Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem addresses pagans through signs in nature, while emphasizing that purified believers perceive the divine logoi within creation as genuine testimony. Abraham’s appeal to the Judge of all the earth implies a universal judgment encompassing every generation and therefore requiring the resurrection of the dead. Death entered through humanity’s disobedience and is contrary to nature, whereas Christ’s resurrection of the dead restores the human person—soul and body—to the life intended by God.

We are still in Saint Cyril’s book, his Catechetical Lectures, at paragraph eleven. Let me remind you that he is presenting arguments for the Resurrection of the dead: first against the Greeks, that is, the pagans; second against the Samaritans; and third, for the support of those who accept the Scriptures. Thus, his arguments in answer to the Greeks are drawn from nature, as I told you last time, and they are not proofs.
He regards them as proofs, but today we could not call them proofs. They are simply indications. Yet for the believer, even the things Saint Cyril mentions are proofs. And by “believer” I mean someone whose heart is pure, someone who has purified the heart from the passions. Such a person can discern, within nature itself, the realities written in the Word of God. He discerns them, while others do not. Let me remind you—let me remind you—of the logoi, the divine principles, of created beings.
We all see created beings. But only believers discern the logoi of created beings—and not believers in name only, but those who have attained some purification of the heart. You see, then, that nature itself bears witness alongside them and even takes part in the history of the children of God, the sons of God. Indeed, look at the Wisdom of Solomon, where it says that nature itself turns against the persecutors and comes to the aid of the godly. It gives an incomparable description there.
Truly incomparable. I am sorry; the thought has only just come to me, and I do not have the passage ready to read to you. It says that creation is armed, that it becomes a weapon against the ungodly, while the faithful—those whom God wills to shelter—are themselves sheltered through creation. Yes, that is why I told you that, for the pure in heart, what Saint Cyril says really is proof, not merely indication. But when we must answer the pagans, these things can only be indications for them, not proofs.
Now we come to the Samaritans, who used only one part of Holy Scripture and were, in many respects, a pagan people. They believed only in the Pentateuch of Moses and nothing else. Of the forty-nine books of the Old Testament, they accepted only five. We shall see this as we continue. Sadly, listen carefully, the Jews belonging to the party of the Sadducees held the same belief. Because of the population transfers and resettlements carried out by the Babylonians, the Assyrians, and others, the population of Samaria had been removed elsewhere and another population brought in to replace it.
The Turks are doing the same thing in Cyprus today: bringing in new inhabitants to settle there and alter the composition of the population. It is an old method, not a new one. For this reason, Samaria, which had been the northern kingdom, changed its character, so to speak. And therefore, if we may put it this way for a moment, they did have some grounds for their position. The Samaritan woman said to the Lord, “We say that God must be worshipped here. You Jews say that God must be worshipped on Zion, that is, in Jerusalem, on Mount Zion. Which is true?” First of all, the Lord told her that salvation is from the Jews, meaning that the Jews...
Yes, rightly so: those who also accept the prophets and the whole Old Testament. Pay attention to this: salvation is from the Jews. Christ came from the Jews, not from the Samaritans. But then He changes the whole framework: neither here, as you say, nor in Jerusalem will the true God be worshipped by the true worshippers, because God is worshipped everywhere. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Yet in the region of the southern kingdom, Judea, there was a group of people known as the Sadducees. They were Jews, but the terms “Sadducee” and “Pharisee” described their...
Position. In terms of ancestry, they belonged to the two tribes of Israel: the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin. Ethnically, they were the same; there was no difference. But there was a difference in their position—their position concerning faith, spiritual orientation, and what they accepted and acknowledged. That is why the Sadducees and Pharisees were called sects or parties. The Apostle Paul belonged to the Pharisees, as you will remember. In other words, he believed in the Resurrection of the dead, whereas the Sadducees did not. And you will remember the extraordinarily clever move the Apostle Paul made while defending himself.
He knew that some were Sadducees and others Pharisees. So he said, “I am on trial because I believe in the Resurrection of the dead.” The Pharisees then said, “Yes, perhaps this man has seen a vision,” because the Pharisees believed in the Resurrection of the dead. The Sadducees, however, did not. And so the Apostle Paul—this was his clever move—made his judges begin quarreling among themselves. You see, then, who the Sadducees were. We also find both Sadducees and Pharisees among the Levites, that is, within the priestly order. It was therefore quite natural that at times Pharisees would hold...
The high priesthood, because, as I told you, this was a matter of religious position. All those descended from the tribe of Levi were priests. At other times, Sadducees held it. When the Lord was judged, He was judged by a Sadducee high priest, Caiaphas. Caiaphas, his father-in-law Annas, and that whole wretched family were Sadducees. They did not believe in the Resurrection of the dead. Indeed, they believed only in the five books of the Old Testament. Can you imagine that the Sadducee high priests, Annas and Caiaphas, did not believe in the prophets?
