Summary
The Church is apostolic because, as the New Jerusalem is founded upon the Twelve Apostles, she is historically grounded in their witness to Jesus Christ. The apostolic proclamation of Christ’s death, burial, Resurrection, and appearances is confirmed jointly by Old Testament prophecy and eyewitness testimony. The Divine Liturgy and Holy Eucharist embody Apostolic Tradition concretely, entrusting the living Christ and His Church to each generation.

We are still in the eighteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, which also speaks about the Church. As we have seen—and I repeat this every time, though this is the last time, since we are now finishing this subject—Saint Cyril, because he was pressed for time, mentioned only one attribute of the Church.
The Church is catholic. He passed over the others—not, of course, because his catechumens were unaware of them, since all these things had already been taught. This was, we might say, a final review of the catechetical lectures, the last instruction given shortly before Baptism. The other three attributes remained, and so, taking the opportunity...
As we speak about the Church, we are now going beyond Saint Cyril’s text so that we may also examine her other three attributes. We have seen that the Church is catholic and that she is one; and last time we said that she is holy. It remains for us to consider her final attribute: the Church is apostolic. In the twenty-first chapter, the Evangelist John describes the Jerusalem above through many images of astonishing beauty and splendor. Among the details he gives, he says the following:
“The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb.” Here, of course, the city is the Church, the Jerusalem above, which, he says, comes down from God. Why does it come down, and how, and what does this mean? It shows, of course, that the Kingdom of God is uncreated. As the Apostle Paul says in Hebrews, its architect and builder is God. It is the city that has foundations—
real foundations. For everything founded in this world will one day grow old and pass away. Natural disasters may destroy a building or an entire city. Have not many cities throughout the world been leveled by earthquakes? Their foundations were of no help; they made no difference and played no saving role. Why? Because those foundations are human. But when God lays a foundation, no one can uproot it. Thus, as the Evangelist John says, the Kingdom of God has twelve foundations. What does “twelve foundations” mean? These are all images—I tell you again, they are images. Thank you.
When we put up a building, it has one foundation. So how can there be twelve foundations, with the name of one of the twelve Apostles on each? There are twelve Apostles and twelve foundations, and the text clearly calls them “the Apostles of the Lamb.” Therefore, these are the historical persons of Christ’s twelve disciples. Their being historical persons is important to us: they are not an abstract idea, but a concrete reality. Since the Apostles form the foundation of the Church, this means that the Church is apostolic, because she is founded upon the Apostles.
She is apostolic. We proclaim this final attribute in the Creed: “I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.” It is exceedingly important, as you will see. But what does it mean for the Church to be apostolic? Fundamentally, it means two things: the apostolicity of her teaching and the apostolicity of her succession. You will see how vital these are. Without them, we cannot even speak of the Church—not at all. If they are absent—allow me to say it—the Church is destroyed, because her apostolicity is gone. You will see this as we continue. The apostolicity of the teaching means that the Apostles received from the Lord Jesus everything they saw and heard, together with every commandment they were given, and handed it on to the Church. More than this: they received Christ and handed on Christ. When we say “Christ,” we do not mean merely the name of Christ, nor a bare Christ who is Christ in name alone—
an empty Christ, which would mean nothing at all. We do not use “Christ” as a mere expression. No. They hand on Christ Himself, as you will see. For it is well known that the Lord left no written record. The Lord did not write a single word. Who, then, could preserve for us what Christ said, what Christ did, and who Christ was? The Apostles recorded for us what they had received. Yet, I say once again, beyond what was written down in the Gospels—
there are, of course, also the Epistles. In them the teaching of Christ is preserved, and so forth—not chiefly the account of His life, but above all His teaching.
Above all! Yet what they hand on is not merely the written record of the New Testament. I will say it once again—and we shall return to this at the end of our subject—it is the living Christ Himself. Not the letter of His teaching, but the living Christ Himself. Do you know why Christ wrote nothing? Why did He not write? Listen, those of you who do not know. Great teachers, even outside Christianity, have written books.
