternoon, and after baptisms or weddings we go off to take photographs...
then we go to reception halls, hold our banquets there, dance, play musical instruments, and do many other things. I have told you before, but it does no harm to say it again: Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain says in his Christoethia that these instruments, music, and dances offend the Mystery both of Holy Matrimony and of Baptism. What would you say to that?
Thank you. What would you say, my beloved? What can I tell you? These are not my own words. I have the testimonies, and I present them to you. But what do you mean, “but”? How should I know? “But...” What “but”? There is nothing more to say. So, I return to our subject, where he says: you were counted worthy to receive Holy Communion...
Forgive me—yes, everyone...
“Of the Mysteries of which you were counted worthy”—the question is, which Mysteries?—“having become one body and one blood with Christ through the Body and Blood of Christ. For he has just proclaimed: ‘On the night when our Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed, having taken bread...’ ‘and having given thanks,’ and so forth.” Let us dwell on two words: “one body” and “one blood.” These two words express the depth of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—or, more precisely, they express the result of that profound Mystery. He says that the one who receives Holy Communion has become one body with Christ and one blood with Christ. When we commune, we say that we have received Christ. A more precise way of putting it is...
that Christ has taken us into Himself. Christ did not become a member of us; rather, we became members of Christ. Therefore, it is not simply that we received Him; Christ received us into Himself. Yet it is not wrong to say what Christ Himself said: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood.” This was the supremely important teaching He gave to the people of Capernaum after the miracle of feeding the five thousand. His saying seemed hard to them because their understanding was so gross and earthbound.
Being thoroughly materialistic, they could not grasp the spiritual meaning of the Lord’s words: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” He abides within Me—this is what I said earlier, that we become members of the Body of Christ—but I also abide in him. What does this mean? Here we have a mutual indwelling, something our minds cannot comprehend. How can I contain something while also being contained by it? How can what is contained become that which contains? We say that a cup contains water. But how can the water now contain the cup?
Can we comprehend this even as an image or a figure of speech? We cannot. Yet this is precisely what the Lord wished to say: that there is this mutual indwelling. Each is within the other: you are in Me, and I am in you. And what is astonishing is that all the faithful are within the Body of Christ—all the faithful. That is why we are incorporated into one Body and cannot disregard one another. Instead, we call the other person our brother and have a special awareness of him, because we are all incorporated into the Body of Christ. There we all dwell; there we all meet.
My beloved, do we grasp what this means? A Christian who receives Holy Communion is not a stranger. All together are members of Christ. It is astonishing. I think I have told you this before—or perhaps I said it somewhere else; I do not remember—but I will tell you now. If I have not already said it elsewhere, I probably have. When I am here in Larissa and do not have all the icons that I have in my cell, and I say the dismissal hymn of each Saint, this is what I do. For example, here in Larissa I say the dismissal hymn of Saint Achillios, but I do not have an icon of Saint Achillios, Mr. Chostokylis.
I say the dismissal hymn and address it to the Saint; but as I cense, since I do not have his icon, I look toward the icon of Christ and cense the icon of Christ. Why? Because Saint Achillios has been incorporated into Christ. Therefore, when we address a Saint, that Saint is, in reality—and how could it be otherwise?—incorporated into Christ. In other words, he is in the Church. The Church is the Body of Christ. This is not merely a figure of speech, but a reality. It is not an allegory, but a reality. Let us pay very close attention to this point.
That is why anyone who offends—or, forgive me, who sins—offends the Body of Christ, the Church. We have a particular example of this in divorce. Two people have entered Holy Matrimony. But what does that mean? It means that they have fulfilled more than merely a biological condition. In the Mystery, they are truly one body. Naturally, they remain two distinct human beings. If one becomes ill, the other does not also become ill simply because they are one body in this sense. Yet mystically, through the Mystery, they are one body—one body. “And the two shall become one flesh.” But we forget...
