Summary

Saint Cyril teaches that Chrismation communicates the Holy Spirit through Holy Myron, granting divine gifts, regeneration, adoption, and strength for spiritual life. The washings and anointings of Aaron and Solomon prefigure the Christian order of Baptism followed by Chrismation. The Holy Spirit works like leaven within the believer, transforming the whole person into someone genuinely spiritual.

My beloved, we are still in Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Third Mystagogical Catechesis, in the third paragraph—pardon me, in the fifth paragraph. The Third Mystagogical Catechesis, of course, concerns the Mystery of Chrismation. We have already discussed important things, very important things. Saint Cyril tells us that Chrismation is nothing less than the presence of the Holy Spirit. In truth, the Holy Spirit anoints us through a material means: Holy Myron.

He gave us this marvelous statement: “Through the presence of the Holy Spirit, it becomes effective by His divinity.” This is astonishing: through a material means, I can receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, regeneration, adoption as a child of God, and all the other gifts and possibilities granted by the Spirit of God—even the attainment of the spiritual life—because I have received Chrismation, that is, the Holy Spirit. John the Evangelist says in his epistles that there is no need for anyone to teach you. You have God’s anointing, and that anointing will teach you all things.

We see, beloved, how exceedingly important the Holy Spirit is, and that He is given to us through the Mystery of Chrismation. You may ask why it must happen in this way, through a material means. Saint Cyril has already referred us to what the Apostle Peter says in one of his sermons: that God—the Father—anointed Jesus the Son with the Holy Spirit. And last time we saw that Christ was anointed noetically with the Holy Spirit. He had no need of oil.

Could this not also happen with us? But notice why it does not. First, there must be a distinction between the One who is uniquely the Son of God—the Son by nature, who is God and became man—and us, who are likewise called children of God, but are so by grace. The Son is uncreated; we are created. The Son’s human nature is, of course, created, but as God He is uncreated. Therefore, He receives the Holy Spirit in His human nature without the mediation of any material means.

That material means is myron, the myron familiar to us, the oil. Why, then, is it used for us? Here is the second reason. It is not only that we must distinguish between what belongs by nature and what is bestowed by grace—we are children of God by grace, while He is the Son by nature. It is also because God—and what I am about to tell you is very important—does not wish to set aside His material creation. This is tremendously important. It is a forceful answer to those who, in the name of a supposedly higher spirituality, abhor the material element and cast it aside. Let us not forget that

only heretics have done this. Gnosticism largely served this position by teaching a dualism in which only the realm of spirit, ideas, or idealism is retained, while matter is disparaged. Pay close attention to this. The rejection of matter is also the rejection of the body, even though the body will be raised. I deliberately repeat it: the rejection of the body and the rejection of matter are demonic teachings. This is why the Apostle Paul says that people will give heed to doctrines of demons.

This, too, is one of those demonic teachings: that we should cast matter aside. Someone says to you, “Why do you need an icon? Can you not worship God without an icon? Why do you need an oil lamp? Why do you need Holy Unction? Why do you need this or that? Go directly to God. Why do you need a priest?” This is what Protestantism says. “Why do you need a mediator? Why do you need the Saints? Why do you need holy relics?” and so forth. This is a demonic teaching. I shall give you just one example, and it will convince you. Was it not God who caused the Red Sea to open

so that His people could pass through? Certainly it was God. Yet what did He say to Moses? “What are you holding?” How many times did He ask him, “What are you holding?” Moses held a shepherd’s staff, the staff he had carried while tending the sheep of his father-in-law Jethro in the Arabian wilderness near Sinai. God told him, “With this staff of yours”—the same staff, you know, through which He had brought the ten plagues upon the Egyptians—“you shall strike the sea.” After striking it—on the sand, on the seashore, of course—the sea would open and draw back, and they would pass through. Then, after they had crossed, God said, “Strike the sea again with your staff,” and the sea closed. Tell me, why did God not simply command the sea directly to open and close? Why did He tell Moses to use what was, after all, merely a shepherd’s crook, a staff, a stick? Because God willed the miracle to take place through a material means, namely Moses’ shepherd’s staff. In the same way, God wills that our sins be forgiven,

that we be regenerated, and that our adoption as His children be sealed. And do you know through what means? Through the water in the baptismal font. This is how God wills it. Ultimately, even if we did not understand it, we would have to say that this is how God wills it. But we do understand, because God does not exclude the material element from salvation. After all, the Son of God became man and clothed Himself in matter. Consequently, it is through this matter—that is, through Christ’s human nature—that we are saved. How is it possible that by eating the Body and Blood of Christ under the forms of bread and wine—as we shall see later in the Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis—I receive eternal life?

