Summary

Saint Cyril’s first Mystagogical Catechesis teaches the newly baptized to persevere in Christian life without longing for their former sins. Turning from west to east during the baptismal rite symbolizes leaving darkness and returning toward Paradise, divine light, and communion with Christ. The baptized must remain spiritually vigilant, grounded in the Creed, because the devil continues to seek opportunities to lead believers into error and sin.

Beloved, we are in Saint Cyril’s First Mystagogical Catechesis—that is, in what he now teaches those who have already been baptized. At first they were catechumens preparing for illumination; now they are numbered among the faithful, and he teaches them how they must live the life of Baptism, the Christian life. Saint Cyril therefore devotes two catecheses to Baptism, one to Chrismation, and so on. There are five in all: one on the Holy Eucharist and one on the Divine Liturgy.

There is also the interpretation of the “Our Father.” I am repeating these things, though I have already told you them, because we always have new brethren, and they need to see how what we are about to say connects with what we have already said. We are in the ninth paragraph of the First Mystagogical Catechesis. Those of you who have the book will find it on page 249, under the letter theta, paragraph nine. You remember that Saint Cyril has already told those who are now among his faithful that they must have no thought of turning back. He referred to their former ways, to which they might perhaps...

have taken refuge again, such as the realm of magic, together with everything else we discussed last time and the time before. He warned that if they draw back, the devil will become even more bitter toward them. For this reason, he also mentioned Lot’s wife. She turned back and looked behind her to see what had become of her house, and she became a pillar of salt. It is a deeply instructive story, used not only by Saint Cyril but countless times by the Fathers. That is why he recalls here what the Lord said: “Do not turn back after putting your hand to the plow.”

“Do not turn the course of your life into salt.” Christ’s words about putting one’s hand to the plow were these: “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks behind him, turning back, is fit for the Kingdom of Heaven.” No one who has put his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit or suitable for the Kingdom of God. For truly, if we set out to accomplish something but do not bring it to completion, we have achieved nothing. Remember also the parable of the king setting out to war and of the man building a tower without having enough to finish it.

The builder cannot finish his tower, or the king setting out to war does not have enough men to fight. The Lord says, in effect: You have so many thousands of soldiers, while the other king has more. Where are you going? What are you doing? All this shows that once the believer has set out, he has resolved never to turn back and never to have—and this is a beautiful little phrase—a “memory of returning.” A memory of returning means remembering the old things. Outwardly I may appear not to have turned back, yet inwardly I remember and long for my former life: my debauchery, my amusements, my old male and female companions—in the sinful sense—and so forth. No.

You have put your hand to the plow—to your salvation. Do not, he says, turn the course of your life into salt by looking back; instead, “flee to the mountain, to Jesus Christ.” We said last time—and there is no harm in saying it again—that the two angels told Lot: You will not be saved within the city, so you must flee; nor will you be saved in the country surrounding the city, so you must not remain there either. “Escape to the mountain.” I also mentioned an interpretation I once read in Eugenios Voulgaris: the city is sin; it is the causes of sin.

Forgive me: the city is sin itself, while the surrounding country represents the causes of sin. Neither can save you. In other words, if you commit fornication, you are not saved; and if you watch something pornographic on television, again you are not saved. Do you hear? “Escape to the mountain.” And the mountain, as Saint Cyril says here, is Christ. We must therefore avoid not only sin itself, but also the causes of sin, because salvation is not found there. I have said this to connect our discussion with the next paragraph: “When, therefore, you renounce Satan, trampling underfoot every covenant with him, you dissolve the ancient...”

“covenants with Hades. Paradise is opened to you—the Paradise of God, which He planted toward the east, and from which our forefather was exiled because of his transgression.” There is something very striking and beautiful here. When you declared that you renounced Satan, you said that you were no longer among his ranks: you were leaving him behind and joining yourself to Christ. At that moment you dissolved those covenants. The exact words are: “You dissolve the ancient covenants with Hades.” What are these covenants with Hades?

It is known that a covenant was made—and you may be hearing this for the first time. Isaiah also speaks of it, though the reference given here in the book is chapter seven, where it is not found, so perhaps there is a typographical error. When our first-created ancestors were in Paradise, they made a compact, an agreement, a kind of covenant with the devil. It was a covenant with Hades, because the devil told them that if they tasted the fruit, they would become gods and immortal. “You will become gods.”

