Summary
Saint Cyril’s five Mystagogical Catecheses introduce the newly baptized to Baptism, Chrismation, the Eucharist, and the Divine Liturgy as the sacramental life of the Church. Removing the baptismal garment signifies casting off the old man and his sinful deeds, while the outward symbol conveys the real forgiveness of ancestral and personal sins. The baptized must not put on the old garment again through sin, but when they fall, God provides the repeatable baptism of repentance while sacramental Baptism itself remains unrepeatable.

My dear friends, with the beginning of the new year, 1990–1991, I pray that, with God’s help, we may be able to complete the catecheses of Saint Cyril. You will remember that we stopped at the First Mystagogical Catechesis. Saint Cyril—Saint Cyril of Jerusalem—wrote eighteen catecheses for those preparing to be baptized. There is also one catechesis called the Procatechesis, which comes first as a preface, and he also wrote five Mystagogical Catecheses. That makes twenty-four in all: eighteen...
Nineteen with the Procatechesis, and another five makes twenty-four. As we said last year, these five Mystagogical Catecheses are the catecheses that lead people into the Mysteries, or instruct them concerning the Mysteries. For it is well known that no Mystery of our Church can be approached by someone who has not yet been baptized. Baptism is the entrance to the other Mysteries. Let me give you the very simple example that you all know: our little child.
We baptize the child, and then we take the child to receive Holy Communion; but we do not give the child Holy Communion before Baptism. I mention this little example to show you that Baptism is the gateway to the Mysteries, the gateway to the Kingdom of God. Thus, the first two Mystagogical Catecheses—that is, those delivered after the catechumens had been baptized—were nothing other than an introduction to the life of the Mysteries, to the sacramental life. This, then, is precisely what the first two Mystagogical Catecheses are.
They are the Holy Father’s effort to initiate those who had been baptized into the Mystery of Baptism, so that they might be counted worthy to make full use of their Baptism. The Third Mystagogical Catechesis concerns Chrismation; it is entitled “On Chrismation.” The Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis concerns the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist and is entitled, “Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis: On the Body and Blood of Christ.” And the Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis concerns the Divine Liturgy. You see, then, that the Holy Father wished to help those who had been baptized enter into the life of the Church. Since we had not covered...
the First Mystagogical Catechesis, today we shall now speak about the Second Mystagogical Catechesis. This is a continuation of the first, because it too concerns Holy Baptism. I repeat: we must learn what Christian Baptism means so that we can make full use of it, for it is essential that we do so. A Christian who does not make use of his Baptism is like someone whose deceased father has left a very great estate in his name. He was orphaned and never knew his father...
and he dies poor because he knows nothing of the great inheritance his father left him. So we must learn what the Baptism we received truly is. Paragraph one: “The daily Mystagogical Catecheses are useful to you, as are these newer teachings, which proclaim newer realities, especially for you who have been renewed from the old life into the new. Therefore, I must now set before you what follows from yesterday’s Mystagogical Catechesis...”
“...so that you may learn what those things done in the inner chamber symbolized.”
I forgot to tell you that these catecheses were delivered beginning on the day after Pascha. The baptisms took place on the night of Great and Holy Saturday. A remnant of the ancient Baptism of the catechumens is the Liturgy of Saint Basil celebrated on the morning of Great and Holy Saturday. We, however, celebrate that Liturgy in the morning. If you open our service books, you will see that it is the Liturgy of Saint Basil; it is called a Vesperal Liturgy because it is combined with Paschal Vespers. The catechumens were baptized during this Liturgy of Saint Basil combined with Vespers.
On the day after Pascha—that is, on Bright Monday—the first catechesis was delivered. The second was delivered on Bright Tuesday. The five catecheses were given during the first five days of Bright Week, one each day. We, however, shall do what we can to spread these five catecheses over a whole year, because we shall examine them in detail. Yet such explanations continued to be given to Christians regularly. This is why Saint Cyril is brief. His brevity shows that his listeners had already received preliminary instruction in these subjects, just as they had also been instructed beforehand in Holy Scripture.
