Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s first Mystagogical Catechesis presents baptismal preparation as a renunciation of Satan, his works, his pomp, and his worship. Foods offered to idols or subjected to demonic invocations are distinguished from ordinary food and compared inversely with the sanctification of bread and wine in the Eucharist. The baptismal renunciation concludes by rejecting Satan’s worship, especially prayer before lifeless idols and every practice concealing demonic allegiance.

Still with Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, we are in his First Mystagogical Catechesis. So far, we have seen some of what he tells us about Baptism, and that a work of preparation took place before they proceeded to Baptism. One element of that preparation was the renunciation of Satan.

The words are: “I renounce you, Satan.” This, of course, is then explained further. After “I renounce you, Satan,” it says, “and all your works.” I renounce all your works as well. Then there is a further continuation and explanation, which we shall examine. According to Saint Cyril, the works of the devil are sin. He then says, “I renounce you, Satan.” The words “I renounce” are understood throughout, just as “I believe” is understood throughout the Nicene Creed.

The words “I believe” come at the beginning, but they are understood in every article of the Nicene Creed: “I believe in one Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church”; “I believe in eternal life.” “I believe” is understood each time. So it is here as well: “and all your pomp”—that is, I desire to turn away from all your pomp. I renounce all your pomp as well. And what is this pomp? Last time we said that it includes a mania for the theater, and Saint Cyril gives a brief explanation of that. Here, allow me to add something. We said that Carnival is also part of Satan’s pomp, especially when it involves disguises and masks.

And especially when these are monstrous, goat-like, terrifying, demonic faces—truly demonic faces. All this is indeed part of Satan’s pomp. If you ask why people so often disguise themselves with masks bearing the face of a goat, with goat horns and similar things, the answer is well known: the roots of Carnival are pagan and, more specifically, Bacchic. These things were practiced in the worship of Dionysus.

The god Dionysus is not a native Greek deity, but a Phrygian one. His worship was introduced into Greece. He was a lesser god of drunkenness, sexual indulgence, and so forth. I mention this because I do not know whether you were aware that, in the traditions of peoples and tribes throughout the whole world, the deities they worship often have this same appearance: a goat-like form with horns. The reason is simply that the devil appears to people in this form.

This is why, in the religious traditions of peoples everywhere, we find these misshapen and ugly forms: they are demonic. Why do they take this form? God permits it so that it may be evident that such deities could not come from the true God. So I tell you again: we find the same form everywhere—or, better, the same archetype. This archetype is fixed and unchanging, and it is the devil. Thus, in Carnival celebrations and disguises, many of the forms are monstrous and particularly goat-like. We then considered Saint Cyril’s words, “through the frenzied dancing of the actors.” But why should this not also include frenzied dancing in general—that is, wild dances, especially modern ones, in which people are seized by a frenzy? They leave the dance hall or the theater, where some group performing this kind of music has appeared, after smashing everything inside; then they go outside and smash everything there as well. This is a phenomenon never before seen in history.

After dancing and music, all these people become destroyers of the city. The first sign of this was that English group I mentioned to you, the Beatles. Their name means “the beetles,” if I am not mistaken—the beetles, the Beatles. Then we spoke about hunting.

But because the hour was already late, I did not have time to say more about hunting. So let us add something to complete the subject. Saint Cyril says that, in order to satisfy the belly—that is, out of gluttony and voracious appetite—many people go hunting.

Thank you.

Saint Cyril is speaking of these very wild beasts, bearing in mind, of course, the primitive means available in his time for killing, say, a wild boar or sometimes a buffalo, a wild buffalo. When these animals are wounded, they attack the hunter. And so, instead of satisfying his gluttonous desires, the man himself becomes food for those wild beasts. This is what we said last time. But I would like us to say something more, since we have seen that a faithful person has compassion for animals. He has compassion for animals. He never goes out to kill an animal. And I also told you that man...

Man is not naturally a meat-eater, but a plant-eater. Of course, God permitted the eating of meat after Noah’s Flood. Yet I do not mean to say that you may not eat meat and so forth. At the very least, however, we should not be people who rush off to hunt. And that is without even mentioning that we lose...

We often miss church because of it, and we may be injured or even killed while hunting. Sadly, there are many accidents among hunters. What I would like to add, which I did not tell you last time, is the ecological destruction. It is well known that a balance exists within nature—a balance...