“Your eyes will be opened.” And so that covenant was made. It was as though they said: “You have told us this, O Satan, and we accept it. We therefore accept what you have said and enter into an agreement with you. The agreement is that we will taste the fruit, just as you tell us to do.”

They would become gods—and they tasted the fruit. That is the covenant. But not only did they fail to become gods; they also inherited death. This is why Saint Cyril says here, “You dissolve the ancient covenants with Hades.” For, poor and wretched man, instead of becoming a god, you went down into Hades.

Indeed, this compact—this covenant with the devil—was made, listen carefully, by the whole human race of every century and every age, in the person of our forefather Adam. This brings me to my point. You know, ancestral sin involves many things; it has many dimensions. There is real subtlety in understanding precisely what ancestral sin is. This is why I told you that in the person of Adam the whole human race sinned. Why? Because the whole human race was present in the loins of Adam.

All Israel was present in the loins of Abraham. Thus Levi paid the tithe even though Levi had not yet been born. Levi, you see, was Abraham’s great-grandson. Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot twelve sons, one of whom was Levi. Abraham gave a tithe—a tenth of the spoils—from...

a war that had taken place, and so forth, to Melchizedek.

There, the Apostle Paul explains to us, Levi also gave the tithe, though he had not yet been born. Indeed, if you wish, even Isaac had not yet been born. How, then, did Levi pay the tithe? This involves profound theology. Paul says that Christ is a priest according to the order of Melchizedek, and the second Psalm says the same; no one can falsify this passage. I use the word “falsify” because there is an issue concerning falsification by the Jews, especially in connection with the documents from Qumran, and so forth. We shall discuss that next year.

You may ask me something about it then, and we shall discuss it—not now. Thus Levi, while still in the loins of Abraham, paid the tithe to Melchizedek. Now, if Christ is a priest according to the order of Melchizedek, then He is greater than the priesthood according to the order of Levi, since Levi paid the tithe to Melchizedek in the person of his great-grandfather Abraham. I have told you this to explain why the whole human race, being present in the loins of Adam, pays—or rather, accepts—the covenant Adam makes with Satan: a covenant with Hades.

A covenant with death. I know you may say: “But what becomes of the person in all this? What about personal responsibility? What fault would there be in me? If I had been asked, for example, I would have said that I refused to make such a covenant with Satan.” I shall answer you. First of all, you know that what we are saying is not empty talk. We are going more deeply into the Mystery of Baptism, into the theology of the Mystery of Baptism, so that we may understand why we are baptized—for Baptism delivers us from all these things. So, I shall answer you. First of all!

If the devil came to us today and offered us theosis, we would listen to him and would personally commit the same sin. Do not forget that ancestral sin is personally repeated by every human being in every century and every age. It is repeated! For every human being in every age seeks autonomy. And ancestral sin was the pursuit of theosis without God. Therefore, since every person seeks autonomy, each one repeats ancestral sin. Indeed, our own age seeks above all the autonomy of...

the human person, but...

The New Adam comes—and it is not I who call Christ the New Adam; the New Testament does so, through the Apostle Paul—and He comes to establish His New Covenant, a new covenant. Why is it new? Not only in relation to the Old Testament.

and also that most ancient covenant which man made with the devil. Christ’s Covenant comes to dissolve, not the Old Testament, but that covenant which man made with the devil in Paradise. It comes to abolish it. And we know that when there is a newer covenant, it supersedes the old one. Pay attention.

This is what happens. Our first parents entered into that covenant in a particular way. You may ask, did they go to a notary’s office? Were documents drawn up? No. It was done through what we call faith—I emphasize, faith. They believed the devil, and in this way the agreement was confirmed. They stretched out their hands and ate the fruit. Then the New Adam comes and again uses the same means—faith—as though saying, “O men, O Adam, you believed the devil.”

You were lost. You perished. But if you now believe in Me, the New Adam, you will be saved. And so that former covenant is broken and destroyed; it is literally dissolved through the covenant that each believer, each free human person, now makes with the New Adam. Pay attention: this happens in Baptism. Now, if you ask—and I want to anticipate your objections and try, as far as I can, to answer them—if you ask, “But what about all those who lived before Christ?”

