Summary

Saint Cyril’s first Mystagogical Catechesis explains the baptismal rites experienced by the newly illumined during the Paschal vigil of Great Saturday. The candidate then turned to Christ, confessed faith in Him as King and God, and recited the Creed as an act of personal union with the Church’s faith. Because baptism incorporates a person into the Body of Christ, the lecture emphasizes that baptism and the Church’s other mysteries are communal acts concerning every member rather than private family ceremonies.

With God’s help, we have now reached the first Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. Like the preceding catecheses, these five Mystagogical Catecheses were delivered as their continuation, in the year AD 350. This, then, is a text from the fourth century—very ancient and extremely important theologically, historically, and in other respects as well. The candidates for illumination had received eighteen catecheses together with the preliminary catechesis, nineteen in all, and on Saturday—Great Saturday—they came to be baptized. I believe I told you last time that when baptisms were held as a group during the Paschal season—or rather, on the day of Pascha—this was because Baptism, as we shall see, is a symbol of death and rebirth, as the Apostle Paul writes. Precisely because it bore this symbolism, on the evening of Great Saturday the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great was celebrated together

with Vespers; the Baptism took place, and afterward those who had been baptized received Holy Communion. There were many lights—which was entirely fitting—as a symbol of the new life. Methodios of Olympus, whom I mentioned as having produced a translation and some commentary in the eighteenth century, says that the lights symbolized both the virtues and the new life, the renewed life. And so, on the day of Pascha, they experienced the reality of their Baptism, and it was the greatest joy these people could ever have in their lives.

On the second day of Pascha, a new period of catechesis began. During those first five days—Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, as I told you last time—they listened to the Mystagogical Catecheses, so that they might learn why they had been baptized, why they had been chrismated, what the Divine Liturgy is, and what the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is. Thus, after they had been baptized, on the second day of Pascha, Bright Monday, Saint Cyril delivered the first Mystagogical Catechesis to them, concerning Baptism. They already had personal experience, however, because they had been baptized and knew what movements they had performed; now he explains the meaning of those movements during Baptism. We are at the second paragraph, since the first, as I mentioned last time, was a welcome—a spiritual welcome. ‘First you entered the outer chamber of the baptistery. Standing toward the west, you listened and were instructed to extend your hand; and, as though Satan were present, you renounced him.’ First of all, you entered the outer chamber of the baptistery. This outer chamber was simply part of the baptistery itself. It is well known that we find...

baptisteries, or baptismal buildings, attached to the main body of ancient churches. There were other buildings as well, since Christianity was no longer worshipping God under persecution and, following the Edict of Milan and the events that followed, now had the opportunity and freedom to expand. They had a library area and other spaces, including places for common agape meals and shared dining. There was also an area for the Baptism of those receiving catechesis. As Saint Cyril will tell us—and from the historical perspective we learn many details that he has preserved for us as part of the Church’s living practice—this series of catecheses is extremely valuable historically as well as theologically. Thus, there was what was called the outer chamber of the baptistery. At the end of this catechesis, he will tell us that the building was divided into two areas. That is why he calls this the ‘outer chamber.’ It was the first section, where what we today call the service of the catechumens was conducted—specifically, the exorcistic prayers,

the exorcisms. If you like, this has been preserved today in the following form. When we wish to baptize a child—since we practice infant Baptism—before approaching the baptismal font, one of the priests, if more than one is present, or the same priest if he is alone, takes the child and the sponsor to the entrance of the church. If there were an enclosed narthex, of course, this would take place outside the main church. Most churches do not have such a narthex, so it takes place inside, immediately after entering—on the left as one comes in. You have all seen the priest standing there and reading something over the child.

