Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the resurrected body remains the same human body but becomes eternal, incorruptible, and no longer dependent on food or other biological necessities. At the Second Coming, the dead will rise and the living will be transformed instantaneously from mortality to immortality and from biological to spiritual existence. The righteous will shine with the uncreated divine light revealed in Christ’s Transfiguration, showing that Christianity culminates in glorified communion with the Holy Trinity and the Kingdom of God.

We are still, my beloved, in Saint Cyril’s book of Catechetical Lectures, in the eighteenth Catechesis, which deals with the great and important subject of the Resurrection of the Dead. We are at paragraph eighteen. Those of you who have the book, we are on page 240, line six. As you know, the margin is numbered every five lines—five, ten, fifteen, twenty—and that makes it very easy to find the passage we want. When we say line five, the next line is six, the one after that seven, and so on. Saint Cyril says to his catechumens: “This body, then, is raised, but it does not remain as it is; rather, it remains eternal.” This body is raised, therefore, but it does not remain as it is—that is, subject to dying again, to corruption and death. Instead, he says, it remains eternal. “It no longer needs food of this kind in order to live, nor ladders in order to ascend.” It no longer needs the food familiar to us in order to remain alive, nor does it need stairs in order to go up.
Remember, we said that we had stopped at the phrase “ladders in order to ascend,” and that this was what we would discuss, because we had already covered and examined what came before. I mentioned it again simply to connect the subject naturally. Before making that connection, however, and before continuing beyond the phrase “ladders in order to ascend,” let us recall that our body will, of course, have no need of food. A little further on, the Apostle Paul calls this body spiritual, and Saint Cyril naturally calls it spiritual as well. But when the Apostle Paul says “spiritual,” he does not mean immaterial. This is where people can fall into error. The risen body of Christ is likewise not immaterial. It is a spiritual body, but not an immaterial one.
What does “spiritual” mean? Please listen carefully and pay attention, so that you will remember it. It means that the body is no longer subject to biological laws but is directly subject to the Holy Spirit. That is what a spiritual body means. Today our body is subject to its biological needs. It must eat, drink, rest, and sleep. These are called biological needs. If these needs are not met, the body dies. Because it bears corruption within itself, it inevitably also undergoes death. We said last time that corruption is one thing and death another. It will do no harm to repeat this briefly. Corruption means, first, that you need these needs to be met. It also means this: when we say, “I am growing older; I am aging,” what does that mean? It means that corruption is at work. Even when we say, “My child has grown,” we are speaking of change. The commandment said, “Be fruitful and multiply,” yet growth itself is actually subject to the law of corruption. For there to be no corruption, a thing would have to remain unchanging. This, then, is corruption. Death comes after corruption and means the separation of soul and body. That is what we said last time. It does no harm to repeat certain things again and again. So then, what is the spiritual body?
A little further on—in fact, immediately afterward—Saint Cyril tells us that the body has no need of “ladders in order to ascend,” for “it becomes spiritual”; that is, it is no longer subject to biological needs. Our life now depends upon matter. In order to live, I must eat, and so forth. I am dependent—dependent on water, on bread, on food, and so on. My human life depends upon these biological elements. We call them biological because they are found in nature and sustain life. All these needs will be abolished and will exist no longer. When we speak of a spiritual body, we mean that my body becomes independent of the things upon which it now depends and comes directly under the governance of the Holy Spirit. Why does he say the Holy Spirit rather than Jesus Christ? If you ask, I will answer: because all three Persons of the Holy Trinity take part in our Resurrection. The Son created us and came into the world, and this is called the dispensation of the Son. At Pentecost we have the dispensation of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit abides in the Church. Did not the Lord say, “I am going away, and it is to your advantage that I go away, so that the Comforter may come”—that is, the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit, then, is the One who abides in the Church, sanctifies the faithful, and will bring about the Resurrection of the dead. And Holy Scripture quite rightly presents the Father as raising the dead in some places, the Son as raising them in others, and the Holy Spirit as raising them elsewhere. This is simply because God is one—the one God in the Holy Trinity—so that no one Person may appear inferior to another. The Holy Spirit, then, abides in the Church, and it is the Holy Spirit who helps us in the spiritual life—and by “spiritual life” I mean life in Christ. This is why it is called spiritual life: because the believer comes
to receive what the Holy Spirit gives him. And once he has received it, the Holy Spirit in turn brings about within him those qualities that will make him incorruptible and immortal. This is why the body is called a spiritual body: it is ordered, governed, directed, and sustained by the Holy Spirit. Now you can understand the following saying from the Gospel. When the devil said to the Lord in the wilderness, during those first temptations, “Command these stones to become loaves of bread,” the Lord replied, among other things, that
man shall not live by bread alone, but also by the Word of God. Pay close attention to this point. If I remember correctly, this passage is from Deuteronomy. God says through Moses, “Man shall not live by bread alone.” In other words, humanity now—notice this carefully—is living in the age in which it lives by bread. But when another age comes, namely the Kingdom of God made manifest, people will live without bread. How will they live? By the word of God. And what will this word of God be? A “word” means an utterance or command.
