Summary
Continuing Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s eighteenth catechesis, the lecture expands the Creed’s confession of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, focusing on why the Church is one. Local Churches and parishes are not separate Churches but members of the one Church, united through the same Orthodox faith, episcopal order, and participation in the one Body and Blood of Christ. Paul also depicts the one Church as Christ’s pure bride, a holy temple built of living stones, and one Eucharistic loaf gathered from many grains into a single body.

Still continuing with Saint Cyril’s eighteenth catechesis, my beloved, in the topics we covered before the Christmas break we saw what he says about the Church. Saint Cyril, of course, is pressed for time. “Concerning her,” he says, “I would need many more hours to give an account.” If I were to tell you more, he says, as I would wish, I would need many more hours—much more time. That is why, as you saw, he gave only a brief explanation.
Of the confession that the Church is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic, he explained only the term “Catholic,” though his explanation was quite substantial and important: that the Church is Catholic, and why she is called Catholic. Then he told us: Take care—wherever you may find yourself, do not simply go somewhere in a city because you have heard that there is a church there. Seek the One, Holy, Catholic Church, because the heretics also misuse the name “church” for their own gatherings. Take care, then, that you do not find yourself in a place belonging to heretics.
My beloved, he also told us that the Church is an image of the Jerusalem above. We saw this too: she is free, he says, and the mother of us all. She who was once barren—we explained all this—now has many children. We should now begin with paragraph twenty-seven, because there he concludes this subject. Then, from paragraph twenty-eight onward, he speaks to us about eternal life: “I believe in One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come.”
“And the life of the age to come” follows and is the final subject of the eighteenth catechesis. But in paragraph seventeen—excuse me, I mean in the remaining part of the eighteenth catechesis, in paragraph twenty-seven, which is still before us—he tells us that within this Church are the gifts of the Holy Spirit: helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues, gifts of healing, and so forth. He does not explain them, of course, because he is in haste. As I read, this is the final phrase of that paragraph. He has no time; they must move forward, because the Baptism must take place.
Naturally, these things were not entirely unknown. The catechumens would have learned them in due course. Even after their catechesis, they would still have had the opportunity to learn many things. But since we ourselves have undertaken this catechesis, and since it would be good for us to have a clear picture of the Church as One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic, let us be permitted to say what Saint Cyril had no time to say, so that we may gain a fuller understanding of the Church. We shall also discuss this paragraph, which speaks of the gifts of the Holy Spirit within the Church.
We shall examine the other three attributes or marks of the Church—that she is One, Holy, and Apostolic—since “Catholic” has already been explained. Today we shall see that the Church is One. Why is the Church One? This, we might say, is a fundamental element among the Church’s defining marks. The Church, my beloved, is One because of her unity. She is One because unity is essential to her; because she is united, she is One.
Thus we see that the Church is One. She is not two, or three, or ten, but One, because of the Church’s unity. And since the Church is one body whose head is Christ—that is, Christ is the head of the Church—the Church is therefore the Body of Christ. This Body of Christ is given life by the one Holy Spirit. Once, when we were speaking about the Holy Spirit, I told you something that we may well repeat, so that you may see how two persons of the Holy Trinity are present here: in the Church there is the Son.
There are Christ and the Holy Spirit. I told you that the Church has a twofold foundation: one Christological and the other pneumatological. What does “Christological” mean? The Church is founded upon Christ’s coming into the world and springs forth from His side pierced by the spear, from which flowed blood and water. These signify Baptism and the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the two Mysteries that constitute the Church, the Body of Christ. Thus the Church’s Christological foundation is that the Church is a body—the Body of Christ. Then we have Pentecost. You have often heard it said that Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. That description is not correct. Only if we confined ourselves to the pneumatological foundation could we call Pentecost the Church’s foundational day and birthday. For on the day of Pentecost we see the Church’s other foundation: the Holy Spirit, who establishes the Church. And just as the Body of Christ remains within history,
it remains not only because Christ said that He would always be with us, telling His disciples, “I am with you until the end of the age.” Here “the end” refers to His Second Coming. For as long as the world and history endure, He will be with you—not only invisibly, but also visibly, in His Body and Blood in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist.