Holy Matrimony expresses another Mystery: the Mystery of the Church, the union of Christ and the Church. Therefore, the one who divorces first of all commits adultery. This is a terrible thing, an exceedingly terrible thing. Such a person openly offends the great Mystery. For when the Apostle Paul speaks of the great Mystery, he says, “I am not speaking about this mystery.” Which one does he mean? Not the union in Holy Matrimony of two human beings, but the Mystery of the union of Christ and the Church. “It is great.” Therefore, the Mystery of Holy Matrimony between two people expresses the great Mystery of the union of Christ and the Church. Thus, when adultery or divorce occurs, the Church is offended. For this reason...
we must be careful in this matter, my beloved. It is a very delicate matter, very delicate indeed. Husband and wife must have peace and love, and so forth. As the Apostle Paul says, Christ nourishes and cherishes the Church; He gave His Blood and His Body and thereby formed the Church, and so forth. In the same way, the husband must act toward his wife; and, in turn, the wife owes obedience to her husband, just as the Church owes obedience to Christ. And Christ is—there is no need to look far, for we say it and you all know it—the Bridegroom of the Church. Christ is the Bridegroom. That is why in Holy Week we have the services known as the Bridegroom Services. Therefore...
there we dwell, within the Body of Christ. And the holy relics that we have upon the Holy Table, or anywhere else, are incorporated into the Body of Christ. I believe I told you this as well, perhaps last time. Now, what more do the words “one body” and “one blood” mean? For everything I have been saying expresses this reality of being one body and one blood. How are we to understand being one body? If I have been united with Christ, can I become estranged from Him? If I have been united with Him, who can separate me from Him again? Absolutely nothing—nothing except denial.
No external powers—whether demonic, angelic, or human—can separate the faithful from Christ. This is expressed in those beautiful words of the Apostle Paul in Romans: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” He then gives a whole list of things that might supposedly separate the faithful from Christ. Nothing can. And it is not merely that we cannot be separated from His love, but that we have become one body with Him. Saint Nicholas Cabasilas says...
Our clothes can be stripped from us, even though our clothes are, of course, in direct contact with our bodies and in some sense belong to us. Yet they can be taken from us. Even our skin can be stripped away. We know of martyrs who were flayed alive. Saint Charalambos was flayed. They can tear the skin from us by flaying us; all these things they can do.
Or they can cut off members of our body—hands and feet—or put out our eyes, as happened to Saint Germanos. The Annunciation. If I put a spoonful of sugar into a glass of water, the sugar dissolves and disappears into it; it does not settle at the bottom. Yet through evaporation, I can recover the sugar. I may have a mechanical union, or I may have a chemical union. None of these examples expresses our union with Christ. That union is something far deeper and far more mysterious. How profound it is! When a person dies, Christ remains united with his bones in the grave—or, more precisely, with his body—and He is united with his soul in Paradise, as is the Holy Spirit. I have told you this as well.
As I was telling you last time, in the section on the Mystery, here in the Mystagogical Catechesis on Holy Chrismation, the Spirit of God remains with the person and is united to the one in whose body He has come to dwell. In the same way, Christ too—pay attention to this—is united with that person. This is why, when we are already approaching death, we hasten to receive Holy Communion one last time. That is the reason. Of course, this should not be the first time in our life that we receive Communion, just before death. As for that, I do not know—well, I had better say no more.
In any case, we must receive Holy Communion continually, and when we do, we must be conscious that we are united with Christ. John Chrysostom says: You see that Lazarus was received by angels. Which Lazarus? The poor Lazarus in the parable. Why? Was not one angel enough to lead him where he was to go? It was done to honor him. When we receive Holy Communion, it is not merely an angel, but angels, who receive us. They do so in honor of the Lord’s Body, the Body of Christ that we received in Holy Communion. You see, then, that this union of ours endures in the grave,
and in Paradise, so that we may understand how profound this union is. Only one thing severs it: denial. When someone denies Christ, Christ departs. Then separation takes place. This is why we must receive Holy Communion regularly—very regularly, indeed, as often as possible. There is a question that is sometimes raised. I may as well mention it now, though I was going to address it next week: Why, they ask, did Constantine the Great receive Communion shortly before his death? Forgive me—I mean, why was he baptized shortly before his death?
I will explain the historical background. This does not concern Constantine the Great alone. Saint Basil the Great himself was baptized at about thirty years of age. His sister, Saint Macrina, kept pleading with him to be baptized, but he would not do so. You see, there was a custom at the time of postponing Baptism for as long as possible, so as not to sin afterward. This is what I mentioned at the beginning: that we must not soil the baptismal garment. But delaying Baptism is not right. You may say that it was a custom of the age, but it was a custom opposed by John Chrysostom.
