Summary
The lecture introduces Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s eighteen pre-baptismal Catecheses and five Mystagogical Catecheses, which explain the Creed and the sacramental life. Saint Cyril’s eighteenth Catechesis addresses the holy catholic Church, the resurrection of the body, and eternal life through Ezekiel’s vision of the dry bones. Hope in the resurrection is presented as the root of every good work because confidence in judgment and eternal recompense strengthens believers to resist sin and practice righteousness.

With the help of God, our God who is the Holy Trinity, we now begin our Monday talks. As you may remember from last year, our subject is the Catecheses of Saint Cyril.
Let me remind those who heard the previous talks—or simply explain for those joining us for the first time—that Saint Cyril’s Catecheses number twenty-four in all: one Procatechesis, eighteen Catecheses before Baptism, and five Catecheses after Baptism known as the Mystagogical Catecheses.
The Procatechesis is simply an admonition that those seeking Baptism must be sincere in their intention to receive it. The eighteen Catecheses are nothing other than an extensive exposition of the Creed. The eighteenth Catechesis is the last of them, and so we have now reached the final Catechesis. With God’s help, we shall examine it under two articles: first, “I look for the resurrection of the dead,” and second, “the life of the age to come.”
That is the second article. The five Mystagogical Catecheses, as their name suggests, concern the exposition and understanding of the Mysteries and the sacramental life—Baptism, the Holy Eucharist, and so forth—and of the spiritual life in general. These five Mystagogical Catecheses are not very long; they are not as extensive as the others. With God’s help, we begin with the eighteenth Catechesis, which, as I told you, is the last of the Catecheses. In those days, of course, people who were to be baptized as adults first received catechesis: they were taught both the content of the faith and the spiritual life. Unfortunately, when infant Baptism became the established custom—it had, of course, existed since the time of the Apostles, though it was not yet the general rule—if a household with small children or infants became Christian, parents and all, they did not leave the children unbaptized. They baptized them. The only difference was that infant Baptism was exceptional, while the established custom was...
We might say that adult Baptism was the established custom, and it was, of course, preceded by catechesis. Children and infants had a godparent—one who received them and undertook to catechize the child at the proper time, once the child had grown older. The godparent was naturally a baptized member of the Church. This remains the case to this day: no one can baptize a child unless he himself has been baptized. That is self-evident. The work of the godparent was therefore of the utmost importance. Yet, as you see, infant Baptism became the established custom.
We are baptized as little children. I would say that, up to a point, there is nothing wrong with this, but on one condition: there must be a proper godparent, and afterward the Church must provide catechesis. If that is the case, then there is no problem. Indeed, it is well known that once a child is baptized, the child can receive Holy Communion; an unbaptized child cannot. That is the disadvantage of remaining unbaptized, because Baptism is the gateway to all the other Mysteries—the gateway. Infant Baptism is therefore a good thing, provided that the Church is properly organized and that there are worthy godparents who will undertake the child’s catechesis afterward.
Today, of course, the godparent is treated as nothing more than a decorative figure in society. We choose one because he is wealthy and can give gifts to the godchild, or because he is someone we like, or for any other reason you care to name. Perhaps we want to establish ties with another family, or we may even have our eye on certain advantages, opportunistically thinking that we might gain something from that person, and so forth. The point is that the godparent no longer performs the proper work he was meant to do. It all falls into a void. It falls into a void. No hope remains except...
for the Church to undertake the work of catechesis. And since we are speaking about godparents, I have told you this before and I shall tell you once again, because the responsibility is a grave one: do not rush to baptize children and then boast that you have baptized so many of them. If you know that the family whose child you are to baptize is devout and will allow you to catechize the child later, then by all means baptize the child. But if you know that this will not happen, do not take such responsibilities upon your shoulders. This is a serious matter. The responsibility is great. You must always feel responsible for telling your godson or goddaughter...