Between the animal and plant kingdoms. The wolf is regarded as a dangerous animal. Yet when God created the wolf, He intended it to help maintain a balance. The same is true of the fox: each helps preserve the balance within nature. Suppose a region contained only plant-eating animals—deer, hares, and the like. Before long, its plant life would disappear, because there would be no animals to keep the number of herbivores in balance.

In this way the ecological balance is preserved, and with it the plant kingdom. Let me give you an example. I read about this many years ago. Once, when a family of English emigrants left England for Australia, they took all their belongings with them, including a flowerpot containing a cactus-like plant. The conditions this cactus found there were remarkable. It multiplied, escaped human control, and spread across vast areas covering thousands of acres.

The question of how to eradicate this plant became a serious problem. To give you an idea, it had become like couch grass spreading through cultivated fields. In their efforts, they discovered that in South Africa there was a tiny organism called the lac insect. Ah, yes! It is red in color. This small creature is a little bug, not a microbe—perhaps some kind of insect—and it is very fond of eating this plant. So they brought it to Australia and released it onto this extraordinary plant that had spread across thousands of acres.

In a short time, this little creature—the lac insect—ate its way through the whole expanse. Then, having nothing left to eat, it died as well. What do we see here? One organism overcame the other. But should one overcome the other to such a degree that both disappear? There must be a balance. The wolf is useful, because if the herbivorous animals on which it feeds multiply excessively, the vegetation will be stripped bare—that is, the flora. The fauna grows at the expense of the flora, and afterward the fauna—the...

Animals themselves—also disappear. There is, then, a balance within nature. My beloved, when hunting takes place—and you know how relentlessly certain animals are hunted, such as elephants and whales—consider the ecological damage that is done. Here in Greece, you see that our native wildlife has been devastated: the birds, the hares, and so forth. This brings destruction and imbalance into the whole creation. Holy Scripture... Perhaps I have said too much; perhaps I should not have told you so much. But I wanted to explain that, among the other evils connected with the subject of...

Another evil connected with hunting is the ecological harm it causes. For theological reasons as well, then, we would say that a devout person loves animals. He truly loves them. Last time I spoke to you of the hunter who takes advantage of bitter cold to kill birds. My dear fellow, it is as though a poor man came to your door fainting from the cold, and you killed him to take the five drachmas in his pocket. Who has ever heard of such a thing? If we did this to human beings, it would be regarded as horrifying. Why should it be different with animals? Should we exploit their suffering and kill them? No, my beloved, no.

That is what I wished to add on the subject of hunting. But Saint Cyril continues: “Flee also from horse racing, that spectacle which produces frenzy and brutalizes souls.” Avoid horse racing as well. If I translate the phrase simply as “the mad spectacle,” I do not translate it correctly, because that would suggest that the horse race itself is mad. That is not the meaning. We shall retain the idea of a frenzy-producing spectacle—a mania that creates mania. The madness is not found in the horse race itself, but in its spectators, those who watch...

They are the ones seized by this frenzy, not those riding the horses. Saint Cyril also says that this spectacle brutalizes souls. Horse racing, of course, still exists in our own time. Today it exists chiefly as a form of gambling, a game of chance. People bet on a horse—one person on this horse, another on that one—to see which will finish first. There is no need for me to describe the anguish involved. A man may wager his entire fortune on one horse and lose it, suffering agony until that horse crosses the finish line.

I do not want to dwell on horse racing, because horse racing was well known in those days, nor on bullfighting—which, Glory to God, we do not have here in Greece, for that too is a dreadful spectacle. Instead, I will turn to something else that has replaced horse racing and bullfighting and has truly proved to be a frenzy-inducing spectacle: football. Football. Now, some young boy—if his father really has been telling him not to go—will find the answer here. Is that not so? Very well. So pay attention, my dear ones, pay attention. Football began as a game. There was an inflated ball, and you kicked it.

It is well known that it originated in England. But there is also a story about the history of football—whether it is true or not, I cannot say—and it is horrifying. They say that sailors and others would kick around the severed heads of people who had been executed. They found it an enjoyable spectacle—or rather, an enjoyable pastime—to kick those heads around, and eventually we arrived at what we now call a ball. I do not know how much truth there is in this account of football’s history, though a gentleman here tells me that it is true. Yes, I have not investigated it any further. What I do know is that this game has spread to enormous proportions throughout the world, like couch grass across a field, like that plant in Australia which...

