Summary

Drawing on Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s eighteenth catechetical lecture, the speaker explains that the Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. The Church of Christ succeeds the rejected assembly of the Old Covenant and receives from God apostles, prophets, teachers, healings, forms of service, governance, tongues, virtues, and other spiritual gifts. Christians receive the Church’s spiritual dowry through prayer, fasting, vigilance, ascetic effort, and participation in divine grace, gaining courage through the unrestricted power of the Church and the Word of God.

My dear friends, we are still studying the catechetical lectures of Saint Cyril. We are now on the eighteenth lecture. Saint Cyril has spoken to us about the Church. But, as I have repeatedly told you, he is in a hurry and has not given us even the most basic account of certain things.

He said only a little about the Church being one, holy, and apostolic, and about its being catholic. We discussed these things so that we might have a fuller picture. He will continue for another paragraph or two and tell us a little more about the Church. Then we shall proceed to paragraph twenty-seven, which addresses the spiritual gifts within the Church—a subject of tremendous importance.

I wanted to tell you—and this is why I have insisted on the matter—that if many evils are taking place in our time, and I shall tell you what those evils are, it is because we are ignorant of the theology of the Church. In other words, we lack ecclesiological knowledge—not merely ecclesiastical knowledge, but ecclesiological knowledge, which means the theology of the Church. I mean the teaching that the Church is one, holy, catholic, apostolic, and so forth, as we discussed in our previous lessons. We must therefore learn what the Church is, because ignorance of the Church leads to distortions of the Church. Or, to put it more accurately, we faithful, as members of the Church, undergo these distortions.

Distortions. I shall mention one or two examples. You remember that in 1974 we had the events at the Polytechnic. I am not commenting on them either favorably or unfavorably; I am simply saying that this was an event of that time. After the Polytechnic events ended, people began asking—and who exactly was saying it, how should I know?—but they kept proclaiming at the top of their voices year after year: “Where was the Church when the Polytechnic uprising took place?” And now, to show you something that happened this very year, sometime around November, listen to this incident. I shall mention no names.

Some nuns had come to Athens on business. They were standing on a sidewalk in Chalandri, waiting for the bus. At least at that hour, the road was empty—not at all like the busy streets of central Athens. There was no one around. A young man approached and said to the nuns, “The Church blesses injustice.” They said nothing. He repeated it again and again. At last, one of the nuns said, “Of course the Church does not bless injustice.” When she said this, he replied, “Then why wasn’t the Church at the Polytechnic?” At that very moment, he snatched the glasses from one of them—both nuns wore glasses, and I know them personally—threw them on the ground, and moved to stamp on them. He was truly a demon-possessed man. The nuns began crying out for help. Just then, a car driven by a woman was passing, and they signaled for her to stop and take them away. Meanwhile, the bus also arrived, and the man fled. That is one incident, and a recent one. Now pay close attention. All this is connected with many other things, such as what we call cultural events.

We hold cultural events and say that the Church must take part in them. Let me give you an extreme example. It does not matter that things do not happen in Greece exactly as I am about to describe them, but in America, for instance. It is common knowledge; you all know it, and anyone who has been to America knows it even better.

In America, a church building also serves as a center for the Greek community. People meet there and hold their festivals. But they also organize many other events, such as dances and social evenings. These are held below the church—there are two levels: downstairs is a hall, and upstairs is the church proper. That is how they build them there. Churches in Greece are now also built this way, with something beneath the main church, either a second church or a hall.

They hold dances and parties so that Greeks may meet one another, marry other Greeks, and so forth. Just the other day, someone sent us advertisements for one such dance in his parish, to show us what goes on there. People wear masks and costumes, and much else besides. Now, the priest is not the one insisting that these things take place. The poor priest is an employee of the community, upon which he depends for his livelihood, because it is the community that pays him. So he is obliged, we might say, to go along with the antics of the authority over him, namely the community. And it is also well known—very well known—

that almost all the parish council members of the Orthodox churches in America are Freemasons. This gives you some idea of the tragic situation that exists abroad in our Orthodox churches. I believe you must have heard something about it. This happens because the Church is now being associated with other things, with alien concerns.