That ‘something’ consists of exorcisms—we shall speak about them, though not today—and then comes the declaration, ‘I renounce Satan’ and ‘I unite myself’: that is, I leave Satan and unite myself to Christ, and so forth. They first face west, as Saint Cyril will explain shortly; afterward they turn toward the east and come to the baptismal font, somewhere near the middle of the church, and the Baptism takes place. What is now done during the exorcistic prayers and exorcisms was then performed in a separate area. Once everything there had been completed, the candidate for Baptism would enter the chamber farther within,

the innermost chamber, which Saint Cyril—though not here, but further on—calls ‘the Holy of Holies.’ The baptistery was located there, and the Baptism took place there. Let us describe the baptistery of ancient times. It was a cross-shaped pool set into the ground—a pool in the shape of a cross. I have an image here on a book cover, though it is not clear enough for you to see properly. From one side, the person being baptized—or several people, if there were more than one—would descend two, three, four, or five steps, depending on the baptistery. They descended into this cross-shaped structure.

It was a pool shaped like a cross and filled with water. The baptizer—the priest performing the Baptism—stood above it, while those being baptized stood lower down. We no longer have such baptisteries today, except perhaps in a church where someone has deliberately revived the ancient form. Today we take a barrel and use it as a baptismal font, because an adult cannot fit into the familiar fonts, which can hold only a small child. If an adult needs to be baptized, we use a barrel. I think you must have seen this. It would be better, in my opinion—and someday we should understand this—to provide a small area for a baptistery when we build a large church. At least there could be one in each region or city,

perhaps in the Metropolitan Cathedral. Only one church needs it; there is no need for every church to build a baptistery. Then we would also have a picture of what baptisteries were like in antiquity. If you wish to see one, visit the Church of the Panagia Ekatontapyliani on Paros. A baptistery survives there, together with other things that preserve the glory of Christian antiquity. I call it glorious antiquity because so much took place then whose meaning we have now lost, and which we have forgotten even as history. Saint Cyril therefore says, ‘First you entered the outer chamber of the baptistery.’ When you entered,

‘standing toward the west,’ you stood facing west. ‘You listened’—that is, you received the instruction—‘and were commanded to extend your hand,’ to stretch out your hand like this, with this meaning: your hand held out firmly. ‘And, as though Satan were present, you renounced him.’ As though Satan stood there before you, you indicated with your hand that you rejected submission to him and were leaving his yoke. In other words, you were departing from his yoke and leaving his ranks. You renounced him!

‘I renounce’ means: I separate myself; I depart from the yoke, dominion, and ownership of another—in this case, of Satan. Here, my dear friends, the service book states in its rubrics that the priest takes the child with the sponsor and they stand facing west. Let me first say something about the words ‘facing west.’ Saint Cyril will explain them at greater length shortly, but since the phrase has arisen, let us consider it now. Baptism contains an exceedingly rich symbolism. Yet I need hardly tell you that this symbolism is not empty or bare symbolism, something merely figurative. No. In a mystical way—and that is why these are called Mystagogical Catecheses, as we have explained—it initiates the person into the new life. This new life, this renewed and transformed life, is not merely a type or figure. The remaking of the human person—his transformation, if you will—is something that ultimately brings him into the Kingdom of God. It makes him united by living growth, grafted into Christ.

This is like a graft inserted into the branch of a plant: what has been grafted becomes joined to it by living growth. The little branch and the trunk become one; the graft becomes one with the tree. In the same way, the believer comes and is grafted into the trunk, the living plant that is Christ. This grafting, then, must take place. And this grafting is real. Does not the new little branch that I have grafted draw sap from the main trunk so that it may grow? In the same way, the believer draws life-giving sap—the sap of eternal life—from Christ. This is not merely a type. It is a reality.

Nevertheless, all these realities are conveyed through a rich typology, as we shall see further on. It is well known, then, that the west symbolizes darkness and, consequently, death

and Satan, because Satan is the person who brings darkness to human beings, and also death, for death entered the human race through the envy of the devil. The west, then, is where the sun sets, and after sunset comes darkness.

It is therefore the symbol of the dominion and realm—the territory—of death, sin, and the devil. For this reason, the candidates turn toward the west, because the dominion of Satan is symbolically understood to be there. Pay attention: this is an image, because Satan is not located in the west. Satan is everywhere. I repeat, this is an image. We must not confuse the symbol with the reality.

