Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s third Mystagogical Catechesis presents Chrismation as a distinct and necessary sacrament received together with Baptism. The Incarnation and the transformation of bread and wine into Christ’s Body and Blood reveal the inseparable work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God’s predestination rests upon His foreknowledge rather than coercion, while the risen Christ’s tangible body guarantees the believer’s promised glorification.

With God’s help, beloved, we now enter the third Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. Its title is “The Third Mystagogical Catechesis, on Chrismation,” with a reading from the First Epistle of John, beginning with, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things,” and ending with, “and not be ashamed before Him at His Second Coming.”
With God’s help, we enter the third catechesis. As I should tell you from the outset, after Baptism—the Mystery of Baptism—we have the Mystery of Chrismation.
Nowadays, in the Church, Chrismation is administered at the same time as Baptism. For this reason, many people think that Chrismation is simply a continuation of Baptism. But there are two Mysteries: Baptism and Chrismation. And Chrismation...
is a necessary Mystery. It is not optional, as Holy Orders, Holy Matrimony, or Holy Unction are. The same applies to metanoia, or repentance—that is, the Mystery of Holy Confession. If someone does not sin, he is not obliged to confess. Or if he dies after his Baptism, he has no need to confess. But three Mysteries are necessary. By “necessary,” we mean those that contribute to man’s salvation: Baptism, Chrismation, and the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. These three. Note that Chrismation is nothing other than the acquisition, so to speak, of...
the Holy Spirit. For if I do not have the Spirit of God, I cannot be spiritual. I am called a spiritual person precisely because I have the Spirit of God. And when I do not have the Spirit of God, I cannot speak of salvation. Salvation is impossible without the presence and the acquisition of the Holy Spirit. In fact, Saint Seraphim of Sarov and others interpret the Parable of the Ten Virgins by saying that it is not concerned only with good works, the oil, and so forth. Rather, the oil represents good works...
while the light sustained by the oil is the Holy Spirit. Yet I cannot have the Holy Spirit unless the necessary conditions are present; nor can I speak only of oil without possessing the Spirit of God. I may have oil but no light, or light for a moment but no oil. But in Christ I must have oil so that I may also have light. That this is so—at least as far as the words themselves are concerned, since the meaning emerges from many passages of Holy Scripture—is shown by the Apostle Paul’s words: “Do not quench the Spirit.”
The ending “-te” is written with an epsilon: “Do not quench the Holy Spirit.” This means that the Spirit is like a fire that I can put out. How can I quench the Holy Spirit? When I blow upon a candle, it goes out. In the same way, when my life becomes such that the Holy Spirit cannot remain within me, I quench the Holy Spirit. I become an extinguished candle, and then I cannot speak of salvation. The Parable of the Ten Virgins therefore shows that five of the virgins remained outside and received the verdict, “I do not know you.”
“I do not know you.” Is that not terrible? Therefore, if we do not receive the Spirit of God in this present life, we have accomplished nothing. We receive the Spirit of God through the Mystery of Chrismation, as we shall see. If this were unnecessary or superfluous, why did Christ tell His disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they had received the Holy Spirit? Was Christ’s sacrifice not sufficient? Was Christ Himself not sufficient? Why, then, did they also have to receive the Holy Spirit? I have told you before, but there is no harm in refreshing our memory, that the Apostle Paul expresses the nature of salvation very concisely:
“in Christ Jesus, in the Holy Spirit.” He does not say merely, “in Christ Jesus,” but, “in Christ Jesus, in the Holy Spirit.”
For otherwise Pentecost would have been superfluous. This does not mean that Christ could not have granted salvation—far be it from us! Rather, God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and the whole Godhead brings about man’s salvation. Consequently, we have absolute need of the Holy Spirit. As I told you before, salvation is both Christological—centered on Christ—and Pneumatological—centered on the Holy Spirit.
