Summary

Saint Cyril’s Eighteenth Catechetical Lecture prepares the illuminandi for baptism at Pascha and introduces the Church within the framework of the Creed. Israel’s idolatry at Sinai demonstrates how quickly reverence can disappear when God’s word does not take root in the heart. The Psalms distinguish the assembly of persistent evildoers from the beauty of God’s house, calling Christians to love, adorn, and remain faithful within Christ’s Church.

My dear friends, we are at paragraph 24 of Saint Cyril’s Eighteenth Catechetical Lecture. Those of you who have the book, we are on page 241, at line 31. Line 31. And I believe I have told you this as well: in the margin, the lines are numbered in groups of five—5, 10, 15. In this, his final catechetical lecture before the Baptism of the illuminandi—that is, those preparing for illumination, for Baptism, and therefore called the illuminandi—Saint Cyril...

...gives them this instruction. In this final catechetical lecture, he has also spoken to them about the Church. After the resurrection of the dead comes the subject of the Church, then eternal life, then a few final exhortations in view of their Baptism, and afterward the catechetical lecture ends. He is in a hurry because they had to be baptized at Pascha. More precisely, the Baptism takes place on the evening of Great and Holy Saturday. And he tells them—we shall not examine this today—that the catechetical lectures will begin again on Bright Monday. These, of course, will not be the same lectures already delivered, but the so-called Mystagogical Catecheses, which concern the Mysteries of the Church and into which they were to be instructed and initiated after their Baptism. It is striking that these lectures began on the second day of Pascha. Indeed, he told them that they would receive instruction every day. But for now he is in a hurry, and that explains it. What a pity that he is rushing! Ah, if only he were not! Saint Cyril could have told us so very much more. But he is in haste and must conclude these subjects very quickly, since the whole course of instruction followed the backbone of the Creed, though he could, of course, have said much more. Yet it seems he reserved those things for later—not merely that it seems so; he said as much—the...

...he had said in the Eighteenth Catechetical Lecture, as we have already seen, that after Baptism they would return to these matters, or hear them in sermons delivered within the Church, such as sermons on the Gospel and so forth. He has addressed the phrase “One, Holy, Catholic Church.” As I told you, he omits “Apostolic,” and I explained why last time. We shall examine it ourselves, God willing, though certainly not today. First he analyzed—and this is a slight reversal of the natural order, but never mind—perhaps because of his haste, because of the speed with which he wished to finish. First he analyzes the term “catholic,” and then the term “Church,” because the Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. We might say that these other words are predicates: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. To what do they refer? To a subject, we would say, and that subject is none other than the Church. So he first took up the catholicity of the Church and now takes up the Church itself. It does not matter. Such slips often occur. In fact, it is not really a mistake; it is simply a matter of ordering in spoken discourse. And, if you like, such slips can sometimes be rather charming, because they reveal the freshness of the spoken word.

Having seen in one paragraph what “catholic” means, we examined four points, and I explained that these points are original. We now come to consider what the Church is. Paragraph 24, then: “It is fittingly called the Church because it calls everyone forth and gathers them together. As the Lord says in Leviticus: ‘Gather the whole assembly at the entrance of the Tabernacle of Witness.’” What, he asks, is the Church? It is called the Church because everyone is called forth. The word comes from the verb meaning “to call out.” In other words, it means gathering together, everyone assembling in the same place, just as the Evangelist Luke tells us in Acts that those who believed were together in one place—all gathered in the same place. What, then, is the Church? The Church is the assembly of the People of God. Of course, I am anticipating Saint Cyril by saying “the People of God,” because he will tell us this further on. But first he will consider how the term “Church” is used in the Old Testament and what it means there. For now, however, I want you to understand this: gathering together means that everyone assembles in the same place.

At this very moment, we are the Church, because we are all gathered here. Saint Cyril will, of course, refer to the Old Testament; he will not refer to pagan Greek literature. Allow me, however, to tell you—no, forgive me, he will refer to it, he will; but now he cites the Book of Acts. Forgive me. Still, let me point out that when the people were summoned by the rulers of a city, their gathering was called an ekklesia, an assembly. Thus we have the Assembly of the Athenians: those who gathered to make certain decisions or to hear announcements from the rulers of the people. It was therefore called the Assembly of the...