even things concerning the spiritual life: “My child, be careful. There are corrupt groups and bad companions; there are sins, sins of the flesh, and all these dangers. My child, go to catechism classes, go to church, and say your prayers.” Those who baptized a child have a duty to say these things to that child. Do you hear me, please? Otherwise, do not undertake this role. Be careful; do not undertake it. I myself have never baptized anyone. I have never baptized a single child. I only served as a marriage sponsor for a few people, and they divorced. But in any case, the role of a marriage sponsor is also serious, because in a certain sense he is the sponsor...
of the Mystery of Holy Matrimony for the two people being married. At the time, I was much, much younger than the people whose marriage I sponsored. That was wrong—quite wrong. I think I was an adolescent, if I remember correctly. Yes, I was an adolescent. So what can an adolescent know about helping when something goes wrong between a married couple? The marriage sponsor, then, is the sponsor of the Mystery of Holy Matrimony. When something goes wrong within the marriage, he should help. But in order to help, he must be a sound and respectable person, of an appropriate age, older than those whose marriage he sponsors, and possessed of knowledge, clear judgment, and purity of heart...
so that he may be able to help. I said “purity of heart” because, unfortunately, the marriage sponsor often becomes the third person in the relationship—let those who understand, understand. Great care is required. You may ask, “What are these things you are telling us?” Yes, this is what I am telling you, so that we may compare the reality with what now exists in our lives and see how far we have departed from it. This is extremely important and serious. And if we cannot bring the masses back, then at least those who understand should preserve these things in their own lives, as individuals...
and in small groups, even if we cannot correct the larger group, the great mass of people, or society as a whole. This, then, is the purpose of the Catecheses. As you see, I am giving this brief introduction as the first talk of the new year, 1989–1990.
May He help us to carry through to the end whatever He and His love permit us to accomplish. I would also like to tell you that this Catechesis ought to have been delivered as Saint Cyril delivered it in those days—to those who were preparing to be baptized. You understand, then, that we ought all to be present. Of course, if I were to ask where...
Where is the city of Larissa? I do not know—does it have 150,000 people? That is what they say. Fewer? I do not know. Where are they? We ought to hold catechesis in a stadium, or in various local venues, so that the people can receive instruction. You see, then, that although you have filled the church here—and I glorify God for that; I praised you yesterday and I praise you again today, because it is Monday, the hour is late, and yet you remain with such interest to listen—the whole city ought to be present. At the very least, you must not be absent. You should be here, knowing that what you receive is not a luxury. It is the work the Church undertakes to do. The Church offers you this catechesis. I am part of the Church.
I am not outside the Church, outside the church building, or beyond the bounds of what the Church means: the Body of Christ. The Church therefore offers you this catechesis, making, as I believe you can see, every effort to correct our lives, to give us knowledge of the faith, and to correct our conduct—in other words, to help us acquire a spiritual life. Catechesis has these two aspects; do not forget that. It is not only a matter of learning certain things. We must also correct ourselves. Do not forget this. What we hear must therefore be put into practice. With these few words, my dear friends, let us begin our examination of the eighteenth Catechesis—the last, as I told you, before Baptism.
I shall read you its title: “A Catechesis for Those Preparing for Illumination, delivered extemporaneously in Jerusalem, on the words: ‘And in one holy catholic Church’; ‘and the resurrection of the flesh’; and ‘life everlasting.’ The reading is from Ezekiel: ‘The hand of the Lord came upon me, and the Lord brought me out in the Spirit and set me in the midst of the plain’”—the word means a level plain—“and it was full of human bones,” and so forth. The title tells us that this Catechesis is addressed to those preparing for illumination, that is, those who are very close to being baptized.
Those who were still some way from Baptism were called catechumens. Catechumens on the eve of their Baptism were called those preparing for illumination. Thus, this Catechesis for those preparing for illumination was delivered in Jerusalem. Its subject is the final articles of the Creed, and it also includes a reading from a passage in Ezekiel concerning the Resurrection of the Dead. Whenever we have examined the titles of the Catecheses, you may remember that we have never read the appointed passage, though every heading includes one. Today, however, we shall make an exception and read it.
