Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem concludes his Eighteenth Catechesis by completing his exposition of the Nicene Creed and its promise of eternal life. During Bright Week, the newly baptized received mystagogical instruction about Baptism, Chrismation, the Eucharist, the Divine Liturgy, Christian life, and the Lord’s Prayer. The lecture urges Christians to recover the ancient Church’s spiritual understanding of Pascha instead of reducing the feast to food and entertainment.

We had said that we had finished the Eighteenth Catechesis of Saint Cyril, and indeed we had. We concluded by speaking of eternal life, which is the final phrase of the Creed. For these catecheses of Saint Cyril are nothing other than a masterful exploration of the Creed in depth. Contemporary scholars praise both their Orthodox soundness and the method by which this treasure called catechesis was offered to the catechumens.

The catecheses of Saint Cyril truly are a treasure, as you will already have noticed over the years during which we have studied them. A few paragraphs remain—one, two, three, four paragraphs that conclude the Eighteenth Catechesis. They are more exhortative and practical in character. If you like, I have underlined only a few points, so that I need not quote the entire text. Here Saint Cyril says that we have finished, and, in a manner of speaking, he invites his listeners to prepare themselves

for the approaching event of their Baptism. He says: “During these past days of the Forty-Day Fast, we have spoken,” and so forth, “delivering as many catecheses as the grace of the Lord allowed,” and so forth. That is, we developed these catecheses during Lent as fully as we could, as far as time permitted and as far as was possible. First of all, please notice that Lent already existed—the Great Lent. You see, then, that in the year 350 after Christ, the Forty-Day Fast was already observed.

There are those who say that these things are inventions of the priests. No, my dear friends, they are not. And you can see why the Church imitates the forty days during which the Lord withdrew into the wilderness and fasted—and indeed fasted absolutely. He neither ate nor drank for forty days. Astonishing! In this way He left us the pattern for the fast of the Forty Days. Holy Week, of course, is not included in this Forty-Day Fast. Thus we have forty days plus seven—forty-seven days, if you like, simply for your information.

During the week we are now passing through, known as Cheesefare Week, if you open the Typikon, you will see that on Wednesday and Friday, although foods are permitted, there is neither an epistle nor a Gospel reading. The exception is if a feast happens to fall on one of those days, celebrating a Saint—as with Saint Polycarp on Friday. If a particular church, or someone else, wishes to celebrate the feast, the Divine Liturgy may be served. Yet there is no regular epistle or Gospel reading; only the readings appointed for the Saint being celebrated are used. These two days complete Great Lent, bringing the total to forty-nine days. For it is well known that during the days of the Forty-Day Fast

a full Divine Liturgy is not celebrated; instead, we have the Presanctified Liturgy. Thus, as soon as Great Lent began, Saint Cyril began teaching his subjects to the catechumens—that is, those who were candidates for Baptism. A person could remain a catechumen for one, two, three, or even five years; if he had not made progress, he was not baptized. Those who were ready and eligible to be baptized were the ones who received these catecheses. This does not mean, of course, that the catechumens remained completely uninstructed throughout all those years. But now systematic instruction was offered throughout Lent, and these homilies formed that instruction. Saint Cyril delivered them within forty days; we have covered them over several years—quite a few, in fact, I think eight years. Once they had been baptized, they would hear the lessons that followed. We shall see this as we continue. “Now that the holy day of Pascha is at hand”—it is approaching, it is coming, the day of Pascha has arrived—“and the time of our rebirth in Christ through the washing of regeneration, after you have received illumination, you will again be taught what is fitting, God willing.” In other words, your Baptism must now take place. When?

On the day of Pascha. After that day, we shall continue our lessons. Listen to how he says it here: “You will be taught”—you will receive instruction—“again concerning what is fitting, God willing,” concerning those things that you must be taught. God first—God willing, God first. The lessons, then, will continue. A little further on we shall see how they continued. But here I would like to pause briefly, so that you may see how certain remnants have been preserved. When these are examined—and remnants must indeed be preserved; a remnant means something left behind—they disclose a certain history. We must not say, “What use is this, and what use is that?” This...

Could anyone involved in archaeology, let us say, or in history ever speak that way? Never! Absolutely never! For he is a scholar, and he knows that even if a remnant tells him nothing today, it may tell him something tomorrow. If he finds another remnant, and then another, he can connect them and draw conclusions. That is how a scholar works. Likewise, a spiritual person—or the Church, which is the guardian of these momentous historical events in her life—must not erase these remnants. And she does not erase them. At least the Orthodox Church must not erase these remains, these relics, as we might call them. Listen; you will all remember and know this.