The first command, if you will, was this: “Eat from all that is set before you upon the earth. I have given you everything on earth for food,” said God. The second command will be: “You shall live without eating anything.” This is what it means for
man to live by the word of God. It means that God will command that man no longer eat anything. There is also a relative meaning here, as distinct from the absolute meaning I have just given you. The relative meaning is this: when you come here to hear the Word of God, you will, of course, afterward go home and eat. I will go and eat, and you will go and eat. What does this mean? It means that we must not be nourished by food alone, but also by the Word of God. That is the relative meaning. The absolute meaning is this: that day will come when we shall be nourished solely by the Word of God. And what is this Word of God? It is God’s command: “I will that you remain alive, that you neither die nor suffer corruption, without ever eating anything again.” That is the Word of God. This will be fulfilled after the Resurrection of the dead. Such a body is called a spiritual body. Why, then, does Saint Cyril say here that this body no longer needs “ladders in order to ascend”? It is a very striking expression. I have certainly not read all the Fathers of our Church, but in everything I have read on this subject, I have never encountered this little phrase, “ladders in order to ascend”—that is, stairs by which to go up.
It is remarkable. Take note: he did not write it by chance. When the Apostle Paul writes to the Thessalonians about the Resurrection of the dead, he says, “I do not want you, my brethren, to be ignorant concerning the Resurrection, concerning those who have fallen asleep.”
“They will rise, and you must not grieve as those grieve who have no hope of the Resurrection.” The pagans had no hope of the Resurrection—that is, in this case, those who were not Christians. “I do not want you to grieve, therefore, but I will tell you a Mystery.” And he begins to unfold it
and says that the Resurrection of the dead will take place “by the word of the Lord.” What does “by the word of the Lord” mean? It does not mean merely that the Lord will speak a command—although that too is true. That, however, is not how the expression is interpreted at this point. For what is that last trumpet? At the Resurrection of the dead, the Lord will speak, and the dead will rise. This is also why God said to the Prophet Ezekiel, in the passage we read at the beginning of this Catechesis: “Son of man, speak the word.” You see that the prophet here is, as it were, a type of Jesus Christ, who will raise us. “Speak the word.” Here in Thessalonians, however, “by the word of the Lord” means this: listen to what the Lord said.
This “word of the Lord” is not found in the four Gospels. The Apostle Paul preserves for us certain sayings of the Lord that are not preserved in the Gospels, since the Gospels plainly did not record everything Christ said. “By the word of the Lord,” therefore, means according to what the Lord Himself said. And what did He say? The Apostle now unfolds the Mystery: when the Lord comes, those who have died will rise, while those who are still alive will not die but will be changed. What is this change? Let us put it vividly, my beloved, and consider those whom the Second Coming of Christ will find still alive. We ourselves are alive now.
The Second Coming of Christ will, of course, find each person wherever he may be. Let us suppose that at that moment we are proclaiming the Word of God, as we are now. May the Second Coming of Christ find us so occupied—and may death itself find us in the same way. Those who are in the cemeteries, the dead, will rise. But what will happen to us? They will receive their renewed bodies, incorruptible and immortal. We, however, “in the twinkling of an eye, in an indivisible instant,” will be changed. We shall pass from corruption to incorruption and from mortality to immortality. This is what the Apostle Paul means when he says, “We shall be changed.” We shall pass from one state to another, from the biological state to the spiritual.
We shall pass from the natural state—“natural” here means biological; take note, for “soul” also means life—from being natural man into the spiritual state. We shall be changed; those of us still living will not die. But how quickly will these things happen? The Apostle uses two expressions to show that the change will be instantaneous. One is theoretical and the other practical. The theoretical expression is “in an indivisible instant.” The Greek word atomon, as you probably already know, means “indivisible.” It means something that cannot be cut any further—something that cannot be divided into pieces. You take an object and cut it in two,
then cut each part in two again, and again, and again. How long can this continue? Indefinitely? Eventually we reach what we call atoms, the atoms of matter. An atom cannot be divided. Of course, physics has now divided even the atom, so strictly speaking it is no longer an atom; we continue to call it that only by convention. The word means uncut or indivisible—that which is extremely small. It means the fundamental element that constitutes matter. This idea is then applied to time. We speak of a minute, a second, half a second. You divide it again and again. But how long can you go on dividing time? Indefinitely? Certainly not. It therefore means a span of time so brief that it cannot be divided any further.