They left written works behind. But Christ is the Word (Logos) of God, and the word is spoken. God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Who spoke? God spoke. Who, then, creates the light? That act of speaking—God’s “He said”—is the Word. The Father spoke; that is, He sent His Word to create. God said, “Let there be light.” And somewhere in the Old Testament, in the Psalms, it says, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were established.” How were the heavens established? By the word of the Lord.
Who is the Lord here? The Father. Who is the Word? The Son. Therefore, the spoken word must be preserved. As greatly as we honor Holy Scripture, and as much as we study the famous written letters—even to the point of wearing glasses because we have spent our whole lives over books—writing is, incredible though it may sound, a consequence of our fallen condition. There should never have been any need for a written record. God made the human person to hear and remember, with everything belonging to the realm—
of the spoken word. John Chrysostom says this in his commentary on the Gospel according to Matthew, in his first homily. He says, in effect: “O man, is it not enough that we have Holy Scripture?” Its very necessity reflects our fallen state, because we cannot preserve the spoken word. We cannot. We forget it and distort it. Imagine if nothing from the Gospels had been written down and everything had passed from mouth to mouth. What would have happened? What would have become of it? The Lord also told us, “Take care how you hear.” Our failure to attend to how we hear is a consequence of the Fall. So it is not enough that, because we lost the spoken word and its power, we were left with Holy Scripture as a remedy for our fallen condition; you do not even read Holy Scripture. The need for a written Scripture reflects our fallen state, yet Scripture is also what remains to preserve what we ought to have preserved through the spoken word. I have told you this so that you may understand why Christ wrote nothing.
So...
So the disciples wrote. If you will allow me, just two brief points. The Apostles wrote after Pentecost, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. They wrote. Christ told them, “The Holy Spirit will remind you of everything I have said to you and will teach you what I did not tell you.” There were many things Christ did not tell them.
“I still have many things to say to you,” the Lord says, “but you cannot bear them now.” You cannot carry them; you cannot retain them. Imagine that we are sitting in a hall while someone speaks continuously about lofty, important, profound, and heavenly matters. How much of it could we retain?
What could we retain? “But you cannot bear them now.” You cannot. The Comforter, the Holy Spirit, will come and remind you of everything I told you, and He will also teach you those things that I did not tell you. Let me make a brief aside here. Where are those who say, “But Christ did not say that”? The Apostles said it. And yet not everything the Apostles said was written down either; what remained is called Apostolic Tradition. Indeed, when we speak of the apostolic Church, we really mean Apostolic Tradition, which is not confined, as we might suppose, to Holy Scripture.
It is also found outside Holy Scripture, as, for example, in what we call the Didache of the Twelve Apostles. What is the Didache of the Twelve Apostles? It reflects apostolic teaching. We shall examine this a little later. The Apostles, then, hand on everything they heard, saw, tasted, felt, grasped, and touched concerning the Word of Life, Jesus Christ. How does the opening of the Evangelist John’s First Epistle read? “That which was from the beginning, which we have seen with our eyes.” Notice the apparent repetition: that which we have seen with our own eyes.
It seems repetitive, because a person naturally sees with the eyes, so the words “with our eyes” might appear unnecessary. Yet they are not unnecessary, because when we give testimony, we say, “We saw it with our own eyes.” We still use that expression in modern Greek: “We saw it with our own eyes.” That which we saw with our eyes; “that which we heard with our ears”; and “that which our hands touched.” Christ was physically touched. “Come,” He says, “look at Me and touch Me. I am not a spirit; a spirit does not have flesh and bones.” All this is “concerning the Word of Life.” And we proclaim these things to you. This is what follows in the opening of the First Epistle of Saint John.
We proclaim these things to you; therefore, we hand them on to you, and this is tradition. Because the Apostle hands them on, it is Apostolic Tradition, so that you may have life and may possess the same joy that we possess. This is Apostolic Tradition. The Apostle Paul writes the following. You know that the Apostle Paul did not see Jesus during His earthly life; nevertheless, he saw Jesus glorified. In First Corinthians he writes: “Now I make known to you, brethren, the Gospel which I preached to you.” I am making known to you the Gospel, the very Gospel that I proclaimed to you.