The Church, likewise, is both Christological and Pneumatological. What does this mean? These are the two aspects of the Church: Christ establishes His Church on earth, while the Holy Spirit sustains the Church of Christ on earth. When we celebrate the Mystery of the Church, namely the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, how do we celebrate it? We have wine and bread so that we may receive the Body and Blood of Christ. But how do they become the Body and Blood of Christ? We ask the Father to send down His Holy Spirit and change the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.
You see all three Persons of the Holy Trinity. We therefore cannot live without the Holy Spirit. And did not the Incarnation of Christ take place in the Holy Spirit? What did the angel say to the Theotokos? “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and overshadow you.” Just as the Incarnation took place through the Holy Spirit, so too the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ through the Holy Spirit. Nor can we speak of spiritual life without the Holy Spirit. It is impossible; such a life does not exist. Christ and the Holy Spirit are bound together and cannot be divided.
The economy of the Father—forgive me—the economy of the Son and the economy of the Holy Spirit. All these things are expressed through the Mystery of Chrismation. And we shall see, my beloved, how wonderfully Saint Cyril speaks about this Mystery. Let us enter the text: “Having been baptized into Christ and having put on Christ, you have become conformed to the Son of God.” To whom is he speaking? To those who have now been illumined, those who have been baptized. And on what day did he give this catechesis, since it is the third?
They were baptized on the day of Pascha. If the first Mystagogical Catechesis was given on Monday of Bright Week, and the second Mystagogical Catechesis on the third day of Bright Week, then the third Mystagogical Catechesis, on Chrismation, was given on Wednesday of Bright Week. We know this from information within the text itself, which shows us when this catechesis was delivered. It was, of course, given in Jerusalem, in the Church of the Resurrection built by Saint Helen, and we are speaking of the year AD 350. Saint Cyril, therefore, is addressing these newly baptized Christians.
He says to them: “You who have been baptized into Christ and have put on Christ”—you have clothed yourselves with Christ. Yes, you have clothed yourselves with Him. Does not the Apostle Paul say, “As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ”? We also chant this in the service: “Alleluia. As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Alleluia.” Apart from “Alleluia,” which means “Praise God,” these are the words of the Apostle Paul. Why does he say that we have “put on Christ”?
My beloved, we already spoke about this in the first Mystagogical Catechesis. But there is no harm in saying a few words about it again. We took off the former tunic—not the first tunic, but the previous one—and put on the tunic called Christ. What was that former tunic? It was the garment of skin. Does Holy Scripture not say that God—and which God? God the Word (Logos)—clothed our first-created ancestors in garments of skin? These were symbols of irrationality and spiritual death. Why irrationality? Because animals do not possess reason.
They do not have rational understanding. And man, sadly, would thereafter remain within the realm of what we may call, in quotation marks, “Satan’s irrationality.” Why do I put “Satan’s irrationality” in quotation marks? Because Satan is a rational being. But because he sinned, he became irrational and entered into the perversion of reason. Thus we have rationality, lack of reason, and the perversion of reason. Furthermore, man would follow the will of Satan. That is why. The second symbol is spiritual deadness. An animal—or rather, the skin of an animal...
is dead.
This image is often used. Consider, for example, the tambourines struck by Miriam, the sister of Moses, as they sang the First Ode of Moses, and so forth. The Fathers interpret those tambourines as the mortification of the passions. Here too there is death, but sadly it is not the mortification of the passions. It is spiritual death—that is, the absence of the Holy Spirit. We now take off that garment of skin, which we put on when God sent us out of Paradise, and we put on the new tunic, the tunic called Christ.
Indeed, “tunic” is one of the names of Christ. How beautifully this is expressed and emphasized in Holy Scripture, and how often the Fathers use it. Saint Symeon the New Theologian calls both the Son and the Holy Spirit a tunic. I should tell you that many names belonging to the Son are also applied to the Holy Spirit. Is not the Son also called footwear? Remember the Parable of the Prodigal Son, in which sandals were placed on the son who had returned. The Holy Spirit is also called footwear. Read, too, that passage beginning, “and living...”