Cultural activities, entertainment, and who knows what else. But the Church is something entirely different. The Church exists to save the human person. What has it to do with the Polytechnic? What has it to do with politics? What has it to do with cultural events, dances, entertainments, or anything of that kind? What business does the Church have with these things? My dear friends, because we do not know what the Church is, we end up committing such acts of desecration.

And so people ask, “Where was the Church during the Polytechnic events?” What was the Church doing? It was doing what it was meant to do: saving people. What business did it have with an uprising? For it was an uprising, an attempt to overthrow the regime of that time. It was about... about... about... What business did the Church have with it? What business did it have? For this reason, I think and believe—and I expect you will agree with me—that only if we acquire ecclesiological knowledge, that is, knowledge of the theology of the Church, and truly live in accordance with it, only then, my dear friends, shall we be able at every moment to safeguard the Church, which in turn safeguards us. I am about to say something, though I do not know how you will understand it, how you will take it, or what you will make of it.

But I shall tell you. One of the profound and early Fathers of our Church, and a great teacher of ecclesiology, is Saint Ignatius the God-bearer. Of course, he did not sit down to compose a treatise on ecclesiology. Instead, as he journeyed to Rome to suffer martyrdom, he wrote several letters. He possessed the Spirit of God, and whenever the company stopped, he was able to write a letter. What wonderful letters they are! We could not write even five lines like them, even if we were perfectly comfortable in a seminary. Yet he wrote and dispatched letter after letter. He wrote several

to cities he had already passed. Thank you. He also wrote to cities along the road to Rome, or to cities he was still going to visit. For example, before he had even reached Rome, he sent his Epistle to the Romans, begging them not to intervene and prevent his martyrdom. As he says, “The one who has the Spirit of God will understand me—listen—he will understand what I am asking.” He pleaded with them not to intervene to prevent his martyrdom, because, he says, “I desire to become bread, ground by the teeth of the beasts. I seek my Christ.” This is mysticism.

“I thirst for the blood of my Christ. Every material-loving fire”—meaning every flame of desire that clings to material things—“has been extinguished within me; it no longer exists,” and so forth. It is a short letter, but it is a monument of mysticism. It relates to what we were just discussing in response to the questions. Yes, yes, it is astonishing. So he wrote these letters while journeying toward martyrdom.

His guards, he says, were ten soldiers, whom he calls “leopards.” Perhaps their regiment or unit bore an animal name of this sort, just as a unit might be called “the Wolves,” or perhaps their behavior was so savage that they truly were...

“Leopards”—that is the word he uses. Under these conditions, then, he wrote his letters, and they are profoundly ecclesiological. What does he say? “Where the bishop is, there is the Church.” But take careful note: the bishop stands in the place of Christ.

We analyzed some of these letters—not all of them—many years ago in a small group of young people. It must have been twenty or twenty-five years ago—probably twenty-five. We studied portions of the letters and discussed these things. But please pay attention. Today I would not dare to undertake an analysis of those letters. I would not dare; I could not. Many times I return to them because I want to look something up or find something, and I cannot. Why can I not? Because everything has been overturned, and now that it has been overturned, what can one draw from those texts? Yet this is their ecclesiology: there is no Church without the bishop. And he says...

“The priests serve after the pattern of the Apostles.” But the Apostles had love, and Christ loved His disciples. Today there are different attitudes, different ideas, different concerns, and different dimensions to everything, until a person no longer knows which way is up, as the saying goes. All this is grievous, my dear friends. Why has it happened? Because the people are ignorant of ecclesiology, but the clergy are also ignorant of it—or, if some are not ignorant, they have distorted it for their own advantage. The desire for petty glory, as they say, has entered in.

