Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s eighteenth catechesis moves from the resurrection of the dead and eternal life to the doctrine of the Church. The Church is called Catholic because she extends throughout the whole world and teaches the complete Christian faith continuously to every generation. The Catholic Church gathers every class of person into godliness, including rulers and subjects, educated and uneducated, rich and poor, men and women.

My dear friends, we are now in the eighteenth catechesis of Saint Cyril. So far, we have seen him speak about the resurrection of the dead. We have examined a good many points, although, as he himself says, he passed over this subject very quickly indeed—not because there was no time. But after concluding this great subject of the resurrection of the dead, expressed in the words, “I look for the resurrection of the dead,” I should tell you that, because he uses the Jerusalem Creed rather than the Nicene Creed—our familiar “I believe in one God,” and so forth—this is the eleventh article, and it reads, “And in the resurrection of the flesh.” In the Nicene Creed we say, “I look for the resurrection of the dead.” To “look for” means to await, and indeed to await with joy, because expectation concerns pleasant things, not unpleasant ones. So I await the resurrection because the fact that we shall rise again is joyful, for it answers this immensely great—perhaps uniquely great—existential question: Why do I exist? Why do I exist? Well, we shall rise again and live in the Kingdom of God.
And in the Nicene Creed we say, “I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come.” Here, in the Jerusalem Creed, the twelfth article is, “And in eternal life.” As you understand, there is no contradiction at all. Before the Nicene Creed was formulated and ultimately established in the Church, there were many other creeds. Now, why it is called a “symbol,” I will not analyze in greater detail, or we shall be delayed. The word comes from the verb meaning “to bring together,” because—well, I had better not say more, or I shall confuse you further. The point is that a creed was always a profession of faith.
You had to confess this profession of faith in order to be baptized; otherwise, you could not receive Baptism. That is why the Creed—the “I believe” that we recite at Baptism—is absolutely essential, indeed indispensable. We might say that one very ancient creed is preserved in Holy Scripture: the confession Philip the Deacon required of the eunuch. The eunuch says to him, “What prevents me, what hinders me from being baptized? Look, here is water.” Philip replies, “You may be baptized if you confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” And the man said, “I believe Jesus to be...”
“To be”—that is the infinitive, yes—“to be the Son of God.” In other words, “I believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” This is one statement, a single sentence of confession. But as the life of the Church advanced and heresies appeared, new statements of confession were added. Thus, for example, the confession of God as Trinity was added. The Trinitarian nature of God was attacked by the Monarchians, Sabellius, and others. And so we say, “I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Spirit.” This was added.
The Church was attacked; the very understanding of the Church was attacked; one teaching or another was attacked, including the resurrection of the dead—“I look for the resurrection of the dead”—and eventually the Creed was completed in twelve articles. Yet these creeds were numerous. We also have the so-called Athanasian Creed, which is attributed to Saint Athanasius the Great. If you open the Horologion published by the Apostoliki Diakonia, you will find the Athanasian Creed of Faith right at the beginning. Because the Church was scattered across different places, she sought in this way to preserve the Orthodox mind, so that when she baptized a candidate, that person would not already have been ensnared by the heretics.
Let me also tell you that the Creed does not exhaust every doctrine. Does the Creed, for example, mention the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist? Clearly not. Does it mention the Mysteries in general? Clearly not. The Creed, then, is a broad outline of the faith, a profession of faith drawn in broad strokes. Later, of course, we also find other confessions. We speak of the Confession of Mogila and the Confession of Dositheos of Jerusalem. There are others as well. These are confessions produced when, for example, the Protestants come and dispute the Mysteries. But we do not call those creeds.
We call “the Creed” the one that was ultimately established. So do not be surprised that the wording differs. Let me read you the Jerusalem Creed very quickly: “We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, begotten of the Father, true God before all ages, through whom all things were made; who came in the flesh and became man of the Virgin and the Holy Spirit; who was crucified and buried; who rose on the third day and ascended into heaven; who sits at the right hand of the Father and is coming in glory to judge the living and the dead; whose Kingdom shall have no end; and in one Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who spoke through...”
“...the Prophets; and in one Baptism of metanoia, of repentance, for the forgiveness of sins; and in one Holy Catholic Church”—the word “Apostolic” was added later and is not present here—“and in the resurrection of the flesh”—that is, “I look for the resurrection of the dead”—“and in eternal life.” In essence, it is the same; it is the same faith in different wording. I have said this so that no one will be troubled and ask why it differs or how this came about. Saint Cyril said these things in paragraph twenty-two. Now that he has completed the subject of the resurrection of the dead, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem will take up the subject of the Church. How did we say it? “And in one Holy Catholic Church,” the Creed declares.
