Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem distinguishes the Church of Christ from an ordinary assembly, such as the crowd gathered in the Ephesian theater. The Creed calls believers to remain in the one, holy, catholic Church and to reject heretical bodies such as the Marcionites and Manichaeans. The earthly Church reflects the heavenly Jerusalem and orders her worship after heavenly realities, as the biblical tabernacle was fashioned according to the pattern revealed to Moses.

We are still in the eighteenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, at paragraph 26, and I shall continue with the subject of the Church. Let us recall that Saint Cyril is pressed for time. That is why he does not say very much about this immensely important subject of the Church—at least, not as much as I would have expected, since he could have given us many more points. Of course, this material has also been preserved by other Fathers who examine the subject of the Church and theologize about it.

What I mean is this: every Father has his own way of expressing things and sees a particular aspect or side of the matter. He therefore brings his own perspective to this great subject, as to every other subject, and so enriches it. We might say that we are a little poorer because Saint Cyril did not tell us more. This certainly does not mean that we lack sufficient teaching about the Church, so that we are left in ignorance and unable to be saved. Far from it; that is not what we mean. We mean only that our theology and the body of writing on this subject would have been richer if he too had said more about it.

Since we ourselves are giving catechetical instruction, allow me to say that we are not pressed for time. Therefore, God willing, after I have covered everything Saint Cyril tells us about the Church, we shall say something more. We shall consider why the Church is called One, why she is called Holy, and why she is called Apostolic—even though the term “Apostolic” is not contained in the Jerusalem Creed, but is contained in the Nicene Creed. So we shall add a few things ourselves. I shall now read the text. This is paragraph 26, on page 242, for those of you who have the book.

“Since the name ‘church’ is used of various things—as it is written even of the crowd in the theater of the Ephesians, ‘And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly’—and since one might improperly and falsely call the wicked societies of the heretics ‘churches,’ by which I mean the Marcionites, the Manichaeans, and the rest, the faith has therefore given you this safeguard in the words, ‘And in one, holy, catholic Church,’ so that you may flee their defiled societies and remain always in the holy catholic Church, in which you were also born anew.” He says:

The name “Church” is used of various things—or, better, in various contexts. Saint Cyril refers to an incident in the Book of Acts. Paul had arrived in Ephesus and was preaching there. A certain Demetrius owned what today we might call a workshop, which made votive offerings, little statues, and similar objects of the goddess Artemis. He employed a large workforce, and he realized that if the city became Christian, his business would suffer. So, we are told, he stirred up the whole city, claiming that

the goddess Artemis was in danger. The people—the mob—shouted in the open-air theater, “Great is Artemis,” the goddess Artemis of the Ephesians. “Great is Artemis!” they kept shouting for a long time. Then the city clerk came forward...

Uh...

Saint Cyril puts it this way: “It is written even of the crowd in the theater of the Ephesians, ‘And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.’” The city clerk said a few things, but first he let them go on shouting and shouting until they had vented their anger. How could he have dared to address them in any other way? Whatever he might have done to quiet the crowd would have been impossible. And so...

He let them carry on until they had shouted themselves hoarse and grown tired. Then he stepped up to the platform and said, “Gentlemen, why are you causing this uproar? Even if Demetrius has business interests at stake, must we throw the whole city into turmoil? There are courts, and you may take the matter before them. There is no need to stir up the city and nearly cause a revolt over this affair.” After saying this, we are told, he persuaded the crowd: “And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.” In other words, he dismissed it and broke it up. What was this “church,” this assembly? It was that gathering of the people. What name was given to this gathering? An assembly—a church.

Do not forget the Assembly of the Athenians either. They would gather up on the Pnyx, for example, to deliberate and conduct their affairs. It was called the Assembly of the Athenians. So what else can the word “church” mean? It means that the people are called together in one place for a particular purpose. The word comes from “out” and “to call”: to call out, hence “church” or “assembly.” Unfortunately, however, this is a very incomplete definition. What is the Church? “A gathering of the people,” someone says. If we had to say that at all, it should be the last thing we said.

Let me pose a question. The Church is gathered here now. When we leave and return to our homes, we shall no longer be assembled together in one place. Will the Church then have been dissolved? Will the Church cease to exist? The Church is something much, much deeper. The Church of Christ is the Body of Christ. We shall examine some of these things, though not today. The Church, therefore, is not merely a gathering of the people; she is something far deeper. Let us understand this, beloved, because it is exceedingly important. Only when we know what the Church is can we truly value her, especially in view of all that has been said, and continues to be said, about the Churches.