“Which you also received, in which you also stand, and by which you are also saved. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received,” and so on. We shall look at the rest shortly. Pay attention. What I proclaimed to you as the Gospel is what you received, the Gospel in which you have taken your stand and by which you are saved. Notice this progression. The Apostle proclaims the Gospel, and I receive the Gospel—that is, I hear it and receive what is handed down to me.
In the end, I accept it. First I hear it, then I receive it; afterward I stand firm in it—that is, I put it into practice—and finally, through it, I am saved. This is the progression of Apostolic Tradition: it begins with what the Apostle gives me, which he himself received, and ends with my salvation. If this were not so, I could not be saved. The Apostle therefore says, “For I delivered to you”—I handed it down to you. Delivered, tradition: do you hear the connection? I delivered; therefore, tradition. Christ Himself is what is handed down. Not Christ in name only—no, no, pay attention. “For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received.” That which I myself received. And what was that?
“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.” The Scriptures come to demonstrate and confirm the events. Someone might say, “Perhaps our senses deceived us. Perhaps we did not understand correctly.” I have told you before that the Scriptures—that is, the prophecies of the Old Testament—and the events of the New Testament are like water and cement powder. Water is fluid and soft, while cement is powder: blow on it, and it scatters. But join the water
to the cement powder, and see what you have: a rock, a stone. Try to break it. In the same way, if we had only the prophecies and not the events, the prophecies would remain unsupported. If we had the events but not the prophecies, people would tell us, “You were deceived.” But now we have both the events and the prophecies, and together they provide confirmation. Thus faith is made firm. Some people say, “Believe and do not investigate.” To begin with, that is not written in Holy Scripture. Where are those who say, “Believe and do not investigate”? Nothing could be more foolish, because we must search the Scriptures. We even have a commandment from the Lord to search the Scriptures.
We must establish the truth of the events. Of course, this requires a good and sincere disposition, not bad faith of the kind that says, “You will not convince me, even if you convince me.” A little further on, then, the Apostle Paul says that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures: “He died for our sins,” and “He was buried, and He was raised on the third day”—He rose on the third day—“according to the Scriptures.” If the brief phrase “according to the Scriptures” were not important, it would not have been included in the extremely concise Nicene Creed. Do we not say “according to the Scriptures” in the Creed? This, then, is a crucial and important point.
“And He appeared to Cephas”—now come the witnesses; Cephas is Peter—“then to the Twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain”—most of them were still alive—“until now,” meaning until the time when the Apostle wrote his First Epistle to the Corinthians. “But some have also fallen asleep”; some had died. We can therefore see what Apostolic Tradition is and how firmly bound together this Tradition is. It is not something vague or haphazard. The Apostle Paul also writes to the Corinthians, “Hold fast the traditions just as I delivered them to you.” Hold fast means keep them firmly, not merely possess them.
Keep firmly what I delivered to you. And what had he delivered to them? The things he does not write in his epistle. Pay attention: the things he does not write in his epistle. Let me give you a small example. When writing to the Thessalonians about the Antichrist, he says, “Do you not remember that when I was in your city I told you about the Antichrist?” I told you these things. What he writes there about the Antichrist is certainly sufficient, yet it is brief for that particular subject, because he is reminding them of what he had already told them. He told them much more, but those things were not written down, and we do not possess them because they were not preserved.
You see, then, that a great many things were not written down, even by the Apostles. They were handed down. How? Orally. And we find this at the heart of the living praxis, the active life, within the Church. At the very heart of that praxis is nothing less than the Divine Liturgy, in which the living Christ is handed down to us. The living Christ—not Christ in name only, but the living Christ. I am not explaining this fully yet; I shall speak of it again a little further on. The Lord also says to the bishop of the Church in Thyatira, in the Apocalypse 2:25, “Hold fast what you have.”
“Until I come.” Hold fast what you have. You know the force of the verb “to hold fast.” It is related to words meaning mighty and strong; we also call the Lord Almighty. It is a powerful verb. It means that what I have in my hands, I grip firmly and possess securely. He does not simply say, “Make use of what you have.” He says, “Hold fast.” Pay attention to the strength of this verb. “Until I come.” What do we observe here? First of all, He speaks in the plural: “what you have.”