We shall examine this reading from Ezekiel, which is wondrous and speaks precisely of the Resurrection of the Dead. We also read it at Matins (Orthros) on Great Saturday, after we return to the Church with the Epitaphios. Many people leave afterward; they scatter somewhere along the way and do not come back inside.
Please remain for this passage from Ezekiel. There is also an epistle reading and a Gospel reading, followed by the dismissal—that is, the litany and so forth, and then the final dismissal. Thus, a great many people never hear this wondrous prophecy, which I shall now read to you. I shall not explain it all, because that would take too long. I shall only say that it concerns the Resurrection of the Dead. If you read further down, where it says that this refers to the house of Israel, you might at first suppose that—because the Israelites would return from the Babylonian captivity and so forth—it is merely a prophecy of a historical event: the resurrection of the people, meaning their deliverance from Babylonian captivity and their return home. If you ask how the Jews interpret this passage—it belongs to their Scriptures—you may be interested to hear their interpretation.
Their theologians interpret it just as I have told you: Ezekiel is speaking of the people’s rising again from captivity and the restoration of their state. But the Jews see the Old Testament simply as a record of their history. How do Christians interpret the Old Testament? We understand the history of Israel as typology: a type and image of good things or events yet to come. This is the tremendous difference. Thus, when a Christian interprets a prophecy, he sees before him...
two dimensions before him. The first is the historical dimension. Please pay close attention from this point onward, if you want to understand Holy Scripture correctly and if you do not want anyone to lead you astray by saying, “Look at what it says further down.” Yes, but there is more to it. So, the first is the historical dimension. Yes, it is history, and it may also prophesy a historical event. For example, the prophecies of Daniel refer to two events that were to come. The first would be the restoration of the Jews. Then would come a type of the Antichrist: Antiochus Epiphanes, Antiochus IV, one of the successors of Alexander the Great. After that would come the antitype,
the Antichrist—the prototype in which the type finds its ultimate fulfillment—at the Last Things (eschata), at the end of history. If someone cannot discern how a prophecy is to be interpreted, he will understand nothing and will go astray. The Lord said that Jerusalem would be destroyed, and this came to pass. That is one event. Yet this event also points, as an image and a type—a typological foreshadowing—to things yet to come. To what? To the end of the world. Would you like a small proof? I have told you these things before, last year and the year before. After speaking about the fall of Jerusalem, He says, “And then,” and immediately continues, “the sun and the moon will be darkened,”
“then they will see the sign of the Son of Man,” and so on. Therefore, the prophecy here is an image of other things that will follow. Did you hear what I said? It is an image or a type, depending on the case, of other things to come. And among those later things may be the final fulfillment. Thus, when Ezekiel receives in his vision the image of the resurrection of the dead, and God reveals it to him, then yes, in the first dimension—the historical one—it signifies the return of the Jews from captivity to Palestine.
The second dimension is the resurrection of the dead, which will take place when the end of the world comes. Do you understand? This is a key to interpretation. Unless you hold on to it, you will never understand anything. And not only will you fail to understand, but there is also the danger that some clever fellow—who is himself deceived, of course—will lead you in circles and say, “Look, things are not this way here; they are that way.” That is how the Jews interpret the Old Testament. So now I shall read you this wondrous prophecy. It is found in chapter 37, verses 1 through 14. The Prophet Ezekiel says:
“The hand of the Lord came upon me, and the Lord brought me out in the Spirit and set me in the midst of the plain”—that is, in the middle of a broad valley—“and it was full of human bones,” full of human bones. “And He led me all around them; and behold, there were exceedingly many upon the face of the plain”—bones, bones, bones, a great many—“and behold, they were exceedingly dry.” “Exceedingly dry” means that they had no skin upon them, no flesh, nothing at all.
