Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s first Mystagogical Catechesis presents Baptism as both renunciation of Satan and union with Christ. Christians should trust the Precious Cross as their true protection, provided they believe in the crucified Christ rather than treating the Cross as a mere ornament. Because occult practices direct trust and worship away from God toward demons and created things, Saint Cyril commands the faithful to flee them completely.

We are still in the first Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. So far, we have seen—and we continue to see—that in the vestibule before the main baptismal chamber, two acts are solemnly performed: a renunciation and an allegiance. There is a renunciation of the ranks of Satan: “I renounce you, Satan.” And there is an allegiance: “I unite myself to Christ.” This is what we see next. Here, as we have seen, the candidate says, “I renounce all your works.”
His works, as we said, are sins: “and all your pomp.” We have seen what this pomp is. It includes carnival revelry, frenzied dancing, indecent theatrical performances, hunting—as we said last time—and horse racing. And alongside horse racing, as we also said last time, there is football. Saint Cyril describes horse racing in words that could apply even more aptly to football: “the bloodthirsty spectacle that brutalizes souls.” It is a spectacle that drives the spectators into a frenzy.
Does this need proof? It brutalizes souls and makes them coarse. We see that people absorbed in football eventually acquire a coarse soul. They carry the mentality of the football ground and the stadium into their own souls, their homes, and their workplaces. Worse still, we might say, such people have no depth when it comes to the things that ought to concern every human being. A person has many important concerns.
A person must keep those concerns before him at every moment. But when someone is shallow and superficial, he does not even suspect that all these great matters exist and that every human being should attend to them. These are the things we discussed last time, including hatred, pagan festivals, and the meats or loaves hung up as offerings. All these belong to the pomp of the devil. We also considered the worship of the devil. What does the person about to be baptized say? “I renounce you, Satan, and your worship, your works, your pomp, and your worship.” And we explained what that worship is.
We spoke about “lighting lamps”—that is, lighting oil lamps or burning incense at springs and rivers because the demons have prompted you to do so for health or healing. Someone says, “Prayers must be read over this person, and he must be censed.” Be careful: this is not the censing performed within the life of faith, for we use incense in our Church. This is something else. It involves formulas that are either purely demonic or a mixture of ecclesiastical and demonic words, and this is often how people are deceived. We also saw what omen-reading is: observing omens.
Up to this point, we have explained what all these things associated with the realm of Satan and the devil mean. Saint Cyril continues: “Do not practice any of these things: omen-reading, divination, divination through chance signs, amulets, inscriptions on metal plates, magic, or any other evil arts. All such things are worship of the devil. Flee from them.” Keep far away from all these things, because they constitute worship of the devil. We shall now see what divination is. Of course, we cannot give a complete analysis here; that would be impossible. We shall only give a brief, very brief...
outline of the subject. What is divination? It includes all the various methods used to decipher the future. What will happen to me? What is going to take place? One example is coffee-ground reading, which is extremely common. Women engage in it more often, though certainly men do as well. We visit someone’s home and are served coffee. Then either one of the guests or the lady of the house takes the little cup, examines it, and begins drawing conclusions: “I see lines; I see this; I see that.” This is called coffee-ground divination: attempting to decipher...
what will happen to you tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, next year, or later in your life. Then there is divination by fowl. How did the rooster crow? You know the case in which a hen sometimes crows like a rooster—not the cackling she makes after laying an egg. When a hen lays an egg, she cackles as though saying, “I have laid an egg; come and see it.” We apply this image to human beings, even though God simply made the hen cackle that way. That is how God willed it. But we transfer it to a person and say that someone who does something and wants praise goes around proclaiming it. I do not mean that kind of cackling, but the case in which a hen crows like a rooster. This is considered...