...Athenians. This is a very familiar word, frequently used by the ancient writers who lived before Christ. Saint Cyril’s first testimony here from the Old Testament is Leviticus 8:3. What does it say? “Gather the whole assembly,” God says to Moses. You shall gather the entire congregation. And what congregation does this mean? A congregation, from the verb “to gather together,” means the people: the whole congregation, all the people. “Gather them,” that is, assemble all the people at the entrance of the Tabernacle of Witness, outside the entrance of the Tabernacle, within which the testimonies were kept.

The testimonies of God were kept in the Tabernacle—the tablets within the Ark of the Covenant, and so forth. The people, then, were to gather there at the entrance of the Tabernacle of Witness. This is what the word means: “Gather them”—assemble them all.

“It should be noted that the word ‘Gather’ is found here for the first time in the Scriptures, when the Lord appointed Aaron to the high priesthood.” He says that the term is used for the first time when Aaron, the brother of Moses, was about to be appointed high priest of the people. Until then, he had simply been Moses’ brother—and indeed Moses’ elder brother. But when God wills to make Aaron high priest, He commands Moses to make vestments. These vestments were to be fashioned in a particular way and adorned with twelve jewels, twelve precious stones...

...according to the order of the twelve tribes of Israel, and so forth. They were splendid high-priestly vestments. Then there was the anointing with oil, the oil with which high priests and, later, kings would be anointed. There had to be a rite of vesting, anointing, and proclamation—or better, proclamation, anointing, and vesting. Let us put it in that order. This had to take place before all the people, and Aaron’s high priesthood had to be accepted by the entire people. You may ask: Was this done hastily, out of the blue? Forgive me, but I shall make a digression.

What I am about to tell you is not our subject, because our purpose is simply to use this phrase in order to understand the verb meaning “to assemble as a Church.” But since Saint Cyril refers here to Aaron’s consecration as high priest, allow me to say a little more. Did Aaron’s appointment happen just like that? Was it done in haste, first thing in the morning: “Come, let us summon all the people, because God has told me this and that,” as Moses might have said? No, my dear friends. No, no, no. Do you know what preparation preceded it? God had, of course, said that Aaron was to be high priest. But when this was announced to the people, some of them—who were they? From the tribe of Levi, of course. Forgive me...

...from other tribes—said, “But why? What is the reason? What special privilege does Aaron possess? Because he is Moses’ brother, why should we not also have the privilege of the high priesthood? Why not some of us, or some others among us?” So certain people rose up and said, “No, we do not accept this.” Pay attention: an objection. An objection concerning the high priesthood. An objection. God acknowledges the objection, since it has been raised. Yet it is God who wills this, because God is the One who appoints to the high priesthood. And this is because...

...the high priesthood concerns the things of God. After all, it does not concern affairs of the people or of the state, but the things of God. Therefore God has every right to choose. If you wish to appoint a king, a president of the republic, or whatever you please, that is your affair—how you will govern yourselves within your state. “But what concerns Me, I shall choose Myself,” God says, “because this is the man I desire.” When the objection and protest arose, it preceded all these events—it preceded the assembling of the people. Then God said to Moses, “Take something from each tribe, so that no tribe may have a grievance...

...and so that no objection may ever arise again. From each tribe, let one man take a dry branch and plant it. All twelve branches shall be planted. Whichever one sprouts—that is the tribe I desire to serve Me in the high priesthood.” My dear friends, in a single night Aaron’s rod—the rod that budded, as it is called—put forth leaves and nuts. In a single night! It was a dry branch, do you hear? Dry. They had not cut it fresh from a tree—and even if it had been fresh, this would still have been extraordinary.