God wills it so. I am saved in this way, through matter. Therefore, those who cast aside even Christ’s human nature hold to a demonic teaching. Jehovah’s Witnesses, for example, say that Christ cast off His body and is now in Heaven as a spirit. Quite apart from the fact that they do not accept the divine nature of Jesus Christ, they regard Him as only a spirit. Do you know what the Apostle Paul calls this? The worship of angels. The worship of angels is a heretical and Gnostic doctrine—a doctrine of demons. Please pay careful attention to all these things. He says, “The blessing of water.”

Sprinkle with the basil sprig at the blessing of water; guard and seal with the Cross. The Cross itself is made of matter, yet the demons see it and flee. Do you want still more evidence? Do you need any more? There you have it, beloved: the material element is important. Thus, through an oil composed of many fragrances—Holy Myron—we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit Himself, who strengthens and helps us and becomes the chief power of the spiritual life. I hope that we may gain a deep understanding of this. Take heed: the theology of matter is of the utmost importance.

It is of the utmost importance, and matter is not to be rejected. Plato rejected matter. Therefore, when Platonism entered Christian teaching—and how did it enter? It did enter—those who studied philosophy were not careful. Without realizing it, they embraced something of Platonic philosophy, and they went astray. Did you hear that? They went astray. It is a danger, a great danger. Ultimately, Plato himself is not to blame, because he lived before Christ and did not understand many things. What could he have understood? He regarded matter as something evil. But matter has a tremendously important place in our salvation.

This is exceedingly important; I emphasize it especially. And now, as I told you, we come to the fifth paragraph of the Third Mystagogical Catechesis. Saint Cyril says: “Having been counted worthy of this Holy Chrismation, you are called Christians, and through your regeneration you confirm the truth of that name.” In other words, since you have received this Holy Chrismation, you have been counted worthy to be called Christians. And through your regeneration—“through regeneration”—your name is shown to be true.

At first glance, this seems slightly different from the idea that we are called Christians because Jesus was the Christ. We are told, after all, that in Antioch the disciples were called Christians—we have already discussed this subject—and that this name was eventually accepted. Yet the name was not given by the Church. It was given by those outside the Church, the idolaters, and it was originally used mockingly against the Christians. Nevertheless, the name became established and is now a sacred name.

Here Saint Cyril tells us that we received the name Christian not from Christ, but from the chrism, from the anointing we received—the chrism, with an i—which is the anointing of the Holy Spirit. He says that we are called Christians because we confirm the truth of the name. How do we confirm it? Through our spiritual regeneration, through receiving Chrismation. Yet this does not differ from saying that we received our name from Christ. Though Saint Cyril introduces a distinction here, there is no real difference, for the following reason. You will see that the two explanations only appear to differ. Why is Jesus called Christ?

Because He received the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Thus, whether I receive the Holy Spirit directly through being anointed and am therefore called a Christian, or whether I receive the name indirectly because Jesus was anointed and is the Christ, I receive the name Christian for the same reason. It is the same reality, arising from the same source and foundation. Yet Saint Cyril’s distinction is beautiful, because it reveals the regenerated person, the new person, who must unquestionably prove worthy of the name he has received through being baptized and receiving the Mystery of Chrismation. He must truly be a spiritual person, not someone empty and hollow.

Not an empty tin can. It is a terrible thing—truly terrible—for someone to have to say to you, “Man, what has become of your name, which you have so deeply dishonored?” An example comes to mind. Alexander the Great once had a Macedonian soldier—a Greek—who was also named Alexander. In one battle this soldier named Alexander showed cowardice. They brought him before Alexander the Great and reported that he had acted cowardly. Alexander the Great told him, “You cannot be a coward; you must be courageous. Either become courageous or change your name.”