a bad sign. Someone in the household will die, they say. The lady of the house immediately grabs the hen and a knife and cuts its throat. “So you are telling us that someone is going to die? Then you will be the one to die.” I only do not know whether they eventually eat that hen or not. There is also bibliomancy, which is extremely common. They use the Synopsis prayer book or even Holy Scripture, and they wager money and do similar things—forgive me. Bibliomancy means opening a book at random. Students often do this with a mathematics or physics book, for example. They open it to see what subject will come up, believing that whatever page appears...
is what will be set in the examination. Another form is key divination. They place a key inside the Gospel or the Synopsis prayer book. I do not know exactly how it is done, but the key moves because some force is produced. That movement supposedly reveals certain things, and so it becomes a form of divination, and so on and so forth. There are even incredible practices in which, as I told you, religious acts are mixed in. You have surely often seen a coin stuck onto an icon—a metal coin, not a banknote. Thank you.
Women—mainly women—do this. They go and press the coin against the icon. If it sticks and does not fall, but remains on the icon or its glass, this means that whatever the woman has asked for at that moment will happen. If the coin does not stick but falls—the icon may be leaning slightly forward, so how could the coin possibly remain there?—this means that her requests will not be granted. “So You will not give these things to me, my God? You will give them to me whether You want to or not!” She takes a little wax, sticks it to the coin, and then, of course, the coin adheres to the glass. You understand that all these things are forms of divination. Do you know...
how many forms divination takes? You cannot imagine. The examples are countless. They have never all been written down, nor could they be, because anyone can invent his own form of divination. Someone might say, “If this or that happens, then matters will turn out this way or that way.” He invents his own signs and watches how things unfold. Is that not so? A hunter sets out, for example. “Ah,” he says, “I saw a black cat.” So he turns back. He will catch nothing, he thinks, because the hunt is bound to fail. He will find nothing—not so much as a feather. There is no point in going through the woods after seeing a black cat, and so on. Everyone invents whatever signs he pleases.
My beloved, this is divination. Saint Cyril then speaks of “divination through chance signs.” These are the various forms of kledon divination. They are a branch of omen-reading, which we discussed earlier, and are nothing other than an invocation of demons, asking them to reveal through predictive signs whether this or that will happen. These practices involving the kledon are a kind of demonic prophecy.
Saint Cyril says, “or amulets.” What are these amulets, the periapta? Notice that in Greek the word is spelled with a pi. They include dyed threads, charms, talismans, the familiar Martis or March bracelet, and similar things. Let me explain more plainly. What are these dyed threads? It is well known that throughout March, from the first to the thirty-first, people put the so-called Martis bracelet on small children. I must tell you that I have found the word Martis written...
Well... Where did I find it? I must have seen it somewhere in an old book. It was written with an upsilon, although perhaps it ought to be written with an eta, from Martin or Martion. I say “perhaps,” because there may be some other reason for the upsilon—perhaps a root connected in some way with bearing witness. I have not researched it further, so I cannot tell you. Today, if we were writing it, we would use an eta. The custom is to take a white thread and a red thread, twist the two together into a little bracelet, and put it on a small child. This is called a periapton, and in the plural, periapta.
It is nothing other than an attempt to protect oneself from certain evils believed to be present at a particular time. March is considered harmful. Let me mention another period regarded as harmful, even though the entire year belongs to God. There are no harmful times, just as there are no evil hours. I mean the first six days of August, associated with what are called the Twelve Days. “Do not bathe during those first days,” people say, “because the Drymes will seize you.” The Greek word Drymes is also written with an upsilon. These are said to be nothing other than the nymphs of ancient times...
who are malevolent and come to harm people. I remember an uncle of ours who was lame. People would point to him and say, “Do you know why he became lame? He went swimming in the sea during the first six days of August. That is why he became lame. The Drymes harmed him.” And there are many other examples. These are amulets—that is, all the objects we carry on ourselves to protect us. The Greek terms contain the root alex, as in alexiterion. Alex means “to ward off.” It is the same root found in alexikeraunon, a lightning rod, and alexiptoton, a parachute, and so forth. It refers to something that wards danger off.
