Summary
Saint Cyril’s Second Mystagogical Catechesis presents exorcised oil as a sacramental sign of communion with Christ’s spiritual riches and protection from demonic powers. At the font, the candidate confesses the Trinitarian faith and undergoes three immersions and emergences, signifying Christ’s three-day burial and Resurrection. Christian baptism is therefore an imitation in outward form but a true participation in Christ that grants authentic rebirth, communion, and salvation.

My dear friends, we are studying the book of catechetical lectures by Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. Last Monday we discussed his Second Mystagogical Catechesis, which concerns Baptism. Both the First and the Second Mystagogical Catecheses concern Baptism. We did not finish the Second, so we shall continue. Those of you who have the book will find us at the third paragraph, paragraph C. Since we advanced only a little, let me also mention that beside the text in the book there are the numbers 5, 10, and 15. These mark the lines, so that we can give the exact location.
Whether we put it in the notes or mention it aloud, this helps everyone find precisely the passage we mean. So we are at line eleven—line eleven: “The exorcised oil, therefore, is a symbol of communion in the richness of Christ, and it drives away every trace of the opposing power.” I should tell you here that Saint Cyril will speak more fully about the anointing with exorcised oil in the next catechesis. Here, however...
he mentions it only in passing. It does no harm if we say a few things now about the exorcised oil and speak of it again in the next catechesis. What is this exorcised oil? It is oil over which a prayer has been read in the name of the Holy Trinity, and it drives away demons. To bring this into our own present-day experience, it is the familiar oil that the sponsor receives in cupped hands: the priest pours it into the sponsor’s two palms after first reading a prayer.
This is done, of course, in the name of the Holy Trinity. The sponsor then takes this oil and anoints the entire body of the person about to be baptized. This is what we call exorcised oil. Saint Cyril says here that this exorcised oil—and “to adjure” or “to exorcise,” as in the prayers of exorcism over the catechumens, means the same thing—signifies driving away the demons.
So this oil is a symbol of the demons’ expulsion. That is why it is called exorcised oil. But pay attention: that is not all. Earlier Saint Cyril told us that Christ is the true olive tree—not the wild olive tree, but the cultivated olive tree. The Apostle Paul speaks of the cultivated and the wild olive trees in his Epistle to the Romans. And last time I told you that Christ is called the true vine: “I am the true vine,” He says, and we are the branches—you are the branches, that is, the shoots of the vine—
because the first vine, the people of Israel, failed to fulfill its purpose. The cultivated olive tree also failed in this sense, because Israel did not believe in Christ. Therefore, Christ is now the true olive tree. But the olive tree bears olives, and from the olives comes oil. This oil, then, is a symbol of what comes forth from the good olive tree, the true olive tree, who is Jesus Christ. Pay attention to this word: symbol. I shall say it once again—symbol—and anticipate what follows.
Saint Cyril will say this repeatedly: although these things are symbols, nevertheless—and please take careful note—the salvation is real. These things are symbols, but the salvation is real. Why is the salvation real? Because they are symbols of realities that were truly accomplished in the person of Jesus Christ. Forgive the awkward repetition in saying “realities that were realized.” In a moment we shall see that we are led to death. What death? The death represented in the baptismal font. That is a symbol.
Christ was truly led to death. Saint Cyril will tell us this a little further on, but I am saying it beforehand so that it may be firmly impressed upon you. These are symbols, yet these symbols lead to real salvation. If, for some reason, we do not make use of the symbols, then salvation comes to nothing for us. Let me give you an example. I do not think a better one could be found than this. Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army, once heard about the prophet from a young servant girl. The Syrians used to make frequent raids and take captives, and this young girl had been taken captive. When the commander became a leper, she said, “Master, why do you not go to my homeland and find a mighty and distinguished prophet named Elisha? He will heal you.” The man did not believe her. It is noteworthy that Christ spoke of Naaman to the people of His own time. He referred to him, as He also referred to the widow of Zarephath in Sidon. Do not forget that. So Naaman went, taking many gifts, and the prophet told him:
“Wash seven times in the Jordan River, and you will be healed.” Naaman took offense. He said to his military escort, “Do we not have better rivers in Syria than this little stream, the Jordan here in Israel?” He became angry and set out for home. But his attendants said to him, “Commander, he did not ask you to do anything impossible, difficult, or costly. Go—what do you have to lose? Go and immerse yourself seven times, washing seven times in succession. You never know what may happen.”