We also have the pneumatological foundation: the Holy Spirit within the Church. For it is the Holy Spirit who gives life to the body of the Church. It is the Holy Spirit who accomplishes all the Mysteries and establishes them. We invoke Him and say to the Father: “Send down Your Holy Spirit to change this bread into the Body of Your Christ.” It does not say “of Your Son,” but “of Your Christ,” because it refers to His human nature. And we ask that Your Holy Spirit likewise change the wine here in this chalice into the Blood of Your Christ. Who, then, performs the sacred work within the Church? The Holy Spirit. Of course, all three persons are present, but the Holy Spirit abides in the Church. Christ emphasized this to us: the Holy Spirit will remain with you.
“Another Comforter.” Thus the two Comforters abide in the Church and constitute the Church: the Son—more specifically, Christ—and the Holy Spirit. The Church therefore has a twofold foundation: Christological, as the Body, and pneumatological. Now pay attention to the matter of persons. I have told you this before, but it is worth refreshing our memory: when we speak of a body, individual persons are not brought into relief. We say that the Church is the Body of Christ—that is, all of us. Yet the Body of Christ, meaning the faithful as one body, if you will permit me to use a certain word...
The word “mass” is not at all a beautiful one. A mass is without personhood. We may call a mob a mass because it has no distinct personal character. But how, then, can the Church preserve personhood? You know how greatly this term “mass” has been abused. Various systems have always turned human beings into masses. Is the Church a mass? If she were only the Body of Christ, individual persons would not be brought into relief, and consequently she would be a mass. But when the Holy Spirit comes and distributes His gifts
without Himself being divided—the Holy Spirit is not divided; it is the gifts that He distributes—then the Holy Spirit comes and rests like a flame of fire upon the head of each person present. They were not merely the Twelve, for Matthias had meanwhile been chosen. There were 120 souls—did you hear that? One hundred and twenty souls: the whole Church, both the Apostles and the faithful. The first believers numbered 120. They all received the Holy Spirit upon their heads. But when the Holy Spirit shows that He distributes the gifts without being divided, this reveals the persons. The Holy Spirit could have come upon that mass of 120 as one flame over them all. Yet He does not do this. He rests upon the head of each one, which means that the persons are now distinctly revealed. Thus the Christological foundation reveals the body, while the pneumatological foundation reveals the person—or the persons. This is according to the pattern of the Holy Trinity, for the Holy Trinity is one essence—one essence, or, if we may use the word, one “mass.”
Forgive me for the word; I place it in quotation marks. There is one essence, yet we have three persons. Thus the persons are not flattened or erased; rather, they are distinctly revealed within the Godhead. So it is also in the Church. We have one body, yet the persons are preserved. Consequently, the Church is not a mass. She is not a mass. Human beings have turned other human beings into masses, but Christ did not make His Church into a mass. I believe it was necessary to say this. I have said it before, perhaps last year, but it needed to be said again so that we may understand that the Church is One.
She is One both because of her unity with her head, who is Christ, and because her body is given life by the one—and there is only one—Holy Spirit. The Church is also One because the faith is one. The hope is also one. Baptism is one. The confession is one. When the Apostle Paul, for example, speaks to Timothy about the good confession, there is one confession. There is also one house, the house of God; one Kingdom of God; and one Lord.
There is one God and one flock. This is why the Apostle Paul says in Ephesians—an epistle that is profoundly, profoundly ecclesiological... Since I have mentioned this, allow me to connect it with what we said earlier about the Church’s pneumatological and Christological foundations. Listen to how the Apostle Paul expresses it in many places throughout his epistles. Anyone translating these passages would certainly encounter difficulty without theological knowledge. He says: “In Christ Jesus, in the Holy Spirit.” That is the phrase: “In Christ Jesus, in the Holy Spirit.” Translate that for me.
How are we to translate it? It is difficult to render. It means precisely what I have been explaining all this time: the Church’s twofold foundation. He does not say merely, “in Christ Jesus,” but “in Christ Jesus, in the Holy Spirit.” This is extremely important. Now listen to a short passage from this epistle and see all that it contains, for what we have discussed also appears in other epistles. What does this brief passage in chapter four, verses four through six, contain? It says: “One body and one Spirit.” Here again we have one body and one Spirit. Whose Body is it? Christ’s. Which Spirit? The Holy Spirit, whose presence gives life to the body. One body and one Spirit. These expressions mean the same thing.
