Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that baptism begins with exorcisms, the renunciation of Satan, and the confession of faith through the Creed. The baptismal promises are recorded before God, making anyone who knowingly returns to sinful deeds and thoughts accountable as a transgressor. Saint Cyril’s warning about decadent theater is applied to modern obsessions with cinema and television, while a distinction is maintained between morally instructive art and entertainment that damages the soul.

My beloved, we are now in the first Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, which concerns Divine Baptism. As I remind you, last time we had already discussed...

Last time we discussed what we might call the preliminaries of Baptism. Since the place where the Mystery of Baptism was celebrated was divided into two sections, we said that in the first section, which he calls the forecourt, the preliminary rites took place: chiefly the exorcisms, the renunciation of Satan, and the confession of faith through the recitation of the Creed. You will remember that we had reached the words, “I renounce.”

“I renounce.” “I renounce Satan.” I renounce you, Satan—you, the evil one—and so forth. This “I renounce” means: I am no longer under your dominion. I have left your ranks. I am no longer subject to you. I do not want you as my master. So be gone! I renounce you; I am leaving you. We had examined at some length what “I renounce” means, because man had been a slave of Satan. You know that when our first ancestors in Paradise accepted Satan’s counsel, God...

...drove them out of Paradise. What does this mean? It means that they themselves, of their own free will and by their own choice, became servants of Satan—Satan’s possession. And because creation was made for man, when man entered Satan’s service and became his possession, creation also fell under Satan’s sway. It likewise became his possession; that is, it came under demonic domination. For this reason, besides the exorcisms pronounced over the person during the preliminary rites of Baptism...

...there is also an exorcism prayer over the water in which the person is to be baptized, because the water is regarded as being under demonic domination. Of course, somewhere in his catecheses, Saint Cyril says, “Does the devil truly possess anything?” He possesses nothing. He was merely permitted to hold it. When he said, “I will give You the kingdoms of the earth, Lord,” were they really his? Is money his? If you remember, long ago we heard Saint Cyril say to the devil, “Not even a single obol belongs to you.” Then what does this mean? Simply that permission was given, because man...

...willingly gave himself over to Satan and became Satan’s possession—willingly. Now, therefore, he leaves Satan’s dominion by confessing, “I renounce you, Satan.” Yes: “I renounce you, Satan. I do not want you.” After “I renounce” comes a series of further renunciations. This series is of the utmost importance, and we must learn it, so that by renouncing not only Satan but also everything that accompanies him and helps him gain dominion over us...

...we may not go back or return to him. The first consequence of this renunciation, says paragraph five of the First Mystagogical Catechesis—page 248, for those who have the book, verse 24—is this: “Now, in the second phrase, you learn to say: ‘And all your works.’” Thus, after renouncing the person of Satan...

Um...

...you then declare, “And all your works.” You say, “I renounce you and all your works.”

What are the works of Satan? Saint Cyril says, “Every sin is a work of Satan.” Every sin is Satan’s work. “It is necessary to renounce sin as well, just as one who escapes a tyrant must certainly also escape his weapons.” You must flee from his works—from sin—just as, when fleeing a tyrant, you also flee from his weapons. Do you see? You flee from his weapons too. His weapons must not reach you. “Every particular kind of sin, therefore, is numbered among the works of the devil,” because every kind of sin is counted among the devil’s works. Thus, whenever I commit a sin, the devil has already caught up with me. He has caught me. This is perfectly natural, my beloved. That is why my guardian angel departs from me, and why, in the end, I no longer have God’s protection. Now, God’s love may sometimes still reach me because He sees that I may yet repent, and because He loves me. Although through sin I fall once again into Satan’s hands, God may still guard me; this belongs to His love. But under ordinary circumstances, we would say...