Petty glory—the pursuit of a little recognition—has entered in. Other things have entered as well and distorted the true image of ecclesiology. I ask you: is this not a cause for much weeping and many tears? But what can one say? I have told you these things. Throughout all our catechetical lessons, we have formed and presented an image of the Church. Those teachings continually direct us toward becoming conscious members of the Church. But one swallow does not make a spring, nor can five, ten, five hundred, or a thousand listeners bring about a spring. Even so, at some point we must understand what the Church truly is.

She is the Bride of Christ, blameless and spotless—the one who, as Scripture says, has no blemish, fault, reproach, or stain of any kind. This is the Bride of Christ, the Church, which we have dragged through the mud and brought low. But do not be mistaken. You may ask whether the Church always remains as I described her before. She is holy and pure; holiness is one of the Church’s essential attributes. We confess, “In one, holy Church.” But what does the great Vinedresser do? He cuts away the branches that defile His Church. Yes, for do not be mistaken. We often say, “But the Church has not excommunicated me.”

Christ has cut you off. He does not give you His grace. You cannot steal Christ’s grace. Christ is not merely human—that is, human in the limited sense of ordinary human nature—so that you could steal His grace and deceive God. His grace cannot be stolen. You may steal from me, a human being, but not from God. And so God withdraws, removes, and takes away His blessing. Many of us, both clergy—yes, yes—and laity, may appear to belong together as one Church, but in reality we are dead members. May God have mercy on us. God has withdrawn His grace. Here is one sign among many. Who says this? I think it is Saint John Climacus, or perhaps it is somewhere in the Philokalia; I do not remember. How can you tell whether you are experiencing God’s corrective discipline or His abandonment? There is punishment meant to correct us, and then there is the punishment of a person whom God has finally abandoned. Listen to one sign that is given. If you have sinned, and you repent of your sin, God disciplines and corrects you. If this is a corrective abandonment—meaning that God withdraws from you for your correction, not finally but for your correction—

you do not become angry. Instead, you come to your senses, collect yourself, and weep. But if God is no longer correcting you and has finally cast you off, then you become angry. So when something happens to you, you ought to say, “Oh, my God, You have remembered me and sent me a little sorrow.” Then you know that God has not abandoned you. God has not abandoned you, because what He is doing is meant for your correction. But when you begin to grow angry, to blaspheme, and to curse, then God has abandoned you. And that is a dreadful thing—the most dreadful thing of all.

That is the sign I wanted to mention. So you understand, my beloved, that these matters are extremely serious. If we knew what the Church is—I return to this again—if we truly knew what the Church is, we would exclaim, “What an honor it is to belong to the Church of Christ!” Yes, it is an honor. And God also gives us a dowry, because we are not merely poor, destitute members of the Church. The faithful Christian is rich, because he receives his dowry from God. And what is that dowry? I shall now read to you paragraph twenty-seven of Saint Cyril’s eighteenth catechetical lecture.

“For when the first was rejected, in the second, Catholic Church, as Paul says...” Which was the first? Of course, it has been a long time since we discussed this, so I shall remind you. It was the Church of Israel. God rejected it. That is why he says, “When the first was rejected.” The first was cast out, and the second came. Which is the second? It is the Church, now the Church of Christ.

I told you that when Christ said, “I am the true vine,” what does the word “true” mean? It means that there had been another vine which proved false. That was the Church of the Old Testament. It was rejected, rejected, and now the true vine has come.

It is Christ—that is, the Christian Church. “Therefore, when the first was rejected, in the second, Catholic Church, as Paul says...” And what does Paul say? “God has appointed” within the Church “first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles.” Is this not how he lists them, my beloved, in chapter twelve of his First Epistle to the Corinthians? “Then miracles, then gifts of healings, forms of assistance, forms of governance, various kinds of tongues, and every kind of virtue.” Every kind of virtue: “I mean wisdom and understanding,”

“chastity and justice, almsgiving and love for mankind, and patient endurance in persecutions, which cannot be overcome, or that patient endurance exercised through the weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left”—the weapons on the right and the left signify defense and attack—“which in former times, amid persecutions and tribulations, crowned the holy Martyrs with the varied and many-flowered crowns of patient endurance.” It crowned them with wreaths filled with many flowers.