I say this so that it will not surprise you, though it is a terrible state of affairs: a person may take up positions of authority even within the Church and yet not believe. It is incomprehensible to me, my dear ones, utterly incomprehensible. One might say to such a person, “My good man, go and do some other work. You are intelligent; you have hands, feet, eyes, and a mind. Go and do another job, since you do not believe, yet you are a clergyman and rise to high office. What account will you give?” Ah, forgive me—I was about to ask what account he would give to God, though he does not believe in God; he simply does not believe. For if he did believe, could such a thing ever happen?
Consider this situation carefully, so that you may see what dreadful things exist—and yet God tolerates them. I was telling you this in yesterday’s talk as well. What did Caiaphas say? Forgive me, no, it was Pilate who said it: “Do I not have the power to release You?” And what did the Lord answer? “It is not in your hands. It has been given to you by God.” This was permitted, my dear ones: the Lord was judged by Annas and Caiaphas, by Sadducees. The Sadducees, then, did not believe. Remember also another occasion, when some Sadducees went to test the Lord. It was shortly before His Passion.
They told Him that fabricated story—for it was indeed a story—about a woman whose husband died without children. According to the Law—and the requirement “according to the Law” is in the Law, though this particular incident is not written in the Old Testament—the second brother had to marry her. One brother married her, and eventually so did the seventh. Then the wretched Sadducees asked, “Whose wife will she be, since You, Jesus, uphold the Resurrection of the dead?” The Lord answered, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures.” You are utterly deceived because you do not know the Scriptures—not even those Scriptures that you yourselves accept.
You do not even interpret those correctly. And do you know what is important here? Perhaps you did not know this: in arguing for the Resurrection of the dead, Christ did not appeal to the prophets—to Ezekiel, for example, whom we read last time. He appealed instead to the books they accepted, namely the Pentateuch, and specifically to the book of Exodus, so as to silence them with arguments drawn from their own accepted texts. This is very significant. Following the example of our Lord, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem will now use the same approach, as we shall see in the points that follow, though we may not reach them at this moment.
We shall see it as we continue. “Let us turn, then”—paragraph eleven—“let us turn to the Samaritans, who accept only the Law and no longer acknowledge the prophets.” Now, he says, let us go to the Samaritans, having spoken about the Greeks. The Samaritans accept the Law, and “the Law” was the name given to the Pentateuch. It does no harm to expand a little on these matters, so that you may learn something more. In the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, Abraham speaks to the Rich Man in Hades. The Rich Man had asked Abraham to send Lazarus back into the world...
That is, to raise him from the dead.
So that Lazarus might warn his brothers not to come to that place of torment as well. And how did Abraham answer him in the parable? “My child,” he said, “they have Moses and the prophets.” Moses means the Law, the first five books, because he is the author of those books. They are called the Law, the books of Moses, or the Book, because all five books were contained in a single volume and called the Book. The Book of the Law consists of five books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Those are the five. Do you see how he refers to them? The Law.
And they also have the prophets. Christ Himself said, “I did not come to abolish the Law or the prophets.” So when we say “the Law and the prophets,” the whole Old Testament is included. Here, however, the Samaritans do not accept the prophets, but only the Law, the first five books, as I told you. “For them, it seems, the present reading from Ezekiel is of no effect.” At the beginning of his Catechetical Lecture, Saint Cyril read to his catechumens the same passage from Ezekiel that I read to you, the passage concerning the Resurrection of the dead, where the bones began to receive sinews and flesh and stood up as...
Human beings. This reading from Ezekiel remains ineffective as far as the Samaritans are concerned, since they do not accept the prophets. “For, as I have said, they do not accept the prophets. How, then, shall we persuade the Samaritans? Let us turn to what is written in the Law,” that is, in the first five books. “God, therefore, says to Moses: ‘I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob’”—the God, surely, “of those who exist and have being.” When God said to Moses, “Moses, Moses, come no closer. Take off your footwear. Stop and remove your sandals,” Moses was terrified and asked, “Lord, who are You?” “I am the Lord God, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” As I told you, this is the same argument Christ used against the Sadducees. Saint Cyril will use the same proof: “Surely, He is the God of those who exist and have being.” When God said, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,” He was plainly speaking as...
The God of those who already exist, of those who have being. “For if Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob have died and ceased to exist, is He then the God of those who do not exist?” You should know that the Sadducees believed neither in the soul, nor in angels, spirits, or demons. They believed only in God and in human beings as we see them now, and in nothing else. Therefore, Saint Cyril says, if Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died and ceased to exist, how could God say, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”? “Would He then be the God of those who do not exist?”