Thus an apotropaic object is something that wards evil off, as I told you—the root alex. Suppose you put on a hamaili or haimaili—both pronunciations are used, though haimaili is probably the correct one. It is a Turkish word meaning an amulet. Such things were also used in the time of Christ. The Evangelist says, “For they make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments,” and so forth. These amulets that people have... Who was it? Someone yesterday? A gentleman? Speak up so I can see you. Someone came to me and said, “I have found an amulet here on the road. What should I do with it?” “Throw it away,” I told him. You do not know what is inside it. And never accept an amulet...
unless you are one hundred percent certain that the person giving it to you is devout and has the fear of God. Be very careful, because it may contain the tiny bone of a bat or many other strange objects that people regard as protective charms.
If we are going to wear something that truly comes from our Church, then yes. But if people put something else inside, great care is needed. Do not be eager to ask, “Give me an amulet.” For us Christians, our principal and true protection is the Precious Cross. May no one among those listening to the Word of God fail to wear the Precious Cross.
Whether it is made of gold or silver, plastic or wood, makes no difference. What matters is that you believe, my brother, in Him who was crucified upon the Precious Cross. Then it will be your true protection. I do not know whether I have ever told you what happened during the German occupation. You know that Poland, that unfortunate nation, was divided between the Russians and the Germans during the Second World War. The Germans began the war by attacking the Poles mercilessly, while the Poles fought like lions. I have great affection for that people. The Germans attacked from the west, while the Russians came from the east, because they had made that unholy pact.
Stalin and Hitler had agreed to devour Poland. But Hitler, in his cunning, intended first to make this agreement and then to devour Russia as well. Instead, he brought about his own ruin, because sorcerers were advising him. Now listen carefully. Wherever the Russians advanced, the Poles fought back, and their officers were brave men. At one point, a Polish officer was captured, and a Russian soldier raised a pistol to shoot him. The officer unbuttoned his shirt and said, “Shoot.” Then the Russian saw the Cross upon his chest...
He lowered his pistol. The Pole repeated, “Shoot!” But the Russian said, “I cannot. The Cross you are wearing prevents me.” This showed, of course, that the Russian too must have been a believing Christian, or at least a Christian by tradition. So you see that the Precious Cross truly is our protection, provided that we believe in Him who was crucified upon it. Many cars display the Precious Cross, and many swimmers wear it around their necks, but only as an ornament. In that case the Precious Cross does not protect them. And then there is that other disgraceful sight in cars: the Precious Cross alongside a horseshoe and a blue bead. Please!
Out of ignorance, people display a horseshoe, a blue bead as a charm against the evil eye, or even garlic. I recently saw a plastic garlic bulb in a taxi. Yes, little by little we will have nothing but plastic garlic, because there will be no rain and real garlic will no longer grow. So you understand, my beloved, that you cannot have both one thing and the other. You cannot waver between the two. “How long will you limp on both knees?” the Prophet Elijah says to Ahab. You cannot limp toward one side and the other at the same time. You cannot; you simply cannot. Either you will put up...
garlic and braids of garlic, or you will put up the Precious Cross. That is all. One or the other. Thank you. One or the other. Let us continue, then, my beloved.
Saint Cyril says, “Or inscriptions on metal plates.” I want you to pay close attention to these “inscriptions on metal plates.” Since I discussed these subjects with you a very long time ago—this is the second time we have covered them—I had then consulted a remarkable work by Phaidon Koukoules. It consists of nine volumes and is entitled The Life and Civilization of the Byzantines. At the time I consulted a copy that did not belong to me. But just today I ordered and purchased the set. It is nine volumes. I ordered it, and while coming here in the car I was able to glance through it again and refresh my memory about a few things.
There are...
countless references and examples given by Koukoules, drawn not only from the Byzantines but also from modern Greece. Countless examples. The two subjects before us, as you will see, are these: inscriptions on metal plates, also called binding spells or curse tablets;
and impaling, or nailing. Those are the two. This is a very interesting subject. Koukoules devotes entire pages and sheets to these matters, and he even includes several drawings—two illustrations relating to the binding spells.