“Rulers...” Is that everything? “If I wished to speak of all these things, I would need many hours to recount them.” If I were to explain them all, I would need many hours. I read the entire passage so that I might offer you a few words of my own, as best I can—that is, a brief explanation. Did you notice the spiritual gifts? Did you see them?

First of all, it is a spiritual gift that God appointed those who would govern the Church. He speaks of apostles, prophets, and teachers, and there is also the gift of governance. He uses the plural: “forms of governance.” Perhaps we have not realized that governing—that is, ruling and administering—is a spiritual gift. And if it is difficult, indeed exceedingly hard, to govern bodies, to govern people in merely outward matters—“Do not pass this way; go that way; do not walk on the pavement; follow the marked path,” along with civil laws and so forth—how much harder is it to become a governor of souls! One of the Fathers says—and it is also written in the Philokalia—“The hardest task of all”

“is to care for souls.” He says that the most difficult thing is to care for human souls. Is it easy? You can gain some idea of this from your own children: you must raise them, and throughout your whole life you must help them

to become upright human beings. What is it that you care for? Of course, you see that they are fed, shod, and clothed; there is no question of that. But is that where the real burden lies? Does it not lie in educating them and helping them develop good character? Is that a small struggle? God appointed two people, the father and the mother—He appointed two people.

They have helpers: the Church, teachers, priests; they have many helpers in raising perhaps two, three, or four children. Do you think it is easy? I say this to you who have experience of it, so that you may see just how difficult it is. To govern, then, is difficult, and especially to govern souls. It is a difficult task.

“Knowledge requires”—delta, epsilon, iota with a circumflex, tau, alpha, iota. It requires. The ending is tau-alpha-iota—excuse me—“requires instruction.” To learn anything, every art and science requires instruction: delta, epsilon, iota with a circumflex, tau, alpha, iota. Forgive me for going into such minute detail. It requires instruction. And the science of sciences and the art of arts, which is to become a Christian—that is what he calls the science of sciences and the art of arts—should this not also require instruction beforehand? He then says something more. This is why,

especially when someone becomes a clergyman but does not know how to cultivate the souls of his flock, we become, as he says, a laughingstock in the tavern, among those drinking wine, because we never became disciples and learned what we ourselves ought to be and how we ought to teach others what they should be. I have mentioned this only so that you may see the need for a teacher and the need for the gift of governance. Can just anyone guide souls? Is it easy? It requires tremendous patient endurance—tremendous endurance. You also know the familiar story.

It is the well-known story of Saint Isaac the Syrian, who is called the Bishop of Nineveh in Mesopotamia. He was an ascetic. They placed him under tremendous pressure to become a bishop. He did not want to—he refused again and again. In the end, however, they made him a bishop. The day after his consecration, two Christians who were in dispute came to him. One had lent money, and the other was unable to repay it. The lender said, “He is delaying the repayment of my money.” The bishop replied, “Have a little patient endurance. Just wait a little, and he will give you your money.” “No,” the man said, “I want it now.” Saint Isaac the Syrian said, “But what of the Gospel?” The man answered, “Am I supposed to listen to the Gospel now?”

Saint Isaac said, “If they will not listen to the Gospel, will they listen to me?” So he rose, left, and returned to the desert. There are, moreover, some much greater spiritual gifts. Certainly, I am not speaking of gifts of healing, the gift of being able to heal. That may seem to be a far greater gift.

Do I think it really is much greater? I do not. Although many people have probably said what I myself sometimes say: “Oh, my God, if only I had the gift to heal this person! I feel such compassion for him, and I do not know what to do for him.” I do not have the gift of healing. One can only offer a little more prayer; I have nothing else to give. But I would tell you something else.