That is why Saint Macrina kept pleading with Basil. In the end, he was not baptized just before his death, but at the age of thirty. John Chrysostom says that the hour when you are dying is not the time to be baptized and receive Holy Communion. That is not the hour for the Mysteries; it is the hour for wills—the time to make your will, not the time to be baptized and receive Communion. Thankfully, this attitude eventually disappeared from the Church: the practice of being baptized shortly before death came to an end. For by delaying, a person deprived himself of the Body and Blood of Christ. And if, let us suppose, he died suddenly, then would he not have suffered eternal loss?
That answers this question as well, so that I need not answer it next Monday. And let us understand that we must receive Holy Communion so that we may become one body and one blood with Christ—His fellow members in body and blood. “For he has just proclaimed.” Who is “he”? The Apostle Paul, who writes in First Corinthians that “on the night when our Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed, He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it”
to His own disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is My Body.” Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take, drink; this is My Blood.”
The Apostle reminds us that the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist was handed down on the very night when the Lord was handed over to the Jews. “On the night when He was betrayed”—when He was handed over. Yes, this is the familiar Mystical Supper. If you ask what “Mystical Supper” means, does it mean that it took place in some secret, hidden place? No. It is called mystical for the same reason that Saint Cyril’s catecheses are called mystagogical. It is not because these things were hidden. Rather, on that evening, at that supper, the disciples—for the first time after three years with their Teacher—were to become partakers of Him, partakers of Him as never before. During all the preceding time they had been beside Jesus. But that evening they were to be incorporated into Christ. Thus “mystical” means “unitive.” That is what “mystical” means: bringing about union. The same meaning is found in “mystagogy” and “mystagogue,” one who initiates another into what is called a Mystery, and so forth. This is what “mystical” means: unitive.
For the first time, I repeat, the Apostles experienced Christ through His Body and His Blood. What did the Lord do? “He took bread and gave thanks,” and so forth. He took bread—ordinary bread. Let me make one small observation, simply as a brief aside. What kind of bread did He take, leavened or unleavened? Since we stand at the threshold of the European Economic Community and many curious and strange things will be coming our way, you should know this as well. Roman Catholics use unleavened bread. No, my dear friends, the bread was not unleavened. The ancient Tradition of our Church has preserved the use of leavened bread. You may say this is a detail. No, it is not a detail, and I shall explain why at once. The Jewish Passover began on Friday at sunset and continued into Saturday, the great day of the Sabbath, as the holy Evangelists tell us—the great Sabbath day, the Passover. It was a double feast: first, because it was the Sabbath, and second, because it was Passover. Of course, Passover did not always fall on a Saturday. But as you know, we have what are called movable feasts, so that Pascha will always fall on a Sunday. Now pay attention.
When did the Passover begin? On the preceding day, Friday. That is why Friday in Greek is called Paraskevi, meaning preparation: preparation beforehand. At that time they took the lambs that were to be sacrificed. The slaughter had to begin at three in the afternoon—I emphasize, three in the afternoon—and continue until six in the evening, during that three-hour period.
The people would take their lambs back home and roast them on a spit, without breaking a bone. It was a ritual meal, at which they also had to eat bitter herbs and unleavened bread. The slaughter began at three in the afternoon.
At three in the afternoon the Lord gave up His spirit to the Father, and He was the true Lamb. All the other lambs were antitypes—figures pointing to Him. That Passover was no longer the Passover of the Jews. It was not, because the true Lamb had already been sacrificed upon the Cross. As for the bitter herbs, the meal, and the roasted lamb, you know that they had to eat the lamb by morning. Whatever remained had to be burned. For that ritual supper was a sacred rite, just as the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is both a sacred rite and a Mystery. Therefore, everything had to be observed in this way, and the bread had to be unleavened. And not only that...
They ate unleavened bread throughout the entire week, until the conclusion of the Passover one week later, and they had to remove every trace of leaven from their homes. Why? Because leaven symbolized the world and worldliness, while unleavened bread symbolized the people of God. Why was this so? The Apostle Paul also mentions it, if I remember correctly, in his Epistle to the Corinthians. We all know what leaven does. We put it into the flour mixture—the Greek term means the mixture of water and flour—and the leaven causes the whole mixture to rise. Then this happens: the bread swells. But when we say that it swells, we mean that it undergoes change.