“Has any king ever claimed to reign over soldiers he does not have?” What king has ever said that he is king of soldiers who do not exist? “When has anyone ever displayed wealth he did not possess?” When, he asks, has anyone claimed to be rich because of wealth he did not have? “Therefore Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob must still exist.” They must be alive. “So that God may be the God of those who exist.” For God to be the God of the living. He could not say, “the God of Abraham.” He could have said...
Well... “I was the God of Abraham.” But He does not say, “I was the God of Abraham.” He says, “I am”—that is, “Now, as I speak to you, Moses, I am the God of Abraham.” This is precisely the argument that the Lord made in another way. Pay attention to this argument, which, as I told you, He addressed to the Sadducees. On another occasion He said this: they asked Him, “Did Abraham desire to see Your glory? What are You telling us? You are not yet fifty years old, while Abraham lived two thousand years ago, and yet he desired to see Your glory?” Now listen: by “glory” He meant the Incarnation—the Incarnation. Listen to His reply: “Abraham,” He says...
Very well! “Before Abraham was, I am.” Not “I was” or “I shall be,” but “I am.” “Before Abraham came into being, I am.” I exist before Abraham came into being. And Abraham desired to see My glory, and he saw it. Do you hear this mystery? “He saw it and rejoiced.” Therefore, when Christ came into the world—that is, when He became incarnate—Abraham rejoiced. Abraham therefore existed, for he rejoiced when he saw the Incarnation of the Son. So he was alive. Do you see how revealing this is? Yet one of Christ’s hearers at that time—this testimony is for us—could have objected...
Those hearers of Christ who did not believe, the Sadducees, could have said to Him, “That is what You say, but how are we to know? You are the one saying it.” Very well, then: take the Scriptures. And what do the Scriptures say? “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And God is not the God of the dead, Christ says, but of the living. In other words, they exist.
They are alive.
“For He did not say to you, ‘I was.’” He did not say, “I was,” but “I am.” Saint Cyril now turns to another point. “And to show that there is a judgment, what does Abraham say to the Lord?” This is another argument made by Saint Cyril. “Shall not the Judge of all the earth execute judgment?” These are Abraham’s words, spoken to the Holy Trinity before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. He says that there is a judgment. The One who judges the earth—all the earth—“shall He not execute judgment?” In other words, will He who is the Judge...
Of everyone not execute judgment? Will He not judge and establish His tribunal? What did Abraham say? “The Judge of all the earth.” And Abraham said this to God, as I repeat. But if He is to judge all the earth, this means that He will judge everyone who has ever lived and everyone now living. What kind of judgment would it be for God to judge all the earth otherwise? Someone might say that He will judge only those alive at the time. Let us suppose that the earth now has five billion people. Jesus Christ comes and becomes the Judge of mankind, of all the earth. I ask you: will He judge only those then living upon the earth, while all the others...
Lived sinful and ungodly lives, and so on? Will He not judge them as well? Would that not be strange? Therefore, when Scripture calls Him “the Judge of all the earth,” it means the Judge of the whole earth throughout every age and every generation. Thus, those who have died have not ceased to exist. What, then, are they awaiting? The Resurrection of the dead. But the foolish Samaritans object once again: “Let us grant that the souls of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob exist apart from their bodies; nevertheless, their bodies cannot rise.” Thank you.
Let us concede that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob still exist, they say, but that they exist only as souls. God, however, cannot raise their bodies. Pay attention: from this point onward, the entire force of the answer will fall upon these words: “cannot rise.” This is their argument against the Resurrection of the dead: that God cannot bring about the Resurrection of the dead. Did you notice? All the arguments will now be directed against this claim, “He cannot.” Saint Cyril therefore replies: “Was it possible for the staff of righteous Moses to become a serpent, yet impossible for the bodies of the righteous to live and rise?” God changed the staff of Moses into a serpent. You know this, do you not? Before Pharaoh, in order to persuade him, Moses performed two signs. Yet before Moses performed them before Pharaoh, God had shown them to Moses at the burning bush. He said to him, “Throw down your staff, your shepherd’s rod,” and at once the shepherd’s rod became a serpent. “Take hold of the serpent,” He said, “by its head.”
It became a staff once again. “You will do this before Pharaoh,” God told him. “Put your hand inside your garment, here against your breast.” Moses put it in. “Now take it out.” Moses drew it out, and his hand was white as snow—the white skin of a leper. His hand had become leprous. “Put your hand back inside,” God said. He put it in. “Now take it out.” He drew it out, and the natural color of his skin was restored.