He is addressing the angel of the Church in Thyatira—that is, the bishop—and the bishop is one person. Yet He does not say to the bishop, “What you have, hold fast.” He says, “What you all have,” because the whole Church is implied. The bishop does not by himself constitute the Church; the faithful are also the Church. Neither can the bishop exist without the people, like a king without a kingdom, nor can the people exist without the bishop. That is why He says in the plural, “Hold fast.” The whole Church, including the faithful, must hold fast. Hold fast to what? To what you have. And what is it that you have?
It is what was handed down to you. By whom? We are in the first century after Christ: it was handed down by the Apostles who proclaimed the Gospel to you. This is what you have; hold fast to it. Until when? “Until I come.” Christ, then, is coming again. And we must hold fast to what He gave us—His Gospel, Apostolic Tradition—until He comes again. Until then, we must hold fast to Christ. Christ Himself, therefore, is the Tradition handed down to us. Moreover, the Apostles handed it down as the first to become god-men by grace.
Every believer becomes a god-man by grace, whereas Christ is the God-Man by nature. The Apostles hand down to the Church everything that was entrusted to them. Pay attention to these two words: “in all things.” Notice this carefully. I mentioned it again recently. When the priest elevates the Precious Gifts during the Divine Liturgy, he speaks after having referred very briefly, in just a few lines, to the principal moments in the life of Christ: the great events of the Crucifixion, the Burial, the Resurrection, and the Ascension. These are the very events that accomplish our salvation.
“Thine own of Thine own we offer unto Thee, in all things and for all things.” The words “in all things” express Apostolic Tradition. They mean: exactly as You commanded us. It is as though someone were to say, “Dear Director, I carried out everything you told me, in every detail”—that is, exactly as you said. These words, “in all things,” therefore express the precision and exactness of Apostolic Tradition. And what do they refer to here? To the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the Mystery celebrated in the Divine Liturgy. This helps you understand what Apostolic Tradition truly is.
I must also tell you that the Apostles contributed nothing of their own.
They had no desire to introduce innovations in anything. They handed down what they had received. You heard what the Apostle Paul says: “I delivered to you what I received.” The Apostle Paul, for example, seeks nothing other than to be found a faithful steward, a steward of the Mysteries of God. An Apostle—every Apostle—does not innovate. And every successor of the Apostles, namely the bishops, priests, and deacons, must not innovate either. We must hand down Christ exactly as we received Him. The true Apostle, therefore, introduces no innovations.
Neither does the bishop, the priest, or the deacon who serves the Lord throughout the ages. What does it mean to say, “I do not innovate”? It means that I add nothing of my own, but hand down only what I received. The Fathers, of course, also hand down what they received. Otherwise they would be neither Fathers nor Saints. You may say that each Father has written something differently from another, but pay attention: they simply work with the material already given, each according to the spirit and the gift he has received. They develop the existing material in breadth and depth, but they do not innovate. What, then, does it mean to innovate?
It means introducing things that are not written in Holy Scripture, or beginning to philosophize and turning the Word of God into philosophy. That would indeed be an innovation, but then I would no longer have an Apostle or a genuine continuator of Apostolic Tradition. The Apostles, therefore, did not innovate in this sense. And woe to me, sitting here and telling you these things, if I were to seek originality. I shall tell you only what is written. If I have the time, the ability, and the gift God gives me, I may dig more deeply and speak more broadly—but always upon the foundation of the material already given. Always upon the existing material.
You know that it is a great temptation for people to want to be original, especially for intellectuals. They think, “I will not say what someone else has said; I will say something of my own.” But then I am no longer an Apostle, nor am I holding fast to Apostolic Tradition so that I may hand it down to the coming generation, the generation still being formed, as the Psalm says.
How subtle and delicate a matter Apostolic Tradition is. This is why I told you that the Apostle Paul seeks only to be found a faithful steward. Faithful means trustworthy. A steward of what? Of the Mysteries of God. That is what he desires, and he asks the faithful to pray that he may be such a steward. The Apostle also gives Timothy an emphatic command: “You therefore, my child—”
“My child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus; and the things you heard from me in the presence of many witnesses”—what you heard from me before many witnesses. Pay attention: this means within the Church. “Entrust these things to faithful men.” Hand them down as a sacred deposit to faithful men, “who will also be able to teach others.” Do you see? You heard these things from me and received them before witnesses, within the Church. Now you, in turn, must entrust them—hand them down—to faithful men. Faithful men.