We turn toward the west to address Satan. Conversely, when we turn toward the east, where the sun rises, it is a symbol of life. If you ask why we face east when we pray,

we pray facing east because the east is a symbol of Paradise. You all know that when God made Paradise—when He planted the earthly Paradise—He planted it eastward in Eden, eastward in Eden. The east, then, is a symbol of Paradise. When Adam lost Paradise—as a beautiful troparion says on Cheesefare Sunday—he sat opposite Paradise and longed for it. Thus, when we face east in prayer,

a longing should awaken within us to return to the Paradise we have lost. You may also ask why we bury our Christians facing east. As you know, every grave is arranged so that the head of the departed faces east. The departed person—again, this is a symbol—is turned toward the east because he awaits the resurrection of the dead and his entrance into the Kingdom of God. That is why we lay the departed facing east. You see that graves are not laid out facing in various directions.

That is not how it is done. Therefore, the realm of the west is the dominion of death, the dominion of Satan. Addressing ourselves in that direction, we symbolically encounter Satan. I say this for the fifth time: it is an image. The devil is not confined to the west, at least not as we understand direction here on earth. Once you had turned toward the west, you were commanded ‘to extend your hand’—that is, to stretch it out. Pay close attention: this instruction to extend your hand is extremely important, because a dialogue is taking place here, and this dialogue is of the utmost significance.

The service book says that the priest addresses the catechumen: ‘And the priest turns him toward the west, with his hands raised.’ Here it speaks of both hands, while Saint Cyril speaks of one hand, with the fingers fully extended. The priest asks him, ‘Do you renounce Satan?’ In other words: Are you leaving his subjection? Are you separating yourself from his dominion? Do you wish to depart from his ranks? Before receiving an answer, the priest asks a second question: ‘And all his works?’

“Do you renounce”—that is what is understood—“all the works of Satan?” And the third question: “And all his angels?” For Satan is one, while his angels are the demons. “And all his worship?” Again, the words “Do you renounce?” are always understood: Do you renounce all his worship? And one more question: “And all his pomp?”—all the pomp that belongs to him. These things, you know, require a great deal of explanation. We shall examine them, for Saint Cyril analyzes them. And then, with a single word, the catechumen says:

“I renounce him.” The priest asks him again: “Have you renounced Satan?” At first I asked whether you renounce him. Now I ask, “Have you renounced him?” You said that you renounce him; have you done so? And he replies, “I have renounced him.” Amen—yes, I have already left him; I am leaving him, rejecting him, abandoning my former master. “Then breathe upon him and spit upon him”—blow at him and spit upon him.

We shall examine all of this, one thing at a time. Why does it say, “Spit upon him”? Afterward, the candidate pledges allegiance to Christ. You have left Satan; now you unite yourself with Christ. The one being baptized, or the sponsor, answers, “I unite myself with Christ.” This is said three times, just as the preceding renunciation is said three times. Again the priest asks, “Have you united yourself with Christ?” “I have united myself with Christ.” “And do you believe in Him?” “I believe in Him as King and God.” Then he recites the Creed: “I believe in one God,” which Saint Cyril expounded over the forty days of Great Lent.

That exposition is contained within his eighteen catecheses, or nineteen if we include the preliminary catechesis. It is that renowned exposition of the Creed, and I do not know whether there is another so beautiful from a doctrinal point of view. So, my dear friends, let us consider these things. He says that you stretched out your hand—“having extended your hand.” You know that when someone makes a declaration, the hand is also used to give that declaration greater force. When we say, “That is the man,” the words are true, but the words alone are not enough.

When we point with our hand and say, “That is the man,” we make the declaration visible and tangible. And when the words are “I renounce,” the hand expresses hostility toward the one you are renouncing. It is like saying, “Now I will show you! Until now I was under your power; I was your servant and your slave, subject to your dominion. But now I am not.” This is the meaning of extending the hand: it makes my renunciation visible. It is therefore important. You must understand this.

He says that you should know that “in an ancient account the type is set forth in this way”—that is, we have an ancient story that serves as a type. Let me read it quickly, and then we shall analyze it: “Pharaoh, that most bitter and cruel tyrant, oppressed the free and noble people of the Hebrews. God sent Moses to lead them out of the wicked slavery of the Egyptians. The doorposts were anointed with the blood of a lamb, so that the destroyer would pass by the houses bearing the sign of the blood. In this wondrous way, the people of the Hebrews were set free.”