And so on. Please read that marvelous prayer of Saint Symeon the New Theologian to the Holy Spirit, and you will see how many names are ascribed to Him that He shares with Jesus Christ. Thus, just as I put on Christ, I also put on the Holy Spirit. And there is that passage in the Old Testament, in the Song of Songs, which says... Now, someone—a lady or a gentleman, I do not know, but it does not matter—passed me a note here. I mention this in passing. Do you remember that I told you, God willing, perhaps one day we might also interpret the Song of Songs?
I am thinking about it, though I have not yet decided. I told you that I found a most beautiful aid by Saint Gregory of Nyssa, who interprets this book of the Old Testament—a profoundly theological and ascetic book, though it speaks in the language of love—and one that the neptic Fathers, the Fathers of watchfulness, use extensively. So, a gentleman or lady writes to me on a note: “For God’s sake, please do not interpret this book for us, because we are already immersed in sensuality and it will do us harm.” Well, I do not think that is a sufficient argument. Nevertheless, it does contain a measure of truth. Gregory of Nyssa himself says that the interpretation of this book...
should be heard only by those who are very spiritual people. Now, there it says that the bride had closed her door, washed her feet, undressed, and gone to bed to sleep. Then someone knocks at the door. This comes a little later and is not precisely the passage I meant to cite, but I want to illustrate something. He knocks at the door: “Open to me.” It is the bridegroom. And she says, “How can I dress again to open the door for you? I have taken off my tunic.”
“I have taken off my tunic. How,” she says, “can I put it on again to open the door for you?” How do the Fathers interpret the words, “I have taken off my tunic”? Which tunic? The former tunic of irrationality, the tunics of skin. Yet the bride was unable to understand that there was a new garment for her to put on. And that garment is the One knocking at her door from outside: Jesus Christ. He is the garment. It is He whom we have put on. Let me add something else. You see, these thoughts arise by association; I have not... They simply arise by association. Nicholas Cabasilas says...
in his book The Life in Christ: How closely can a human being—that is, the human soul—be joined to the body, and the body to its members? How close can this union be? This close: someone can cut off my finger, cut off my whole hand, cut off my whole leg, or put out my eye. We see here that the bond is certainly organic, yet even this organic bond can be severed. Someone could even strip off my skin and flay me alive.
He says: You have put on Christ and have become so organically clothed in Him, so organically united with Him, that no one can take Him away from you or strip you of Christ. We put on Christ. Neither persecutors nor tyrants can remove from me the tunic that is Christ, unless I myself choose it. They may strip away my skin, but they cannot strip away Christ. How close, then, is the union of every baptized believer with Christ? Incomparably closer than the union of my body with my skin.
Closer still—so that we may understand what this so-called tunic of Christ is: it is Christ Himself. This is what Saint Cyril says. I will not dwell on it any longer. “Having put on Christ, you have become conformed to the Son of God.” Having put on Christ, what have we become? Conformed to the Son of God. What does “conformed” mean? It means having the same form. And what does “form” mean? A shape, something formed. We might use a borrowed word and call it a mold. I think that word must be foreign rather than Greek. What is it—Turkish? I do not know. I will look it up and tell you.
We call it a mold. “Form” is also a foreign word: form, to form, a form. If I have a mold and put a dessert into it, then remove the dessert, it immediately takes the shape of the mold. The Apostle Paul says in his Epistle to the Romans, “Do not be conformed to this age,” and so forth. What does it mean to be conformed? It means to enter into the same shape—the same form, the same mold—as the world. In plain language we could say: Do not let yourselves be molded according to the mold of this world.
When he says, “We have become conformed to the Son of God,” what does he mean? He means that I have entered into the same mold, the same form. Forgive me: the formed image is the result produced after I have entered the mold. Notice also that the words for “form” and “formed image”—form in foreign languages—are Greek words. The word went to Europe, and afterward we claimed that it was not Greek. Its root is Greek, if not the entire word itself.