Consider wisdom, understanding, and chastity. These are greater gifts: to possess the wisdom of God. If one also possesses worldly wisdom, wisdom from outside the faith, there is no harm in that—but above all, the wisdom of God. And to possess understanding. Understanding means having good sense. Wisdom is one thing, and understanding another. Understanding also includes discernment: having discernment and good sense, so that at every moment you know how you ought to act. And then there is chastity, which has a twofold meaning. In ancient Greek, chastity meant being sound in mind—that is, having good sense.

But the meaning of chastity later became more specific. It means purity: to be chaste, a pure and clean person, not running after sins such as those of the flesh and the like. Are these not beautiful spiritual gifts? When you meet a young person who possesses these gifts, would you not admire him? Are they not beautiful? My beloved, I would tell you to raise your children in this way and to teach them about these gifts. The Apostle Paul says, “I will show you”—he says—“that you should earnestly seek the greater gifts.” Speaking in tongues was not the greater gift; it was the last of the gifts. But he tells us to seek the greater gifts—that is, the better gifts, the very best.

And which is the greatest? He speaks of love. You may be unable to possess this gift or that one, but you can possess love. Love, of course, is a spiritual gift—I emphasize this—it is a gift. It comes from God; it is a divine uncreated energy that proceeds from God and comes to created beings. Ask God to give it to you. The sun sends its rays in every direction. If you are inside a house, especially down in its basement, and cannot see the sun, you have only to step outside, and you will experience and enjoy its light. In the same way, God sends His love in every direction. You have only to receive it.

Begin to receive it. And he says: “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels; though I have faith so great that I can move mountains; and though I have such self-sacrifice as the heroes have, and give up my body to be burned—if I have no love, I am nothing and gain nothing.” Love is patient; it does not boast; it is not puffed up; it bears all things, covers all things, and patiently endures all things. And now remain faith, hope, and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. Here, then, is a gift that all of us can possess.

Let no one complain or grieve that he received no dowry. My brother, you may have received none from your father or mother, but you must receive a dowry from the Church. In the old days—the good old days, even as recently as twenty or thirty years ago—good mothers had their daughters prepare their dowries. They embroidered and put their monograms on the pillowcases and sheets. Am I remembering correctly? I do not know whether today we still have our children prepare their dowries. Do you know what that meant? They worked for their dowries. So it is here as well. Do you want to receive the Church’s dowry? Then understand that you will have to labor and sweat

in prayer, in ascesis, in the spiritual life; and then the spiritual gifts will come. Recall a troparion common to many venerable saints: “Through fasting, vigil, and prayer, you received heavenly gifts.” “Through fasting” is in the dative, as are “through vigil” and “through prayer.” In other words, by vigil, fasting, and prayer, “you received heavenly gifts.” You see? It requires labor. But you may say to me, “How can it be a gift if it requires labor?” And who told you that God gives His gifts as though He were someone with money in his pocket, scattering it along the road?

I gave you the example earlier: a mother gives her daughter a dowry, but she also makes her work for it.

A father may also give his son fields, but he takes him out to work those fields—to dig and sow—or he trains him in a trade at the family shop. That is how you will receive the shop; that is how you will receive the fields. No—you must work. Such is the beautiful dowry of the Church. Therefore, let no one grieve that he has no dowry. I shall take up one more point from this long paragraph, for how could I analyze everything? Almsgiving is a spiritual gift. Some people have very merciful hearts and always want to show mercy. Not everyone possesses this.

I shall take up just one point, because if we were to analyze all these things, as I said, we would need much more time—and the saint is eager to move on.

Thank you. I too must hurry. The point is this. He says that “the Holy Catholic Church alone possesses unrestricted power throughout the whole world.” Wherever rulers, kings, and so forth may exercise authority, their power is limited. It is confined within the boundaries of the place they govern—the city, the mayor’s jurisdiction, the prefect’s jurisdiction. But the Church—learn this as well, and this is why I linger on this point—possesses unrestricted power wherever she may be. There is a proverb: “If the ox only knew its own strength…” and then it continues.

