Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that baptism uses symbolic actions while granting real salvation and initiating the faithful into the mysteries of the Church. To become united with Christ requires an active response: believers must put sinful passions and the old self to death through repentance, prayer, fasting, vigilance, and purity of heart. Those who die to sin and the world live in Christ, with their hidden life destined to be revealed with Him in His Kingdom.

Dearly beloved, we are now at the sixth paragraph of the Second Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. His subject is Baptism. He gives this teaching to those who have already been baptized, those who have been illumined through Baptism. He offers them mystagogy—that is, an introduction into the Mysteries of the Church: Baptism, Chrismation, the Holy Eucharist, and the worship of the Church, which is the Divine Liturgy. Let us see what Saint Cyril says next.
In this catechesis, he has told us that Baptism consists of a series of symbols. These symbols present to the person being baptized an image of precisely what is accomplished in the life of the baptized believer. What I want you to remember—and Saint Cyril says this continually—is this: everything in Baptism is symbolic, but the salvation is real. The same would apply to every other Mystery. And so...
The salvation is real because, as we shall see, we say that we die in Baptism, although we do not actually die; it was Christ who died. We make use of this symbol of Christ’s death. Although we do not truly die when we undergo it—it is a symbol—we are truly saved. Never forget this. Let me give you Saint Cyril’s own words: “The imitation is in an image, but the salvation is in truth.” The salvation, then, is truly real.
Therefore, whatever fruits we receive from Baptism—and they are many—we truly do receive them. For example, we speak of the forgiveness of sins, and we truly receive the forgiveness of sins. We speak of adoption as children of God, and we truly receive that adoption. If you ask how we know this, it is better for me to take another Mystery, one that is more perceptible to the senses. Who tells us that the wine and the bread are the Body and Blood of Christ? Indeed, I told you this last time, and I say it again: this is the one Mystery in which we do not have symbols, but the reality itself.
The water in Baptism represents the tomb, but here the bread and the wine are truly the Body and Blood of Christ. They are not a symbol, as the Protestants believe, but truly the Body and Blood of Christ. How do we know? The answer is very simple: Christ told us. And how do we know that what Christ said is true? Christ rose from the dead and underwent the Ascension. Therefore, what He said is true. That settles it. The answer is very simple, and it is the answer we too must give ourselves in a moment of doubt.
He who said that this is His Body and His Blood rose from the dead and underwent the Ascension before many witnesses. Therefore, although I may not perceive it, and although the Body and Blood of Christ are a Mystery, they truly are the Body and Blood of Christ. In the same way, I may not perceive that my sins have been taken away and forgiven, and that I have been saved. I may not perceive it, but He who commanded us to be baptized also told us that our sins are forgiven. And so forth. Do you understand? For, my dear friends, if a philosopher told us that there would be a resurrection of the dead, then this...
One could doubt it. Plato said that there are forms in heaven. Did Plato see those forms in heaven? He also said that everything in this world is a likeness of the forms in heaven. Of course, like every philosopher, he needed some foundation on which to build. It is what we call a doctrine, a theory. But can Plato prove what he said? No. Or take materialism, which says that matter is eternal. Can it prove that? No. It is a theory. Christ, however, provided testimony to support what He taught. He gave many testimonies. But the great testimony is...
His Resurrection, which, as the Apostle Paul says, is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep, the pledge that the dead will rise. Therefore, what Christ says has nothing in common with what the philosophers say. Besides, Christ is not a philosopher, as some have tried to portray Him. He is not a philosopher. Do you understand? These are exceedingly powerful truths. Keep them, whether for others or for your own use—again, in a moment of doubt. And now let us read: the sixth paragraph, section tau.
“Let no one, then, suppose that Baptism grants only the forgiveness of sins and adoption as children of God, as the baptism of John granted only the forgiveness of sins. Rather, let him know precisely that, just as Baptism cleanses sins and brings the gift of the Holy Spirit, so it is also an antitype—a sacramental likeness—of the sufferings of Christ.”