These conclusions, always mistaken, arise from a mistaken understanding. At the time of the Polytechnic uprising, people said, “Where was the Church?” Or they ask, “When the Church sees what is happening among our people, what is she doing?” But who is the Church? You may be sure that such people do not know what the Church is. Some imagine that the Church is the Metropolitan’s residence, or only the church building, or merely the governing hierarchy. For example, when they ask, “What is the Church doing?” they mean the Archbishop and the members of the Synod. My beloved, these positions are mistaken precisely because we do not know what the Church is.

Let me tell you from the outset that there is no perfect definition of the Church. That is true. No Father has handed down to us a perfect definition of the Church. Why? Because the Church is, ontologically, the mystical Body of Christ—not merely as an idea, but in her very being, ontologically, the mystical Body of Christ. Therefore, she is a Mystery. And because she is a Mystery, she cannot be confined within a definition. Yet if we ever come to understand what this Church is, as far as we are able—namely, that she is the mystical Body of Christ...

Take, for example, the holy diskos. Upon it are the portions commemorating the living and the departed, and there we behold the mystical Body of Christ. When we celebrate the Divine Liturgy upon the Holy Table, we serve over the relics of Saints, because this is how our Church consecrates her altars: upon the relics of Saints. And the Saints are present, not simply because we possess their relics, but because they have already been incorporated into the Body of Christ. Then, when the Divine Liturgy has been completed, we perform what is called the gathering of the Holy Gifts: we take the contents of the holy diskos and place them in the holy chalice—not only the Lamb, and not only the portion of the Theotokos (God-bearer), or those of the Saints and the angels, and so forth,

but also the portions of the living and the departed. And we say, “Wash away, O Lord, the transgressions and sins of Your servants who have been commemorated, in Your own Blood.” Do you see? Do you see the mystical Body of Christ? Who can define it? Who can say what this is? Thus, in her essence and deepest reality, the Church remains beyond definition. And since whatever cannot be defined... Pay attention, and I shall explain what “definition” means. A definition applies to something that can be bounded—that is, something with limits. And when something is bounded, it can be comprehended.

The Church would therefore cease to be a Mystery if she could be defined, because then she could be comprehended. But because she cannot be comprehended, mastered, or fully understood, she cannot have a definition. No boundary can be placed around her, and Mysteries cannot be defined. Something that has no definition is described through circumlocutions—that is, through various expressions that allow us to approach it. You can see this in the following way: you know that the Church is identified with the Kingdom of God. Who can define the Kingdom of God? Who can set bounds around it?

The Lord Himself spoke the language of human beings, and therefore a created language. He did not speak to them with ineffable, uncreated words, but with created words, because the words of the Gospel are created, not uncreated. They had to be offered to created human beings. It was not that the Lord was unable to speak about the Church or the Kingdom of God. But because He was speaking to created human beings, to created beings, He had to speak in a created and therefore imperfect language. That is why you will see that He gives...

a whole series of parables, saying, “To what shall I liken the Kingdom of Heaven?” To what shall I compare the Kingdom of God? Do you notice the question? “To what shall I compare it?” A comparison is an approach. And He makes these comparisons through parables: a dragnet, this image, that image. If I remember correctly, there are eight parables in this series concerning the Kingdom of God. But take note: even there the subject is not exhausted—not even there. He gives this series of parables precisely to show that He is speaking about certain aspects of the Kingdom of God, of the Church, without exhausting the subject. The very use of a parable shows the absence of a definition. And let us not forget that although a parable cannot provide a definition, it has one advantage: it can make its answer rich. A parable allows you to say many things, whereas a definition does not, because a definition confines you. It tells you, “This is what the thing is,” and permits nothing further. You see, then, that we are dealing with realities that are so great and so profound. But let us continue.

Saint Cyril next speaks of the assembly of the wicked, which he had already mentioned in an earlier paragraph and which we examined there. After Christ—that is, after the establishment of the Church... Did the Church not come to earth with Christ? The Incarnation is the Church. Did you hear that? The Incarnation is the Church. We might say that the Church of Christ was inaugurated on earth with what we call Christmas. Yet that was her inauguration, not the day of Pentecost. Pentecost is the manifestation of the Church. The Incarnation, however, is her foundation—her Christological foundation.

Another foundation was also needed, the pneumatological foundation, which was laid at Pentecost. Yet even the expression “laid at Pentecost” is inadequate, because during His life on earth the Lord, in His human nature, was never without the Holy Spirit. That is why I say that one hardly knows how to put these things into words. The moment you try to say or express something, another consideration tells you, “You said it wrongly; you said it wrongly.” It is difficult. And what are we to say? Was there no Church in the Old Testament? It was not merely a church consisting of God and the Hebrews, but the Church of the righteous, which is incorporated into the Church of Christ, and so forth. You see? This is an immense subject, an exceedingly profound one.