You will now see what these things are. They are dreadful.
They are strange inscriptions of the kind you must often have seen. Here, for example, are some writings—odd scrawls, like chicken scratches, from which you can make out nothing. And here are some more below. Do you see these? What are they? They are the sort of thing people obtain when they go to hodjas. What a disgrace for a Christian to go to Turkish sorcerers! There was once a Turkish sorcerer even here in Larissa. What a disgrace! Our Christians travel to Komotini, where there are Turks, to have these things done. They are even given a small booklet, wrapped up in some manner that I do not know.
They are told to carry it on themselves as an amulet. It may contain passages from the Quran or magical things of this kind—mere chicken scratches. Now, this is what is meant by inscriptions on metal plates. Koukoules says that these are sheets of metal. A petalon is a thin sheet of iron, a metal plate upon which something can be written. And as for what may be written there, he gives many examples. You would be appalled to learn what a sorcerer may write upon it. They cast binding spells upon married couples so that they cannot have children, so that they will die, or so that this or that evil will happen to them. Thus they write an inscription upon the metal sheet or plate. The tablets bear whatever words have been written upon them.
They take this object and place it beneath the threshold of the house, burying it so that it will not be found, or they hide it somewhere else. Because the person they wish to harm is named upon it, that person suffers harm. But there is another aspect to these “inscriptions on metal plates,” or binding spells, as the Byzantines called them. Since Koukoules speaks of small tablets or plaques, we should also note that such tablets may bear symbols or letters which people carry as amulets with a supposedly favorable, rather than malicious, purpose.
They carry them to be protected from certain things. Recently, however, I have noticed that jewelry shops sell small plaques engraved with one of the twelve signs of the zodiac. A godmother who is going to baptize a child supposedly gives such a thing as a baptismal gift. I do not know whether she also gives a Cross or not. But even if she gives both a Cross and a zodiac sign, I cannot understand how these things can possibly be combined. She finds out the month in which the child was born and chooses the corresponding piece of jewelry—a small gold plaque, as I said—engraved with the child’s zodiac sign, according to the month of birth. Do we not understand that this is magic? The child is being given the protection of a...
zodiac sign under which it was born—or rather, under whose influence it was supposedly born. It is incomprehensible. My beloved, never buy such jewelry and give it to a child. Give only the Cross, nothing else. Do you want to give other pieces of jewelry as well? You are free to do so, but they must not have a magical character. It grieves me deeply. There is scarcely a newspaper or magazine without a horoscope column. As soon as people pick up a newspaper or magazine, they hurry at once—more often women, but no less often men—to see what their zodiac sign says for that day. We could also say...
that the so-called blue beads are closely connected with the signs of the zodiac. One very common arrangement is a blue bead with a little ring at the top, so that it can be fastened to a child with a safety pin, and a small Cross hanging below it. The metal parts are often made of gold: the bead itself is ordinary glass, while the other parts are gold. Thus Christ and the Cross are combined with the blue bead, which belongs to the devil. “What accord has Christ with Belial?” says the Apostle Paul. What relationship can there be between Christ and the devil?
Do not put a blue bead on yourselves, on your children, on your cars, or anywhere else. Put up the Precious Cross. These, then, are the inscriptions on metal plates, the so-called binding spells or curse tablets. But I must tell you something else about this. Besides inscriptions on metal plates—that is, binding spells—there is something even more terrible. It is called impaling, or in our modern language, nailing. This too is very common in our own time, just as it was in the past. This is how it is done.
At a client’s request, a sorcerer who wishes to harm someone uses the method of sympathetic magic—affecting one thing through another that represents it. In other words, he makes a crude little figurine, a doll. This doll may be made of cloth.