That is what “in an indivisible instant” means. But Holy Scripture, as we know, always speaks through images—practical, familiar images drawn from everyday life—so that it may be understood. Besides, in those days people did not have the more developed concepts or knowledge that would enable them to express these things as we do now. So the Apostle Paul gives an image to illustrate the phrase “in an indivisible instant”: “in the twinkling of an eye,” because the time it takes to blink was considered exceedingly brief. That is what “in the twinkling of an eye” means. Yet we know that, in fact, this is an enormously long span of time by comparison. Correct me if I am mistaken, but I believe it is one-sixteenth of a second, because that interval of time
is the basis of cinema, if I am not mistaken. As I said, correct me if I am wrong on this point. When a change takes place in less than one-sixteenth of a second, the eye retains the image and cannot follow the change. The same thing happens with neon lamps. They light up fifty times and go dark fifty times each second. That is why, if you wave a pencil beneath such a light, you will see it in bands. This corresponds to the frequency of the electrical current: fifty cycles. What does this mean? The eye cannot follow these changes and consequently sees a continuous light. The same is true of a film: the eye cannot distinguish each separate image because the speed is greater and the interval of time is shorter.
The eye cannot follow anything faster, and so in the end it sees the phenomenon we call cinema—that is, continuous motion. Yet even this is a very long span of time. The Apostle Paul had no other image available to people of his age than the blinking of the eyes. The conclusion, then, is that this will happen in zero time. We would be more precise if we put it that way. And what will happen in zero time? The transformation of the universe, the Resurrection of the dead in their renewed bodies, and the transformation of the bodies of those who have not died. All of it will happen in zero time. It is astounding. God is mighty.
There is also an interpretation according to which the universe itself came into being in zero time—that is, out of nothing and in zero time. “Out of nothing” means that no matter existed beforehand; matter came into being in zero time. Time then began to unfold, allowing matter and the world to unfold as well. Thus we can now say that the universe has a certain age. But its beginning was out of nothing. Is that understandable? Out of nothing, yes—but also in zero time. In the same way, the Resurrection of the Dead and the new creation will occur in zero time. Pay careful attention to what this means. The Apostle Paul then continues: “Then we”—that is, we ourselves. For the moment, you see, he is not concerned with the ungodly. He is speaking to the devout about the devout. This is why the fate of the ungodly is absent from what he writes in his epistle to the Thessalonians. It is absent because, at that moment, it is not his subject; he does not take up the other side. “We who remain,” he says—we who are still alive. He includes himself, just as I included myself while speaking to you now, because the Second Coming could take place at this very moment. We who remain—together with whom? Together with those who will have risen, namely the devout. Then we
“We shall be caught up in the clouds, into the air, to meet the Lord.” What does this mean? We shall be caught up into the air, into the heights, upon the clouds, to welcome the Lord as He descends. Listen to this image. When Christ ascended into Heaven, we know that “a cloud received Him,” as Luke the Evangelist tells us both at the end of his Gospel and at the beginning of Acts, which was written by the same Evangelist. This cloud is a symbol of a divine vehicle, for God “rides upon the clouds.” But these clouds are certainly not clouds made of droplets of water. Likewise, the cloud that overshadowed the Lord—that is, which in a certain sense separated Him from the disciples on Mount Tabor—was a luminous cloud, symbolizing the presence of the Holy Spirit. You know that at the Transfiguration we have the presence of the one Triune God: the voice of the Father, the Son transfigured in His human nature, and the Holy Spirit as the cloud. The same happened at the Jordan River. Notice: it is the same. This cloud is a symbol of the Holy Spirit.
It was not that some rain cloud descended and cast its shadow over the Lord. No, that was not what happened. It was a divine uncreated energy. Here, then, we have a cloud that is not material, but is that vehicle which received the Lord at the Ascension. And He will come upon the clouds, as the Prophet Daniel tells us. We know that when a foreign dignitary comes to Athens, for example, he arrives at the airport. If, for some reason, the President of the Republic is unable to go there to receive him, he sends his presidential car.
I was saying, my dear ones: Oh, woe to us! The cloud, which symbolizes the divine presence—God sends His own vehicle to receive us. Can you imagine that? This is what it means: they will be received by a cloud and taken into the air, somewhere in the universe—where, God alone knows. The ungodly will remain here on earth; they will not be moved. What this earth will then be, and what will happen afterward, we do not know. We know only that they will go to Hell. Beyond that, we know nothing more. But here it is revealed to us “by the word of the Lord”: the Lord Himself said these things, though they are not written in the Gospel, and the Apostle Paul has preserved them for us. This means that it will be an ascension.