They must not be unstable people, driven and tossed about, lifted like feathers in the wind. They themselves must be capable, in turn, of entrusting these things to others. This pattern—“I received it, I hand it on to you, you hand it on to others, and they to still others”—what is it? It is Tradition. Which Tradition? Apostolic Tradition. And in his First Epistle—for what I just quoted to you is from his Second—he says: “O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you.” What is this deposit? It is the covenant, the great and solemn covenant.
If you wish to see what it is, it is what we encounter at every ordination. You have heard of it and know it; you have heard it from me as well. The priest is a steward of the Mysteries of God, and the bishop is so above all, because he possesses both the right and the authority to ordain, whereas the priest does not. There are many reasons for this. Pay attention. Immediately after the consecration of the Precious Gifts—his ordination having taken place before their consecration so that he may take part in it—the newly ordained priest places his hands crosswise.
This recalls exactly how the faithful received Holy Communion in the ancient Church. They received the Lamb, and, as Saint Cyril says in one of his five Mystagogical Catecheses—and may God count us worthy to complete our work of catechesis—you make your hands like a throne and receive Christ there: the Body of Christ, Christ Himself. So what do we do? We hold our hands in this way, and the bishop places the whole Lamb—the Body of Christ—upon them. Soon the Church will partake of this Lamb and will herself constitute the Body of Christ. The newly ordained priest then goes behind the Holy Table.
The remainder of the Divine Liturgy is said, and then the priest is summoned again so that the bishop may take the Lamb from his hands and place it back upon the holy diskos. As he entrusts the Lamb to him, he says:
Ah, wonderful! Truly wonderful! “Receive this deposit entrusted to you,” and so forth. Then he continues: “And guard it until the Second Coming of Christ.” This means: Receive the deposit entrusted to you. What is it? Christ Himself. For Christ is the defining mark. And more than that: the Church is His Body. Take Christ; take the Church into your hands, and guard her.
Guard this deposit until the Second Coming of Christ—which, for you, means until your death. Can you imagine someone receiving the Lamb and then growing tired? Sometimes a newly ordained priest is overcome with emotion, and someone goes to support him, just as the hands of Moses were supported by two assistants so that the Israelites might prevail over the Amalekites. They hold him up for a while. But can you imagine him taking the Lamb and throwing it to the ground? And yet this is precisely what we do later in our priestly life. We deny Christ, cast Him down, and trample upon Him. How? In a thousand ways, which this is neither the time nor the place to describe.
It is a fearful thing. We receive Christ Himself. This is the deposit entrusted to us—the real Christ. I told you earlier that when we receive Christ, who is the Christ of Tradition, the Apostolic Tradition, we do not receive Him merely in name; we truly receive Christ Himself. There He is. This is what I was telling you before. Thus we can see what this deposit really is. My beloved, it is a fearful thing—as far as a person is able to comprehend it. I now return to the subject of Apostolic Tradition—or rather, I continue with it. The book known as The Didache of the Twelve Apostles is familiar to us. How many times have I referred to it? Altogether, my beloved, it is only three leaves, six little pages. Yet its discovery was the most important discovery of the last century.
The most important in this particular field, of course—the field of ancient texts. The same is true of the so-called Apostolic Constitutions. The Didache of the Twelve Apostles is a book written shortly after the first century, at the beginning of the second, and no later than the middle of the second century—no later, they say, than about the year 150. For if it had been the work of the Apostles themselves—written directly by their own hands—it would form part of Holy Scripture. That is the simple proof. The Apostolic Constitutions—that is, instructions given by the Apostles to the Church; this is what “Apostolic Constitutions” means—are later still.