For those of you who have the book, the Creed is found at the end of the fifth catechesis. We now read from paragraph twenty-two of the eighteenth catechesis: “The profession of faith that is recited goes on to include: ‘And in one Baptism of metanoia, of repentance, for the forgiveness of sins; and in one Holy Catholic Church; and in the resurrection of the flesh; and in eternal life.’ Baptism and repentance were discussed in the earlier catecheses, while what has now been said concerning the resurrection of the dead was said on account of the words, ‘And in the resurrection of the flesh.’”
“What remains, then, is for the present the clause, ‘And in one Holy Catholic Church.’ Much could be said about her, but we shall speak in a few words.” Notice how he begins: “The profession of faith that is recited.” This recited faith is the Creed. That is, recite it—say what pertains to the faith. And note that the words “I believe” are understood to be repeated in every article, although for reasons of wording they are not actually repeated; their repetition is implied. In other words: I believe in one God, who is Trinity; I believe in one Holy Catholic Church; I believe in eternal life. “I believe” is repeated in every article. This is understood.
What, then, is received? And concerning the words “I believe,” if you remember—though how could you, since many years have passed—Saint Cyril gives a marvelous exposition of faith. Just yesterday I shared a few points about faith with the children in the advanced catechetical school. It is a marvelous exposition. Faith, this foundation, we might say, of our salvation, gives fullness to the twelve articles of the Creed that is recited, and also to the entire body of the faith, its doctrines, and so forth. Thus, the profession of faith goes on to include “in one Baptism,” and so forth.
He says that we discussed these things in the first catecheses. We also spoke about the resurrection of the dead, “and in the resurrection of the flesh”; that too has been covered. Now we shall discuss what remains. And what remains? “And in one Holy Catholic Church.” There is, of course, also the phrase “and in eternal life.” We shall examine that as well in this same catechesis. Saint Cyril says that we shall speak briefly about all these things: “Concerning the Church, much could have been said, but we shall speak in a few words.” We too shall speak in a few words, although, of course, because...
...we have somewhat more freedom than Saint Cyril had at that time, we shall add a little more. We shall also explain why the Church is called “Apostolic,” and so forth. He does not mention here that she is the Body of Christ. We shall speak about that as well, for it is fundamental. But I would truly like you to understand that the teaching concerning the Church is boundless, and that the Church is co-eternal with the Holy Trinity. We shall speak of this too. Saint Cyril does not say it here. He explained, “I shall speak to you in a few words.” And so, with God’s help—may He illumine both me and you—let us continue examining our subject. Paragraph twenty-three.
“She is called Catholic because she is throughout the whole inhabited world, from one end of the earth to the other,” and so forth. What does the term “Catholic” mean? The Creed says “in one,” though Saint Cyril does not discuss the word “one”; he discusses only “Catholic.” Saint Cyril does not discuss “Apostolic” here. The Creed does contain “one.” As I told you, only “Apostolic” is absent. Saint Cyril gives four reasons why the Church is called Catholic. Before we see what he has to tell us, however, I shall offer a brief analysis that is purely grammatical. What does “Catholic” mean?
Some might say, as a joke about the Roman Catholics, that they are called “Catholics” because they sit during worship. What a dreadful pun! Yes, because they sit on chairs and display remarkable inactivity. That, supposedly, is why they are called the Catholic Church: because they sit. But in truth, the Church of Rome is not the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is the Orthodox Church. Therefore, if we wished to give the full title, we would say, “The Orthodox Eastern Catholic Church of Christ.” We are the Catholic Church. It is wrong to call it the Roman Catholic Church. It should be called the Papal Church, not the Catholic Church. The word “Catholic” is familiar to us also from certain epistles. In the New Testament we have the seven so-called Catholic Epistles. The word is formed from the preposition kata, meaning “according to,” and holos, meaning “whole.”
Or “all”—“whole,” “all.” So if I join kata and holos, forming kata holos, the final alpha drops before the initial omicron, since where two vowels meet one is removed, and we get kat’ holos. But this sounded unpleasant to the ears of our ancestors. You see, they took care that language should also sound beautiful to the ear. Today...
...do we care whether words sound beautiful, harmonious, splendid, and pleasing to the ear? Our vocabulary has become coarse; that is, our ears have been corrupted—truly corrupted. So they did not say kat’ holos. Because holos begins with a rough breathing, the tau before that rough-breathed omicron changes into theta, producing katholou, kathole, and katholikos. What, then, does “Catholic” mean? It means wholly whole. The preposition kata, as in the expression “utterly defeated,” intensifies the meaning. We might say it means “the whole squared”—the utterly, completely whole. Thus, the Catholic Church...
...means the Church that—Saint Cyril will now give us four points, which are somewhat distinctive, as you will see. If you opened a work of dogmatic theology, you would not find these particular points made by Saint Cyril. I consider them rather distinctive. First: “Because she is throughout the whole inhabited world, from one end of the earth to the other.” Why is she called Catholic? Because she is spread over the whole earth. She extends throughout the whole earth, with the constant impulse, we might say, to continue growing—a continual spreading. Second—and I am the one numbering this as the second point.