I told you about—that plant which spread and spread across Australia. Now, what is it that creates such frenzy in the spectators? I cannot tell you, because I am not among those who watch football. Indeed, I love football so much that, when I was a secondary-school student and we played a little football during physical education, I once scored a goal against my own team. What can I tell you? My classmates nearly gave me a beating. That is how much interest I took in it. It simply did not interest me. I do not know why; it did not interest me. I do not say this as either a virtue or a fault. It simply did not interest me—not that other games did not interest me.

They did, but this one does not. And what do I mean by that? Whether a particular game appeals to someone or not is not something that can be explained—just as one cannot explain why you like kataifi but not baklava. There is no answer. Why do I like kataifi and dislike baklava? In matters of taste, there is no ‘why.’ So why do people like football? Why does it appeal to them? What does it awaken? It seems to awaken strange things within the human person. That is how it appears. What does it awaken? Instinctive states; it awakens instincts. And frenzy arises once I take the side of one team. Because, you know, as long as I take no...

side in the game, nothing happens. I simply watch it. I support neither team. Nothing. Then no ugly instinct is born within the soul; it is not awakened. But from the moment I take the side of one team, that is where the passion and the frenzy begin. What can I say? This spectacle is frenzy-inducing; it creates frenzy. I need only tell you what takes place inside a stadium, at least in our own day: cries and shouting, and the destruction of everything.

Every time, we hear that Team A played Team B and that they left behind damage worth so many millions. One might ask, ‘Why, my dear ones?’ It produces a kind of amok. And do you know what amok means? It is something dreadful, something truly dreadful. In the same way, the horse races in Byzantium produced a kind of amok. The Nika riots—I do not remember enough to tell you more about them—were nothing but the fruit of this frenzy-inducing spectacle, even though the Hippodrome was also used for other purposes. In any case, they were its fruit. Need I mention hooliganism?

Hooligans. There we see sheer irrationality. One might say to them, ‘My lads, are you really beating the opposing supporters with chains? Someone will win and someone will lose—and now you are striking people with chains? You pick up stones and hurl them at the buses that brought people from another region, another place, to watch the football match.’ What rational explanation can you give for hooliganism? Is this, or is it not, a frenzy-inducing spectacle? Of course, I cannot imagine that any of the gentlemen who listen to the Word of God go to the stadium. I hope none of the ladies do either, because...

ladies too have become involved with the stadium. Indeed, we have now begun women’s football as well, and we have whatever comes with that. You see, women seek equality even in this. So be it. Before long, we shall see the results. But do you know what is of great value and importance, and why I insist on this so strongly? It is what Saint Cyril says here, and it is very characteristic: such a spectacle brutalizes the soul. ‘The frenzy-inducing spectacle that brutalizes souls.’ To brutalize means to make barbarous, coarse, and degraded. What becomes of my soul when I watch such a spectacle? Our young people in particular shout, swear, and blaspheme. Do not speak to me of courtesy there—as though you stepped on the person in front of you in the stands and said, ‘Forgive me; I was not paying attention and stepped on you slightly.’ Have you ever heard anyone there say, ‘Forgive me; I stepped on you a little’? I do not think so. I do not think so. Instead, we see our children and our people undergoing a brutalization of the soul. They speak barbarously. And now the destruction of language has come as well. Our language has become impoverished, and you can see...

that those who occupy themselves with such spectacles have an utterly impoverished and barbarous vocabulary. They speak loudly, gesticulate, and quarrel—not only while the football match is being played, but outside the stadium, in other places as well. And would you like to hear something worse? Those who occupy themselves with such spectacles acquire a shallow soul. I can never imagine a thinking person—and the human person is a thinking being, created to think—behaving in this way. As Pascal says, man is a reed, but a thinking reed. When I run after these things, I leave no room in my soul or in my nous, the spiritual intellect, to think about anything deeper. That is where the harm lies. We become shallow. Our interests become poor and superficial. We can no longer speak about theology, philosophy, or anything else. Could you imagine philosophical minds going to football matches? Could you ever imagine such a thing? It is impossible, impossible. The two do not belong together. Therefore, the point is that football does harm. I beg those of you who are listening: if you used to go, or still go, do not go again. Tell your children...

not to go. Avoid such spectacles. Here Saint Cyril, inspired by God, calls them the devil’s pomp. And what does he say? ‘For all these things are the pomp of the devil.’ All of them, he says, are the devil’s pomp.