He says—pardon me—that no one should think Baptism is only the forgiveness of sins or only for our adoption as children of God. Those are two distinct gifts. No, there is something more as well.
We become... Baptism is the antitype of the sufferings of Christ. It is an image, an antitype, not the prototype itself. And we are baptized into this antitype—that is, into the sufferings of Christ. There are therefore three things: the forgiveness of sins, adoption as children of God, and participation...
In the sufferings of Christ. This third element is extremely important. Without the first, we cannot enter the Kingdom of God—that is, without the forgiveness of our sins. Without the second, we cannot say, “Abba, Father”; we cannot call God our Father. And without the third, once again, we cannot enter the Kingdom of God. Saint Cyril therefore has much to say about this third element. Let us see what he says: “For it was concerning this that Paul, who had just spoken aloud, said...” By “had just spoken,” he means the apostolic passage that is read...
As the basis for his exposition in the Second Mystagogical Catechesis. What does the Apostle say? “Do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore, we were buried with Him through Baptism.” Romans 6:3–4. In other words, the Apostle says to the Romans: “Do you not know that all of us who were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ were baptized into His death?” And then he continues by saying that we share in His burial—that through Baptism we were buried together with Christ.
Saint Cyril now quotes the Apostle: “Perhaps he spoke in this way to certain people who believed that Baptism brings the forgiveness of sins and adoption as children of God, but that it does not also grant participation, through imitation, in the true sufferings of Christ.” In other words, when the Apostle Paul wrote these things, perhaps, Saint Cyril says, some of his readers believed that Baptism was only for the forgiveness of sins and adoption, and not for participation in the sufferings of Christ. But do you truly know this last point—that we become participants in the sufferings of Christ?
I should have asked you, since there are so many of you here, to raise your hand if you already knew about this third element. Who would have raised a hand? I am rather afraid—I suspect—that perhaps no one would have done so, simply because we were never taught it. Perhaps even we priests do not know it. Yet you will see in what follows how important this element is. We might say that the first two are passive on our part. The third is active. That is, I do nothing to bring about the forgiveness of my sins.
I do nothing to be called a child of God, but I must act if I am to enter into the sufferings of Christ. Thus, this third element is active. Shall I tell you something? Because this third element—becoming a participant in the sufferings of Christ—has grown weak, Christianity has become worldly. Our life has become worldly, and we can no longer understand that the Gospel is the way of the Cross. We cannot understand it because we have ignored this third element. Saint Cyril is therefore entirely justified...
Saint Cyril emphasizes this and carefully explains it. Let us see what he says. He says that, through imitation, we shall have communion in the true sufferings of Christ—in His true sufferings. Let us examine this: “So that we may know that everything Christ endured for us and for our salvation He suffered in truth and not merely in appearance, and that we too become participants in His sufferings, Paul proclaimed with the greatest precision: ‘For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death... we shall also share in His Resurrection.’ And the expression ‘united with Him’ is well chosen,” and so forth. In other words, we are to know that Christ endured suffering for our salvation, but also that we ourselves have communion in those sufferings.
It is well known that God never gives us His salvation one hundred percent without any response from us. Please pay close attention to this. I have mentioned this point to you many times before. God never offers His salvation one hundred percent without our participation. Ninety-nine percent may belong to God and one percent to man, but it is not given without our response. Saint Nicholas Cabasilas, in his teaching on the Divine Liturgy, says that when you offer your prosphoron and your wine, you have placed your own labor into them.
What does money represent? It represents labor. This is clear, because you do not offer wheat and grapes, but bread and wine. Thus, you offer something of your own labor in order to receive the great gift of the Body and Blood of Christ. These offerings will become His Body and Blood, which you will then receive back from God. Therefore, in order to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, I must offer something, and that something is the prosphoron and the wine, which, as I said, contain my labor. At this point Saint Nicholas recalls a passage—I believe it is from Isaiah—which says that the mercy of...