A brief aside, just to show you what can happen to words. We use the word “skambo,” meaning a stool.
Someone might simply call it a small stool, but we say “skambo.” What is this word “skambo”? We claim that it is foreign. Who told you that? It is Greek. It traveled to Europe under the name skimpous, with the genitive skimpodos, and then returned to Greece Europeanized—Europeanized by the European Economic Community—as “skambo.” But the word is Greek. Here is another example. In Greek, the word “classical” is written with one sigma. It went abroad as “classic,” “classicism,” and so forth. But in those languages they cannot represent the sigma sound there unless they write the letter twice. They use a double s to produce the s sound, because a single s in the middle of a word is pronounced like z.
Otherwise, it would be pronounced “clazic” and “clazicism.” So, to produce the s sound, they write two s’s. Then the word returns to Greece, and now we write it with two sigmas. That is wrong! It is written with one sigma. And so on. I tell you these things to give you a little rest—unless I am confusing you even more. Now then, my dear ones, what does “conformed” mean? We have said all this so that we may understand what it means to have become conformed to the Son of God. It is an inward likeness. Just as the mold produces a formed image, and the resulting image resembles the mold that shaped it, so it is here.
It is as though Christ were the mold producing many images shaped according to Himself. Yet this likeness is inward. There is something here to which we should pay attention, as Theophylact of Ohrid explains. This formation—from the verb “to form”—means to give shape. The Apostle Paul says, “My little children, I labor in birth.” I undergo the labor pains of a woman about to give birth, “until Christ is formed...”
“in you.” I labor in birth until you come forth from the mold that is Christ.
Did you hear that? Did you hear? It means that you enter into Christ and come forth Christlike—truly Christlike. And the Apostle labors in birth for this very work. Theophylact of Ohrid now says: “What the Only-Begotten is by nature, you also have become by grace.”
What the Son is by nature in relation to the Father, we become by grace. Does Holy Scripture not say that Jesus Christ is “the image of the invisible God”? He is the perfect image of the Father, but by nature.
The essence is one. We will be formed according to Christ, but by grace. And I think one word expresses very well everything we have said. I have already given it to you: we are to become Christlike.
The Greek word eidos means appearance or form. Do you know how it is accented in ancient Greek? With a smooth breathing and a circumflex. In ancient Greek, eidos also means form. We say, “His appearance was...” What appearance? His form, his countenance, his outward shape. So we see these related ideas: appearance, form, formed image, and conformity—all pointing to the inward likeness we are to receive.
In other words, we are truly to become Christlike. This is exceedingly great and important. Let us continue.
“For God, having predestined us for adoption as sons, made us conformed to the body of Christ’s glory.” And he continues: “For having predestined us”—because God predestined us for adoption as sons, He makes us conformed; He made us conformed to the body of Christ’s glory. We could not draw near to God unless we possessed precisely this condition: being conformed to the glory of Christ’s body. Let me remind you of a parable spoken by Christ:
The Great Supper—no, forgive me, the supper at the wedding feast of the king’s son. Those who entered had been invited; many were called. For the examination afterward to make sense, the parable presupposes that at the entrance they were to receive a robe, a wedding garment. Yet someone entered without one. How did he get in? This, of course, belongs to the construction of the parable, so that the Lord can reveal what He wishes to teach. The host therefore approached him and said, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” Now here...
The two essentially coincide, but allow me to make a distinction. Earlier we said that the garment is Christ. Here, however, it is called a wedding garment. What is this wedding garment? It is again Christ, but with this clarification: the wedding garment is precisely what is described here—becoming conformed to Christ and resembling His glorious body. At a wedding, for example, if the bridegroom is wearing formal evening dress—allow me this image—then all the other guests at a formal wedding also dress formally.