We now come to the seventh paragraph. ‘But the things hung in idol temples and at pagan festivals—whether meat, loaves, or anything else of this kind—having been defiled by invocations of the utterly unclean demons, must also be reckoned among the devil’s pomp. For just as the bread and wine of the Eucharist, before the holy invocation of the worshipful Trinity, were ordinary bread and wine, but after the invocation the bread becomes the Body of Christ and the wine the Blood of Christ, so in the same way these foods belonging to Satan’s pomp, though ordinary by their own nature, become profane through the invocation of demons.’ In this seventh paragraph, Saint Cyril tells us that the pagans had a custom at their festivals of hanging meat or loaves before their idols. These things, he says, had been ‘defiled by invocations of the utterly unclean demons.’ Through an invocation, they became polluted and unclean. These too, he says, must likewise be numbered...

‘among the devil’s pomp.’ They must be reckoned among the devil’s pomp. You see that he is continuing the subject of the devil’s pomp. What exactly are these things? Pay close attention here, because he makes a very important point. They would hang up this meat and these loaves. Sadly, many pagan practices survived, and at the end Saint Cyril will tell those who have been baptized, those who have been illumined, that they must no longer do any of these things. This was, of course, a form of sacrifice at pagan festivals. But now that you have been baptized, you must not do these things. They are not right.

A little further on he gives a very interesting explanation. What are these practices? I fear that the well-known kourbani, which has survived in our own Christian festivals, may belong to this category—though I retain some reservation on this point. Every year I used to attend the festival—the feast, of course—of a village in our region. The church was dedicated to Saint Athanasios. Every year they slaughtered a bull there and boiled its meat. Indeed, they slaughtered the animal behind the sanctuary and then distributed the meat to the people.

It is said that one year a churchwarden insisted that this not be done, perhaps because they did not have the money for it. Then, in his sleep, he was given a severe beating, and from that time onward he said it must be done. They say Saint Athanasios beat him. I am afraid; I am afraid. I have reservations—serious reservations—that this is truly what happened. Kourbani: that is what we call it. It is a Turkish word. There is also the term Kurban Bayram. Bayram—we say ‘bayram’ as well. It means the Passover of the Jews—of the Muslims, rather. You may have heard people say that they are celebrating their bayram. So, in Turkish, Kurban Bayram means... Thank you.

a sacrifice, chiefly of a lamb, at the feast of Bayram—that is, at this Muslim Passover. You may say that we too have the sheep, the lamb, at our own Christian Pascha. But that has no form of idolatry. Indeed, it is now understood to have no liturgical or worshipful significance whatsoever. Whether you slaughter a sheep or not makes no difference. It has simply remained as a custom. It comes from the Jews, who slaughtered the sheep in Solomon’s Temple, at the altar. The priests slaughtered it, and the head of the household took it home to prepare it in the prescribed ritual manner.

In a ritual manner: no bone was to be broken; they were to eat it by morning; and whatever was not eaten during the night—whatever meat remained—had to be burned. It could not be eaten the next day. It had a liturgical character. So, although this custom is of course unrelated to idolatry, I fear—judging at least from the terminology we mentioned, kourbani and so forth—that it may derive from a pagan animal sacrifice. I will mention just one example. It is well known that the Anastenaria in Chalkidiki, before performing their familiar act of walking barefoot over burning coals—and after preparing themselves for many days—...

slaughter a bull behind the church on the preceding day. Sadly, even the priest consents to this slaughter, and so on. Then, when they step onto the burning coals, they carry the icon of Saint Constantine and Saint Helen, because this takes place on May 21. Yet if you read about the slaughter of this bull and the entire procedure, you will see that it is a pagan ritual. For this reason, the Metropolitan of the region has acted very properly—this has been going on for many years—by continuing each year to...

issue an encyclical forbidding these things. Unfortunately, however, there is a Beast called tourism. To preserve tourism, maintain the flow of visitors, and make money, we overlook these corrupt traditions, which are pagan. So I suspect that when Saint Cyril speaks here of meat or loaves being hung before idols at pagan festivals, this is the sort of thing he means. I say again that this is my suspicion. But the point of real importance and value in this paragraph is something else. He says that before the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ, they are...

ordinary products—that is, plain wine and plain bread. But through the prayer—which prayer?—of the Divine Liturgy, the bread is changed into the Body of Christ and the wine into the Blood of Christ. By analogy, Saint Cyril now says that things over which demonic invocations have been pronounced become profane and defiled because they have been offered to demons, just as the former things were sanctified. The conclusion is this: you may have heard someone say, ‘Do not eat that piece of loukoumi, because incantations have been read over it.’ Read over it by whom? By some sorceress.