You have seen how he refers to passages from Holy Scripture, from the Old and New Testaments, in a way that presupposes listeners who know Holy Scripture. So he says that the Mystagogical Catecheses delivered to you each day are useful. You see? Each day. These are called the internal evidence of a text: the text itself gives us certain information. He says that these newer teachings, which speak of newer realities, are useful—especially for you who have been renewed from the old life into the new. “Therefore, I must...” That is, there is a need...
“...to set before you what follows from yesterday’s Mystagogical Catechesis.” “What follows” means the continuation, just as when we say, “and so forth.” It is the continuation of yesterday’s Mystagogical Catechesis, which concerned Baptism, “so that you may learn what those things done by you in the innermost part of the building symbolized.” We said last year that, already in Saint Cyril’s time, baptisteries were in some way connected or joined to the main church building.
There were two chambers. There was an outer chamber—an outer room, so to speak—and there they performed what we now do near the entrance of the church. The priest takes the sponsor and the baby or young child and performs the exorcisms, and so forth. These things took place in the outer part of that building. When they were finished, they entered the inner chamber, where the baptistery was located. The baptistery was usually large and could hold many people at the same time.
Some were smaller. There were steps descending into the ground. The baptistery was usually shaped like a cross, and these steps were found either on one side or on all four sides. The four arms of the Cross—the four ends, as I told you—lay below ground level, beneath the floor. Thus the person being baptized, the one about to receive Baptism, would descend and stand in the water, while the priest remained above on the floor and baptized him, performing both the immersion and the rising from the water. Of course, they were not lifted up as we lift babies from the baptismal font today. That is self-evident.
He says that you are to learn what these things symbolized. Let us see, then, how the Holy Father interprets these symbols. He says:
The next paragraph reads: “As soon as you entered, you took off your tunic; and this was an image of putting off the old man together with his deeds.” His deeds. He says that as soon as you entered the inner chamber, you removed your tunic. People ordinarily wore two, three, four, or even five separate garments, just as we may today. They removed all these and were then left wearing a single tunic.
That process took place in the first chamber, where they put on a single tunic. When they entered for Baptism, they removed this tunic. Today we do not remove the tunic, especially when an adult is baptized. We have a large font, a barrel, or whatever may be available, and today the person is baptized while still wearing the tunic. But in those days they removed it. Saint Cyril says here: “You took off your tunic”—you removed the tunic—“and this was an image of putting off the old man.”
You put off—you stripped away—the old man together with his former deeds. My dear friends, this is how he expresses it. Saint Cyril is using a short phrase from the Apostle Paul, who says in his Epistle to the Colossians: “You have put off the old man with his deeds.” Since, he says, you stripped away the old man together with his deeds, his former deeds. What were those former deeds? They were sins. Thus, he says, you put off the old man. Here, my dear friends, we have a symbol—a symbol, because...
it is, of course, something visible when a person removes his tunic, symbolizing that he is putting off the old man. Yet I would like to tell you from the outset something that Saint Cyril emphasizes further on. He says that Christ was truly crucified. You, however, are crucified symbolically, but the salvation is real. This is of the greatest importance. As we said regarding the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, Christ handed down the Mystery and said, “This is My Body; this is My Blood.” As the Liturgy of Saint Basil says, these are types: the bread is a type...
of the Body of Christ, and the wine is a type of the Blood of Christ. But after the consecration, they are no longer a type but the reality. They are truly the Body of Christ and truly the Blood of Christ. This is the great truth. In the same way, we may say that removing the tunic is a symbol; yet ancestral sin and all personal sins committed up to that moment are truly stripped away and forgiven. Thus, beneath the symbol we have the reality. Never forget this!