“But even after they had been set free, Pharaoh pursued them. Though he saw the sea miraculously divided before them, he still advanced, following step for step in their tracks; and at once he was submerged and drowned in the Red Sea.” Before we analyze this passage, I should tell you that Saint Cyril follows Saint Paul the Apostle in interpreting the Mystery of Baptism typologically. If we were to ask someone today, “Why were you baptized?” he might not even know the most elementary answer: “So that my sins might be forgiven.” Perhaps he would not know even that.

Very well. Yet it would still be inadequate to say only that through Baptism we receive the forgiveness of our sins. Where is the fullness of its meaning? We shall see it as we continue through the first two catecheses. But by way of introduction, let me say that through Baptism I first become united, as one grafted into Christ, with His death and Resurrection. This is of fundamental importance. We enter into the very life of Christ. That is what it means to become grafted into Him. I explained this image of being grafted in earlier. Then, once we have been grafted into Christ, we experience our rebirth.

We receive the seeds of eternal life, and also the great privilege of adoption as God’s children. You see, then, that Baptism brings not only what we might call negative fruits, but positive ones as well. The forgiveness of my sins is a blessing, but it removes something negative. Yet I also receive positive blessings. This is how Saint Paul the Apostle presents Holy Baptism typologically, and Saint Cyril follows his typology. He tells the ancient story of Pharaoh...

Pharaoh, that most bitter and cruel tyrant—and we shall use these two descriptions, for they are very fitting for the devil—oppressed the Hebrews, that free and noble people. Then God sent Moses to liberate them, and Moses truly became their deliverer. Before they departed from Egypt, the last and tenth plague announced by Moses to Pharaoh was to take place: the death of the firstborn of the Egyptians, from their children to their animals. And, Saint Cyril says, “the doorposts were anointed”—the lintels of their doors—

with the blood of a lamb. When the destroying angel, the destroyer, saw the blood, he miraculously turned away from the houses on which it had been used. And so the blood of the lamb—what rich, abundant typology we find here, for in it we now behold the blood of Christ, and so forth! “In this wondrous way, the people of the Hebrews were set free.” Miraculously, the destroying angel did not enter their homes. The firstborn of the Hebrews did not die, but only those of the Egyptians. And after the Hebrews had been set free, Pharaoh pursued them; and once again, a miracle occurred.

Pharaoh saw the sea divide and open, and, “following step for step in their tracks,” he pursued them along the path they had taken. After the Hebrews had crossed, he too attempted to cross, but “at once he was submerged.” Suddenly, immediately, he found himself beneath the water, because the sea closed over him. Then Pharaoh, together with his horsemen, his chariots, and his foot soldiers, was engulfed by the waters and drowned in the Red Sea. This is the ancient story, which I think we all know. Saint Cyril now comes to the third paragraph and shows us its typological meaning.

“Let us now pass from the old things to the new.” Let us pass, then, from the ancient events to the new. “From the type to the reality.” “There”—when? In ancient times—“Moses was sent by God into Egypt.” Moses was sent by God. Where? Into Egypt. “Here, Christ is sent from the Father into the world.” Here, the Father sends the Son into the world to accomplish in reality precisely what Moses had done then as a type. “There, Moses was sent to lead out a people oppressed in Egypt.” In those days, Moses was sent to lead...

an oppressed people out of Egypt. “Here”—where is “here”? In Baptism—“Christ comes to deliver those in the world who are afflicted by sin.” Here Christ comes to free from sin those who suffer beneath its burden in the world. There, the blood of the lamb served to ward off the destroying angel: when he saw it, he turned away from the houses, as I told you earlier. The word translated “warding off” comes from the verb “to turn away.”