...can I still have God’s protection when I return to what is called sin, which is the work—or the works—of Satan? Do you see, then? “Every particular kind of sin.” For this reason, when we make our confession—and let me tell you this as well, so that you may know—we must confess our sins according to their kind. There are two ways of confessing: in general terms and in specific terms, according to kind. What does this mean? When I tell my spiritual father that I am a sinner, that is an extremely general confession: “Father, I am a sinner.”

“I will give you the prayer of absolution now, and that is the end of it.” But in what way are you a sinner? We must therefore state, acknowledge, and confess each sin according to its kind: I did this, that, and the other. Of course, when a particular sin has been repeated many times, we cannot recount every occasion on which it occurred. Take lying, for example. Between one confession and the next, we may have told five hundred lies or a thousand lies. Must we recount them all? No. In such a case, we say that we have told a thousand lies. But then...

...must we describe every lie in confession? We would need a thousand hours for our confession, because we would sit there narrating every single case: this happened, then that, then something else. What should we say instead? “I have told lies.” What should I add?

“I have lied many times. I have a habit of lying very often. I tell more lies than truths.” That alone is what we should say. If we reach a thousand lies—and count how many lies we tell in a single day, then consider what happens if we confess only every six months because we delay, because we have no...

...order or discipline in our spiritual growth—you will see whether we reach or greatly exceed a thousand lies. So we should mention only one, two, or three instances in which our lie caused serious harm, injustice, or something else of that kind. Among the many lies we have told, we should relate the one, two, or three that created a problem or a difficult situation. Thus, in confession we use both general and specific statements. We speak generally about a pattern, and specifically about certain instances. For if we speak only in general terms, my beloved, how will the spiritual father identify...

...the problem and know what answer to give us? How could he? If we speak only generally, the spiritual father cannot identify the matter. He does not understand and does not know what is wrong, while we remain unhealed and receive no help, and so we suffer harm. On the other hand, if we recount every last detail of everything we confess, in the way I described earlier, we fall into endless chatter. We would then have to rent the spiritual father for ourselves for several days and afterward release him so that the next person could rent him. What I mean is that we must preserve a proper balance between general and specific confession. In any event, our sins must...

...be named according to their kind. You cannot simply say, “I have fallen into immorality.” What sort of immorality? Immorality includes masturbation, fornication, sins against nature, adultery, bestiality, and incest. So you cannot merely say, “I have fallen into immorality.” That could mean many things. You must name your sin according to its kind. And if you say, “I sinned with one of my relatives,” which is incest, the spiritual father will take particular measures to help you prevent that sin from happening again, and so forth. The element of time is likewise important. Did something happen...

...long ago, perhaps in my childhood or adolescence, while today I am middle-aged or elderly? Or did it happen recently? I must make that clear as well. If I begin describing sins from my youth when I am now seventy-five years old, the spiritual father may be alarmed and ask, “When did these things happen—yesterday, the day before yesterday, last month? When?” “Oh, when I was an adolescent.” We must specify the time: when I was an adolescent, a young man, or a soldier, I did this, that, and the other. You see, then, that our confession must be clear. I repeat this because Saint Cyril gives us the occasion: we must state our sins in the way I have explained, just as he says here. In addition to this, he continues: “Know...”

“...that everything you say, especially at that most fearful hour, is recorded—it is recorded.” Know that whatever you say at that moment—which moment? The moment when you are about to be baptized—when you tell Satan that you renounce his authority and also his works, which are sins, take heed: this confession of yours is written down. How so? In a court of law, everything that is said is recorded by the clerk or stenographer, who keeps what are called the minutes of the trial. So a record is kept.

Saint Cyril says here that these things are written down. Where are they written? In God’s book. What book is that? It is the memory of God. There they are recorded. Therefore, if you break your covenant, violate your promise, rebel, and return to Satan, take heed: these things have been written down. Be careful what you confess. As you know, something similar takes place in Holy Matrimony. I believe I mentioned it to you once before. An ancient order of service shows this—for liturgical orders have often changed over the course of history. This happens in every area of the Mysteries, liturgical life, and so forth. It does no harm; many factors contribute to such changes.

