Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that Holy Chrism is not ordinary oil but a gift of Christ, a bearer of the Holy Spirit, and an active means of divine grace. The lecture presents the veil as a symbol of shame and submission, connecting its liturgical use with Saint Paul’s teaching about men and women in worship. The breast is anointed as a breastplate of righteousness and holiness, strengthening the believer to resist the schemes of the devil.

You will remember, beloved, that we had reached the Third Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, which concerns Chrismation. We had made this very important point: this oil, this Holy Chrism—which, from a technical standpoint, I had not told you, is composed of many aromatic substances, some forty fragrant oils—is prepared, as a mark of honor, at the Patriarchate and sent to all the Orthodox churches throughout the world.
This is not merely... Saint Cyril says here that it is “a gift of Christ and the presence of the Holy Spirit, made effective through His divinity.” What is it, then? It is, he says, a gift of Christ; it is effective through the divinity—the divinity acts through it—and it is the presence of the Holy Spirit. And I told you that it is a bearer of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, you will remember that we said: just as, after the consecration in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the bread and wine are no longer mere bread and mere wine, so too this oil, the Holy Chrism of Chrismation, is not plain—that is, not bare or ordinary oil. Rather, as he says here, it is effective through the divinity; it is a gift of Christ and the presence of the Holy Spirit. That is what we discussed last time. Now we continue at the end of the third paragraph. He says: “This is symbolically applied to your forehead and to your other senses; and while the body is anointed with the visible chrism, the soul is sanctified by the Holy and Life-giving Spirit.” In other words...
He says that we symbolically apply it to the forehead, and all your senses are anointed. Saint Cyril will give us a detailed description further on. “With the visible chrism”—with the chrism we can see—the body is anointed; but by the Holy Spirit, whom we cannot see, the soul is sanctified. This, then, is what a Mystery means: that which is visible and that which is invisible. What is visible is the oil, the chrism. What is invisible is the presence and sanctification of the Holy Spirit, which embraces the whole person, body and soul, as Saint Cyril will tell us immediately below. We come, then, to paragraph four: “First, you are anointed upon the forehead.” To begin with, he says, you are anointed on your foreheads. You have surely seen this many times when attending Baptisms: after the Baptism, the priest performs the Chrismation. From the metal vessel he takes a small applicator with cotton at its tip and begins to anoint. Where does he begin? He begins with the forehead.
He anoints the whole body—the breast, the hands, the ears, and so forth. Saint Cyril will tell us about all of these. “First, you are anointed upon the forehead.” Why? “That you may be delivered from the shame which the first man, the transgressor, carried about everywhere, and that, with unveiled face, you may behold as in a mirror the glory of the Lord.” Here he tells us something very beautiful and important, so pay attention. We are anointed on the forehead so that we may be freed from shame—the shame borne by the first transgressor, Adam. And now, when that shame has been removed, we may behold the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, with unveiled face. Let us examine this. Holy Scripture—the New Testament, as we saw in Paul—tells us that Adam existed for the glory of Christ, his Creator, because his very existence, like a work of art, truly manifested the glory of the Creator. There is a verse on which Saint John of Damascus comments:
“Through me You have been shown to be wondrous.” That is: You, God, my Creator, were shown to be wondrous through the way I was fashioned. When You fashioned me, You were glorified, because my creation is wondrous. Indeed, I very often sit and think: What is man? How can this work, and how can that work? You know that, biologically speaking, human existence remains unexplored. Medical science has advanced and penetrated more and more deeply, yet man still remains an unknown land. Therefore, however much man searches and investigates, he will always discover more, while the human person will always remain beyond full exploration. I think especially about one function—I have mentioned this to you before—the reproduction of a new human being: how within that tiny seed, or blood, the whole human being is already present, with all the characteristics of his ancestors. It is astonishing! Astonishing! This alone, I think, is the most astonishing aspect of all in the way the human being is fashioned. And, if you like, it is astonishing in animals as well, and so forth. In any case, when someone bends down to study these things, he marvels at God. Man, therefore...
whose very existence does nothing but reflect the glory of his Creator, now sins in Adam and consequently brings shame upon his Creator. How, then, can he stand before the Creator? He is like a person—or a little child—who, when found guilty, hides his face in both hands. I saw a photograph a few days ago of some wretched people, including a schoolteacher, who were trafficking drugs. Did you see the photograph in the local newspaper? You did.