What about all those whom the preaching of the Gospel had not yet reached—not by the first century, nor by the fifth, the tenth, the fifteenth, the eighteenth, or even the twentieth? What about all these people, both before Christ and after Christ? Well, no one is treated unjustly. They will be saved. How? When Christ descended into Hades, those who had lived before Christ and then believed in Him were saved. Who believed? Those who were disposed to believe—that is, those who would have believed if Christ had come during their earthly lives.

They believed in Christ in Hades. Therefore, those who lived before Christ were not treated unjustly. As for those who lived after Christ, as Paul tells us, they will be judged according to the law of conscience implanted within them. Thus we see that God treats no one unjustly. And this is our great concern: He treats no one unjustly. God “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” This is so even for those who lived before Christ, for someone might ask, “Why did Christ not come while Adam was still alive? Why did He come whole ages and millennia after Adam?”

Yet God treats no one unjustly. Do you understand? And so, my beloved, Baptism breaks the covenant with Hades and with the devil, and establishes a covenant with Christ, the New Adam—a covenant of eternal life. Once that former covenant has been dissolved, “the Paradise of God is opened to you, which He planted toward the east, and from which our forefather was exiled because of his transgression.” Let us examine this. He says that Paradise is now opened to you.

God planted it toward the east—eastward, Scripture says, in Eden—and because of our forefather’s transgression, we stood exiled from it. He was exiled, we were exiled, and we continue to exile ourselves. “And the symbol of this is your turning from west to east, toward the dwelling place of light.” Therefore, he says, when you were about to be baptized, you stood in the outer chamber, not in the inner chamber. We shall examine what happens in the inner chamber later, in the Second Catechesis. You were facing west, as we explained last time. Now, he says, you are commanded to turn toward the east.

We stand holding the child—the godparent, the sponsor, holds the child—and we face west while the exorcisms are read. Then we turn toward the east and approach the baptismal font, still facing east. In essence, he says, under your old covenant you were looking westward, in the direction toward which the devil had turned you.

These things, of course, are symbols. He will tell us very plainly a little further on that they are symbols. You were facing the darkness, because when the sun sets, darkness comes. That was the old covenant. Now you turn back toward the east. Toward what? Toward the place where God planted Paradise, from which Adam departed.

Now you turn back toward that place, the dwelling place of light. Here “dwelling place” simply means the place where the light is.

Do you understand what I said earlier? Let me state it more clearly. In Baptism we have, so to speak, a representation of our Fall and our rising again. These things unfold before us almost like a dramatic enactment, a sacred rite showing who I was and who I may now become. But there is this difference: the symbols are enacted sacramentally, while the salvation itself is real. I have a question here that was asked last year, which I was unable to answer at the time.

Someone said, “We read in a Christian periodical that the Divine Liturgy is a representation. Is that not a dreadful thing to say?” No, it is a representation, but with this essential difference: when a theater presents a reenactment of a battle—a naval battle at Salamis, for example, or the Battle of Marathon—we do not actually return to that event. It is only a reenactment. In the Divine Liturgy we speak of the first entrance, the second entrance, this and that, the Proskomide, and the Holy Table. All these are symbols. So there is a representation, but with this tremendous difference: in an ordinary reenactment, the people who fought do not come alive again. We simply honor those who were victorious.

We may commemorate the Battle of Marathon, but here we have the living Jesus Christ. That is the great difference. There we truly have the Body and Blood of Christ, surrounded by a visible presentation—I will now replace the word “representation” with “visible presentation”—through which I can experience, in a perceptible way, the events and decisive moments in Christ’s life: the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, for that is essentially what it is. I experience them and, as it were, see them with my own eyes. But the heart of it is real, because Christ Himself is truly present. The Body and Blood of Christ are not symbols.

They are truly the Body and Blood of Christ. God willing, if we live and God wills it, we shall examine this next year in Saint Cyril’s Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis and see how he speaks about the Body and Blood of Christ. So too here: these things are symbols, but at their heart lies an overwhelming reality. What is that reality? The salvation of man. Man’s salvation is real. Yet man enters into it in two ways—pay attention to this point—in two ways. First, he retraces his own course, the course humanity has followed since Adam: he was in Paradise, lost it, remained outside, and entered into a covenant with Hades and with death.