On Great Saturday we have Matins, which is nothing other than what we described in connection with the Epitaphios. In fact, the service of the Epitaphios is the Matins of Great Saturday. Let us continue. The next morning we say, “Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” and immediately the opening psalm begins—the psalm with which Vespers begins. During the entrance we sing, “O Gladsome Light.” Then, after “O Gladsome Light,” we say, “Let us pray to the Lord,” recite the prayer of the Trisagion Hymn, and enter into the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great.

This is called the Vesperal Divine Liturgy because it is joined to Vespers. Listen carefully, my dear friends: this Vesperal Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great is nothing other than Vespers. Vespers! And which Vespers is it? The Vespers of Pascha. That is why we hear, “Arise, O God.” Rise up, O God, arise! In the Old Testament, this “arise” means: rise up, behold Your enemies, and fight against them. Why do You remain seated? Here, however, it takes on a particular meaning: arise from the tomb. Your enemies placed You in the tomb; now arise, and so forth.

These troparia are so beautiful. Among the readings appointed there, the entire Book of Jonah is also read. As you know, readings are appointed during Vespers. This Vespers, then, is the Vespers of Pascha. The proof is that after the afternoon of Saturday—Great Saturday—we have nothing else. No other service. We do not return until, let us say, eleven o’clock at night to celebrate the Resurrection. But that Vespers is joined to a Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great. This Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great was inserted into Vespers for the following purpose: so that those preparing for illumination could be baptized.

Afterward they would receive Holy Communion: they would be baptized and then commune. Thus this Liturgy, which today we celebrate in the morning, was celebrated in the afternoon in the ancient Church. That is why it is called the Vesperal Divine Liturgy—not nocturnal, but vesperal, celebrated in the afternoon and joined to Vespers—for the sake of those preparing for illumination. Here is another remnant: today, when we celebrate the Mystery of Baptism, we say, “Blessed is the Kingdom.” Why? It shows that the Mystery of Baptism was once incorporated into the Divine Liturgy. What has been preserved from that practice? The words “Blessed is the Kingdom,” which we say in the Divine Liturgy.

This too is a remnant. And so those preparing for illumination were baptized. They carried lights—candles. The same is true at Theophany. You know that at Theophany we also have the Vesperal Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great. It is celebrated on the eve of the feast, and afterward we perform the Great Blessing of Water. All these things were done for the sake of those being baptized—for the sake of those being baptized. Since I have reached this point, allow me to address something many of you ask. And let me tell you: no one knows. Neither do I. Do we keep the water from the Great Blessing? Do we not keep it? What are we to do? Utter confusion! Whoever you ask, in the end you will receive no answer. Confusion, confusion, confusion, confusion. I shall tell you just one thing.

You ask why, although we have the Great Blessing of Water on the feast itself, we repeat it on the eve in conjunction with the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great. If that is your question, I shall answer. The reason is this: at that same Vesperal Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great, joined to Vespers as on Great Saturday, the catechumens—those preparing for illumination—were baptized. Because they also carried candles, the feast came to be called “the Feast of Lights.” The “Lights” were the candles carried by those who, having been baptized, had received illumination. Many Christians would rush

to take some of the water in which they had been baptized, because that water, as you know, must be poured away in a particular manner. You know that in the past Baptism was celebrated in people’s homes—long ago, before 1955. Then, shortly after 1950, the Synod issued an encyclical forbidding Baptism in homes. In those days you would see baptismal fonts being carried through the streets to people’s houses. The older priests will remember this. But the water was brought back to the Church, because it could not be poured out anywhere except into the sacrarium. Many Christians would then rush to take some of the water in which people had been baptized, so that they might keep it as blessed water. The Church would therefore tell them, “Do not take this water.”

But they persisted. You know, once people have learned a custom, you cannot get it out of them—and who knows exactly what it may be? There may be something good in it and something bad as well; both are possible. In time, Baptisms at these feasts ceased because infant Baptism became established. Yet for the sake of those who used to take blessed water from the water in which people had been baptized, the Church began performing on the eve the blessing of water with the Precious Cross, identical to the one performed the following day. I said identical—identical. Not one extra “and,” not one “and” omitted. The only difference, to show that the two days are distinct, is that one initial prayer is said secretly. In this way we create a distinction between one day and the other. You will ask me, then, which water should we keep? I shall answer: I do not know.