I call it the second point; Saint Cyril’s discourse simply flows from one thought to the next: “And because she teaches universally and without omission all the doctrines that ought to come to human knowledge, concerning things both visible and invisible, heavenly and earthly.” The second reason, he says, is that she teaches everything. She teaches universally. “Universally” means that everything will be taught. “Without omission” means that the offering of all this teaching will continue unceasingly within the Church. In other words, our generation, as we have said, hears the catechesis throughout the whole city of Larissa.
But your children, who are now infants, do not hear it; they do not know or understand. Therefore, when your children come of age, the teaching must be repeated for them, and then for the generations after them, and those after them. Thus, “because she teaches universally”—everything—and at the same time “without omission,” unceasingly. My dear friends, if we had paid attention to this “without omission,” and if we had also paid attention to “universally,” believe me, our country at least would have been exceedingly blessed. There would be no sinner, no unbeliever, no atheist, if you consider that perhaps ninety-nine percent of the unbelievers and atheists among us...
blasphemers, are that way because of ignorance. Someone who is here tonight told me that he went to a church in another city—not in Thessaly, but somewhere else—and something unfortunate happened there. When it was time for the Holy Eucharist, a little child, six or seven years old, received a portion of the Lamb. The same thing once happened to me.
Oh, how dreadful! I could sense what the little child was feeling; the child was resisting, and then spat out the Lamb. That is why we do not give a portion of the Lamb to very young children. If you ever see me refrain from giving it to a child of three or four, please do not misunderstand us. There is a danger, because a child may not cooperate with you. There must be cooperation for you to administer it, just as there must be cooperation between a doctor and his patient.
Thank you. So the child spat it out here and began squeezing the Lamb like this. And the priest there seemed merely upset about it, or something of the sort. I was left with the impression that there was indifference surrounding the whole matter. Why was there indifference? Because people do not know what the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is. There are not many mothers who say to their little children, “The priest will give you a little bread and a little wine.” And so it becomes embedded in the child’s very being—because, sadly, the child will receive no further catechesis about this later in life—that it is merely a little wine and a little bread. And very many people want to receive Holy Communion. “But it is Christmas,” someone says. Yet you have not gone to Holy Confession; you committed fornication yesterday. How can you receive Holy Communion? That “but” expresses nothing more than a custom.
He has learned that one receives Holy Communion at Christmas. “But you must not.” “But it is Pascha.” You must not. This happens because we do not know what the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is. In other words, my beloved, as you understand, there is ignorance—a terrible ignorance—of the content of our faith. And so catholicity is lacking: that is, learning everything, with catechesis continuing without interruption. This is why we see decline within our Church. When I was young, we used to learn a little English. I remember our teacher telling us that in Britain there was a bridge—in Scotland, that is, not England, since England is not the whole island; Scotland is the northern region.
He told us that in Scotland, over a river, there is an iron bridge. It is exposed to tremendous dampness, and a permanent work crew starts at one end and paints it. By the time they reach the other end, the bridge has already begun to rust again at the beginning and the paint has worn away. So the crew returns to the beginning and starts painting once more. This is what must happen with catechesis: continually, continually, continually, continually. Catechesis must never cease. Its subject matter is so vast. Here, if you permit me, I would like to offer a small criticism. It is not a very pleasant one, but I will offer it because I have often felt and thought about this. We monastics...
When we monastics leave our monastery and are invited to give a lecture or a talk, we always speak about what monasticism is, and also about noetic prayer or subjects such as theosis, and so forth. I notice these subjects when I read the newspapers: there was, it says, a lecture or talk by such-and-such an abbot in such-and-such a hall in Athens, on such-and-such a subject. The subjects are always the same—the same again and again and again. And one wonders: Is the whole content of the faith exhausted by these subjects? Are there no other subjects?
It is as though I promised to raise you to a great height, while below you there is nothing supporting you and nowhere for you to stand. We speak about theosis and noetic prayer when we do not even show basic courtesy to our neighbor or know how to speak kindly. Everything beneath is left unsupported. It is like delivering university lectures to people who have never even attended primary school. Is this right, when the whole breadth of Christianity—every part of it—is not being covered? That is one point. Here is another criticism on the same matter: those of you who read books, do not restrict yourselves.
You must avoid this tendency: reading only Saint John Climacus, only Saint Isaac the Syrian. Indeed, I hold these Fathers in the highest esteem; what can I say? They are immensely important. But they are not the only ones. Then we remain confined to such writings and ignore Holy Scripture, or we read the New Testament and disdain the Old Testament. Or we consider only this or that Father who writes about monastic subjects to be important, while disdaining John Chrysostom, Basil the Great, and especially John Chrysostom, and so forth. For this is what the phrase means—and I will read it again as it is written here—“because she teaches universally.”