If Christians knew the power of the Church, they would yield before nothing. If a preacher of the Word of God knew the power of the Church and the power of the Word of God—which breaks bones and overturns the whole earth—if he knew that power, he would put it to use. But we do not know the power of the Word of God. This Word of God, which is “sharper than any two-edged sword,” as the Apostle Paul says in Hebrews, is sharper than a double-edged sword. It cuts through to the marrow of the bones and divides the joints. So mighty is the Word of God—if only we knew the Word of God.

There was once a man who stood before political rulers, crowned kings, and emperors. It was John Chrysostom, and he stood there and said, “It is not lawful for you,” just as Saint John the Baptist said to Herod. John Chrysostom also said this to the notorious Eudoxia, who had erected her own statue and held festivals—yes, festivals—while the foolish people of Constantinople danced around Eudoxia’s statue. “It is not lawful for you. You are not permitted to do these things, because they are pagan practices. You are not permitted.” And who said this? You know that John Chrysostom had a weak voice. You also know that it was John Chrysostom who introduced the pulpit.

He devised the pulpit so that it stood somewhere near the middle of the church, allowing him to be heard, because John Chrysostom had a weak voice and there were no loudspeakers in those days. Yet this frail, soft-spoken man made his word prevail, because it was not his own word; it was the Word of God. If we knew the power of the Word of God and the power of the Church, the faithful would overturn the whole world, just as they did during the first three centuries. They overturned Rome. They came up from the catacombs to the surface of the earth and overcame the emperor, the Senate, and everyone else, because the powers of the Church were astonishing—and this without bloodshed.

Not according to the pattern of revolution familiar to us, in which people take up rifles and kill. No, not in that sense. Through the Word of God and the power of the Church, the Church brought the Roman Empire to Christ and prevailed. You see the power of the Church. Do not forget it. We need this truth. The Church has power.

But let us leave this paragraph and turn to paragraph twenty-eight: “In this Holy Catholic Church, if we are properly instructed and live rightly, we shall possess the Kingdom of Heaven and inherit eternal life.” If, he says, within this One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, we are taught rightly and conduct ourselves rightly—that is, if our manner of life is right—then we shall possess the Kingdom of Heaven and inherit eternal life.

We shall possess eternal life and inherit the Kingdom of Heaven if we are taught rightly. What does “taught rightly” mean? It has two dimensions. First, “rightly” means in an Orthodox manner; second, it means learning the full content of our faith—everything the Church teaches. Let us not say, “This does not interest me, and neither does that.” Let us not remain only with the Ten Commandments, intending merely to keep them and nothing more. We must learn as much as we can about the content of our faith. My beloved, what a pitiable situation it is when we have people at the point of death and, as you prepare them through Holy Confession, you tell them

not to be afraid or sorrowful, because we believe in the resurrection of the dead and shall rise again with our bodies, only to hear them say, “This is the first time I have heard that. I did not know it. I do not believe it.” Or they may say, “Well, if you say so.” If I say so? Had they never encountered it anywhere until now? And how much is that poor person to blame, if indeed he is to blame, when he is departing this life without knowing that he will rise again? We who have been entrusted with teaching do not speak about these things or provide catechesis. I do not know what account we shall give to God, my beloved. When we choose to become clergy, we shall often have to give a fearful account before God. I have told you: I am afraid and tremble. I tell you this without hypocrisy; truly, I mean it. God overlooks nothing at all. And so I wish to tell you here that a person must be instructed in an Orthodox manner and must live rightly within the Church—that is, he must acquire an ecclesial ethos.

An ethos. This is what “living rightly” means: one must acquire an ecclesial ethos. I cannot regard it as an ecclesial ethos when a woman enters a shop and unleashes a torrent of abuse at the shopkeeper because she thinks he has cheated her in some way. Nor can I imagine that one of our Christian gentlemen possesses an ecclesial ethos when he uses obscene language. When he speaks—allow me to give a small example—he says, “Yeah, that’s it. Hey, you, get over here!” I once overheard a poor girl, a high-school student, speaking on the telephone to a relative and repeatedly addressing the person with a rude “Hey, you!” A young woman speaking like that? Even when a man speaks that way, it reveals a poor ethos. But a young woman? You may tell me that I am splitting hairs, but I am not.