They are bones in an ossuary, dry bones. “And He said to me”—God said to me—“Son of man, can these bones live?” Tell Me, man, “son of man,” tell Me: can these bones live? And I said, “O Lord, Lord, You know these things.” You know. And He said to me, “Prophesy over these bones and say to them.” The bones are before you; you are to prophesy and speak to them. You are to say to the bones, “O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.” You see, God brings this about through the prophet, just as He divided the Red Sea through the rod of Moses. God does not intervene directly.
He acts indirectly, just as He works His miracles through His Saints. Where are the Protestants, so that they may hear this? “Thus says the Lord to these bones.” The Lord says the following to these bones: “Behold, I will bring upon you the breath of life; I will put sinews upon you and bring flesh upon you.” I will give you the breath of life; I will put sinews and flesh upon the bones. “And I will spread skin over you, put My Spirit within you, and you shall live.” I will complete the work with skin; I will give you the breath of life, and you will live. “And you shall know that I am the Lord.” Then you will see My power and know that I am God, the One and Only. There is no other God. “So I prophesied as He commanded me.” I prophesied as the Lord instructed me. “And as I prophesied, behold, there was an earthquake, and each bone drew near to the bone with which it belonged.”
Each bone went and found the next one. For example, here in my arm there are two bones, then farther down there are the wrist and the fingers. Every little bone, every bone, went and found the one that belonged with it and fitted into place—all this in the vision—“each one according to its proper joining,” fitting together. “And I looked, and behold, sinews and flesh were growing upon them.”
Sinews and flesh were growing upon them, “and skin spread over them from above, but there was no breath in them.” There was still no life. “Then He said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath, son of man; prophesy and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord.’”
“Come from the four winds and breathe into these dead, that they may live.” Breathe into them, and they will live. This strongly reminds us—not just a little—of the first act of creation, when God took dust from the earth: the body now appeared lifeless, and then He breathed into it, and it received life. But to interpret this precisely, I must tell you that there was no interval of time between the creation of the human being and the breathing in of the soul. There was no interval at all. Body and soul came into being together. Yet for the sake of description, it appears that one came first and the other afterward. You may ask, “Was there no other way to describe it?” No. Then why was it described in this way?
I will tell you why: to place emphasis on the second act. To emphasize the second, the account had to be given in this way. Why the emphasis? Because the one is fashioned from earth by the hands of God—the hands of God—while the other, the soul, comes through the breath of God. And do you know what the hands of God are? What are the hands of God? I was telling the children this yesterday. Did you hear it? No? You will hear it now. It is what we say in Psalm 118: “Your hands have made me and fashioned me.” We say this especially at funerals, when we recite verses from Psalm 118. What are the hands of God? The hands of God are the Son and the Holy Spirit. The beautiful teaching of Saint Irenaeus tells us that
the hands of God are the Son and the Holy Spirit. With these two hands He creates man. To express it in human terms, we would say, “in Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit.” This is why we so often find these expressions, especially in the Apostle Paul: “in Christ Jesus, in the Holy Spirit.” We cannot adequately convey this merely by translating the words. Take care: a literal translation would say, “inside Christ, inside the Holy Spirit.” That tells us nothing. We cannot fully render the expression, so we would leave it as it stands. Its meaning is what I have told you: the Son creates. The Father creates through the Son in the Holy Spirit.
The Son creates, and the Holy Spirit sustains. Thus, with His two hands, God creates man. This is why we say, “Your hands have made me and fashioned me.” It is wondrous, truly wondrous. And here it says that there was no breath within them and that it was to be given in a second act. Do you know what this second act signifies? The souls will depart from Hades to be reunited with the bodies prepared for them—bodies restored to their proper order—so that they may rise and the whole human person may live. When it says here, “from the four winds,” it means from the four... As you know, the word “spirit” can also mean “wind.” “From the four winds” means from the four points of the compass: north, south, east, and west.