He went and washed seven times. Immediately after the seventh washing, the leprosy disappeared. I ask you: did the water of the Jordan possess some natural power to cure leprosy? Certainly not. Then what healed him? First of all, what he did seven times in the Jordan River—not in some other river—was a symbol. A symbol of what? Of the Baptism that was to come, and also of the fact that Christ would be baptized in the Jordan. Therefore...
Naaman the Syrian performed a symbol. Yet although he made use of a symbol, his cleansing, his healing, was real. Do you understand? It was real. In the same way, in Baptism we make use of these symbols—the water and the immersion, as we shall see—but the salvation is real. Whoever refused the symbols would also lose salvation. I do not think a better or more fitting example could be given than this one from the Old Testament.
Let us continue at once. Saint Cyril says, “The exorcised oil, therefore, is a symbol of communion in the richness of Christ.” Everything I have said concerned the word “symbol.” That is the point I wished to emphasize. He says that it is a symbol of communion in the richness of Christ. The Greek word here is piotēs, spelled with an iota. It does not mean “quality,” which in Greek is spelled differently; it means richness, abundance. In the Akathist Salutations to the Most Holy Theotokos, we say, “Rejoice, rich and curdled mountain.”
We call the Most Holy Theotokos a rich mountain. Rich in what? In everything a mountain may possess—forests, waters, and all its other abundance. So what do we call the Most Holy Theotokos? A rich mountain: abundant, shady, cool, and full of riches. Here, then, the oil is a symbol of communion with Christ, a communion in riches—spiritual riches, of course. This is the first point: it is communion in spiritual riches. I become a partaker of the riches of Jesus Christ. Now for the second point.
“Driving away every trace of the opposing power.” It is a means of putting to flight, a protection that wards something off. The Greek word alexitērion comes from the root alex-, as in Alexander and in other words meaning something that repels or wards off. Those of you who read the Office before Holy Communion—the canon—will encounter the word alexitērion there. So that you will not wonder what it means, I am telling you: it means something that drives away. “A means of putting to flight” has the same meaning. It drives away every trace of the opposing power.
What is this opposing power? Every demonic power. So this is the second point: wherever demons may be lurking, the oil drives them away. This symbol truly drives them away. Now we can understand why the whole body is anointed with this oil. It means that the entire body is covered, without leaving even the smallest corner untouched, lest there be some place where demons might be lurking. Do not find this strange. A contemporary saint once said, “There are demon-possessed people in our time because Baptism is not performed correctly.” Did you hear that? I remember an occasion—although it does not concern Baptism. In my entire life I have performed the full Baptism of only one child, just one. It happened in an exceptional case, by economia, as I have often said. I baptized only one child, and perhaps I performed two or three services of Holy Matrimony by myself. Perhaps even two or three is an overstatement; I do not know. Once, when I was a newly ordained priest at Saint Stylianos, the sponsor arrived and said to me, “Listen, Father!
Do not say all of it”—meaning the service, the Mystery of Holy Matrimony. “Do not say everything. Make it quick, because the newlyweds are in a hurry to leave on their journey.” I replied, “What are you saying? Of course I shall say it all!” Do you hear the carelessness? “Do not say everything; they are in a hurry”—as though they were going to be married many times in their lives. Unfortunately, the same thing happens, perhaps—and I say “perhaps” only to soften the statement—with Baptism as well. Saint Cyril continues: “For just as the breathings of the saints and the invocation of the name of God, like a most vehement flame, burn and drive away demons, so this exorcised oil, through the invocation of God and prayer, receives such power that it not only burns away and cleanses the traces of sins, but also drives away the invisible powers of the evil one.” In other words, he says that the breathings of the saints, together with the invocation of the name of God, drive away demons. I have said “just as”; let me stop here, with the sentence unfinished. What breathings does he mean? Remember!