By “color” we mean the natural complexion of the skin, whereas that whiteness was not its natural color. God told him, “You will go and do these things before Pharaoh,” and so he did, in order to persuade him. Saint Cyril now says here—not Moses, forgive me, but Saint Cyril—“God changed the staff of Moses into a serpent. Can He not, then, also raise Moses? Does He lack the power?” I remind you that the answer concerns the omnipotence of God, which the Samaritans call into question. “Yet can the bodies of the righteous not live and rise? What is contrary to nature came to pass, but what is according to nature cannot be restored?” What is contrary to nature? A piece of wood becoming a serpent. That is unnatural.
And what is according to nature? That the body which fell and died should rise again and stand upright. That is according to nature. Indeed, allow me, my God, to make one very brief comment here. When Christ raised the dead, the Lord may well have raised many more than the three known to us: the son of the widow of Nain, the daughter of Jairus, and Lazarus. Most likely He did, for John the Evangelist says that if everything were written down one by one, the books we would write could not be contained in all the libraries of the world. Yet here are three resurrections that Christ performed. Why did He perform them?
There were many reasons—many indeed. First, He gave assurance of the future Resurrection of the dead. There is a second reason, a third, a fourth—very many reasons contained within a single act. God said to our first-created parents, “On the day you eat of it, you shall surely die.”
Was Adam created to die? Therefore, what was according to nature was that he should not die. But when Adam ate and transgressed God’s commandment, that which is contrary to nature entered in—and what is contrary to nature is death. Death is unnatural and irrational. Listen: death is unnatural and irrational. Do you know why death is irrational? I was born; I grew up; I was educated; my nous, the spiritual intellect, developed, along with wisdom, and more wisdom, and still more wisdom—and of course I mean this of every human being; I use myself in the first person only to emphasize the point—and then I die. This is the great absurdity, an absurdity within creation. I ought to live. Why should I die? Indeed, why should I die? The question alone is enough: why should I die? For what reason? This is why death has been called the great caricature within creation. Death, therefore, is both irrational...
And unnatural. When Christ, our Creator, came into the world—the One who made us in Paradise—He desired to restore what was contrary to nature to what is according to nature. Therefore, the Resurrection of the dead is not, in its essence, the miracle. The miracle is the restoration from what is contrary to nature to what is according to nature. That is the miracle, because Christ restored humanity to its natural state. What is a miracle? We would say it is something supernatural. We call the supernatural a miracle. Christ did nothing contrary to the true nature He had created. He did what is natural. Thank you.
Truly, truly natural. He restored what is according to nature. From what did He restore it? From what is contrary to nature. Do you see, then, how matters stand here? Saint Cyril says, “And can what is according to nature”—the human person, soul and body together—“not be restored?” What is this restoration? It is the restoration from what is contrary to nature to what is according to nature. After all, it is not according to nature for wood to become a serpent, if you wish to put it that way; that is not restoration. “Aaron’s rod, though cut off and dead, sprouted without even the scent of water.” You know the account.
The question was who would receive the priesthood. This account is well known, for every tribe wanted the priesthood for itself. God willed it for the tribe of Aaron. So, to end their disputes and establish an everlasting memorial of God’s choice, He commanded every tribe to set down a dry branch. The tribe whose staff, whose branch, blossomed would possess the priesthood. Saint Cyril says, “without even the scent of water”—without being watered at all. Let me read and describe the text to you: “And although it was under a roof... it blossomed while lying in a dry place... and in a single night yielded the fruit produced by trees watered for many years.” In one night Aaron’s dry, utterly withered rod not only blossomed—do you hear?—but even produced almonds. The miracle was unmistakable and astonishing. Then every dispute among the tribes ceased. God had chosen the tribe of Levi. Saint Cyril now says, “Aaron’s rod rose, as it were, from the dead; and will Aaron himself not be raised?”
Astonishing! In one night a dry branch put forth leaves and almonds. Ordinarily it would need water, abundant life, and many years—a long time—to produce almonds. Yet this happened in one night! God, therefore, has the power. And since He has the power, Saint Cyril asks you—asks us: Aaron’s rod displayed this miracle in a single night. Will Aaron, who held the rod, not be raised? “In order to preserve the high priesthood for him, God worked a miracle in a piece of wood; yet will He not grant the Resurrection to Aaron himself?” God performed the miracle precisely to reveal the priesthood I spoke of earlier. Yet Aaron himself...
Will He not grant the Resurrection to Aaron himself? “A woman was changed, contrary to nature, into salt, and flesh was transformed into salt; yet can flesh not be restored to flesh?” This was Lot’s wife, who went from what was according to nature—a human being—to a pillar of salt, something unnatural. Does the human body ever become salt? It does not, and yet hers did. Something contrary to nature took place, and that is the more difficult thing. Is what is according to nature—flesh becoming flesh once again—impossible or difficult for God? “Lot’s wife became a pillar of salt; shall Abraham’s wife not rise?”