“I cannot have a soldier who bears my name and is a coward.” In the same way, Christ could say to us, “I cannot have a believer who bears My name—a Christian—and at the same time throws away his shield like a deserter.” Such a person casts aside his shield; he does not live the spiritual life. Saint Cyril then continues: “Before we were counted worthy of Baptism and of the grace of the Holy Spirit, you were not yet Christians in the proper sense, but were advancing along the way toward becoming Christians.” In other words, before you—who are “you”? Those who had been baptized and were listening to him—

those who had been catechized, baptized, and were now listening to him—before you were counted worthy of Baptism, he says, you were not yet worthy in the proper sense. You were simply journeying toward becoming worthy. “You were advancing along the way toward becoming Christians.” You were on the road to becoming Christians. So, my beloved, listen. We too could say, “I am on the road toward being a Christian.” Yet we should not have to say this, because after Baptism we ought already to be Christians. Nevertheless, since infant Baptism exists, we can say that...

I am on the road to becoming a Christian—not that I already am one in the fullest sense, but that I am becoming one. So if someone reproaches you and says, “And you call yourself a Christian, making great signs of the Cross like that?” your answer should be: “I am not yet fully a Christian; I am becoming one. I am on the road to becoming one. I am still imperfect. You speak this way because you see my imperfection. Thank you for telling me, because you are revealing my imperfection to me.” You may say, “But do you know why the other person says this? He too is baptized, and he is in an even worse condition. He should not say such a thing.” Why not? Again, because he too is baptized. Nevertheless, responding in this way is also an act of humility, and this is how we should understand and express it.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch. Listen now, and you will hear. Who? Saint Ignatius of Antioch. If you read the letters he sent throughout his journey from Antioch to Rome—a journey filled with suffering; I will say no more, because time does not permit—you will see that he wrote them along the way. He wrote them while traveling and sent them to various Churches. In his Letter to the Romans, a wonderful letter, he writes—his letter would reach Rome before he did, because he was traveling under military guard, on foot and at a slow pace—“Now I begin...

“...to be a disciple.” Now, he says, I am beginning to become a Christian. When did he say this? As he was going to martyrdom. Now I am beginning to become a Christian. This is very important. How much more could we say it about ourselves! Saint Cyril is therefore right to say here, “journeying toward becoming Christians.” “You were advancing toward becoming Christians.” The words “to be” are an infinitive: to be Christians. So we journey onward; we keep journeying. The one essential thing is to keep moving and not come to a standstill. For if we stop...

I do not know, my beloved, what may then become of us. We will turn into a bog. Do you know what a bog is? It is muddy ground that looks as though it were merely water. Someone steps onto it and begins to sink. That is called a bog. A Christian who comes to a standstill becomes like a bog and begins to sink.

Paragraph six: “It is necessary for you to know that the symbol of this Chrismation is found in the Old Testament.” Certainly, he says, you must know that a symbol of Chrismation exists in the Old Testament. Let us see what that symbol is. “For when Moses communicated God’s command to his brother, appointing him high priest, he first washed him in water and then anointed him, and he was called Christ.”

This was the typological form of Chrismation. God commanded Moses to appoint his brother Aaron as high priest. Aaron was the first high priest. What happened? First, he says, Moses washed him. Aaron was bathed. Then he anointed him with a special oil, clothed him in the high-priestly vestments, and afterward Aaron was called Christ—the Lord’s Christ, the one anointed by the Lord. He received this title through that typological anointing, through Chrismation as a type and prefiguration. Let us dwell on this for a moment.

What power could these actions have possessed? Where was their power? In the Word of God. God said, “Take your brother and wash him”—meaning a complete bath, not merely washing his head, but bathing his whole body—“then anoint him and put the special vestments on him,” and so forth. And he becomes the Lord’s Christ. Saint Cyril says, however, that this was a type and prefiguration, because every Christian who receives Chrismation is first washed. Where? In the baptismal font, in the Mystery of Baptism. First one is baptized, then chrismated, and only then is one called the Lord’s Christ.