The other eleven branches remained dry. Thus, through a miracle, God showed that He had chosen Aaron. But you see that He acknowledged the objection, and only after the matter had been settled among the people were they assembled for Aaron’s appointment, anointing, and vesting. I placed the vesting last because first comes the ordination and then Aaron is vested as high priest. Do you see? This tells us a great deal—a very great deal. Let us continue. “When the Lord appointed Aaron to the high priesthood”—that is, when the Lord was establishing Aaron in the high priesthood. “And in Deuteronomy God also says to Moses: ‘Gather the people before Me, and let them hear My words, so that they may learn to fear Me.’” He now takes this passage from Deuteronomy 4:10: “You shall gather the people before Me”—that is, bring the people into My presence, assemble them—and then they shall hear My words. “Let them hear My words.”

The purpose, of course—again, I should not really proceed to analyze these things for you, but never mind. I told you long ago, for we have been studying Saint Cyril for years, that I offer a somewhat fuller explanation because the catechumens of that time knew Holy Scripture. We do not know it. Those catechumens knew it, so Saint Cyril merely makes a reference. We, however, must also offer a little explanation. There are, then, two purposes for this assembling of the people. Two. They are to hear My words and to learn to fear Me: “to fear Me.” That is the purpose. Just as we are gathered here now, my dear friends—what do we hear? The Word of God. And what is the purpose of hearing the Word of God? That the fear of the Lord may be planted within us.

For if the word of the Lord is not planted within us, then what becomes of us? We become fearless, with no fear of God. We become people with no fear of God. And there is no greater calamity than for the People of God to become a people with no fear of God. Therefore the purpose of hearing the Word of God is that we may become God-fearing, that the fear of God may enter into us. On an earlier occasion I told you that, because of the many things I see and experience within me and around me, I have come to say, “Lord, I fear You.” I say this to myself, but I say it aloud.

I want my ears to hear it. I am alone in my cell, and I say, “Lord, I fear You.” Because of this or that thing I have seen, I see how You intervene; I see how this happens and how that happens. I have been struck with fear, Lord. Lord, I fear You. I fear You. And you know, someone who fears God does not rejoice over what happens to another person. He says, “That person suffered this—but am I not also a sinner? Why could the same thing not happen to me?” Did you hear what I said? The same thing could happen to any of us. Therefore let us say, “Lord, I fear You.” This is where we must arrive. When the fear of God enters into us, we receive a great benefit. “The name of the Church is mentioned again in connection with the tablets...”

“...in connection with the tablets, on which were written all the words that the Lord spoke to us on the mountain, from the midst of the fire, on the day of the assembly.” This is Deuteronomy 9:10. In other words, the name “Church” is mentioned again when the Law was written on the tablets, and so forth: “from the midst of the fire on the mountain,” and so forth, “on the day of the assembly.” What was this day of the assembly? It was when the people had gathered—indeed, we might say, on two occasions. Was it twice or once? When Moses was about to receive the Law, the people underwent purification for three days. Purification.

It was an outward purification; I shall not dwell on it. When Moses was about to descend on the fortieth day, the people below had already begun to worship idols. They thought Moses had disappeared on the mountain. That fear vanished so quickly. What a strange thing! The mountain was ablaze, the mountain trembled, and the voice of God thundered. It was terrifying! They themselves said, “We cannot bear to hear the voice of God.” And yet, before the forty days were over, those very people began to worship idols. They made the golden calf and began to dance around it and worship it. And God said, “Go down quickly.”

Then Moses gathered the people—he assembled them as a Church—went back up the mountain, remained there for another forty days, and came down again. This time the tablets were not written by God, not inscribed by the finger of God, because the first tablets had been shattered; Moses had broken them. A people worshipping idols was not worthy of a Law written by God. The same words, the Ten Commandments, were written by the hand of Moses, as Deuteronomy preserves them for us. And so the people were assembled: they were gathered together to hear the Law of God.

“As if he were saying more plainly: on the day when, having been called by God, you gathered together.” And the Psalmist says: “I will praise You, O Lord, in the great assembly; among a heavy-hearted people I will sing Your praises.” In other words, those called by God gathered together; that is, they assembled as the Church. And the Psalmist says, “I will praise You, O Lord.” Here, “I will confess” means “I will praise and glorify.” I will confess You—or rather, I will acknowledge You; forgive me—I will glorify You, O Lord, in the great assembly, that is, in a great gathering of the people. And among a heavy-hearted people, a people whose hearts are weighed down and who are not ready to hear and receive You, I will sing Your praises and glorify You. And now we come to paragraph twenty-five.