I have told you only the historical background. Now, they were baptized on that day, they carried lights, and they received Holy Communion. Then, on the day of Pascha—Bright Day—the Liturgy is celebrated again, because Vespers had been joined to the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great. On the following day we have the Liturgy of Chrysostom, which belongs to that new day. Notice that prayer for the catechumens which we say, attributed to Saint John Chrysostom or to Philotheos—the one that begins in a certain way, and so forth: “The fatted calf is ready; let no one leave hungry,” and so on and so forth. My dear friends, this prayer does not belong in that position. It is wrongly said at the end, and you can see this clearly.

It is an anachronistic reversal of order. It says, “Let no one leave.” But the Liturgy is over; everyone is to receive Holy Communion. The Liturgy has ended; everything is finished. All these elements are related and harmoniously bound together, revealing the ancient praxis—the active worshipping life—of the Church. The people who moved and acted within the Church as they did experienced these things and rejoiced in them. That is why, whenever something fuller is offered for some reason—an all-night vigil or something similar—you see how people flock to it. Do you see why? Because something, we might say, from the early Christian era, something from the ancient Church, is being offered, and people desire to experience it. And this is not without significance.

I have mentioned a few points in order to give us the background for understanding why Saint Cyril says these things to those preparing for illumination. He continues. I am speaking only in excerpts, since I underlined just a few sentences. “After the holy and saving day of Pascha, beginning immediately on the second day of the week”—here, “Sabbaths” means a week. That is, on Monday of Bright Week, the second day of Pascha. Do you see? “Immediately, on each day”—every day—“throughout the following days of the week.” These days extended through Friday. “After the assembly”—just as during Great Lent there was no catechesis on Saturday, because there was another order of services.

“After the assembly, you shall enter the holy place of the Resurrection.” Thus, as he has told us elsewhere, the catecheses were delivered in the holy place of the Resurrection—the very place on whose floor Orthodox Christians still enter and venerate to this day. There the catecheses of Saint Cyril were delivered. When someone knows a few things like this and then visits a holy place, a place of pilgrimage, he experiences it more deeply; it feels entirely different. So Saint Cyril delivered his catecheses here? Yes, here. He says it again: “After the assembly, you shall enter the holy place of the Resurrection”—that is, the place where Christ’s Resurrection occurred.

The tomb of Christ was incorporated into the Church of the Resurrection, as you all know. “You shall hear further catecheses, God willing.” You will hear other catecheses, further lessons, God willing—if God so wills. We should not say, “Next Monday we will give the talk, no matter what.” How do we know whether we will still be alive next Monday? And incidentally, since next Monday is Clean Monday, we will not hold our lesson here; there will be no gathering at all. God willing, we shall return on the Monday after the Sunday of Orthodoxy—that is, after the First Sunday of the Fast. God willing, if God so wills. “In these, once again, concerning each of the things that have taken place...”

“...you shall be taught their causes, and you shall receive proofs from the Old and New Testaments,” and so forth. We shall again have catecheses, drawing evidence from both the Old Testament and the New Testament for everything said in them. So there is teaching to be received here. He then tells us what they will be taught: the Mystery of Baptism, the Mystery of Chrismation, the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the Divine Liturgy, the whole of Christian life, and the interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer. His interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer is very brief. Now notice something here. In the Apostolic Constitutions we find the following directive. If I remember correctly, it is in the eighth book—the Apostolic Constitutions...

...Canons that form the first collection of Canons, followed by the other Canons of our Church that came from the Ecumenical and local Councils. These Apostolic Canons were confirmed by later Councils. Pay attention. It says there that during Holy Week and Bright Week there is to be no work; they are to be days of rest. You know that it also speaks there of Saturday as a day of rest. And now some people act as though they are introducing something new when they speak of Saturday rest. Others say that it is a Jewish contrivance. That is possible; it is possible. Pay attention. Just as during the period of Turkish rule...

...the Jews succeeded in making Saturday a day of rest in Ioannina, under Ali Pasha, and elsewhere, while Sunday became a working day. Then Saint Kosmas the Aetolian rose in protest, and it was the Jews who caused his death: they slandered Saint Kosmas, and Ali Pasha gave the order for him to be hanged. You see, then, why the Jews there abolished Sunday and the markets were held on that day. Do you remember the open-air markets that, many years ago, used to be held on Sundays? They were remnants of that period. Saint Kosmas cried out and said, “No.” So it is possible that the institution of Saturday rest is the work of Jewish Zionist influence; it is possible. But regardless of that...