This applies to us as human beings. Do you want to see how? As Saint John says in the Apocalypse, the Christian—or rather, Christians—are a royal priesthood. God makes us kings and priests. Aaron is no longer the priest here; he is the type and prefiguration. Now it is every believer, because God makes us kings and priests. This is in the first chapter of the Apocalypse. Is this not also written in the Old Testament? But take care that we do not fall into the same error as the Protestants. Let no one say, “Well then, I too can go out through the Beautiful Gate, stand there at the Holy Altar, and perform the Mystery.”

The anointing possessed by the priest is particular to his ministry, and this is what we call the special or ordained priesthood, whereas the faithful possess the general or royal priesthood. Quite simply, not all the people were counted worthy to offer sacrifice. It had to be offered by the high priest, specifically from the tribe of Levi. The tribe of Levi was large and numbered thousands of people. Some became envious and said, “Why? Why should priests be appointed only from Aaron’s family, by hereditary right no less, and not from among us as well?” Then, my beloved, God destroyed them.

There were two incidents. In the first, the earth opened and swallowed them. This is not a figure of speech: the earth opened and swallowed them. A chasm opened, and their tents, their families, all of them together, fell into it. How did the chasm open? Through an earthquake. A chasm opened, then. All the people witnessed it, because they had been called to watch. Those men were not laughing then, though the wretched men had laughed before. Moses said, “Now you will see what is about to happen.” It was dreadful! The earth opened, they fell in, and the earth closed again. What an event! It was not metaphorical. And it happened because they too had demanded the right to serve at the altar. Then came the second incident.

They said, “We too will offer incense. Why should only the priests offer incense?” But the Sacred Fire—the fire kindled from heaven—was used for the lamps, the incense, and so forth. These men kindled their own fire and lit the coals. As soon as they had lit the coals and went to offer incense, fire burst forth from within and burned them. Do you know what this fire is called? The Old Testament calls it profane fire. An entire homily could be given on this so-called profane fire, but that would take us far from our subject. What was I trying to tell you?

The general or royal priesthood is one thing, and the special or ordained priesthood is another. We must not erase the distinction between them, as the Protestants do. Yes, then, we are also kings. God, it says, has made us priests and kings—a royal priesthood. “Royal” means kingly, and “priesthood” means the priestly body.

All of us! All of us. A little further on, Saint Cyril will speak to us about Solomon: “In the same way, when Solomon was being raised to the kingship, the high priest anointed him after he had washed at Gihon.” And so forth. Here we now have another instance: kings too were anointed.

They were anointed. Let us continue, my children, with this wonderful spiritual testament. What happened in the case of the king? David is lying in bed and realizes that the hour of his death is approaching. His son Solomon was twelve years old, and David had received God’s command to anoint Solomon as king. He had other children, but God desired Solomon alone. David therefore entrusted the task to the high priest...

...to one of his generals, and to the head of his household—that is, the chief officer of the palace. Three men. The high priest alone would have been sufficient, but there also had to be witnesses. Speaking of witnesses, allow me a brief aside. Those little crosses we pin on people after Baptism are called martyrika, or baptismal witness tokens, if I am not mistaken. What does that mean? They signify the testimony of the people who witnessed the person’s Baptism. They bear witness that the person was baptized. This is important. That is why they are called witness tokens. It is a beautiful name. You see, there are certain things whose origins we often do not know.

That knowledge has been lost. So these three men went to anoint Solomon as king. Where did they go? Saint Cyril says here that they went to Gihon. One manuscript spells the name one way, and another manuscript spells it differently. Gihon was a spring at the foot of Mount Zion. That spring still exists today and is called the Spring of the Theotokos—the Virgin’s Spring, indeed. They went to that spring so that Solomon might be anointed king. How was it done? First he bathed; he was washed. Then they anointed him as king with the Holy Oil that was kept for this purpose.