God, His mercy, is given by measure. As you know, measures here mean scales. How is God’s mercy offered? By measure. When we speak of scales, we mean justice; we mean giving and receiving. I give you one hundred drachmas and receive a kilogram of bread. Now, forgive me, bread has become more expensive! In any case, I give you one hundred drachmas and receive a kilogram of bread. What does this mean? I give to you, and you give to me. And God never offers His grace or His mercy without a response from us. Indeed, regarding God’s mercy—my goodness, what Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite writes in his book...
It is in the Nine Odes. What is the book called? The Garden of Graces. You know, Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite devotes page after page to the subject of mercy. For God to grant you His mercy, you too must offer something. “But then what kind of mercy is that?” you may ask. “What kind of grace is that?” This is how God wills it. If you offer nothing, you will receive nothing. And the tragedy is that, while we ask for God’s mercy, we offer nothing at all. Do you hear? In our prayer we say, “Lord, grant me Your mercy.” But what have you done? Have you shown metanoia—repentance? Have you prayed fervently? Have you fasted?
Have you labored? Do you have a contrite heart? Offer these things, and then God will grant you His mercy. “Oh, is that how it is?” Yes, that is how it is. Therefore, here too, for God to grant us adoption and the forgiveness of our sins, we must enter into communion with the sufferings of Christ. Did you know this? This is why we do not receive from God everything we ask of Him: we offer Him nothing. We have been deceived by the mistaken notion that grace means everything comes from God and nothing from us. But that is a delusion.
If we read Holy Scripture correctly, we would see this and recognize it clearly. But what does the Apostle say here? “For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall also be united with Him in His Resurrection.” What does “united with Him” mean? Saint Cyril explains: “The expression ‘united with Him’ is well chosen; for since the true vine has been planted here, we too, through communion in the Baptism of His death, have been planted together with Him.” The word means being grown together with Him. It comes from the Greek root meaning “to grow” or “to spring up.” You know, the root phy—
The root phy is very important indeed in the Greek language: to bring forth, to grow, to sprout, a plant, and so forth. So what does it mean to be “grown together”? It means that I have been grafted into the same plant. Do you hear? Grafted. What does grafted mean? We all know: inserted into the stock, as the term goes. Now, who is Christ? He is the true olive tree. We spoke about this olive tree last time. He is also the true vine, because the first vine, Israel, failed to fulfill its calling.
Christ will never fail. Thus, He is also the true olive tree, and we must now be grafted into that olive tree. When I place a graft into the trunk of a plant, I become—and now you will understand this very well—grown together with it, united in its very growth. That is the meaning of the expression: we have become united with Him. In Baptism, we are grafted into the sufferings of Christ. This happens, of course, through an image; but let me not explain it in my own words. Listen to how Saint Cyril puts it.
“The true vine has been planted here, and we too, through communion in the Baptism of His death, have been planted together with Him. Apply your nous, the spiritual intellect, with great attention to the Apostle’s words.” Pay close attention, he says, to what the Apostle is saying. He did not say, “If we have been united with His death,” but, “with the likeness of His death.” Notice carefully: he says that we were not grafted into Christ’s death itself, but into the likeness of Christ’s death. And the likeness of His death—not death itself, but its likeness—is the baptismal font. It is the baptismal font.
For there we have the likeness of Christ’s death. To be beneath the water is like being beneath the earth, and therefore signifies death. The threefold immersion and emergence signify the three days in Hades, in the earth, or in the heart of the earth. Then comes the final emergence, which is a type of the Resurrection: an image of Christ’s Resurrection and of our own resurrection. Thus, we receive the likeness of His death, not death itself. See how Saint Cyril says it: “For in Christ there was truly a real death.” Christ underwent an actual death.
“For upon the Cross His soul was separated from His body, and His burial was real.” Christ’s human soul was truly separated from His human body. Christ was upon the Cross—pardon me—His body was in the tomb, while His soul was in Hades. As that beautiful troparion says—brief, yet extraordinarily rich and precise in doctrine: “In Hades with the soul, and in the tomb bodily.” In Hades with the soul. In other words, the Word (Logos), who is God, was of course in the tomb, united with the body. Nevertheless, the body was separated from the soul, which descended into Hades. Christ truly died upon the Cross.