...the Church advocated Saturday as a day of rest. This is clearly written in the opening paragraphs of the eighth book of the Apostolic Constitutions. I told you this once before, long ago. So it is not something new, and those who think they are innovating are not doing so. But notice why there was to be no work on Saturday and Sunday: so that everyone could go to Church—not only the masters, but also the servants, everyone. No one was to remain at home, so that all might receive the teaching we now call the sermon. We have reduced the liturgical sermon to ten minutes, or seven minutes—even five minutes, if you like—so that those who came to Church on Sunday might learn and be instructed.

Thus, the book of the Apostolic Constitutions speaks of ceasing from work during Holy Week and Bright Week. It says: no work at all. Everyone is to go to Church, including servants and household staff—everyone. No work in the fields, no other labor, no mills grinding wheat; nothing. It is a time of rest. What is the purpose? The text itself tells us: that everyone might take part in the services and also be instructed in the faith—in everything concerning the Passion of Christ during Holy Week, and everything concerning the Resurrection of Christ and the resurrection of the dead during Bright Week.

So the purpose of this rest from work was to bring everyone into the Church. And Saint Cyril says here: beginning on the Monday after Pascha, everyone is to be in the Church for lessons, instruction, and catecheses. We have now forgotten all this. We have holidays today, of course. And never mind that shops are supposedly closed until the afternoon of Great Friday—forgive me, until noon—and then from Friday noon onward they are open. While the service of the Epitaphios is taking place, the men come out of the shops holding candles. What sort of thing is this? Why do we have the Taking Down from the Cross in the morning and nothing in the afternoon? It is strange. In any case, as for Pascha and Bright Week...

...what has become of the meaning of these feasts, the meaning of why Christ rose from the dead? Even though “Christ is risen” is proclaimed about sixty times each day during the services of Bright Week, about sixty times during Matins and the Divine Liturgy. Around the Holy Altar alone it is proclaimed ten times at Matins and another ten times during the Divine Liturgy—twenty times. Around the Holy Altar alone it is said twenty times in order to emphasize the event. Yet who knows that the dead will rise in their bodies? And what do we do? We feast and revel. We have placed all the importance on the lamb and the revelry. But this, my dear friends, is what Christians have come to. That is why we must also bring forward the history of life in the ancient Church. Thank you.

We must see how they lived and how they grew in knowledge and reverence, so that, if there is any way—or if this can at least be put into practice by some people—we may return to that ancient practice of the Church and stop saying that Pascha has come so that we may eat and drink, become drunk, and gorge ourselves. This, then, is how the true Christian rejoices and says: “Finally, brethren, rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” The Apostle says this to the Philippians. “For your redemption draws near”—this is from the Gospel according to Luke—“and the heavenly host of angels awaits our salvation.” Rejoice!

Your redemption has come. The angels await your Baptism, so that you may be enrolled among the citizens of heaven. Saint Cyril also says to his catechumens, those preparing for illumination: “You who have been counted worthy of the name of the faithful, concerning which it is written: ‘Those who serve Me shall be called by a new name, which shall be blessed upon the earth.’” This “new name” is found in the Prophet Isaiah, chapter 65, verses 15–16. Very well. And you, he says, are now being counted worthy to receive the name of the faithful. You are first catechumens, then those preparing for illumination, and now, when you are baptized, you will be called faithful.

It is well known that during the Divine Liturgy the catechumens and those preparing for illumination departed after the Gospel reading. First came the litany beginning, “Have mercy on us, O God,” then a prayer for the catechumens, and after that two prayers for the faithful: the first and second prayers of the faithful. This can be seen more clearly elsewhere, and it too is a remnant, though it is no longer said in order to shorten the Divine Liturgy. As I told you earlier, we must not remove these remnants. Anyone who thinks conscientiously and with scholarly care should pay attention to them. We must not remove them; they ought to be heard. Unfortunately, we have removed them, and they are no longer heard. Thus we have the litany, the exclamation “For You are a merciful God who loves mankind,” then the prayer for the catechumens, and then the two prayers of the faithful. As the prayer of the faithful began, the catechumens would leave, and the Church would empty. A modern commentator writes of how much weeping could be heard as the catechumens departed. They had to leave, and they longed for the day of their Baptism, anxiously awaiting the arrival of that great hour. This is why Saint Cyril addresses those preparing for illumination here, though I have omitted a great deal of what he says to them.