“In Christ Jesus, in the Holy Spirit”—the meaning is the same. “Just as you were called in one hope of your calling.” One hope: one calling and one hope. “One Lord, one faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all.” This phrase, “who is above all, and through all, and in us all,” is like opening a universal canopy bearing the name “One” and covering everything.
It means that the Church is One. The Church is also One because the Lord said, “And there shall be one flock and one shepherd.” If there is to be one flock and one shepherd, how can we speak of many Churches? Here, of course, I should clarify something, because someone might ask: Are there not ten or fifteen parishes here in this city? How many are there—twenty parishes? How many are we, then? And do we not also speak of the Church of Larissa, the Church of Athens, and the Church of Thessaloniki? Do we not speak of the Church of Greece, the Church of Russia, the Church of Bulgaria, and the Church of Serbia? These are the local Churches.
They are, as the Apostle Paul puts it, “members individually”—members in part. The phrase “in part” refers to what is partial: the local Churches. But in essence the Church is One. Why? Because we celebrate one Holy Eucharist. Whether it is celebrated here or the Divine Liturgy is celebrated in the next Church and in the one beyond that, it is one Liturgy—in essence, one. And we have one Holy Communion: the Body and Blood of Christ. The faithful in this Church do not receive one Body and Blood of Christ while those elsewhere receive something different. Since it is always and everywhere the Body and Blood of Christ, provided that it is offered in the Orthodox manner—and I repeat, in the Orthodox manner, exactly as Christ commanded—then the Church is One.
We say, “In all things and for all things.” “Your own of Your own we offer to You, in all things and for all things.” Some people do not understand this little phrase—this half-phrase. “In all things” means, “Just as You commanded us.” We do exactly as You told us: “Do this; say these words.” It is an anamnesis, a remembrance, and so forth: “This is My Body.” Whatever You commanded, we do—in all things. And “for all things” has a temporal meaning: forever. Just as You commanded us, forever. That is what “in all things and for all things” means.
In earlier times, when the Church had not yet spread very widely, Christians tried to preserve this unity—the unity of the one Church—in an outward, visible form. What I am describing took place in the first century and at the beginning of the second. Saint Justin Martyr preserves an account of it for us in his Second Apology, if I remember correctly. Listen carefully to what he says.
On Sunday, “the day of the sun,” as Saint Justin calls it—for that was the name then used for Sunday. The expression has survived. You know that the Latins called it “the day of the sun,” and it remains in European languages, as in the English word Sunday, which means precisely that. Monday, in English, means the day of the moon. These were words and expressions inherited from the ancient pagan world. Saint Justin was writing his Apology to the Roman Senate and the Emperor, so, to make himself understood, he said, “the day of the sun.” For us, that day is Sunday—the Lord’s Day.
On that day, he says, we gather together. People come into the city even from the surrounding villages, and there was only one church. Because there was only one church in each city, with the bishop present and the people coming in from the villages, they offered a visible image of the Church’s oneness. The same thing happened in another city, and again in another. Of course, this arrangement could not continue for long as the number of believers increased. They would have needed a building large enough to hold a vast multitude. What kind of building could that have been? And if many church buildings were constructed, where would the bishop go? He would have to be here one time and there another. How could this be arranged? Listen, then.
Well...
There is a piece of cloth about this size—as I am showing you with my hands—roughly half a metre across, somewhat rectangular rather than square, which we call the antimension. Anti is a Greek word, while mensa in Latin means table. Thus antimension means “in place of the table”—that is, in place of the Holy Table—so that we may celebrate the Divine Liturgy anywhere. In earlier times, this cloth was fastened to a wooden board. The board was later discontinued, and only the cloth remained. Upon this cloth...
there are relics connected with the consecration of a church that has been consecrated by the local bishop. The bishop then takes these many antimensia, places upon them the seals of the Holy Metropolis, and signs them. It is a kind of certificate—forgive me for using such a word—certifying that the parish celebrates the Divine Liturgy by the bishop’s authorization. In this way, through the antimensia, the unity of the local Church is preserved.