The world is changeable. The people of God are steadfast; they do not change. That is why unleavened bread was required. But when Christ celebrated His Mystical Supper, it was one day—one evening—earlier, because He Himself was to be the Lamb offered in sacrifice. As I told you before, He died upon the Cross at three o’clock. Since the Supper took place a day earlier, He was not eating unleavened bread, but leavened bread. Therefore, when Christ took bread from the table, it was leavened. Keep that in mind. I now close this parenthesis. So, it says that He took bread: “He took bread and gave thanks.”
What does this mean? He offered prayer to the Father, “broke it, and gave it to His disciples.” The Greek verb used here means “to break.” From it come the words for a broken piece and for a fraction. A fraction is what results when we divide a whole into pieces. One-half, for example, is a fraction because the whole has been divided. This verb differs from the verb meaning “to cut.” Cutting involves the use of a knife, but breaking does not; it is done with the hands. In other words, the Lord broke the bread with His hands.
This is very significant. As I have told you, every word carries weight—every word. That is why, when we divide the Lamb upon the Holy Diskos, we are forbidden to use a knife. We divide it with our hands. In earlier times, its distribution among the clergy and the people was also carried out by breaking it with the hands—with the hands.
Who took the bread and broke it? Thus, He broke it with His hands, after first “giving thanks,” that is, after offering prayer to the Father. Why is this Mystery called the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist? Because the Lord gave thanks. What does it mean that He gave thanks?
His prayer was a prayer of thanksgiving, because He had reached the appointed moment. Christ’s meaning was this: “I have come, O My Father, to this moment in time when I thank You, because the hour has come for Me to give the flesh that I received from the Virgin Mary—the flesh that the Holy Spirit formed for Me—to those whom I have loved, to My disciples, and through My disciples to all the faithful of every age and every generation.” The Holy Eucharist, the Mystery of Holy Communion, is therefore thanksgiving.
After this, “He gave it to His own disciples,” saying, “Take, eat; this is My Body.” Take and eat: this is My Body. It is therefore His Body. It is no longer bread; it has become His Body. And when did it become His Body? After the thanksgiving to the Father, that is, after the prayer. This is why we too offer the prayer after reciting the words by which the Mystery was instituted: the words concerning Jesus, “who, when He was given up,” and “having taken bread,” followed by “having taken the cup,” and so forth. Then we pray to God the Father
to send down His Holy Spirit and change the bread into the Body of Christ. We ask the Father to send His Holy Spirit to change the bread into the Body of Christ, and likewise the wine into the Blood of Christ. I shall say it a third time.
We ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit and change it into the Body of Christ. “And make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ,” after He has sent the Holy Spirit. “Send down Your Holy Spirit,” changing by Your Holy Spirit the Gifts set before You into the Body and Blood of Christ.
This is precisely the same act as the Incarnation of God the Word (Logos) in the womb of the Theotokos—exactly the same, wholly identical. What does the angel say there? “The power of the Most High will overshadow you.” What is the power of the Most High? The Most High is the Father, and the power of the Most High is the Son. The Son is called the power of the Father. “And the Holy Spirit will come upon you,” and so forth. Thus, all three Persons take part in the Incarnation. What happened in the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), then, happens in exactly the same way at every Divine Liturgy: the Spirit of God comes, sent by the Father, to make the bread the flesh of His Son.
It is astounding, but...
“Take”—come and receive, if you wish to receive. The question arises: Did Judas receive Holy Communion? We do not know. There are differing opinions, both among the Fathers and among later writers. Did Judas receive Holy Communion or not? Did he leave before the Mystery was celebrated? We do not know. Only this much can be said: if Judas did not receive, he was unworthy and did not consider himself worthy. But if he did receive, then instead of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, do you know what he received?
John the Evangelist says that as soon as Judas took the bread the Lord gave him—not His Body, but bread from the dish, which He dipped into the sauce and gave to him—Satan entered into him. That is why those who receive Holy Communion when they ought not may become possessed by demons. I am not the one saying this; the word of God says it. And then our liturgical practice says, “Let it not be unto judgment or condemnation.” Do we not say these prayers? May it not bring judgment and condemnation. And what is that condemnation? Rejection by Christ. And when Christ rejects someone, the devil takes possession. My dear friends, this is a very grave matter.