The Church, as I was telling you—if I remember correctly, I may already have said this—is coeternal with God, because she is the communion of the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. Can you tell me whether there was ever a time when the Persons of the Holy Trinity were not in communion? Was there ever a time when the Father was alone? Neither the Father, nor the Son, nor the Holy Spirit has ever been alone. Therefore, the Church is coeternal with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. You know, everything I am telling you should fill us with awe whenever we speak of the Church.

If we set ourselves against the Church, insult the Church, revile the Church, or persecute the Church, it is a fearful and dreadful thing. “It is hard for you to kick against the goads,” the Lord said to Paul. And when Paul asked Him, “Lord, who are You?” the Lord replied, “Why are you persecuting Me?” Do you see? He did not say, “You are persecuting the Church.” He said, “Why are you persecuting Me?” Paul was persecuting the Church, because the Church is Christ; she is the Body of Christ. Do you see? Do you see? And yet there are people who say they believe in Christ while they persecute or revile the Church. The least we could say of them

is that they are ignorant. But is such ignorance permissible? Can it be excused? Certainly not. So, what is this “assembly of evildoers”? Remember what we said last time: from the moment Christ “founded”—in quotation marks—His Church upon the earth through His Incarnation, the assembly of the Jews, which was preparing to convene in order to bring about the death of Jesus, ceased to be the Church and became nothing more than an assembly of evildoers. The Psalmist calls it “an assembly of evildoers.” And whenever we see people conspiring against Christ, against the Church, or against the faithful...

in reality, this is nothing more than an assembly of evildoers. Thus God abandoned what had been called the Church in the Old Testament. Christ is now the new and true vine: “I am the true vine.” And the former assembly automatically becomes an assembly of evildoers. Yet the Jewish assembly of evildoers, which we discussed last time, is not the only such assembly. There is another assembly of evildoers—not “Church” in the biblical sense, but an assembly in the ordinary sense of a gathering of people. Who are they? Listen to what Saint Cyril says: they are the organized bodies of the heretics.

“I mean the Marcionites, the Manichaeans, and the rest.” He was, of course, referring to the Gnostics of his time. These were the various heresies, we might say, the various forms of Gnosticism. The Marcionites were founded by Marcion—that dreadful Marcion, the most dangerous of all the Gnostics. Then there were the Manichaeans, and so on and so forth. There are, of course, very many forms of Gnosticism, each named after the founder of its particular system and each differing in some way from the others. These, he says, constitute the assembly of evildoers. They cannot constitute the Church. For this reason, as a rule...

“To safeguard you, the faith has handed down to you the words, ‘And in one, holy, catholic Church.’” The faith has handed this down to you so that you may distinguish her from the assembly of evildoers and know that the Church to which you belong is one, holy, and catholic; that she is the Body of Christ, and so forth. This is precisely so that you may flee their defiled systems: “That you may flee their defiled systems.” You must avoid them. “But remain in the holy catholic Church, in which you were also born anew.” You must remain forever in the one, holy, catholic Church, the Church in which you were born anew.

You were born anew through Baptism, in the baptismal font. A little further on, as we shall see, Saint Cyril tells us that the Church is the mother of us all. The Apostle Paul says this in his Epistle to the Galatians. This is how the Church becomes the mother of us all: you were born anew there, within the Church. Therefore, you must remain there forever; you must never leave the Church. And he goes on to say, “If at some time you are staying in various cities.” That is, if you are traveling and find yourself in another city...

“In whatever cities”—cities in the plural—you may visit. As you travel, you want to attend church, as we ourselves do. And with what zeal! We say, “We are going to Europe and will stay for a month; let us not miss the opportunity to attend church.” As soon as we see a church, or some building that looks like a church, we go inside and venerate. But just any church? Are we certain that it is the Church of Christ? Are we certain? Please keep this as a practical example, because we Orthodox Greeks often travel to Europe, and many people ask me what they should do and where they should attend church. So listen carefully to what Saint Cyril now says: “Do not simply ask where the house of the Lord is.”