It may be very roughly made; that does not matter. It may also be made of wax and shaped by hand. In any case, it is a little figurine. If it resembles the victim they intend to bewitch, so much the better. But if it does not resemble the victim, then the figurine or doll must have attached to it...
something belonging to the victim, taken either from the victim’s body or from the victim’s clothing: a small scrap from a garment, a suit, or some other piece of clothing, or even a single hair from the head. Then that demonic—terribly demonic—ritual of impaling begins. The sorcerer chants and chants, then takes needles, pins, or small nails and begins driving them into the doll’s head, so that the victim will suffer headaches or go mad; into the joints, the hands, the feet, the stomach, the back—everywhere. He drives in nail after nail after nail.
He goes on uttering curse after curse against the victim, whom of course he cannot have there in front of him. But he has the victim’s likeness, and he acts on the principle of sympathetic magic: whatever I do to this doll will pass to the victim, to the actual person. To help you understand what is meant by “pass”—though of course this is not sympathetic magic—when I venerate an icon of Christ, I do not venerate the wood, the paint, or the workmanship; I venerate Christ. I do not have Christ visibly before me, but I do have His icon. Then, as Saint John of Damascus says, the honor and veneration pass to the prototype. Through the antitype, they pass to the prototype.
We might say that what happens here is analogous, but its intent is malicious. The magician says, “May this or that happen to so-and-so; may he never see a happy day; may he even die.” It then passes through the antitype to the prototype. You may ask, “How does it pass? How could such a thing possibly be transmitted?” It happens in the following way, my dear friends: the demons carry it over. They have ways of inflicting harm on the person against whom the act of magic is performed, when that person is not living a spiritual life. When he too is a captive of Satan, God then permits it.
The person suffers harm. He was baptized, but he did not preserve the seal of Baptism. Saint Cyril will speak about this a little later. “Take care,” he says. “Take care not to return to these things, because the devil will come against you with even greater bitterness, brutality, and tyranny.” So beware! The other person may indeed suffer harm because he too is not living a spiritual life. Then you will ask me, “Are spells real?” Yes, they are real—in the sense that they can actually work and correspond to something real. Unfortunately, yes. A little later we shall see the single word Saint Cyril uses for all these practices:
he calls them “evil arts”—malicious arts. One of the petitions I include in my prayers is this, and I mention it to you so that, if you wish, you too may include it: that the Lord may preserve us from evil arts, from some plot of the enemy that could bring harm upon us. Let us therefore ask the Lord to protect us, because we do not know what someone might feed us or give us to drink. Something has just come to mind. You will have heard that when a woman wants to ensnare a prospective husband, she may put some of her menstrual blood into his coffee. You know about these things. Of course, you may say, “Then in the end we should never drink coffee anywhere!” Well, what can I tell you? How should I know? I am only telling you what people do. That is all I am telling you—what happens. May God protect us. Now suppose this love potion worked—the Greek word for such a potion comes from the verb meaning “to love,” not from the word for filtering. Suppose, then, that this magical act and demonic influence worked. The man fell in love with the woman and married her.