For they all have very many things to tell us, and our whole life must be addressed. Someone might say, “Father, why do you sit there year after year speaking to the people and explaining, for example, the Wisdom of Sirach?” Yes—but do you reject Holy Scripture? If you reject Holy Scripture, then let us discuss it. I must begin by treating you as someone who is calling into question whether the Wisdom of Sirach is Holy Scripture. Yet the Wisdom of Sirach says many things about how you should treat your wife and your children. Yes! Are these not spiritual matters? Are they not? It also speaks about your rulers and how to respond whether they are one way or another, as you remember.
Consider this past summer, those of you who came up to the monastery. Someone arriving might have asked, “Are these really the subjects Father Athanasios discusses in a monastery?” Yes, these are things we must learn. Why should we regard them as inferior and look down on them? This, my beloved, is why we suffer as we do. So please remember: the entire content of Christianity is a subject for catechesis. This is what I know. Yesterday I was speaking to you about famine, and I spent the entire hour on hunger. I told you that we must not throw away the food and other things God gives us. Yes! Did Christ not say this? Those who reject it are utterly mistaken—those who supposedly rise to the heights of spirituality. “Are these the things we are going to concern ourselves with?” Yes, these are the things we will concern ourselves with. For...
who told you that our audience, our Church, the members of our Church, have reached such spiritual heights that we should always speak only about lofty matters? We will speak about lofty matters as well, but not always at the expense of other things regarded as lesser and lower. That is not right. I believe my meaning is clear and that you have understood me, because there is a misunderstanding here. You see, some people say, “Ah, let me tell you what Father Athanasios talks about.” Many years ago, someone said, “Those things are for married people.” Oh, so there are two classes of people, the married and the monastics, and we must address them separately? Have you ever seen me make such a distinction? First of all, I myself am unmarried, yet I speak to you. I have never looked down on married people. “Leave them aside...”
Someone once said somewhere, “Leave them aside; they are married”—as if that meant they were sinners and should not learn anything more. Is that understood? I believe that if anyone maintains such a view, it is a heresy. That is how I understand it, and I believe perhaps you agree with me. Let us continue, my beloved. “Because she teaches universally and without interruption.” This is the point to which we must pay attention if we are to improve the spiritual quality of the members of our Church. Indeed, he says, “all the doctrines that ought to come to the knowledge of mankind...”
“concerning things visible and invisible.” Concerning those things that cannot be seen and those that can. Tell me, what are the invisible things? They are those that cannot be seen. And what are the visible things? Daily life. This is what I have been telling you all this time: there are so many things we must teach our children and our people. Catechesis has a broad scope. It concerns not only the truths we must believe, but also the way we must live—“things heavenly and things earthly,” everything belonging to Heaven and everything belonging to earth. Christ once said, “If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?” You know, earthly things are those plainly visible to the eye, yet it has been shown that even earthly things require faith. I have given this example before, more than once, but I will give it again. You tell someone, “Do not smoke, because it causes lung cancer.” Does the smoker know this? Yes. We say it, and you also see it on posters in the streets: “Smoking is harmful.” They advertise cigarettes to you, and underneath, as you know, they write, “Smoking is harmful.” Yes, that is called democracy. So smoking is harmful. He sees the warning there; he sees it.
Has he listened to radio programs and lectures and read books on the subject? Yes. Do all the doctors say this? Yes. Then, my brother, why do you smoke? “But I cannot give it up easily.” You can, if you truly want to. So you see, it is not merely a matter of knowledge; it is a matter of faith. Do not tell me it is a matter of willpower. First it is a matter of faith, and then it becomes a matter of will. That is how it is. This is why the Lord said, “I told you earthly things”—things that are tangible. Do I not know what becomes of a drunkard, how he and his household end up, and what his family will suffer?
Or what becomes of the household of a gambler? To give another example, you tell him, “Do not gamble, because...” and so forth.
These things are not merely matters of will; they are also matters of faith. Do you know where faith enters into this? Do you know what the drunkard, the gambler, and the smoker believe? They too believe something—it is still faith: they believe that all these consequences happen to other people, not to them. That is the point concerning faith. They believe, “It will not happen to me.” “My child, do not drink wine. I see that you are drinking, and you will become a drunkard.” “That happens to other people. I will not become a drunkard.” This is why even earthly things require not only knowledge but also faith. Let us continue to the third point concerning the Church. We must not forget that Saint Cyril is explaining the Church. Thank you.