“For even the heretics dare to call their own dens houses of the Lord. Nor should you ask simply where the Church is, but where the Catholic Church is.” What does he mean here? The Greek word Kyriakon, as you know, is still used on the Holy Mountain. It is the church that receives the faithful on the Lord’s Day, Sunday, because the community is a skete throughout the week. Is its principal church called a katholikon or a kyriakon? The two terms complement one another; they are not identical. Katholikon here means the place where all the monks gather. Kyriakon means...

the place where they gather on Sunday. On weekdays, whether to avoid unnecessary wear on the church, or because some are away and only a few are present, they do not use a great church in which five people would almost disappear. For various practical reasons, they use smaller churches—perhaps one in a monastery wing, one within a cell, or a chapel in the courtyard. In any case, they do not use the central church. Thus the church that receives the monks on Sunday is called the Kyriakon, including monks from the surrounding area who live outside the monastery in sketes. It is called the Kyriakon. Today the word is not widely known or commonly used. And

someone may have gone to the Holy Mountain without understanding it. Saint Cyril says here that the heretics also call the building where they gather on Sunday a kyriakon. But take care, he says: these places are nothing more than dens of robbers, yet they dare to call these dens of robbers kyriaka, houses of the Lord, claiming that they are the Lord’s churches where people gather on Sunday. So take care not to be deceived by the name. You know, as I have told you, very often when we travel in Europe...

someone enters a Catholic church—that is, a Roman Catholic church. Forgive me, but properly speaking it should not be called Catholic. We speak of the Orthodox Catholic Church. Their body should be called the Papal Church, the Roman or Papal Church. Not even “Roman”—many people go too far in calling it that. It is called the Papal Church. We call them Catholics only by loose usage. Take careful note of this. So a person enters a Catholic—that is, Roman Catholic, or papal—church. Or he enters a Protestant meetinghouse, since Protestants do not wish to have churches. Anglicans, of course, do have churches. Anglican Protestants, as far as their background is concerned...

and so on and so forth. Where are you entering? Have you investigated? What were you told when you asked or tried to find out where a church was? Be careful. If you enter as a tourist simply to see what the interior looks like, no, that is not a sin. But if you remain for their service—and much more if you participate—what Mysteries would you be participating in? What can I say? Shall I speak of the Protestants, whose Mysteries have no valid foundation because they do not have Holy Orders? The Anglicans claim Holy Orders, but their orders are disputed. Quite simply, we should not enter any place of worship we happen to find, because doing so in this manner is a grave sin. And I tell you that among the Protestants, as I repeat...

is it even the Body and Blood of Christ? Protestants not only lack Holy Orders, and therefore their Mysteries have no valid foundation, but they also do not accept that Mysteries such as the Holy Eucharist are truly the Body and Blood of Christ. They say it is a symbol, or whatever else they may claim. There are various theories of this kind. Therefore, it is not even the Body and Blood of Christ precisely because they do not believe it to be so, and whatever remains they pour down the sink. You understand, then, that they are right to pour it down the sink, since it is nothing. But how could you go there to receive communion? Moreover, the Canons expressly forbid attending worship or joining in prayer in such a place

that is not Orthodox, together with heretics. The Canons expressly forbid it. Now, if you ask me what is to be made of all that is happening, I would answer: these are the fabrications of modern ecumenism, which is preparing and opening the way—alas—for the humiliation and degradation of Orthodoxy. We must be extremely careful, because through these approaches they seek to destroy her, and these approaches are profane and demonic. Let us understand this and exercise great care. They tell us that we are fanatics when we defend these things. This is not fanaticism; it is knowledge of the truth.

When the Lord said that true worshippers “must worship in spirit and in truth,” and when John the Evangelist speaks of “love in truth,” truth is essential. You cannot simply speak of love, love, and then say that anyone who does not show such love is ruled by the passions, because this love must be in truth. My brother, if your neighbor asked to have your wife for one night, would you give her to him out of love? Would you feel sorry for him and say, “The poor man has asked me, and I love him very much. Take my wife for one night”?

Could anyone even conceive of such a thing? What would that be? Would it be love? Would it be truth? Truth in what sense? How could the holiness of the Mystery of Holy Matrimony tolerate such a thing? And furthermore, if you wish, this is also innate in us. Even apart from the holiness of Holy Matrimony, is it not natural for a man to want his wife to be his own and not offer her to another? We find this even among monogamous animals. If someone reaches the point of doing otherwise, he is perverted. And he is perverted not only from a Christian perspective but, if you will permit me, even from the perspective of nature. For the human being is monogamous. Yes, yes, that is so. The human being is not polygamous. How, then, can we keep speaking of love, love, apart from truth? Love in truth.

Let us not forget this. So be careful when you travel somewhere, when you pass through a city; be careful where you go. You must seek the true Church. “Do not simply ask where the Church is, but where the Catholic Church is. For this is the distinctive name of this holy Church, the mother of us all.” This is her distinctive name: she is Catholic, she is holy, and she is our Mother, the Mother of us all. She is the bride of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-Begotten Son of God. “For it is written: ‘Just as Christ also loved the Church and gave Himself for her,’” and all that follows. These words are placed in parentheses. “She also bears the type and likeness of the Jerusalem above, which is free and is the mother of us all; she who was formerly barren but now has many children.”