They had lowered their heads and were trying to hide their faces. Why? Because the face radiates either glory or shame. Since Adam sinned against his Creator, he carried shame wherever he went. But he also brought shame upon his Creator. Let me mention something Saint Cyril says elsewhere, in a much earlier catechesis. “It is not right,” says God the Word (Logos). This arises in answer to the question: Why did the Word become man, rather than the Father or the Holy Spirit? Because, he says, the Word created us. Of course, the Triune God created us, but the Word, in a certain sense, has precedence here. And it is not right, he says, that carved images should be worshiped—
that is, little wooden statues and idols—and not God the Father. It is as though God the Word were answerable to the Father. I say, as though. And so, because “it is not right,” He Himself came into the world to put matters right. Thus, in a certain sense, the Son feels dishonored before the Father because His creature brought Him shame and fell away. What I am telling you is very important. When Christ came, man, through the Chrismation he receives upon his forehead, became able to stand before God “with unveiled face.” This phrase is taken from the Second Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter three, verse eighteen. Saint Cyril uses it here to show that Chrismation removes the veil and makes us new again, so that the feeling of shame no longer remains. If you will allow me to broaden the subject a little, I would say this: the veil has two meanings. It is a twofold symbol: the symbol of shame,
and the symbol of submission—two things. Adam sinned, and therefore had to cover his face. Christ comes and restores him. Thus the man who offers the worship and the supreme sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Christ—the Divine Liturgy—must stand before the Holy Altar with his head uncovered. In other words, when the priest celebrates before the Holy Altar, he cannot wear a covering. Why? Because the man who has now been saved—the Christian—must reflect the glory of his Creator. There is no shame any longer. That is why we say: We dare to call You Father, and with boldness we say, “Our Father, who art in heaven.” A woman, by contrast, must wear a covering during the Divine Liturgy. Now pay close attention to me at this point. I want to make a brief observation.
Um...
I have never told you this before, nor have I ever insisted upon it. It has now become customary for women to attend Church without a head covering. Once, however, I made a comment on what the Apostle Paul says: that a woman should wear a covering—meaning, of course, during worship. John Chrysostom makes what I believe is a very important point: if a woman wore the covering, she would always retain the awareness that she is under her husband’s authority, and there would be no problems between spouses. This is, of course, a symbol, but we must not forget that symbols have their place. We cannot cast symbols aside. In this way, it would remind the woman of her submission to her husband. This is what God said when He expelled them from Paradise. He told the woman that her desire—
her submission—would be toward her husband. Indeed, He says those fearsome words: “He shall rule over you.” The Greek verb “to rule” takes the genitive case. Let us recall a little of Tzartzanos’s grammar: it takes the genitive—“He shall rule over you.” Yet at the beginning God had said: You—meaning Adam and Eve and your descendants—shall have dominion over the earth, the animals, everything. You are lords over them. But now, because Eve had not been watchful, He tells her that this is her punishment: her husband will now rule over her. Astonishing! Yet this...
is not merely punishment as punishment. It is punishment as a benefit, because the woman would rebel—and we see this especially in our own age. Therefore, in the New Testament, the woman is to wear the covering as a symbol of submission to her husband, so that she may know she must not overstep her boundaries, because in Paradise she overstepped them. She should have said to the devil: “What are you telling me? Am I to make this decision? My man is not here.” Adam was absent at that moment; he was not present. The devil got Eve alone—one of his familiar methods. She should have said: “No, I will make no decision, and I will listen to none of this. Since God said no, then no. My husband, my man, will return, and then we shall decide.” Did Eve do this? No. That is how she overstepped her boundaries. She went beyond her proper place and entered her husband’s domain. And not only that, but she also led Adam astray. Thus, you will be under your husband’s authority, so that you may learn not to be rash. Please do not misunderstand me, ladies. I am not saying these things because I am a man. This is how one must speak. I am speaking according to Holy Scripture.