They were not written by the hands of the Apostles. But pay close attention here: they echo the teaching of the Apostles, including what was not written in the Gospels. This is extremely important. The proof is that the Ecumenical Councils—that is, the Fathers—confirmed the Apostolic Constitutions. They are Canons of ecclesiastical law, and upon these Canons the later Canons of the seven Ecumenical Councils and the Local Councils were developed in greater breadth and depth. Thus, when you open the Rudder, the first thing you will encounter on its opening pages will be
the Apostolic Constitutions. After these come the Canons of the First Ecumenical Council, the Second, the Third, the Seventh, and so forth. You see, then, that these two texts echo the Apostolic Teaching. They were not written by the Apostles, but they echo their teaching—that is, the teaching of Christ. Let me give you a small example. The first place we encounter the Wednesday and Friday fast is in the ancient book of the Didache, which, as I told you, was written after the year 100 AD. The New Testament does not explicitly tell us to fast on Wednesday and Friday. Christ tells us only not to fast as the Pharisees do, and so forth, who fast twice a week. What, then, does “as” mean? It refers to the manner of fasting. But
the Didache says: “Do not fast on Monday and Thursday, as the hypocrites do”—that is, the Pharisees—“but on Wednesday and Friday.” Just as the Fathers changed the date of Pascha so that we would not celebrate it together with the Jews, making it a movable feast, so the Apostles changed the fasting days to Wednesday and Friday. As for the content of the fast—or rather, the manner of fasting—Christ taught us that. Do not fast as they do, and so forth; do not become proud or do anything of that sort. Pay attention: this is in the Sermon on the Mount. What does this practice echo? The teaching of Christ.
So when people ask, “Where is it written that we must fast on Wednesday and Friday?”—there it is. And if you recite the Creed and speak of Tradition—“I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church”—then you must accept this as well, because this is the Apostolic Teaching; this is Apostolic Tradition, and so forth. I have given you this simply as one small, representative example. Furthermore, the Holy Fathers, whether gathered in Councils or acting outside them, are all guardians of the Apostolic Traditions. Yet, as I have told you, the Holy Eucharist is Tradition in the highest sense, because there Christ Himself is handed on to us. Listen: I return once more to read what the Apostle Paul says about this.
In the eleventh chapter of First Corinthians he says: “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you.” From whom did he receive it? From the Lord. What did he receive? The very thing he handed on. He received and handed on, exactly like a relay baton: you take it from the person who brings it to you and pass it to the next. What did he receive? “That the Lord Jesus, on the night in which He was betrayed”—the night of the Mystical Supper—“took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘Take, eat.’” He took bread. He gave thanks—that is, He prayed—broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: “Take, eat.”
“This is My Body, which is broken for you.” It is broken for your sake. “Do this in remembrance of Me”—so that you may remember Me. “In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying...” These are the very words we have in the Divine Liturgy; they are found in the Apostle Paul. And the Apostle Paul says: “You proclaim the Lord’s death.”
Why do we keep them separate? I believe I explained this to you when we interpreted the Divine Liturgy. Why do we have the holy chalice and the holy diskos separately? This expresses death, because when the blood is separated from the body, there is death. If you remove all the blood from a living person, will he not die? Thus we have the Blood and the Body. Afterwards comes their union, through which we express the Resurrection. In this way, then, we proclaim the Lord’s death. Until when? Until He comes again—until His Second Coming. This means that the Divine Liturgy will continue to be celebrated until the Second Coming of Christ. It will be celebrated until the very day He comes. This is...
at once a prophecy and an indisputable fact.
Therefore, Apostolic Tradition in the highest and fullest sense is the Body of Christ. Above all else, it is the Body of Christ. But it is also the teaching, as I have been telling you all this time: what Christ said and what Christ did, all culminating in the Body of Christ—that is, in Christ Himself. Yet I also told you that Apostolic Tradition consists of two things. It is the teaching of the Lord—everything He lived and everything He did—and it is also the apostolicity of succession. What is this succession? Pay close attention here. Saint Clement of Rome, an Apostolic Father, says that the Apostles made provision so that, “when they fell asleep, other approved men should succeed them in their ministry.” In other words, the Apostles took care that, when they died—“fell asleep” means when they died—other tested and proven men would succeed them in the ministry of the Church. So what do we have here? We have succession. And how does this succession continue? It continues through Holy Orders, because Holy Orders preserve Apostolic Succession. Now pay close attention to something very important, my beloved—something of tremendous importance.