Beneath the symbol—or the symbols—we have the reality. Reality: fully real, one hundred percent. And now we continue.
“Having undressed, you were naked, in this also imitating Christ, who was stripped naked upon the Cross and who, by His nakedness, stripped the principalities and powers and openly triumphed over them upon the wood of the Cross.” When he says that you had undressed and were naked—completely naked—you were imitating in this also Jesus Christ, who was naked upon the Cross and who, by His own nakedness, “stripped”...
He stripped and laid bare the principalities and powers—meaning, of course, the demons. “Openly” means publicly, and “triumphed over them upon the wood of the Cross.” We shall examine these words one by one. Here, my beloved, the Apostle Paul says: “Having stripped the principalities and powers.” Who stripped them? Christ, naked upon the Cross. In this phrase, Christ is the subject, while the demons are the object. In other words, He stripped the demons bare. Though He Himself was naked upon the Cross, He laid the demons bare.
“He made a public spectacle of them.” He exposed them and held them up to shame, bringing the demons out into the open. “Openly, triumphing over them”—Paul says “over them”—“in Himself.” Let us consider this. First of all, Saint Cyril says that you were naked, just as Christ was upon the Cross. A little later he adds something else. I shall mention it now, since it follows naturally, and when we reach that point I shall pass over it: you were not ashamed; you felt no shame.
“Imitating Adam of old before the Fall, who was naked and was not ashamed.” He was not ashamed. Indeed, those being baptized were naked. And when Saint Cyril praises them here, he praises them not merely because they felt no shame, but because they were experiencing a state—how can I put this so that we may understand it?—a state that transcended their nakedness. That was the state they were experiencing. Let me give you an example.
When the time came for our military medical examination, three or four of us went together, more or less. We were examined at a school in Athens. We entered the building; the classrooms were on the ground floor, and others could see us from outside because there were windows all around. At the entrance sat the examination boards for the Navy, Air Force, and Army. We undressed, and they examined us, giving us a general physical inspection. They looked us over carefully and checked us, so to speak. Then they told us to dress. We had no time, because we had to hurry to the next board. We would hastily put on only our trousers and pass through carrying the rest of our clothes under our arms. The men among you will know and remember all this.
We went to see which of the three services would take us. I do not know how they make the selection today. You might ask, “Were you not ashamed?” There was no room even to feel ashamed. Why? I remember that one of my former schoolmates was serving on the board, yet, my beloved, I did not even notice him. Why? Because something happens to a person in such circumstances. First, there is the very fact that you are appearing before an examination board, and all that this involves. And then there is nothing there to provoke an impure feeling. Nothing at all. I remember that not even the slightest impure thought crossed my mind, and I believe the same was true of the others.
It was all perfectly innocent. So, you said, “We went to be baptized, and we felt no shame.” No one, so to speak, became tongue-tied. Here is another example. You know that mothers bathe their children, both boys and girls.
Let us take boys as an example. A mother may bathe her son when he is ten or twelve years old, or even older. One woman once told me, “I bathed my son—do not laugh—until he was seventeen.” Be that as it may, I asked her, “Was the boy not ashamed?”
He was not, because he possessed that innocence and simplicity; he had not been corrupted by impure thoughts.
Why, then, did our first parents become ashamed after their sin? Their simplicity in Christ departed. You may object that Christ had not yet come, but yes, I do mean simplicity in Christ; I am not mistaken. And when that simplicity departed—when, we may add, the garment of theosis departed as well, for this was what our first parents wore, the garment of theosis—they became ashamed. Before that, it never even entered their minds that they might feel shame. You may ask, “What, then, is shame?” Now pay attention: shame, my beloved, is a safeguard. What does that mean?
When our first parents fell into disobedience and desired to make themselves divine, every evil would begin to unfold. Yet the part that would be assaulted more than the other members of the body—and history has borne this out—was the sexual faculty. This is why Adam said, “I was ashamed because I was naked,” and God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Who told you?” And God condescended to clothe our first parents: He made garments of skin and clothed them.