He was truly buried in the tomb. “For His holy body was wrapped in a clean linen cloth.” It was laid down and wrapped in clean linen, and everything that happened to Him happened in truth. Everything that happened to Christ was real. But do we die? “In our case, there is the likeness of death and sufferings.” We receive the likeness of both death and sufferings. We do not truly die; the soul is not separated from the body, nor do we actually undergo those sufferings. “But salvation is not a likeness.”
It is real. Here once again Saint Cyril repeats what we discussed last time and what I mentioned at the beginning of this talk: although we receive the likeness of death, our salvation is real. Do you understand? But I will develop this subject further.
I said earlier that the absence of this third element—the fact that we become united with the sufferings of Christ—has made us worldly and unable to understand the Gospel, because we failed to emphasize it. And it appears that even in the Apostle’s time it was not being emphasized. Does Saint Cyril not say so? Perhaps this is why the Apostle wrote these words: some people may have thought that Baptism grants only adoption and the forgiveness of sins. As I told you earlier, this has caused us to become worldly and unable to understand the Gospel. Do you see how this happened? What does it mean to become united with the sufferings and death of Christ?
The Apostle Paul says: “Put to death, therefore, your members which are upon the earth: fornication, evil desire, passion, and wickedness,” and so forth. Look at the verb he uses: “Put to death.” That means: bring about their death. The death of what? Of passion, evil desire, and so forth. This command, “Put to death,” reflects my participation in the sufferings of Christ, who was put to death. Since Christ was put to death and I was baptized into the likeness of His death, I must put to death the sin dwelling in my flesh. He did not say, “Put to death the sexual instinct within Holy Matrimony.” He did not say that. He says, “Put to death your members which are upon the earth.” Which members? Fornication, uncleanness, passion, and evil desire. By the way, do you know what “uncleanness” means here? Masturbation, which in our time is loudly proclaimed to be harmless and something our young people may engage in. How dreadful and appalling! This is what people teach and say today. In the language of the Gospel, this is called uncleanness. The ancient Greeks used a particular verb for it; I will give it to you in the infinitive:
“Dephesthai, dephesthai”—that was the verb. Therefore, the Apostle says, “Put to death your members which are upon the earth.” These are the earthly members in which sin takes its seat, and he then lists that sin in detail: fornication, evil desire, passion, uncleanness, and so forth. This putting to death is nothing other than precisely what we have already received in our Baptism. That is, I have been baptized into the likeness of Christ’s death. You cannot be called a spiritual person unless the old self has been put to death. The putting to death of the old self comes from Christ’s own death upon the Cross.
Indeed. I have a note here, because I cannot keep all the passages before me. In Romans, chapter 11, verse 17, the Apostle Paul says: “You, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them and became a fellow-partaker of the root and richness of the olive tree.” You, he says, were a wild olive tree. Who is this “you”? You, the idolater, the Gentile. But now you have been grafted in and have become a partaker of the root and richness of the olive tree. And this true olive tree is Christ. Do you see, then, that we have become united with Him in His very life and growth? The various Greek expressions all point to something implanted, sharing the same nature, naturally joined and grown together. They all reveal how deeply we have been united with Him. Moreover, when I am baptized, do I not become a member of the body of Christ? Tell me: what relationship do my fingers have to my body? They too are part of the body. The Apostle Paul says to the Corinthians, “Do you not know—”
“—that we are members of Christ?” I am among the members of Christ; we are members of Christ. Have we ever truly grasped this? Then he speaks about union with a prostitute and says: “Shall I then take the members of Christ”—after I have entered into Christ’s sufferings and into His death—“and make them members of a prostitute? Certainly not!” Now we can understand what this means. We are also reminded of these truths during Baptism. I copied the following from the Baptismal service. It is said in the Litany of Peace—but how little attention we pay to these words! How little attention!
