Summary
Building on Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s catechesis, the lecture examines holiness as one of the four marks of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. The Church is holy because the naturally holy God dwells dynamically within her, making the faithful collectively and individually temples of the Holy Spirit. The Church is further sanctified because Jesus Christ is her holy head, the Holy Spirit is her life-giving soul, and the Holy Gospel stands at the center of her worship and spiritual life.

As always, my beloved, we are continuing with the eighteenth and final catechesis of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, as I have told you. Since he is speaking about the Church, he briefly examined one of the Church’s marks or attributes.
Namely, that the Church is catholic. In the Nicene Creed, the Symbol of Faith, we say, “In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.” These are the four marks of the Church. And because Saint Cyril has no time, as we said, he is in a hurry. Of course, these things had already been taught to the catechumens; this is simply a review. These catechetical lectures are reviews.
The catechumens would receive instruction for two or three years, and now they are in the period when they are called “those being illumined,” meaning candidates for Baptism, and these catechetical lectures are being delivered to them. We might call this a completion and review of the whole Christian teaching. That is precisely why he passes over things so quickly: he has no time. Perhaps it was Christmas, perhaps Pascha—I have not looked into it, and I do not know what the scholar says there in the Patrologia—and so they had to finish quickly. He says, “I have no more time.” For this reason, he passes over the Church’s other three attributes. But I told you that, since we have taken up these catechetical lectures...
and since we have not received corresponding catechesis on other occasions or at another time, this is an opportunity to examine the Church’s other attributes as well. We have seen what the Catholic Church means. Last Monday we saw what it means to say that the Church is one. Now we shall see what it means to say that the Church is holy: “In one, holy, catholic Church.” And, God willing, next Monday we shall see what it means to say that the Church is apostolic. First, we must clarify the term “holy.” We say “holy,” in the masculine or feminine. What does it mean? The concept of holiness has a twofold meaning.
The first is negative: it means separation from sin. Someone holy is separated from sin and has nothing to do with sin. The second meaning is someone enriched with virtues. We say that God is holy: first, because He is separated from sin; and second, because He is rich in virtues. What are these virtues? In God they are not called virtues; if we call them that, we do so only in an improper sense. They are called attributes of God. To be more precise and to use Patristic terminology, we would call them the divine uncreated energies of God.
In us, for example, love is a virtue. In God, it is an attribute—or, more precisely, one of His divine uncreated energies.
A divine uncreated energy of God. Thus God is holy both because He is separated from everything defiled and unclean—from sin—and because He is rich in good divine uncreated energies. And what is important is that the essence of God—let us say this as well—is holy. The nature of created beings is neither holy nor unholy. A human being, for example, is by nature neither holy nor unholy. Holiness or unholiness is something he acquires through his own free choice. Therefore, the natures of created beings, whether rational or irrational—such as the creation, the mountains, the sea, stones, stars, the sun, and the moon—are in their created essence neither good nor evil. We cannot say that created beings, rational or irrational, are holy in the sense that they possess a holy essence. No—not even human beings, much less other created things. But the essence of God is holy by nature, good by nature, good by nature. We, however, become...
good or holy through the working of grace. Saint Diadochos of Photike expresses this beautifully when he distinguishes between the essence of God and the essence of created beings. This is extremely important, because God is good by nature. Indeed, he says that the good—and what I am telling you is very important, so listen to why—is something that has being: it is the essence of God. For this reason, it is easier for man to do good. Evil, however, has no essence, because God did not create any evil essences. The devil is not evil in his essence; he is evil in his free choice. The devil’s nature and essence are not evil.
Otherwise, God would have created both good and evil. No—the devil is evil by his free choice. Therefore, if a human being becomes evil, that evil lies in his free choice, not in his essence. Whether someone understands this or not, let no one say, “That is my nature.” What nature of yours? Did God make you that way? “I was born this way.” Who says so? You may perhaps carry inherited tendencies—what we call hereditary conditions—but God did not make you as you claim. It lies within your power to become good. And as I told you, Saint Diadochos of Photike says that good is easier because it has being, while evil is harder because it is non-being, something that does not truly exist.
The good has essence, because it is God. Now, if you ask me why we do evil more easily and good with greater difficulty, this reveals a corruption—a corruption in human beings. But the whole matter begins with God. God is holy. “Holy God.” You see what we say: “Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal.” This hymn, in an adapted form, is the hymn of the holy angels, who glorify God without ceasing. “Without ceasing” means from the past and continuing forever into the future. The angels were created at a certain point, and from the time they were created they have glorified God, saying, “Holy, Holy, Holy.” They say it three times!