It will happen in the same manner as the Lord’s Ascension into Heaven. But I ask you: when the Lord ascended into Heaven, was not His Ascension contrary to the law of gravity? His human body had ceased to be a biological body, though before this the Lord ate and drank. The Lord now has the very same body, for the tomb was empty; the former body was not left inside. It was the same body. Yet now it is a spiritual body—another kind of body, the same and yet not the same. This body is now taken up into Heaven. Why? Because it is no longer subject either to biological laws or to natural laws, one of which is the law of gravity. Today, if we wish to go upward, we climb a ladder or board an airplane. In any case, we need some means of ascending. But then, as Saint Cyril says here, we shall have no need of ladders or steps in order to ascend. A cloud will receive us so that we may go to meet the Lord. Everything I have told you was simply to explain why we shall have no need of ladders—“nor of ladders for ascending.” I had already interpreted this passage for you, my dear ones. Now we move on: “It will be something wondrous, beyond anything of corresponding worth that we now possess.”
This body will be a wondrous body, and we possess nothing of comparable worth by which to measure it. My dear ones, we cannot conceive what this new body of ours will be. We cannot. Can you imagine, then, the glory that awaits us and the greatness of God’s love? We often ask whether people die before their time. At catechism school yesterday someone raised a question—I did not answer it then—and said, “But is God not unjust? Why do little children die?” No, my dear ones, He is not unjust, for the simple reason that we shall all be present at the universal Resurrection of all.
Is it not a sorrow and a tragedy to lose this present life? And what if God judged it better that we should not add further sins? This, of course, does not drive us toward suicide or despair. But I want to tell you, as I have told you before, that in the Kingdom of God, at the Resurrection of the dead, we shall all be present—murderers and those they murdered. Everyone will be present. There will no longer be any saying, “You wronged me; I wronged you,” “You took my field; I took yours,” or “You owe me money and never paid me,” and so forth. We shall all be present. Therefore, my dear ones, let us understand this: God wrongs no one, because there is the Resurrection of the dead. And now we continue.
Saint Cyril says:
“The righteous,” he says, “will shine like the sun and the moon and like the brightness of the firmament.” Then the righteous will shine like the sun, like the moon, and like the brightness of the firmament. The words “like the sun,” of course, were spoken by the Lord. They are found in the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 13, verse 43. The second phrase, concerning the moon and the brightness of the firmament, is from Daniel, if my memory does not deceive me. Saint Cyril brings them together and says that they will shine in just this way. For the moment, let us consider only the sun. The Lord Himself said this. And what does it mean?
He says, “They will shine forth like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father.” What does it mean that “they will shine forth like the sun”? He said only “like the sun,” because at the Transfiguration the Lord’s face was like the sun and His garments were like light. The word “like” means by way of comparison: like the light, like the sun. Since Holy Scripture has nothing brighter with which to compare it, it says “like the sun.” Yet the Lord’s face shone more brightly than the sun. Why? Because the glory Christ possessed at the Transfiguration—
the glory revealed through His human nature—was divine glory, the divine uncreated energy of the divine light. John the Evangelist says in one of his epistles, “God is light.” This “light” does not express the essence of God, but one of His divine uncreated energies. When he says, “God is love,” this does not express the essence of God either, but a divine uncreated energy. Nowhere does Holy Scripture express the essence of God. Nowhere. For Holy Scripture itself bears witness that the essence of God is incomprehensible, intangible, and unknown to everything created. God alone knows Himself. God alone—no one else, no created being: neither angels nor archangels, neither cherubim nor seraphim. What, then, do created beings know? All created beings receive only the divine uncreated energies of God. No one knows the essence of God. So, when Scripture says, “God is light,” what does this mean? When God made light, the first element of creation—not the sun, but light, for the sun is not light but a bearer of light; do you forget this? Do not forget it. This is why the sun appears on the fourth day of creation, while light was made on the first day. The sun...
appears on the fourth day because it is the bearer of light; the sun itself is not light. Light is simply energy, nothing more. God, then, made light as an image of the divine uncreated energy that is light, in accordance with the words, “God is light.” And He made a world which, in a certain sense, reflects what God is—not in His essence, but in the divine uncreated energy of the divine light. Therefore, when Christ was transfigured, what appeared was the uncreated light.
The uncreated light is the prototype, while sunlight, or cosmic light—the created energy that forms creation—is the antitype, the image. I hardly need to tell you how vast the distance is between the prototype and the antitype. Therefore, when the Gospel says that His face was like the sun, it means that the Evangelist had nothing else with which to compare it. But the divine uncreated energy revealed in the face of Christ was incomparably above created light, that first element which God made and which forms the world. Pay attention: matter itself is constituted from the energy of light. Do you forget this?
Matter comes from created light. Do you forget this? For energy and matter are equivalent: energy plus matter equals energy. Of course, I am not giving the complete formula; that is not necessary here. What does this mean? It means that when the righteous shine like the sun, they will receive the same divine uncreated energy that Christ possessed, which was revealed in His human face on Mount Tabor. What glory! Do you understand? What glory! My dear ones, if we knew the goal of Christianity, we would be astounded. This is the goal of Christianity.