“Because she subjects every class of mankind to godliness, rulers and subjects, learned and unlearned.” Why is the Church called Catholic? Because, he says, she embraces—and has as part of her life the calling to embrace in godliness—both rulers and those under their authority. We might also say both the free and slaves, since slavery existed at that time, and both the learned and the uneducated. Here, “uneducated” does not carry the meaning the corresponding word has today. Today we use the word “private citizen” in the familiar sense known to us all. In the ancient language, however, the word means...
illiterate, without education. The Apostle Paul says somewhere, “Though I am untrained in speech”—that is, unlearned. John Chrysostom takes up this passage and says, “Paul, unlearned? What! Paul, uneducated?” So the word means one without education. The Church embraces both the educated and the uneducated. This is tremendously important. She embraces men and women, rich and poor, rulers and subjects, intellectuals and ordinary people—that is, those without education—everyone, both young and old. Here we must say...
that although practical considerations sometimes require us to differentiate and divide our audience—perhaps having only women, only men, only intellectuals, only workers, or only manual laborers, and so forth—we form such groups only so that we can present what we wish to teach more effectively. Twenty years ago, at the old Church of Saint Achillios, I spoke about this same subject.
I will say it once again. This separation is not right, even though it may appear useful and seem to offer a better way of delivering catechesis. No. Everyone should be present: men and women, educated and uneducated, poor and rich, rulers and subjects. Who might come now? The mayor may come, the prefect may come, the prime minister may come. Let him enter. Naturally, as a courtesy, we may sometimes say to him, “Please come and take a seat.” But if our talk is already under way, he can find a chair over there and sit at the back. That is no problem; he is welcome. We will honor our rulers, but sometimes...
For certain practical reasons, there may be times when we cannot give them special honor—what else can we do? So let us not create these classes of people, because that is extremely dangerous. I remember someone once saying to me—a friend of mine—“Well, you are not a scholar, so you can only give talks to working people.” I took offense, not because I was not a scholar, but because we were dividing people into classes. We speak of “a scholars’ study group” and “a workers’ study group.” I do not wish to offend anyone or anything that already exists, but I cannot avoid doing so. A scholars’ group. A workers’ group. Does this mean that a manual laborer cannot attend a scholars’ group?
In the name of God! The Church is what you see here before you now: everyone together. And, Glory to God, we have achieved this to a considerable degree. Not today, on Monday, because it is late now and so forth. But on Sunday, you saw how many young children were here. And those young children will gain a great deal. It is important, then, that everyone should listen. There is no difficulty in that. It is a matter of the speaker’s skill: he must present his material in a way that speaks to every class of people and is understandable to all. That is the way to proceed. So this is how we should conduct ourselves, and we must never make such distinctions. I once found myself in Athens at a Holy Scripture study group.
I will tell you what happened, because I will never forget it—never in my life. There was another kind of separation there: only the ten or fifteen people belonging to that group were permitted to attend, and no one else was allowed. I remember that some students from the Teachers’ Academy were present. One of them said to a friend and fellow student, “Come and listen to the word of God for a little while.” At some point, the group leader, who had not noticed him at first, asked, “And this gentleman, please?” The person who had brought him replied, “He is a fellow student of mine, and I brought him with me.” “I am very sorry. Did you obtain permission?” “No, I did not.” From whom was he supposed to obtain permission?
“I am very sorry, but he cannot remain.” So the young man stood up and left. He had not invited himself. Yet the person who brought him did not leave. Had I been in his place, I would have left as well, and I would never have set foot there again. Do you understand what I am saying? This is what Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, speaks about. When a rich man or a ruler enters—a man wearing gold rings, covered in gold—you say to him, “Come in, please; sit here.” But to the poor man you say, “You sit down there, at my footstool; sit on that little stool.” “No, my brethren,” Saint James says. “No, my brethren, things must not be this way.”
Such things must not happen. Then, at the blessing of water, how many people who are neglected, unknown, and insignificant in the eyes of the world will gain the Kingdom of God, while prominent people may gain nothing and may perhaps even end up in Hell. So you understand that when we speak of the Church, we must pay very close attention to this point, because this is how matters truly stand. This is what constitutes the Church. You see how many beautiful and original points—I consider them original—he gives us here about the meaning of the Church, points we do not find in works of dogmatic theology. And now I come to the fourth point. Ah, forgive me. Do you remember the parable of the Good Samaritan? When the Good Samaritan brought the wounded man to the inn...
Look closely at these details. First of all, no distinction is made as to whether the wounded man belonged to his own people or who he might have been. He was simply a wounded man, and the Samaritan brought him to an inn. An inn means a sheltered place, we might say, that receives anyone who comes. That is why it is called an inn, not a hotel—an inn. I do not know what hotels there are here in our city or how luxurious they may be, but if a destitute man, someone extremely poor and dressed in rags, went to a hotel and asked to stay there for the night, I would truly be curious to know whether...
they would let him into the hotel. Certainly not. How could he lie on those sheets and blankets and soil everything? The hotel employee would pretend and tell him, “Oh, the hotel is full.” The inns of old also received animals and had stables. Whatever condition you were in, they accepted you. That is why the word “inn” was used: it receives anyone, no matter what he is like. A fornicator, an adulterer, a thief, a swindler—only repent, with metanoia, and the Church receives you. That is why she is called an inn. And now we come to the fourth reason given here for why the Church is called Catholic.