You know that during the prayers for the catechumens, which are performed at the entrance of the church, the priest breathes three times upon the infant in the form of the Cross. What is this? A symbol. To our eyes it is a symbol, but in reality it is a flame that burns the demons. You have heard the confessions of demon-possessed people when they cry out, “I am burning! I am burning!”
Have you heard this? I have been told that the demons call Saint Nektarios of Aegina “the Scorcher,” because he scorches and burns them. And yet the priest may simply be reading a prayer of exorcism, or we may breathe upon the infant—and the demons are burned. Do you want proof? The demons themselves confess that they are burning. You see, then, that what appears as a symbol to our eyes becomes an actual reality against the demons. Do you see this? And so, as Saint Cyril says, the breathings and the rest...
drive away the demons. In the same way, this exorcised oil, through the invocation of the name of God and through the prayer—the prayer that we read—receives such power that it burns away the traces of sins and drives out the invisible powers of Satan. What I want you to retain is this: beneath the symbols are realities, and above all the chief reality of salvation. I shall say it again further on, a third time, and then again; Saint Cyril himself says it twice, making four times in all. A brief comment has just come to mind. Is it to our child’s benefit to leave the child unbaptized until the age of one, two, three, or five? My dear friends, when a child is born, it is fitting to allow time for the child to recover and for the mother to complete her forty days, and so forth. Then, after the forty days, the Baptism should take place—unless there is a reason, of course, to baptize before then. If a child is near death, we baptize the child sooner. If possible, we baptize the child at the very hour of birth. But when there is no such urgent reason, then after the forty days...
after the mother’s churching, that is, we should begin arranging the Baptism. For the child will receive not only the benefit of Baptism—all that we have just been discussing—but also the blessing of receiving the Lord’s Body and Christ’s Blood in Holy Communion. Do not tell me, “You know, we are waiting for the godparent to come from America.” Do not tell me that. Or people say, “The godfather is a general in Athens, and we are waiting for him. He is very busy.” You are waiting? Why are you waiting? Is it truly necessary for the godmother to come from America or for the godfather to be a general from Athens? What sort of thing is this? Find someone to baptize your child. And since we have spoken about this, let me offer you a word of advice.
If you wish, take this advice to heart. It is not my own. I heard it being discussed in a gathering when I was a very small child. My mother was there, along with a certain family who followed this practice. They had four sons, and this is what they did. Listen: choose very close relatives as godparents for your children—your brother or your sister, for example. Yes! Why? So that, under the pretext of being a godparent, a godfather or godmother will not come into your home at any hour of the day or night, with all the consequences that can follow.
Things happen—and you know what kinds of things I mean. So, to remove every such suspicion, godparents need discernment. They should say, “Yes, I may be the godparent, but that does not mean I may visit my godson’s or goddaughter’s home at any hour.” No, we must have discernment. Since people unfortunately lack discernment, please choose very, very close relatives to baptize your children. And now we continue. Paragraph four: “After this, you were led by the hand to the holy font of divine Baptism.”
“Just as Christ was taken from the Cross to the tomb prepared before Him.” This is beautiful, very beautiful. After these things, he says, you were led by the hand and brought to the font to be baptized. Let me make a brief comment. The baptismal fonts of ancient times were not like the familiar fonts of today. As I believe I told you last time, they were set into the floor of the baptistery, the place where Baptism was performed. The font was a cross-shaped basin.
It contained water, and there were two or three steps descending into it from one side and ascending on the other. Those who were to be baptized went down into it, while the priest performed the Baptism from above. Thus, the word “font” did not mean the familiar bronze vessel we use today. Remember the pools to which the sick went to be healed in the time of Christ: Scripture speaks of “the pool of Siloam.” So a font meant a pool, not the familiar ecclesiastical vessel. It is useful for us to know all this. You were led by the hand, he says, to the font, just as Christ was taken from the Cross
“to the tomb prepared before Him.” Here we come to a profound and very important Mystery—perhaps not the most important of all, but certainly of immense importance. Pay attention. When Christ was crucified, Joseph and Nicodemus took Christ down from the Cross, wrapped Him in a burial shroud, and laid Him in the tomb.
Thus, he says, whatever happened to Christ is now happening to you as well.