When we attend a Baptism, or are invited to one, we take care of everything: dresses, suits, banquets, favors—everything! We watch how the little child moves, whether the child cries or resists, and every other detail. We are all smiles at the Baptism, but we pay no attention to the words being spoken. What, then, does the service say? “That he may become”—that is, let us pray that the person being baptized may become—“united with and a partaker of the death and Resurrection of Christ our God.”
“Let us pray to the Lord.” It could not be clearer. Once I celebrated a service of Holy Matrimony, and I was accustomed to offering a few words. On that occasion I spoke about matters that included death and similar things, and I kept looking around because, as you know, if you speak about death while marrying a couple—
—you may get beaten up! I kept looking this way and that in case someone came at me and gave me a beating. But why should that be? If we maintain a realistic view of life, why should it be so? On one occasion, then, in a short address to a newly married couple at Saint Athanasios in the Children’s Village of Larissa, I said:
“Buy a copy of the service of Holy Matrimony.” It is a small booklet, published separately. Priests use it when they celebrate weddings instead of using the full Euchologion, which contains many other services. Buy it, and once a year, you newlyweds, study it so that you may see what is required for you to live well and rightly within Holy Matrimony. If I asked how many of you own the service of Holy Matrimony—and, moreover, study it once a year—and then said, “Raise your hand,” I am afraid I would not see a single hand raised.
We could say the same thing, my dear ones, about Baptism. Have we not all been baptized? Once a year, then, let us study the service of the Mystery of Baptism. How did I find this passage that says, “That he may become united with and a partaker of the death”? Do you see what this means? If we study, we will discover all these truths and bring them into our lives. So, my dear ones, I told you that we must put to death our members which are upon the earth. Yes, this is that putting to death. But does the Apostle Paul not say, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me”? Does the Apostle Paul not say—
Does he not say that he died to the world, and the world to him? The world, he says, was crucified to Paul, and Paul was crucified to the world. He has nothing to do with the world. Do you know what this means? Everything that makes up what is called Paul’s mysticism is nothing other than this third element: that we die and live in Christ Jesus. This is the third element we speak of in Baptism. What was the first? Forgiveness of sins. What came next? Adoption: we become children of God. And then what? This great thing we have been speaking about: entering into Christ’s sufferings. Would you like something more?
Do you know what is meant by the life of nepsis? Here is a definition: “Nepsis, as it is and is called, is the guarding of the nous and purity of heart.” “The guarding of the nous and purity of heart.” This is written in the first volume of the Philokalia. What is nepsis, or watchfulness? The word comes from the Greek verb nepho. It means guarding the nous, the spiritual intellect: I will not allow logismoi, intrusive thoughts, to wander here and there. And it means purity of heart. This is called nepsis. But where does this nepsis come from? When, for example, ascetics practise nepsis, what does that mean? It means that they have understood the third element of Baptism.
They have entered into the likeness of Christ’s death. They die to the world. But in our own lives, the world is very much alive. People say, “What will the world say?” Do you hear that? “If we act like this, the world will mock us.” Paul, however, said that he had died to the world. What the world says should not concern us. And so, little by little, a worldly way of life entered the life of the Christian. This happened because we forgot the third element, and today we have all forgotten it. Because this third element was forgotten, we became worldly Christians. But can a worldly Christian enter the Kingdom of God? I will repeat what I told you at the beginning. Without the forgiveness of sins, you cannot enter the Kingdom of God. Without adoption—even if there is forgiveness, but no adoption—you cannot enter the Kingdom of God. And if both are present, but the third is not—if you do not become grafted into the likeness of Christ’s death—
if this does not become a reality in your life, you will not enter. This third element is what we must offer to Christ. As I told you before, you offer your prosphora and your wine, and you receive the Body and Blood of Christ. In the same way, you must offer this third element, because, as I told you, the other two are received somewhat passively.