Forgive me.
Because she heals universally: she heals and cures every kind of sin, whether committed through the soul or through the body.
I shall take up the image of the inn. You know that in the parable of the Good Samaritan, the inn is understood to be the Church and, moreover, a place of healing. Why? Because the Good Samaritan took out two denarii, after tending the wounded man’s injuries throughout the night—not only at the place where he had found him lying, but all night long at the inn as well. He washed his wounds, poured oil on them, and bandaged them. Who knows? Perhaps during the night the man developed a fever, and the Samaritan placed vinegar on his forehead. Do we not put vinegar on our children when they have a fever? We put vinegar on them, and so forth. What beautiful acts of medical...
care these are, as the mother and father tenderly caress their little child. How beautiful and full of grace all this is. The next day, the Good Samaritan had to leave, the parable says, and he gave the innkeeper two denarii. He told him, “Take care of him”—care for my sick man and tend him diligently. “And when I return”—at Christ’s Second Coming—“whatever more you spend, I will repay you.” Listen: “to spend more” means to pay beyond what was first given. According to various interpretations, the two denarii represent the New Testament and the Old Testament, or the Mysteries of salvation, or other such things. But what does this “whatever more you spend” mean?
The priest has a duty to celebrate the Divine Liturgy, a duty to preach, and so forth. But that “more,” that spending beyond what is required, is, my dear friends, the love of the pastor, who gives something beyond what he has been commanded to give. That is what it means. Do you know what the Apostle Paul writes—he who fulfilled this parable beyond measure and truly spent more? What does he write to the Thessalonians? “If it were possible, we would give you not only the Word of God but our very hearts.” And there he uses a participle, “homeiromenoi”—omicron, mu, epsilon, iota.
I am explaining what the words mean. Go and find the passage. I do not remember whether it is in the First or the Second Epistle to the Thessalonians. Now pay attention here, my dear friends. The Church is a place of healing, and she comes to heal every kind of wound, whether it concerns the soul or the body. Listen to what he says: “And she cures every kind of sin.” To begin with, some people say, “Can I truly be forgiven?” Yes. Do you not believe that you can be forgiven? “But I committed very grave sins.” Take care, because you may be showing unbelief in the power of Christ’s blood. She heals every kind...
of sin. Only repent; have metanoia. The sin called unforgivable is the sin for which there is no repentance. Therefore, we must possess metanoia. And what does he say next? “Those committed through soul and body,” and so forth. There are also illnesses of the soul and illnesses of the body. What illnesses of soul and body? Those brought about by sin. This does not mean, of course, that I will cure an ulcer or appendicitis, or that we will perform heart surgery. But then again, why not? You know, as Keller says so beautifully in his book God Stands Behind Us, people do not enter hospitals in order to be healed...
but in order to be patched up. True healing means also discovering the causes—why the patient has an ulcer. Complete healing means bringing him into communion with God as well. The spiritual father, for example, and the Church do not carry scalpels, pincers, knives, and I do not know what else. But he can say, “You told me you have an ulcer. Why do you have an ulcer? Are you troubled by anxiety? Are you a habitually anxious person? Do you lack faith in God’s providence?” A young student came to me this evening and said, “I am anxious. I do not know what my future will be.”
I said to him, “Have you ever heard that God has died?” “No,” he replied. “Do you believe that God can die?” “No.” “Then if you simply say, ‘God does not die; human beings die,’ why are you anxious? God is there for you today, and He will be there tomorrow and next year as well.
When you are eighteen, twenty, thirty, or a hundred years old, God will be the same God for you. Only see to one thing: each day, do whatever you can. Show diligence and be industrious.” Many times, my dear friends, in a difficult moment I say to myself, “God has not died. God has not died.” If I say, “God has not died,” it means what people express in that saying they sometimes put on the back or front of their cars: “God will provide.” The phrase may sound so ordinary, but it is profoundly true: “God will provide.” When you have nothing, God still has everything. So if I believe that God is great, that He sees me and hears me, and so forth, why should I be consumed by anxiety? And if I am not consumed by anxiety, I will not develop an ulcer or what is called a nervous stomach, or whatever else may follow. Can the Church heal such things? I believe she can.
She teaches patient endurance. Is patient endurance a small thing? When she counsels us to avoid despondency, does not the thirty-eighth chapter of the Wisdom of Sirach say that sorrow has brought illness and death upon many? Do not give yourself over to sorrow, my friend; God says so. “Rejoice; again I will say, rejoice.”
Are you downcast? Have joy. Is the Church not practicing medicine? But where could I begin? “Time would fail me,” as Paul says in the Epistle to the Hebrews, if one were to describe all the things the Church can prevent in the first place. In other words, she exercises pastoral care as preventive medicine, and she also exercises pastoral care that heals. And then, what is Holy Confession? Does Holy Confession not lift from you the burden of guilt? The whole field of psychiatry arose because of this guilt. If there were no sense of guilt, psychiatry would not exist. You know this.