Of course, even this practice has become somewhat weakened, because whenever the bishop changes, the antimensia ought to be changed as well; but we do not change them. Often, on the Holy Table, we have antimensia bearing the signatures of the previous bishop, the bishop before him, or even one still earlier. So this sign, too, has been somewhat weakened. I mention it to emphasize and show you that the Church is one, and that Christians have tried to preserve a visible image of her unity. Yet, strictly speaking, even this is somewhat more than necessary. The Church is one because there is one Lord and one Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Whether it is celebrated in Athens, Sofia, Belgrade, Antioch, Moscow, Alexandria, New York, or anywhere else by an Orthodox Archbishop, the Church is one. Let us continue. The Lord also said that He is the true vine. But there cannot be many true vines. There must be one true vine. Therefore, there is only one; no other possibility can be admitted. In His high-priestly prayer, the Lord said, “That they all may be one.” All are to be one.
How are we to understand this oneness? As the Apostle Paul says in one of his epistles, all are to be of the same mind: to have the same faith and the same Orthodox mind, to live the same faith and the same way of life, and to share the same mind. That is what it means for all to be one. I said earlier that the Church—but I shall say it again because of the words, “That they all may be one, even as We are one.” Listen to this word “as.” The whole weight of the saying rests upon it. All are to be one just as We are one. Who are “We”? I, the Son, the Father, and the Holy Spirit are one. “That they all may be one, even as We are one.” Therefore, the unity of the Church reflects—and here lies its principle, as I repeat...
It faithfully reflects the unity of the Holy Trinity. There, we have one essence and three persons; here, we have one essence, one body, and many persons. This is exceedingly important. I once told you—and it seems perhaps especially timely to mention it again—that in the Constitution...
the Greek Constitution, there was, I believe, in its first article, the phrase, “In the name of the Holy Trinity,” and so forth. That was how the Greek Constitution began. Today, “In the name of the Holy Trinity” is no longer first; it is third, or in some other place. It has been moved lower down and no longer stands first. As is customary, you know, lawyers interpret the Constitution and the laws. Yet perhaps they could never have imagined that...
this phrase was placed in the older Constitutions—though it is no longer there in that position, having been removed some ten or twenty years ago; I do not know exactly when—because it formed the key to the meaning of the Greek Constitution. Do you know why it was the key? Because the words “In the name of the Holy Trinity” invoke the Holy Trinity. They do not simply refer to the Triune God, nor are they there merely so that the Constitution and its application may be blessed, though certainly that is also true. Above all, as I have said, the phrase is the key. Its place there is not merely an invocation or pious wish; it provides the key to understanding that, just as the Holy Trinity...
—this is an interpretation—just as the Holy Trinity is one essence and three persons, so the Greek people should be one essence and many persons. What does this mean? It means that the Greek people should possess unity within the multiplicity of persons. That is why the phrase is the key. But by moving it from that place, we lost the key. My dear friends, it was not only necessary for it formally to stand first; its meaning also had to be interpreted. Then all education and formation—social formation, family formation, everything—should have served this purpose: that the Greek people might be one and united within a multiplicity of persons, without destroying the persons or suppressing personal human initiative. No, the persons are brought fully into view. This is why the Lord says, “That they all may be one, even as We are one.” All are to be one, just as We are one. Therefore, the dogma of the Holy Trinity is the prototype of the Church and of an Orthodox people...
who have accepted faith in the Holy Triune God. This is profoundly important—of the greatest possible importance. Yet I fear that, in times when we are drawing near to the coming of the Antichrist, these things may never return, and this key may be regarded as lost forever. That is what I fear. May it not be so, but I fear it. The Apostle Paul also expresses the unity of the Church by describing her as the Body of Christ, and also as a pure virgin who has been joined to Christ...
Joined to Christ. Let me explain. “Joined” is the Apostle Paul’s own word. It comes from a verb meaning to fit together or unite. If you ask where the central moment of the Mystery of Holy Matrimony lies, we know that the whole service is the Mystery; yet within the whole there is both a surrounding framework and a heart. In the same way, the whole Divine Liturgy is indeed the Liturgy, but its heart is the prayer of the Holy Anaphora. The rest of the Liturgy forms its surrounding framework, quite naturally. So too, Holy Matrimony has its heart and its framework. What, then, is the heart of the Mystery of Holy Matrimony?