Would anyone attend such a formal wedding in blue jeans? They would say to him, “What is going on here?” The guests, then, must resemble the bridegroom in their attire. That is also the meaning of the statement that we shall be conformed to Christ’s glorious body. This is what the parable teaches. As I told you, Christ said that you must have the wedding garment in order to enter. How could it be otherwise? It cannot. So the text says, “God predestined us for adoption as sons.” Because He predestined us, He made us conformed to Christ’s glorious body.
Were you troubled by the word “predestined”? Do not be. He did not predestine us against our will, for then every gift God offers us would lose its value. Since God created us free, such a kind of predestination would abolish our freedom. God predestines “those whom He foreknew,” as the Apostle Paul says in his Epistle to the Romans: “Those whom He foreknew, He also predestined; and those whom He predestined, He also justified.”
So He justifies those whom He predestines. And when does He predestine them? Listen: to predestine means to determine something beforehand. But when does He do so? In the case of those whom He foreknew. Did God not know, before I began to exist, what sort of person I would be? My dear friends, you know that God knows the whole of humanity before bringing it into existence. He knows who will be saved, who will not be saved, and how each person will respond. Do you think Judas was not known before creation, before the foundation of the world? How, after all, is Christ presented in the Apocalypse? He is presented as a Lamb...
Slain—listen to this remarkable expression—before the foundation of the world. Before the world came into being, He was already the slain Lamb. We have two elements here: the word “Lamb” and the additional word “slain,” which may seem redundant but is nevertheless necessary. A slain lamb signified sacrifice, because lambs were offered in sacrifice. “Slain” means that this Lamb has already been sacrificed. And Christ is the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world. In other words, Christ is presented in His Incarnation and sacrifice before the world came into being, before the universe existed. Would God, then, not have known Annas and Caiaphas?
Or Judas and Pilate? He knows every one of us. Everyone. Everything, down to the smallest detail. He knows even what we ourselves could never know about ourselves. What, then, does “He predestined us” mean here? It does not mean that He determined our choice for us. Rather, He predestined those whom He foreknew, knowing beforehand what they would be. Let us say, for example, that out of a thousand there will be one hundred. For those hundred, He says, “I shall do this and this.” Thus He does not predestine in the troubling sense I mentioned, nor is human freedom abolished. The human person remains free.
The human person freely comes and offers himself to God. God, however, already knows this and creates what He will bestow. And what does He create? The body of Christ, so that Christ’s body may become the pattern according to which we shall receive a glorified body—the glorified human body of the Son of God. This is why the text says, “God predestined us for adoption as sons.” In order to make us His children, we had to resemble the One who is by nature...
The Son, Jesus Christ. We had to resemble Him. We are children by grace, and He makes us conformed to Christ’s glorious body. What, then, is this glorious body of Christ? Pay close attention. It is well known that human nature, in the hypostasis—the person—of Christ, opened the way beforehand. It blazed the trail. To open the way beforehand means to clear and make a road. Christ’s human nature opened the way toward what we shall become: resurrection, incorruption, and immortality. We shall be incorruptible.
We shall be immortal, because we shall rise from the dead. Who accomplished all this? The human nature of Christ. Therefore, we must become conformed—that is, become as Christ’s body is. This is what it means to be conformed to Christ’s glorious body. Christ is immortal—not simply as the Son of God, but in His human nature—and I too shall be immortal. He rose, and I too shall rise. He is immortal, and I too shall be immortal. He is incorruptible, and I too shall be incorruptible. Thus He has opened the way before us.
He opened the way for us to become what He is. Blessed is the Son of God, and blessed also are we. He is in His Kingdom, and we too shall be in His Kingdom. This is what it means that He “opened the way.” It is astonishing, my dear friends. Do you understand? Earlier, while answering the questions, we were discussing whether Christianity is merely a religion or whether it is the truth. These things are not an abstract idea. They are sheer reality—“psili” with an iota—bare reality. They are not mere words that someone might put together with literary skill. Let him say whatever he likes. No, no.