Christianity did not come to make us wretched, but to make us glorious children of God. Christianity has a purpose; it is not without a goal. Some people say, “It is enough simply to live as a good person. All these other things you are telling me about—the Resurrection of the dead and the Kingdom of God—do not concern me.” But then Christianity is headless. Do you remember what I told you recently? If we say that Christianity does not culminate in the Kingdom of God, in the Resurrection of humanity, and in the glory of humanity, then what is its purpose? Does not the Apostle Paul say in chapter 15 of First Corinthians that we are the most pitiable of all people if this end does not exist? Therefore—
God does nothing without purpose, nothing that does not lead toward a goal or final end. The end—and “end” here means purpose—the purpose of Christianity is this: that we should become glorious children of God, possessing the divine glory and beholding the glory of Jesus Christ, in whom we shall have theoria, the divine vision of the Father and the Holy Spirit. When the Lord said to Philip, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father,” and, “He who sees Me sees the Father,” this was mysterious. For the disciple had said, “Show us the Father, and that is enough for us.” At that time this could not yet be brought to fulfillment. But then it will be fulfilled. How shall we behold the Father through the Spirit of God?
We do not know. Yet we know one thing, as John the Evangelist assures us in the third chapter, the third verse of his first catholic epistle: “It has not yet been revealed,” he says. What we shall become has not yet been revealed, but we know this:
when He is revealed, “we shall be like Him.” We shall be like Him. How? As He was transfigured on Mount Tabor. Ultimately, the Transfiguration was not merely to show the disciples who Christ is. Do you know the ultimate meaning of the Transfiguration? It is to show us what we shall become.
The events of Christ’s life are nothing other than the opening of the way—
the opening of the road toward what we ourselves shall become. Do you hear this? Therefore, if we endure a cross, the Resurrection follows, and the Ascension follows. Did not the Lord say through the Apostle Paul, “We shall be taken up into the air”? Glory follows. Everything through which the Lord passed, we too shall pass through. Thus we begin with the Cross, with ascesis, ascetic discipline, with tribulation and affliction. But beside them stands the Resurrection; beside it stands the Ascension; and beyond them stands divine glory. You see, then, how these things rise step by step and how important they all are. The righteous, he says, will shine like the sun, like the moon, and like the brightness of the firmament. And now, in order to demonstrate this—
Saint Cyril is practical, as you can see. And is it not necessary to be practical? Pastoral teaching is practical; the audience must understand. You saw that his examples at the beginning of the Catechetical Lecture were taken from nature. Now he will use another image. It is a very apt and beautiful image. I shall read it to you and then explain it in my own words: “God, foreknowing the unbelief of mankind, has granted to a tiny worm in summer rays of light that shine from its body, so that through what is visible, what is awaited may be believed.”
“For He who has provided the part can also provide the whole; and He who made a worm shine with light will much more make a righteous man radiant with light.” These are the fireflies we all know.
There are fireflies in Attica—not the flying kind, but those found in the orchards, especially in summer. When we watered the gardens and so forth, you could see fireflies among the grass: the familiar firefly that gives off light. My dear friends, one summer when I arrived at Mount Kissavos, for the first time in my life I saw these fireflies flying.
It was an astonishing sight. I believe you have seen it too. They light up and go dark, light up and go dark. It has to do with their breathing. Perhaps they take in oxygen and light up, and then go dark when they breathe out. It must be something like that. I do not know any more about it; you may correct me on this. As they fly through the forest, you see a spectacle: tiny lights turning on and off as they fly through the night. This is called cold light. I once read—though it was many years ago—that man had not succeeded in producing what is called cold light. I do not know whether he has achieved it now. Perhaps you follow modern science; I do not know. But the firefly produces this cold light.
They do not kindle a fire; this light gives off no heat. For everything that is luminous is also warm. Heat is one of the properties of light. Light is known to have many properties, but one of its basic properties is heat. So how can we have light that gives off no heat? How can that be? Saint Cyril says that God placed such light in a tiny worm. They truly are worms. At some point one emerges and grows wings—unless the one in Attica that does not fly is different from the one that flies here. I do not know; I have not investigated it further. The point, he says, is that God placed this sign before those who do not believe that human bodies will acquire this light. What light? The uncreated light!
He made these worms shine with created light, and cold light at that, to show you that if God creates the part—that is, if He makes worms shine—then how much more can He illumine the whole, namely, the bodies of the Saints. How will this glory appear in our bodies? We have seen it, as I told you, in the Transfiguration of Christ. We have seen it—not you or I personally, but humanity has seen it. We have also seen it in many Saints, who at certain moments shine with light. At certain moments, they shine.