The priest takes the man’s hand and the woman’s hand and joins them. He takes them and fits them together—that is, he unites them. Throughout the solemn blessing of the Mystery, the hands of the newlyweds remain joined together. Now pay attention. The Apostle Paul says that he plays the role of a sponsor, the one who brings the bride and bridegroom together. I do not know whether you have ever heard this before. Saint John the Baptist also played such a role. Paul says, “I joined the Church to Christ.” How did he do this?
He did it with the Church of Corinth. When he preached Christ and the Corinthians came to believe, he was already preparing the bride and presenting her to the Bridegroom. Paul, then, is the sponsor, because he is the one who joins them together. Would you like another example? Saint John the Baptist. He says, “I am not the Bridegroom; I am the friend of the Bridegroom.” And what did the friend of the Bridegroom do? He prepared the bride. He baptized the people so that Christ might now receive this bride. Thus Saint John the Baptist is also a kind of sponsor. You see here this joining together. It is exceedingly important.
The Church is joined to Christ. We also have another image: the image of a building. The Apostle says that it is “fitted together and growing into a holy temple in the Lord.” Its foundation is Christ. Thus one stone is laid upon another. In other words, you yourselves, he says, are living stones—living stones from which the Church is built. The Church is also called the house of God and the temple of God; hence the living stones that build the house of God, the temple of God.
There is also one Bread. I have already mentioned this, but I shall say it once more. In the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, the Eucharistic Bread is one. Do not tell me that there are as many loaves as there are churches. The Bread is one. The Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10:17, “We who are many are one bread, one body.” We who are many, he says, are one bread and one body, “for we all partake of that one bread.” For all of us, every one of us, partake of this one Bread.
Wherever we receive Holy Communion—whether in New York, Moscow, Athens, or Larissa—we receive the Body and Blood of Christ. The Bread is one. There is a very beautiful prayer in the Didache of the Twelve Apostles, that most ancient book I have mentioned to you. This prayer is also used, I believe, in the Liturgy of Saint Clement of Rome. Listen to what it says: “As this broken bread was scattered upon the mountains and, being gathered together, became one, so may Your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth into Your Kingdom.” This bread, this piece of bread, was once grain harvested from stalks growing on mountainsides or sown in the plains. The grain was sown, reaped, and gathered; and the many grains of wheat were made into one loaf, which is now here before us. Just as it was once scattered and has now been gathered into one loaf, one bread, so, the prayer says, may Your Church be gathered from the ends of the whole inhabited earth into Your Kingdom. It is a very beautiful prayer, revealing the unity of the Church. The Church, then, is a visible reality. Pay attention: a visible reality.
But let us pay attention to this, because in the name of this one Church—and here I want you to pay close attention during the few minutes we have left—devious theories are being forged. Let me explain. This is not new to our age; it is old, dating from shortly before the fall of Constantinople. But now it has assumed very alarming proportions. An effort is being made to unite the Churches. The argument is this: Christ said, “There will be one flock and one shepherd.” Christ said that the Church is one.
The argument, therefore, is that we must unite with one another. But what do we mean by this union when, for example, the so-called Papal Church proposes it to the Orthodox? How are we to understand this?
The Protestant world also extends a hand of union—the Protestant world, fragmented into so many pieces. How are we to understand this? Well, this union is understood in the following way. Pay attention. It is like a mechanical union.
Give me your hand, madam; give me your hand, madam—and now we have formed a lovely circle. Since we are standing with joined hands, let us dance the Kalamatianos. This union is mechanical; it is outward. None of the Churches gives up anything when seeking union with another. Each gives up nothing and retains what it already has. When Rome proposes union with us, Rome herself gives up nothing. Union is understood in the following way—and never forget it.
A fruit receives nutrients from the earth through the roots, the trunk, and its stem, and it grows from within outward. You see, the watermelon inside the flower is very small. Then it begins to grow; the flower falls away, and the watermelon grows. How does the fruit grow? How does the watermelon grow? Does it grow because we attach something to it from the outside? No. It receives nutrients and grows from within outward, transforming the nutrients it receives into whatever it needs. What does an embryo in its mother’s womb receive? It receives nourishment and grows. Do we give it anything from the outside?