The Apostle Paul says that a woman should wear a covering. Whether you choose to follow this is up to you, but it is what the Word of God says. The custom has simply fallen into disuse; it is one of those practices that have faded away. When I studied the matter more carefully, I said: What a pity. Why do we have feminism, even in Orthodox lands? Because we abolished what we call the symbol. It was a symbol, yes, but we abolished the symbol and lost the reality it expressed. And so the woman no longer remembers that she is to submit to her husband; instead, today she slaps her husband around. What a pity, what a pity. At least during worship—for that is the setting of which the Apostle Paul speaks—the woman should wear a covering.
Would you like another example? The Apostle Paul says that a woman should not speak in the Church, but should remain silent. Whatever she wishes to ask, she should ask her husband at home. Of course, this is a practical detail that contains an underlying meaning. But that takes us further afield, and I will not comment on it now.
However!
While God removes the veil of shame from the man, He wills that the man who serves before the Holy Altar should remain uncovered. Men within the Church do not wear a covering. When we enter the Church wearing a hat, we remove it. Do women remove their hats? No. This is a sign, a symbol of submission.
This was practiced by women who wished to express their submission to their husbands. The woman stands beside her husband, speaks and converses with him; they deliberate and take counsel together. Then he says: “That you may receive ears, concerning which Isaiah said, ‘And the Lord has given me an ear to hear.’”
And the Lord says: “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Then the priest who performs the Baptism comes to anoint with the Holy Chrism, and the anointing is always made in the form of the Cross—do not forget that. It is always the Cross, always the Cross, and we become the sealed image of God. Indeed, there is a prayer among the exorcisms which says: “Depart, demon, and do not trouble the sealed image of God.” But how did the demon come to trouble the sealed image of God? Because the image itself—rather, the person, the human being who bears the image—
gave the devil grounds to do so. Man sinned, and God now permits him to be troubled by the devil. Then, he says, the Holy Chrism is applied to the ears; the sign of the Cross is made over the ears, so that you may receive the ears of which Isaiah spoke: “And the Lord has given me an ear to hear.” He gave me an ear so that I might hear; that is, in addition to these two physical ears that every human being possesses, He gives me another ear.
The singular here implies the plural, just as we say “Israel” while meaning the Israelites, and so on. We have many such expressions in the singular that imply the plural. We could therefore say, “He added ears for me.” What ears are these, of which the Lord said in the New Testament, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear”? Let us see, my beloved, what these ears are. As you know, we have five senses. But behind the five bodily senses there are five senses of the soul.
Our bodily eyes see. But an ancient saying tells us, “The nous sees, and the nous hears.” When we say that the nous—the spiritual intellect—sees and hears, we mean that behind our bodily senses there are corresponding spiritual senses. Thus the soul sees, hears, smells, touches, and tastes. What does Holy Scripture say? “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
Taste and see that the Lord is good. When it calls us to taste, what does that mean? Are we to put out our tongues and taste something? No. It is speaking of spiritual taste. It means: come and experience it; engage your spiritual sense of taste and discover how beautiful, good, and gracious the Lord is. It is striking that Holy Scripture invites us to apprehend the Lord through our spiritual senses. Through our bodily senses, of course, we do not apprehend Him. We did once, when He became man, and we shall again when we enter the Kingdom of God.
May God count us worthy of this. Then, with our full human nature and our whole body, our inner senses will be united with our outer senses. The Apostle says, “We shall see Him.” When? When we receive our new bodies. “We shall see Him as He is.” Therefore, there will be no opposition between our outer and inner senses, such as we often create now, but complete unity: these senses will become one. Today they are not. Let me use an example I heard recently on the radio, in the news or commentary: they say that Europe must not have a “two-speed economy.” I shall apply this phrase, “two speeds,” to my example. Our outer and inner senses operate at two different speeds. They should not. They will move at one speed when each proceeds at the same pace as the other. But what do we do? Our outer senses race ahead, while our inner senses remain inactive and motionless. Thus, in those days, the Jews saw Jesus Christ. As Origen beautifully says, Pilate saw Him, Herod saw Him, Caiaphas saw Him, and Annas saw Him.