Earlier, then, the Psalmist said: “In the assemblies bless God, the Lord, from the fountains of Israel.” Earlier, that is, the Psalmist sang this hymn: “Bless”—that is, glorify—“God the Lord in the assembly,” all together, all together, “from the fountains of Israel.”

We use the words “from the fountains of Israel” as a verse, if I am not mistaken, during the Paschal season, in Bright Week. It is a beautiful phrase with great depth. It means that the fountain of Israel is Jacob. Israel is also the people who came forth from Jacob, because God named Jacob Israel, which means “beloved.” “From the fountains of Israel” also means that Israel has God as its fountain. But this concerns not only Israel—that is, Jacob—but Isaac and Abraham as well. How can we express this? We are to praise the Lord, whom the prophet elsewhere describes by saying that God is not recent, but ancient. In other words, He is not a new God or a human invention, but the God who truly exists. He is therefore the One worshipped from the very beginning of the existence of the People of God. He is the God of old: “from the fountains of Israel.” It is as though we were saying: the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. That phrase has the same meaning as “from the fountains of Israel.” “And after the Jews had been cast out from grace because of the plots they formed against the Savior...”

Now I want you to pay attention: “The Savior built a second Church from among the nations, our Holy Church of Christians, concerning which He said to Peter: ‘And upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.’” Because the Jews, he says, were cast out from grace, the Lord then builds a new Church—or, if you prefer, a second Church—because the first was cast out. It was cast out. The first Church, then, was the Church of Israel.

Israel is presented as a bride, and the Bridegroom of that bride is the Lord, Yahweh. Since the subject has come up, let me say this once again. Today a lady told me, “My sister’s husband is a Jehovah.” That is a bad expression. I do not know how it became common, and I fear that even some Church figures may have helped it become established. It is not correct. We must not say, “He is a Jehovah.” Indeed, the millennialists themselves correct this expression, and they are right to do so. We are the ones making the mistake. Pay attention to this: never call them “Jehovahs.” Call them millennialists,

because “Jehovah” means “the Lord.” Your sister’s husband cannot be Jehovah—he cannot be the Lord. We ourselves use the name Jehovah, or Yahweh as it is pronounced, and therefore it is not right to speak this way. We cannot give this name of God, the name “Lord,” to heretics merely because they speak about Jehovah. We must not do so.

The Jews were cast out by the Lord. Now God creates a new Church. In other words, the former Bridegroom casts out His first bride, about whom much was written in the Old Testament—very much indeed. I would even tell you that, on a first level of meaning, the Song of Songs was written, my dear friends, about the ancient Church, the Church of Israel, which is the bride, while the Lord is the Bridegroom. It is another matter that, because this bride was cast out,

a new bride is brought forth. Do not imagine that the Bridegroom simply abandons the first and takes a second. No. He brings the second bride forth from the first, because He casts out the people who do not believe. But what is this second Church? It is the Church about which the Lord told the Apostle Peter that He would build it upon the rock of his confession. What confession? That Jesus is the Son of God. The gates of Hades, the dark powers of Hades, will never be able to prevail against or overthrow His Church. You see, then, where the second Church is built: upon the truth that Jesus Christ is perfect God and perfect man. He is the foundation of the Church. Never forget this. But concerning the ancient and the new Church, listen to how the Lord Himself speaks. In Isaiah, as we know, God calls His Church a vine, which He brought out of Egypt and planted in the land of Canaan.

It says, “Your right hand planted the vine.” These are words the bishop also says, as you will know, but they come from Isaiah. And the prophet laments, saying, “O Lord, this vine which Your right hand planted—wild boars,” that is, male wild swine, “entered and ravaged it.” He means the surrounding nations, which harmed and destroyed the Lord’s vineyard. God permitted this, of course, because the people repeatedly flirted with idolatry. He permitted it.