For this reason, from then onward, God forbade nakedness. There are some foolish people, devoid of theology and under demonic influence—these nudists—who say, with their foolish arguments, “But Adam and Eve were naked.” And what are you doing now? Are you imitating Adam and Eve? Listen, then, my beloved. If the sexual parts had remained uncovered, then, because humanity had begun its downward course, the sexual instinct would have descended without measure. Therefore, to protect the human person, God now gives him a means of protection. Today, however, when we take off our clothes, we cast off our shame along with them. We are no longer ashamed.
Not at all. Innocent simplicity has departed. As I told you, an older child may still let his mother bathe him. But the child possesses simplicity and has not yet come to know sin. From the moment he begins to understand sin, he also begins to feel shame. This is a protective element: precisely because he feels shame, he covers himself, and by covering himself he is protected from the corruption and distortion of the sexual instinct. This, then, is a blessing. Consequently, we must never expose ourselves.
We must be extremely careful concerning nakedness. It demands great care. Yet just as our first parents were naked, so Christ also stood naked upon the Cross. Naturally, they stripped Him as one condemned. Stripping a condemned man was part of his public humiliation, so that everyone might pass by, stare at him, and spit upon him. Thus they stripped Christ. Iconographers, of course, place a covering upon Him, but in reality Christ was crucified naked.
Pay attention. Let me continue. Our first parents were naked and were not ashamed, because they were clothed in the garment of theosis, the garment of uncreated light. When Christ rose, what happened to those garments? Which garments? The grave clothes. That strip of cloth is called a keiria—spelled with kappa and epsilon-iota, then rho and iota. Keiria; hence the form keiriais, the dative plural, meaning the strip with which they tightly wrapped Christ’s body, together with the myrrh, which was sticky and resinous.
Afterward, they took Him down from the Cross in a linen shroud, as the Evangelists tell us. When Christ rose, He left all these things in the tomb. The Apostle Peter and the Evangelist John saw them as evidence of His Resurrection. But how did Christ appear to the myrrh-bearing women? You may say, “These details sound like idle curiosity.” Is it difficult for God to provide clothing? Of course not. My beloved, Christ was naked when He appeared repeatedly to the myrrh-bearing women and to His disciples, including the second appearance on the Sunday of Thomas.
At the Sea of Tiberias and everywhere else He appeared, Christ was naked. But did they see Him naked? No. To their eyes He was clothed, though Christ Himself was naked. In other words, He could only be as Adam was before the Fall: naked. Thus, after His Resurrection, Christ was naked, but to the eyes of fallen and corrupted human beings He could only appear clothed. He appeared clothed; He was not actually wearing clothes. Why was He not clothed? Because...
Clothing is nothing more than a feature of our condition after the Fall, a product of sinfulness. There was no reason for Christ to have it. If He wore clothes before the Cross, it was because He had entered fully into the human condition. But here is the important question: in the Kingdom of God, when we rise from the graves, shall we be clothed? And when we are taken up into the Kingdom of God, shall we be clothed? No, my beloved. We shall come out of the grave naked, and in the Kingdom of God we shall be naked.
There we shall bring to fulfillment what Adam frustrated in Paradise: “They were naked and were not ashamed.” We shall be naked. This is also why no sinner can have a place in the Kingdom of God—not only because he is punished and must not enter, but because, at death, his desire and sin have become fixed, making him unfit to dwell in the Kingdom of God. But there will be the first robe. Remember the parable of the Prodigal Son: “Bring out the first robe”—the first robe. This is the robe Adam possessed, which we receive through Baptism. Clothed in it, we shall dwell in the Kingdom of God—not, you understand, in...