Then Christ comes, and this is the second aspect, so that man may enter into Christ’s own course and become united with Him. This is very important. The word “united” is not mine; it belongs to the Apostle Paul. Man enters into Christ’s course and receives salvation in his very being.

Is this merely symbolic? No, it is real salvation, because in this way man will rise bodily to eternal life. It is a real resurrection—truly real. Nothing in what follows is merely symbolic. The real human person will enter the real Kingdom of God and attain the real theoria, the divine vision of the person of Jesus Christ. We shall examine this, especially in the Second Catechesis, though we will not have time to reach it this year. There we shall see precisely how man enters the baptismal font. Pay attention: the font is not only death, for we are baptized into Christ’s death. At the same time, the font is also a womb, and from a womb a living being comes forth. Let me remind you very briefly of this, since we are about to interrupt our series, so that you may have a somewhat more complete picture.

Nicodemus visited the Lord one night.

The Lord spoke to him about rebirth, and Nicodemus asked, “What does this mean? Must I enter again?” What a naïve question! “Must I,” he said, “enter my mother’s womb again?” And the Lord answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born from above, through water and the Spirit, he cannot be saved; he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.” This birth “through water and the Spirit” is the Mystery of Baptism. It is neither through the Holy Spirit without water, nor through water without the Holy Spirit. The Lord had spoken of rebirth, but Nicodemus understood it in a crude, literal way and asked, “Must I enter my mother’s belly, my mother’s womb, again?”

Now this birth “through water and the Spirit” is accomplished in the baptismal font. The font, therefore, is not only death and a tomb. Through the threefold immersion and rising from the water, it is not only the resurrection of the dead; it is also the womb of man’s rebirth. For this reason, Saint Cyril speaks about rebirth in his Second Catechesis. Saint Cyril then continues: “At that time you were told to say: ‘I believe in the Father, and in the Son, and in the Holy Spirit, and in one Baptism of repentance.’”

“In the preceding catecheses, these things were explained at length, insofar as the grace of God granted.” In other words, he says, at that time you were told to say: “I believe in the Father, and in the Son, and in the Holy Spirit, and in one Baptism of repentance.” In the preceding catecheses—the catecheses addressed to those preparing for illumination—we spoke about these things at length, insofar as the grace of God granted. Let us now examine this, my beloved. You know that at this point he is always referring to what we might call the outer chamber—

The baptistery is divided into two parts, and the Baptism itself takes place in the inner chamber. In the outer part of the baptistery, the exorcisms are performed and the declarations are made: “I renounce him,” “I unite myself to Christ,” and so forth. We know that when a person declares that he unites himself to Christ, he is then told to say—today the sponsor says it on behalf of the one being sponsored, the person being baptized—“I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,” and so forth. Saint Cyril condenses this and says, “I believe in the Father.” After the Nicene Creed has said certain things about the Father, it continues, “and in the Son,” with certain articles concerning Him, and then, “and in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life.”

All this, then, is condensed here, at least in its wording: “I believe in the Father and in the Son and in the Holy Spirit, and in one Baptism of repentance.” Notice that the sponsor says, “I believe in one God,” and so forth. Let me make an observation here. A great many sponsors do not even know how to recite the Creed. What, then, could we say about their understanding of its content? And yet they undertake to become sponsors. I have told you before, and I tell you once again: be very careful when you undertake to become a sponsor. You should do so only when you know that

you are able to catechize the child and help the child as he or she grows. Become a sponsor if you also know that the child’s parents will allow you to help their child spiritually. But when you know that their criteria are entirely worldly, and that they invite you to become a sponsor merely for social appearances, while their convictions will not allow you to catechize their child—they may be materialists or whatever else—then, my dear friends, do not hesitate to say, “Thank you for the honor you have shown me.”

“I will not be able to undertake this responsibility.” “Why?” “Well, I simply will not be able to undertake it.” Do not offer too many explanations, because you may even end up being punched. Forgive me, but some people do not understand such things. Simply say, “Forgive me, but I will not be able to undertake it.” So take great care in this matter, because the sponsor’s responsibility is considerable. Of course, you may say that the Church assumes the work of catechesis. Then what can the sponsor do? He provides whatever further support is needed. It is like the sponsor at a wedding. What is the role of a wedding sponsor? Do you know? The wedding sponsor is the person who helps the couple if things are not going well. He does not interfere or intrude into the couple’s life.

