Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s third Mystagogical Catechesis presents chrismation through Christ’s baptism in the Jordan and His sanctifying contact with the created waters. The Holy Spirit’s descent at Christ’s baptism did not supply something Christ lacked, but revealed Him publicly as the incarnate Son and Messiah, since the Spirit had never been separated from Him. Believers receive not the inaccessible divine essence but the Holy Spirit’s uncreated energies, and through baptism and chrismation they participate in Christ’s anointing and life.

Dear friends, as we continue with Saint Cyril’s Third Mystagogical Catechesis, we are speaking—or rather, Saint Cyril is speaking—about the Mystery of Chrismation. Last time we already considered several points, because he referred back to the preceding catechesis and told us that we become conformed to the Son of God, and so forth, and united with Him. Now, of course, he goes on to reveal to us the Mystery of Chrismation. We have reached...
the thirteenth passage. Those of you who have the book, please follow along. “And He, having washed in the Jordan River and imparted to the waters the contact of the skin of His divinity, came up from them; and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in a manner pertaining to the divine essence, like resting upon like; and likewise upon you,” and so forth. That is, he says, when the Lord was baptized—when He washed—He was baptized in the Jordan River and imparted to the waters “the contact of the skin of His divinity.” The Greek word chrōta, in the plural, means “skins.” The singular is chrōs, meaning “skin”; chrōta means “skins.”
In the old days, in the army or at school, when someone had been given a very close haircut, we would say, “shorn to the skin.” And the word “shorn” comes from the verb “to shear,” as does the expression “monastic tonsure.” In other words, it was a haircut that went right down to the skin: “shorn to the skin.”
“Jews do not associate with Samaritans.” Thank you. The Greek expression means that they do not come into contact skin to skin—that is, they cannot stand one another. Indeed, this was taken quite literally. If, for example, a Jew accidentally touched a Samaritan—if, while walking, his hand brushed against him, one person’s skin touching the other’s—the Jew had to go and perform ritual purifications. Thus, “they do not associate” means that their skins do not come into contact, both literally and figuratively: they do not even say good morning to one another. “Jews...” This is something the Evangelist John points out to us. That is why, on one occasion when the Lord was going up to Jerusalem, they would not receive Him, because, as it says, “He set His face” toward Jerusalem; that is, He passed through Samaria. And that is why the Evangelist asked that fire come down and burn up a Samaritan village. Yes, burn it up. You see? The Evangelist John, if you please! Yes, yes, yes. Now then, pay attention. Saint Cyril says that when the Lord entered the Jordan River, He imparted to the waters “the contact of the skin of His divinity.” Let us examine this more closely. Of course, the Lord’s human nature...
His human nature was one hundred percent human. Yet, as the Apostle Paul tells us, in Jesus Christ dwelt “all the fullness of the Godhead.” What does “fullness” mean? Jesus Christ did not possess merely a small part of the Godhead, or a small part of Himself. The essence is one, because God is one; the essence of God is one. This is the incomprehensible mystery: within Christ’s human nature dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead. I believe you have come across this short phrase, “all the fullness of the Godhead.” The Son was never separated from the Father or from the Holy Spirit—never.
Never. And now the Godhead, in the one person of God the Word (Logos), comes into contact with creation and communicates through His human nature. What does He communicate? Allow me here to explain this briefly, because it is extremely useful. Of course, this is not the first time we have spoken about what I am about to tell you. How does the Godhead communicate with creation? The Godhead is spirit: “God is Spirit.” The world, however, which God created—here is the incomprehensible thing—God created out of nothing.
It is incomprehensible—philosophically and rationally incomprehensible. How did God make the world out of nothing? There was no other world already in existence which He broke apart and then used its materials to build the world we know. Nor did He give something from His own essence to form the material world, because then creation would share in the essence of God. Far be it from us! What blasphemy! What foolishness! Without realizing it, we would fall into pantheism. This is why the creation of the world out of nothing is an incomprehensible mystery. But how, then, does God communicate with creation? First, He creates. He first creates, and afterward He communicates.
God is uncreated and truly spiritual—“spiritual” here does not mean the third person of the Holy Trinity, but refers to the words “God is Spirit.” The immaterial God communicates with creation and with the events that take place within creation, with human beings, and with everything else. How does He communicate? He communicates through what are called His divine uncreated energies. The divine uncreated energies are precisely that: uncreated. They are the energies of God that proceed—or, as we say, go outward.