My dear ones, what can I tell you? What can I tell you? What can I tell you? People come upstairs and insist on bringing three bananas, or three pieces of loukoumi, or three sweets. Why three and not four or two? They insist upon it because incantations have been read over these things; they have been bewitched. Do you understand? This is widely known among our people: ‘Do not eat that, because incantations have been read over it’—that is, demonic invocations. I believe all of you have heard this.

Last year, or perhaps more than a year ago—do you see this box I have here? Inside it I have the transformer and rectifier that produce the familiar three volts needed to run the tape recorders. I had two of these. One was up here, and the other was behind that pillar, so that we could make two recordings: if one failed, the other would record. One day I opened it and found a cross made of wax inside. And this was real beeswax, not paraffin—very black wax, exceedingly black. It had been formed into a proper cross. Who could have put it there? Truly, when I saw it, I said, “What is this cross? Who put it in here? Who put it here?”

And so on. A woman may find a nail this large hidden inside the hem of her skirt. How did that nail get in there? Who put it there, and when did they have the opportunity to do it? And so on. The objects they place there have had incantations read over them, and this happens especially with food. What more can I say, except that this is a reality: just as ordinary wine and bread are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ, so ordinary food, when demonic incantations are read over it, becomes something dangerous. This is what Saint Cyril says here.

The eighth paragraph. I do not want you to be terrified, because when someone makes the sign of the Cross over such a thing, he should not be afraid—do not be afraid. And when a person lives the Christian life, nothing will happen to him. Do not be terrified. But you should know what goes on, what kinds of people exist, and what they do. The eighth paragraph: “After this you say, ‘And all your worship.’” So, after saying, “I renounce you, Satan,” and then, “and all your works,” and “all your pomp,” he then says, “and all your worship.” What, then, is this worship of Satan? “The worship of the devil is prayer offered in temples of idols, and those things done in honor of lifeless idols.”

He then gives examples. What is the worship of Satan? It is to stand before idols and offer prayers to them—things “done in honor” of lifeless idols. But do not forget that this is why Christ came into the world: to deliver us from idols. Behind the idols lies the worship of Satan, and Christ came precisely to deliver us from the worship of Satan. Let me remind you of one incident—or perhaps two or three. How can one say that demons are behind the idols? I will mention an event recorded in Holy Scripture. It is well known that the Ark of God, the Ark of the Covenant, was once captured by the Philistines. The Israelites were at war with the Philistines, and the Israelites were not living a spiritual life. The sons of Eli the high priest took the Ark with them to the battlefront. But they did not truly believe, just as many people wear a cross without believing in Him who was crucified upon the Cross. In that case, the cross is of no benefit to you. In the same way, they were not living the life God desired. Holy Scripture describes the sinful lives of Eli’s sons and of many Israelites, and God permitted the Ark to be captured by the Philistines.

Naturally, the people grieved over this loss. But when the Philistines placed the Ark inside the temple of their god Dagon—Dagon. Let me make a brief aside. One of the fifty-two playing cards is dedicated to the god Dagon. So, those of you who play cards should know this. Dagon was to the Philistines what Zeus was to us Greeks. Into this temple of Dagon, then, they brought the Ark of God as a trophy won in battle. They set it off to one side as a trophy. It is well known that the Israelites also often did this with spoils of war, dedicating them as offerings.

Spoils of war. They would dedicate what they had taken in battle. When the Philistines went in the next morning, they found the statue of Dagon lying face down. It had fallen from its pedestal, with its head pointing toward the Ark. Of course, a statue can fall because of an earthquake. It is only a statue. So they set it up again. The next day the statue had fallen once more, but this time its head and hands had broken off and were shattered. Fear and terror seized them, because they had heard how fearsome the God of Israel was. They had heard how the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, how the Egyptians were drowned, and so on. The God of Israel was fearsome, while Dagon, their god...