We touched the body that rose incorruptible and immortal. We saw it, touched it again and again, and saw it ascend into heaven. And we received the assurance that the Lord would return in the same way. Is this merely a mental conception, an imagining, or a fabrication? Or is it a tangible reality? In the opening of his First Epistle, what does the Evangelist John—the eyewitness—say again and again? “That which we beheld, that which we saw.” “We saw; we beheld.” The word “beheld” is...
Forceful.
Stronger than the other word. The Greek verb theaomai, “to behold,” is stronger than horao, “to see.” “And our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life”—that is, Jesus Christ. This is concrete reality. Thomas said, “Unless I... I will not believe.” “Come here, Thomas. See My pierced hands and My side wounded by the spear.” Is the body that proves all this merely a mental construct? This is why our faith must be firm. Many people say, “But how can I know this?” Then come questions about whether someone believed, investigations, and endless exchanges of “you said this” and “I said that.”
The body itself is the proof. The people who bore witness concerning Jesus also gave their lives as martyrs. No one is ever martyred for a lie, but for the truth. So, my dear friends, you see how matters stand and how important this is. “Having become partakers of Christ, you are rightly called christs; and concerning you God said, ‘Do not touch My christs.’” Having become partakers of Christ—partakers, partakers. Since He opened the way for us, since we resemble Him, since—since—you are rightly...
Called christs. Naturally, you are called “Christoi”—always spelled with an iota. Thus I too am a christ, and each one of us is a christ, because we have become like Christ. This is why I told you that the word “Christlike” expresses everything. But what does it mean to say, “I am a christ”? Before explaining it, Saint Cyril says something else. What does “I am a christ” mean? Do you know? It means that I have been anointed. I am getting slightly ahead of myself, but that is what it means: I have been anointed. This is also why Christ is called Christ.
Jesus is called Christ because He is anointed. We shall examine this later, for Saint Cyril will explain it very fully. Before doing so, however, Saint Cyril says that God spoke also about us—about you, the newly illumined—when He said, “Do not touch My christs.” Do not touch those who are My christs. I should tell you that this is written in Psalm 104. It refers to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs, in relation to the people who surrounded them—the peoples of the land of Canaan.
Concerning Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, God said, “Do not touch those who are My christs,” meaning those whom He had anointed. We are not speaking here about the Mystery of Chrismation. You see, little by little I am entering into our subject. They were anointed; they possessed an anointing. “Do not harm them, or you will sin.” Later Saint Cyril will tell us that we are called Christians because we are christs: we have been anointed. Indeed, on one occasion a king in the land of Canaan committed a certain sin.
He wronged Abraham in some way, and God said that Abraham must pray for him. Abraham was the Lord’s christ, because when God told him, “Rise and leave your homeland,” and so forth, He anointed him. What does that mean? He made Abraham His christ, the one whom He had anointed. “My prophet will pray,” God said, “so that I may forgive you.” Listen to this astonishing thing: God does not forgive him directly but asks for the intercession of His christ, Abraham—His christ and His prophet. Where are the Protestants who reject the...
Intercession of the Saints? Where are they? What can they say? You see, then, that God will forgive only when Abraham prays. Astonishing! These people, therefore, are christs. If you turn to the Psalter, you will see this there, and throughout the Old Testament as well. Who are these christs of the Lord? David was the Lord’s christ. Saul, before David, was also the Lord’s christ. When David and his companions were deep inside the cave, while Saul was hunting David in order to kill him, Saul—unaware that David was in the depths of the cave—went and lay down to sleep at its entrance...
Saul. David’s companions said to him, “God has delivered your enemy into your hands. Kill him.” But David replied, “Could I ever kill the Lord’s christ, His anointed one? For the king is the Lord’s christ.” In the Old Testament, the high priests—and only the high priests, one high priest followed by his successor, and so on—were christs of the Lord, because they were anointed with oil, just as at Baptism. After Baptism, we are anointed with Holy Chrism. But let us not get ahead of ourselves. Saint Cyril will explain all these things to us in their proper order. They will be very beautiful indeed, as we shall hear.