The devil is a worker of evil. Do you think he will preserve peace and love within that marriage? Poor girl, you will pay for what you have done, and you will pay through the very husband whom you deceived. He will treat you badly. What an achievement! And then, if you have learned these evil arts, you will go from bad to worse. Yes, there are many other practices: how to reconcile your husband to yourself by using Holy Chrism stolen from the Church, so that he will become peaceful, and many, many other things. My dear friends, all of this is dreadful. That is why Saint Cyril lists: “Omen-reading, divination, the interpretation of chance utterances, amulets,”
“inscriptions on metal plates, sorcery, or any other evil arts.” He includes sorcery as well. Whatever the magician accomplishes, he accomplishes through the influence of the devil. Saint Cyril says that these and every other such evil art are “worship of the devil.” If you engage in them, you are worshipping the devil. “Flee, therefore, from these things.” Keep far away from them. I will explain why and in what sense they constitute worship. Indeed, if you will accept it, this is the foremost of the great sins. There is no sin greater than worshipping the devil. Even murder pales beside
the sin of worshipping Satan. How can that be? Have you ever heard such a thing? The first commandment of the Decalogue says, “You shall love the Lord your God,” and so forth, and, “Him alone shall you worship.” Him alone! What a fearful commandment: you shall worship Him alone. Therefore, if you turn aside and worship the devil through these practices, you are no longer worshipping God. To begin with, the devil is a creature; so you are worshipping something created, and therefore you are an idolater. The first commandment comes first, not second, and it concerns the worship of God. This means that you have turned your back on God and turned toward the devil. And what follows when you break the first commandment, which comes first—and I have said “first” twice precisely because it is first? It is a sin against God. In the language of Holy Scripture, sin against God is called impiety. Anything that concerns God and that you transgress is called impiety. What concerns your neighbor is called sin. Thus, whatever you do against another person—whether you kill him, rob him, or slander him—you have committed a sin. But when you break the first four commandments, which concern your relationship with God, that is called impiety.
So let us take care, my dear friends. I have shown you that when we resort to these things, we commit a very great sin: the sin of impiety. Saint Cyril now explains: “For if, after renouncing Satan and entering into union with Christ, you fall under the power of these things, you will experience the tyrant more bitterly.” After entering into union with Christ, you will experience the devil as more bitter, because you left and abandoned him and joined yourself to Christ; but now you turn back, abandon Christ, and return to the devil, your former master.
You will discover how dreadful your former master is: “You will experience the tyrant as more brutal—perhaps because in the past he treated you as one of his own and relaxed the bitterness of your slavery, but now he has been deeply embittered by your conduct. You will be deprived of Christ, and you will experience Satan’s malice.” In other words, through Baptism you leave Satan’s dominion, but then you return through your sins—for these, as we said, belong to the devil’s pomp and are the works of the devil. Forgive me—
you return to the devil. What will the devil do to you then? This is why, my dear friends, I would say that we have many people who are demon-possessed. We could hardly imagine that someone who has been baptized could become demon-possessed during his life. It should be unthinkable. And yet people do become demon-possessed because they return to their former master. Let us continue: “Have you not heard the ancient story that tells us about Lot and his daughters? Was he not saved together with his daughters because he reached the mountain, while his wife became a pillar of salt?”
“She was made a pillar forever, preserving the memory of her evil choice and her turning back. Therefore, take heed to yourself and do not turn back again,” and so forth. Saint Cyril recalls a story. Allow me to tell it a little more fully and simply, because it is very interesting. You know the story, but you may not know why events unfolded as they did. It is the story of Lot. Lot had a wife and two daughters. The two angels, the two men who had been among the three men welcomed by Abraham, came down from the heights, because Abraham lived on a plateau.
That plateau is where Jerusalem stands today, and they descended from there. Where did they go? Down the slope toward the Dead Sea. At that time it was not yet the Dead Sea. It was a magnificent lake, and the surrounding region was fertile. On the western side of the lake was a group of five cities, a Pentapolis. The two most important were Sodom and Gomorrah, but there were five altogether. One of them was Zoar, and so forth. Lot chose to go there. Because the herdsmen tending their flocks had been quarreling, Abraham asked him, “My dear man, my child, where do you want to go?” Lot replied, “I will go there.” He showed a little greed in his choice, and in the end Lot was chastened for it.
Abraham remained on the plateau, while Lot went down and became a resident of Sodom. Because Lot was a devout man, he saw that sin was overflowing there. Do you know what sin? Homosexuality. Take note of this. As the New Testament tells us, righteous Lot saw the lawlessness and groaned over it every day. What could he do? He was only one resident among them. Could he confront them? Do you not remember what happened? They nearly lynched him when they demanded that he hand over the two men so that they could sin with them. When those visitors arrived and the Sodomites demanded the two young men for that purpose, the angels told Lot, “The city will be destroyed.”