For today, then, we shall pass over this point. Saint Cyril mentions only in passing what it means that the Church is the bride of Christ, and we shall examine these things another time. That is enough for now. Let us remain with what he says,

that

The Church has the Jerusalem above as her pattern and likeness. The Jerusalem above is none other than the Church. The historical Jerusalem—the Jerusalem below, the one we board a plane to visit—is a type of the Jerusalem above. The Evangelist Luke emphasizes this in a very particular way in the Apocalypse—Luke, forgive me, John—in the Apocalypse. “I saw,” he says, “the bride of Christ, the Church, the Jerusalem above, descending from heaven, adorned,” and so forth.

And so, the Jerusalem below, the historical Jerusalem, is the city called “the city of the great king,” namely, David. Take note: David did not build Jerusalem; he conquered it. Jerusalem already existed when the Hebrews came into the land of Palestine. The Jebusites had built it, and it was a fortified city. That is why the Hebrews were unable to conquer it. Just think: three or four hundred years—centuries—passed, and Jerusalem remained unconquered. David finally captured it. And for this reason they called it...

The Hebrews, in honor of their king, called it “the city of the great king.” This phrase also appears in the New Testament, when the Lord says, “You cannot swear even by the city of the great king.” You may not swear by Jerusalem either, the city of the great king. Therefore, this historical Jerusalem is a type of the heavenly Jerusalem, which is the Church. Thus, the earthly Church has as her pattern, her model—her likeness, as he calls it here—the Jerusalem above. What they do there, we do here.

Let me remind you of something related to a question that was raised; we shall discuss it next Monday during the questions. When God called Moses to Sinai, He did not, of course, give him only the Ten Commandments. Moses remained there for forty days and forty nights. God gave him many, many ordinances. One of these concerned how he was to make the things God had described to him: how to construct the ark, what to place inside it, what materials it was to be made from, what the Tabernacle of Testimony was to be like, and what length, width, and height the ark was to have—in other words, its precise dimensions, and so forth.

The Apostle Paul tells us that God said to Moses, “See—take care—that you make them according to the prototypes you were shown.” God, then, must have shown him the prototypes on Sinai. “You are to make the antitypes. Look carefully; take heed; see that you make them exactly.” Today we might say, “I do not like this table. It is too small, so I will make it larger; it is too large, so I will make it smaller. I will use this color because I like it—or I do not like it, so I will make it blue.” But God even specified the colors of the vestments. You know this: He specified even the colors. He specified everything—the kind of thread from which they were to be made and countless other details. Why? Because they were antitypes of heavenly realities, modeled upon their prototypes. Thus, we might say that the Old Testament reflects the eternal prototypes. In the same way, the Church is none other than... The earthly Church is a likeness of the Jerusalem above. She imitates what exists there, but in a fuller and more exact manner, because we no longer have the sacrifice of animals and the like. We have the Blood of Christ; we have the Body of Christ.

So tell me honestly: if someone wished to see the Church as she truly is, how should he see her? Suppose scandals arise within the Church, with unworthy clergy or unworthy faithful, or people say to someone, “And look at you making such a grand sign of the Cross,” along with many similar remarks. That accusation is not always fair. Sometimes the person making a grand sign of the Cross is inconsistent in his life, and so the criticism is justified. But at other times the critics themselves live a half-hearted Christianity. My beloved, they envy the person who lives a spiritual life and properly makes the sign of the Cross, and they say to him, “Look at you making such grand signs of the Cross.” All such things, my beloved...

cause many people to stumble, whether justly or unjustly. But tell me: do you realize that the Church, in her essence, is spotless, having neither blemish nor wrinkle? A wrinkle is a crease, a contraction, something unsightly. She has nothing unsightly, because a bride with blemish or wrinkle—with something worthy of accusation—could never be fitting for Christ the Bridegroom. You know that the Church is a virgin bride. You may ask, “How can this be?” Quite simply. Let me remind you of a parable. What happens in that parable? It is what we were saying earlier. What...

is it? “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet,” says the Lord. A dragnet, as you know, is a net—a fishing net. This is also the source of the verb meaning “to ensnare,” which literally means “to catch like a fish.” Figuratively, we say, “That person captivated me”; that is, he caught me, he won me over. The Lord says that this dragnet, cast into the sea—and the sea is a symbol of the world—gathers both good fish and inferior fish. Here “bad” does not mean rotten; it means second-rate. This is indeed an ancient image. Even today, a fisherman sorts his catch.