You may also have seen this gesture many times in icons of the martyrs. With one hand they may hold the Cross—as martyrs usually do—and with the other they make this gesture. It is a gesture of rejection, meaning, “I do not accept this.” That is what it signifies. In the same way, the blood served to ward off death and kept it from entering the houses of the Hebrews. “Here, the blood of the blameless Jesus Christ has become a means of putting demons to flight.” Here, then, the blood of Christ...

becomes that which drives the demons away. “That tyrant”—who? Pharaoh—“pursued the ancient people as far as the sea.” He pursued them right up to the sea. “And this insolent, brazen, shameless, inhuman demon, the originator of evil, followed you as far as the saving waters themselves.”

The devil pursued you right up to the baptismal font, trying to keep you from being baptized and saved. “There, Pharaoh was submerged beneath the sea.” Pharaoh found himself under the water when the sea closed over him. “And here, the devil vanishes in the saving water.” Here the devil and the demons vanish in this water, which truly saves and grants salvation. One can see this typology clearly, my dear friends. And may we remember these things whenever we are invited to a Baptism.

I must tell you, of course, that Baptism, Holy Matrimony, and a funeral are not private matters; they are public acts of the Church. When a new member enters the Body of the Church, this is not a private event. A new person has become a new member of the Church. Yet when we hear that there is a Baptism, we say, “What concern is it of mine? It is a private affair of the family baptizing their child.” Do you see how far we have fallen? Or we say the same of Holy Matrimony, though it is a great Mystery and is...

an image and type of the Mystery of Christ and the Church. We say, “It is only a wedding; what concern is it of mine?” And what about a funeral? Through Baptism, someone entered the Church and the Kingdom of God. Now that person departs from this present world, from the Church Militant, and goes to the Church Triumphant. Can this leave us indifferent? Is it a private matter? Or when we hold a memorial service and entreat the Lord to forgive that person and bring him into the Kingdom, is this merely the private affair of the household holding the memorial, or does it concern the whole Church? My dear friends, I very deeply desire...

that we begin to understand that everything taking place within the Church has a public and communal character. Did you hear that? It concerns the whole body. This is true of both the good and the bad, of blessings and of scandals. You cannot say, “What concern is it of mine who is baptized?” Nor can you say, “What concern is it of mine if there is a scandal within the Church?” It does concern you, because the Church is a public body. This is also expressed by the Greek word for the Divine Liturgy, which comes from words meaning “public” and “work.” “Public” here means something belonging to the people. That is why we use the word “ministry” for other kinds of service as well.

We say, “a public ministry,” even though that is redundant, because a ministry is by its very nature public. But since we seem to have forgotten the meaning of the word leitós, we added the redundant word “public” and began saying “public ministry.” A ministry means something public, a public concern. It is not something about which you can say, “It does not concern me.” It concerns everyone. Who was born, who was baptized, who entered Holy Matrimony, who died, and what is happening within the Church—we must be aware of all these things. They do not concern only certain other people; they concern every member of the Church. That is when the members are truly alive. I believe this is something we understand. So let us understand it here as well.

Baptism too is a public act. And now, my dear friends, we come to the fourth paragraph: “Yet you hear that, with your hand outstretched, you are to speak to him as though he were present: ‘I renounce you, Satan.’” You see, while the hand remains outstretched—“with your hand outstretched,” that is, with the hand extended—you are told to speak as though the devil were present. And he is present. He is present. The words “as though” mean only that you cannot see him. You will utter the prayer because the devil must hear this. What did you say? You may ask me, “The devil must hear it?”

“I renounce you, Satan.” I am leaving you. Farewell, my former master, who tyrannized me and who, generation after generation, was that cruel master. I will use the words mentioned earlier: this cruel one whom he calls here—forgive me—“the most bitter and savage tyrant.” Can you imagine, my dear friends, that the devil might be moved by our pleas—that we could beg him and he would take pity on us? Has the devil ever taken pity on a human being? Never.

The Lord says that he has been “a murderer from the beginning,” and by “from the beginning” we are to understand: from the time humanity first appeared, from the very beginning of human existence. For what did he actually bring upon our first parents? Death—spiritual death, but also the death we now call biological death, which is in fact the separation of the soul from the body. He is a most savage and bitter tyrant. And what do you say? “I renounce you, Satan. I renounce you. I am leaving your ranks.” But you may ask: does a single word really mean anything to the devil? Let me put it the other way around. It certainly means something when you invoke the devil.