The essence is never lost. The core remains what it is, and so forth. The bridegroom—excuse me, Holy Matrimony—was celebrated within the Divine Liturgy. Within the Divine Liturgy. That is why this Mystery of Holy Matrimony begins with the words, “Blessed is the Kingdom.” This too is a remnant, a vestige of the place the Mystery of Holy Matrimony once had. The couple were joined in Holy Matrimony, and the Mystery was celebrated, I believe, before the Gospel—that was where the wedding service took place. Then, at the end of the Divine Liturgy, the newlyweds received Holy Communion, just as those who were baptized received Holy Communion after their Baptism.

And there too we have the words, “Blessed is the Kingdom.” These two Mysteries were celebrated within the Divine Liturgy. Today we bring a little child, baptize the child, and then take the child to receive Holy Communion on the first Sunday. There is now an interval of time, whereas the newly baptized person used to receive Holy Communion immediately. Do you hear? Immediately. Now pay attention to this. The bridegroom stood before the icon of Christ, and the bride stood before the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, until the time came to celebrate the Mystery of Holy Matrimony. It was placed within the other Mystery, the Holy Eucharist, just as the Mystery of Holy Orders is also incorporated into it. Incorporated, but...

...at the same time—at least in the case of the Mystery of Holy Orders—inseparable from it. Holy Matrimony was taken out, and Baptism was taken out, but Holy Orders cannot be taken out. It is inseparable. So this order of service says—and these are old orders of service, dating from the eighteenth, fifteenth, and twelfth centuries, preserved in libraries today as manuscripts—the priest says: “Listen, bridegroom. At this moment, before the icon of Christ, you make a solemn and awesome confession that this woman here will be your wife, whom you must care for and love,” and so on. He says the same things to the bride concerning her husband.

He tells her that at this very moment angels are hearing her confession. In other words, it is being recorded. Think of that now; truly, think of it. If those entering Holy Matrimony knew all this and lived a life of piety, would we have divorces? Would we have quarrels and fighting? We would have none of these things, because people would be fully aware of what they were doing. See what Christianity offers. These things have been neglected and forgotten. That is why we must bring them out of the archives and offer them again. They are always fresh, always beautiful, always ready to renew people, to renew the faithful. What could be more beautiful, then, than to be told that...

...their confession—that he chooses her and she chooses him, and that each must care for the other—is being recorded? But I return to our subject. Saint Cyril continues: “But if you are caught doing anything contrary to these things, you will be judged as a transgressor.” Take care: if you are overcome in any of these matters—that is, if you fail to stand firm and do not do what you ought—you will be judged as a transgressor, because you are now making a confession. You are renouncing the works of Satan...

...“by which I mean irrational deeds and thoughts.” That is, you renounce the works of Satan—sin and all sins—but you also renounce every deed and every thought. Here “thoughts” means recollections and logismoi, intrusive thoughts. You must therefore become a new person. You will not repeat your wicked deeds. You may have been sexually immoral, an adulterer, a drunkard, or anything else. Whatever you may have been, you will not repeat it. And you will reject these things not only as deeds; you will not permit things to remain among your logismoi, your intrusive thoughts, that will bring about...

...your defeat and take possession of you. Saint Cyril uses a very striking phrase here: “and thoughts that arise irrationally”—that is, thoughts which are contrary to reason. Let me mention something in passing. You may already have obtained, or may yet obtain, that beautiful little book containing the Five Mystagogical Catecheses, published by Apostoliki Diakonia, which I mentioned to you previously, with a translation and so forth. The translation is certainly very beautiful and good—and, as we said, it is about two hundred years old. Yet a translation can never equal the value of seeing a text...