Whether I want it or not, once I am baptized, I become a child of God. Whether I want it or not, my sins are forgiven; I receive this passively. But the third element is not passive. I must put my old life to death, and when I have done so, then I am saved. If you will allow me to put it this way, this is the price I must offer in order to receive salvation. I would be very happy if we understood this point—first with our reason, and then in practice. You see, I keep getting the hiccups: I say things and then say them again. That is characteristic of me. How many times have I made these points? Three or four times, so that they may become firmly established. It is a teacher’s failing.
Someone may say, “A teacher, whether a man or a woman, says the same things again and again.” Why? So that they may become firmly established in the ears and in the minds of the students. We say them and say them again. I would be happier still if, one day, we understood that these things must enter our daily life and be put into practice. They are a kind of price we offer in order to receive our salvation. And do not forget that we are baptized not only into Christ’s sufferings and death, but also into His Resurrection. When Christ says that we must be put to death... Listen to how the Apostle Paul expresses this: “Your life is hidden with Christ.” Look at his mysticism; look at the meaning contained in every word. What does this word “hidden”
mean? Something has been concealed. What has been concealed? Our life. Where? In the life of Christ, who suffered and rose again. Our life, then, is hidden there, within the Body of Christ, within the life of Christ’s Body. “When Christ, who is our life, appears,” he says, then our life will also be revealed, because our life will be revealed when Christ is revealed. Then, he says, we shall be with Him in His Kingdom. Where, then, is our life hidden? In Christ. And when will it be hidden in Christ? When I become grafted into Christ’s sufferings and death. I told you last time—and there is no harm in saying it again—that Christ suffered in this present world. He hungered, thirsted, and grew weary. It was not only the Cross. The Cross was the summit of His suffering. So when we too, my dear friends, sometimes go hungry for some reason, or become thirsty or weary, let us not grumble. Since we have been baptized, we too will experience these sufferings along the course of our life, these everyday sufferings, because we take up our daily cross, as the Lord says—He says this in one of the Gospels—“the daily cross.” Let us not grumble, but accept it with joy. Today we are free; tomorrow we may not be.
Today we can go wherever we wish; tomorrow we may not be able to. We may be persecuted. The Church may be persecuted. We know that this can happen. We shall not grumble, desert, or betray the faith. Instead, we shall endure persecution and hardship. Read in the Epistle to the Hebrews what the Apostle Paul says the Saints endured: they were afflicted, mistreated, and tormented—people of whom, he says, the world was not worthy. All these are Christ’s sufferings before Christ. Listen carefully to what I said: Christ’s sufferings before Christ. What does this mean? I will show you at once. In the Epistle to the Hebrews, where he recounts the sufferings of the Saints who lived before Christ,
he says of Moses that he chose to share in suffering. The Greek word helomenos is a participle meaning “having chosen,” from the verb meaning “I choose” or “I prefer.” He chose to share in suffering. If I sometimes make a grammatical mistake, never mind; it has been fifty years since I left these things behind—I mean, since I left school—so I make mistakes. Some things I understand and others I do not, but never mind; please forgive me. Moses, he says, chose to share in suffering with the people of God,
bearing the reproach of Christ, rather than being called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter and enjoying the treasures of Egypt. “The reproach of Christ”—that is the important point. He chose, it says, to bear the reproach of Christ. Which reproach? Moses lived fifteen hundred years before Christ. The Apostle Paul did not make a mistake by writing this. For just as the precious Cross of Christ was already at work before the historical Cross was raised on Golgotha, so the precious Cross and its
divine uncreated energy were at work in the Old Testament. Therefore, the Saints of the Old Testament lived the Mystery of the Cross before Christ. Moses had, of course, foretold the One who was to come, the other Prophet, of whom he said, “Whoever does not listen to Him will perish.” That Prophet is the Messiah, and Moses was already living His reproach. The divine uncreated energy of the precious Cross, then, and of the incarnate Word of God—even before His Incarnation—was already present. The faithful person, the Saint, had to live by it; indeed, the whole people had to live by it, not