The Church of Israel, then, is called a vine. This vine rejected her Bridegroom, or her Vinedresser. She rejected Him—that is, she rejected God, and specifically Jesus Christ. For Jesus Christ is Yahweh, the Lord. The form “Yahweh” is perhaps preferable to “Jehovah.” They are the same name, but “Yahweh” is perhaps the preferable written form. Jesus Christ is the Lord of the Old Testament. When He became man and came among His people, they rejected Him. Then He, in turn, rejected the old vine—or rather, the vine itself—

and created a new vineyard. The first is generally called the old and rejected vine—that is, the first Church of Israel. Where do we see this? On the evening of Great and Holy Thursday, at the Mystical Supper, Christ said, “I am the true vine.” Israel had formerly been the true vine, but it was cast out. Now another takes its place, because the former vine had grown old and produced grapes of Sodom and Gomorrah. Do you hear? God expresses His astonishment: “I planted you,” He says, “as a choice vine,” grown “from the choicest stock.”

“How did you turn into a vine of Sodom and Gomorrah?” And so the Lord now renews the Church and says, “I am the true vine.” We are the branches. A branch here means a shoot of the vine. But when He says this, to whom is He speaking? He is speaking to His disciples. His disciples were Jews. Therefore, as Jews, they belonged to the old vine. Now they are transplanted and become part of the new vine.

More precisely, they become the new branches, the new shoots that will bear clusters of grapes. The new vine, its trunk, is the Lord; He is the new vineyard. This is why He says, “I am the vine”—pay attention to His words—“the true vine,” because the others were rejected. Saint Cyril will tell us this immediately afterward: “Speaking prophetically and plainly about both of these, David said, concerning the first Church that was cast out”—concerning the one that was rejected, David says, and please note that both statements appear in the same psalm—“I have hated the assembly of evildoers.” This is in Psalm 25. “I have hated the assembly.” Which assembly? The gathering

of those who are evil. More precisely, it does not simply say “evil people,” but “those who persist in evildoing.” What is the difference? These people continually desire to do evil. They continually choose to remain in a state of wickedness. This is the assembly I have hated. In the Apocalypse, though I do not remember to which church the words are addressed, the Lord speaks about a synagogue that He hates. He is speaking of Jews who would turn against the Christians; He describes them as persistent evildoers and calls them “a synagogue of Satan.”

A synagogue is an assembly, a gathering of people. You see how the New Testament speaks of “a synagogue of Satan”? Satan also has his own church. Of course he does. And in modern terms, not only in America but no less in Europe and even in Greece, Satan has his church—the church of Satan. Perhaps you have often read about it in the newspapers. It is the church of Satan. Rituals and orgies take place there. Many times there are even murders, with living human beings sacrificed to the devil. May God have mercy. This is the church of Satan: people who persist in evildoing, people who think with the nous—the spiritual intellect—of Satan.

Naturally, they wage war against the Church of Christ. Or, in a broader sense, all who worship the Antichrist will constitute the church of the Antichrist, an assembly of persistent evildoers, the church of Satan.

“In the same psalm, concerning the second Church, which is being built”—“I will build My Church,” says the Lord—“in that same psalm,” Psalm 25, he says: “O Lord, I have loved the beauty of Your house.” This verse has two aspects, two levels of meaning; it has a double face, as it were. Here, the house is the temple. “O Lord,” he says, “I have loved the beauty of Your house.” In this sense, referring to the temple, we ask in the prayer behind the ambo that the Lord bless and sanctify

those who love the beauty of His house. What does “beauty” mean here? Its loveliness and adornment. O Lord, sanctify and bless those who care for the adornment of Your Church: that it may have a good floor, that icons may be painted in the temple. Iconography does not serve particular persons or individuals; it serves the Church. A beautiful chandelier may be installed, along with fine furnishings, icon stands, and so forth. All this is good. Speaking of this, I was impressed by an exhibition of mosaics discovered in Thessaly. Some came from basilicas—that is, Christian churches, including churches from the early Christian period—and others from what we might call secular art, from homes. Some date from before Christ and others from after Christ, though most are from after Christ. The exhibition is here at the Technical Chamber. I recommend that you go and see it. Admission is free. Go and see it. I went, and it is very beautiful. Anyone with a special sensitivity understands what one feels there. It is beautiful. Notice one photograph in particular: as you enter, it is on the right-hand side. It shows a basilica called the Basilica of the High Priest Peter, from Anchialos. As I told you, the exhibits come from the region of Thessaly, there around Thessalian Thebes.