Never, ever. That is precisely why those who wish to experience, understand, and study a text learn its language and whatever else is necessary. For sometimes, my dear friends, a translator may render a single word incorrectly, or may translate it with a corresponding word in another language that does not possess the force of the original word in its context. Therefore, those of you who have some education should ask to see the original text as well. Very often the text itself will give you something especially powerful and valuable. This applies to those who are able to consult the text. So, “thoughts arising irrationally”—indeed...

Only—excuse me—sin, whether it takes the form of a deed, a logismos, an intrusive thought, or a desire, is something contrary to reason—contrary to the Logos. And you know that irrationality is found in the devil. It is one of the three elements that characterize him: irrationality, that which is contrary to reason. God has made nothing irrational. When we speak of what is rational, if we must define it, I do not know exactly what definition we could give. I do not know whether the rational can truly be defined. Any definition would really be a description. Do you know how we might express it approximately? It is that which accords with everyone’s understanding and consistently occurs in the same way.

It is that which accords with everyone’s understanding and consistently occurs in the same way. Thus, within a group of people, when someone does something different from what we are accustomed to seeing and understanding, we call it irrational. So there is no precise definition of the irrational, just as there is no precise definition of a natural law. A natural law is the experience of something recurring so consistently that it assumes the form of a definition. Yet it is not truly a definition. It is an experience raised to the level of an idea.

But it remains an experience. So too, the concept of reason is an experience. A person understands what is rational and what is not. It is not something taught; it is something experienced. Reason, then, as experience means that what God has made within us and around us accords with what is called the nous, the spiritual intellect. This is what we call rational: a harmony, we might say, a harmony between all that God has made and what He has given you—the faculty of judgment that we call reason—so that, when you judge and observe, you find yourself in harmony with what exists around you: the sun rises, the apple falls, and water moves in its appointed way.

Everything exists in an order with which reason fits and agrees. God, therefore, creates nothing irrational. The devil comes and throws creation into disorder, bringing about the phenomenon of irrationality. In our lived experience, sin is precisely this irrational thing: the alien element, that which is contrary to reason. This irrational element must therefore be driven out. And you know that there is one supremely irrational element within creation, again introduced by the devil. Do you know what it is? Death. Death is the great absurdity, the great contradiction of reason. Why should death exist?

It is a monstrous distortion, the most irrational thing of all. But Holy Scripture says that the devil introduced death. “God did not make death,” says the Wisdom of Solomon. He did not make death. Therefore, my dear friends, let us understand that irrationality comes from the devil and that, in this context, sin is what is irrational.

Now, it is not irrational to examine a subject from many different sides. That is not irrational; we are simply viewing a matter from several perspectives. What one person has not fully worked out in his thinking, the person beside him may perceive. That is not irrational. Paragraph six: “At the same time as these things.” Then you say...

“And all his pomp.” After saying that you renounce the devil and his works, you now come to the third point: “and all his pomp.” You renounce all his pomp. What, then, is this pomp? To understand the word, think of a procession or parade. Notice how one thing follows another, forming an ordered sequence. This is what we call a procession. But what is this procession, this pomp of Satan? What, then, is Satan’s pomp?

Saint Cyril says: “The devil’s pomp consists in a mania for the theater, horse racing, hunting, and every such vanity.” The saint, praying to be delivered from this, says to God—Saint Cyril explains that this pomp is a whole series of things and situations, elements of life in a city, especially when people devote themselves to them. And first he mentions the mania for the theater...

...horse racing, and hunting. But you will say to me—you will be surprised, because he includes still more things afterward. You will be surprised at what all these things may be. My dear friends, he says: “The saint, praying to be delivered from this, says to God.” Which saint? The Psalmist. It is Psalm 118:37 in the Septuagint: “Turn my eyes away, that I may not behold vanity.” Come and turn my eyes away, so that I may not see vanity.

In Holy Scripture, and often in the Old Testament, “vanity” means idolatry. Pay attention: idolatry. Today the word “vanity” does not mean only idolatry; it also refers to many other things. We say that something is vain, and so forth. Here it means idolatry. And what does the Psalmist ask? He asks God to turn his eyes away, because a person does not have the strength to turn his eyes away by himself. It is just like what Odysseus asked of his sailors: to bind him so that he could hear, yet could not reach the Sirens, who sang that truly deadly song. And so...