We say “outward.” But is there an inside and an outside in God? We might, of course, recall that the Holy Spirit searches even the depths of God. Yet we cannot adequately speak of these things. Human language is insufficient. We speak of what is “outside” God, but is God contained somewhere? Does He come to an end? Does He have boundaries, so that we can speak of something outside Him? This is why I told you that human language is inadequate for speaking about these matters. In any event, we speak as best we can in human terms. The divine uncreated energies are what we call God’s outward manifestation. Or, better, God expresses Himself outwardly through His divine uncreated energies. Through them He created the world.
Yet the uncreated energies—I have said this two or three times—are themselves Godhead, according to the teaching of our Church. The divine uncreated energies are Godhead. Nevertheless, there is a distinction within God. Three things are distinguished in God: first, the essence; second, the person; and third, the divine uncreated energies. The world, then, comes into being through the divine uncreated energies. Love is an uncreated energy. Therefore, God creates the world out of love. This is a very familiar saying.
God creates the world out of love. But love is an uncreated energy; it is Godhead, within the threefold distinction I mentioned earlier. What is astonishing, unique, and incomprehensible is that one person of the Holy Trinity—God the Word (Logos)—takes on human nature and clothes Himself in created existence, naturally in the form of a man. Man is created. Thus the Godhead now comes, in the person of Jesus Christ, of the...
Word (Logos), who is Jesus Christ, and enters into contact with creation. This is something unprecedented—I shall use an inaccurate expression—in the history of God. God has no history; the expression is inaccurate, but I use it to help us understand. In the “history of God,” this is unprecedented, unheard of, and unique: the unapproachable God, “who dwells in unapproachable light,” as the Apostle Paul writes to Timothy, enters into communion with creation—not now through His divine uncreated energies, but in a personal manner. If you have even a little...
philosophical education and even a slight theological inclination, you will understand what I have said and see how astonishing it is. I do not know what words could express this wonder: God comes into contact with His creation through the Incarnation of Jesus. Saint Cyril therefore goes so far as to say—and I shall read the phrase again—“having washed in the Jordan River and imparted to the waters the contact of the skin of His divinity.” What is this “skin of His divinity”? The Godhead has no physical skin. Yet the human nature of God the Word (Logos) does have skin. And so...
the Godhead comes into contact with created existence, no longer merely through the divine uncreated energies, but through Jesus Christ. This is what is astonishing, incomprehensible, and profound. If Plato or Aristotle were here—true philosophers, and more precisely Plato—and heard this teaching, which is familiar to us today because God the Word (Logos) became man, and has therefore become almost commonplace to us, he would stand openmouthed and be unable to utter a word, if he grasped—and he certainly would grasp—the meaning of it.
Could he have grasped it? The event itself had to take place before he could. This is why Plato spoke about the Forms. Allow me this aside. There is a certain correspondence in his teaching about the Forms. Be careful: the Gospel borrowed nothing from Plato—God forbid that you should think so. Yet according to Plato, the Forms are uncreated. Is that not what he says? Uncreated. Just as God is uncreated, so God creates the world through the Forms—or, more accurately, adorns and orders the world. According to Plato, God is not the Creator of the world but its Fashioner and Adorner, because he assumes that matter already existed...
as a first principle. The whole philosophy is dualistic. Yet you can see a slight correspondence. If Plato had learned this teaching, he would have been left speechless. And I believe something more: he would have abandoned his theory of the Forms and become a deeply committed Christian. I believe it; I truly believe it. Though he was a pagan, this may explain why some Byzantine churches in northern Greece—especially in Western Macedonia, near the border—depict Plato in the narthex...
along with Socrates and Aristotle. Perhaps those who placed them there thought as I am speaking to you now. Perhaps they reasoned in this way. Or they may have followed Justin, who spoke of the seminal Logos—that the truths of God existed in seed form among the philosophers—and Plato might have become a profound saint. Of course, God knows whether they were saved or will be saved. I think and believe that when Christ descended into Hades, and the proclamation of metanoia—the call to repentance—was preached there by Saint John the Baptist, who had gone before Him into Hades, Plato believed in Christ. I believe it.