This, my dear friends, is a testimony. All the Saints possess the uncreated light; if you do not possess the uncreated light, you are not a Saint. But it is not visible in all of them. God grants that some Saints may shine visibly. In the same way, objects belonging to Saints, including icons, also partake of the uncreated light. Let me tell you something, without referring to one particular case. Many times people have seen a light shining at some place on a mountain. They would see this light often, but it was not fire. It was a white light, not red. What I am telling you is significant, though I will not analyze it further. The light would show them that an icon lay at that spot; they would dig there and find it.
How could this be? The person who painted—who depicted, who wrote—the icon was sanctified and communicated the divine uncreated energy, so to speak, even to the object upon which he was depicting the sacred image. This is also how we have wonderworking icons. Would you like another example—one close to us both in time and place?
When Saint Gideon was martyred in Tyrnavos, they buried him. You know that one of his tortures...
No, no, forgive me—Saint George, Saint George of Rapsani. One of his tortures was that they placed him in that heated bathhouse, which still stands today. It is opposite the... artillery grounds, if they are still there; I do not know. It is that Turkish building. Now, Saint Gideon—the same thing happened to Saint George as well. When they buried them, each in his own time, they dug somewhere near the Xerias stream, a tributary of the Peneios, and buried them there. That night many people saw a pillar of light reaching up to heaven. “Reaching up to heaven” means that it extended all the way to the sky. That is what a heaven-high light means. The people were frightened, terribly frightened, and to prevent any further disturbance, Ali Pasha gave orders...
Thank you. Who was it? Was it not his son, Veli Pasha, who was in Tyrnavos? Veli Pasha—forgive me. How can I remember everything? Fortunately, I have you here to fill in what I forget. So, take note: he ordered that the Saint be exhumed and removed from that place. It is astonishing. Saint George, in particular, had greatly frightened all who saw the light. He was then taken to Rapsani and buried there. The sign was not given again, because it is not always given. Pay attention to this: a miracle is a testimony, but if a miracle continues without end, it leaves no room for faith. So one can see very clearly what this uncreated light is.
The divine uncreated energy that completely envelops the Saints and remains with them is the presence of the Holy Spirit, who is Himself God, the third person of the Holy Trinity. He gives this light. Thus, he says, the righteous will receive such a light. “Therefore we are raised”—we now come to the nineteenth paragraph—“Therefore we are raised, all possessing eternal bodies, though not all bodies alike.” We shall rise, then, and the bodies we possess will be eternal.
They will not all be alike. Eternal, but not alike. Saint Cyril will go on to speak about the righteous and the ungodly. Before we enter into that passage, allow me to point out a distinction that Saint Cyril does not mention here. Even among the Saints there will be differing degrees of glory. The Apostle says this clearly. All will indeed possess divine glory, and all will have theoria, the divine vision of our glorified Lord Jesus Christ; but they will not all possess the same glory, the same degree of theoria, or the same knowledge—a knowledge that will continue throughout eternity.
In the Kingdom of God, throughout eternity and unto the ages of ages, this knowledge will continually become more fully revealed. Why? How does the Apostle Paul put it? “One star differs from another star in glory.” If I am saved and you are saved, shall we possess the same glory as Paul? Have we labored as Paul did? Of course not. I pray that we may all be saved, but we cannot possess the glory of a Paul. Thus, everyone will share in glory, but its measure will differ according to each Saint’s holiness and offering.
Saint Cyril does not write this here. I have told it to you because it is known from our dogmatic teaching, as you yourselves know. But what does Saint Cyril say now? “All of us,” he says, “will have eternal bodies, but the bodies will not be alike.” Why? “The righteous man receives a heavenly body, so that he may worthily dwell with the angels; but the sinner receives an eternal body capable of enduring the punishment of sins, so that, though burning eternally in fire, he may never be consumed.” In other words, he says, both the righteous man and the sinner will possess an eternal body. But the righteous man will have a radiant and glorious body...
This is what we were saying earlier about divine glory: he will dwell with the Holy Angels and abide in the Kingdom of God in glory. The ungodly will also possess an eternal body, but it will be dark. It will be eternal because, he says, it will be capable of enduring the punishment of sins. “Capable of enduring” does not mean that they will possess patient endurance; it means that they will undergo the eternal fire without being destroyed, used up, or consumed. Let me read it again: “So that the ungodly man, though burning eternally in fire, may never be consumed.” This is the eternal fire of which the Lord spoke. In what sense is it eternal fire?