Someone may say to himself: “I will pass by that place. There is a cinema there with many very provocative pictures, but I will not look.” Yet when he reaches it, he turns his head and looks, because he cannot accomplish this by himself. So he pleads with God: “You come and turn my eyes away, so that I will not see those things.” Then he passes by without looking, because God’s help comes and guards him from looking. This is what “turn away” means. Who is to turn them away? You, O God. Whose eyes? My own. “Turn my eyes away, that I may not behold vanity.”

And still more, do not let my heart become attached to that vanity, because when the eyes fall upon such a thing, the heart usually fastens itself to it afterward. Saint Cyril is speaking of the mania for the theater. He explains further: “Let not the mania for the theater be an object of eager concern for you, where there are the lewd faces of mimes, insults performed amid every kind of indecency, and the frenzied dances of effeminate men.” I shall take it word by word. He says...

Do not let an obsession with the theater become something important to you; in other words, do not let it occupy your interest. I am often asked, especially by young men and women, “May I go to the cinema or the theater?” My answer is this: if you wish to make spiritual progress, do not go. Of course, I do not deny that wholesome theater also exists. Even that may not be entirely free of unhealthy elements, but wholesome theater does exist and can truly instruct us. Let us not forget that the ancient Greeks held this lofty view: the theater is a school.

That is precisely why the poor were admitted free of charge. All the citizens of Athens, where the theater developed—though other cities also had theaters; I am simply speaking of Athens here—were meant to be instructed. That understanding has remained even to this day: an actor who takes on a role receives instruction. He himself is first taught, and then, through the character and manner he assumes—this is why he is called an actor, one who forms character—he conveys whatever lesson the playwright wishes the people to learn, whatever purpose the author has in mind.

Consequently, the theater could not in itself be something ugly or evil. That is why, in what we have called the Golden Age of Athens, we find works that are truly classics. Truly so. Of course, there are also works that may possess the stature of classics but would nevertheless be unacceptable to Christians; however, I do not wish to go into greater detail. In general, though, this was the nature of theater at that time. Later, when the Romans conquered Athens, what the ancient classical writers had once established—or rather, had developed into theatrical performance—

—declined into a theater of mimes and mimicry. Thus, by the second century before Christ, when the Romans came, classical theater no longer existed. It had become what we would now call a revue: performances based either on current events or on ridiculing particular people. Even Aristophanes, though regarded as a classical author, ridiculed Socrates as a person.

Everything we commonly hear about Socrates’ wife—that she was a dreadful woman, that she chased him, poured water over him, and treated him in such ways—comes from Aristophanes, who mocked Socrates on stage. But these things are not serious. Socrates was not as Aristophanes portrayed him. This amounted to an outrage against the person of Socrates. There was also mimicry, however, and Saint Cyril speaks of that here. The features he attributes to these performances belong to decadent theater. Pay attention—I will say it once again: decadent theater. You cannot watch Sophocles’ Antigone without being moved, or Aeschylus’ Persians without being moved, and so on, as you understand. Those works instructed people, and they will continue to instruct them.

The theater was diverted from instruction into mere entertainment—and, unfortunately, entertainment that destroys the spectator’s soul. To make the audience laugh, even crude and vulgar things are said. The same is true of the cinema. But Saint Cyril puts it very beautifully...

Saint Cyril, inspired by God, used the word “mania.” Tell me: are not people today obsessed with the cinema, and especially with television, sitting there continually watching? It is a mania—a terrible mania, a truly terrible mania. Indeed, it is an obsession from which I do not know whether a person can free himself unaided. A wife may go to her husband and tell him that what he is watching is not good, and he may begin insulting her because she interrupted his viewing, and so forth. It is a genuine mania. “There are the wanton faces of mimes.” Do you see? He does not say actors; he says mimes.