First, I pray that, God willing, we may all be together again next Monday to hear the continuation of this subject.

«Οίνον πίονται, ευφροσύνην πίονται, χρίσονται μύρον». Θα πιουν κρασί, θα πιουν την ευφροσύνη, τη χαρά, και θα χριστούν το μύρον. Αυτό είναι πάλι στον Ησαΐα, στο 25ο κεφάλαιο, στον 6ο στίχο. «Και ίνα ασφαλώς ειδής, ακούων περί του μύρου τούτου ως μυστικού, φησί· παράδος ταύτα πάντα τοις έθνεσιν· η γαρ βουλή Κυρίου επί πάντα τα έθνη». Τι λέγει τώρα αυτή η νέα σημείωση, πάλι από τον Ησαΐα, από το αυτό σημείο, 25ο κεφάλαιο, στίχος 7, ο επόμενος στίχος;
Μώμος, που θα πει κατηγορία, χωρίς κατηγορία. Και τούτο θα το επιτύχετε «προκόπτοντες δι’ έργων αγαθών», με το να κάνετε έργα αγαθά. Και ακόμη, γινόμενοι ευάρεστοι εις τον αρχηγό της σωτηρίας μας, τον Ιησού Χριστό, που του ανήκει κάθε δόξα αιωνίως. Πράγματι, μπορεί κανείς να καυχηθεί ότι ετήρησε το χρίσμα, το βάπτισμα και το χρίσμα, τον λευκόν χιτώνα του βαπτίσματος και την σφραγίδα του Αγίου Πνεύματος;
σε κέντρα και κάνουμε εκεί τα τραπέζια μας, χορεύουμε, όργανα και άλλα πολλά. Σας έχω πει, δεν πειράζει να το ξαναπώ, λέγει ο Άγιος Νικόδημος ο Αγιορείτης στη Χριστοήθεια ότι αυτά τα όργανα και οι μουσικές και οι χοροί προσβάλλουν το μυστήριον και του γάμου και της βαπτίσεως. Τι θα είχατε να πείτε;
Δεν μπορούσαν, και οι υλιστικότατοι, να αντιληφθούν την πνευματικότητα των λόγων του Κυρίου. «Ὁ τρώγων μου τὴν σάρκα καὶ πίνων μου τὸ αἷμα, ἐν ἐμοὶ μένει κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ». Εκείνος μένει μέσα σε μένα, αυτό που είπα προηγουμένως, ότι γινόμεθα μέλη του σώματος του Χριστού, αλλά και εγώ μένω εις αυτόν. Συνεπώς, εδώ τι σημαίνει; Έχουμε μία αλληλοπεριχώρηση. Κάτι που δεν μπορούμε να το συλλάβουμε νοητικά. Πώς, όταν περιέχω, περιέχομαι; Πώς το περιεχόμενο γίνεται περιέχον; Λέμε: το ποτήρι περιέχει το νερό. Πώς όμως τώρα το νερό μπορεί να περιέχει το ποτήρι;
Ποιος πήρε το ψωμί και το έκοψε; Κλάω-κλώ, λοιπόν, αφού προηγουμένως «εὐχαριστήσας», δηλαδή έκανε προσευχή προς τον Πατέρα. Γιατί λέγεται το μυστήριον, μυστήριον Θείας Ευχαριστίας; Γιατί ο Κύριος ευχαρίστησεν. Τι θα πει ευχαρίστησεν;
«Λάβετε», ελάτε να πάρετε, εάν θέλετε να πάρετε. Υπάρχει το ερώτημα: ο Ιούδας εκοινώνησε; Δεν το ξέρουμε. Υπάρχουν διάφορες γνώμες και Πατέρων και νεωτέρων. Ο Ιούδας κοινώνησε ή δεν κοινώνησε; Έφυγε προ της τελέσεως του μυστηρίου; Δεν το ξέρουμε. Ένα μόνο: ότι, αν ο Ιούδας δεν κοινώνησε, δεν του ήξιζε, δεν αισθάνθηκε άξιος. Εάν κοινώνησε, τότε, αντί να πάρει το σώμα και το αίμα του Χριστού, ξέρετε τι πήρε;