First he was washed, and then he was anointed. Saint Cyril therefore says, “These things are typological.” First you are baptized, and then you are chrismated. Anointing cannot come before washing—that is, before Baptism. He says, “But these things happened to them typologically.” They happened as types and prefigurations in their cases, because one was a high priest and the other a king. Yet the people too are kings. What did we say? A royal priesthood. We therefore receive Chrismation, and we are...

We are the Lord’s christs—that is, priests; and the Lord’s christs—that is, kings. We are both priests and kings. But how exactly can someone be both priest and king? A king is one who governs. Do not misunderstand my words; pay attention. Of course, one person governs a kingdom. Yet every person who is a priest and king—listen to how the Fathers put it—belongs to the royal priesthood. For Christ was anointed with the Holy Spirit, and Christ is priest according to the order of Melchizedek, King, and Prophet. We too are prophets whenever we proclaim the Word of God.

Whoever proclaims the Word of God is a prophet, because the word “prophet” does not simply mean someone who foretells or predicts the future, but someone who speaks forth. Now, if in speaking he also utters prophecy in the usual sense—that is, if he speaks about things to come—that is another matter and another subject. But a prophet is one who speaks forth. So pay attention. From the moment a person is baptized, he receives Christ’s threefold office: priest, king, and prophet. This is the threefold office of Christ. The king is the one who governs himself.

The governing principle is the nous, the spiritual intellect, and the human person is called to rule over his passions. He must not be a slave to the passions, but their master and king. Second, he is a priest. In one prayer concerning Christ we say, “He who offers and is offered.” This comes shortly before the celebration of the Mystery: “and is distributed,” and so forth. You are the One who offers and is offered. You are both the sacrificer and the sacrifice. The sacrificial victim is called the offering—the lamb offered in sacrifice. “He who offers and is offered.” The believer is likewise both the one who sacrifices and the sacrifice.

He offers and is offered. Who is the one offering? The believer himself. What does he offer? Himself. Where? Upon the spiritual Holy Altar, to God. As the one offering the sacrifice, he offers himself as the sacrifice. This is why the Apostle says in the tenth chapter of Romans, “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your nous...” and so forth. He calls upon each person to offer himself as a sacrifice to God, and the Apostle Paul says that this is the sacrifice most pleasing to God.

So he is both the one who offers the sacrifice and the sacrifice itself, and therefore he is a priest. And he is also a prophet, because he speaks the Word of God. He proclaims the Word of God; he confesses the name of Jesus Christ. He is a prophet—that is, one who speaks. Do not imagine that “speaker” means someone seated at a lectern,

with a little table in front of him, delivering a formal address. Anyone who says, “I believe in Jesus Christ, and I confess the name of Jesus Christ,” is a prophet—that is, one who speaks. You see, then, what beautiful things come from receiving God’s anointing, and who we truly are. This, then, is what he says concerning Aaron,

and also concerning the high priests who succeeded him, and the kings who followed one another in succession. These things, he says, were typological—that is, they were types. But for us, he says, they are not merely typological. Are we only types? For you, he says, these are not typological things, but true and real, because you have been anointed by the Holy—excuse me—by the Holy Spirit. Truly, truly, this is the beginning of our salvation. Our salvation begins there, with Baptism and Chrismation. That is why these are the foundational Mysteries, without which, as you know, we cannot receive Holy Communion. Baptism is called the gate, the passage by which we enter the Church. “For He is truly the firstfruits.” Who is He?

Christ. The Holy Spirit is the leaven, and we are the lump of dough; we shall explain this. “And if the firstfruits are holy,” then holiness will pass into the whole lump. Saint Cyril takes these words from the Apostle Paul, who speaks about leaven and the lump of dough. In ancient Greek, what was called “leaven” meant what we now call sourdough starter. Leaven is what today we call the starter. By contrast, what we now call dough—just water and flour, before the starter has been added—

is what is called the lump of dough.

So the starter—that is, the leaven—is added to the lump of dough, and it leavens it: the process of fermentation takes place throughout the whole lump. The active principle in the leaven passes into the dough, and the entire lump becomes leavened. In the same way, the principle, says the Apostle Paul, is Christ; and, as Saint Cyril explains here, the Holy Spirit leavens the whole lump. Have you received the Spirit of God? Then you will be leavened and transformed.