Now, that inscription is in mosaic. I shall go again, because there is something I want to see once more. I did not write the inscription down, but I will. The whole inscription ends by saying that the entire mosaic was beautifully made, as befits the Temple of God. Yes, as befits the Temple of God. Somewhere in Ezra, or around there—I do not remember exactly—in the Old Testament, God complains and says: “When you returned from Babylon, you made your own houses beautiful, but you left My house neglected.” Do you hear? I remember many, many years ago, when a bishop and I were here together in Larissa. We would visit the villages and sometimes find the church unclean, with the oil lamps low and oil spilling everywhere, along with many other things. This was not so in every village, of course, but it was so in some. Then we would go to the home of a parish warden or priest and find it clean, beautiful, well cared for, and finely furnished. The bishop made the reasonable observation: “You keep your own homes clean and beautiful. Why do you not keep the Temple of God the same way?” I have spoken to you about this before. Would you want papers scattered across the floor of your home? Imagine opening your door to visitors and having papers lying all over the floor. Would you want that? Would you tolerate it?

If I came to your home this very moment, would I find it like that? No, certainly not, because you are good homemakers—I am speaking to the ladies. Then why, when you leave here, do you sit on papers, throw them down, and leave them inside the church? After you go, I see them and say, “Look at all these papers scattered on the floor.” What is your home, and what is the Temple of God? Is there no difference? Do you hear what I am saying? Have you ever seen guests eating sunflower seeds in your home and throwing the shells on the floor? Yet here we find sunflower-seed shells. Why, I ask you? Is the house of God someone else’s house? Is it not ours? Should we not care for the beauty and dignity of the temple? On another occasion I told you how you may see an oil lamp filled to the brim—filled, filled, filled with oil.

You want to add some of your own oil. Very well—give me the bottle, and let me add it when the lamp runs low. “No, I will add it myself right now.” And then you pour oil into the vigil lamp—glug, glug, glug, glug. The lamp fills up, overflows, and spills all over the floor. My dear lady, who is going to wash the church floor for you? You made the mess. If I dirtied the floor in your home, what would you do? And if you had parquet flooring, what would you do then? Of course, I know that those of you listening to me do not do such things, but tell those who do. Yes, because could anyone who hears the word of God ever behave this way? It is impossible. And when I mentioned the sunflower-seed shells—oh, those are in some other church. Yes, and the scraps of paper are in some other church too, not here.

My beloved. So, my beloved, he says: Sanctify those who love the beauty of Your house. The beauty of Your house is not only a matter of donating an icon stand, an icon, or a chandelier. It also means taking care that the church is clean and beautiful. Do not walk inside with mud on your shoes. Who will sweep it up? Why should there be mud there? Wipe your feet outside, and so on and so forth. What can I tell you? When someone has the Spirit of God and possesses a spirit of good stewardship and care, it is impossible for such things to escape his notice. So what does the Psalmist say here? “O Lord, I have loved the beauty of Your house.”

This refers to the second Church, that is, the Christian Church. And likewise, there are real flowers. You see, we have artificial flowers here as well. I do not know how pleasing that is—we put out artificial flowers. What are we to do? Are we saying to God, “Here, take artificial flowers”? But notice: we offer flowers, and rightly so. For among creation, among the plant kingdom, the flower is the choicest thing, and we offer it to God, the Creator of flowers and blossoms. How beautifully some of the troparia of Holy Week put it: “You who adorned the earth with flowers and blossoms.” What beautiful troparia they are! Yet the true flowers are the faithful; they are human beings.

Grace-filled children are flowers. Ladies and gentlemen, men and women who possess spiritual life are flowers; they are fragrant. They are the hidden little lilies I was telling you about last time. No, I did not tell you; I said it in a talk at the monastery. They are the hidden lilies, those little lilies concealed from sight and shepherded by the Lord. “He who shepherds among the lilies,” says the Song of Songs. You who are the shepherd—the shepherd of the lilies; listen to how beautiful that is! But we know that the Shepherd of the Church is the Shepherd of rational sheep, of human beings. Therefore, human beings are the lilies. They are the flowers; they are the lilies. And I was saying this in a talk I gave the other day, on the feast of Saint Nicholas.