These clothes are borrowed, as I have told you before. The goats, the sheep, the silkworms, and the cotton plants have lent them to me. These clothes are borrowed; they are not truly mine. I shall no longer need them. I shall be clothed in the first robe, the robe of theosis. It will be uncreated light, and the whole body will be enveloped in radiance. This is why Saint Cyril says here that you undressed and were not ashamed. He regards this as a miracle, because...
In a manner of speaking, at the beginning of their spiritual life and through Baptism, they attained—even if only for a moment—apatheia, freedom from the passions. Of course, the arena of spiritual struggle still lay before them. Apatheia means that I am no longer afflicted by the passions. Let us continue.
In the same passage, where it says that He “stripped the demonic powers”—“stripped” is my own word; the text uses another expression—Saint John Chrysostom explains that Christ revealed to mankind what the demons truly were. How did this happen? This is the meaning of the words, “He made a public spectacle of them.” To make a spectacle of someone means to expose them publicly or put them openly to shame. What does that mean here? It is well known that the demons appeared as gods, and people offered sacrifices to those gods. Does not the Psalmist say, “The idols of the nations are demons”?
“The idols of the nations are demons.” Zeus—the statue of Zeus—Demeter, Athena, and whatever other deity there might have been: they were demons. And people worshipped these demons. They did not regard them as demons, but as gods. Now, however, Christ publicly reveals that the beings people worshipped in idolatry were demons.
Let me also explain the words “openly” or “publicly.” Pay attention here. This public exposure did indeed take place in history, though not at the very hour of the Cross, but later. When the Apostles began to preach, for example, they exposed idolatry and revealed the presence of the demons. But in the first instance, the Apostle Paul’s words here, “He made a public spectacle of them,” refer to what took place before the eyes of the angels. The stripping and exposure of the demons was made visible to the angels. But let us continue.
Saint Cyril asks: What did the demons do? He says that they “made their nests within.” To make a nest within means to establish one’s nest in the members of the human body. This is said again and again in the prayers of Baptism. So I ask you, whenever you attend a Baptism, to listen carefully to the prayers. You may say to me...
Mmph... You may say, “Are they even being said?” I do not know; you may be right. Take a Euchologion, then, and sit down at home and read these prayers for yourselves, so that you may see what they say. For very often, as they are recited by many of my fellow priests, they cannot be heard or understood. Pay attention, then. What does it mean when we say that “the demonic powers make their nests within”? It means that they establish their nest within.
Well... When those large, teased hairstyles first became fashionable many years ago, people would spray something into them. What is it they put on their hair to make it stand upright? Many years ago, perhaps thirty years ago, the following incident was reported.
Those hairstyles could not be washed, because they would be ruined. And in one young woman’s hair, cockroaches had made their nests. Do you remember? It was reported in the newspapers. Oh, those cockroaches! I gave you this example to show you what it means to make a nest within. The verb means to establish one’s nest inside something. That is its meaning: to make a nest within. Where? In the members of the human body. Let me give you an example from the New Testament. There was that devout woman who was bent over, to whom Christ spoke.
She listened to the Word of God in the synagogue, and the Lord called her a daughter of Abraham. He said that Satan had bound her for eighteen years. What had he bound? Her spine. She was bent over—terribly bent over. What does it mean that he had bound her? It means that he had made his nest in that part of her body and caused damage there. Pay attention: this indwelling, this nesting within, is not a figure of speech or a literary expression. It is a reality. This is why we make the sign of the Cross over a person, why we sprinkle the person with holy water, and why we do all these things: precisely in order to drive them out.
Demons make their nests within. This is a reality. That is how it is. Then, concerning the garment, Saint Cyril says: You took off the garment you had been wearing, and after Baptism you put on a white garment. But regarding the garment you removed before entering the baptismal font—the old garment—he says, “I certainly do not mean this visible garment.” He does not mean the visible garment. Which visible garment? The clothes we wear. No, he says, but the old man, the spiritual garment. You cannot remove your own skin. What else could you take off? You cannot do so literally.