And Dagon was shattered, because in the presence of God the devil is crushed. What other example could I give you? Shall I tell you about Daniel, or about Saint Panteleimon? Shall I take an example from the lives of the Saints, where a Saint approached the idols and the idols began to cry out? The idols? Can marble cry out? It was the demons dwelling within the idols, and worshiped through them, that cried out. We have many such incidents in the lives of our Saints. So let us understand this: behind the idols stands the devil, just as the devil stands behind magic. He is the one at work. What, then, does Saint Cyril say the worship of Satan is?

Prayer before idols—“prayer offered in temples of idols.” How is this worship expressed? It is well known that practitioners of magic use a ritual book popularly called the Solomonic. Let me explain what “the Solomonic” means. Solomon certainly did not write this book of magic with its magical formulas. Without question, it was written much later. But from ancient times there was a custom of attributing a work to some renowned person. An obscure author would write a book and place a famous person’s name on it so that the book would circulate. In this way, practitioners of magic attributed magical powers to Solomon.

They claimed that he had written these things and that this was a book of secrets which they guarded, calling it the Solomonic. These writings are falsely attributed; there is not a trace of truth in any of these claims. You should know that. The Solomonic, then, is nothing more than a book containing magical formulas, invocations, and incantations. When such incantations are spoken—as in a spell or in the ritual for removing the evil eye, where you recite various formulas—people often do not understand what the words actually mean. In essence, this is the worship of Satan. The devil may even drive himself away for you, only to draw you into this cycle and trap you.

His purpose is to make you worship him and place your faith in him. God has permitted you to fall under a spirit of delusion, believing that the devil heals, so that you will worship him and remain caught in the practice of removing the evil eye. After saying these things, Saint Cyril gives us examples. He mentions “the lighting of lamps.” I do not know whether this practice still exists. A little later you will see that he speaks of lighting lamps, or burning incense beside springs or rivers.

People go to bodies of water, light candles or lamps there, and burn incense. Why? “Some, deceived by dreams or by demons, believed that by doing this they would awaken and find healing from bodily ailments.” Whether through dreams or through deceptions of demons, through visions and who knows what else, they are told that in this way they can be healed of an illness. Let me mention some modern examples. They say that when the moon is waning, immediately after the full moon—not while it is waxing, because if the moon is waxing and you have pimples, you will become covered with them—but while it is waning, your pimples will disappear. You see here the principle of sympathetic magic, in which like is believed to affect like. So pay attention. They tell you to stand at a crossroads, draw a circle, and recite certain words there. This is supposed to cure the warts people get on their hands, those hard little growths. We call them warts; I do not know what you call them—perhaps derveritses. They tell you that, to make these things disappear, you must perform this ritual.

They go out at night with candles and incense to do these things. Practitioners of magic will even advise that afterward—listen, listen to the wickedness of the demons—a Divine Liturgy should be celebrated after midnight. Once, when I was very young, only seven or eight years old, my family and I were returning late from somewhere in my father’s village, and there were lights in the church. My father said, “Ah, they are celebrating a secret Liturgy for such-and-such a child.” I still remember the child’s name to this day. Because the child was showing certain nervous symptoms, they wanted him to become well.

It was a nighttime Liturgy, after midnight, celebrated for that purpose. Whenever someone—a practitioner of magic—tells you to have three Liturgies celebrated, ask why three rather than two or four; or seven Paraklesis services, or forty Paraklesis services, or whatever else, you should immediately become suspicious. You can see that this is magical counsel. They even use religious symbols and rites to make certain of achieving their purpose. As Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain says, the worst form of magic is when they mix their satanic practices and contrivances with religious things.

So we must also be watchful about this. Someone may say to you, “But I was trying to do something good, so that my child might recover.” Yet if the devil makes your child well—and he may be able to do so—he has gained the child’s soul. This recalls that well-known poem by Goethe. You remember Mephistopheles: the young man sold his soul in order to become young again. So take care, my beloved, because in this way we worship the devil without knowing where such worship will lead us. And what does Saint Cyril say? “Do not take part in such things.” Do not engage in practices of this kind.