God forbid that he should intrude into the couple’s life. But if the peace of their life together is disturbed, or their marriage is in danger of breaking apart, then the wedding sponsor comes and says, “I placed the crowns upon you. Now then, let us see: what differences have arisen between you?” That is the role and position of the wedding sponsor. He does not interfere, but he watches over the couple and sees how they are doing. The same is true of a sponsor and the child he baptizes. The Church, of course, unquestionably has the primary responsibility for catechesis. Yet the sponsor also keeps watch, follows the child’s progress, and observes.

How is his godchild doing? Is he doing well or not? The sponsor therefore bears responsibility not only for doctrinal catechesis but also for the child’s lived spiritual experience. Is my child, my godchild, becoming entangled with bad company? Is he living a spiritual life or not? Does he receive Holy Communion? Does he pray? How is his spiritual life as a whole? The sponsor bears responsibility for these things. But now, pay attention: I shall return to the covenant with Hades. There, God was denied. Yes, because when our first parents listened to Satan, they were in essence denying God. Now, however, we have an

affirmation of God. When does this take place? At the moment a person is baptized and confesses the One whom, back then, while still in Adam’s loins, he had denied. And what does he say? “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,” and so forth. Thus the Creed also signifies a return to and acknowledgment of the covenant Adam had made with God, into which the devil came and inserted a counterfeit covenant. “No,” the devil said, “things are not as God told you; they are like this instead.” That counterfeit covenant is now dissolved, and man comes to acknowledge the Holy Triune God. This is clearly expressed in the Creed, as I have emphasized to you: we do not say merely, “I believe in God,” but, “I believe in the Father and in the Son and in the Holy Spirit,” precisely so that we may confess and accept the Holy Triune God. Paragraph ten says: “Therefore, secure yourself in this confession and be watchful. For our adversary the devil, as was just read, walks about like a lion, seeking someone to devour. In former

times death prevailed and swallowed men up; but after the holy washing of regeneration, God wiped away every tear from every face. For you no longer mourn, having put off the old man, but you rejoice, having put on Jesus Christ as the garment of salvation.” In this tenth paragraph we are told: since you know these things and have confessed them, make them your security. Secure yourself in these words. My dear friends, the confession we make—and which we later learn, study, and read—will protect us from every wind of human teaching, to use the Apostle Paul’s words, and from every error that may arise. There we shall find our security. What did I confess? That is what I shall persist in confessing. But after saying, “Secure yourself in these words,” Saint Cyril adds, “Be watchful.” Allow me to say a few words about this command. Literally, the Greek word means to abstain from wine and therefore to have a very calm and collected mind.

A clear mind. Thus one is sober and watchful, possessing a watchful nous, a clear spiritual intellect. In the spiritual life, this word is also used by the Apostle Paul when he tells Timothy, “But you, be watchful in all things.” It was used very widely by the Fathers of our Church, especially the Desert Fathers, who came to be called the Neptic Fathers, the Fathers of watchfulness. From this word come the terms “neptic” and “neptic theology,” and so forth. It means: keep your nous clear.

Keep your heart pure, so that you may discern what is spiritually beneficial to you. You must also be able to see—for he next says, “For our adversary”—the hostile powers, to perceive the devil behind them, and to recognize the intention with which he comes and approaches you. You certainly cannot see this unless you practice nepsis, watchfulness. Let me give you the definition of nepsis according to the Neptic Fathers: “Nepsis is what is also called the guarding of the nous and purity of heart.” Nepsis is also called

the guarding of your nous. Do not admit into your spiritual intellect things that should not enter it. Guard your nous, and in this way preserve purity of heart. When does the heart remain pure? When the nous is guarded. My dear friends, our entire spiritual life revolves around this.

Every other approach is futile. This is the way in which we can live the spiritual life. Let me say it once again: let us not waste our effort on other things. Why do I say this? Because we imagine that by other means we shall attain the spiritual life and, consequently, our salvation. After all, if I do not attain salvation, what purpose does the spiritual life serve?