Yet, he says, they did not see the Word—the Word with a capital W. With their outer senses they saw Jesus, but those who believed saw the Word. Did not the Lord say, “Philip, he who has seen Me has seen the Father,” and so forth? This is inner sight. A person could look upon Jesus and at the same time confess, “You are the Son of the living God, the Word of God”—the Word with a capital W, the second Person of the Holy Trinity. If, then, you see with your bodily eyes and your inner eyes are not impaired, these two kinds of senses move at the same speed. Otherwise, they move at two different speeds.
Two speeds. This is the first time I have used that example, but I shall use it again, because it is helpful in the spiritual life. We may say, for example, that your bodily age is one thing, while your spiritual age is very low. Your bodily and spiritual ages are therefore not keeping pace with each other; they move at two different speeds. That is one way of putting it. So what am I meant to hear? Isaiah says, “He added an ear for me”—that is, inner ears. They are ears given by the Holy Spirit.
When the Lord says, “He who has ears”—meaning outward, bodily ears—“let him hear,” with what ears is he to hear? With the inner ears, those given by the Holy Spirit. Just as the Holy Spirit gives us “other eyes of this kind,” as John Chrysostom says, so the Holy Spirit also gives us other ears. These are the ears of faith: I hear, and I receive. They are given to us by the Holy Spirit, as I have told you, because the Chrism is the visible, material bearer of the Holy Spirit. Let us continue: “Then upon the sense of smell, so that, perceiving the divine Chrism, you may say, ‘We are the fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved.’” Next, he says, the priest anoints the nose with the sign of the Cross, so that you may perceive this divine Chrism and say that we are the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved. You know that among the many names of Jesus Christ—and these names express His attributes, characteristics, or divine uncreated energies—is the name
“Chrism poured forth”—the word begins with the Greek prefix ek-. It means fragrant oil that has been emptied out and poured forth. If we keep it in a sealed bottle, we cannot smell it. But when we pour it out, its fragrance spreads everywhere. Christ is therefore called “Chrism poured forth.” This name is found in the Song of Songs. Likewise, the believer who becomes Christlike must also become chrism poured forth. This happens when he is baptized and receives Holy Chrism. Then, through his life, his words, his conduct, his deeds, and his whole manner of living, he becomes a fragrance, as the Apostle Paul says in Second Corinthians: the fragrance of Christ.
To help you understand this, let me take the opposite idea. When a man is sinful and immoral, we call him filthy: “Ah, that filthy man!” We do not mean, of course, that his clothes or his outward appearance are dirty. We mean that his character is filthy. If we wish to describe him, we say that he is...
He is a stench, a foul odor. We hold our noses.
It is not that he literally smells; rather, his way of life gives off a stench. You know, when a man is debauched—you have heard that expression—we may even recoil from touching him. Yes, when a man runs from one woman to another—please forgive me, but this is how one feels—one may not even wish to take his hand in greeting. Of such a man we say, “He is debauched, ruined, filthy.” And to show you that this is indeed so, Holy Scripture goes even further than what I have just said.
Saint Jude, the Brother of the Lord, says something I have mentioned before: even “the garment stained by the flesh,” the garment that comes into contact with the body and the skin, you must not take. He is not speaking only of clothing; do not accept anything that comes into contact with such a person’s skin. In a spiritual sense, this shows that we should not even keep the possessions of such a person. Would you like to see the opposite? Consider how we preserve the belongings of a saintly person. Does not John Chrysostom say that not only are the relics of the Saints a source of healings and gifts of grace,
but even their reliquaries—the containers and places where the relics rest? A reliquary may be a tomb of carved marble, or made from some metal or another; yet even the reliquaries, he says, impart grace. Just as gifts of grace flow from a sanctified person, so ugly things proceed from a filthy person. Thus, a person will either give forth—not “reflect,” since that word belongs to sight—a fragrant aroma, the fragrance of life, because Christ is life and Christ is fragrance,
and Christ is the Chrism poured forth; or else he will give forth the odor of death and the stench of demons. Have you ever smelled the stench of demons? You may ask, “Where could we possibly smell that?” First of all, we perceive it figuratively when a demon-possessed person stands before us. Such a person gives off the stench of demons in a figurative, spiritual sense. But can this ever be perceived physically? Yes. Our Fathers tell us that it can. I believe it is mentioned in the first volume of the Philokalia, perhaps by Saint John Cassian the Roman. It is somewhere there; I do not remember exactly where.