This is not only because the number three expresses emphasis, as when we say, “I wish you many, many, many years”—an emphatic repetition. It is also because each “Holy” corresponds to each person of the Holy Trinity. That is why, in our adaptation of the Trisagion Hymn, we say: “Holy God,” meaning the Father; “Holy Mighty,” meaning the Son; and “Holy Immortal,” meaning the Holy Spirit. Yet all three titles—God, Mighty, and Immortal—belong equally to all three persons.
To all three persons. Therefore, God is holy by nature, not by free choice; He is holy by nature. Our great point of reference, then, is the holy Triune God. Consequently, everything that comes from God is holy for that reason. We could stop here and say, “We are finished.” But we must explain these things in simpler terms so that we can understand them. Holiness, as an attribute of the Church, is something exceedingly precious, because the Church is the treasury of sanctification—the storehouse of our sanctification. The Church exists so that we may become holy. There is no other source of holiness in the visible or invisible worlds outside the Church.
I include the invisible world because, do not forget, the Church is not only our Church but also the Church of the angels. Who told you that the angels are not members of the Church? Yes: God, human beings, and angels—we are one Church. If you read the Apocalypse, you will see how often the angelic and human elements are interwoven. This is because the Church is one. Therefore, we cannot have holiness or sanctification from any source outside the Church. The Church is holy for the following reasons. I have listed about ten here, though there may be others.
First of all—first of all—the invisible element of the Church is God. And I have explained to you that God is holy by nature. Second, God makes the Church His temple and His people, and He walks among His people. “You,” says the Apostle Paul. Do you not know? He says to the Corinthians, “Do you not know that you are a temple of the Holy Spirit?” If you ask why he says “a temple of the Holy Spirit” rather than a temple of the Father or of the Son, the answer is that he singles out the Holy Spirit. Yet the Holy Spirit is not separated from either the Son or the Father. The Holy Spirit is singled out—that is, brought to the forefront...
because, as we shall see shortly, the Holy Spirit is the One who abides in the Church and brings forth spiritual life. We shall see this a little later. Do you not know, then, that you are a temple of God, a temple of the Holy Spirit? Indeed, in the same epistle, First Corinthians—I think in the third chapter, while the passage we have just mentioned is in the sixth—he says: “If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him.” And he adds, “which temple you are.” Here, of course, the Church is not being spoken of in the particular and narrow sense used two chapters later, where he refers to the human person himself.
More specifically, if you wish, he refers to the body. Not that only the body is involved; both body and soul are involved. But here we might say that this is a response against Gnosticism, because Paul neither removes the body from the soul nor separates the two. If God makes the body His dwelling place, then all the more will He make the soul His dwelling place—all the more. He emphasizes the body in order to silence and answer the Gnostics. You see, in the Apostle Paul we find many teachings directed against Gnosticism. Gnosticism, of course, had existed for three centuries before Christ, but in the Apostle Paul’s time it had not yet appeared in the form that would take Christianity and work it into its own system. Yet...
the Lord, with His prophetic vision, sees what is coming. Christianized Gnosticism is already appearing in the time of John the Evangelist, while John the Evangelist is still alive. Paul, in any case, says that people will tell you, “Do not touch; do not taste,” and that Holy Matrimony is evil. He says this prophetically. John the Evangelist speaks of these as things that have already arrived. So, pay attention.