That is,
you pass from the Cross—the Cross being the sign of death—to the tomb, where... A tomb is a grave. What exactly does this mean, my beloved? Or perhaps I should not say it yet, because he explains it a little further on, and I do not want to anticipate him: we enter into the life of Christ’s death. Forgive me—we enter into Christ’s death.
We shall also enter into the life of Christ. To “enter into Christ’s death” means to be baptized into Christ’s death. The font, then, is a tomb. I have died, and I am buried. Where? Within the baptismal font.
“Each person was asked whether he believed in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Each of you was asked whether you believed in the Holy Trinity. You see, Baptism is performed in the name of the Holy Trinity. Can I baptize in some other name, in the name of some other person? Yes, but it would not be Christian Baptism and, of course, it would not be a Baptism that brings salvation. “And you confessed the saving confession.” You confessed, he says, the confession that saves: “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty; and in one Lord Jesus Christ; and in the Holy Spirit; and in one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.”
“You descended three times into the water and rose from it again, thereby symbolically signifying Christ’s three-day burial.” This is the threefold immersion and emergence. What does it mean? It signifies Christ’s three-day burial. Thank you. I passed quickly over that brief passage from the sacred text so as not to delay. You understand: three days and three nights, the immersions and emergences, and so forth. “And at that very moment”—pay close attention here—“you were dying and being born, and that saving water became for you both a tomb and a mother.” This is the crucial point. When he says “at that very moment,” he means that in the very same thing—the font—the font simultaneously became both tomb and womb: tomb and womb. There you die,
and there you are born. Here he says “mother,” or we may say “womb”; the meaning is the same. The font gives you new birth. Remember Nicodemus, the member of the council, who asked the Lord how a person could be born. The Lord said that no one can be born—that is, born anew—except through water and the Spirit. Nicodemus did not understand, even though he was a teacher of the Law. He asked, “Must a man enter his mother’s womb again?”
How naïve, how naïve. And the Lord said, “No, of course not. How could that be possible?” Then how does it happen? A person enters another womb: the font, which is Baptism. And He says, “through water and the Spirit.” These are the two elements: water and the Holy Spirit. Now, why water? I believe I once told you that this contains very profound theology. At one point I considered gathering whatever material I could find and presenting a talk to you on the theology of water. It is a vast subject. For now, I shall only mention very briefly the words of the Apostle Peter: the heavens and the earth were made “out of water and through water.” This is a strange expression.
Yet it is not strange. To begin with, if we turn to the philosophical beliefs concerning the creation of the world, we shall find many similar ideas. What does the Apostle Peter mean by “out of water and through water”? The heavens and the earth—the heavens, indeed, in the plural—were made out of water and through water. In former times, this might have remained incomprehensible, especially if it had to be considered only philosophically, as an element of cosmology or cosmogony. The philosophers proposed many things. Today, however, my beloved, we can say something more. You know that creation was once thought to consist of four elements—but I am straying too far.
Today we know that water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen—specifically, two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. We also know that hydrogen is a primary element of creation. By building upon it, we obtain other elements. If we add a second proton, a third, or a fiftieth, we produce another element. Thus, all the elements that exist, including the natural elements in Mendeleev’s table, if I remember correctly—some pronounce his name differently—
as well as the artificial elements, are essentially nothing other than additions to the nucleus of hydrogen. When we speak of the heavens, then, what are the heavens? They are the visible heavens, the universe. And what is the universe? It is made of the same materials as the earth; it is not something entirely different. In one place an element may be absent, while in another there may be more of it than on earth. Nevertheless, the materials are the same. If we wished to express in modern terms the truth that God made the heavens, and that the heavens and the earth consist...
They were created. They were created “out of water and through water.” We might express this by saying that the universe and the earth were made from hydrogen.