“Satan, come and help me.” Even if you say that only once, you have committed a sin. There is no greater sin than this. What more takes place in sorcery than the invocation of Satan? We invoke Satan and ask him to come and help us. And tell me this as well: recordings circulate, and cassette tapes copied from recordings made in America, where Satanism exists. What can we say? I do not know how such a thing happens. You see, many things spring up in that unfortunate land, and all these strange fruits spread far and wide until they reach our own country as well. They are hymns in the form of...

Satanic music and dancing—hymns to Satan, actual hymns. They say: “Satan, I worship you. Satan, I love you. Satan, you are everything to me. You are my king; you are the secret longing of my heart,” and many other things besides. Tell me, can someone become possessed when invoking the devil? What else could happen? Certainly, yes. And if not everyone who invokes him becomes possessed, it is because the grace of God often does not allow it. He knows why, in His love. Yet He does permit it in certain cases so that we may understand what is taking place. Therefore, if Satan hears us when we invoke him and comes to give us what we ask of him,

why would he not hear us when we tell him that we renounce him, that we are leaving him, and that we no longer want anything to do with him? You see, then, that the words “I renounce you” are of fundamental importance when spoken in the prelude to Baptism—that is, during the rites preceding Baptism itself. “I also wish to tell you why you were standing facing west, for it is necessary.” He says, “I also want to tell you why you stood facing west. It is necessary for me to explain this to you. For the west is the place of visible darkness, and he, being darkness, holds his dominion in darkness.”

“For this reason, as you symbolically face west, you renounce that dark and gloomy prince.” I have already explained to you that the west is the realm of darkness, where the prince of darkness dwells—the devil, that gloomy and dark prince. Gloomy means dark. And you turn in that direction to tell him that you have nothing whatsoever to do with him. “What, then, did each one say?” Each person who stood there spoke these words. So we see that Baptism was performed in groups. Group Baptism was common in the ancient Church. Today we usually baptize only one child or one adult.

Rarely might we baptize two children. You who are the most wicked and savage tyrant, I no longer fear you. “I no longer fear you.” Take heed: this is a tremendous declaration—I no longer fear you. Take heed, I say again: once a person has been baptized, that person must never again fear Satan.

When someone says, “But I am afraid,” this sometimes comes from that poor understanding—a theologically impoverished notion I have spoken to you about so many times—that Satan might enter through the keyhole. We shut the doors, close the windows, and leave the light on, thinking that perhaps Satan can come more easily in the darkness. No, my dear friends. Do not be afraid. Did you hear me? Do not be afraid. We must not fear Satan. He no longer has power. Satan was defeated upon the Cross of Christ, and those who make the Cross of Christ their own and become united with Christ—you see how often I will repeat this in our talks to come—have nothing to fear. The devil may...

come and wage war against you, but he cannot harm you. This is why, in one of the prayers of exorcism, we say: “Depart from the sealed image of God.” What is this sealed image of God? It is the human person. The human person is that image, and we drive the devil away. The devil will return more bitter than before, as Saint Cyril tells us somewhere later—I do not remember exactly where—more bitter than when we were subject and subordinate to him. When we return to sin, he takes terrible revenge upon us. That is why a sinner cannot easily escape from Satan.

A person was baptized and drove him away, but then, through weakness of will, returns once more under Satan’s dominion. “But today Christ has brought you to nothing, having partaken of my blood and flesh.” Why should I fear you? Christ has brought you to nothing. Christ shared in my blood and flesh, “so that through these sufferings He might destroy death by death, and I might not remain forever subject to bondage.” Do you see? This is immensely important: through His sufferings He destroyed death. Through His sufferings and His death, He destroyed my own death.

Do you see how the human person becomes united with Christ and enters into the very life of Christ? “I renounce you, deceitful and most cunning serpent.” I tell you that you are the ancient serpent. In the Apocalypse, John the Evangelist gives Satan three, four, even five names in order to reveal him through his different works in history. When he says in the Apocalypse, “You are the ancient serpent,” he is saying, “I recognize you and expose you. You are the one who deceived my ancestors, our first parents.” You are, then, a deceitful and exceedingly cunning serpent. The cunning one is the one who employs every means. Today we use “cunning” simply for a wicked person, but that is not its original meaning. “Wicked” is a different word.