only a few—though unfortunately only a few actually lived the Mystery of the precious Cross and of Jesus Christ. What did I say? “Of Jesus Christ”? That was a mistake. I mean the reproach of Jesus Christ. Do you see this, please? When the Hebrews suffered hardship, they were, in a certain way, being initiated into the Mystery of the Cross and Christ’s Passion. Do you see this? No one enters the Kingdom of God unless he has been initiated into the Mystery of Christ’s death and Passion. Please, let us understand this. Please, let us understand it. This is why, when we are baptized, our Baptism is utterly opposed to the spirit of the world, and our life must also be opposed to that spirit. We want to become rich, but Baptism points in the opposite direction. We desire many things in this present world, but they are worldly, while we must live against the spirit of the world. Yet we live so worldly a life. So I ask you: let us
pay close attention to this point. It is of fundamental importance—of fundamental importance. There is nothing more important for our salvation. And Saint Cyril concludes the
Second Mystagogical Catechesis, which, as I told you, concerns Baptism—for the next catechesis concerns Chrismation, and there you will find some very beautiful teachings—in the following way. This is the eighth paragraph: “Having been sufficiently instructed in these things, I ask you to hold them fast in your memory.” You have been sufficiently instructed. I have told you many things—many things. I fear that I may have told you more than Saint Cyril himself did, because Saint Cyril delivered each catechesis in a single day. The five Mystagogical Catecheses were given during Bright Week—on the first... forgive me, beginning on Bright Monday, the second day of Bright Week. He performed the Baptism on Pascha, and this catechesis was given on Bright Tuesday.
By Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of Bright Week, all five catecheses had been completed. We, however, have a whole year in which to give these catecheses. Do you know why? Because the catechumens had already received preliminary instruction. So when Saint Cyril spoke briefly, it was enough. They were able to understand many things. But we have no such preparation, and so we must explain everything in detail. Why? Because we do not study. We must study. “Sufficiently,” he says: I have told you enough, enough. “I ask you to hold them fast in your memory.” Keep these things in your memory. And I too, as I explain the text of the Holy Father, ask the same of you: let us also keep these things in our memory. And I repeat, please,
“I too, though unworthy, say this to you.” Saint Cyril says this so that he, though unworthy, may be able to say to them: “I praise you because you always remember me and hold fast the traditions just as I delivered them to you.” He wishes to say what the Apostle Paul says to the Corinthians in the eleventh chapter of First Corinthians. “I praise you because you always remember me,” Paul says to the Corinthians, and Saint Cyril says the same to those receiving catechesis. “And you hold fast the traditions just as I delivered them to you.” You keep what I taught and handed down to you.
He did not merely say, “You have them,” but, “You hold them fast.” You keep them securely, just as I taught you. And indeed, we must hold fast to all these things both in our memory and in our actions. Do not forget that repetition is the mother of every branch of learning, including theology. What is repetition? It means saying these things again and again. That is why I told you earlier: obtain a small booklet and study the service of Baptism, the service of Holy Matrimony, and the other services, or study Holy Scripture. Repetition, repetition. This is what firmly establishes memory and knowledge within us.
“God, who has presented us as living from the dead, is able to grant you to walk in newness of life.” God has the power to help you walk in newness of life—that is, to live a new life. Christians today do not carry the fragrance of newness; there is no sense that they are new people. We are not new. We have grown old, and we treat Baptism as a mere custom: something one simply does. “To Him be glory and dominion, now and unto the ages. Amen,” for power and glory belong to Him eternally. And I too would say to you, my dear friends: hold fast to what we have told you. Of course, you also make an effort.
This effort of yours—coming here at such an hour—is itself an offering and a sharing in suffering. You could be sleeping at home now, reclining in a chair and reading your newspaper. I am only giving an example. Instead, you are here to hear the Word of God. This, then, is a beginning of suffering. Let us strive to enter into Christ’s sufferings, and then we shall understand what the Christian life truly is. The Christian life has a cost. You cannot become a Christian without paying a price. And because people do not want to pay that price, they do not become good Christians. The Christian life has a cost, and whoever is ready to pay it, let him begin. Thank you for listening.