Magnificent! If you understand it, it is magnificent. And as for the earth’s formation, it is well known that water shaped, continues to shape, and will continue to shape the surface of the earth. That too is well known. So you see how profound and true the expression “out of water and through water” is, though it consists of only a few words. Now God chooses to use this primary element called water in those things we call the Mysteries, in order to renew fallen and decaying
humanity, in a world where humanity’s own corruption brought about the corruption of the universe as well. Saint Irenaeus expresses this beautifully when he says that we dwell in a world grown old. And what are we awaiting? The Apostle Peter tells us, the Apostle Paul tells us, and Isaiah tells us: a new world. The Apocalypse says, “I saw a new heaven and a new earth.” But do you know what is astonishing? On the new earth there is no water. Do not ask me why, or we shall never finish; we would be led down another path by discussing these things. Why is there no water? John the Evangelist says, “I looked and saw that
the sea was no more.” It had passed away—the sea, which is the principal source of water. From the sea come the clouds, and so forth. Why, then, is there no water there? He sees a river flowing from the throne of God, with clear, cool, crystal-like water. But that is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. It is another world, another state of being. Water is no longer needed there. Here and now, however, water is necessary. And I believe that God requires water for the Mystery of humanity’s renewal for the following reason.
Among the many reasons is this one: the God who desires the renewal of man is the very same God who created the world. This is therefore a blow against dualism. There are not two gods—a god of matter, who is evil, and a God of the spirit. God chooses water in order to show that He Himself is also the Creator of matter. There is one God. If you deny this, then without realizing it, you are a dualist: you believe in two first principles.
For this is how a person is saved, and it is a true confession of the God in whom we believe: by using what the Lord Himself appointed. How does renewal take place? “Through water and the Spirit.” And so, my dear friends, we see here that the baptismal font becomes a tomb at the same time. There you die beneath the water, as though you were beneath the earth, buried in the ground, and at that very moment you are born anew. “And what Solomon said concerning another matter may fittingly be applied to us.”
For there he said, “A time to be born, and a time to die.” Ecclesiastes 3:2 does indeed say this. “But with us it is the reverse.” There it says that there is a time for a person to be born and a time to die, because naturally one is born first and dies afterward. But for you, Saint Cyril says to those who have been baptized, it is the other way around. How so? “A time to die, and a time to be born.” First you die, and then you are born. This is Baptism. “And one moment brought about both of these.”
“Your birth ran together with your death.” One moment, one instant, brings about both. “It brought about both of these”—that is, it accomplishes both things at the same moment, at the same time. They “ran together.” Something runs together when it runs alongside something else. And what runs together here? Death and birth. Both run together: death alongside birth. You die and you are born. It is magnificent, if only we can understand what Baptism truly is. Paragraph five.
“What a strange and wondrous thing! We did not truly die, nor were we truly buried; neither were we truly crucified and raised. The imitation was in an image, but the salvation was in truth.” What is so wondrous about it? We did not literally die, nor were we literally buried. Neither were we literally crucified, nor did we literally rise from the dead. What, then, took place? An imitation—a representation.
The imitation took place in an image, in a symbolic form. I died and was born; I was crucified and rose again. That is the symbol. But Saint Cyril says, “The salvation, however, was in truth.” This is what I told you earlier, at the beginning of our talk: the salvation is real. Did you hear that? The salvation is real. “Christ was truly crucified, truly buried, and truly rose again.” Christ alone was actually crucified, actually buried, and actually rose from the dead.
“He granted all these things to us, so that by imitating His sufferings and thereby sharing in them, we might truly gain salvation.” All these things happened to Christ so that we might imitate them and, through that imitation—this great subject I mentioned earlier—become participants in His sufferings. Yet the salvation we receive and gain is true salvation. “That we might truly gain salvation”—real salvation. We are therefore imitators of Christ’s sufferings. Do you know what that means?
I will anticipate what comes next, though he will explain it very plainly a little later. It means that I become a participant in everything the Lord suffered. What did He suffer? Everything that He underwent. Above all, the Cross. What did the Lord endure? He hungered, thirsted, and grew weary. Let me give just one example. Remember how He was hungry and looked for figs. He was thirsty and said to the Samaritan woman, “Give Me water to drink.” John the Evangelist notes that He was “wearied from the journey”—tired at midday, in the heat.
The Lord was also crucified. Forgive me—He also kept vigil and fasted. What constitutes the life of Christ? Let us read the four Gospels, and we shall see what constitutes His life. Its summit is the Cross. Now, when it says here—as the Apostle Paul also says, and as we shall see a little later, though perhaps we will not have time tonight—that we become participants in the sufferings of Christ, do you know what that means? It means that the Gospel must enter into my life. But when the Gospel enters my life, it enters as a cross, as death, as suffering.