Some fish are extremely bony, of kinds fishermen know are not even worth offering for sale, so they throw them away and leave them on the sand. You see the gulls circling around to eat them. But they put the good fish into crates and take them to market. Now listen to what the Lord says. The net caught both good and inferior fish. The catch was sorted on the sand, along the shore: the good fish were taken where they were meant to go, while the inferior ones were left there. So you see that the net gathers everything. At this very moment, as we were saying, the net is being spread and cast, and it catches people. Do you think that everyone in this net is choice—every one of them a fine red mullet?

Or perhaps a sea bream, a sole, or some other expensive fish? What are they all? There are also tiny fish, sardines, bony fish, and so forth. Let us not condemn, my beloved. And do not give me the argument, “But we are all baptized; infant Baptism has become the custom—what can we do now?” The Church casts out her net and fishes for people because she desires to transform those she catches into spiritual persons. You know, I have personal experience of what we are describing, and I shall tell you about it. On Sunday I give a talk—a very fine talk, let us say. On Monday, some people come and tell me, “Yesterday, in your Sunday talk, you said...”

“That point was about me.” Some tell me, “You caught me.” Others, who do not understand very well, say, “You were speaking about me,” believing that I had somehow learned something about them. Listen carefully. They think I learned of some fault of theirs and am now speaking about that particular failing. But it is simply the Word of God that catches people; that is how we might put it. This is a property of the Word of God. So they come and say, “I remembered that sin of mine.” Then they confess it and begin to change for the better. Thus we see that the Church truly catches people in her net. Did the Lord not say, “I will make you fishers of men”? Do you see? Everyone hears, but many are called and few are chosen. What you hear has the power to transform you into something different—into a...

good fish, that is, a precious one. Then there is true gain. This is what the Church has continually done throughout the centuries: she makes people better. Therefore, my beloved, we must not say, “Look at what this person is doing! Look at that priest! Look at that deacon!” Now, pay attention: at times we can correct certain things. But do you know what it means to be scandalized—to stumble? Listen carefully here. The word comes from skandalon, and a skandalon is a stake driven into the ground. That is what the word means: a stake. Yet you are looking at the stars.

Some people go through life without looking down as they walk; they keep looking upward. They look at the balconies, the rooftops, and everything around them. And as they walk with their eyes turned upward, they trip over the stake in front of them. And what happens? They fall. To be scandalized means that I tripped over the stake—the skandalon—and fell. How are we to understand this spiritually? It means that you saw something in your parish priest, in Father Athanasios, that you did not like, and you lacked the strength to rise above it and say, “My parish priest is one thing, and the Church is another.” I am saddened for the priest, and perhaps I may offer a correction.

We may discuss the matter with other brethren—not in order to accuse him—and then speak to him, help him, set him back on his feet, and seek our true shepherd. All this remains within the Church’s proper order. But it is another thing entirely to stumble and say, “I will never go to Church again.” Why? Because my parish priest did this or that. This is what it means to be scandalized. And I would tell you that, if you are faithful Christians who hear the Word of God and understand what the Church means, nothing should ever be capable of driving you away from the Church. Nothing—nothing at all. Absolutely nothing. Do you hear me? Then you will never say, “I am leaving the Church.” Where would you go, my friend?

Where would you go? The Church is something entirely different. Your parish priest does not constitute the Church. What, then, constitutes the Church? We have been explaining that all this time. Therefore, we must erase the verb “to be scandalized” from our vocabulary. Never say it. And if you wish, this applies not only to matters within the Church. Let us look at another situation in which a person may stumble. Perhaps we have not considered that this can happen elsewhere as well. Let me give you an example. You hear that a government minister steals and puts money into his own pockets. Will you then say, “If he steals, why shouldn’t I steal as well?” Or again...

he steals from the jar of honey, so I reach in too and take a taste with my finger. Do you know what this means? It means that I have been scandalized—I have stumbled. Why? Because you fell through the bad example of your superior, the minister, the prime minister, and so forth. You tripped over the bad example of your superior or of the ruler of your country. That is where you stumbled. And if you defend the evil committed by the ruler of your country, then you are the one who has been scandalized. Do you understand, my brother? Have you understood, please? You see that this does not concern the Church alone; it applies much more broadly. Would you like a third example?

People commit adultery. You may ask, “How do I know?” I know. First of all, it is common knowledge—common knowledge. Now, do not let the thought enter your mind that perhaps your husband or wife is committing adultery. As a rule, those who listen to the Word of God do not commit such sins. But suppose your friends tell you that they have mistresses—women in illicit relationships alongside their lawful wives—and you hear these things. Then you too may be tempted to fall into adultery. And if someone asks, “Why are you doing this?” the answer is, “Everyone does it.” So we also have social causes of stumbling.