The Mystery of Holy Orders is celebrated during the Divine Liturgy. You all know this. Baptism also used to be celebrated within it. Indeed, a remnant of this remains in the words, “Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father,” and so forth, which we say in the Divine Liturgy. Yet I must tell you that, for purely practical—one might even say purely worldly—reasons, Baptism was separated from the Divine Liturgy and became a distinct service. Holy Matrimony, too, used to be celebrated during the Divine Liturgy. The proof is the remnant that remains: we say, “Blessed is the Kingdom.” We do not say, “Blessed is God”; we say, “Blessed is the Kingdom,” which reveals that...
Holy Matrimony was once incorporated into the Divine Liturgy. For practical—that is, worldly—reasons, it was separated. Shall I give you an example? What example? We live it every day. When we are going to marry or baptize our child, we invite guests. The guests arrive: the ladies in their formal gowns, the gentlemen in their tailcoats—do people still wear tailcoats? I do not know; I use the example simply to make the point. They come to attend, with flowers, decorations, spectacles, music, choirs, and sugared almonds. Why all this? To satisfy human vanity. But none of this could fit within the Divine Liturgy. And then we want the service in the afternoon.
“How can we go in the morning when we have work?” Or we wake up late and do not go to Church. So we move the Mystery of Holy Matrimony to Sunday afternoon, and so forth. Our vanity and worldliness brought about these changes. The changes were made, and the Mysteries themselves, of course, suffer no essential harm. But the one Mystery that can never, under any circumstances whatsoever, be separated from the Divine Liturgy is Holy Orders. Why? Pay very close attention, because what I am about to tell you is central: Holy Orders nourish Tradition—that is, the Body of Christ.
The priesthood derives from Tradition. Let me explain: it is the priesthood that celebrates the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. For if we do not have the Mystery of Holy Orders, we cannot speak of the Body and Blood of Christ. The Protestants are proof of this: they rejected the priesthood and do not have the Church, because they do not have the Body and Blood of Christ. Consequently, they do not have the Church. They are simply communities, we might say—Christian communities called Protestant. There is no Church without the priesthood, because the Church is constituted by the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, and that Mystery is celebrated by the priesthood. And who possesses the priesthood? The bishop and the priest. Yet both the bishop and the priest receive their priesthood
from the Church, from the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. This is why the priesthood celebrates the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the Mystery of the Church; it celebrates the Mystery, but within that Mystery the priesthood itself is also conferred. Thus, the bond between the priesthood and the Church is unbreakable. Neither can exist without the other—absolutely, absolutely neither can exist without the other. Therefore, my dear friends, we must understand how greatly we need the priesthood. Without it, as we have said, we do not have the Church. But we must also safeguard our priests and help them to be worthy priests.
You can begin doing this when your son tells you, “I am going to become a bishop,” and you then announce to the gathering of relatives and friends, “You know, our little Kostas says he wants to become a bishop.” Mother and father, you do your child great harm when you act like that. You should say, “My child, first become a good Christian, and then become a good monk or a good priest—not a bishop.” For if you encourage your child to become a bishop, you will fill him, like an empty sack, with the rot of vainglory and pride. He will be drawn to glittering things and say, “I am going to become a bishop.” No! Raise your child to be humble.
If he wishes to serve the Church, let him do so with the fear of God. Guard your child in the fear of God, so that he does not incur impediments to Holy Orders. There are many such impediments, but two are irrevocable, and you should know them: sexual sins and murder. I cannot understand how someone can commit sexual sins, can fall—God alone knows into what state—and then serve the Divine Liturgy. I assure you, I cannot understand it; I cannot comprehend it. How can you take your presvytera to have an abortion—which is murder, and indeed premeditated murder—and then serve the Divine Liturgy? I cannot understand it. These things are beyond comprehension. Help your children learn these things from infancy. Help them understand, my dear friends, that the priesthood is a great and solemn matter, and that the Church is a great and solemn matter: she is the handing down of the Body of Christ, of the living Christ,
not merely the name of the living Christ within history, but Christ Himself extended throughout history. This is the Church. And the priest serves this great and profound Mystery, this new Mystery—not an empty mystery, but the new Mystery—the Mystery kept silent through eternal ages, as the Apostle Paul says, which was unknown
even to the angels. My child, this is the Mystery you serve, you who are preparing to become a priest. This, my dear friends, is the fourth attribute of the Church: that the Church is Apostolic. But with God’s help—God willing, that is—we shall continue. We have finished the subject of the Church as Apostolic; next we shall go further and speak about the Church and the gifts of the Holy Spirit within her, as Saint Cyril writes of them.