As the saying goes, “The lion is known by its claw.” When you see a claw, you recognize that it belongs to a lion. In the same way, when you see such behavior and hear someone speaking so rudely, you recognize what lies beneath it. You may say to me, “Father, if only you knew what else goes on!” I do know what else goes on, but I am giving you the simplest example. At home, a husband may speak this way to his wife, or the wife to her husband, or children may speak this way to their parents: “Come on, Mom! Hey, Mom!”

This is how I understand it: such behavior is not the ethos of a Christian. You must correct your tongue and speak graciously to everyone—to your parents, your siblings, your neighbor, and all others. You may sometimes become angry, but you must restrain your tongue and not say what should never be said. Otherwise, what are we doing? I am certainly not saying that we are free to become angry or that anger is permitted. I gave it only as an example, because I am speaking now about the tongue. We must cultivate our speech and our character—our ecclesial ethos. What do you think? If I am conscious that I belong to the Church, can I speak in any other way?

May I dishonor my father or my teacher by displaying my ignorance or bad behavior? May I dishonor the Church through bad conduct or ugly speech? Can I do that? Is it permitted? Certainly not. Therefore, my beloved, how can I put it? Let us cultivate ourselves; let us be refined. I have heard countless exchanges among fellow Christians, monks, clergy, bishops, and laypeople whose conversations sound like—what else can I say?—a noisy marketplace. I mean no offense to the marketplace; there are excellent people there. I have told you this before, but I use it as a familiar expression. It is not right for people to speak that way. This, then, is what it means to “live rightly.” The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy:

“You saw my conduct; you saw how I lived. Take care that you also live in the same way.” Is that not what he says? “In conduct, in faith,” and so forth. In this way a person can gain the Kingdom of God. “We shall possess the Kingdom of Heaven,” he says, “and inherit eternal life.” And for the sake of both—for the Kingdom of Heaven and for eternal life—take note of this: “We do all things so that we may receive these from the Lord.” We do everything in order to arrive there.

We do everything in order to arrive there, to attain it and enjoy it. “For our aim concerns no small matters.” My brother, you are not a Christian for the sake of small things. You are a Christian for great things—great things indeed. “What we strive for is eternal life.” The object of all your striving is eternal life. It is not to earn some money, merely to be a good person, to secure a good position in life, or to be respected by others. Those things are secondary or even tertiary. The first and greatest purpose is to arrive there and attain eternal life.

If we gain everything else but lose this, then we have gained nothing. “Therefore, in the profession of faith we are taught, after ‘and in the resurrection of the flesh,’ that is, of the dead, about which we have spoken, to believe also ‘in eternal life,’ for which we Christians struggle.” Eternal life is the goal of our struggle as Christians. Here I would like to make a brief comment—if indeed it can be brief. What is the purpose of Christianity? What is it? My dear friends, most of our Christians do not know the purpose of Christianity.

They think—and this comes from ignorance both of the Church and of theology in general—that I am a Christian simply in order to be a good person. Woe to us if we have reached the point of saying, “I am a Christian so that I may be a good person.” Woe to us! Because of our ignorance, we have lost sight of Christianity’s final end. Christianity has a purpose, a final end that we must attain. Yet many people do not wish to look toward that end, or do not wish to know it, or simply have no interest in it. They are interested only in what they can see, in what lies immediately before them. Christianity has a final end, and that end is eternal life.