And you, the lump of dough, will become wholly a spiritual person. This is how a spiritual person comes into being.

Yet we look for the spiritual person apart from the Holy Spirit. Today we call those who devote themselves to learning, literature, poetry, music, or painting “spiritual” people. We speak of the spiritual leadership and the spiritual world. My beloved, we may use the words “spirit” and “spiritual” in this way only loosely, for they refer here to the human spirit. We call someone a spiritual person in the sense that he cultivates his spirit—but it is still the human spirit. When we truly speak of a “spiritual person,” however, we mean someone who becomes what he is, not through his own spirit, but through the Holy Spirit. That is who he is:

a truly spiritual person. Whenever Holy Scripture speaks of the spiritual person, this is always what it means. We must never forget that. Now let us continue. Paragraph seven: “But keep this unspotted, for it will teach you all things, if it abides in you, just as you have recently heard blessed John saying and theologizing at length about the anointing. For this anointing of the Holy Spirit is a safeguard of the body and the salvation of the soul.”

He tells you to keep it unspotted, without stain or blemish. Preserve this Spirit of God, the anointing you receive, because it is this that will teach you all things—provided, of course, that the Holy Spirit remains in you. This is what the phrase means here. You have just heard blessed John the Evangelist speaking about the anointing and reflecting upon it—that is, theologizing about it. For this anointing of the Holy Spirit is a safeguard of the body and the salvation of the soul. So keep it unspotted. My beloved, it is not enough simply to possess Holy Chrismation and Baptism. Saint Cyril will tell us somewhere—or perhaps we have already covered it; forgive me—it is in the next catechesis. Let me read a little:

“He who has put off the old garments and put on those that are spiritually white must remain clothed in white forever.” To be “clothed in white” means to wear white garments. That is why, in older formal Greek, white clothes were called “white garments.” We might speak, for example, of washing the white garments. He is to remain clothed in white forever. We shall return to this, of course, but since we have come across it here: we must always wear white. This does not mean that we must have all our clothes made in white—God forbid! What, then, does it mean? Thank you.

It means that the soul must be clothed in white; the soul must wear white garments. That is why, after Baptism, we place a white robe upon the newly baptized person, as a symbol that he must remain in this state. He must never put off that white robe—the spiritual white robe, of course. This is what Saint Cyril means here. Keep the robe of Baptism and Chrismation unspotted, he says, because this anointing will teach you all things. Learning, as I have often told you, is useful—very useful.

But do you think that learning is ultimately what enables a person to understand? No, he says; it is the Holy Spirit. Concerning Christ—and do not say to me, “But He was Christ.” Yes, but He also possesses human nature; we must not forget that—they said, “How does this man know letters, having never studied?” How does He possess learning when He has never been taught? Surely you cannot imagine that Christ needed to be taught letters. That would be inconceivable. It is good for a believer to be educated. It is necessary for him to study Holy Scripture as well, because we are fallen. But do we receive the true knowledge of God from learning? We receive it from the anointing, from the Holy Spirit. Here is the proof: there are people who are giants of scholarship, yet they cannot understand even the simplest thing about spiritual life. And there are people with little or no education who speak to you and say things that leave you astonished, because they have grasped the meaning of salvation. Truly, then, it is the Holy Spirit who will teach us all things, but only on the condition that we preserve purity.

For example, when children grow and become adolescents, can we say to them, “Come now, as a man you are bound to do this or that”? Whenever I hear someone say such a thing, I ask, “Has this sin perhaps already taken place?” Does being a man mean that you must have done this, that, and the other? It is inconceivable! Yet because we use this argument and try to prove our manhood by doing this and that, we finally reach the point where we no longer understand that we must preserve purity, and we lose everything. We can no longer say that the Spirit of God is at work in our lives. And since I have mentioned this,

and because I dearly love young people and do not want them to suffer harm, let me take one more opportunity to say this: guard your children from sin, especially from sins of the flesh—your sons and your daughters alike. Speak to them gently and with love: “My child, your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.” This is what the Apostle Paul says in the First Epistle to the Corinthians. He does not say merely “a temple of God”; the Holy Spirit is God. He speaks specifically of “a temple of the Holy Spirit” in the sixth chapter. I mention this because our subject here is the Holy Spirit and Chrismation. You cannot, then, surrender your body to every kind of impurity.