“From the four winds, breathe into these dead, that they may live.” Listen to how this appears in Holy Scripture. Christ said, “And then the angels will gather from the four points of the compass—from east and west, north and south—all mankind.” This signifies the universal resurrection. See, please, the precision of Scripture, if only a person can perceive these things even a little. “So I prophesied as He commanded me”—I prophesied as He instructed me—“and the breath entered into them.” For souls do not die. As we have said, they are either in Hades or, in the case of the devout and righteous who are with Christ, in Paradise. But then, after the resurrection of the dead, even Paradise will no longer exist.
It will no longer be needed. Nor will Hades exist; it too will no longer be needed. Instead, there will be the Kingdom of God and Hell. “And they lived and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great assembly.” Now they lived and stood upon their feet; they came to life, and they were many, many, many—all of them. My beloved, this is what Saint Cyril read to his catechumens in those days. I too have read it to you, and after the reading, let us now see how he begins his Catechesis. The root—paragraph one, paragraph A: “The hope of the resurrection is the root of every good work.”
“For the expectation of recompense strengthens the soul for the doing of good works. Every laborer is ready to endure hardship if he foresees the reward for his labor; but when people toil without reward, the soul collapses together with the body. A soldier who expects prizes is ready for battle; but no one serving under an unjust king, who offers no reward for hardship, is ready to die for him. In the same way, every soul that believes in the resurrection rightly takes care of itself.”
“But the soul that does not believe in the resurrection gives itself over to destruction.” So, the first line says: “The root of every good work is the hope of the resurrection.” The passage I read to you unfolds the meaning of this line through examples, which I shall explain a little further on. The root of every good work, then, is the hope of the resurrection. Yes. “Good work” has a broad meaning here. It is not simply what we mean when we say, “This person performs charitable works,” referring to almsgiving. Its meaning is broader: it means every good deed.
Every deed can be a good deed, even keeping myself free from sins of the flesh. Why did I choose that example? Because Saint Cyril speaks about this a little further on. That is what he discusses. It is a good deed. Thus, “good works” does not mean charity or almsgiving in the narrow sense, but every good deed in the broad sense. The root of every good deed, then, is the hope of the resurrection of the dead. Why? Because when I know that I shall rise and that the other person will rise as well, I will do evil neither to myself nor to my neighbor.
During the question period, I told you that the setting of this present world simply changes, and we find ourselves in another world. I gave you the example of actors performing on a stage: one kills and another is killed; one lives and another dies. When the performance ends, they all appear before the audience on the stage. The curtain closes, and all the actors are behind it. The audience applauds, as I told you. I repeat this example because many of you were not here from the beginning—or rather, you were not here during the question period. The curtain opens, and the audience applauds; but all the actors are there: those who killed and those who were killed, those who lived
and those who died. They are all present. Thus, the stage of this world will change, and that other stage will come—the one that will never change. The resurrection of the dead is the final earthquake. Holy Scripture speaks of three earthquakes—three earthquakes. The first earthquake... Or rather, let us speak of the last one. As Saint Gregory the Theologian explains, the final earthquake is the one seen by the Prophet Ezekiel: the resurrection of the dead. The resurrection of the dead is the final earthquake. You see, “earthquake” here means a shifting of events.
For when we speak of an earthquake, we mean something that shakes. Whatever is moved, whatever is shaken, is shifted from one state to another. What is shifted? One of the three earthquakes, he says, is the passage from idolatry to the Law. And what is the second earthquake? The passage from the Law to the Gospel. And the third earthquake is the Resurrection of the dead. There, I have completed the explanation for you. Sometimes I think I should not tell you all these things, because it becomes a little long-winded, but never mind. Do you understand? It means that something is being moved. God says, “Behold, I shake the earth.” “Behold, I shake the earth.” And He says, “Yet once more I shake the earth.” I shall shake the earth one more time, for the final time. This is the Resurrection of the dead.