For the theater had fallen into decline, as I told you, and there were only mimes—people making various voices and doing all sorts of imitations. Degraded things, utterly and completely degraded. You know that once, when Nero came to Athens—one scarcely knows whether to laugh—he attended a performance. It was a variety show, what they call a variety theater. The program included Nero himself singing and reciting his own poems—that madman. In fact, he even had one of his generals with him.

Who captured Jerusalem in AD 70? Titus’ father. In any event, this general of Nero’s—I cannot remember his name—dozed off for a moment. With a performer such as Nero before him, he nodded his head, closed his eyes, and fell asleep. Nero saw him from the stage. My dear friends, the man’s life was in danger; Nero nearly had him killed. He took the man’s behavior as a personal slight, because Nero thought himself a great artistic figure. The Athenians, living under Roman occupation—the poor Athenians no longer belonged to the age...

—of the Golden Age. To flatter Nero, the Athenians arranged on stage for him to be married to the goddess Athena and even gave him a dowry of several talents of gold. This is no longer theater. This is degradation. This is decadence. Saint Cyril is therefore speaking here about mimes who, he says, have wanton faces. These performers utter obscenities. And what do they present? They stage a certain kind of spectacle, and, as I have told you, theaters of this kind still exist today. Whether men or women, these performers truly have wanton expressions.

Wanton—that is, immoral: shameless, brazen faces, both women’s and men’s. “Outrages committed.” All these performances are filled with abusive and filthy language. Today we would call it obscenity. Here, “outrages” does not simply mean insults; it means evil speech, dirty words, shocking vulgarities and foul language—something found in Aristophanes to an extreme degree. Even today, words and phrases are heard in such theaters that make a person feel ashamed and blush. And further, “every kind of indecency.”

They perform various shameless scenes on stage. Here in Larissa, a couple of years ago, that woman Cicciolina came—what was that Italian woman’s name? Was it something like that? She was even a member of parliament, if you please, so that one might see the decadence of European civilization—the decadence of European civilization. Yes, my dear friends, someone told me what this woman did... But why should I repeat it to you? I would offend your ears. She called for someone, and a soldier came forward... It is better to leave the rest unsaid. These are the indecencies performed...

—on stage. Do not forget that both the Old Testament and the Apostle Paul—especially the Old Testament—very frequently use the word “indecency” with reference to the genital area. And such things are performed on stage. “And the frenzied dances of effeminate men.” Who are these effeminate men? Men who resemble women and behave like women.

If you remember the old songs, especially those from before 1940, they had the following characteristic: in various melodies—tangos and the like—the men...

—sang in voices that were extremely soft and feminine. So much so that, if a man had even a little spirit in him, he might feel like slapping someone who made his voice so feminine in order to sing. In today’s songs, however, that effeminate voice is no longer present. It is not found in the songs. Instead, there is an element of violence and disorder. What words can I use to describe it? Yet there is something else as well.

Many performers—I hope they do not sue me—are homosexuals, whether they are announcers at one of the many radio stations, actors, or whatever else. Most of them—no, not most, but many of them—are effeminate, and one can see it in the way they speak and behave. Many among the writers, poets, painters, and others promoted on television, radio, and elsewhere can likewise be seen to be effeminate. And do you wish to see how many steps our society has descended in this respect?

Recently—yes, recently, about a year ago or a little more—a man was murdered. But let me not go into sordid details. He was murdered. Because he was a writer, he received a grand funeral at public expense, so that you may see the degradation of our civilization. Indeed, the Ministry of Culture said that such lonely people meet with this kind of fate; and the funeral was held at public expense.

Is this not degradation? Does it not reflect, like a mirror, the face of our contemporary civilization? This is what Saint Cyril means when he emphasizes: “Christian, you have been baptized.” You have no place among such things. You cannot take part in such things; you cannot go to the theater—you cannot, when theaters are of this kind, with “the frenzied dances of effeminate men.” These are dances that are frenzied—that is, mad, manic dances.