«Έχω πολλά να σας πω», λέει ο Κύριος, «αλλ’ ου δύνασθε βαστάζειν άρτι». Δεν μπορείτε να σηκώσετε. Δεν μπορείτε να κρατήσετε. Σκεφτείτε να είμαστε σε μια αίθουσα και να λέει κάποιος, να λέει, και μάλιστα υψηλά πράγματα, σπουδαία, βαθιά, ουράνια. Τι να κρατήσουμε από αυτά;
Το αποδέχομαι τελικά. Πρώτα ακούω, μετά το παραλαμβάνω, κατόπιν με αυτό στέκομαι, δηλαδή το εφαρμόζω, και τελικά με αυτό σώζομαι. Να η κλιμάκωση της Αποστολικής Παραδόσεως, που ξεκινάει: ό,τι μου δίνει ο Απόστολος, που κι εκείνος πήρε, και εγώ που τελικά έχω τη σωτηρία. Αν τα πράγματα δεν ήσαν έτσι, τότε δεν θα μπορούσα να σωθώ. Λέγει, λοιπόν, ο Απόστολος: «Παρέδωκα γαρ υμίν», διότι σας έχω παραδώσει. Παρέδωκα, παράδοση· το ακούτε; Παρέδωκα, παράδοση. Είναι ο Χριστός η παράδοση. Όχι ο ψιλός τω ονόματι, όχι, όχι, προσέξτε. «Παρέδωκα γαρ υμίν εν πρώτοις ο και παρέλαβον». Εκείνο το οποίο και εγώ πήρα. Τι;
Αποτείνεται εις τον άγγελον της Εκκλησίας των Θυατείρων, που ο άγγελος της Εκκλησίας των Θυατείρων, δηλαδή ο επίσκοπος, είναι ένα πρόσωπο. Δεν λέγει εις τον επίσκοπον «εκείνο που έχεις, κράτησέ το». «Εκείνο που έχετε», γιατί υπονοείται όλη η Εκκλησία. Εκκλησία, διότι ο επίσκοπος δεν αποτελεί την Εκκλησία, αλλά είναι και ο λαός. Ούτε ο επίσκοπος χωρίς το λαό υπάρχει, βασιλιάς χωρίς βασίλειον, ούτε ο λαός χωρίς τον Επίσκοπο. Γι’ αυτό λέγει «κρατήσατε». Πρέπει όλη η Εκκλησία και ο λαός πρέπει να κρατήσει. Να κρατήσει τι; Εκείνο που έχετε. Ποιο είναι αυτό που έχετε;
Συνεπώς ούτε ο Επίσκοπος, ούτε ο Πρεσβύτερος, ούτε ο Διάκονος που είναι στη διακονία του Κυρίου μέσα στους αιώνες. Τι θα πει «δεν πρωτοτυπώ»; Θα πει, δεν θα βάλω πράγματα δικά μου, παρά μόνο αυτό που παρέλαβα. Οι Πατέρες, βεβαίως, παραδίδουν ό,τι παρέλαβαν. Ειδάλλως δεν θα ήταν Πατέρες ούτε Άγιοι. Αν μου πείτε, ο κάθε Πατήρ κάτι έχει γράψει διαφορετικά από κάποιον άλλον, προσέξτε. Απλώς επεξεργάζονται το δοσμένο υλικό κατά το πνεύμα που ο καθένας πήρε, κατά το χάρισμα που πήρε. Το υπάρχον υλικό απλώς το εργάζονται και σε έκταση και σε βάθος, αλλά δεν πρωτοτυπούν. Τι θα πει πρωτοτυπώ;