It receives nourishment from its mother. How does it receive it? Through her blood, and so forth. What does this mean? Or take the example of how we ourselves are nourished. How do we eat? We put food into our stomach. What does our stomach then do with that food? Does it send the food directly to the cells? No, it does not.
Bread, cheese, wine—will it send bread, cheese, and wine to the cells? No, the food will be transformed into blood. Our liver will take the nourishment and transform it into blood, and the blood, with the help of the heart—am I saying this correctly, my dear doctors?—will carry it to the cells. The cells will receive the blood, nourishment that has been transformed. For if I were to put food directly into my cells—if you injected milk, cheese, or wine into my side—we would die immediately. Would I survive? Would I not die? So please pay attention. This means that whatever is received must cause the fruit to grow from within outward. That is to say...
You take another person—a secular person, whoever he may be, whether Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist—and you catechize him. After catechizing him, you baptize him in the true Orthodox faith. Then, and only then, he is united with the Church; and after he has been baptized, he receives the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. You know that we do not give our infants Holy Communion before baptizing them. This is called growth from within. This is how the Church grows. This is how she receives the world, transforms it in its very elements, remakes it, and makes it alive within the Church. But if she takes something in merely from the outside...
That is called the secularization of the Church. Or do you disagree? That is what it is called. When I take the other person exactly as he is, boots and all, as the saying goes, then I secularize the Church. So how are we to understand the union of the Churches? How are we to understand it? Shall I go on? Please pay close attention to one point here—right here.
Well...
There is a theory called the Branch Theory—the theory of the branches. It is very much on the agenda in our time. It holds that each Church—Orthodoxy, Protestantism in all its fragments, and the Roman Catholic Church—has preserved certain elements of the truth. The truth, therefore, is fragmented. Thus, to possess the full and complete truth, the Churches must unite. But then we would have to ask: how can we say in the Creed, “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church”? The word “apostolic” in particular—as we shall see—is extremely important, because it signifies the Apostolic Tradition. For this theory would mean that our Church does not possess the whole truth. And if she does not possess the whole truth, then she cannot save. According to this theory, only the union of the Churches can save.
We are supposed to unite the separate fragments of truth in order to possess the truth. I scarcely need to tell you, my dear ones, that this is a dreadful blasphemy. There is not the slightest trace of truth or reality in this theory, and yet it is presently on the agenda. It is not especially new; it goes back several decades, but it remains on the agenda. Then there is something else: the notorious ecumenism. Ecumenism speaks of a unity among the Churches, among Christian bodies. But this unity is entirely outward. It is just as I told you: let us join hands and begin dancing the Kalamatianos. But when the dance is over, we let go of one another’s hands, and once again we are not united. When...
Such tiles may represent the Orthodox, the Papists, or the Protestants, but they say that we must create a single religion—not Christian unity, but one religion. Then, alongside these three parts of Christianity—Orthodoxy, Protestantism, and Roman Catholicism or Papism—they will add the other religions. If you remember, about twenty years ago—those of you with a good memory—a government minister published a series of newspaper articles which, quite plainly, favored...
The union of Orthodoxy with Islam.
Indeed. Indeed, this was because we wanted good relations with the Arabs, the Muslims, and so forth, especially with the Egyptians—who at that time, if you remember, and if I remember correctly, were expelling the Greeks from Egypt. Now listen; you need not look far. The current Patriarch—I am sorry to say this—said, and it was published in the newspaper, as many of you will have read, that Muhammad was an Apostle of God. If this is how we speak... Who said it? An Orthodox Patriarch. If we asked him, “Come now, why do you say this?”
He might answer, “But how are we to maintain our position in a country such as Egypt, where the people are Muslim? We have to make certain diplomatic maneuvers.” What compromises these are! And what happened to martyrdom? Where has martyrdom gone? At a deeper level, however, at a far more profound level, the reality is that we are serving ecumenism. Thus Islam will be brought in, Buddhism will be brought in, and all the Eastern religions as well. You will also have seen the photograph of that strange common prayer—this confusion, this mixture—among leaders of many of the world’s religions. This is nothing other than...