None of those who lived before Christ were treated unjustly, because the proclamation was made there: the proclamation of faith in the person of Jesus Christ. Whoever believed in the person of Jesus Christ was saved. And when the Lord departed from Hades—that is, when He transformed one part of Hades into Paradise—they entered Paradise, while He returned to the earth to continue His work and afterward departed for heaven. I have said all this so that you may see how the Godhead communicates with creation—with His own creation—and so that we may understand who Jesus Christ is. We must understand this. What can one say about those who insult Jesus Christ...
who blaspheme Him and deny Him? What a tragedy, what a tragedy! My dear friends, I wish that you who hear these few words might come to appreciate—may all of us come to appreciate—most deeply the person of Jesus Christ, so that He may move us profoundly. Someone came to me today—perhaps... but where is he? Never mind. I want him to hear me, because I said nothing to him; I only listened. “When I am alone,” he said—and I told him to spend time alone—“I want to cry aloud because of the love I have for Jesus Christ. I want to shout it aloud.” Yes, yes. If Archimedes...
leapt naked from his bath, giving no thought to his nakedness—his excitement made him forget that he had been bathing—and cried out, “Eureka! Eureka! I have found it! I have found it!” what had he discovered? The buoyancy of bodies, it seems. Was that not it? The buoyancy of bodies: that a body immersed in liquid, in a sense, loses some of its weight. The buoyancy of bodies, if I remember correctly. Then how should someone feel who has discovered the Son of God? Yes, you feel like crying aloud; tears come to your eyes. But those tears are the most beautiful tears a human being can have. They are not merely tears of joy. They are something else—the feeling that may come over a person when...
the Son of God now not only touches His creation, but touches the heart and transforms it. For once the Son of God became man, He would touch all things: human beings—for this is why He became man—and human hearts, and so forth. Let us continue.
He says: “As He came up from these waters, there came upon Him an essential descent of the Holy Spirit, like resting upon like.” And so, as He came up from the waters of the river, there was a descent upon Jesus—and pay close attention here—an essential descent: like upon like, the Holy Spirit upon the Son. Here we have the word “descent.” You must pay very close attention to this word, very close attention indeed. It does not mean, “I come and take up my dwelling.”
We spoke about this at Pentecost. The Spirit descended upon the Apostles—or, more precisely, upon the 120 who were in the upper room. But the word means a manifestation, a public revealing. You know how careful we must be with words. First of all, I ask God’s forgiveness if, through my ignorance, I fail to speak accurately. Through my ignorance, I say. Of course, that would not make me a heretic, because if someone showed me that I was mistaken, I would correct it at once and ask forgiveness. Still, we must be extremely careful with words. And let us not forget that, over the course of history, a word often takes on...
a different meaning, and sometimes even the exact opposite meaning. Be that as it may, “descent” here does not mean simply to come upon someone and remain there; it means to reveal or manifest. For Jesus Christ was not without the Holy Spirit. You know that in earlier times a controversy arose over this subject, and a Synod was held in Constantinople concerning the claim that Christ did not possess the Holy Spirit but received Him at some later moment. And, without going any further, quite recently, in a certain religious newspaper...
a tremendous quarrel broke out. A fierce debate began between various people—an Archbishop, certain theologians, university professors, and others—over this subject. The main issue concerned the blameworthy passions, though this question is closely related: Did Christ already possess the Holy Spirit, or did He receive Him on the day of His Baptism? That is the issue. He did not receive the Holy Spirit then—I mean, of course, in His human nature. His human nature did not receive the Holy Spirit on the day of His Baptism.
Did the Spirit descend upon Him in the sense that Jesus then received the Holy Spirit? Someone says—and who says it? Is it Saint Cyril? I do not remember—how could that be? We have discussed this subject before. This flesh itself was formed by the Holy Spirit. Did not the Archangel say that she would conceive “of the Holy Spirit”? Who fashioned Christ’s human nature? Since there was no male element involved, who, then, fashioned the human nature of Jesus Christ? The Holy Spirit. The Archangel Gabriel said this plainly. Therefore—therefore...
The Holy Spirit fashions Christ’s human nature, and in that nature God the Word takes up His dwelling. The Holy Spirit fashions it; could what He fashioned be without the Holy Spirit? Never, never. The Holy Spirit was never separated from the person of God the Word, since the divine essence is one, nor was He separated from Christ’s human nature, since, as the Apostle Paul says, all the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Jesus. “All the fullness” means that which fills completely. To fill means to bring something to completeness. Nothing is lacking. How, then, could the Holy Spirit be lacking? Is that possible?