The whole Pentapolis would be destroyed. “So gather your family. Before dawn, you must leave the city.” The two angels would lead them out. You should know that these two men are types of the second Person of the Holy Trinity and the third Person of the Holy Trinity. I explained this to you once before, and you may remember it: the two Persons descend into the world. The region of Sodom and Gomorrah was geographically low, and so it is a type of the world. By contrast, the mountain and plateau where Abraham lived are a type of Heaven. One of the three remained—the Father remains—and He sends the other two, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This signifies the divine economy of the Son, who becomes man, and the divine economy of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit remains in the Church. I have explained these things to you before; you may remember them. When they were about to leave, the two angels told Lot that they would be saved on the following conditions. They said, “You must not remain in the city or even in its outskirts. Escape to the mountain and be saved.” These are three statements, but they form a single condition expressed in three parts. You must not remain within the city, because there is no salvation in the city. You must not remain in its outskirts, because there is no salvation there either. You will be saved on the mountain. There was a mountain opposite them. “There you will be saved. Go there, and you will be saved.” That was the first condition. The second was: “Do not turn back to look behind you.”
The people were trembling. Who would not tremble under such circumstances? They panicked, became disoriented, and froze, unable even to set out. So the two angels took them by the hands, and all four were led outside. They left the city before dawn and traveled some distance. At one point Lot’s wife, whose name is not given, turned back and became a pillar of salt. She remained there, while the others continued onward. Allow me here to offer a beautiful symbolism, one also given by the Fathers.
Saint Cyril himself, as you will see, mentions it a little later, though only in a brief phrase. Eugenios Voulgaris develops it beautifully. He belongs to more recent times and is one of the Teachers of the Nation. Referring to certain passages of the Old Testament, Eugenios Voulgaris says: “The city is sin. The outskirts of the city are the causes of sin.” Therefore, just as there is no salvation in the city—that is, in sin—there is likewise no salvation in its outskirts, meaning the causes that lead to sin. If you engage in fornication, you will not be saved. If you watch a pornographic film on television or at the cinema, you likewise will not be saved.
That is the outskirts of sin: the causes that lead to sin. But “escape to the mountain and be saved.” As Eugenios Voulgaris says there, and Saint Cyril says here, the mountain is Jesus Christ. Go to the mountain, which is Christ. In other words, give yourself wholly to Christ. Do not turn back and look. I now come to the matter of Lot’s wife. Do not turn around to look at what you have left behind, because if you do, you will become a pillar of salt. Here is how Saint Cyril expresses it.
“She was made a pillar forever, preserving the memory of her evil choice and her turning back.” To be made a pillar means to become a pillar, and “forever” means eternally. Notice the reference to her evil choice. The free choice of Lot’s wife was not renewed. As you know, we are baptized. You also know that salvation consists of two things: what God offers you and what you offer in return. God offers you all that He offers. What can you offer Him? Nothing but your free choice—that “I will,” and I will because I will.
That is free choice. I said it twice to show you that I am not being pulled by anything and no one is forcing me. I will because I will. Then my free choice is good. Saint Cyril also speaks of “the memory of turning back.” It is not enough to have a good free choice; you must also reject the memory and desire of returning. A person may have lived a sinful life without taking care. For this reason, the love of God has given us the Mystery of Holy Confession, which is a repeatable Baptism, though the first Baptism itself is not repeated. The love of God has given us this second Baptism as well: metanoia, repentance. But take care.
Do not keep alive the memory of turning back—that is, do not recall how you used to live and desire to return to it. This is the point, my dear friends: we must not want to turn back. This requires the greatest care. Do you know what the demons do to ascetics? And do you know what an ascetic is? Above all, an ascetic is someone who guards the grace of Baptism, especially in those days when people were baptized at a mature age. This is what it means to be an ascetic, and it burns the devil greatly. So the demons show ascetics, in their sleep, things from their former lives: delicious food and a comfortable home.