I do not have absolute authority over my body. A few years ago, someone had written on the walls of the University of Athens, “We have the right to do whatever we want with our bodies.” This was said especially by young women with reference to sexual relations outside Holy Matrimony. My child, do you truly have the right to do whatever you please with your body? You gave me a newspaper clipping. I have not read it yet because I have had no time, but its title, referring to abortion, is: “Crime or right?” In other words, if I have an abortion, am I committing a crime, or do I have the right to do it? And who told you that you have authority over the child in your womb? Is that child your property? Once conceived, it is no longer you; it is another human being. Understand this, then: you do not have that right. You are committing a crime—a crime. And who told us that our body belongs to us? It was given to us as a temple of the Holy Spirit, in which we must offer sacrifice, as I said earlier, being both those who offer and those who are offered.

When temptations assail your body, you yourself must be the one who offers the sacrifice. You will offer your body as the sacrifice to the Spirit of God, and your body will become a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. No, my beloved, we do not possess absolute rights over our own existence. We must change our understanding of freedom. I could, of course, demonstrate this to you from Holy Scripture. When you stand and say, “I do not want to go to Hell,” do you have the right to decide otherwise? When you say, “I do not want to rise from the dead,” do you have the right to say that? You do not. Please let what I have said give us cause to reconsider our understanding of freedom.

Do not then say to me, “In that case, I am not free.” Freedom has another meaning—not the meaning we imagine, the one we commonly know or misuse. It has a different meaning, but this is not the time to move into other subjects. Saint Cyril now says of the Chrismation—that is, of the Holy Spirit whom you have received: “For this anointing of the Holy Spirit is a safeguard of the body and the salvation of the soul.” It comes to guard

your body spiritually and to bring salvation to your soul. But take careful note!

He says, “a spiritual safeguard of the body.” This means that the Holy Spirit comes to help you preserve your body in a spiritual state. What, then, does “a spiritual safeguard” mean? It means that the Holy Spirit guards you in such a way that you may become a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. This depends upon you; freedom has been given to you, and the choice is yours. But there is something more—something deeper.

Yesterday, in Acts, we heard: “You will not let Your Holy One see corruption.” David says this in the person of Jesus Christ. You will not let Your Holy One, the one devoted to You, see corruption. Where? In the grave. Christ is the prototype; we are the antitypes. Of course, our bodies decay in the grave, but we shall rise again. And when we rise, our body must be spiritual—not our soul, but our body. I stress this because to say otherwise would be false teaching. The Apostle Paul says that we must give an account in our body

before the Judge for everything we have done. If our body has not become spiritual, a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, it cannot enter the Kingdom of God, because it is unfit. Therefore, if our body is to rise to eternal life, it must be a spiritual body. Consider the relics of the Saints.

We, then, must acquire spiritual bodies—not different bodies, lest there be any misunderstanding, but bodies that are dwelling places of the Holy Spirit. And it is also the Spirit of God who brings about the salvation of the soul. Since Saint Cyril speaks in this way, we could put it differently and say that the Holy Spirit preserves the whole human person. He preserves and saves both the body and the soul. Why? Because even after death, when the soul is spiritual—and what does spiritual mean?—when it is united with the Holy Spirit, it is in Paradise. So my body is united with the Spirit of God, and my soul

is united with the Spirit of God. At the universal resurrection, therefore, the Spirit of God will come and reunite them. Then I shall be a spiritual person in the fullest sense. And then I shall not have to give an account as one under judgment or stand accused before the throne of the Judge. So I shall conclude here. The catechesis itself, however, is not yet finished. A short section still remains before, God willing, we move on to the Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis, which concerns the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. We must come to know this Mystery—and know it well. I shall close with the words of Saint Cyril: “Keep this unstained.” Keep Chrismation and Baptism without stain

in both your body and your soul. May the Lord bless you.