We saw this earlier in Ezekiel’s prophecy. When someone knows that he will rise again, he will never wish to commit injustice or to sin. A little later Saint Cyril will speak to us about the body as the temple of God. But it is better to leave that until we reach the passage. Here he says, you see, that a person who believes in nothing is ready to commit every kind of injustice. The believer wonders and says, “But why do these people commit such injustices, such dreadful sins?” Because they have nothing within them; they have nothing at all. Listen: by virtue of being made according to the image of God, we may possess many things.
But if we have smeared and defaced that image until it has become unrecognizable, and if God is no longer within us because we have cast Him out and denied Him, then everything is permitted. Then we can no longer speak of conscience. It is a dreadful condition; it is what is called deadening. Such a person is now dead, and this dead person can never rise again—morally and spiritually, of course. He has deadened his conscience. It is dreadful. The devout person is bewildered, and rightly so, because he cannot understand how another human being can act in this way. Yet, as I told you, this is how matters stand. The other person is dead; he does not believe. But if you believe, then everything changes. There is a story that perhaps you know.
A missionary once went to Africa and preached Christianity. He spoke about the Resurrection of the dead. At that moment the tribal chief stood up and said, “Impossible! It is impossible for the dead to rise.” “Why?” the missionary asked him. “Can those whom I have slaughtered or eaten possibly rise again?” The man had his reasons for being unable to accept the Resurrection of the dead. Sinful people likewise have their reasons for not seeking or accepting the Resurrection of the dead. The Millenarians say that when the devout and the ungodly rise from the dead, God will ask the ungodly, “Do you repent?” What nonsense! Who would say no at that point? Otherwise, they say, whoever declares that he does not repent will be reduced to nothing and pass into nonexistence. Thus, for the Millenarians there is no Hell; there is only the Kingdom of God. But what madman would say then, “I do not repent”? Yet there is something still more serious: these people abolish Hell and create the myth that Hell does not exist. And anyone who wishes to go on sinning dearly loves the myth
of nonexistence after death and of there being no resurrection of the body. What could be more appealing to a sinner than the thought that he will die and never live again? But whether you like it or not, my brother, it is God’s plan that everyone should rise—the devout and the ungodly alike—and all will give an account before God. Saint Cyril now says this in order to establish that the Resurrection—meaning eternal life—is the motive and the reward for every good work. And he says that...
the laborer is ready to endure toil and hardship—“to endure his labors, if he foresees the reward for those labors.” If he expects and trusts that he will be paid, then of course he is willing. In other words, the Resurrection of the dead is the motive for good works. Again, he asks, what soldier would not expect prizes, honors, and decorations? What foolish person would submit himself to a king and die for him without receiving anything in return? In other words, the Resurrection of the dead is the reward, or the Resurrection of the dead is the recompense for our labors.
But I hasten to point something out, because this teaching in particular was attacked by Kant and by others. To keep and live by the virtues for the sake of a reward is not something inferior. The motive of reward is neither base nor demeaning. No! You are not expected to live virtuously without any reward being set before you. I told you once, many years ago, when we were interpreting the Apocalypse, that reward does not mean simply that I shall be paid. Somewhere near the end, in the last or next-to-last chapter—I do not remember exactly—it says that...
that...
Jesus Christ, riding upon a horse, comes to give the devout their reward. He says, “And My reward is with Me.” As a first rendering, we might say that He has the reward in His pocket. “It is with Me,” just as we carry money to pay other people—in our wallet or our pocket.