This is preserved very well in the Presanctified Liturgy, where the instructions are given: “All catechumens, depart. Catechumens, depart. All catechumens, depart.” Thankfully, these words are still said in the Presanctified Liturgies; there, at least, we have not cut them out. What do we observe? The catechumens had to leave. We also observe that there is a special prayer for those preparing for illumination. Catechumens are one group, and those preparing for illumination another. As I told you, those preparing for illumination were the ones getting ready to be baptized. But they too had to leave after the catechumens, once a special prayer had been offered for them throughout Great Lent, until the day of Pascha came and they could be...

...baptized. There is also something I forgot to tell you at the beginning: Baptism took place at Pascha. This is widely known, and a remnant of it remains. In place of the Trisagion Hymn during the Divine Liturgy, we sing: “As many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Alleluia.” And “As many as have been baptized into Christ” is sung throughout Bright Week in honor of those who were baptized. It is sung for them, to impress upon them that through their Baptism they have put on Christ. Pay attention, because I am telling you something in advance here, before we enter the first catechesis. Saint Cyril does not regard—and this is why Saint Cyril is such a great theologian—he does not regard Baptism merely as a means by which...

...ancestral sin, or even one’s personal sins, are forgiven. He sees Baptism exactly as the Apostle Paul does: as the means by which we enter into intimate communion with God and receive adoption as His children. You become a child of God. This intimacy, this drawing near of the baptized person to God, is like the relationship between me and my clothes. What relationship do I have with my clothes? I wear them, and they become part of how I appear—my clothes. Thus he says: “As many of you as were baptized in the name of Christ—as many as have been baptized into Christ”—these are Paul’s words—“have put on Christ.” You have clothed yourselves with Christ. Christ has become your garment, your clothing. He is the first and finest robe that we encounter in the parable of the Prodigal Son: “Bring out the best robe,” he says. That robe is Christ, whom we receive through Baptism. Therefore, as you understand, Baptism is not simply the forgiveness of sins or of ancestral sin. It is something far beyond that—something very great and very profound. But we shall examine these things when we analyze these two mystagogical catecheses. And he concludes in this way, speaking of the new name that you will receive. What is this new name? Christian. Concerning this, there are...

...beautiful observations and commentaries by the Fathers of our Church, especially the early Fathers, on the new name mentioned by the Prophet Isaiah: the name Christian. Do you know what the earlier name was? It was Israel—the name Israel and the name Israelites. The relationship among the words Christian, Christ, and Christians is like this: Jacob wrestled throughout the night before crossing a small tributary, the Jabbok, if I remember correctly—a tributary of the Jordan River. After everyone else had crossed—his children and his animals—he remained behind alone.

During the night, Scripture says, he wrestled with someone, and the one with whom he wrestled said to him, “Let Me go.” It was God. To be even more precise, it was Christ before His Incarnation; it was God the Word (Logos). He wrestled with Him. “Let Me go,” says God the Word. “No, I will not let You go unless You bless me.” A forceful exchange takes place, and God loves to be taken by force, as it is written: “The Kingdom of God suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.” Then He says most beautifully, “Very well, I bless you.” And here I ask: “Very well, I bless you”? God was overcome. God the Word was overcome, and He said to him: “Now you will no longer be called Jacob.”

“You shall be called Israel.” Indeed, later in the account in the book of Genesis, and in many other places throughout the Old Testament, he is sometimes called Jacob and sometimes Israel. Israel is first the man himself. Yet at times the entire people is also called Israel, because the people received their name from Jacob. From Jacob, of course, come the other tribes as well, since Jacob is the forefather of the twelve tribes. What does Israel mean? Listen: beloved, beloved—the beloved one. Thus the first name of this people was “the Beloved.” What, then, is the new name?

Christian. This is the new name prophesied by Isaiah. If you ask me why the name changes, it is because the covenants change. You may know that a person receives a name when baptized, but that name may be changed. Yes, it is not sinful. For this reason, among celibate clergy—and it may also be done among married clergy—a person may be given a new name. At ordination as a deacon, he may receive a name different from his baptismal name. When he becomes a priest, he may change his name again if he wishes; if he does not wish to, he need not. As a bishop, he may change it once more, and as a monk...

...he may change his name again. Thus at Baptism, at monastic tonsure, and at each of the three degrees of Holy Orders, a person may change his name as many as five times. The simple reason is that the name is not bound to the Mystery of Baptism, nor is it bound to Holy Orders. Does that surprise you? It is not bound even to Holy Orders. It is not. Pay attention, because this greatly surprises you: it is not bound to them, and therefore it may be changed. Once, when we changed the name of a monk, I heard such abuse from his mother as not even the Peneios River could carry away—and that river carries all the filth of Trikala and Larissa. “How dare they change my child’s name?” she said.