The spiritual life will bring us to the acquisition of the Holy Spirit. But do we truly desire this? In what way do we desire it? We do not keep our nous watchful, nor do we keep our heart pure. For what does Saint Cyril say? “Be watchful.” What is nepsis? The guarding of the nous and purity of heart. When I turn on the television and watch pornographic things,

tell me, what kind of guarding of the nous do I possess? And if I do not guard the nous, how filthy my heart becomes! From the things my nous sees and thinks about, my heart begins to give birth to evil desires. Therefore, we have neither guarding of the nous nor purity of heart. And do not forget what the Lord said: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” This is the foundation of the spiritual life. Let us not deceive ourselves into thinking that we can attain the spiritual life in some other way. If we begin in this manner, the Fathers say that, if you truly desire it—pay attention—you can become a saint within twenty-four hours. How can that happen? Through precisely what we are discussing now. You may ask, “Can I truly become a saint?” Listen carefully: I can become a saint, but I must preserve what I have acquired. I must preserve it, just as I might acquire, let us say, money

in a single moment. The problem is not only how I shall acquire it, but also how I shall preserve it, because I may lose what I gained. Preservation, then, is a very important matter. Let us continue. Why does he say, “Be watchful”? “For our adversary the devil...” Why is the devil called our adversary? An adversary, an adversary—why? Because he lays claim to us. When I was young, I imagined that the devil—and I believe many others may imagine something similar—tries to win people, human souls, away from God,

that he has a kingdom of his own and wants to take as many people as possible away from God.

But the devil himself will be in Hell and will himself be tormented—first he, and then the people who have accepted him. He has nothing to offer human beings except the satisfaction of his envy. Nothing else. And the satisfaction of his hatred, for the devil envies and hates man. He has nothing else to gain. Satan’s envy and hatred are irrational. You asked me to explain the three points, did you not? We shall discuss them. They are irrational. Why are you envious? There is no answer. You too were once a creature of God.

You dwelt in the realms of light above, and you fell. Why? Why do you envy man? Because you fell? Ah, so you fell. This is the psychology of one who falls and then hates and envies the person who remains standing. The devil sees man, a creature of God, and fears that man will gain what he himself failed to gain. So he envies and hates man and brings about his fall. And now notice this: the devil is our adversary. “As you have just heard in the reading, he walks about like a lion, seeking someone to devour.” He roams about, looking for someone to swallow. Suppose you heard on the radio

that in the city,

in the streets of our city of Larissa, a lion that escaped from a circus is roaming free. What would you do? Would you pick up your handbag and go shopping? Suppose the radio announced, “It is prowling around the central square.” Would you go there to browse the shop windows? Would you take your little child along in a stroller so that you could enjoy the outing? Or would you shut yourselves inside your homes? My dear friends, the devil walks about through the streets of this earth, seeking someone to devour, seeking someone to devour. And this is a dreadful thing. He appears as a lion.

A lion. And do not forget that this was written by the Apostle Peter. Like a roaring lion, he seeks someone to devour. “In former times, however, death prevailed and swallowed them up.” In the time before Christ, it swallowed everyone, because death had prevailed. And so you understand that they were all indeed prey to that dreadful lion called the devil. “But through the holy washing of regeneration, God has wiped away every tear from every face.” Now, however, he says,

“through the holy washing of regeneration.” Here we encounter, in passing, the word “regeneration,” because he will explain it further in the next catechesis. The word is found in the New Testament, when the Lord said, “in the regeneration,” and so forth. Therefore, “it shall be given back,” and so on. What is regeneration? It is re-creation. That is what regeneration means. The Greek word is written with one nu. It does not mean simply being born again, but coming into being again—that is, the re-creation of the human person.

This element of our re-creation is Baptism, the holy washing, as he calls it here. You see, then, that the baptismal font is a womb. It is not only a tomb and death, but also a womb of rebirth. I said: death. Unless we die with Christ and rise with Christ, we cannot enter the Kingdom of God. How does one die in Baptism? By being immersed in the water. What does that signify? A tomb. I am beneath the water. I have died. It is a tomb.