Λέγει τώρα ο Απόστολος, ο Άγιος Κύριλος: «Ίσως γαρ προς τινας ούτω διατεθέντας, ως αφέσεως αμαρτημάτων και υιοθεσίας προξενητικόν το βάπτισμα, ουκέτι δε και των αληθινών του Χριστού παθημάτων εν μιμήσει έχον την κοινωνίαν». Δηλαδή, όταν αυτά τα έγραφε ο Απόστολος Παύλος, ίσως, λέει, να είχε ως αναγνώστας κάποιους, μερικούς, οι οποίοι πίστευαν ότι το βάπτισμα είναι μόνον για την άφεση των αμαρτιών και δια την υιοθεσία και όχι δια την μετοχή στα παθήματα του Χριστού. Αυτό το τελευταίο, ότι γινόμεθα μέτοχοι των παθημάτων του Χριστού, αλήθεια το γνωρίζετε;
Είναι στις εννέα ωδές. Πώς λέγεται; «Κήπος Χαρίτων». Ξέρετε, έχει ολόκληρο, σελίδες έχει για το θέμα «έλεος». Για να σου δώσει ο Θεός το έλεος, πρέπει να προσφέρεις κι εσύ. Μα τότε τι έλεος είναι αυτό, θα πείτε; Ή τι χάρις είναι αυτή; Έτσι το θέλει ο Θεός. Εάν δεν προσφέρεις, δεν θα πάρεις. Και το δυστύχημα είναι ότι στο έλεος του Θεού, που το ζητάμε, δεν προσφέρουμε τίποτα. Τα ακούσατε; Λέμε στην προσευχή μας: «Δώσ’ μου, Κύριε, το έλεός Σου». Τι έκανες; Έκανες μετάνοια; Έκανες θερμή προσευχή; Έκανες νηστεία;
Είπα προηγουμένως ότι η απουσία αυτού του τρίτου στοιχείου, ότι γινόμεθα σύμφυτοι των παθημάτων του Χριστού, επειδή δεν το τονίσαμε —και φαίνεται από τα χρόνια ακόμη του Αποστόλου αυτό δεν είχε τονιστεί— δηλαδή, δεν είχε τονιστεί. Δεν το λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλος; Ίσως γι’ αυτό ο Απόστολος το γράφει, γιατί μερικοί, κάποιοι, έτσι να νόμιζαν, ότι έχουμε μόνο υιοθεσία και άφεση αμαρτιών. Αυτό έχει γίνει η αιτία, σας είπα προηγουμένως, να εκκοσμικευθούμε και να μην μπορούμε να κατανοήσουμε το Ευαγγέλιο. Ακούσατε το πώς; Πώς θα πει γίνομαι σύμφυτος των παθημάτων και του θανάτου του Χριστού;
για τον κόσμο πέθανε και γι’ αυτόν ο κόσμος; Ότι σταυρώθηκε, λέει, ο κόσμος για τον Παύλο, ο Παύλος σταυρώθηκε για τον κόσμο. Δεν έχει καμία σχέση με τον κόσμο. Αυτό ξέρετε τι θα πει; Όλα αυτά που αποτελούν τον λεγόμενο μυστικισμό του Παύλου δεν είναι τίποτε άλλο παρά αυτός ο τρίτος όρος: να πεθάνουμε και να ζήσουμε εν Χριστώ Ιησού. Αυτός ο τρίτος όρος που λέμε στο βάπτισμα. Τι είπαμε; Άφεση αμαρτιών. Τι μετά είπαμε; Υιοθεσία. Γινόμαστε παιδιά του Θεού. Τι μετά; Αυτό που λέμε το σπουδαίο: να μπούμε στα παθήματα του Χριστού. Θέλετε ακόμη κάτι άλλο;