It goes something like this.
A monk had done something and afterward received a blessing from his elder, his spiritual father, and so forth. Then, we are told, the smell of burning sulfur spread through the place where they were. When the devil departs, if you will forgive the expression—some expressions are simply so vivid and come readily to the tongue—he lets loose his stench. The Fathers discern that one of the foul odors associated with demons is this smell. God permits it so that people may realize that the devil had been present there.
He leaves behind this physical smell—and I emphasize that it is physically perceptible—one form of which resembles burning sulfur. You have probably read accounts of this and can confirm what I am saying. Thus, fragrance or foul odor may sometimes be physically perceived, but above all it is perceived spiritually. When you meet a chaste, upright, honorable, and pure person who loves God and keeps the commandments of Christ, you sense that he is the fragrance of Christ. You feel it; you see it: he is the fragrance of Christ. And the opposite is also true, my beloved; these are things we can perceive. This fragrance of Christ, the fragrance of the Saints, prevails in a foul-smelling world. This is what Christians are within the world. As you know, anything not preserved with salt begins to rot and stink, does it not? Take meat or fish—anything you like—and leave it without salt. Will it not begin to stink? But if you add salt, it is preserved and no longer rots. Christ said, “You are the salt of the earth.”
If we took sardines from the sea and left them without salt, within two or three days they would smell dreadful. But once we add salt and then open the tin, we say, “What a lovely aroma! How good these sardines smell!” What made them smell good? The salt that preserved them. And Christians are that salt. As salt within society—and this is not my expression, for Christ said, “You are the salt of the earth”—Christians cleanse society of its foulness. I mean Christians who struggle faithfully, spiritual people who live a spiritual life. I trust you agree. But let us continue: “After this...”
“The breast is anointed, so that, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, you may stand against the schemes of the devil.” Next, he says, the priest makes the sign of the Cross with Holy Chrism over the breast, over the chest. Why? So that, he says, you may put on the breastplate of righteousness and stand firm. Here, righteousness means virtue. In Holy Scripture, both the Old Testament and the New Testament, the word “righteousness” has both meanings: the narrower meaning of justice, as we commonly understand it, and the broader meaning of virtue. This is what is meant when Scripture says of Abraham that he believed, and it was accounted to him as righteousness.
That is, as virtue. Indeed, the word “righteousness” signifies the sum of all the virtues, and therefore holiness and sanctification. We might therefore say, “Put on the breastplate of holiness”—the breastplate of righteousness. This is what the Apostle Paul tells us in the sixth chapter of Ephesians: put it on so that you may stand against the schemes of the devil. This is very beautiful, because the breastplate of holiness is formed through Holy Chrism, and we know that the enemy aims at the head and the chest. Concerning the head, the Apostle speaks in Ephesians of “the helmet of salvation.” In ancient warfare, whether you carried a javelin, a sword, a spear, or some other weapon, you tried to strike your opponent either in the head or in the chest, because these are vital points. So we are anointed upon the chest in order to be armed with the full armor of the Spirit and enabled to stand against the schemes of the devil. And what are these schemes? Oh, my beloved! Each of us has an age. How old are we? Five, ten, twenty, thirty, fifty, eighty, or a hundred years?
How old is the devil? As old as he has been since he was created as an angel, of course. Do you know how much experience the devil has? Terrible experience. How can we recognize his schemes—that is, his tricks—so that we can resist him? For he approaches us from the left and from the right, since he can appear as an angel of light. How, then, can I discern him? How can I recognize his tricks? Only if I have the Spirit of God, whom I received through Chrismation. The Spirit of God will help me to see
and will show me how to resist. My dear friends, spiritual life without the Holy Spirit is a fantasy; it is like rice pilaf without rice. “After this,”
“For just as the Savior, after His Baptism and the descent of the Holy Spirit, went forth and defeated the adversary, so also you, after sacred Baptism and mystical Chrismation, having put on the full armor of the Holy Spirit, must stand against the hostile power and overcome it, saying, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’”
There is a brief account that we must always keep in mind—truly, always. When Christ was baptized, He withdrew into the wilderness, meaning a deserted place, not a sandy desert.