Guilt is the core, the center around which the whole of psychiatry revolves. All the phenomena examined by psychiatry are those produced by the sense of guilt. This is well known; psychiatry itself says so. Therefore, if you free the person who comes to you from that burden and tell him, “God has forgiven all these things,” he is healed. A woman came today—weeping and weeping—and said, “I will not be forgiven.” “No,” I told her, “you will be forgiven. Only do not commit those sins again; do not commit them again.” That is all, and I emphasize it. “Look, through the prayer of absolution you have been forgiven. Did you hear that? You have been forgiven.” The faithful person must become conscious that he has been forgiven, and then his burden is lifted. Saint Cyril says here that all these things...
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says that the Church comes to accomplish all these things. But not only this: “Within her is also found every form of what is called virtue—in deeds, in words, and in every kind of spiritual gift.” The Church is not only an infirmary—an inn and an infirmary. She is something more. She is also a treasury of virtues and a treasury of spiritual gifts. She comes not only to heal you and raise you from the degradation of sin, but also to adorn you, to give you a dowry—the dowry of the gifts of the Holy Spirit—and to make you a son of God. Remember the parable.
It is the wedding garment at the marriage feast of the King’s Son. “Friend,” he says, “how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” The Church gives you a wedding garment. She not only forgives you, but gives you a wedding garment and grants you the privilege of adoption as a son. All these things are held in trust within the Church. You see, then, my dear friends, what a great reality the Church is. The Church is an exceedingly great reality. How greatly those outside the Church deprive themselves! The Church is not four walls. The building is called a church only by extension, because within the four walls of the temple is the Church—that is, the people. The people are the Church. Saint Cyril will tell us this a little further on: “It is fittingly called the Church, because it calls everyone forth and gathers them together.” But I will not take that up yet; we shall leave it for next time. So, as we bring our time to a close, I would say this to you: the Church is not four walls. The Church is the faithful people. It is you. Because all of us are gathered here within this building, the temple is also called a church by extension, if I may put it that way. Many people therefore think that the Church is only the temple building and not the faithful. Shall I tell you something else? Many think that simply being inside the temple means that they are in the Church.
I know many parish council members who have never gone to Holy Confession in their lives. I know many chanters who have never received Holy Communion in their lives; they are merely inside the temple, my children. There are parish council members and chanters who work in the temple, and the council members even serve without pay. Will they not be saved? No. No, no—they have cut themselves off. I say this because some people think that by making a few donations they place God under an obligation to save them, simply because they donated something. Or because they undertake some ministry at the candle stand or serve on fundraising committees, they think they are caring for the Church.
If you are not within the Church—that is, united to the Body of Christ through the Mysteries—do not deceive yourself, my brother. You will not be saved. In reality, you are outside. You are outside. You have already cut yourself off. We must pay close attention to this. As I have told you, there are people—and I have been speaking about this for many years, because I have seen it for many years—parish council members and chanters who do not receive Holy Communion. And if we priests were not serving the Divine Liturgy and therefore obliged to receive Holy Communion, we too would not receive. We too would not receive. This shows what a dreadful, dreadful understanding we have of the Church, and how great our ignorance is. My dear friends, this is why the word of God comes to
help, to catechize, and to open the eyes of the people. And as we saw in the opening words of Saint Cyril, the Church must present her teaching in all its catholic fullness, withholding nothing and offering it unceasingly, so that the people may be instructed, come to know the truth, glorify God, and be saved.