A preparation, a form of preliminary training. These are drills and exercises teaching us how to advance toward ecumenism. Ecumenism invokes the unity of the Church and of humanity, saying that the Church is one, but without the Buddhist giving up Buddha, without the Muslim giving up Muhammad, and so forth. These things are incomprehensible; they show the condition to which we have come. But ecumenism, as has very rightly been denounced, has been characterized as the pan-heresy. It is the broad road leading directly to the Antichrist. Take note of this. As someone... I have a book...
It tells of those who changed the language. “We will use no accent marks,” they say, “and no spelling rules; then everything will simply be written as we hear it, and there will be no way to make a mistake.” Well, of course. In other words, I can no longer make a mistake; I cannot make a spelling mistake because there is no longer any standard against which I can fall short. If I am already sitting down on the floor, can I fall? If I flatten the language completely, can I make a mistake? It is the same here. This is a dreadful thing, a dreadful thing. It is the final heresy, because there can be no other heresy beyond it. There cannot. Call it whatever you wish. But you may ask me, “How do you know? Other heresies may arise.” Yet can there be anything more extreme than uniting all religions exactly as they are, without changing anything, while everyone retains his own beliefs?
Can there be anything greater than that? No. Therefore, it is the final heresy in history and the highway that leads, my dear ones, to the Antichrist. In the end, the Antichrist will do the following: once all humanity has been led to the Antichrist along the highway of ecumenism, so that no groups of resistance remain—pay attention—no groups of resistance anywhere in the whole world, then the Antichrist will not allow even this system to remain. He will abolish it. He will abolish the very structure of ecumenism and declare that...
The religions had been waiting to reach their goal and find the Messiah. “I am the Messiah.” Then, as the Apostle Paul says, he will build the Temple of Solomon, sit in the Temple of God, and present himself as God. The Apostle Paul says this in his Epistle to the Thessalonians. You see, then, that we are moving toward ecumenism; ecumenism itself will then be abolished, and the Antichrist will be revealed as God. You understand, my dear ones, that all these things are exceedingly serious. We are speaking about the unity of the Church, about the Church being one; but this does not mean that this truth should be exploited. I have told you...
We have reached this dreadful subject, this dreadful theory, where people speak of the union of the Churches in this way. I do not know how to say it to you, but I will say it: resist it for as long as you live, and tell your children to do the same. Resist, if tomorrow it begins to be promoted more openly. It is already being promoted. Ecumenism has almost taken over the Church in America. Yes, it has almost taken over the Church in America, because the Archbishop is an ecumenist. I am not saying anything new, nor am I insulting
or slandering anyone. It is well known. You understand, then, what it means if tomorrow an Archbishop comes who is an ecumenist: we shall go from Scylla to Charybdis. So be extremely careful. These are exceedingly delicate and exceedingly important matters. What is coming tomorrow will make the things of today, however dreadful they may be, seem pale by comparison. They will pale by comparison. Therefore, the people of God must remain constantly watchful in matters of their faith and concerning those who are its guardians...
the guardians of their faith. For is not every parish priest in a village the guardian of the faith among the flock God has entrusted to him? In that small place called a village, whether it has one hundred, two hundred, five hundred, or a thousand souls, is he not the guardian of that village, the guardian of the true faith? Pay close attention to this. Since shepherds turn into wolves, as the Lord says, and watchmen into traitors, as the Lord says, we must be exceedingly careful. These things unfold over the long term.
Ecumenism is a great, great danger—the final danger. There is no greater danger, as I have told you. Saint Justin Popovich calls it the pan-heresy. We must be very watchful concerning ecumenism. Do not say, “Is it not a good thing?” Do you know what arguments are used—what supposedly logical and attractive arguments—in favor of the union of the Churches? Why should we not desire peace? Why should we not be united? Why not? All these things sound so beautiful. Does God not want us to be united? Take care. There is also the peace of robbers and the peace of demons. This is not the peace of God, nor is it the unity of God. We must therefore stand firm and remain whole in our faith.
We must understand that the Church is one, exactly as the Synods defined her and as this was set down in the Creed: “I believe in one Church,” just as...