Did He, then, receive the Holy Spirit on the day of His Baptism? No. The Holy Spirit revealed who Jesus is. He pointed Him out: “This is He.” For this reason the Holy Spirit is also called the finger of the Father. So the word used here, “descent,” means that He revealed Him. A brief aside: if you ask me, “Why are you telling us these things? Would it not be useless for us to know our theology?”—there is something more at stake. Consider that quarrel in the newspaper over whether Christ had passions or not. Do you realize that we are trying to bring Jesus Christ down...
to the post-Fall condition of man, the condition of a descendant of Adam? And if we bring Him down to that post-Fall condition, then—allow me to say it—everything is forgiven us; or rather, everything is permitted us. People who wish to remain in their passions and weaknesses forge such theories, and these theories are heresies. Anyone who has read everything we are discussing now will understand me very well. Therefore, this is an intensely practical matter, because practical consequences arise from these teachings. It is not mere theory; practical issues flow from it.
That “descent” here does not mean simply a descent, but a manifestation, a revealing, is shown by Saint Cyril’s preceding word: “an essential descent of the Holy Spirit.” What does “essential” mean? It refers to the essence of the Holy Spirit. But the divine essence is one. A portion of one essence cannot come and be added to another essence. God’s essence is one. The proof is what he says immediately afterward: “like resting upon like.” Like upon like. In other words, the essence is one, the essence is one. Therefore, the Holy Spirit did not come down because He was absent...
from Jesus’ human nature, but came in order to reveal Him. For us, however, it is a true descent, because we do not already possess Him. Yet when the Holy Spirit comes to us, take note, He does not come essentially. That is, we do not receive the essence of the Holy Spirit—that would be an extraordinary claim—but we receive the divine uncreated energies of the divine essence. We cannot receive the essence of God. This is understandable. “And likewise for you, when you came up.” Likewise for you, he says, when you came up from the baptismal font. He says “came up” because the ancient baptisteries were set lower than the floor.
This is well known; perhaps you have seen it, for example, at... “And likewise for you, when you came up from the sacred streams of the baptismal font, there was chrism, the antitype of that with which Christ was anointed; and this is the Holy Spirit.” The same applies to you, he says. To whom? To you who were baptized and are now receiving these Mystagogical Catecheses. When you came up, he says, from the sacred streams of the font—sacred streams. A stream is water that flows; thus, it means the water, the sacred water.
You received the chrism—the anointing. Pay attention: Christ entered the Jordan, and the river’s water came into contact with the skin of His body. In the same way, he says, when you entered the sacred streams, the water of the baptismal font, there you were anointed, wetted, immersed, as we say. “To immerse” and “to anoint” are being used synonymously here. So you entered and were baptized; that is, the water came into contact with your skin, with your body. This, he says, is the antitype of that with which Christ was anointed.
The prototype was the Jordan, into which Christ entered. From that point onward in history, every Baptism would be the antitype of Christ’s Baptism. This is why Christ was baptized. And, of course, Christ’s baptism by the teacher of repentance was not itself a baptism of repentance; rather, it was the starting point of Christian Baptism. There is a small detail in the holy Evangelists—one or two of them mention it—that after His Baptism the Lord “immediately came up from the water.” He came up because the riverbed is lower, while John stood on the bank and baptized. The word “immediately” is used because, at that time...
those being baptized would remain in the water while confessing their sins. They would say, “I did this; I did that; I did such-and-such.” The Lord had nothing to confess. This is why the Evangelist includes that small detail. Yet it is essential, of essential significance: “Immediately,” he says, “He came up from the water.”
So then, what is the baptismal font? It is the antitype of the Jordan. This is perfectly clear. I think we all know that it is the antitype of the Jordan. And since Christ came into contact with the waters, the water of the font now comes to give us an anointing. Pay attention: what kind of anointing? Not yet the Mystery of Chrismation—we shall speak about that later—but the fact that the water comes into contact with and, as it were, anoints our body. And now Saint Cyril says: “And this is the Holy Spirit.”
“And blessed Isaiah, in his prophecy, spoke in the person of the Lord: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me; He has sent Me to proclaim the Gospel to the poor.’”
That is:
blessed Isaiah says this. It is written in the sixty-first chapter of Isaiah. He speaks in the person of the Lord. In the person of whom? Of Jesus Christ, eight hundred years before Christ: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me.” The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me. Here the man Jesus is speaking through the person of Isaiah. Isaiah, as it were, takes the place of Christ: “Because He has anointed Me.” With what did He anoint Me? With the Holy Spirit.