It does not consume or destroy. And so a person remains within that fire, which is dreadful. What else can one say, except that it is dreadful? I have spoken to you about this several times in the past. But since it is relevant to our subject here, allow me, in the few minutes remaining, to say this as well. This eternal fire is uncreated—uncreated—just as the eternal light is uncreated. The eternal light and the eternal fire proceed from the divine essence. The essence of God is, of course, uncreated, and the divine uncreated energies that proceed from the divine...
essence are likewise uncreated. Thus, as Basil the Great says—and other Fathers say the same, for this is a Patristic interpretation; Basil the Great says it in his Hexaemeron, in a passage whose particular homily I do not recall—just as sunlight departs from the sun, that is, as light travels in the form of the sun’s rays, as you know—listen carefully: light travels and does not return; created light does not return—as it travels, it carries with it what we call luminosity and what we call heat, or burning power. If you take a magnifying glass, you will see this very clearly. Focus...
a ray of sunlight, or a beam of the sun’s rays, and it will immediately burn your hand. We see, then, that light—a ray of light—is the bearer both of luminosity and of heat, which burns. The uncreated light proceeds from the divine essence. It passes through the righteous as light, without burning them, and reaches the condemned in Hell as fire without luminosity. That is how it is. In this way the Lord’s words are reconciled: He spoke both of “eternal fire” and of “outer darkness.” “Outer”...
means utter and far-removed darkness—darkness, darkness, darkness raised to the highest degree. This is the outer darkness. How can there be darkness when there is fire? Quite simply, the burning power of the uncreated light reaches Hell without its luminosity. As you see, my dear friends, these things are realities. Would you like me to tell you of such a reality? Listen. I told you earlier that the Saints receive the divine light, the uncreated light. But when... I also spoke to you of Saint George and Saint Gideon. Now pay attention. People possessed by demons are taken to Saint Spyridon...
to Saint Dionysios, and to Saint Gerasimos, and there the Saint casts out the demons. Do you know what the demons cry out through the mouth of the possessed person? They say that they are burning. This is the meaning of that popular expression: “Saint Nektarios,” they say, “is a burner. Does he not burn them? Saint Spyridon is a burner; Saint Dionysios and Saint Gerasimos are burners.” What does it mean? When the demons say—and people hear this in our own times—“You are burning me! You are burning me! You are burning me!” what is happening? It is the presence of the divine uncreated energy of the light, without its luminosity and with only its burning power.
These things, my dear friends, are realities encountered in everyday life, in the lives of saints and sinners. There are many accounts of someone receiving Holy Communion unworthily and presumptuously, then falling to the ground and crying, “I am burning! I am burning! I am burning!” Of course, God does not permit this to happen to everyone, because if He did, we would all have been burned. You have heard such accounts. This burning shows that all bodies will be eternal, but their condition and order will not be the same. And just as the Kingdom of God will be eternal, so too will Hell be eternal. God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Τι θα πει πνευματικόν; Ακούστε, παρακαλώ, και προσέξατε, ώστε να το θυμόσαστε. Θα πει μη υποκείμενον εις τους βιολογικούς νόμους, αλλά υποκείμενον άμεσα εις το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Αυτό θα πει πνευματικόν σώμα. Δηλαδή, σήμερα το σώμα μας υπόκειται εις τις βιολογικές του ανάγκες. Πρέπει να φάει, πρέπει να πιει, να ξεκουραστεί, να κοιμηθεί. Αυτές λέγονται βιολογικές