Eternal life means seeing God, because this theoria, this divine vision of God, is eternal life, and from that vision of God flows all blessedness. Perhaps you would be disappointed if you read in the Gospel according to John a passage about eternal life that gives what might be called a definition of it. Yes, a definition—and perhaps that definition would disappoint you: “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” You might ask, “What is this eternal life? Let us see what it is and what it consists of.” And John the Evangelist says that it is to come

to believe and to see—now we believe, but then we shall see—the person of God and Him whom He sent, Jesus Christ. The word used there is “know”: “that they may know You.” In theology, and especially in John the Evangelist, this word “know” does not mean mere, bare knowledge. Here, knowledge means theoria, divine vision, and participation in that vision of God. What, then, is the final purpose? Eternal life—that is, the vision of the person of God. This is why John the Evangelist says in the third chapter of his First Epistle: “Little children, it has not yet been revealed what we shall be.”

It has not yet been revealed what we shall be. “But we know that when He is revealed”—the word “when” here is not conditional but temporal—“when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.” We shall be like Him, and we shall see Him as He is. Notice what he said: “We shall see Him.” This is what knowledge means in John the Evangelist: we shall see Him “as He is,” in His glory.

“As He is”—this is the final purpose. The way by which I reach that final purpose is Christianity; it is the Gospel. And John the Evangelist expresses it in a few words in the continuation of the passage I quoted to you: “Everyone who has this hope”—the one who possesses this hope—“purifies himself,” purifies his own self, “just as He is pure.” But to “purify myself” means that I have entered upon the path of keeping the commandments of Holy Scripture, the Word of God. I purify myself, then, so that I may reach this final, ultimate purpose, which is the Kingdom of God. What shall we say, my dear friends, as we conclude here our subject concerning the Church, so that, God willing, next time we may speak about eternal life and the passages that establish this teaching? For do not forget that eternal life is an article of faith recorded in the Creed: “and the life of the age to come,” as we say.

“I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come. Amen.” So let us come to know the Church, and let us become living members of the Church—living and holy members of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. May the Lord bless you.

στην προσευχή, στην άσκηση, στην πνευματική ζωή, και τότε έρχονται και τα χαρίσματα. Θυμηθείτε ένα τροπάριο, μάλιστα, που είναι κοινό για πολλούς οσίους, ότι «νηστείᾳ, ἀγρυπνίᾳ, προσευχῇ, οὐράνια χαρίσματα λαβών». Αυτό το «νηστείᾳ» είναι δοτική, «ἀγρυπνίᾳ» είναι δοτική και «προσευχῇ» είναι δοτική, δηλαδή με την αγρυπνία, με τη νηστεία, με την προσευχή, «οὐράνια χαρίσματα λαβών», αφού έλαβες ουράνια χαρίσματα. Βλέπετε; Θέλει κόπο. Μα θα μου πείτε: «Τι χάρισμα είναι να έχει κόπο;» Και ποιος σας είπε ότι ο Θεός δίνει τα χαρίσματα έτσι, σαν κάποιον που θα έχει στην τσέπη του λεφτά και θα τα σκορπούσε στον δρόμο;

Για μένα, έτσι το καταλαβαίνω. Έτσι το καταλαβαίνω. Δεν είναι ήθος χριστιανού. Εάν δεν διορθώσεις τη γλώσσα σου, να μιλάς όμορφα προς πάσα κατεύθυνση, και στους γονείς σου και στα αδέλφια σου και στον γείτονα κτλ. Μπορεί κάποτε να θυμώσεις· θα κρατήσεις τη γλώσσα σου, δεν θα πεις πράγματα που δεν πρέπει. Αλλιώτικα τότε τι κάνουμε; Όχι βεβαίως ότι μπορούμε να θυμώνουμε, ότι επιτρέπεται. Παράδειγμα το είπα, μιλάω τώρα για τη γλώσσα. Δηλαδή πρέπει να καλλιεργήσουμε τη γλώσσα μας, το ήθος μας, αυτό, ρε, το εκκλησιαστικόν ήθος. Τι νομίζετε; Όταν έχω την αίσθηση ότι ανήκω στην Εκκλησία, μπορώ να μιλώ αλλιώτικα;