They show them such things, sometimes even in vivid visions, and even scenes of sexual immorality. Saint Arsenius, as you know, had not lived a sinful life, but he had lived at the imperial court; he was a courtier. Then one day he heard a voice say, “Arsenius, flee and be saved,” just as happened with Lot. And Saint Arsenius, that great ascetic, fled without ever wishing to look back again. Thus old images return to people: the “good life”—good, of course, only in quotation marks—that is, the sinful life. This is why people will often tell someone, “Listen carefully:
Make sure you do not meet the woman with whom you sinned.” “But why, Father? There is nothing between us anymore.” Do you hear what I am telling you? Do not see her. The Fathers even say—and believe this if you will—that you should not pray for the woman with whom you sinned. If she has died, you should not go to her grave to read the Trisagion memorial prayers over her, even if you are a priest, nor should you go there to pray. The Fathers say this. Even at the grave, an evil memory of the woman with whom you sinned may return. Is this an exaggeration? I believe that this was precisely the work of the Fathers in the Church and of the ascetics: to analyze human life in a way that today leaves us astonished.
Therefore, we must have humility and say, “If this is how things are, then I must be careful.” Old memories will drag me away, like dogs dragging down the victim they intend to devour. And because the demons are like dogs, I must do everything in my power never to turn back. Have you been baptized? Be watchful. If you have enjoyed God’s favor—if He has guarded you and you have never fallen into the many forms of sin—do not boast. Do not boast. Instead, when you become conscious of this, say, “My God, You have guarded me! I thank You. Continue to guard me.” But being human...
You have certain memories, and the world itself also presents you with images that awaken them. You walk down the street, pass a cinema, and see the pictures displayed outside. You open a newspaper to read the news and see other things instead, and so on. The world is corrupt. Flee far from these memories. Have you sinned? Do you carry old images within you? Flee from them by every possible means, so that you do not revive them. Then you will be saved upon the mountain, which is Jesus Christ. Good night.

μαζί με τα ζώδια συνδέονται και οι λεγόμενες μπλε χάντρες. Είναι πάρα πολύ συνηθισμένος ο σύνδεσμος ή η σύνθεση μπλε χάντρας, που από το πάνω μέρος έχει ένα χαλκαδάκι για να μπορείς αυτό να το βάλεις με μία παραμάνα στο παιδί και από το κάτω μέρος έχει ένα μικρό σταυρό. Πολλές φορές και αυτά, ως μέταλλο, να είναι χρυσό. Το άλλο να είναι χάντρα απλώς, το άλλο να είναι χρυσό. Συνδυάζεται ο Χριστός, ο Σταυρός, με την μπλε χάντρα, που είναι του διαβόλου. «Τις δε συμφώνησις Χριστώ προς Βελίαρ;» λέει ο Απόστολος Παύλος. Τι σχέση υπάρχει ανάμεσα στον Χριστό και στον διάβολο;
Στον διάβολο. Τι έχει να σου κάνει ο διάβολος; Γι' αυτό θα ήθελα να σας έλεγα, αγαπητοί μου, έχουμε πολλούς δαιμονισμένους. Δεν θα μπορούσε να νοηθεί άνθρωπος που βαπτίστηκε να δαιμονιστεί στη ζωή του. Δεν θα μπορούσε να νοηθεί. Κι όμως οι άνθρωποι δαιμονίζονται, επειδή ξαναγυρίζουν πίσω στο παλιό αφεντικό. Και προχωρούμε. Οὐκ ἤκουσας παλαιᾶς ἱστορίας τὰ περὶ τοῦ Λὼτ ἡμῖν καὶ τῶν τούτου θυγατέρων διηγουμένης; Οὐχὶ αὐτὸς μὲν ἐσώθη μετὰ τῶν θυγατέρων, ἐπειδὴ τὸ ὄρος κατείληφεν, ἡ δὲ τούτου γυνὴ στήλη γέγονεν ἁλός;