«Καθολικὴ μὲν οὖν καλεῖται διὰ τὸ καθ' ὅλης εἶναι τῆς οἰκουμένης, ἀπὸ περάτων γῆς ἕως περάτων». Και λοιπά και λοιπά. Ποια είναι ο όρος «Καθολική»; Λέγει «εἰς μίαν»· δεν αναφέρει το «μία». Αναφέρει μόνο το «Καθολική». «Αποστολική», εδώ ο Άγιος Κύριλλος... Το σύμβολο έχει «μία». Μόνο, σας είπα, λείπει το «Αποστολική». Και αναφέρει τέσσερις περιπτώσεις γιατί η Εκκλησία λέγεται Καθολική. Πριν δούμε όμως τι έχει να μας πει, θα σας κάνω εγώ μια μικρή ανάλυση, εντελώς γραμματική. Τι θα πει «Καθολικός»;
Εμείς οι μοναστικοί, όταν βρεθούμε έξω από το μοναστήρι μας και μας καλέσουν για μια διάλεξη, για μια ομιλία, αναφερόμαστε πάντοτε στο τι είναι ο μοναχισμός και ακόμη στη νοερά προσευχή ή σε θέματα θεώσεως κ.λπ. Αυτά τα θέματα παρατηρώ, διαβάζοντας στις εφημερίδες: έγινε, λέει, μια διάλεξη, μια ομιλία από τον τάδε ηγούμενο στην τάδε αίθουσα των Αθηνών με τέτοιο θέμα. Τα θέματα όλα είναι τα ίδια, τα ίδια και τα ίδια και τα ίδια και τα ίδια. Και λέει κανένας: εκεί εξαντλείται όλο το περιεχόμενο της πίστεως; Δεν υπάρχουν άλλα θέματα;
Έχει ακούσει εκπομπές ραδιοφωνικές, έχει ακούσει διαλέξεις, έχει διαβάσει βιβλία σχετικά; Ναι. Το λένε οι γιατροί αυτό όλοι; Ναι. Τότε, αδελφέ μου, γιατί καπνίζεις; «Μα δεν μπορώ εύκολα να το κόψω». Μπορείς άμα θέλεις. Τότε, ε, λοιπόν, το πιστεύετε ότι δεν είναι θέμα γνώσεως, είναι θέμα πίστεως. Μη μου πείτε θελήσεως, είναι θέμα πίστεως και κατόπιν είναι θέμα θελήσεως. Έτσι είναι. Γι' αυτό ο Κύριος είπε: «Σας είπα επίγεια πράγματα», πράγματα τα οποία είναι χειροπιαστά. Δεν ξέρω το κατάντημα ενός μπεκρή, πώς θα καταντήσει ο ίδιος και το σπίτι του, τι έχει να πάθει το σπίτι του;
για κάποιους τεχνικούς λόγους δεν θα τους τιμήσουμε, πώς θα το κάνουμε; Έτσι, μη δημιουργούμε αυτές τις τάξεις των ανθρώπων, γιατί είναι κάτι πάρα πολύ επικίνδυνο. Θυμάμαι κάποτε που μου είχε πει κάποιος: «Ε, τώρα», μου λέει, «εσύ δεν είσαι επιστήμων», ένας φίλος. «Εσύ τώρα», μου λέει, «μπορείς να κάνεις θέματα μόνο σε εργαζομένους». Μου κακοφάνηκε. Όχι γιατί δεν ήμουν επιστήμων, αλλά γιατί χωρίζουμε τους ανθρώπους σε τάξεις. Λέμε «κύκλος επιστημόνων». Δεν θέλω να προσβάλλω τίποτα από ό,τι υπάρχει, αλλά τι να το κάνω, προσβάλλω. Πώς να το κάνω; Κύκλος επιστημόνων. Κύκλος εργαζομένων. Δεν μπορεί δηλαδή ένας εργαζόμενος χειρωνάκτης, χειρωνάκτης, δεν μπορεί να πάει σε έναν κύκλο επιστημόνων;
Θα σας πω, δεν θα το ξεχάσω αυτό, μα ποτέ μου δεν θα το ξεχάσω. Εκεί υπήρχε και ένας άλλος διαφορισμός, ότι αυτοί οι 10-15 που ήσαν στον κύκλο, αυτοί μόνο έπρεπε να είναι και δεν έπρεπε να είναι κανείς άλλος. Θυμάμαι είχε και κάποιους φοιτητάς Ακαδημίας, δασκάλους δηλαδή, και κάποιος φοιτητής Ακαδημίας, λοιπόν, είπε σ' έναν φίλο του, συμμαθητή του: «Έλα να ακούσεις λίγο λόγο Θεού». Κάποια στιγμή ο κυκλάρχης λέει, δεν τον πρόσεξε από την αρχή. Κάποια στιγμή λέγει: «Ο κύριος, παρακαλώ;» Τότε εκείνος που τον έφερε λέει: «Είναι συμφοιτητής μου και τον έφερα». «Λυπάμαι πάρα πολύ. Πήρατε άδεια;» «Δεν πήρα άδεια». Από πού να πάρει την άδεια;
περιποιήσεις, που χαϊδεύουν το παιδάκι η μαμά, ο πατέρας, η μητέρα. Τι ωραία όλα αυτά, χαριτωμένα. Την άλλη μέρα έπρεπε, λέγει, να φύγει αυτός ο Καλός Σαμαρείτης και έδωσε δύο δηνάρια. Και λέει στον πανδοχέα: «Ἐπιμελήθητι», να φροντίζεις, να δείξεις επιμέλεια στον άρρωστό μου. «Και εγώ», λέγει, «ἐν τῷ ἐπανέρχεσθαί με», και εγώ όταν θα επανέλθω —η Δευτέρα του Χριστού Παρουσία— «ὅ,τι ἂν προσδαπανήσεις, εγώ θα σε πληρώσω». Ακούστε, προσδαπανώ θα πει πληρώνω παραπάνω. Λέγεται ερμηνευτικώς ότι τα δύο δηνάρια είναι η Καινή και η Παλαιά Διαθήκη, ότι είναι τα μυστήρια της σωτηρίας, ότι είναι ό,τι είναι. Αυτό το «προσδαπανήσεις» τι είναι;