Since he uses the passage, “Do not touch my christs”—do not touch those whom I have anointed—we have explained what it means. But to whom does God address this command, that no one should touch those who are His christs? Above all, it is addressed to the demons. The demons cannot touch the Lord’s christ, which is each one of us. When is this true? When we have kept the garment of Baptism clean—the wedding garment, I mean; forgive me, the garment of Baptism. But what if we have not kept it clean? Does Saint Cyril not tell us in the first Mystagogical Catechesis, “Take care not to break faith with the…”? For the demons whom we drove away will return more bitter than they were when they first held you in their power. It is to them, then, that God says, “Do not harm those who are my christs.” And the demons greatly respect this command. Do you know how greatly? If the demons had to ask permission to enter the swine—“Allow us”—if they asked permission even to enter swine, how much less could they enter a human being on their own authority, assault him, and make him demon-possessed? This means that such a person had already stained the garment of his Baptism.
God now permits the demons to enter as a punishment for him. But let us continue. “You have become christs by receiving the antitype of the Holy Spirit; and everything has happened to us through images, since you are images of Christ.” This is an incomparable phrase—truly incomparable. He says that you have become christs. Let me say it again: the Greek word is always spelled with chi and iota. It comes from the verb chriō, “to anoint,” not from the verb chrēzō, which is spelled with an eta, as are chrēma and chrēsis. And the name Chrestos…”
Chrestos is spelled with an eta, not an iota. It is an ancient Greek name and is spelled with an eta. Derived from the word meaning “useful,” it was once given as a name to slaves. So take care over the spelling of your name, Chrestos. “You have become christs by receiving the antitype of the Holy Spirit.” What, then, is the antitype of the Holy Spirit? It is the oil, the Holy Chrism. Listen: you have received the antitype of the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril will explain this as well a little further on. We shall see that… But I shall say it here too, so that…”
Some things may be heard two or three times, so that they become firmly established within us. This oil is a material bearer of the Holy Spirit—listen carefully. In other words, through a material means I receive the Holy Spirit. But the Holy Spirit is spirit. Can He not enter me directly? Is He hindered by anything? Did God need the rod of Moses to make the sea withdraw and the dry land appear? He did not need it, but this is how God wills to act. In the same way, the oil—the Holy Chrism that we keep in the church…”
With which we anoint the newly baptized and celebrate the Mystery of Chrismation—is nothing other than, as I shall say once again, the material bearer of the Holy Spirit, because this is how God wills it. A little further on, Saint Cyril tells us, “But take care not to suppose that this chrism is merely ordinary oil.” Do not think that it is mere, bare, ordinary oil. No, no, no. He then gives the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist as an example. We shall come to that. What does he wish to show here? That the antitype—the material bearer of the Holy Spirit—is this oil. This, then, is what he is saying.
We have received it, “and everything has happened to us through images.” Everything happens to us through images, “since you are images of Christ.” This is a beautiful phrase. Because you are images of Christ, everything is offered to you by means of images. Baptism too, as we shall see: the baptismal font is an image of the Jordan, where Christ was baptized and where His very flesh touched the waters. Chrismation likewise is given through an image: the oil is the antitype of the Holy Spirit and the material bearer of the Holy…”
Spirit. Why is everything given through images? Because, he says, we human beings are images of Christ. And now, in the two minutes that remain, let me make a brief comment on this. Why did he say that we are images of Christ rather than images of God? Does Holy Scripture not say that God “made man in the image of God; He made him”? This is not an error, but a fuller explanation. The Fathers say—Saint Irenaeus, for example—that because the dogma of the Holy Trinity had not yet been revealed, Holy Scripture says that we were made in the image of God. But once the dogma of the Holy Trinity was revealed…”
This same truth could be stated more precisely, because Christ—Christ, not the Son of God—is the image of the invisible God. We, then, are images of Christ, and therefore the human being is an image of an image. We are the image of Christ, who is the image of God. And why are we the image of Christ rather than the image of God? Because the Son of God would enter creation according to this human form—what I am now, as you see me, and what you also are—and would become what we call a human being.