The human being is a temple of God, but the Church is also a temple of God. In the first sense, then, when he says, “which temple you are,” he means that all of us together are the Church of God. We are the temple of God—not merely the Church in the sense of an assembly, but a temple, meaning a dwelling place. Whoever destroys His temple, God will destroy. How can someone destroy it? In the case of each individual, as we were saying, it is through sexual immorality—indeed, immorality in its whole range, in its whole range. For a little earlier in the chapter he says, “Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate”—meaning those who take the passive role in homosexual acts—
“nor men who engage in homosexual acts”—meaning those who take the active role—“will inherit the Kingdom of God.” They will not enter the Kingdom of God. Here, however, Paul is speaking of the Church as a whole. What does he mean? He means heresy. He means the person who destroys the Church of God through heresy. And this is an exceedingly grave matter, a very grave matter. Whoever destroys the Church, the temple of God, God will destroy. “Will destroy”: the verb is in the future tense. God will destroy him. Why else is the people of God holy? This is stated in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Do not forget that God often says His people are holy. In the Old Testament, God is often called the Holy One of Israel. The holy God loves to dwell among a holy people. And who are the holy people now? They are the Church, the faithful. Yet He does not merely love to dwell among them; He loves to walk among them. That is why the verb used is “I will walk among them.” This expression appears in the Old Testament, and the Apostle Paul repeats it in his Second Epistle to the Corinthians: God walks among His people. I remind you of the first chapter of the Apocalypse, where Christ was walking among the lampstands—the seven lampstands, meaning the seven Churches of Asia Minor. Do you know what “walking” signifies? It shows God’s dynamic presence within the Church, whereas standing would suggest something static. Of course, God neither walks nor stands, since He fills all things. This is an expression used to help us understand that God is present among His people in a dynamic and active way. Did you hear that? In a dynamic and active way. Thus God walks among His people: the holy God among His holy people. Third.
God calls His people to come out of the profane world, the whole of which is evil because it lies in the power of the evil one. And here the evil one is the devil; the devil is called the evil one. The world lies in the power of the evil one. Pay attention: this expression is not neuter; it does not mean “evil” as a thing, but “the evil one,” just as in the words, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” There too, the expression refers not to evil in the abstract, but to the person of the devil. It is the devil. So here as well, the whole world lies in the embrace
of the devil, the evil one. Did not the devil himself tell the Lord that this whole world—after showing Him the kingdoms of the earth—belonged to him? Of course, it does not belong to him; he only thinks that it does. Yet it is under the dominion of Satan in this sense: people accept his influence, and so the devil holds sway over the world. For the world does not believe in Christ—whether it has not believed or will not believe—and therefore it automatically falls under the devil’s dominion. What, then, does God do? He calls His people to come out: “Come out, My people; come out, My people.” This exodus is...
the most heroic act of the people of God. When the Hebrews came out of Egypt, Egypt, I must tell you, was a type—a type of the land of shadow and death. The Egyptians—God forbid that we should mean the people themselves—were a type. They were a type of the demons, while Pharaoh was a type of the devil, the ruler of the demons; and they were drowned in the Red Sea. This signifies Baptism, in which the spiritual ruler, the devil, and the demons are drowned. Indeed, if you have seen...
you should look at the icon of the Baptism of Christ, where there are little figures in the Jordan. As I told you during the question period, the Orthodox icon is dogmatic. Those figures are the powers of Satan drowning in the Jordan as Christ is baptized. Thus, God’s people had to leave the land of Egypt and go to the Promised Land, which is a type of the Kingdom of God. All of these things are expressed through types. These types would find their fulfillment in the New Testament. It is not Egypt itself; we may travel there and stay there. Great Fathers of our Church lived in Egypt.
Great ascetics lived in Egypt. Egypt itself is not the issue; it is a type. Nor is the Promised Land simply Israel; that too is a type. The people, then, had to come out. In the New Testament this exodus is chiefly a departure in one’s way of life. At times it may also be a physical departure, such as that made by a monk: a physical departure from the world, which is always Egypt in the typological sense I have explained. This departure may also become physical in the days of the Antichrist, when the faithful may flee to the mountains and go where no one lives, so that they may have some peace and avoid whatever the Antichrist imposes. But above all, this exodus concerns our way of life. The way in which a believer lives in this world must be a way of departing from the world; that is, he must not live a worldly life. This is the spiritual exodus. I appeal to your love, because you often tell me privately, “You know, they mock me because I fast and because I go to Church. They say this to me and that to me.” Why should that trouble you? The world will mock you. Do you not know that the world will reproach you? Does not the Apostle Paul say in Hebrews, “Let us therefore go forth”?
Let us therefore go forth with Him. With whom? With Christ, because He suffered and was crucified outside the camp, outside the city of Jerusalem, “bearing His reproach.” His reproach! Do we not understand, my beloved, that from the moment I undertake to be a Christian, I bear the reproach of Christ? Moses did the same with prophetic vision, as the Apostle Paul writes in Hebrews: rather than the treasures of Egypt and being called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, he chose the reproach of Christ.