The Lord went there at the prompting of the Holy Spirit, and both Matthew and Luke say that He went “to be tempted by the devil.” The Holy Spirit drove, so to speak, Christ’s human nature into the wilderness to undergo the devil’s trial—not for the Lord Himself to be tested. Here again, Saint Cyril uses the same verb I corrected last Monday, “to implant.” It does not mean that Christ was devoid of the Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit now came and was implanted in Him. God forbid! That is blasphemy. And likewise here, He did not go in order to be—
For Him to be put to the test would be unthinkable. But listen to the reason: “Just as you deceived My creatures, Adam and Eve, so now I shall outwit you.” It is a reversal. Pay attention to this: a reversal. Christ did not go into the wilderness to be tested, but to meet the devil and set a trap for him, in order to overthrow him—which is exactly what happened. It would be blasphemy to say that Christ went out to be tested. I told you this last time as well.
Recently, false teachings have been voiced claiming that Christ gradually became holy. What unheard-of blasphemies! I repeat: He did not go out “to be tempted by the devil” in the sense that He Himself needed testing. He went to show the devil who he was—to expose the devil. For the devil did not know who Jesus was. Do you know why? He could not see His divinity. He could, of course, see His human soul and His human body, but God the Word (Logos) is not visible; He is the invisible God. No created being has ever seen God. Does not John the Evangelist say, “No one has ever seen God”? No one ever will see Him, nor “can see Him.” See what? What is it that no one can see?
The essence of God. The devil, therefore, could not see God the Word (Logos). And the devil certainly could not, since not even the angels have ever seen God. They behold His divine uncreated energies; these are what they perceive. Therefore, the devil could not see Christ’s divinity. When Christ went into the wilderness, He fasted, and then the tempter came. He had been watching Him for forty days.
The devil had heard the voice at the Jordan: “You are My Son, in whom I am well pleased.” “Son”—but what kind of Son? A son of what nature? And take note: not even the angels knew that God is Trinity. The triune nature of God was revealed through Jesus Christ.
This is what the angels came to know. But what kind of Son was He? That is why the devil’s first words to the Lord were, “If You are the Son of God”—because that was what he had heard—“command these stones to become bread.” The Lord rebuffed him. Now, how did the devil appear? Probably as a man. The devil probably appeared in human form. At the end, in the third temptation, when he told the Lord to fall down and worship him, do you know what the Lord said? He said, “Get behind Me, Satan.” In other words: “I know who you are. I am exposing you. But I am not revealing who I am to you, because I am still concealing Myself from you.”
“In the end I shall hook you,” as the Fathers say, “with the hook called the Cross.” You know that we put bait on a hook in order to catch fish. The bait would be Christ’s body upon the Cross. Thus one of Christ’s names is “Bait.” The bait is His body, and the hook is the Cross. The devil raised Christ upon the Cross.
“I have hooked you! Bite—bite the bait!” “You shall strike His heel.” Was not the heel mentioned in Paradise? You will bite Him; you will wound Him. But He will crush your head. Why? Because you will be caught on the hook that is the Cross, and Hades, personified, will cry: “Is this the One who descended into Hades? Woe is me! What has happened to me here in Hades? What has happened to me!” Thank you.
The divinity therefore had to remain hidden, so that God’s plan might be fulfilled. What plan? To trap the devil. A reversal, as I told you earlier. Thus Christ does not reveal Himself to the devil by saying, “Do you know who I am? I am the Son of God; I am God.” He says nothing of the kind. Instead, it is as though He says, “I shall expose you. You are the devil. I know who you are. Be gone!” Forgive the expression, but that is what “Get behind Me” means. In modern Greek we would translate it just like that: “Be gone!”