ανάγκες. Αν υποτεθεί ότι δεν καλύπτονται οι βιολογικές του ανάγκες, το σώμα αυτό πεθαίνει. Δηλαδή, επειδή φέρει την φθοράν, αναμφισβήτητα δέχεται και τον θάνατο. Είπαμε την περασμένη φορά: άλλο πράγμα η φθορά, άλλο πράγμα ο θάνατος. Δεν πειράζει να κάνω μια σύντομη επανάληψη. Φθορά είναι το να έχεις ανάγκη καλύψεως των αναγκών αυτών, αφενός· αφετέρου δε, όταν λέμε «γηράσκω, μεγαλώνω, γερνάω», τι θα πει αυτό; Υπάρχει μία φθορά. Όταν λέμε «το παιδί μου μεγάλωσε», «αὐξάνεσθε», είπε η εντολή, «καὶ πληθύνεσθε», αφού το «αὐξάνεσθε» στην πραγματικότητα υπόκειται εις τον νόμο της φθοράς. Διότι, για να μην έχω φθορά, πρέπει να έχω το αμετάβλητο του πράγματος. Άρα, αυτό είναι φθορά. Ο θάνατος είναι το μετά από τη φθορά μου, που θα πει χωρισμός ψυχής και σώματος. Αυτό λέγαμε την περασμένη φορά. Δεν πειράζει να επαναλαμβάνω μερικά πράγματα ξανά και ξανά. Λοιπόν, τι είναι το πνευματικό σώμα;
Μας λέει λίγο πιο κάτω, ευθύς πιο κάτω, ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, που λέει: «Κλιμάκων πρὸς ἀνάβασιν» δεν έχει ανάγκη, «γίνεται γὰρ πνευματικόν», δηλαδή μη υποκείμενον εις τις βιολογικές του ανάγκες. Η ζωή μας εξαρτάται από την ύλη. Για να ζήσω, πρέπει να φάω κτλ. Εξαρτώμαι. Εξαρτώμαι από το νερό, εξαρτώμαι από το ψωμί, τις τροφές κτλ. Η ανθρωπίνη ζωή μου είναι εξαρτημένη από τα βιολογικά στοιχεία αυτά. Τα λέμε βιολογικά γιατί τα συναντάμε στη φύση και συντηρούν τη ζωή. Αυτά θα καταργηθούν και δεν θα υπάρχουν πια. Και όταν λέμε πνευματικό σώμα, θα πει το σώμα μου ανεξαρτητοποιείται από εκείνα από τα οποία εξαρτάται και τώρα υπόκειται άμεσα εις τις επιταγές του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Γιατί λέγει του Αγίου Πνεύματος και δεν λέει του Ιησού Χριστού; Αν ερωτήσετε, σας απαντώ. Διότι και τα τρία πρόσωπα της Αγίας Τριάδος συντελούν στην Ανάστασή μας. Αλλά ο Υιός μάς εδημιούργησε και ήλθε εις τον κόσμο και είναι η οικονομία του Υιού, έτσι λέει, η οικονομία του Υιού. Με την Πεντηκοστή έχουμε την οικονομία του Αγίου Πνεύματος, το οποίον Πνεύμα Άγιον μένει στην Εκκλησία. Δεν είπε ο Κύριος ότι «εγώ θα απέλθω και συμφέρει να απέλθω, για να έλθει ο Παράκλητος», το Πνεύμα το Άγιον;
«Οἱ δίκαιοι», φησίν, «λάμψουσιν ὡς ὁ ἥλιος καὶ ἡ σελήνη καὶ ὡς ἡ λαμπρότης τοῦ στερεώματος». Τότε οι δίκαιοι, λέει, θα λάμψουν όπως ο ήλιος, όπως η σελήνη, όπως η λαμπρότητα του στερεώματος. Και βέβαια «ὡς ὁ ἥλιος», είναι γνωστό, το είπε ο Κύριος. Είναι στο κατά Ματθαίον Ευαγγέλιον, στο 13ο κεφάλαιο, 43ος στίχος. Το δεύτερο, η σελήνη και η λαμπρότης του στερεώματος, αν δεν με απατάει η μνήμη, είναι εις τον Δανιήλ. Τα συνενώνει ο Άγιος Κύριλος, ότι θα λάμψουν όπως ακριβώς — ας πάρουμε μόνο τον ήλιο για μια στιγμή. Αυτό το είπε ο Κύριος. Και τι σημαίνει;
ο Θεός δεν κάνει άσκοπα πράγματα, δηλαδή πράγματα που δεν οδηγούν σε κάποιο σκοπό, σε κάποιο τέλος. Το τέλος — τέλος θα πει σκοπός — ο σκοπός του Χριστιανισμού είναι αυτός: να γίνουμε ένδοξα παιδιά του Θεού, έχοντες την Θείαν Δόξαν και ορώντες, βλέποντες τη Δόξα του Ιησού Χριστού, εις τον οποίον θα υπάρχει η θεωρία του Πατρός και του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Όταν είπε ο Κύριος εις τον Φίλιππον «εκείνος που με είδε, είδε τον Πατέρα», «εκείνος που με βλέπει, βλέπει τον Πατέρα», αυτό ήταν μυστηριώδες. Γιατί είπε ο μαθητής: «Δείξε μας τον Πατέρα και είναι αρκετό για μας». Τότε δεν μπορούσε να ολοκληρωθεί το πράγμα. Τότε αυτό θα πραγματοποιηθεί. Πώς θα βλέπουμε τον Πατέρα κατά το πνεύμα του Θεού;
ό,τι λέγαμε προηγουμένως για τη Θεία Δόξα, διότι θα αναστρέφεται με τους Αγίους Αγγέλους και θα είναι στον χώρο της Βασιλείας του Θεού εν δόξει. Οι ασεβείς θα έχουν και αυτοί αιώνιο σώμα, αλλά σκοτεινόν. Και θα είναι αιώνιον, διότι θα είναι, λέγει, υπομονητικόν, υπομονητικόν τιμωρίας αμαρτιών. Υπομονητικόν θα πει όχι ότι θα έχουν υπομονή, αλλά ότι θα υφίστανται το αιώνιον πυρ χωρίς άλωση, ανάλωση, χωρίς κατανάλωση. Να, να το ξαναδιαβάσω: «Ίνα εν πυρί αιωνίως καιόμενος, ασεβής, μηδέποτε αναλωθεί». Είναι το πυρ το αιώνιο που είπε ο Κύριος. Πώς είναι αιώνιον πυρ;