Now you can better understand what Christ said: “Whoever wishes to follow Me must take up his cross.” We can understand this a little better now. It is what I have repeatedly told you: the Gospel is cruciform; it bears the form of the Cross. If someone comes and makes the Gospel easy, easy, easy—turning Christianity into a comfortable way of life—then, take care, as I also told you in last night’s talk: by making Christianity comfortable, he effectively abolishes the Cross and abolishes suffering. But by abolishing suffering, the Christian can no longer participate in Christ’s sufferings and therefore cannot participate in salvation. For this reason, a form of Christianity
from which the believer’s sharing in Christ’s afflictions has been removed is useless and comes to nothing. Worse still, it creates the illusion that we could be saved in this way. Whoever does this is called an enemy of the Cross of Christ. How many times have I told you? In the Epistle to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul speaks about the enemies of the Cross of Christ: “I often told you about them, and now I write to you weeping.” In what does their hostility consist? “Their god is their belly, and their glory is in their shame.” Did you hear that? “Their god is their belly” means
prosperity, comfortable living, and worldly happiness. Say whatever you wish, but this is why Christians today remain far from true salvation and the true Gospel. “And their glory,” he says, “is in their shame.” What could be a cause of shame? Forgive me for the example—please forgive me; I will say it repeatedly because I want to make the point vivid. Suppose I suddenly jumped onto this table, took off my trousers, and showed you my whole body naked. What would you say? “How shameful!” Yet suppose I felt no shame and considered what I had done glorious. Tomorrow the newspaper Eleftheria would write, “What an unprecedented spectacle!” “Their glory is in their shame.”
Their glory lies in the very things of which they ought to be ashamed: when two married people can speak together and tell one another that they have lovers outside their marriages; when a young man begins having sexual relationships before marriage—fornication and adultery; when he boasts that he has become a man because he got drunk for the first time; or when he uses drugs and boasts about it.
A man may be a burglar and boast of it, or an embezzler and boast of that. What are they boasting about? Things of which they ought to be ashamed. And now the Apostle Paul calls such people enemies of the Cross of Christ. Then there is Freud’s theory—the theory of Freud.
Oh, in recent years Freudianism has been repeated endlessly on the radio, like a familiar refrain. I can only imagine what is happening on television and elsewhere. It is presented not merely as a theory but in practice as well, because when shameful things are put on the screen, as you say, that is Freudianism in practice. These people are certainly enemies of the Cross of Christ. What, then, must we do? We must undertake ascesis, ascetic discipline. By living the Mystery of the Cross, the believer becomes a participant in the sufferings of Christ. Listen to how masterfully and theologically the Apostle Paul expresses this.
He says, in Colossians, if I remember correctly—I have quoted this passage to you many times, but I want you to learn it thoroughly, so that it may be imprinted upon your hearts—“In my flesh I fill up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the Church.” The Church—do you see? “I fill up in my turn what is lacking.” That is, I do so in Christ’s stead. To fill up means to complete what Christ did not remain on earth to suffer, because Christ suffered once for all. But His body—which body? The Church—continues to suffer and be crucified throughout the ages, until the end of the age.
Did you hear? The Church suffers and is crucified until history reaches its end. Do you understand? Thus Paul is the first to say, “Now I suffer in Christ’s stead, because His body on earth is the Church, and the Church suffers.” Is she not persecuted, as we see in the Apocalypse? The woman is persecuted by the devil, and she flees and takes refuge in the wilderness, and so forth. “Therefore,” he says, “in Christ’s stead I fill up what is lacking.” What is “lacking” is what Christ did not remain on earth to endure. Christ came and departed. Now the Christians must carry on the rest. What did we say? Thank you.
The Christians must carry on the rest, because they are the ones who will fill up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ.
That is why Christians are called to suffer within history. Do you wish to be a Christian? Unless you choose to understand things in this way, take care not to deceive yourself: you are not a Christian. Here you can understand the place of so-called social Christianity—a Christianity turned into politics, a Christianity turned into worldly culture so that we may eat with golden spoons.