But I would say that the frenzied dance has left the theater and entered our homes, our public squares, our halls—everywhere. For I ask you: what about this modern music...

You know its many names, of course. Fundamentally, it is all one kind of frenzied music, with that familiar rhythm—jazz—with, we might say, a variety of forms. What else is it but frenzied music and, moreover, a frenzied dance—that is, something that drives people mad? Where have you ever heard of...

Where have you ever heard of people listening to music and smashing everything in the place where they are listening to it, pouring out into the streets and breaking shop windows, panes of glass, cars—whatever they find in front of them—and wrecking everything? This phenomenon first appeared with the Beatles. Wherever they went, the spectators and listeners smashed the place to pieces. Is that not true? And yet the Beatles were decorated by the Queen of England. Then those brave men who had received medals returned them to the Queen, saying, “She is lowering us to the level of the Beatles.” Decadence! Decadence! Decadence!

I want you to understand this decadence. Even if we were not Christians, we should not take part in such things, simply for reasons of human dignity and civilized life. We should not take part in them—how much more so when we are Christians, and these things drag us down so low. This is what Saint Cyril tells us about this obsession with the theater. Now he turns to another subject. He has mentioned two or three things, and he goes on to examine them in greater detail. He now comes to the subject of hunting.

“Then there are those who, in hunting, expose themselves to wild beasts in order to gratify their wretched belly. Seeking food for their stomachs, they themselves truly become food for the beasts instead of obtaining food for their bellies. Or, to speak more justly, for the sake of their own god, the belly, they cast away their very lives, fighting in single combat.” He is speaking about hunting. But there are very few minutes left, and I wish I had time to tell you more. Why do people go hunting? It is an obsession. If hunters engage in a little self-examination, they will realize it.

It is, so to speak, an addiction—a mania. They feel compelled to go hunting. Saint Cyril says here that they do it to gratify their wretched belly: to eat the hare, the woodcock, the wild boar, or whatever else they may hunt and find, and thus satisfy their gluttonous desires.

And what can I say when they themselves often become food for the wild beasts—especially in ancient times, when weapons were primitive? One could say that they made their own belly into a god. And then this god comes to send them...

hurtling to their destruction. My dear friends, let me say a few words to you. Hunting is a very ancient human activity. Yet God did not create man to eat animals. Permission to eat animals was granted after the flood of Noah. But God’s original will was not that man should eat meat, but plants. I have told you before that human teeth are not made for meat, but for plants. Look, by contrast, at the teeth of a cat or a dog, which are predatory animals and have large canine teeth...

These are predatory animals, and their teeth are made for flesh. A cat cannot chew; it seizes its food. It has teeth for catching, not teeth for chewing. Watch how a cat moves when it wants to eat. It cannot chew, and it often swallows its food without chewing it, precisely because it is unable to chew. Man, then, was not made to eat meat. Yet permission was granted, and we do eat meat. It is not a sin. Hunting in particular, however, is an activity that makes a man savage, no matter how much he may wish not to become so. I cannot imagine feeding little birds when they come to your window in winter, and then taking advantage of the snow...

by taking your shotgun and going out to kill them. I cannot regard that as love for creation. Think especially of those poor, freezing birds that flee and travel toward warmer regions, where there is no snow. Then the hunters go out to take advantage of the snowfall and kill the birds or animals. This is dreadful, because you go to kill an animal that is in desperate need, struggling to preserve its life, while you lie in wait to kill it. This is certainly not right. It is inhumane. Man was called to love the animals—yes, to love the animals. How, then, can you engage in such hunting? And there is something else as well.