What sort of thing is that? Well, names do change. I am informing you of this now: names change; they may be changed. And you see it here—the new name. Whenever there is Baptism or Holy Orders—and, as you know, the monastic tonsure is a dedication, a kind of Baptism—there is consecration or dedication through cutting hair from the head in the form of a cross, just as at Baptism. You know this very well. Those hairs are not thrown away; they have been dedicated to God. The hair cut at Baptism is not thrown away either; it falls into the baptismal font and goes into the sacrarium. You will learn many things if you come and listen to these mystagogical catecheses. Yes, this is what a human being offers to God, for he has nothing else to offer Him. But this offering...

This is what happened with Samson. Do you know where his strength lay? Many say it was in his hair. But how could that be? And when Delilah cut his hair, we are told, he lost his strength. It may seem strange, but it is not strange at all. Samson’s strength lay not in the hair itself, but in the consecration signified by his letting it grow. For in the Old Testament the custom was the opposite of ours: anyone consecrated to God let his hair grow. Such a person was a Nazirite—not a Nazarene, but a Nazirite. Nazirite means one who is consecrated. And so...

Samson was consecrated, and he showed this by letting his hair grow. When Delilah came and cut it, the secret lay in his consecration. That consecration then ceased to be outwardly present, because his hair had been cut, and he lost his strength. Sacred History even tells us that when his hair grew again, he recovered that tremendous strength, because the outward sign of his consecration had reappeared. This is a profound matter. It is deeply significant and valuable to see it so clearly expressed in the Old Testament. How much more should this be true in the New Testament, even if we do not see it visibly? Why should we not recognize it there? The faithful Christian receives tremendous strength. As it has been aptly said, the catechumens entered through the main door...

were baptized, and went out through another door to martyrdom. Who could endure martyrdom without receiving through Baptism the strength that comes from consecration? Who could do it? You see, then, how exceedingly great these things are. And so there is the new name: Christian. I become a Christian. “What is your name?” they would ask the martyrs. “I am a Christian.” They would not give their other name. “Christian.”

“Where are you from?” “I am a Christian.” “Do you have a wife and children?” “I am a Christian.” “What work do you do?” “I am a Christian.” You may say, “What kind of answer is that?” It was given so that no other answer would reveal anything: You who have arrested me will not learn from me who my wife and children are, nor who the people are with whom I worship God.

“Who are your associates?” “I am a Christian,” and that brought the whole matter to an end. “I will torture you; I will tear you apart.” “I am a Christian.” And so he bore witness unto death. This declaration, “I am a Christian,” is a defining mark of the martyrs. Saint Cyril concludes the Eighteenth Catechesis with this greeting and welcome: “May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you...” May He give you what? Listen now: “a spirit of wisdom.” What a beautiful thing this spirit of wisdom is. Do you know what “a spirit of wisdom” means? It means the Holy Spirit, who brings you the gift of wisdom. My beloved...

this wisdom, and especially wisdom according to God, is a precious treasure. I would never desire riches or houses. Permit me to say it: I would rather wear trousers full of holes and worn-out shoes, if only I could possess this wisdom. Nothing can be exchanged for it. Today we have lost this divine wisdom. As I told you on a previous Sunday, the more a person loses inwardly, the more he piles up outwardly. Hence all the wealth, the costly clothes, and the expensive finery: inwardly, we have become empty. Therefore, let us ask God to give us this wisdom. Sometimes we say, “That person is wise.”

What a beautiful thing that is, what a beautiful title—the finest title on earth: a wise person. But it must be wisdom according to God, which, if a person wishes, may also be enriched by worldly learning. One may possess worldly wisdom as Saint Photios did: he was wise according to the world, but he was also wise according to God. The same was true of many figures in the history of the Church: Basil the Great, John Chrysostom, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and Saint Gregory of Nyssa were also wise according to the world. Origen too possessed worldly wisdom. Origen is not a Father but a teacher—and indeed much more could be said about him. Yet he also possessed wisdom from above. And so, may the Lord give you “a spirit of wisdom and revelation.”