Something behind us is no longer seen; it disappears from sight. That is the meaning of the expression, “Go away and disappear!” Now, the devil’s schemes are terrible. The devil is exceedingly cunning. What experience do we have, my dear friends? How can we fight him? And how can young people—boys and girls—resist what is called the worldly mindset, what is called sexual immorality, and all the rest? How can they resist unless we have the Spirit of God opening our eyes, enabling us to recognize the devil’s schemes, and giving us the nous of Christ? As the Apostle Paul says, “We have the nous of Christ.”
We recognize how the devil thinks. Otherwise, without Christ and without the Holy Spirit, how can we possibly struggle? Therefore, he says that when you struggle, wearing this breastplate that is formed spiritually by the sign of the Cross made upon the breast, you are to say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” as the Apostle says in Philippians. “I can do all things” means “at all times,” he says. It is an adverb, not an adjective. At all times!
When? I can always prevail when Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit strengthen me. A person, therefore, can never say, “You know, I cannot.” He can never say that, because he has the power of Christ. The difference is that he must make use of it. Let us now proceed to the fifth paragraph: “Having been counted worthy of this Holy Chrism, you are called Christians, confirming the name through your rebirth.” This is a beautiful statement, a beautiful teaching. Have you ever considered why we are called Christians? You will tell me: because of the name Christ. Yes, but also because we have been chrismated. Christ is the Christ—that is, the One who has been anointed—because He was anointed. Therefore, Saint Cyril says here that, having been counted worthy to receive Chrismation, we are called Christians because we received the anointing of the Holy Spirit through the Mystery of Chrismation, just as Christ, in His human nature, received the spiritual anointing that is the Holy Spirit. We spoke about this last time. In this way, through our rebirth, the name is confirmed and shown to be true. Through our rebirth in Christ Jesus and in the Holy Spirit, we renew and
vindicate the name “Christian.” How, then, can someone call himself a Christian when his life is not a life in the Holy Spirit? My dear friends, this is our longing, our heartache, our labor, and our struggle in this present world: to acquire the Holy Spirit. Or rather, since we already possess Him but He remains inactive within us—we received Him once and for all, yet we do not allow Him to act in our lives; see His gentleness and how completely He respects our freedom—we leave Him inactive. Let us therefore give Him room to act within our lives. “Do I have the Spirit of God?” This is what we must ask ourselves.
You know, we can possess the Spirit of God in different measures. What do you think? Before the disciples received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, were they entirely without the Holy Spirit? Could they have followed Christ Jesus without the Holy Spirit? What did they see in Him that led them to leave their belongings and their property and follow Jesus? They could not have done so if they had not possessed the Holy Spirit. Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit is given progressively, reaching its fullness at Pentecost. So this is the first sign: if I confess that Jesus is God, I have the Holy Spirit. For no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except in the Holy Spirit. I confess God as Father.
This too is through the Holy Spirit, for it is in the Holy Spirit that we say, “Abba, Father.” But these things are not enough. There is much more, and little by little we must become spiritual people. For this is our final purpose: that the Holy Spirit may be our lamp burning brightly. May the Lord bless you.

Τελευταία κακοδοξίες που ειπώθηκαν, ότι ο Χριστός έγινε σιγά σιγά Άγιος. Πα, βλασφημίες! Ανήκουστες βλασφημίες! Δεν βγήκε, ξαναλέγω, «πειρασθήναι υπό του διαβόλου» με την εξής έννοια: για να του πει ποιος είναι, να τον αποκαλύψει τον διάβολο. Διότι ο διάβολος δεν ήξερε ποιος είναι ο Ιησούς. Ξέρετε γιατί; Δεν έβλεπε τη θεότητα. Έβλεπε βεβαίως την ανθρωπίνη ψυχή, έβλεπε βεβαίως το ανθρώπινο σώμα, αλλά ο Θεός Λόγος δεν εμφαίνεται, είναι ο αόρατος Θεός. Ουδεμία κτιστή κτίσις ποτέ είδε τον Θεό. Δεν το λέει ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης; «Θεόν ουδείς πώποτε εώρακε». Κανείς ποτέ ούτε θα δει, «ούτε δύναται ιδείν». Τι; Ποιο;