“Do not take part in such things.” Saint Cyril continues: “The observation of omens, divination, auguries, amulets, inscriptions on metal plates, magic, any other wicked arts, and all such things are worship of the devil.” But we need to examine these matters a little more carefully. Let us consider them in the following way. Notice what he says here: the observation of omens. What does that mean? It means watching for omens. We speak of a good omen. It is well known that the ancient Greeks practiced the observation of omens—good omens and bad omens.

A good sign or a bad sign. It is divination based chiefly on the flight of birds—on the way birds fly. One form of observing omens has its own particular name: cloud divination. This concerns the way clouds move and the shapes they form. Of course, clouds do have recognizable features that help us interpret the weather. If we have dark, rain-bearing clouds, there will be a storm; or we may see those clouds that look like little sheep in the sky. These are signs that can be interpreted.

Meteorology studies such things and tells us that the weather will be fair, and so on. But they are also studied by a false kind of meteorology, namely the observation of omens—not to determine whether it will rain, but whether there will be a war. I remember that on August 14, 1940, the eve of the feast, during Vespers for the Most Holy Theotokos, the Northern Lights reached as far as Greece. This is exceedingly rare. I believe I have mentioned it to you before. The Northern Lights appeared. I will not explain in detail what they are and how they occur. They look like a cloud, but they are not a cloud. They are electrically charged ions forming various shapes. In any case, the Northern Lights reached Greece and faded somewhere over Crete. The conclusion people drew was that there would be war. It was a coincidence: war was declared on October 28. Then came the second conclusion: “You see? The Northern Lights reached us. It was a sign that war was coming.” In this way, people also draw conclusions from the flight of birds and from their cries. An owl hoots. When the father of Father Paul Barbayannis died, an owl came and hooted at the window shortly before his death.

Now look what happens: if someone is superstitious or watches for omens, he will conclude from that cry that someone is going to die. My beloved, we have many owls, and these good birds are extremely useful. They eat mice—have you forgotten that? Along with bats and other nocturnal creatures, they gather up and clear away all sorts of pests. What swallows do during the day, bats and owls do at night. Why should we say that when an owl hoots, someone will die—or when a dog howls, or whatever else? These are superstitions. Or consider the examination of animals’ entrails. People examine animals, especially sheep, though they may also use other animals—even the breastbone underneath a chicken—to see what shadows appear there and what they foretell about the future: death, happiness, or something else.

Saint Cyril says: leave these things behind. You have been baptized, and you cannot engage in such practices. My beloved, since there are still other matters to discuss, God willing, we shall speak about them next Monday.

Κάθε φορά ακούμε: έπαιξε η Α με τη Β ομάδα και άφησαν πίσω τους μια καταστροφή τόσων εκατομμυρίων. Θα έλεγε κανείς, γιατί, αγαπητοί μου; Γεννάει ένα αμόκ. Και ξέρετε τι θα πει αμόκ; Είναι κάτι φοβερό, είναι κάτι φοβερό. Όπως τότε οι ιπποδρομίες στο Βυζάντιο γεννούσαν ένα αμόκ. Οι στάσεις του Νίκα, δεν θυμάμαι πιο πολλά πάνω σε αυτό να σας πω, δεν ήταν παρά αυτός ο καρπός, παρότι βέβαια χρησιμοποιήθηκε ο ιππόδρομος, τέλος πάντων, ο καρπός αυτού του εμμανές θεάματος. Να πω διά των χουλιγκανισμών;

Και κομματιάστηκε, γιατί μπροστά στην παρουσία του Θεού ο διάβολος συντρίβεται. Τι άλλο παράδειγμα να σας πω; Να σας πω του Δανιήλ περίπτωση, να σας πω του Αγίου Παντελεήμονος περίπτωση, να πάρω από το Αγιολόγιο, που πήγε στα είδωλα και τα είδωλα άρχισαν να φωνάζουνε. Τα είδωλα; Το μάρμαρο φωνάζει; Οι δαίμονες που ήσαν μέσα στα είδωλα και ελατρεύοντο διά των ειδώλων εφώναζαν. Έχουμε τέτοια περιστατικά στους βίους των Αγίων μας, όχι ολίγα. Θα το ξέρουμε, λοιπόν: πίσω από τα είδωλα είναι ο διάβολος, όπως και πίσω από τη μαγεία είναι ο διάβολος. Αυτός ενεργεί. Λοιπόν, τι είναι, λέγει εδώ τώρα, η λατρεία του σατανά;