It is not only a matter of money; it also affects our social and moral life. You see, my beloved, that the same principle applies. Or consider lawlessness. You see students who do not study, and others begin to follow them. They may stop studying their lessons, play truant, wander here and there, and accumulate many absences. Then another student says, “Why should I study? I will stop studying too and miss classes as well,” and so forth. Do you see? In all these situations, erase the verb “to be scandalized” from your vocabulary. Another person commits adultery—you never will. Your superior steals—you never will. Your classmate is a poor student—you never will be. Keep to your own path. This is what it means...

to be scandalized. So, my beloved, let us pay close attention to this point. But let us continue. Saint Cyril says, “She is free”—“she who is free and the mother of us all, who formerly was barren but now has many children.” We could speak about this for a long time, but I shall say only a few words. The Church, he says, is free. We shall see what “free” means. And she is the mother of us all, as the Apostle Paul says in his Epistle to the Galatians, chapter 4, verse 26. The Church, who was formerly barren, now has many children. The familiar saying is...

“The children of the desolate woman are more numerous than the children of her who has a husband.” When some interpret “the children of the desert,” they do so incorrectly, thinking it means the monks who dwell in the desert. No; it means the children of the desolate woman. I shall mention the actual image to which this refers: Sarah and Hagar with Abraham. But there are other examples as well, secondary images such as Leah and Rachel. Leah has many children, while Rachel is barren. In time, however, Rachel bears two children, one of whom is Joseph. We have yet another image: Peninnah and Hannah, the two wives of Elkanah.

The two women mentioned just before were Jacob’s wives; before them, as I said, were Sarah and Hagar, the women of Abraham. I will remain with the first example. You know that Sarah was barren, but Hagar was not. The Apostle Paul, in fact, interprets this allegorically and says that Sarah had no children. When Hagar gave birth to Ishmael—and later Isaac was born to Sarah—Ishmael was about sixteen years old. He was already grown and would strike Isaac. For this reason—and not only for this reason—God told Abraham to send Hagar away, as Sarah had desired.

Now Sarah was a free woman; that is, she was not a slave, whereas Hagar was a slave. Abraham did not commit adultery, because under Babylonian and Mesopotamian law he was permitted to have children by female slaves as well. In the same way, Jacob had children by the two slave women belonging to his two wives—four women in all. This was not unlawful; it was in accordance with Mesopotamian law. That is why I told you to be careful when we study Holy Scripture. Nor does God condemn this. There are reasons for it. So Hagar was a slave, and the law stated that if the slave woman’s child was placed upon the knees of the free woman, the free woman received that child as her own. Thus Sarah took Hagar’s child, Ishmael, and placed him upon her knees. This signified recognition.

From then on, therefore, he was their child. This was a form of legal recognition, as the Old Testament tells us there. Now pay attention. Sarah was free, while Hagar was a slave. The Apostle Paul interprets this and says that Hagar signifies Mount Sinai in Arabia. Sinai is called Hagar. The Law, therefore, is that which enslaves—or under which the children of the woman with many children, namely Hagar the slave, are enslaved. Sarah, by contrast, is the free woman who bears Isaac, and from her comes the Church. For we are truly the children of Abraham. Thus she who was once barren, though free, has now become the mother of many children. Her multitude of children is not found among the people of Israel, but in the Church—above all, in the Church. And so Scripture says, ‘The children of the barren woman are more numerous than the children of her who has a husband.’ The same would apply to Jacob, and the same would apply to Elkanah. So we can see whose children are now the many: they are the children of the Church. The Church is the free woman, the mother of us all, for we number in the millions throughout the world. And God said to Abraham, ‘Your children, your descendants, will be like the sand of the sea and like the stars of heaven.’ Yet the Jewish population was never like the sand of the sea or the stars of heaven.

Who, then, are those descendants? Thank you.