In the past, when Saturday was not a day off, hunters would often go out on Sunday morning. In this way they missed going to Church. Do you understand, my brother, what it means to sacrifice going to Church for hunting, for the passion of hunting? Punishment often follows. You know that hunters have been killed, or that one hunter has killed another after mistaking him for a wild boar hidden in some thicket. You know that some have lost their eyes from shotgun pellets, and so forth. This is the punishment. But so that I do not dwell on this any longer, and so that we may finish here, if anyone is a hunter, let him begin to reflect on these things and never go hunting again. Let him say, “This far, and no farther.” In any case, what matters is...

that in his catechesis Saint Cyril tells us that the theater and hunting—and there is something else later that we shall examine another time, namely horse racing, which is very important, and football belongs there as well—constitute the pomp of the devil. You have been baptized. Take care not to admire the pomp of the devil. That is all for this evening, my dear friends.

...να πούμε κάθε ψέμα στην εξομολόγηση; Χίλιες ώρες χρειαζόμαστε για την εξομολόγηση, διότι θα καθίσουμε να διηγούμεθα την κάθε περίπτωση, το και το, το και το, το και το. Εδώ τι θα πούμε; Έχω πει ψέματα. Τι θα προσθέσω;

Σε μία δηλαδή κατάσταση που η λογική εντάσσεται και συμφωνεί. Ο Θεός λοιπόν δεν δημιουργεί τίποτε το παράλογο. Έρχεται ο διάβολος και αναστατώνει την κτίση και δημιουργεί το φαινόμενο του παραλογισμού. Αυτό δε στην εμπειρική μας ζωή, η αμαρτία είναι το παράλογο. Το ξένο στοιχείο, το παράλογο. Αυτό λοιπόν το παράλογο στοιχείο πρέπει να φύγει. Θα ξέρετε δε ένα παράλογο στοιχείο υψίστου μεγέθους που υπάρχει μέσα στην κτίση, του οποίου εισηγητής είναι ο διάβολος πάλι. Ξέρετε ποιο είναι; Ο θάνατος. Είναι το μεγάλο παράλογο ο θάνατος. Γιατί να υπάρχει ο θάνατος;

«Καὶ πάσῃ τῇ πομπῇ αὐτοῦ». Κατόπιν λέγεις ότι αποτάσσεσαι εις τον διάβολο, στα έργα του, και τώρα τρίτο σημείο: «καὶ πάσῃ τῇ πομπῇ αὐτοῦ», και αποτάσσεσαι από όλη την πομπή του. Τι είναι τώρα αυτή η πομπή; Αν έπρεπε να δούμε το θέμα πομπή, ας το καταλάβουμε όπως ακριβώς γίνεται μία παρέλαση και λέμε γίνεται μία πομπή. Προσέξτε, το ένα μετά το άλλο ακολουθούν κάποια πράγματα και δημιουργείται μία σειρά. Αυτό το λέμε πομπή. Ποια είναι όμως αυτή η πομπή του σατανά; Ποια λοιπόν είναι αυτή η πομπή του σατανά;

Πολλοί καλλιτέχνες, ελπίζω να μη μου κάνουνε μήνυση, είναι ομοφυλόφιλοι, είτε εκφωνητές είναι στον σταθμό, έναν ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό —έχουμε πάρα πολλούς ραδιοφωνικούς σταθμούς— είτε είναι ηθοποιοί, είτε είναι δεν ξέρω τι είναι. Οι πιο πολλοί από αυτούς —όχι οι πιο πολλοί— πολλοί από αυτούς είναι θηλυπρεπείς και το βλέπει κανείς πώς μιλούν και πώς συμπεριφέρονται. Και πολλοί από αυτούς, λογοτέχνες, ποιητές, ζωγράφοι και δεν ξέρω τι, που προβάλλονται από τηλεόραση, από ραδιόφωνο κλπ., βλέπει κανένας ότι είναι θηλυπρεπείς. Και θέλετε να δείτε πόσα σκαλοπάτια κατέβηκε η πολιτεία μας από πλευράς της;