Pay close attention to the text: “My reward is with Me.” The image, of course, shows that He is going to pay the reward of those who followed Him. But He says, “My reward.” What does this mean? It means that there are two rewards here: Christ’s reward—for He says, “My reward”—and the believer’s reward. What is the believer’s reward? The believer’s reward is Christ. Why did I labor throughout my life? So that I might see Christ. This is my reward: to behold the person of Christ. The believer’s reward, then, is Christ. And what is Christ’s reward? Christ too died upon the Cross. He has a reward because, from the moment He became man, He has a reward. God does not receive a reward, but Christ receives one in His human nature. And what is Christ’s reward? For He says, “My reward.” Christ’s reward is the believer. That is, the believer...
receives Christ as his reward, and Christ receives the believer as His reward. In other words, the believer makes Christ his own, and Christ makes the believer His own. This is the meaning of reward. Who can attack it now? Who can object to it? It is just as we were saying. I have now remembered an example to give you. Please forgive me, of course, if I sometimes use a somewhat bolder example.
A man sees a young woman. He likes her very much and wants to marry her. At the same time, she sees him, likes him very much, and wants to marry him. When they marry, what is his reward?
After seeing the woman he wished to make his own, what is the man’s reward? His wife, his spouse. And what is the wife’s reward? Her husband. Is there anything base in this motive, I ask you? Certainly not. Do you see how matters stand?
Well... “Thus every soul that believes in the Resurrection rightly takes care of itself; but the soul that does not believe in the Resurrection gives itself over to perdition.” He means the following: if a person believes that the Resurrection will take place, then without question he takes care of himself. Since Saint Cyril has spoken about the soul, the text says that the soul “takes care of itself,” and quite naturally so. That is, if I know that I shall not be reduced to nothing, then I guard myself. Against what? Against sinning. By contrast, if someone does not believe in the resurrection of the flesh, he gives himself over to perdition. He will be lost and ruined. But he will not be reduced to nothing. Pay attention: the word “perdition,” or “loss,” does not mean annihilation. It does not mean that we pass into nonexistence. It means the eternal separation of the human person from God. That is perdition. It is not annihilation. Saint Cyril now gives a beautiful and very striking example. He says:
“He who believes that the body remains for the Resurrection takes care of his garment and does not defile it through fornication; but he who does not believe in the Resurrection gives himself over to fornication, abusing his own body as though it belonged to another.” Of course, I do not know whether you are aware of this—though after all we have said, I believe you are—but I shall say it once more. When we speak of the Resurrection, we mean the resurrection of the body. I do not think anyone is unaware of this, for the simple reason that the soul does not die; it goes to the place appointed for it. It is the body that dies.
The body is dissolved—that is, it decomposes—because it has been separated from the soul. Since the soul is immortal—and it is immortal not by nature, but because God wills it to be immortal—the body undergoes corruption and dissolution. Therefore, when we speak of the Resurrection, we do not mean a resurrection of souls, because the souls continue to exist as they are. We mean the resurrection of bodies. Moreover, the Greek verb anistēmi, or its middle form anistamai, means “to stand up.” The soul has no feet with which to stand. It does not turn over, fall, sleep, lie down, or rise to its feet. It is the body that lies horizontally or rises—that is, stands up. Therefore...
Resurrection, from anistēmi or anistamai, means the rising of that which has fallen, and that is the body. When the body dies, it is called a corpse. The Greek word for corpse comes from the verb “to fall,” because when a person dies, his body no longer stands upright but falls. Thus the body becomes a fallen corpse: it no longer stands but has fallen. When, then, we speak of Resurrection, we mean that what has fallen rises again: from death and corruption the human body is restored to wholeness, reunited with the immortal soul that already exists, and the human person is made whole. I do not think anyone was unaware of this. I suppose my explanation was more than necessary, because all of you certainly know that we are speaking about the resurrection of the body. When we speak of the resurrection of the soul, that is a spiritual resurrection—or, as we might say today, though I do not like the term, a moral resurrection. It is nothing other than spiritual resurrection. Saint John the Evangelist calls this the first Resurrection. Later he speaks of the second Resurrection.