Adam, therefore, was created according to what the Son of God would become. In this way, the human being was made an image of Christ. Saint Cyril does not say an image of the Son of God; he says an image of Christ, because the name Christ always implies the presence of the human nature. May the Lord bless you.

Η οικονομία του Πατρός — συγγνώμη — η οικονομία του Υιού και η οικονομία του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Αυτά όλα εκφράζονται με το μυστήριο του Χρίσματος, το οποίο θα δούμε πόσο θαυμαστά ο Άγιος Κύριλλος αναφέρεται, αγαπητοί μου, στο μυστήριο αυτό. Και μπαίνουμε στο κείμενο: «Εις Χριστόν βαπτισθέντες και Χριστόν ενδυσάμενοι, σύμμορφοι γεγόνατε του Υιού του Θεού». Πού αποτείνεται; Προς τους φωτισμένους πια, τους βαπτισμένους. Και ποια μέρα ήτανε που έκανε αυτή την κατήχηση, εάν είναι η τρίτη κατήχηση;
Τους λέγει: «Εσείς που έχετε βαπτιστεί εις Χριστόν, εις Χριστόν βεβαπτισμένοι και Χριστόν ενδυσάμενοι», και ντυθήκατε τον Χριστόν. Και ντυθήκατε, ναι. Δεν λέγει ο Απόστολος Παύλος «ὅσοι εἰς Χριστὸν ἐβαπτίσθητε, Χριστὸν ἐνεδύσασθε»; Και το έχουμε αυτό και λέμε με τα Κατηχούμενα: «Ἀλληλούια. Ὅσοι εἰς Χριστὸν ἐβαπτίσθητε, Χριστὸν ἐνεδύσασθε. Ἀλληλούια». Είναι φράσεις, εκτός του «Ἀλληλούια», που θα πει «αἰνεῖτε τὸν Θεόν», είναι φράσεις του Αποστόλου Παύλου. Γιατί λέει «ενδυσάμενοι τον Χριστόν»;
Λοιπά και λοιπά. Διαβάσετε, παρακαλώ, εκείνη τη θαυμασία προσευχή του Αγίου Συμεών εις το Άγιο Πνεύμα, να δείτε πόσα ονόματα αποδίδονται που είναι κοινά με τον Ιησού Χριστό. Έτσι, λοιπόν, όπως ντύνομαι τον Χριστό, ντύνομαι και το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Και εκείνο που είναι στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, στο Άσμα Ασμάτων, που λέγει... Εκείνη... Κάποια κυρία ή κύριος, δεν ξέρω, δεν πειράζει, θα σας το πω έτσι τώρα, παρενθετικά το λέγω, μου έριξε εδώ ένα χαρτάκι. Θυμόσαστε που σας είπα ότι ο Θεός να δώσει κάποτε να αναλύσουμε και το Άσμα Ασμάτων;
Εσφαγμένον, ακούστε αυτό το περίεργο, προ καταβολής κόσμου. Πριν γίνει ο κόσμος, εσφαγμένον αρνίον. Έχουμε δύο στοιχεία: η έννοια αρνίον και η έννοια πλεοναστική, αλλά όμως αναγκαία παρ’ όλα αυτά, εσφαγμένον. Εσφαγμένον αρνίον σήμαινε θυσία, διότι τα αρνιά προσεφέροντο εις θυσίαν. Εσφαγμένον, αυτό το αρνί πια που ήδη εθυσιάστηκε. Και ο Χριστός είναι εσφαγμένον αρνίον προ καταβολής κόσμου. Δηλαδή, ο Χριστός φέρεται εν ενανθρωπήσει και εν θυσία πριν γίνει ο κόσμος, πριν γίνει το σύμπαν. Και δεν εγνώριζε λοιπόν τον Άννα, τον Καϊάφα ο Θεός;