He regarded the reproach of Christ as greater riches. You may say this is an anachronism, since Christ had not yet appeared. But Moses saw with prophetic vision—the reproach of Christ—and, Scripture says, chose to share affliction with the people of God. You understand, my beloved, that all this was an exodus in one’s way of life. For the Hebrews it was a physical exodus, because they left Egypt and crossed the Red Sea. You, the believer, leave behind the shadow of death and sin; you pass through the crossing called Baptism, and now you are a person abiding in the Promised Land. You must therefore live in a continual exodus. This is why the desire of some Hebrews to return to Egypt...
was a destruction of the type, a violation of its typological meaning, just as adultery destroys the type of the union between Christ and the Church. It was the greatest sin Israel could commit in the wilderness—the desire to go back to Egypt. For they remembered the garlic and onions of sin, the garlic and onions of Egypt. Do you see? The types pointed toward a reality. The people of God, then, are continually going forth. My brother, you came to know the truth of Christ—this should have happened from your Baptism—but in any case, you came to know and experience it. That means an exodus. Do not remain any longer within a worldly framework.
Now Carnival is approaching, and we are told that we must go to the dances because the husband’s social position requires it; or we must go because, you know, it is a patriotic dance; or we must go for one of a thousand other reasons. No! You have come out. You have come out, and that is the end of it. You no longer have anything to do with what is called “the world.” But is dancing evil? That is another subject, and then I would have to tell you whether dancing is good or evil. It belongs to the world. All these things are called “the world”—and I place that word in quotation marks. They are all the world. Saint Isaac says—and I have told you this so many times—“If we had to name all the passions with a single word, we would call them ‘the world.’ And if we had to explain the word ‘world,’ we would name each of the passions individually.”
Vainglory, ostentation, and so forth. Ladies and gentlemen, do we understand this exodus? I beg and implore you. Otherwise, all our talks and everything else fall into the void, and we accomplish nothing. We must come out. I must truly grasp this: we must come out; it is a commandment. Thus the people are called to come out. As I told you, this is holiness in its negative aspect. I said at the beginning that a saint—or anything holy—is, first, one who is separated from sin and, second, one who is enriched with virtue. Here we have the negative aspect: we must come out. We must leave behind the worldly way of thinking
and begin to enrich ourselves with virtues. It is not enough to come out; you must also become rich in virtue. It is not enough to pull the chicory—excuse me—the poppies, the couch grass, and the other weeds from a field in order to sow wheat. You must actually sow the wheat, not merely remove the weeds. Fourth, my beloved, the founder of the Church is Jesus Christ. He is her invisible head. He is the One “whom the Father sanctified,” as the Gospel according to John says—“whom the Father sanctified,” meaning that He set Him apart to be the head of the Church. And Holy Scripture says that He anointed Him
with the Holy Spirit. Did not the Holy Spirit descend at the Baptism of Christ? He anointed Him. To anoint means to apply oil or place a sign upon someone. When the Holy Spirit descended, what did He do? He pointed Him out. What is the Holy Spirit? The finger of God. Christ says, “If I work miracles by the finger of God.” The Holy Spirit, therefore, is the finger of God the Father. In this way He pointed out the Son—that is, He anointed Him with the Holy Spirit, marking Him out and revealing Him. Holy Scripture also says, “To Him who washed us from our sins in His own blood.”
He washes us—that is, He cleanses us and bathes us from our sins. His blood, then, is holy. Thus we see that Jesus Christ, as the head of the Church, is holy. When we say, “The Father anointed Him through the Holy Spirit,” we must always understand this—pay attention—with reference to Christ’s human nature. For Christ had no need to be anointed as the second person of the Holy Trinity. That would be inconceivable. Since the Son is consubstantial—of one essence—with the Father, and since the one essence of God is ontologically good and holy, what meaning could such a sanctification have? It is the human nature that is sanctified. Or, to speak more precisely, it is not sanctified.
It is revealed as holy. For when Christ assumed flesh from the Theotokos, she herself had first been cleansed and sanctified—the Holy Spirit had cleansed her—and therefore the flesh He assumed was already holy from the first moment. Christ did not need to become holy, but to be manifested, or better, to be revealed as holy. The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus as holy; He anoints Him and sets His seal upon Him as holy. He is holy through His assumption of flesh from the Theotokos. Let us not forget this, because otherwise we fall into a dreadful heresy. Indeed, something was recently published in a religious newspaper...