“He has sent Me to proclaim the Gospel to the poor,” and so forth. Therefore, with what did He anoint Me? With the Holy Spirit. Let us continue. Paragraph two: “For Christ was not anointed by man with material oil or perfume; rather, the Father, having appointed Him Savior of the whole world, anointed Him with the Holy Spirit, as Peter says: ‘Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit.’” The Lord Jesus Christ, he says, was not anointed by man, nor was He anointed with material oil or perfume. Thus, He was anointed neither by man nor with a material substance. Rather, the Father Himself anointed Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit. “The Father Himself, having appointed Him Savior of the whole world, anointed Him with the Holy Spirit.” The Apostle Peter says this. Where does the Apostle Peter say it? In Acts, chapter ten, verse thirty-eight. What does he say? “Jesus of Nazareth.” A man,
His human nature. “God anointed Him”—that is, the Father. With what did He anoint Him? “With the Holy Spirit.” Thus the Father anoints the Son with the Holy Spirit and reveals Him in His human nature—not because He lacked the Holy Spirit, but because the Holy Spirit makes Him known. And as what does He reveal Jesus? As the Messiah, for the great mission He had undertaken as the Messenger of the Father’s Great Counsel. And what is this great counsel of the Father? The salvation of mankind. This was the work of Jesus Christ. “And David the Prophet cried aloud, saying.”
The Prophet cried aloud: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your companions.” David says this in Psalm 44. Here, the words “O God” are not in the nominative case. In the words, “O God, my God, attend to me,” they are not nominatives, but vocatives—forms of direct address.
“My God, O my God, attend to me.” “O God, my God, attend to me.” “Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy.” It is the vocative—that is, “Have mercy on me, O God,” and so forth. Now pay attention here: “Your throne, O God.” To whom is this addressed? It is addressed to the second person of the Holy Trinity: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever”—that is, an eternal throne. “A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom.” This means that, as man, You will reign unto the ages of ages. “You have loved righteousness.”
“And hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You.” It says: therefore, O God, Your God has anointed You. In other words: O God, God Your Father has anointed You. Do you see? The Son is God, and the Father is God; nevertheless, God is one. “With the oil of gladness above Your companions.” With what did He anoint You? With the oil of gladness. I will not yet explain the word “gladness”; Saint Cyril will explain it a little further on. “Above Your companions.” Who are the companions of Jesus Christ? They are His twelve disciples. You received an anointing far surpassing that of
Your companions. In other words, You received a unique anointing that Your companions did not receive—an anointing corresponding to Your mission. You see, if we examine the prophecies carefully, they are often nothing other than history foretold. Here, of course, the disciples received the Holy Spirit, but they did not receive Him by nature, nor did they possess Him as Jesus Christ did. In Christ’s case, the Spirit of God simply reveals who He is. I repeat: He did not come in order to remain in Him. Christ always had the Holy Spirit; He had Him at all times. I say this again. Why, then, is this manifestation called an anointing here?
Because it refers to His appointment and public manifestation. The high priest was anointed, and the king was anointed. Remember Samuel, who anointed David; before him, he had anointed Saul. It is called the oil of gladness because this anointing brings gladness and joy. Saint Cyril will explain this a little further on.
“Just as Christ was truly crucified, buried, and raised, while in Baptism you were counted worthy, in likeness, to be crucified, buried, and raised together with Him, so it is also with Chrismation.” Just as Christ was truly crucified, truly buried, and truly raised, so through Baptism, in the likeness of His death, you entered into the likeness of the Cross, the likeness of His burial, and the likeness of the Resurrection. We spoke about these things in the previous catechesis, as you will remember. It is the same here.
Let me add something Saint Cyril repeatedly said in the previous catechesis. Yes, it is in likeness, but the salvation is real. I remind you of this: the salvation is real, even though we were not crucified, did not die, and underwent none of those things literally. But in the likeness—which is Baptism, the water of the font—we participate in the likeness of what Christ suffered. “So it is also with Chrismation,” he now says. In the same way, it is so with the anointing. “He was anointed with the spiritual oil of gladness, that is, with the Holy Spirit.” He—Christ—was anointed
with the spiritual anointing, the anointing of gladness, which is the Holy Spirit. “It is called the oil of gladness because He is Himself the cause of spiritual gladness.” This is a parenthetical explanation. It is called “the oil of gladness” because it is the cause that brings spiritual gladness to man. That is the parenthesis. “But you were anointed with chrism, becoming communicants and companions of Christ.” You, however, were anointed with chrism, with oil. What is this oil? It is the antitype of Christ’s anointing, which is spiritual.