Here you can see it clearly; it is transparent. The beginning of this participation in the sufferings of Christ throughout our life in history is found in the baptismal font. You see why I told you earlier how important it is for a person to become—and he will use this word a little later, though perhaps we will not reach it tonight—united with Christ like a graft joined to a living stock. It means being grafted into the body of Christ, so that the believer undergoes what Christ would undergo if He were here on earth. Yes, of course, Christ is in Heaven with His human body, which is the Church; and the Church is constituted as His body by eating His body and drinking His blood. I was telling you...
You know very well that Christ’s wounds in His hands, His feet, and His side—so to speak—were not healed. They remained as wounds. The Lord did not appear to His disciples as a sick man, staggering about and asking for help, needing to be admitted to a hospital and receive medical care from His disciples. No. The Lord was, we might say, healthy. The suffering of the Cross and death had left no signs of infirmity upon Him. And yet the holes remained in His hands and feet, and the wound in His side. The proof is that He said to Thomas, “Come, put your finger into the print of the nails.”
Into the holes pierced by the nails. Why, then, were these wounds not healed? There are basically two reasons. The first is that they are Christ’s badges of honor: “See how great My love for you was, that I gave My body—forgive me—My own body to be crucified for you. See how greatly I loved you.”
Secondly—let us say there are three reasons, though there are many. Another reason is that when Christ comes, “they will look upon Him whom they pierced.” Is that not what it says in the first chapter of the Apocalypse? What does this mean? They will see the One whom they pierced. He will therefore show them His pierced hands and His pierced side as proof of His identity. “Ah, so this is the One whom we crucified.” Yes, it is He. They are marks of identity, my dear friends. And a third point: He wishes to tell us, “If you want to be My disciples in this world, I remind you of the holes in My hands.” In other words, you too will be crucified. You will suffer hardship. When we pass through various afflictions—not troubles of our own imagining, but afflictions that have truly come upon us, trials of many kinds—
we bear our Cross with patient endurance. One of the Evangelists says that a man must take up his Cross daily. My husband, my wife, my children, my neighbor—man or woman: a Cross! A person may truly have to suffer. If he shows patient endurance, then he is taking up his Cross. Then he truly follows Christ and has entered into the sufferings of Christ.
Let me not go on to the sixth paragraph, because we have only one minute left before we must finish. But the sixth paragraph will emphasize precisely this. We shall see that we must become partakers of the sufferings of Christ. My dear friends, this is authentic Christianity, and this is the authentic Gospel. If others tell you something different, do not accept it. This is the true and authentic Gospel. We must be crucified together with Christ, my dear friends. May the Lord bless you.

εκεί γεννάσθε. Εδώ λέει «μήτηρ» ή «μήτρα», το ίδιο είναι. Σας αναγεννά η κολυμβήθρα. Θυμηθείτε τον Νικόδημο, τον βουλευτή, που ερώτησε τον Κύριο πώς, λέει, κανείς μπορεί να γεννηθεί. Ο Κύριος είπε: «Δεν μπορεί κανείς να γεννηθεί, να αναγεννηθεί δηλαδή, παρά δι’ ύδατος και Πνεύματος». Δεν το κατάλαβε ο άνθρωπος, παρότι ήταν νομοδιδάσκαλος. Δηλαδή, λέγει, πρέπει να ξαναμπεί κανείς εις την μήτρα της μάνας του;
«Πάντα ημίν ταύτα εχαρίσατο, ίνα μιμήσει των παθημάτων αυτού κοινωνήσαντες, αληθεία την σωτηρίαν κερδήσωμεν». Όλα αυτά έγιναν στον Χριστό, ώστε εμείς να τα μιμηθούμε και, μιμούμενοι —αυτό το μεγάλο θέμα που σας είπα προηγουμένως— να γίνουμε κοινωνοί των παθών Του. Αλλά η σωτηρία, το παραλαμβάνει, θα κερδίσουμε αληθινή σωτηρία. «Αληθεία», δοτική, «την σωτηρίαν κερδήσωμεν», την πραγματική σωτηρία. Ώστε, λοιπόν, μιμηταί των παθημάτων του Χριστού. Ξέρετε τι σημαίνει αυτό;