that muddles these matters, but I will say no more about it. Sometimes an expression may lack precision and create a problem. Still, I will state something I have said before. Someone listening to these recordings might say, “Ah, Father Athanasios is a heretic.” No; I may simply have made a mistake. A heretic is not someone who makes a mistake, but someone who persists after the mistake has been shown to him. So if someone comes and tells me, “Father, at that point you were not very precise; you made a mistake,” then certainly, I accept the correction. I am not therefore a heretic; I have made a mistake. We are human. A heretic is one who persists in error. That is why there is a Latin saying:
“To err is human; to persist in error is diabolical.” Only the devil persists—and the heretic, who is an instrument of the devil. Fifth, my beloved, the One who gives life to the Church is the Holy Spirit. The Church is a body, and the soul of the Church is the Holy Spirit. As I told you on a previous occasion, the Church is the body because she is the body of Christ. Did I not tell you last time that Christ is the Christological foundation of the Church and the Holy Spirit her pneumatological foundation? So if we speak of a body, what is the soul of this body? The soul of this body is the Holy Spirit. Therefore,
just as the human spirit gives life to the body, so the Holy Spirit gives life to the Church. What does He do? He sanctifies her members and gives them life. This is what we call spiritual life. Spiritual life is nothing other than the life of the Holy Spirit, the life that flows from the Holy Spirit. We cannot speak of spiritual life in name only if we do not have the presence of the Holy Spirit. That is why I think the finest blessing we could offer someone is that he may have the Holy Spirit and begin to live according to the commands of the Holy Spirit. We begin with the Holy Spirit, because He is the source—the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.
The Holy Spirit is the second Comforter. We begin our spiritual life from the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, so that it may be sustained; and it will again be sustained by the Holy Spirit. For we cannot preserve what we have received from the Holy Spirit unless we continue to have the Holy Spirit. Thus, from Him we draw our spiritual life, and through Him we sustain it. And do not forget what spiritual life means: living as the Holy Spirit wills. If only you knew how much distortion surrounds this subject of “spiritual life”! How many things we call spiritual when they are not spiritual at all and, much more, do not belong to the Holy Spirit. And often I am afraid—deeply afraid—that we may imagine ourselves to be spiritual people and yet fail to be saved, precisely because we do not know what spiritual life is.
The Church is called holy because she possesses the Holy Gospel. You know that if the Holy Altar is the center of the worship of our Church, then the very center of that center is the Gospel. The Gospel book always rests upon the Holy Altar, at its center. When the priest venerates, he venerates the Holy Gospel and the Holy Altar. Therefore, the Gospel is holy. The entire New Testament is, of course, Gospel; let us not forget that. Yet, if I may be permitted to make this distinction—even though...
the distinction is not strictly correct, I will make it for practical purposes—we may speak of the four Gospels. What are the four Gospels? They are the life and teaching of Christ. Since Christ is holy, His life and His teaching are also holy. Therefore, the Gospels—and thus the Gospel—are holy. If you ask why I have spoken specifically of the four Gospels, the other books, Acts and the Epistles, do nothing other than interpret them. What does the Apostle Paul do in his epistles? What do the other Apostles do? They interpret what Christ said and what Christ is—what He said and what He is. Therefore, the whole New Testament, which may properly be called
which can rightly be called the Gospel—the twenty-seven books—is holy. Seventh: prayer is holy. Prayer is nothing other than the way we communicate with the holy God. When I pray, I communicate with the holy God.
What does it mean to communicate? It means that there is a dialogue between two persons: myself and God. God hears and sees, because He is a person. He is a person. Now pay attention: if the Church prays, then we, the persons who belong to the Church, are in communion with the person of God.
We could not speak of communion if that communion were not holy. God, then, is holy, and His people are holy—as we said earlier—and therefore the communion of God’s people with Him, whether individually or together in prayer, is also holy. In other words, prayer is holy. Eighth: what sanctifies a person within the Church? The Mysteries. Who performs the Mysteries within the Church? The Son, of course, handed them down to us, and the Holy Spirit performs them. So never forget that the Mysteries are always performed by the Holy Spirit. Pay attention: the entire Triune God acts in them. In the Divine Liturgy we say, “Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” When we pray—I have just remembered this—we say, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This is an invocation. Yet the One who is visibly manifested as performing the Mysteries—and this is why we speak of the Holy Spirit—is the Holy Spirit Himself. Let us not forget that the Triune God is always undivided, everywhere. We say that the Son created the universe and all things: “Without Him nothing was made that was made.”