να μας αναγεννήσει, να μας επισφραγίσει την υιοθεσία, ξέρετε με τι; Με το νερό, μες στην κολυμβήθρα. Μα έτσι το θέλει ο Θεός, διότι θα το λέγαμε έτσι στο τέλος-τέλος, κι αν δεν το καταλαβαίνουμε, έτσι το θέλει ο Θεός. Αλλά το καταλαβαίνουμε, διότι ο Θεός δεν παραμερίζει το υλικό στοιχείο από τη σωτηρία. Διότι επιτέλους, επιτέλους, ο Υιός του Θεού έγινε άνθρωπος και περιεβλήθη ύλη. Και συνεπώς, δι’ αυτής της ύλης, δηλαδή της ανθρωπίνης φύσεως του Χριστού, εμείς σωζόμαστε. Πώς είναι δυνατόν, τρώγοντας το σώμα και το αίμα του Χριστού υπό τα είδη του Άρτου και του Οίνου — θα δούμε παρακάτω στην Τετάρτη Μυσταγωγική Κατήχηση — να έχω, λέγει, αιώνια ζωή;

Εδώ μας λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος ότι το όνομα Χριστιανός δεν το πήραμε από τον Χριστό, αλλά από το χρίσμα, από τη χρίση, το χρίσμα, γιώτα, που πήραμε, και είναι η χρίσις του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Και λέει εδώ ότι καλούμεθα Χριστιανοί επαληθεύοντες. Τι επαληθεύοντες; Το όνομα με την αναγέννησή μας, την πνευματική, με το να πάρουμε το χρίσμα. Δεν υπάρχει όμως διαφορά, παρότι υπάρχει μια διαφοροποίηση εδώ, με εκείνο που πήραμε το όνομα από τον Χριστό, για τον εξής λόγο. Θα το δείτε ότι μοιάζει ότι διαφέρει· δεν διαφέρει. Ο Ιησούς γιατί λέγεται Χριστός;

Είπαν: «Και εμείς», λέει, «θα θυμιάζουμε. Γιατί μόνο δηλαδή οι ιερείς θα θυμιάζουν;» Αλλά το Ιερόν Πυρ, που άναψε από τον ουρανό αυτή η φωτιά, αυτό χρησιμοποιείτο για τις χρήσεις των κανδηλών, του θυμιάματος κλπ., κλπ. Αυτοί άναψαν φωτιά, άναψαν τα κάρβουνα. Μόλις άναψαν τη φωτιά στα κάρβουνα και πήγαν να θυμιάσουν, πετάχτηκε η φωτιά από μέσα και τους έκαψε. Ξέρετε πώς λέγεται δε αυτό το πυρ; Η Παλαιά Διαθήκη το λέει αυτό κοσμικόν πυρ. Θα μπορούσε να γίνει μια ολόκληρη ομιλία πάνω σε αυτό το λεγόμενο κοσμικό πυρ, αλλά φεύγουμε πολύ από το θέμα μας. Τι ήθελα να σας πω;

Αλλά και στους άλλους αρχιερείς στη συνέχεια. Κατά διαδοχήν, και εις τους άλλους τους βασιλείς κατά διαδοχήν. Ήσαν, λέγει, αυτά τυπικά, δηλαδή τύποι. Σε μας όμως, λέγει, δεν είναι τυπικά. Είμεθα τυπικοί; Σε σας, λέει, δεν είναι τυπικά πράγματα, αλλά αληθώς, είναι πραγματικά, επειδή από του Αγίου —συγγνώμη— από του Αγίου Πνεύματος χρισθέντες. Αληθώς, αληθώς, η αρχή της ημετέρας σωτηρίας. Από κει ξεκινάει η σωτηρία μας, από το βάπτισμα και το χρίσμα. Γι’ αυτό είναι και τα βασικά μυστήρια, χωρίς τα οποία δεν μπορούμε, ξέρετε, να κοινωνήσουμε. Το βάπτισμα λέγεται η πύλη, το πέρασμα, για να μπούμε μέσα στην Εκκλησία. «Ἐκεῖνος γὰρ ἀληθῶς ἀπαρχή». Ποιος;