Λοιπόν, θα έπαυε να είναι η Εκκλησία μυστήριον εάν ορίζετο, διότι τότε θα καταλαμβάνετο. Αλλά επειδή δεν καταλαμβάνεται, δεν κατακτάται, δεν κατανοείται, άρα λοιπόν δεν δύναται να έχει ορισμό, διότι δεν ορίζεται, δεν μπαίνει όριον, και τα μυστήρια δεν ορίζονται. Και κάτι το οποίο δεν έχει ορισμό έχει εκφράσεις περιφραστικές, δηλαδή έχουμε περιφράσεις, που γίνεται μία προσέγγιση. Θα το δείτε αυτό ως εξής: ξέρετε ότι η Εκκλησία ταυτίζεται με τη Βασιλεία του Θεού. Ποιος μπορεί να ορίσει τη Βασιλεία του Θεού; Ποιος μπορεί να την ορίσει;

Όταν ο Κύριος είπε ότι τους αληθινούς προσκυνητές «ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν» και όταν λέει ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης «ἀγάπη ἐν ἀληθείᾳ», είναι αλήθεια. Σημαίνει ότι δεν μπορείς να μιλάς για αγάπη, αγάπη, και συνεπώς είσαι παθιασμένος άνθρωπος όταν δεν έχεις αγάπη, γιατί αυτή η αγάπη πρέπει να είναι ἐν ἀληθείᾳ. Αν σου ζητούσε ο γείτονας, αδελφέ μου, να έχει για μια βραδιά τη γυναίκα σου, από αγάπη θα του την έδινες; Θα τον λυπόσουν και θα έλεγες: «Τον καημένο, αφού μου το ζητάει, εγώ τον αγαπώ πολύ. Πάρε τη γυναίκα μου για μια βραδιά»;

Κάποια πολύ πολύ κοκαλιάρικα ψάρια, κάτι που τα ξέρουν αυτά οι ψαράδες, ούτε καν τα προσφέρουν στο εμπόριον, τα πετάνε. Τα αφήνουν εκεί στην αμμουδιά. Βλέπετε, τα γλαροπούλια γυρίζουν γι' αυτά τα ψάρια να τα φάνε. Ενώ τα καλά, τα βάζουν μέσα σε κασόνια και πάνε για την αγορά. Ακούστε λοιπόν τι λέει ο Κύριος. Το δίχτυ έπιασε καλά και δεύτερα ψάρια. Έξω στην αμμουδιά, στην παραλία, έγινε η διαλογή και τα μεν καλά πήγαν εκεί που θα πήγαιναν, τα δε σαπρά έμειναν εκεί. Συνεπώς, βλέπετε ότι το δίχτυ πιάνει. Αυτή τη στιγμή είμαστε εδώ, λέγαμε, απλώνει το δίχτυ, πετιέται το δίχτυ και πιάνει. Τι λέτε, μες στο δίχτυ αυτό είναι όλοι εκλεκτοί, είναι μπαρμπούνια;

Με άλλους αδελφούς να το κουβεντιάσουμε, δεν είναι κατηγορία αυτό, και να του το πούμε, να τον βοηθήσουμε, να τον ανορθώσουμε, να αναζητήσουμε τον αληθινό ποιμένα μας. Όλα είναι μέσα στη δικαιοδοσία της Εκκλησίας. Και άλλο πράγμα να σκανδαλιστώ με την έννοια «δεν ξαναπάω στην Εκκλησία». Γιατί; Γιατί ο παπάς της ενορίας μου έκανε αυτό ή εκείνο. Αυτό λέγεται σκανδαλισμός. Και θα σας έλεγα, αν είσαστε σωστοί χριστιανοί που ακούτε Λόγο Θεού και καταλαβαίνετε τι σημαίνει η Εκκλησία, τίποτα δεν πρέπει να σταθεί ικανό να σας απομακρύνει από την Εκκλησία. Τίποτα, τίποτα, τίποτε. Μα απολύτως τίποτε. Το ακούτε; Και έτσι δεν θα πείτε ποτέ «θα φύγω από την Εκκλησία». Πού θα πας, άνθρωπε;

κλέβει από το κιούπι με το μέλι και εγώ κάνω και μια έτσι και τρώω με το δάχτυλό μου. Αυτό ξέρετε τι θα πει; Σκανδαλίζομαι. Το σκεφθήκατε ποτέ; Γιατί; Διότι έπεσες στο κακό παράδειγμα του προϊσταμένου σου, του υπουργού, του πρωθυπουργού κλπ. και λοιπά. Έπεσες, σκόνταψες στο κακό παράδειγμα του προϊσταμένου σου ή του άρχοντος της πολιτείας. Εκεί σκόνταψες. Και αν υποστηρίζεις εκείνο που είναι κακό και το κάνει ο άρχοντας της πολιτείας σου, τότε είσαι ο σκανδαλισμένος. Το αντιλαμβάνεσαι, αδελφέ μου; Το καταλάβατε, παρακαλώ; Βλέπετε, δεν είναι μόνο στο θέμα της Εκκλησίας, είναι σε έναν ευρύτερο χώρο. Θέλετε ακόμη ένα τρίτο παράδειγμα;