This is said to exalt the Son. Yet the Father creates, the Son creates, and the Holy Spirit creates. But, in a manner of speaking—if I may put it this way—the three persons seem to divide the work among themselves. Thus we say: the Father creates through the Son in the Holy Spirit. The Father wills, the Son creates, and the Holy Spirit sustains. Yet it is always the Triune God, undivided. Here, however, we are speaking of the Holy Spirit who abides in the Church. And because He abides in the Church, Christ and the Father are also present. As the Son, of course, He is consubstantial with the Father; but as Christ, even in His human nature, He is present everywhere. Let me explain this as well.
This is because of His hypostatic union. “Hypostatic” means one person in two natures. Since the divine nature is present everywhere, and since the person is one, Christ is therefore present everywhere even in His human nature. And although we say that the Son is in Heaven, He is also present everywhere. This is because of the hypostatic union. Hypostasis means person. You know, the word hypostasis can also mean essence; but once “hypostasis” became established as a theological term, it came to mean person. The One who sanctifies and performs the Mysteries, then, is the Holy Spirit. Therefore, it is the Mysteries that sanctify the faithful.
Can we speak of sanctification without the Mysteries? How am I to be sanctified? By confessing and by receiving Holy Communion. These two Mysteries are necessary. You know, there are three that are necessary—or, if you prefer, two. There are two, and I will tell you which: Baptism and Holy Communion. Through them I enter the Kingdom of God; through them I am sanctified; through them I live. But when I stain my Baptism, when I stain the baptismal garment, the love of God provides the Mystery of Confession. Thus, in place of the unrepeatable Mystery of Baptism, I have the Mystery of Confession, through which I am continually cleansed. In this sense, we would say that
Confession is a necessary Mystery. Then, in Chrismation, the Holy Spirit comes to place His seal upon me and give me gifts. He gives me gifts. Sometimes, when an infant is dying, we baptize the child but do not have time for Chrismation. Yet Chrismation is necessary for us to receive our inheritance. As I have told you before, the gifts of grace are the inheritance with which the Holy Spirit endows every believer. Then there are the other Mysteries: Holy Orders, Holy Matrimony, and Holy Unction—have I left one out? Holy Orders, Holy Matrimony, and Holy Unction are not obligatory. I am not obliged to marry; I am not obliged to become a clergyman; and if, let us suppose, I have not fallen ill—since Holy Unction is the Mystery given for illness, and so forth—I may not receive the Mystery of Holy Unction either.
The Holy Eucharist and Baptism come first. Baptism is then completed—so to speak—by what follows: as I told you, the Mystery of Confession and the rest, together with Chrismation and the gifts of the Holy Spirit that I receive. So how can I be sanctified without the Mysteries? Never. There is an interpretation of the parable of the Good Samaritan: when the Good Samaritan takes out the two denarii—not to pay, no, not to pay—but so that the innkeeper may use them to heal the wounded man, the man left half dead; and that half-dead wounded man represents humanity.
He says, “Here are two denarii; take them.” The interpreters say that one denarius represents the Mysteries and the other represents Holy Scripture. With these two, the sick man—the wounded human being—will be healed. And he says, “Whatever more you spend, when I return, I will repay you.”
Whatever extra you spend, whatever you spend beyond that. I remember telling you once: what could this “something more” be? It is the labor of the clergyman. For nothing more is needed to save the wounded man left half dead. There are the Mysteries and Holy Scripture; there is nothing else. What, then, is the extra expense? It is the labor of the clergyman, the labor of the shepherd. “I,” he says, “will repay you.” And this is nothing other than the reward of the good shepherd, who will gain the Kingdom of God. You see, then, that it is the Mysteries and Holy Scripture that save and sanctify the human person.
Furthermore—ninth—is worship. Worship is holy. How could worship ever be offered to God if it were not holy? Worship offered to the holy God must therefore be holy. And the supreme act of worship is the Holy Eucharist.
Here we offer bread and wine, as I have told you many times, and He offers us His Body and Blood. The Father, through the Holy Spirit, offers us the Body and Blood of Christ. Here the Son seems to take a passive role, because the Father, through the Holy Spirit, changes the wine and bread into the Body of the Lord Jesus Christ, and Christ appears to remain passive. He only appears so: when we receive Him, He seems, in a manner of speaking, to remain passive. But He is not passive in the least. If you receive Holy Communion unworthily, you place fire within yourself and incur guilt and condemnation. Christ, therefore, is not passive within you; He is active with the greatest power. I have spoken only of how the matter appears. So the supreme act of worship is the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist.