Will Abraham’s wife not be raised? “By what power was the hand of Moses transformed?” This is the hand I mentioned earlier, when God told him, “Put it inside your garment and take it out,” and it came out leprous, and so forth. “In a single hour it became white as snow and was restored again.” Here “in a single hour” means in an instant. It is an expression; his hand did not remain that way for a full hour. It means that within a brief moment he put in his hand and drew it out. In an instant, then, it went from healthy to leprous, and from leprous to healthy. “Clearly, this happened by divine command.” It happened because God commanded it. “Was the command then...”}]} thereby have met their needs. *
“Was His command powerful then, but no longer powerful now?” A fine argument. At that time, whatever God commanded had power and came to pass. Is God’s command that the dead should rise no longer powerful today? It is a very fine argument. As I told you, it concerns the omnipotence of God, because the Samaritans were attacking His omnipotence. Paragraph thirteen. “And from where, in the beginning, did man come to be at all, O most foolish of all men, Samaritan?” Where did man come from? What was the origin of man, O foolish Samaritan?
Foolish beyond every other man. “Come to the first book of Scripture”—the book that even you deign to accept. Come, he says, to the Book of Genesis, which you yourselves accept. As I explained, Saint Cyril confines his argument to the first five books. “And God formed man of dust from the earth.” God formed man from the earth, from dust. Notice how clear this is. God formed man “of dust from the earth.” Very well. Clay is changed into flesh, and yet flesh—the flesh that is to be restored once more—
Can flesh not be restored from flesh? “We must also ask: from where did the heavens, the earth, and the sea come into being?” How did the universe come to be—the seas, the heavens, the mountains, everything, all the stars? How did they come to be? “From where came the sun, the moon, and the stars? How did the birds and the swimming creatures come from the waters?” From where did they come? From the waters. How did birds and swimming creatures come from the waters? By “swimming creatures,” he means those that can swim, such as waterfowl, whose feet are adapted for swimming. “And how did all the animals come from the earth?”
How did all the animals come to be? From the earth—from what we might today call lifeless matter. “So many countless beings were brought from non-being into being.” Innumerable beings were brought forth and came into being from non-being—that is, as we might say, from lifeless matter. “And shall we human beings, who bear the image of God, not be raised?” We human beings were formed from dust and bear the image of God; can we not be raised? “Truly, this matter is filled with unbelief and brings great condemnation upon those who do not believe.” Truly, it reveals utter unbelief and leaves those who refuse to believe under grave condemnation.
When “Abraham says to the Lord, ‘He who judges all the earth,’” those who study the Law still do not believe. You accept the Law, you say that you accept it, and you learn and study it. Yet when Abraham says in the Book of Genesis, “He who judges all the earth,” you still claim, as I explained, that God does not raise the dead. You claim that the Lord will judge only the people living in a single generation, and no one else. You who study the Law, O Samaritans—and all the other Samaritans who have appeared throughout history—when it is written that man came from the earth—
“Those who read it do not believe.” Though it is written that man came from the earth, those who study and interpret Holy Scripture refuse to believe. Paragraph fourteen. “These words, then, are for those unbelievers; but for those who also believe the words of the prophets...” These arguments apply to those who do not believe. But for us who do believe, the prophets also belong to us—the Law and the Prophets together. Saint Cyril means that we therefore have abundant material by which to understand the Resurrection of the Dead. But now he turns aside again, because something else has come to mind.
“But since there are also some who make use of the prophets, yet bring before us that statement marked by an unbelief coming from outside...” and so forth. There are some who accept the prophets but do not believe what they said, or else interpret their words wrongly. Their first argument is: “The ungodly shall not rise in judgment.” In other words, the ungodly will not rise at the Judgment. This, as you know, comes from the first Psalm. The poor millennialists also use this argument from the first Psalm, because they do not accept the Resurrection of the Dead. They say that the hundred and—
Forty-four thousand—twelve times twelve, making 144,000—will not rise, but will live as spirits in heaven. They are supposed to be the chosen few. Speaking of the 144,000, twelve times twelve, one could object: You say that you belong to the 144,000. Very well. Tell me, how many millennialists are there in the world? At one time they might have answered fifty thousand or one hundred thousand; they had not yet reached 144,000. But now they are no longer 144,000. They are two hundred thousand, three hundred thousand, five hundred thousand, one million, two million, three million. I do not know how many millennialists there are throughout the world. So come now: you used to say that you belonged to the 144,000. What will happen to all the rest? What will become of them?