Death. But I must die with Christ. Christ died upon the Cross; I too will die with Him. The Apostle Paul said that the world had died to him. Sin had died. In this way we shall die to sin and die to the world, and then we shall rise with Christ. We shall rise with Him; He will raise us. First, however, we shall rise spiritually, and afterward will come our ontological resurrection, the resurrection of our whole being. This is precisely what rebirth is. And so, for the fifth time I will say it: Baptism—the baptismal font—is death, resurrection, and rebirth. “God has wiped away every tear from every face, for you no longer mourn.” God has removed every tear from every face. You do not mourn, “since you have put off” the old man. We shall examine “putting off” and “putting on” in the next catechesis. “Instead, you rejoice, clothed in the garment of salvation, Jesus Christ.” Here we have two things, which he will explain more fully later. The first is the putting off of the evils that...

entered the world—the moral evils that came into the world. These are tears, mourning, and death. To sum them up: sickness, the hardship of life, and sweat—all the toil and sweat required to earn one’s bread—and finally death, which sets its seal upon them all. These are the evils that entered the world as a result of the transgression. Now, he says, they are passing away. You take them off as you take off a shirt. This is what it means to put them off. For these things—if you ask me how this shirt is taken off...

Pay attention. These things, even death itself, do not come from God. The Wisdom of Solomon says, “God did not make death.” He did not make death, much less all that accompanies it: mourning and the rest. “But through the envy of the devil,” death entered human life. Thus even death is nothing more than a garment; that is, it lies outside my true being. And when I am clothed, what shall I put on? The positive realities: immortality and incorruption. These will belong to my true being,

to my true being—to what I truly am. This is why the Apostle Paul says to the Corinthians, “For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.” Did you notice that verb, “put on”? Putting off and putting on. We put on the garment of the earthly man, the garment of death. Now we take it off. In those days, you know, people were baptized completely naked. Completely naked, he will say later, and you were not ashamed. We shall speak of these things next year, God willing—if God wills and we live. And now we put on the garment of incorruption, immortality, and holiness. The white robe worn afterward is the symbol of all these things. Here, my dear friends, he now concludes with “the garment of salvation.” What is the garment of salvation, the garment of our salvation? It is Jesus Christ. We put on Christ. “As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” You have put on Christ like another garment. And he concludes: “These things took place in the outer chamber.” All these things occurred in the outer part of the baptistery. “But, God willing”—if God wills—

“in the Mystagogical Catecheses that follow, when we enter the Holy of Holies,” we shall go farther within—although they had, of course, already been baptized—“there we shall come to understand the symbols of the rites performed there.” There we shall understand what this means and what that means. “To God be glory, dominion, and majesty, together with the Son and the Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages. Amen.” Here, my dear friends, Saint Cyril brings his first Mystagogical Catechesis to an end. And with this conclusion, we too come to the end, glorifying God, who counted us worthy once again this year to complete this entire body of material—such wondrous teaching by which we are instructed in the faith.

«πρὸς τὸν ᾍδην συνθήκας. Ἀνοίγεταί σοι ὁ Παράδεισος τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὃν ἐφύτευσε κατὰ ἀνατολάς, ὅθεν διὰ τὴν παράβασιν ἐξόριστος γέγονεν ὁ ἡμέτερος προπάτωρ». Εδώ έχει κάτι πολύ χαρακτηριστικό και ωραίο. Όταν λέγει, είπες ότι αποτάσσεσαι, δεν είσαι στις τάξεις πια του Σατανά, φεύγεις, αναχωρείς και συντάσσεσαι με τον Χριστό, τότε λύεις τις συνθήκες. Επί λέξει: «λύεις τὰς παλαιὰς πρὸς τὸν ᾍδην συνθήκας». Ποιες είναι αυτές οι συνθήκες με τον Άδη;

Ματαιοπονούμε κατ' άλλους τρόπους. Εδώ είναι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο μπορούμε να ζήσουμε την πνευματική ζωή. Το ξαναπώ άλλη μια φορά: μην ματαιοπονούμε σε άλλα πράγματα. Γιατί το λέγω αυτό; Γιατί εμείς νομίζουμε ότι θα μπορέσουμε να επιτύχουμε την πνευματική ζωή και, κατ' επέκταση, τη σωτηρία μας. Γιατί αλλιώς, αν δεν έχω τη σωτηρία, τότε τι μου χρειάζεται η πνευματική ζωή;