When you read Holy Scripture, may the Scriptures be opened to you, and may God reveal Himself to your eyes and to your heart. For who, my beloved, gives his life unless he has received this gift of revelation, this spirit of revelation, and knows that the Lord Jesus Christ is true? Who gives his life? And yet millions of martyrs gave their lives precisely because they had received this spirit of revelation. “In the full knowledge of Him”—so that you may know Him, the Lord Jesus—“the eyes of your understanding being illumined”; and “may He preserve you,” may the Lord preserve you, “at all times,” always, “in deeds and words and...

thoughts”—in your deeds, your words, and your thoughts—“good thoughts,” forgive me; “to whom be glory, honor, and dominion, through our Lord Jesus Christ, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto all the endless ages of ages. Amen.” With this greeting and welcome Saint Cyril concludes his reception of the catechumens, those preparing for illumination. And now, with the grace and help of God, my beloved, in the few minutes remaining to us, we shall begin the First Mystagogical Catechesis. This was taught on the Monday of Bright Week to those who were now members of the faithful—no longer preparing for illumination, but Christians. Its title is:

“The Mystagogical Catecheses: The First Mystagogy, Addressed to the Newly Illumined.” Not those preparing for illumination, but the newly illumined—that is, those who had now become members of the faithful. Then follows a reading from the First Catholic Epistle of Peter, beginning with a particular passage, and so forth. Pay attention here. Before I continue, I want to tell you that some years ago—in 1982, to be precise—a small volume was published. Here it is. Its title is The Mystagogical Catecheses of Saint Cyril. This little book, published by the Apostoliki Diakonia, has the following special feature.

A hieromonk named Methodios Olympiotis translated the text of the five catecheses. As I told you, it is not a lengthy text; all five catecheses together amount to only a few pages. He produced a very vivid and beautiful translation, then added some comments on certain passages. This hieromonk published the work in Leipzig in 1766—some two hundred years ago, or rather, more than two hundred years ago.

This little book is very fine because it contains the original text, the translation on the facing page, and, on the right-hand page, the comments of that hieromonk, Methodios. The editor, Georgios Patronos, contributed material on the left-hand page. He wrote a fairly extensive and very good introduction to the book, covering the whole body of Saint Cyril’s work, not only the Mystagogical Catecheses, and he also added comments on the text on the left-hand page. You can purchase this book. I do not think it is very expensive, though I do not know; it is a small book. As I said, it was published in 1982 by the Apostoliki Diakonia. Let me tell you something about the translator.

There is also a point of more local interest. I shall read to you what I copied from the Great Pyrsos Encyclopedia. Methodios...

a hieromonk and parish priest of the Greek community in Leipzig from 1761 to 1766. He was born in the village of...

Agia in Thessaly. So, people of Agia, rejoice! What a rascal! The town Agia is spelled one way in Greek, while the ancient word agyia is spelled another. One might wonder whether the town’s name preserves some remnant of that word, for agyia means “street”; this is also why a child of the streets is called an agyiopaido.

Agyiopaida—street children. They have nothing to do with saints; they are children of the streets, agyiopaida. This expression was used in the past, but today, when we have flattened all distinctions, it is no longer heard. Well then, he was born in the village of Agia in Thessaly and was tonsured a monk at the Monastery of Saint Dionysios on Mount Olympus, near Litochoro—the old, ancient monastery high on Olympus. He then studied at the Athonias Academy. In Leipzig in 1766, he published an abridged translation of the catecheses of Cyril of Jerusalem, adding a brief interpretation of the Creed. After returning to his monastery, he died at over...

seventy years of age—somewhere past seventy-five. That is the translator. I read this to you because of its particular interest. Indeed, a man who wrote a short introduction—and who has unfortunately since reposed, having died young—says the following about the language...

the language of this hieromonk. Naturally, the work was not intended to be read in Europe; he prepared it for Greece, for the Greeks. Its language, he says, is not only vivid but exceedingly rich. And yet people say that darkness prevailed during the period of Ottoman rule and in the Middle Ages. It is today that darkness prevails, not then—if the supposedly uneducated Greeks of that time could understand...

such a text and such a translation. And I will not even dwell on another point concerning Makrygiannis, which I saw mentioned in a recent newspaper: that he uses some five or six thousand distinct words, of which three or four thousand occur only once. Today, if we had to write a text, we would not use six thousand distinct words. And who achieved this? The supposedly illiterate Makrygiannis. And who, if you please, would have read his Memoirs? The Greeks immediately after the Revolution of 1821. This shows you the truth of the matter. Today, if you give a student something to read by...