You were anointed with oil and became communicants and companions of Christ. Pay close attention here: “But see to it that you do not suppose this chrism to be mere oil.” You know that we keep the Holy Chrism in stoppered vessels and guard it carefully. We receive it from Constantinople, as the Orthodox throughout the world receive it from the Patriarchate of Constantinople, as a mark of honor. The rite for preparing the Holy Chrism itself is great and very elaborate. Pay attention: all the Churches throughout the world receive it from
there. We keep it in the sanctuary and take care that no one steals it. You may ask, “If someone stole it, what would they do with it?” People take it for magical purposes. Indeed, more than twenty-five years ago, a woman told me how the devil had driven her to this. A sorceress had told her to steal Holy Chrism, put it on her lips—I have told you this before—and kiss her husband so that he would love her. Now pay attention. Pay attention to what Saint Cyril is about to tell us.
“But see to it that you do not suppose this chrism to be mere oil.” Do not imagine that the Holy Chrism is mere—that is, bare or ordinary—oil. Do not suppose such a thing. Listen to the example he gives. What he writes is very important, and he will, of course, say the same in the next catechesis concerning Holy Communion: “For just as the bread of the Eucharist, after the invocation of the Holy Spirit, is no longer ordinary bread...” When the bread and wine are upon the Holy Table and the prayer for the celebration of the Mystery has been offered, it is no longer mere bread, but the Body of Christ.
“So also this Holy Chrism is no longer mere or, as one might say, common oil after the invocation, but the gift of Christ; and through the presence of the Holy Spirit, it becomes effective by His divinity.” Just as the bread and wine, after the invocation, are no longer ordinary bread and wine but the Body and Blood of Christ—although Saint Cyril mentions the Body here without referring to the wine—so too, through the prayer, and what a prayer it is, offered by a great number of bishops when the Holy Chrism is prepared, this is no longer mere oil. It is something awe-inspiring.
It becomes effective through the Holy Spirit. It is a gift of Christ: “but the gift of Christ.” Pay attention here: “becoming effective by His divinity.” It becomes an instrument of divine action; God acts through it. And there is one short phrase on which I wish to dwell: “and through the presence of the Holy Spirit.” Pay attention to what this oil is. Pay close attention, because of what follows from this: “through the presence of the Holy Spirit.” Yes, pay attention.
What is the Holy Chrism? The Holy Chrism is a material bearer of the presence of the Holy Spirit. I will repeat the phrase: the oil bears “the presence of the Holy Spirit.” Do you know what this means? It means that the Holy Spirit is available to us, for we have this presence at all times in the Holy Chrism, since it serves as a bearer of the Holy Spirit. When we say “bearer,” we mean that the Holy Spirit rests upon it and acts through this oil, this chrism. In precisely the same way, the relics of the Saints, having partaken
of the Body and Blood of Christ, are no longer ordinary bones, but tangible signs of the presence of the Holy Spirit. For the same reason, the relics of the Saints also work miracles. I have told you these things before, but that does not matter. It is good for us to hear them again and again. We are not giving a formal lecture; we are teaching a lesson. So what are the relics of the Saints? They are tangible points of contact with the presence of the Holy Spirit and His gifts. Someone is ill; we place the relics of a Saint upon him,
and he becomes well. How? The Holy Spirit acted through the relics of the Saint. Why? Because while that person was alive, he was a communicant of the Holy Spirit. And even after he has died, the Holy Spirit does not separate Himself from him, as Saint Nicholas Cabasilas says most beautifully in one of his prayers: “Lord”—it is a prayer—“Lord, Your divinity was not separated from the body that lay in the tomb, nor from the soul that was in Hades.” In the same way,
the Holy Spirit is separated neither from the body of Your Saint, or of Your Saints, which lies in the tomb, nor from the Saint’s soul, which is in Paradise. Thus we see the Holy Spirit united both with the body in the Saint’s tomb and with the Saint’s soul in Paradise. It is astounding. This is why the Saints work miracles. The Holy Spirit works miracles on behalf of the Saints whom God desires to honor. Would you like another example? What happens when a Saint touches an object? John Chrysostom says, “It is not only the relics that work miracles, but also the reliquaries in which the relics are kept”—that is, the caskets and even the tomb itself receive grace. Likewise, when a Saint handles an object during his lifetime, that object also becomes a bearer of uncreated grace. What is the proof? The personal belongings that came into contact with the Saint’s skin. Would you like yet another example? This is also why we have what are called wonderworking icons. An
iconographer who possessed the Spirit of God painted the icon, and now that icon becomes a bearer of divine grace. So what do you think happens if an iconographer, while painting an icon, smokes a cigarette and curses—even if he otherwise considers himself a good person? Can he impart sanctification to the icon? It is impossible, impossible. The iconographers of old fasted and continually said the Jesus Prayer. Thus, what they handed down to us is not merely masterpieces of art. For what kind of art is at issue here? The art of expression.