On my father’s island in the Cyclades, when I was very young—I had just finished first grade—we once went to a beautiful, very long beach called Platys Gialos. There is also a church there that stands a little way out in the sea. You walk toward it along a narrow strip of dry land extending into the water. Beyond the beach, at least in one part of that area, there are great thornbushes. And I remember that among them were some tiny flowers, little lilies. I was only a child. I bent down and saw those little lilies hidden there among the thorns. That is faith. Amid the thorns of this world are God’s little lilies. They are the faithful Christians. These, then, are the lilies; these are the flowers, the true flowers.

They are true, living, and beautiful. This is how the Church is adorned. She is adorned not only with beautiful objects, but also with beautiful souls. This is how we too must be, so that we may say, as it says here, “O Lord, I have loved the beauty of Your house.” I have loved, he says, the beauty of Your house—the beauty of Your Church, of Your temple. Every believer can say this. A priest can also say it when he has formed his congregation, his parish, into an exemplary community: beautiful, holy, and fragrant, carrying the scent of incense and sweet fragrance within the church. Then he too could say, “O Lord, I have loved such a church, one that is beautiful and becoming.”

Immediately afterward, in the very same Psalm, it says: “In the churches”—notice the plural—“I will bless You, O Lord.” In the churches; it does not say “in the Church” here. Take note of that. I will bless You, O Lord; that is, I will glorify You. “For when the one assembly in Judea was rejected, the Churches of Christ multiplied throughout the whole inhabited world. Concerning them, sing also what is written in the Psalms: ‘Sing to the Lord a new song; His praise is in the Church of the saints.’ Then the prophet said to the Jews: ‘I have no pleasure in you,’ says the Lord Almighty; and immediately afterward: ‘For from the rising of the sun even to its setting…’”

“My name has been glorified among the nations.” Let me put this in my own words. He says that after the first Church was rejected, the second came. But the text says, “in the churches.” Yes, says Saint Cyril, because the Church has now spread throughout the whole earth. The Church is one—“in one Holy Church”—but she is spread throughout the whole earth, and therefore we speak of local Churches.

The Church is one because the Body of Christ is one. Pay attention! Among the Hebrews, this was not even a matter of having local places of worship, because the Hebrews were required to have a single altar. It was strictly and categorically forbidden, under penalty of death, for anyone to set up an altar apart from the one and only altar in the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem.

Remember the Lord’s conversation with the Samaritan woman. “Where must we worship the Lord?” she asks. And do not forget that the Northern Kingdom had broken away from the other kingdom, the first kingdom, Judah. For this reason, they did as they pleased and became virtually idolaters, and so on. There had to be one place. Why? Because this formed part of God’s plan. Israel had to be gathered around the one altar—the altar the Jews will build again, though this time the Antichrist will build it. These, then, were some of the reasons. Pentecost was also foreseen. The people had to be there so that they might hear and witness the miracle of Pentecost. This is important.

After Pentecost, however, the Church would be divided into many places—not divided in her essential character, but present in every place—and altars could be established everywhere, because God would now be glorified in every place. That is why he says “the Churches.” And do you know what is so important? It is this prophecy of Malachi. It is in the first chapter, verse eleven. The reference is not written here, but I have copied the passage from Malachi and will read it to you. God says that what they had offered Him had become an abomination: “And in every place incense is offered to My name, and a pure sacrifice.”

I abolish your sacrifice. You know that Israel’s ceremonial law was abolished; it came to an end. The prototype has come, so the antitype—the typological foreshadowing—is no longer needed. Those things were types. Now an altar may be established anywhere. And what does the Prophet Malachi say? “In every place,” everywhere, “incense is offered to My name.” A sacrifice is brought and offered in My name, says the Lord, “and a pure sacrifice, because My name is great among the nations.” Look: altars among the nations, no longer only in Israel.