This is expressed through a symbol: the removal of your garment as you go to be baptized. You have seen that as soon as we receive the little child from the prayers of exorcism, we undress the child. This is the garment. We undress the child and bring the child before the baptismal font. This, then, signifies the casting off of the old man. And Saint Cyril continues.
“May the soul that has once taken off this garment never put it on again; rather,” he says, “may it speak like the bride of Christ in the Song of Songs: ‘I have taken off my garment; how shall I put it on again?’” This garment you removed is the old man.
Here, my beloved, I do not know whether I ought to weep.
God forbid, he says, that you should ever put it on again. We have cast off our old condition. Can we put that old condition on again? Yes. Very simply, and tragically for us, neither the upbringing provided at home nor, sadly, the Church’s care through regular and thorough catechesis is what it ought to be—much less the influence of society, our schools, and everything else. And so our children put the old garment on again and grow up wearing it throughout their lives. As I said in the first catechesis, if you remember, the demons return because they had been driven out.
They return, He says, fiercer than before. This is why I have dealings with many demon-possessed people.
I want you to take this seriously; it is a serious matter. I have been baptized, and therefore I must no longer sin. Once, a missionary baptized an Indian man as a Christian and then departed. Many years later, the missionary returned to that place and asked the man whether he wished to make his confession and whether he had committed any sins. The man replied, “No, I have done nothing.” “But why not?” the missionary asked. “Because,” he said, “I was baptized, and I am careful.” The early Christians had this same attitude. Yet our God and Lord, in His loving-kindness, knows how readily human nature slips and slides toward sin. He therefore gave us a second Baptism, one that may be repeated: the Baptism of metanoia, of repentance. The first Baptism can never be repeated. And so He gives us the second. We have soiled the garment, stained that white garment of incorruption, and now He gives us the Mystery of Repentance so that we may be cleansed again. I think we could find a parallel in what happened to Moses when he went up Mount Sinai to receive the Law. The Law...
...was written by the finger of God, as Holy Scripture states clearly. Moses took two stone tablets with him and went up the mountain. There, the Law was inscribed upon the tablets by the finger of God—and from the New Testament we know that the finger of God is the Holy Spirit. Moses used neither writing materials nor his own hand. As he was coming down, God said to him, “Go down quickly; the people have turned to idolatry.” Moses descended and saw the people worshipping the golden calf they had set up, with dancing, revelry, and sinful feasting. He became so angry that he took the two tablets, threw them down, and shattered them. He said, “A people who think and live this way are not worthy of such divine things. They are not worthy of the Law given by God.” God then said, “Come up the mountain again. Make two new tablets and bring them up, so that I may give you the Law again.” But when Moses went up this time, the tablets were not again inscribed by the finger of God.
Moses himself now wrote them. This is like the first Baptism: the prototype, the great and perfect work, accomplished by the finger of God. We receive the Holy Spirit, redemption, and all the rest. But when we sin and He gives us the second Baptism, this is something much lower. God’s love certainly forgives us, but it is still lower. Would to God that we had never sinned! You may ask, “Is that possible?” What can I say? The first Christians lived that way, so apparently it is possible. Today, under the conditions in which we live, we have reached the point where, even in theory, we say, “Come now! That is impossible,” though it ought to be possible. Nevertheless, Glory to God, the Lord has given us the second Baptism. Saint John Chrysostom likewise says that, strictly speaking, there should have been no need for books, because the Law of God had been written in people’s hearts. But since we have soiled our hearts and can no longer read the Law of God within them, in our conscience, God has given us books; He has given us Holy Scripture. “At least,” Saint John Chrysostom says, “read Holy Scripture.” The Law is no longer written in your heart, but at least read it in the book. The book is, of course, secondary when compared with the prototype...