Ηρμοσμένη τω Χριστώ. Να τα εξηγήσω. Ηρμοσμένη είναι δική του λέξη, στον Απόστολο Παύλο. Είναι από το αρμόζω. Θα πει ταιριάζω. Αν ερωτήσετε σε ποιο σημείο έχουμε το κέντρο του μυστηρίου του γάμου, γιατί είναι γνωστό ότι δεν είναι ολόκληρο το μυστήριο του γάμου, ολόκληρο είναι, αλλά είναι το πλαίσιο και η καρδία. Όπως και η Θεία Λειτουργία ολόκληρη είναι, αλλά η καρδία της Θείας Λειτουργίας είναι η ευχή της Αγίας Αναφοράς. Το υπόλοιπο της Λειτουργίας αποτελεί το πλαίσιο, πολύ φυσικό. Έτσι και εδώ, ο γάμος έχει την καρδία του και το πλαίσιό του. Ποια είναι η καρδία του μυστηρίου του γάμου;
Ο ιερεύς παίρνει το χέρι του ανδρός και το χέρι της γυναικός και τα αρμόζει. Τα παίρνει και τα αρμόζει, δηλαδή τα ενώνει. Και καθ' όλο το μήκος της ιερολογήσεως του μυστηρίου μένουν τα χέρια των νεονύμφων ηρμοσμένα, δηλαδή ενωμένα. Προσέξτε τώρα εδώ. Λέγει ο Απόστολος Παύλος ότι εγώ παίζω ένα ρόλο κουμπάρου. Δεν ξέρω αν ποτέ το ακούσατε αυτό. Ένα ρόλο κουμπάρου. Όπως και ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Βαπτιστής έχει παίξει ένα ρόλο κουμπάρου. Εγώ, λέγει, ήρμοσα την Εκκλησία με τον Χριστό. Πώς;
Το επιχείρημα, συνεπώς, πρέπει να ενωθούμε μεταξύ μας. Αλλά πώς εννοούμε αυτή την ένωση όταν, επί παραδείγματι, προτείνει αυτή την ένωση στους Ορθοδόξους η λεγόμενη Παπική Εκκλησία; Πώς το εννοούμε αυτό;
Όπως ένας καρπός προσλαμβάνει ουσίες διαμέσου του μίσχου και του κορμού του φυτού από τη γη διά των ριζών και μεγαλώνει εκ των έσω προς τα έξω. Βλέπετε, το καρπούζι μέσα στο λουλούδι είναι πολύ μικρό. Μετά αρχίζει να μεγαλώνει, πέφτει το λουλούδι, μεγαλώνει. Ο καρπός πώς μεγαλώνει; Το καρπούζι πώς μεγαλώνει; Μεγαλώνει γιατί του βάζουμε, δηλαδή, κάτι απ' έξω εμείς; Όχι. Αυτό παίρνει ουσίες και μεγαλώνει εκ των έσω προς τα έξω. Τις ουσίες δε που παίρνει τις μετασχηματίζει σε αυτό που χρειάζεται. Το έμβρυον μέσα στην κοιλιά της μάνας του τι παίρνει; Παίρνει τροφή και μεγαλώνει. Του δίνουμε τίποτε απ' έξω εμείς;
Εκδιηγείται εκείνους που άλλαξαν τη γλώσσα. «Δεν βάζουμε», λέει, «τόνους, δεν βάζουμε ορθογραφία, οπότε», λέγει, «δεν έχεις να πέσεις, όταν όλα γίνονται όπως τα ακούμε». Ε, βέβαια. Δηλαδή δεν κάνω λάθος πια, ορθογραφικά λάθη δεν κάνω, αφού δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να πέσω. Όταν είμαι στο πάτωμα, είμαι χάμω, κάθομαι, έχω περίπτωση να πέσω; Όταν ισοπεδώσω τη γλώσσα, έχω περίπτωση να κάνω λάθος; Έτσι και εδώ πέρα. Φοβερό πράγμα αυτό, φοβερό. Είναι η τελευταία αίρεση, γιατί δεν υπάρχει άλλη αίρεσις. Δεν υπάρχει. Ό,τι θέλετε πείτε. Μα θα μου πείτε: «Πού το ξέρεις; Μπορεί να υπάρξουν άλλες αιρέσεις». Μα υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη περίπτωση από το να ενωθούν οι θρησκείες όπως είναι, χωρίς να αλλάξουν τίποτα, να κρατάει ο καθένας το δικό του;