“Says the Lord Almighty.” This now signifies the second Church, the Church that will be present in every part of the earth. Indeed, there is a beautiful prayer concerning the Holy Eucharist found in the Didache of the Twelve Apostles. It speaks of this breaking and scattering—not a division in the Church’s essential character, but her extension throughout the world. Listen to it. There the people give thanks and say: Just as, O Lord, this broken piece—forgive me, forgive me—this bread, which will be offered to God and through which we shall receive the Mystery of the Eucharist, was once scattered over the mountains—the mountains of Palestine, of course. Those mountains are low.

They are sown, just as certain semi-mountainous areas here in Thessaly are sown. They are raised areas, little hills, called mountains, though they are not truly high mountains. People sow crops there. This bread, this loaf, he says, was first scattered like wheat across the fields. Now it has been gathered together. In the same way, gather Your Church: just as the wheat was gathered and became this loaf, so may Your faithful be gathered from the ends of the earth and form Your Church. Thus the Church of Christ is now spread throughout the whole earth. She is this second Church. The first was rejected; it is finished. It is no longer needed. It is passing into oblivion.

The Antichrist, however, will attempt to reconstitute that assembly. For when, according to the Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the Thessalonians, he sits in the temple of God, he will demand that the people come to honor and worship him. What will the Antichrist do? He will gather a people—that is, an assembly, a church. But that assembly in the temple of God will be the assembly of those who persist in wickedness, the synagogue of the Antichrist, the assembly already rejected by God. Meanwhile, the Church of Christ will be at the ends of the inhabited world. What will preserve her unity and essential character will be the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist.

It is the expression of the one Church. Wherever it is celebrated, there in essence is the one Church. And according to the assurance of the Apostle Paul, the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist will be celebrated “until He comes,” until the day when the Lord comes. On the day when the Lord comes—that is, at His Second Coming—the last Divine Liturgy in history will have been celebrated: the Body and Blood of Christ, the Church. Thank you for listening.

Λοιπόν, η επιγραφή αυτή είναι μωσαϊκή. Θα ξαναπάω, θα ξαναπάω πάλι, γιατί θέλω να ξαναδώ πάλι κάτι. Και δεν την έγραψα, θα την γράψω όμως. Ολόκληρη αυτή η επιγραφή τελειώνει δια του εξής: ότι όλο αυτό το μωσαϊκό είναι ωραία φτιαγμένο, καθώς πρέπει στο Ναό του Θεού. Ναι, καθώς πρέπει στο Ναό του Θεού. Κάπου στον Έσδρα, κάπου εκεί, δεν θυμάμαι, στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, ο Θεός παραπονείται και λέγει: «Όταν ήρθατε από τη Βαβυλώνα, φτιάξατε ωραία τα σπίτια σας. Το δικό μου τον οίκο τον αφήσατε». Ακούτε; Θυμούμαι κάποτε, προ πολλών, πολλών ετών, ένας επίσκοπος, μαζί είμαστε εδώ στην Λάρισα, πηγαίναμε στα χωριά, βλέπαμε να είναι ακάθαρτος ο ναός, τα καντήλια χάμω, να τρέχουν τα λάδια και άλλα πολλά, πολλά, πολλά. Όχι βέβαια σε όλα τα χωριά, σε κάποια χωριά. Μετά πηγαίναμε σε κάποιο σπίτι του επιτρόπου, του ιερέως. Καθαρά, ωραία, περιποιημένα, με ωραία επίπλωση. Και έκανε την εύλογη παρατήρηση ο επίσκοπος: «Καλά, τα σπίτια σας τα έχετε καθαρά και ωραία. Το Ναό του Θεού γιατί δεν τον έχετε έτσι;» Κι άλλοτε εγώ σας είχα κάνει ένα σχόλιο πάνω σ' αυτό. Στο σπίτι σας θα θέλατε να υπάρχουν χαρτιά χάμω; Σκεφτείτε να ανοίξετε την πόρτα σας, να μπουν επισκέπτες και να υπάρχουν κάτω στο πάτωμα χαρτιά πεταμένα χάμω. Θα το θέλατε; Θα το ανεχόσαστε;