...the human heart. Saint Cyril then continues by referring to a passage: “May the soul that has once taken off this garment never put it on again; rather, may the soul speak like the bride of Christ in the Song of Songs: ‘I have taken off my garment; how shall I put it on again?’” This is indeed found in the Song of Songs, in chapter five, verse three, where it is expressed most beautifully. I have told you that the Song of Songs is very, very beautiful. In fact, an edition of Saint Gregory of Nyssa’s commentary has recently appeared in the Thessaloniki Patrology series—not Migne’s Patrology, but the Thessaloniki edition.
I saw, to my very great joy, that Saint Gregory of Nyssa had written a commentary on the Song of Songs. If God should ever count us worthy to study this book, we will at least have this aid—or rather, I will have an aid—to see how he interprets it. I am already reading the book. It is most beautiful, truly most beautiful. Now the bride is inside her house, while the Bridegroom is outside. This is Christ and the Church; it is Christ and the soul. He knocks at the door. “Open to me,” He says. And she replies, “How can I rise from my bed?” For in those days, since people walked barefoot or wore inadequate footwear...
their feet would become dusty, and before going to bed they had to wash them. So she says, “I have taken off my tunic”; I have undressed. “How can I put it on again?” she continues, “and soil my feet as well?” Of course, the passage has another interpretation there, but here Saint Cyril uses half a verse to support the point he wishes to make: I have undressed; how can I dress myself again? I have taken off the tunic of sin, of the old life, of the old man; how can I put it on again? And he continues: “O wondrous thing! You were naked in the sight of all,”
“and you were not ashamed.” What a wondrous thing, he says! You were naked before the eyes of everyone, yet you felt no shame. “For truly you bore the likeness of Adam, the first-formed man, who was naked in Paradise and was not ashamed.” You had truly become like Adam, the first-formed man, who felt no shame in Paradise. In other words, you created a new paradise within yourselves, for Baptism is truly a paradise. Indeed, I would say that Baptism is a greater, better, and more blessed paradise than Adam’s ancient
Paradise. And we proceed to the third paragraph: “Then, after you had undressed, you were anointed with exorcised oil, from the very hairs of your head to the soles of your feet, and you became partakers of Jesus Christ, the good olive tree.”
I have written down the passages from Holy Scripture to which he refers, so that I may have at hand what Saint Cyril is speaking about here. “Then,” he says, “after you had undressed”—you had taken off your clothes, pardon me, you had undressed—“you were anointed with oil.” You have seen how the sponsor receives the oil. This oil is not the Chrism; it is simply ordinary oil. The sponsor holds both hands cupped like this, and the priest pours the oil into them after first blessing it. This is significant. Then, with this oil, the sponsor anoints the person being received, the one being baptized, from the crown of the head, he says—from the very hairs of the head—down to the extremities, to the tips of the toes. The entire body is anointed.
In ancient times, wrestlers would anoint their bodies with oil before wrestling so that neither could take hold of the other; as they wrestled, each would slip from the other’s grasp. And because after Baptism the struggle against the demons still remains—we have driven them away, and now we must struggle to defeat them—this is why Christ went into the wilderness. Not, of course, because He Himself needed to struggle. He had no sin whatsoever, nor did demons nest within His holy flesh. Far be it from us to say such a thing!
God forbid! Rather, He gave us a type, a pattern of spiritual struggle. We too must wrestle with the devil, slipping free of his schemes and treacherous devices so that we may escape him. Here, then, Saint Cyril says that you were anointed with oil. But what kind of oil was it? Exorcised oil. The phrase is in the dative case and means “with exorcised oil.” You were anointed from one end to the other, from your head all the way down. “And you became partakers of Jesus Christ, the good olive tree.” You became communicants and partakers of the good olive tree—that is, the cultivated olive tree that bears beautiful olives. And this tree is Christ.