Let us tell you. You know, the millennialists always have an answer ready—always ready. They tell us that those beyond the 144,000 will be raised. But the Lord will ask them, “Have you repented?” If they answer yes, they will then live upon the earth, just as we know the earth now. That is why, they say, hearses will be turned into beautiful carriages for outings, and so on and so forth. What does this kind of argument resemble? Once, someone I know was asked a question. She was a young woman—not in Larissa or anywhere in Thessaly, but in Athens—who taught catechism. The children asked her, “How did they bake the manna in the desert? Did they have fire?”
She was completely stumped. What could she answer? So she said, “Children, they made little cakes, placed them in the sand, covered them, and the sand baked them.” In other words, she invented an argument on the spot and blurted it out. But that is no sound teaching. In the same way, the millennialists invent arguments when questioned and blurt them out. Their answer changes according to the circumstances. When the same subject appears elsewhere in Holy Scripture, they will have some other argument ready to offer you there. Now for the second objection. Some accept the prophets, yet point to certain passages which they claim testify that there will be no Resurrection of the Dead.
“For if a man descends into Hades, he shall never come up again.” Job said this. The man who descends into Hades, he says, does not come up again. So then, they ask, why do you speak to us about a Resurrection? Third: “The dead shall not praise You, O Lord.” This is from the thirteenth Psalm: the dead, O Lord, will not praise You. Since they are dead, how can they praise You? They conclude that the dead do not exist as conscious souls, since they cannot praise You—and they cannot do so because they are dead. Saint Cyril answers: “What has been rightly written, they wrongly understand in a confused manner. Let us, in passing and—”
“As something beyond our immediate subject, answer them.” What was rightly written, they interpret wrongly. Since Saint Cyril has remembered this matter in passing, he will answer those who used these three passages from the prophets as arguments. The Psalter belongs to the prophetic writings; it is not part of the Law. So, insofar as time and occasion permit, he says: “For if Scripture says that the ungodly shall not rise in judgment, this means that they shall rise not for judgment, but for condemnation.”
“For there is no need of a lengthy examination before God.” As soon as the ungodly rise, their punishment follows. There is another argument as well; I shall explain both. Saint Cyril’s argument is that they do not come for a judicial hearing, but for condemnation—that is, they are condemned. God will not conduct a legal process like the proceedings of an earthly court. We call witnesses and ask: What did you say? What did you do? None of that takes place, he says, because “as soon as the ungodly rise, their punishment follows.” No such process is needed. The moment they rise, their punishment follows. Why?
Because God knows all things; He has no need of witnesses or judicial proceedings. This is Saint Cyril’s argument. There is also another argument. As I told you, the first Psalm says that the ungodly “shall not rise in judgment.” This is the last or next-to-last verse. It says that the ungodly will not come forth, nor rise, at the Judgment. This means that when the hour of resurrection comes, they will certainly rise, but theirs will not be a resurrection of life; it will be a resurrection of judgment—that is, of condemnation. It is essentially the same argument, but I have expressed it differently. Other Fathers put it this way. No—the Scripture itself says it; Daniel says it, and we shall examine it, though not today. He says that some will rise to a resurrection of life, and others to a resurrection of judgment. Therefore, the ungodly will not rise to a resurrection of life, but to a resurrection of judgment. Let us continue.
“This shows that the appointed time for repentance and forgiveness is found only in this present life.” You know, it is very important for us to understand what this means. Forgive me—I am sorry. He has moved to the second argument, which I passed over. Concerning the words, “The dead shall not praise You, O Lord”—that is, the dead will not glorify You, O Lord—“this shows that the appointed time for repentance and forgiveness is found only in this present life, since those who have died will no longer praise You.” In other words, while you are in this present life, you have time to repent and to receive forgiveness of your sins,
and you can praise God. But after you die, you can no longer glorify God. If you ask why, the reason is very simple: your state of ungodliness will have become fixed. Then you cannot praise God—not because you lack vocal cords. David says somewhere, “Let me live and praise You, for who can praise You in Hades?” But in what sense is this true? Simply because when a person dies, the spiritual state in which he dies becomes fixed.
I ask you: Do the righteous in Paradise praise God? Certainly they do. Yet they have no vocal cords, because the body is absent. Thus, a person can praise God in the world to come, provided his state has not become fixed in ungodliness and sin. But when it has, he neither desires nor is able to praise God. Let me ask you this. Suppose a devil were to appear before you—do not be afraid. Some people tremble in such situations and go and put sealing wax over the keyhole to stop the devil from entering through it. Let us not be foolish, my beloved. The devil is beneath our feet. Holy Scripture says so.