It is the supreme act of worship. There we receive the holy Flesh and holy Blood of Christ. How, then, could worship—and especially the Divine Liturgy—not be holy? Do you understand what we have been doing up to this point? We have been explaining why the Church is holy. Tenth: the members of the Church are also holy. Why are they holy? Because, as members of the Body of Christ, they share in the holiness of His Body, and so the members themselves are holy. And do not forget that one of the names given to Christians was “the saints.” “Greet the saints,” writes the Apostle Paul. The saints. Therefore, if her members are holy, the Church is also holy. And because every believer is holy, each one ought to be
the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Christ said, “You are the light of the world.” Yet He also said that God is light. And He Himself said, “I am the light of the world,” because He is holy. Therefore, He is light and holy, and I too must be light and holy. Do you understand, then, what it means when a believer is not light but darkness? “You are the salt of the earth.” Salt has two basic properties: it gives flavor to food and preserves it. If salt loses its saltiness—if it is no longer truly salt—then it is useless. Christ says that it is thrown out and trampled underfoot by men, because it is not even fit for manure.
It is trampled underfoot rather than used in the garden. When a Christian becomes salt without saltiness, he is trampled at the crossroads of this world. He is trampled upon and made a mockery of by the devil and by the world. May God preserve us, my dear friends, from ever becoming darkness or salt without saltiness. But as we conclude, you may ask: are there not also worthless members within the Church? Is everyone in the Church holy? Do all who are baptized truly become holy? Do they remain holy and die as saints? Certainly not. What, then, are such people? They are what Scripture calls the worthless. Here, “worthless” means useless: worthless members.
Do not forget the parable of the dragnet. A dragnet is a fishing net. When I cast the net and fish, I am doing nothing other than drawing things into the net. That is why, metaphorically, we say, “That man ensnared us”—that is, he caught us in his net; he fished us in. The net, then, is the preaching of the Gospel. Christ said, “To what shall I compare the Kingdom of God? To a dragnet, to a net.” It is cast into the sea and catches both good fish and worthless fish. “Worthless” here does not mean rotten, but inferior fish. Inferior fish—bony little fish and other kinds that fishermen throw away. This, then, is the image used by the Lord Himself. When the net is drawn in with both the good and worthless fish, they are separated. The good fish are placed in containers and kept, while the worthless ones are thrown away.
Even today we see this among fishermen working along the shore. This, my dear friends, is what is meant by those members who are worthless. The preaching brought them as far as a seat inside the church building, but not all of them bear fruit. There is also that other image, the field of weeds. The time of harvest will come, and then the wheat will be gathered into the barns while the straw will be burned in the furnace. The Lord Himself interpreted the parable: the faithful, who are the wheat, enter the Kingdom of God, while the others go into eternal fire. You see? The separation takes place at the end. Listen: it takes place at the end. Let me add one more thing.
Christ said, “I am the vine; you are the branches”—that is, the shoots of the vine. Every branch that does not bear fruit is cut off. What does the vine-grower do? When he prunes his vine, does he not cut away the branches he knows will not produce grapes, so that new shoots may grow and there may be abundant fruit? Thus, the branch that bears no fruit is cut off and, as Christ says in the fifteenth chapter of John, is thrown into the fire. In this way, those who are not living members of the Church are pruned away, and one day they will find themselves in eternal Hell. I would like to tell you that this world is nothing other than the setting in which the Church makes her journey
through history. This is the historical Church. What does “the historical Church” mean? It means the Church as she walks and journeys through history, through this world. She receives many people: both the good and the bad, those who believe and those who later cease to believe, those who become saints and those who do not. It is only to be expected that such worthless members will exist within the Church, because the Church is still on her journey. Yet the Church does not cease to be holy because of these worthless members, whom her head, Christ, tolerates for a time. This is what the Apostle Peter says, and what Saint James the Brother of the Lord says. Because God is forbearing, do you imagine that He will not come again? Because Christ is forbearing? No. He will come again and judge the world.
He will judge the world, and then He will give to each person what is due. But when someone within the Church—the historical Church in this world—causes scandal in a way that threatens the sound members, we do what must be done, my dear friends. When we have a crate of oranges, peaches, or some other fruit,
What do we do with it? We throw it away, because we judge that it can no longer become sound again, and we throw it away so that it will not spoil the others as well. Well then, both the Old Testament and the New Testament say the following. In the New Testament, in 1 Corinthians 5:13, it says: “Put away the evil person from among yourselves.” You are to take him and cast him out.