Papadiamantis, the prose writer from Skiathos, the student cannot understand him. It is indeed a correct observation that today we live in darkness and poverty—a poverty of language. But I shall leave that aside and now explain what “Mystagogical Catecheses” means. To help you understand it, I shall quote a comment by Methodios: “A mystagogical catechesis means instruction in and explanation of the principal Mysteries.” There it is in a single sentence. Do you remember what I told you one Monday about the Mystery, the initiate, and the related terms?

On an earlier Monday—I told you then that I would repeat a few things. I will not repeat them; it does not matter. I will say only that these are the catechetical lectures that explain to us the Mysteries of the Church that are necessary for our salvation.

Mystery; mystagogical catechesis. It is catechesis concerning the initiation of the faithful into the Mysteries of the Church. And as we know, of the seven Mysteries, three are indispensable; without them, a person cannot be saved. They are Baptism, the Mystery of Chrismation, and the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. And so he begins...

He begins as follows: “I have long desired, O true and dearly beloved children of the Church, to speak to you about these spiritual and heavenly Mysteries. But since I knew very well that sight is far more trustworthy than hearing, I waited for the present time, so that, having found you more ready to receive what is said because of your experience that evening, I might lead you by the hand into the brighter and more fragrant meadow of this Paradise.” To honor this translation—perhaps we shall use it only here—it says: “I have long desired to speak to you, O true and dearly beloved children of the Church, about these spiritual and heavenly Mysteries. Yet, knowing well that sight is far more trustworthy than hearing...”

It is better to see than merely to hear. “I waited for the present time, so that I might bring you into the brighter and more fragrant meadow of this Paradise, having learned from your own experience that you are now more ready to receive what I tell you.”

δεν γίνεται τελεία Θεία Λειτουργία και έχουμε την Προηγιασμένη Λειτουργία. Έτσι, μόλις ξεκίνησε η Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή, ο Άγιος Κύριλος άρχισε τα θέματά του με τους κατηχουμένους. Δηλαδή εκείνοι οι οποίοι ήσαν υποψήφιοι για το βάπτισμα, διότι ένας κατηχούμενος μπορούσε να μείνει και ένα και δύο και τρία και πέντε χρόνια· αν δεν είχε προκόψει, να μην τον βαπτίζουν. Εκείνοι λοιπόν οι οποίοι έπρεπε να βαπτιστούν, μπορούσαν να βαπτιστούν, αυτοί δέχονται αυτές τις κατηχήσεις. Βέβαια, όχι ότι μέναν τελείως αμύητοι τόσα χρόνια οι κατηχούμενοι, όχι, αλλά τώρα όμως γίνεται μια συστηματική προσφορά στο μήκος της Τεσσαρακοστής, και είναι αυτές οι ομιλίες. Ο μεν Άγιος Κύριλος τις έκανε μέσα στις 40 ημέρες. Εμείς δε τις κάναμε σε μερικά χρόνια, και μάλιστα αρκετά, νομίζω 8 χρόνια. Όταν δε θα εβαπτίζοντο, θα άκουγαν τα παρακάτω μαθήματα. Θα το δούμε στη συνέχεια. «Ενεστώσης δε λοιπόν της αγίας του Πάσχα ημέρας»· πλησιάζει, έρχεται, ήρθε η ημέρα του Πάσχα, «και της ημετέρας εν Χριστώ διά λουτρού παλιγγενεσίας, αύθις φωτιζομένοις διδαχθήσεσθε πάλιν τα πρέποντα, Θεού θέλοντος». Δηλαδή τώρα θα πρέπει να γίνει η βάπτισή σας. Πότε;

Θα λέγεσαι Ισραήλ. Μάλιστα, στην παρακάτω ιστορία, στο βιβλίο της Γενέσεως, αλλά και σε πλήθος άλλα σημεία, σε ολόκληρο το μήκος της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης, άλλοτε λέγεται Ιακώβ και άλλοτε λέγεται Ισραήλ. Και Ισραήλ είναι ο πρώτος. Κάποτε όμως Ισραήλ λέγεται και ολόκληρος ο λαός, γιατί πήρε ο λαός το όνομα από τον Ιακώβ. Ιακώβου. Βέβαια, αν θέλετε με ακρίβεια, έχουμε και τις άλλες φυλές, γιατί ο Ιακώβ είναι ο γενάρχης των 12 φυλών. Τι θα πει Ισραήλ; Ακούστε: ηγαπημένος, ηγαπημένος, ο αγαπημένος. Το πρώτο λοιπόν όνομα του λαού αυτού ήταν ο Αγαπημένος. Το καινούργιο όνομα ποιο είναι;