We trample him beneath our feet, provided we do not obey his desires. Let us not be afraid. So, a devil, a Satan, appears before you, and you say to him, “Glorify God.” Will he glorify God? No. Why? He is unable. This is not because, as a spirit, he has no larynx—the angels praise God—but because he cannot. What is he unable to do? He is unable to praise, just as he is unable to love. He has become fixed in ungodliness. This means, my beloved, that when we depart from this present life, the moment we close our eyes, we will enter the other world as the very persons we have become in this life.
Pay close attention to this. I have told you this point time and again. But since I find it here, I must emphasize it once more. It is exceedingly important. We will not suddenly become fit for the Kingdom of God when we arrive there. Someone may say, “But will God not forgive me?” The point is that you yourself will be unable to say, “Forgive me, Lord.” Do the demons ask forgiveness from God? Why not? Because their state has become fixed—that is, settled and unchangeable. They cannot repent. So it will be with us, my beloved: if we depart from this present life, we will not be able to say, “Lord, forgive us.” What do you think would happen if the demons said, “My God and Lord, forgive us”?
Would the Lord forgive them? What do you think? Even then, if we asked God for forgiveness in Hades, would the Lord not forgive us? The truth is that we cannot repent. Our state becomes completely fixed. This teaches us many things. Saint Cyril adds: “After death, therefore, those who have died in their sins cannot praise God as those who have received His beneficence.” They cannot praise God, he says, because they died in their sins and remain in their sins. How could they praise God as those who have received His blessings? Quite simply, they remain in their sins. “They can only lament.” Nothing remains for them but to beat their breasts and mourn.
“For a hymn belongs to those who give thanks.” Praise and hymns belong only to those who glorify God and have learned to glorify Him. For in the life to come, the state of those who have been saved is also fixed. They can no longer sin again; you should know this. Just as sinners can no longer repent, so those who have been saved can no longer sin. “But lamentation belongs to those who are being scourged”—the lamentation of those who suffer the torments of Hell. “Therefore, the righteous will praise Him then; but those who have died in their sins no longer have any opportunity to offer praise.” They no longer have the opportunity to praise God. Here, “to confess” means to praise and glorify God. That is all for this evening, my beloved, and may the Lord bless you.

Αρχιερωσύνη, γιατί σας είπα, ήταν τοποθέτηση αυτό. Όλοι οι καταγόμενοι από τη φυλή του Λευί ήσαν ιερείς. Κι άλλοτε Σαδδουκαίοι. Τον καιρό που ο Κύριος εδικάστηκε, εδικάστηκε από Σαδδουκαίον αρχιερέα, δηλαδή τον Καϊάφα. Ο Καϊάφας, ο πεθερός του ο Άννας, αυτοί, όλο το σόι εκείνο, το τρισάθλιο εκείνο σόι, ήταν Σαδδουκαίοι. Δεν πίστευαν στην Ανάσταση των Νεκρών. Κι αν το θέλετε, δεν πίστευαν παρά μόνο στα πέντε βιβλία της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης. Το φαντάζεστε ότι οι αρχιερείς Σαδδουκαίοι, ο Άννας, ο Καϊάφας, δεν πίστευαν στους προφήτες;