The evil person is like the rotten orange in the crate: he is removed so that he will not spoil the other oranges. This is the Church’s right to depose and to excommunicate. What does “excommunicate” mean? It means that I put you outside the boundaries of the Church. Would you like another example? If you are a conscientious Christian and come to Holy Confession, and your spiritual father tells you, “You will not receive Holy Communion,” at that moment he places you outside and waits for you to mature—that is, to understand how you must live—so that he may bring you back into the Church. How are you brought back in? When he tells you, “You may receive Holy Communion.” Thus, my beloved, we see clearly that the Church is holy. What should we say next? Saint Ignatius...
Saint Ignatius, in one of his letters to the Smyrnaeans, calls the Church “most worthy of God” and “the bearer of holiness.” I would recommend that you read the letters of Saint Ignatius the God-bearer if you can find them. I once gave a brief analysis of them many, many years ago—perhaps more than twenty years ago. They are in the Patrologia, somewhere in the second or third volume; I do not remember. The fourth lesson refers to... All his letters concern the subject of the Church. For this reason, together with Cyprian...
and Tertullian, he is regarded as one of the ancient ecclesiologists of our Church—one of those who taught about the nature of the Church. There you will see what the Church truly means. Here, then, he calls the Church “most worthy of God,” fitting for God Himself. And therefore the Church possesses great dignity. He calls her “the bearer of holiness,” because she bears holiness within herself. This is so because her head is holy: she bears holiness and makes her members bearers of holiness as well.
How beautiful that is! My beloved, the purpose of this subject was to help us understand. As I told you at the beginning, holiness is one of what we might call the Church’s precious attributes. The Church is holy. I want us to understand that we, too, must be sanctified. We must realize that our life as Christians must not be static. Let no one believe that sanctification is something static—that because he confessed his former sins, he now has nothing left to confess and everything is perfectly well. People come who once had many sins and confessed them, and then they tell me—I feel sorry for them; they have a certain self-satisfied air—“Now I have nothing,” and the next time again, “I have nothing.” I tell you that even if only one day has passed, I would have enough to confess, if only I could carry my spiritual father in my pocket, because, as you see, it is not always easy to have our spiritual father close at hand. I tell you, I would have quite a few things to enumerate...

Στην Αίγυπτο ζήσαν ασκητές σπουδαίοι. Δεν είναι η Αίγυπτος καθ’ εαυτήν, τύπος είναι. Ούτε ακόμη η γη της Επαγγελίας είναι το Ισραήλ· τύπος είναι, τύπος. Έπρεπε λοιπόν ο λαός να εξέλθει. Αυτή η έξοδος είναι τώρα, στην Καινή Διαθήκη, τροπική. Κάποτε μπορεί να είναι και τοπική. Είναι εκείνο που θα έκανε ένας μοναχός. Είναι τοπική έξοδος από τον κόσμο, ο οποίος κόσμος είναι πάντοτε η Αίγυπτος. Εννοείται τυπική, όπως σας είπα. Θα είναι η έξοδος αυτή τοπική στις ημέρες του Αντιχρίστου, όταν οι πιστοί θα πάρουν τα βουνά ενδεχομένως, θα πάνε εκεί που δεν θα μένουν άνθρωποι, να έχουν λίγο την ησυχία τους, να αποφύγουν ό,τι ακριβώς θα επιβάλλει ο Αντίχριστος. Αλλά κυριότατα είναι τροπική η έξοδος αυτή. Δηλαδή, ο τρόπος με τον οποίο θα ζήσει ο πιστός μέσα στον κόσμο αυτόν θα είναι τρόπος εξόδου από τον κόσμο. Δηλαδή, δεν θα ζει κοσμική ζωή. Αυτή είναι η τροπική έξοδος. Κάνω έκκληση στην αγάπη σας, γιατί ιδιωτικά πάρα πολλές φορές μου λέτε: «Ξέρετε, με κοροϊδεύουν που νηστεύω, διότι πάω στην εκκλησία, μου λένε τούτο, μου λένε εκείνο». Τι σας νοιάζει; Ο κόσμος θα κοροϊδέψει. Δεν το ξέρετε αυτό, ότι θα ονειδίσει ο κόσμος; Δεν λέει στην προς Εβραίους ο Απόστολος Παύλος «Εξερχώμεθα τοίνυν»;