Listen to what the Apostle Paul writes in the Epistle to the Romans. Of course, the Apostle Paul says this in another context, referring to the relationship between the Jews and the Gentiles, but it is important for our subject. “But you,” he says. Who is this “you”? You, the idolater. “Though you were a wild olive shoot”—you were a wild olive tree and did not bear good olives—“you were grafted in among them.” The Greek pronoun is plural and in the dative case: among them. Among whom? Among the Jews. “And you became a fellow partaker of the root and richness of the olive tree.” You came to share in its root and its richness—that is, in the abundance and goodness of that olive tree. Which olive tree? At that time it was the Church of the Jews; now it is the good olive tree called Jesus Christ. As you understand, beloved, the Apostle Paul wishes to say this: At first, mankind was the wild olive tree. But now you have been grafted into the good olive tree called Jesus Christ, the good and cultivated olive tree. “For after being cut from the wild olive tree, you were grafted into the good olive tree.” Having been cut from the wild olive tree, he says, you have now been grafted into the good olive tree.
“You became partakers of the richness of the true olive tree.” You came to share in its richness, that is, in its abundance. The Greek word piotita means fatness and therefore richness. We say that food containing much butter is rich and full; cheese too may be called rich, full, and nourishing. So here you became partakers of this richly abundant olive tree. And take note: this olive tree is true. We have another example which you know, when Christ said, “I am the true vine.” Why did He say “the true vine”? Because Israel was the first vine. Israel failed, and then came Jesus Christ, who, as the God-Man, can never fail. The former good olive tree, Israel, failed; but the true good olive tree, Jesus Christ, has come, and He can never fail. Come, then, O man, and be grafted into the good olive tree, who is Jesus Christ, and you will bear an abundance of spiritual fruit. May the Lord bless you.

Πάρω τα αγόρια. Μπορεί να το πλένει η μάνα του, το παιδί, και αυτό να είναι δέκα και δώδεκα και παραπάνω χρονών. Θα μου πει μια κυρία, εγώ το γιο μου τον έπλενα, μην γελάσετε, δεκαεπτά χρονών. Τέλος πάντων. Και εγώ στο ερώτημα, καλά, το παιδί δεν ντρεπόταν;
Γιατί ντράπηκαν κατόπιν, μετά την αμαρτία τους, οι πρωτόπλαστοι; Έφυγε η εν Χριστώ, ή μου πείτε ο Χριστός τότε, ναι, η εν Χριστώ, δεν κάνω λάθος, απλότης. Και φεύγοντας αυτή η απλότητα, αν θέλετε ακόμη επιπρόσθετα, φεύγοντας και αυτό το ένδυμα της Θεώσεως, γιατί αυτό φορούσαν οι πρωτόπλαστοι, το ένδυμα της Θεώσεως, δεν εντρέποντο. Δεν περνούσε από το μυαλό τους ότι μπορεί να ντρέπονται. Θα μου πείτε, η ντροπή τι είναι; Η ντροπή είναι τώρα, εδώ τώρα προσέξτε, η ντροπή, αγαπητοί μου, είναι ένας ασφαλιστικός παράγων. Τι;
Στο ίδιο χωρίο, αυτό που λέει «ξέντυσε τας διαβολικάς δυνάμεις», το «ξέντυσε» είναι δική μου λέξη, «τας διαβολικάς δυνάμεις», γιατί λέει κάτι άλλο. Ο Ιερός Χρυσόστομος αναφέρει αυτό, ότι δηλαδή απεκάλυψε εις τους ανθρώπους ποιοι ήσαν οι δαίμονες. Πώς έγινε αυτό; Εκεί είναι το «εδειγμάτισεν». Δειγματίζω, παραδειγματίζω, θα πει δημοσιεύω ή δημοσίως καταισχύνω. Τι είναι αυτό; Είναι γνωστό ότι οι δαίμονες ενεφανίζοντο ως θεοί και προσέφεραν οι άνθρωποι θυσίες εις τους θεούς. Δεν λέγει ο Ψαλμωδός «τα είδωλα των εθνών δαιμόνια»;