Το λέγω, μη σας ξενίσει, αλλά είναι κατάντημα, ότι μπορεί κανείς να αναλάβει, είπα, τα αξιώματα και εις αυτήν την Εκκλησία και να μην πιστεύει. Ακατανόητο, αγαπητοί μου, μου είναι ακατανόητο. Θα έλεγε κανείς σ’ έναν τέτοιο άνθρωπο: «Άνθρωπέ μου, πήγαινε να κάνεις μια άλλη δουλειά. Έξυπνος είσαι, χέρια έχεις, πόδια έχεις, μάτια έχεις, μυαλό έχεις, άντε να κάνεις μια άλλη δουλειά, αφού δεν πιστεύεις και είσαι κληρικός και ανέρχεσαι επί αξιωμάτων υψηλών. Τι λόγο θα δώσεις;» Α, με συγχωρείτε, πήγα να πω τι λόγο θα δώσει στον Θεό, αφού δεν πιστεύει στον Θεό, αφού δεν πιστεύει. Διότι, αν πίστευε, θα ήταν δυνατόν ποτέ να υπάρξει;
Τι είναι το κατά φύσιν; Το σώμα που έπεσε, έγινε νεκρόν, να αναστηθεί πάλι και να σταθεί. Αυτό είναι κατά φύσιν. Όπως, μάλιστα, επιτρέψατέ, Θεέ μου, να κάνω ένα μικρό μικρό σχόλιο εδώ. Όταν ο Χριστός ανέστηνε τους νεκρούς, πιθανώς ο Κύριος να ανέστησε πολύ περισσότερους από τους γνωστούς μας τρεις: το γιο της χήρας της Ναΐν, την κόρη του Ιαείρου και τον Λάζαρο. Πιθανότατα, γιατί λέει ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης, αν έπρεπε να τα γράφουμε ένα προς ένα, τα βιβλία που θα γράφαμε δεν θα χωρούσαν στις βιβλιοθήκες του κόσμου. Είστε και τρεις Αναστάσεις που έκανε. Γιατί τις έκανε ο Χριστός;
«...πρόσταγμα ἰσχυρόν, νῦν δὲ οὐκέτι ἰσχυρόν;» Ωραίο επιχείρημα. Τότε ο Θεός ό,τι διέταξε ήτο ισχυρόν και γίνεται. Τώρα δεν είναι ισχυρόν το πρόσταγμα του Θεού να αναστηθούν οι νεκροί; Είναι πολύ ωραίο επιχείρημα. Στρέφεται, σας είπα, υπέρ της παντοδυναμίας του Θεού, που στρέφονται κατά της παντοδυναμίας του Θεού οι Σαμαρείται. Παράγραφος δεκάτη τρίτη. «Πόθεν δὲ καὶ ὅλως ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἐγενήθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος, ὦ πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἀνοητότατε Σαμαρεῖτα;» Από πού προήλθε ο άνθρωπος; Ποια ήταν η αρχή του ανθρώπου, ω ανόητε Σαμαρείτα;
Χιλιάδες, 12 επί 12, 144 χιλιάδες, αυτοί, λέει, δεν θα αναστηθούν, αλλά θα ζήσουν ως πνεύματα εις τον ουρανόν. Είναι η αφρόκρεμα. Γιατί μιλώντας για τις 144 χιλιάδες, 12 επί 12, θα μπορούσε κάπως να τους αντιπεί ότι εσείς λέτε ότι ανήκετε στους 144, μάλιστα. Πέστε μου, πόσοι είναι οι χιλιαστές στον κόσμο; Θα σας έλεγαν 50.000, 100.000, δεν είχαν φτάσει τους 144.000. Τώρα όμως δεν είναι 144.000: 200.000, 300.000, 500.000, 1.000.000, 2.000.000, 3.000.000. Δεν ξέρω πόσοι είναι οι χιλιαστές σε όλο τον κόσμο. Ελάτε εδώ τώρα, εσείς λέγατε ότι ανήκετε στους 144.000. Οι υπόλοιποι τι θα γίνουνε; Τι θα γίνουνε;
«Ούγαρεξε τάσος πόλης εστίμ χρίατω Θεώ» Ἅμα τῷ ἀναστῆναι τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς, ἀκολουθεῖ καὶ τὰ τῆς τιμωρίας. Υπάρχει κι άλλο επιχείρημα, θα σας πω και τα δυο. Το επιχείρημα του Αγίου Κυρίλου είναι ότι δεν έρχονται σε κρίση, ότι έρχονται εν κατακρίσει, δηλαδή καταδικάζονται. Διότι δεν θα γίνει διαδικασία εκ μέρους του Θεού, όπως γίνεται μια διαδικασία δικαστική. Παίρνουμε μάρτυρες, ρωτούμε: Τι είπες; Ποια ήταν τα πεπραγμένα σου; Δεν υπάρχει, λέγει, αυτό, απλούστατα διότι, ἅμα τῷ ἀναστῆναι τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς, ἀκολουθεῖ καὶ τὰ τῆς τιμωρίας. Δεν χρειάζεται. Μόλις αναστηθούν, ακολουθεί και η τιμωρία. Γιατί;
Προσέξατέ το αυτό. Και άλλη και άλλη φορά σας το έχω πει αυτό το σημείο. Αλλά, μια που το βρίσκω εδώ, δεν έχω παρά να σας το τονίσω. Και είναι πάρα πολύ σημαντικό. Γι’ αυτό δεν θα είμεθα κατάλληλοι για τη Βασιλεία του Θεού όταν βρεθούμε εκεί. Θα λέγει κάποιος: «Μα, δεν με συγχωρεί ο Θεός;» Το θέμα είναι ότι εσύ δεν θα μπορείς να πεις: «Συγχώρεσέ με, Κύριε». Οι δαίμονες ζητούν συγχώρεση από τον Θεό; Γιατί; Διότι παγιώθηκε — παγιώθηκε, θα πει σταθεροποιήθηκε — η κατάστασή τους. Δεν μπορούν να μετανοήσουν. Έτσι κι εμείς, αγαπητοί μου, αν φύγουμε από την παρούσα ζωή, δεν θα μπορούμε να πούμε: «Κύριε, συγχώρεσέ μας». Τι θα πιστεύατε αν οι δαίμονες έλεγαν: «Θεέ μου, Κύριε, συγχώρεσέ μας»;