He says that whoever does not come forth from the first Resurrection cannot receive the second Resurrection, which is, of course, unto eternal life. What is the first Resurrection? The first Resurrection takes place while we are alive, and it is the resurrection of our soul. The resurrection of the soul means that the fallen soul returns to God. The soul has fallen; the image of God has fallen. We must return to God—that is, receive the message of salvation. Then the second Resurrection will come, when the angel sounds the trumpet and the bodies rise
together with the soul that has already been raised in this present life. That Resurrection will then be a resurrection unto eternal life. Is this clear? I believe you have understood it. I hope I shall not need to repeat it as we proceed through the eighteenth Catechesis. Saint Cyril gives an example. As I told you, the person who believes that the body remains for the Resurrection takes care of its garment. By “garment” he means the garment of the soul, which is the body. We might say, then, that the body is the adornment of the soul. There are many such expressions.
No, not its adornment—its clothing, forgive me. Its garment, its clothing. The body is the clothing of the soul. Of course, the Fathers say—and this is neither contradictory nor mistaken; it is simply another way of expressing it—that the body does not contain the soul, but the soul contains the body. We can understand this. We can understand both ways of putting it. Nevertheless, the bond between soul and body remains incomprehensible to us. It is incomprehensible; it is a Mystery. Thus, Saint Cyril says, the person who believes in the Resurrection does not defile the soul’s garment, the body. What does this mean? Since the body will rise again, it will bear all the marks of sins of the flesh. Why does he speak here of fornication? The Apostle Paul says—and this will help us understand it—in the sixth chapter of First Corinthians: “Every sin is outside the body; but he who commits fornication sins against his own body.” Why? It is an incomprehensible mystery. Only the Word of God reveals it to us. If I steal with my hands, it is not my body that sins; my soul sins. But in sins of the flesh, the body sins as well. That is why he says that “every sin” is outside the body, while the person who commits fornication sins against the body. As I tell you, it is incomprehensible. This means that when the human person rises, then...
there will be on the body an ontological seal—I emphasize, an ontological seal—marking that person as unfit to enter the Kingdom of God. It will be the seal of the sins of the flesh. Here the word “fornication” means every kind of sin of the flesh. Consequently, the body will be unfit to enter the Kingdom of God, unless the person has repented during this present life and no longer repeats those sins. Then this ontological seal is erased. This ontological reality is something extraordinary. Perhaps—and I have been studying this for years, so I cannot speak to you with certainty—perhaps this is why, in relation to Holy Orders, sins of the flesh are indeed forgiven through confession, yet they remain an irrevocable impediment to proceeding to Holy Orders. Irrevocable. In other words, you cannot become a priest. It is a permanent impediment. You should know this. If a young man is considering becoming a priest, he may have impediments of this kind. And then what happens? What happens? This is why the greatest possible care is needed. Parents, watch over your children, especially your boys. Be very careful about this, as much as you can. Do not let your children fall into sins of the flesh—and the same applies to your girls, because a young woman
who has fallen into a sin of the flesh cannot become a priest’s wife, because “the two shall become one flesh.” Both the priest and the priest’s wife must be free of impediments to Holy Orders. You may say that these are very serious matters. But we are speaking about serious matters, my dear friends. God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Κάποιος... Κάποιος άντρας βλέπει μία κοπέλα, του αρέσει πολύ και θέλει να την παντρευτεί. Ταυτοχρόνως η κοπέλα βλέπει αυτόν, της αρέσει πάρα πολύ και θέλει να τον παντρευτεί. Ποιος είναι τώρα ο μισθός αυτού, όταν παντρευτούνε;
Ανδρός ο μισθός ποιος είναι, ύστερα από αυτό που είδε και ήθελε να αποκτήσει; Η γυναίκα του, η σύζυγος. Και ποιος είναι ο μισθός της συζύγου; Ο σύζυγος. Εδώ έχουμε κανένα ελατήριον κατώτερον, ερωτώ; Όχι, ασφαλώς. Βλέπετε πώς έχουν τα πράγματα;