What do we want the icon to express? The faith and the dogma, certainly, but also, in a certain sense, to transmit grace, so that these icons may be wonderworking. You see, then, that these things possess a sacred character.
Once, near Jericho, some people were taking a man to be buried. The man had died, and they were carrying him outside the city to bury him some distance away. There they realized that robbers were approaching. Near the place where they spotted the robbers was the tomb of the Prophet Elisha. Holy Scripture tells us this, yes.
It is in Fourth Kingdoms. Then this happened: when the men saw the robbers, they were frightened, threw the dead man into the tomb of Elisha, and ran for their lives. And what was the result? The dead man came into contact with the tomb and the relics of the Prophet Elisha—and do you know what happened? He rose from the dead. He rose from the dead; Holy Scripture says so. And since the heretics, the Protestants, deny all these things, let us learn once again what Orthodoxy means. Thank you for listening.

Το Πνεύμα το Άγιον κατασκευάζει την ανθρωπίνη φύση του Χριστού και ούτως ενοικεί ο Θεός Λόγος. Το Πνεύμα το Άγιον κατασκευάζει· εκείνη η κατασκευή είναι άμοιρη Αγίου Πνεύματος; Ποτέ, ποτέ. Το Πνεύμα το Άγιον ποτέ δεν εχωρίσθη ούτε από το πρόσωπο του Θεού Λόγου, αφού είναι μία ουσία, ούτε από την ανθρωπίνη φύση, αφού παν το πλήρωμα της Θεότητος, λέει ο Απόστολος Παύλος, κατοικεί στον Ιησού. Όλο το πλήρωμα θα πει γέμισμα. Πληρώ, πληρώ, γεμίζω, φέρω εις πληρότητα. Δεν υπάρχει κάτι που να λείπει. Πώς θα έλειπε το Πνεύμα το Άγιο; Είναι δυνατόν;
τους μετόχους σου. Δηλαδή μοναδικό χρίσμα πήρες, που δεν το πήραν οι μέτοχοί σου, δηλαδή η αποστολή σου. Βλέπετε, οι προφητείες πολλές φορές, αν έτσι τις δει κανείς καλά, δεν είναι παρά ό,τι μετά η ιστορία. Και εδώ βέβαια οι μαθητές πήραν το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, αλλά δεν το πήραν φυσικά ή δεν το έχουν, δεν το είχαν όπως ο Ιησούς Χριστός, που το Πνεύμα του Θεού απλώς τον αναδεικνύει. Ξαναλέγω, δεν ήρθε να μείνει. Το είχε πάντα ο Χριστός το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, το είχε πάντοτε. Το ξαναλέγω αυτό. Λοιπόν, γιατί είπε εδώ ότι είναι το χρίσμα αυτό χρίσμα;
εκεί. Αυτό το φυλάττομε μέσα στο ιερό και προσέχομε να μην μας το κλέψει κανείς. Δηλαδή, να μας το κλέψει· αν μου πείτε τι θα το κάνει, το παίρνουν για μαγικούς σκοπούς. Ναι, μου έλεγε εδώ και 25 παραπάνω χρόνια μία κυρία: εκεί την έσπρωξε ο διάβολος. Αυτό της είπε η μάγισσα, να πάει να κλέψει, να κλέψει Άγιο Μύρο, να το βάλει στα χείλη της — σας έχω ξαναπεί αυτό — να φιλήσει τον άνδρα της, για να την αγαπάει. Λοιπόν, προσέξτε τώρα. Προσέξτε τώρα αυτό του Αγίου Κυρίλλου. Τι θα μας πει;