The cunning one is the one who employs every work—that is, every possible means. And naturally, because he employs every means to accomplish something, the word “cunning” often acquired the negative meaning of “wicked.” The Greek word for wicked did not originally mean what it means today. It referred to one who undergoes pain—that is, toil. One who undergoes toil is laborious. Today, of course, the word has changed its meaning and refers to someone who is wicked. “I renounce you, for you are truly treacherous; pretending friendship, you committed every lawless deed and caused our ancestors to fall into apostasy.” I renounce you because you are treacherous and truly dangerous. Pretending friendship, you came to greet our first parents.

By coming to them, you committed every lawless deed and led my ancestors, Adam and Eve, into apostasy. “I renounce you, Satan, the author and accomplice of every evil.” I renounce you, for you are the author of every evil and the accomplice of every wicked deed. Here, then, as you understand, my dear friends, we shall remain with the fourth paragraph. God willing, next time we shall examine the meaning of the words, “and all your works,” and see what these works of Satan are. Here we see a fearsome image of warfare. The devil is the prince of darkness, and he is powerful when God does not intervene. The believer now comes, through the power of Jesus Christ, to confront this powerful prince,

to drive him away, reject him, and expose who he truly is. We shall see that creation is held under the devil’s dominion. For this reason, the exorcisms are performed not only over the human person, who is under demonic oppression, but also over the water in which that person will be baptized. The devil is regarded as lurking even in the water, because all creation is held under demonic oppression. Therefore, after the devil has been driven from the human person, he must also be driven from the water in which the person will be baptized. That water is then sanctified water. This is why, as you know very well, we do not pour it away just anywhere. We pour it into a special drain located inside or beside the church, precisely because this water has been freed from Satan’s dominion. In other words, it has been sanctified—and here “to sanctify” means “to set apart.” The water has been set apart and thus made free. We encounter the same act in other circumstances, such as the consecration of a church. Three times we carry the holy relics around the church as a boundary drawn around it.

The holy relics are finally placed within the Holy Table, where the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated. This procession is nothing other than the setting apart of this place from the surrounding profane space. It is like the planting of Paradise: although the earth itself is not profane, Paradise was a distinct and set-apart place. The same thing happens in Holy Matrimony, my dear friends. What exactly takes place? The threefold procession around the small table, which has taken the place of the Holy Table, sets apart the couple and the family they will establish within a sacred space—a space belonging to God, into which Satan has no right to enter. But when does he have no right to enter? When we do not give him that right. And how is that right given to him? Through sin. This is why newlyweds must go to Confession and prepare the ground, so that they may enter the life of their family in a sanctified state. This sanctified space, my dear friends, exists both in Holy Matrimony and in Baptism. The devil has no right to harm a person who has been baptized.

If that person is harmed, it is because through sin he himself has once again given the devil that right. You may point to a saint who can be tempted by the devil and say that the saint has no personal sins. But just as there is a godparent who guarantees what will take place for the person being baptized—reciting the Creed and so forth—and takes responsibility for the catechumen, that is what it means to be a godparent.

Δημόσιο έργον και το βάπτισμα. Και περνάμε, αγαπητοί, στην τετάρτη παράγραφο. «Αλλ' όμως ακούεις, τεταμένη τη χειρί, ως προς παρόντα ειπείν· αποτάσσομαί σε, σατανά». Βλέπετε εδώ, ενώ παραμένει τεταμένο το χέρι, «τεταμένη τη χειρί», δηλαδή απλωμένο το χέρι, τεντωμένο το χέρι, ακούς, λέγει, σαν να είναι παρών ο διάβολος. Και είναι παρών. Είναι παρών. Το «σαν» δεν σημαίνει τίποτε άλλο παρά ότι επειδή δεν τον βλέπεις εσύ. Ευχή θα πεις, γιατί ο διάβολος πρέπει να το ακούσει αυτό. Τι είπατε; Θα μου πείτε, να το ακούσει ο διάβολος;
