Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that the Holy Spirit examines each candidate and grants Baptism’s invisible seal only to those who approach with sincere faith. Baptism joins visible signs such as water, prayers, and threefold immersion to the Holy Spirit’s invisible forgiveness of personal and ancestral sin. Those who persevere in faith receive not only forgiveness but spiritual gifts, especially prophecy understood as proclaiming and interpreting God’s word for the edification of the Church.

My dear friends, we are still in the seventeenth Catechetical Lecture, in which Saint Cyril speaks about the Holy Spirit. We are at paragraph thirty-six. “But He examines your soul; He does not cast pearls before swine. If you are pretending, men will baptize you, but the Spirit will not baptize you. But if you approach in faith, men minister in what is visible, while the Holy Spirit gives what is invisible.” In the preceding paragraph, as we said last time, Saint Cyril referred to the fact

that the faithful person is sealed with the Holy Spirit when he is baptized. He says, “For He stands ready to seal your soul.” In the paragraph above he says, “The Holy Spirit is ready to seal your soul”—that is, to give you that divine seal before which the demons tremble, the seal by which a person will be recognized at the end of history, when humanity is judged. It is just as a document is recognized and considered valid when it bears a signature and a seal.

Saint Cyril says: Take heed. The Holy Spirit examines the soul, because He does not permit the pearls of faith to be cast before swine, as the Lord Himself has already said. In other words, take heed: you may want to be baptized, but if you are unworthy, if you do not believe, then beware. We say it once again: since the Holy Spirit does not consent to such a thing, He may come to punish you. If you are pretending, men will indeed baptize you outwardly. But the Holy Spirit

will not baptize you. “But the Spirit will not baptize you.” You may ask, “Can someone come forward for Baptism and yet not be baptized by the Spirit of God?” And not only that. Someone may hasten to be ordained, yet the Holy Spirit may not ordain him. He may hasten to make his confession, yet the Holy Spirit may not grant forgiveness of sins. Did I not tell you last time that it is the Holy Spirit who celebrates and brings to fulfillment all the Mysteries of the Church? This is why the Holy Spirit, the other Comforter, abides in the Church. Here, then, we see this very clearly.

You may have received the outward Baptism, yet not receive the seal. How can this happen? It is what happened at the baptism of that wretched magician, Simon the Samaritan. Saint Cyril even mentions him in the Procatechesis, right at the beginning. I will not turn back through the book now to read it to you.

Simon also went to be baptized, but he did not receive the Spirit of God. For the Holy Spirit baptizes—that is, He places the seal. Let me refer you also to the priesthood. John Chrysostom says that the Holy Spirit

does not ordain them.

You may now ask, “If the Holy Spirit does not ordain someone who comes forward to be ordained a priest, does that mean the Mysteries he celebrates are invalid?” No. For the sake of the faithful, the ordination is canonical and valid. Yet the ordination has not touched the man himself. It is a fearful thing.

Do you know what it means to be a priest—and may God preserve us from this, whether it be you or someone like me—and yet to be utterly bereft of the Holy Spirit? To have been rejected by the Holy Spirit? I do not think there is anything more tragic than this. I truly do not. We need look no further than Judas!

He received the calling. Remember what the Apostle Peter says concerning Cornelius: that the risen Christ appeared to those whom God had appointed beforehand. Do you remember the word? Those whom He had appointed beforehand. For when Christ called His disciples, He called them just as deacons, priests, and bishops are called within the Church. Of course, no ordination took place there, because God Himself was doing the calling; yet Christ handed down the Mystery of ordination, which is nothing other than the Mystery of the Church.

For if there is no Church, there is no ordination, because the Mystery of ordination takes place within the Church. And if there is no ordination, there is no Church. For what is the Church? It is the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. And by what power is this accomplished? By the power of the priesthood. Therefore, if you do not have the priesthood, there is no priesthood—and then there is no Church. This is why the Protestants have no Church. The poor people have no Church because they have no priesthood. You can see this very clearly. Yet for the sake of the faithful, God grants His gifts, the validity of the Mysteries, and so forth. The same applies to confession.

We say that the Spirit of God “may hold you loosed and forgiven.” I have explained this to you before. In Greek, the word “may hold” is written epsilon, chi, omicron, iota. It is in the optative mood, meaning, “May it be so; I pray and wish that it may be so.” What does this refer to? That God may forgive you. Thus it is not the priest who forgives; the Holy Spirit forgives. But the Holy Spirit wills that this be done through the hands of the priest. Therefore, if you conceal something and do not confess it—if you are being deceitful, not because you forgot it,

but because you are deceitful and refuse to reveal it—then the Holy Spirit does not forgive you. And not only does He withhold forgiveness; because you are mocking Him, imagining that you can obtain forgiveness from your spiritual father by deceit, the Holy Spirit—who cannot be mocked or ridiculed—comes even to punish you. This is a fearful thing, my dear friends, a fearful thing. You know, some people do the following—never do this yourselves. They go to a spiritual father and confess a sin. The spiritual father tells them, “Because of this sin, you will not receive Holy Communion at Pascha.” They find this too severe, so they go and find another spiritual father. They do not say that they have already confessed or that their spiritual father imposed a canon, a rule of prayer and penance, upon them—the canon being that they must not receive Holy Communion.

They now expect a different judgment from the second spiritual father. The judgments made in confession are often—or rather, not merely often, but always—personal. They are tailored to the individual and involve the spiritual father’s own discernment. I may judge, for example, that I can allow this person to receive Holy Communion at Pascha—

not at Pascha, let us say, but on the feast of the Holy Apostles or at the Dormition Fast in August. This lies within the spiritual father’s judgment, just as the application of the law also lies within his judgment.

This is so, of course, provided that he does not go beyond certain limits. Someone might come and tell me, “Yesterday I committed fornication, and tomorrow I want to receive Holy Communion.” That is not possible. Just as there are boundaries within the law, inside which a judge must act, so the spiritual father acts within the boundaries of the Canons. A spiritual father may judge the matter somewhat more leniently and tell you, “Go and receive Holy Communion.” But what is happening here? Tell me, what is happening? This is a fearful insult to the Mystery of Holy Confession. Through the mouth of your spiritual father—whether strict or lenient, however you wish to describe him—the Spirit of God has told you no. Why, then, do you try to obtain forgiveness by deceit, or deceitfully obtain permission to receive Holy Communion at Pascha? And how will receiving Holy Communion benefit you if you do such a thing? Must I analyze this any further? Its fearful nature is plain in itself.

This, my dear friends, is what Saint Cyril says here. Take heed: the Holy Spirit examines the soul. He does not, he says, cast pearls before swine. Therefore, take care not to pretend. “But if you approach in faith”—when you possess faith as you come forward for Baptism—“men minister in what is visible.” This is the visible aspect of the Mystery, established by the Lord Himself. No one, He says, enters the Kingdom of God except by water and the Spirit. We were speaking about this yesterday—or rather, the other day. What does “by water and the Spirit” mean? “By water” refers to the use of water. This is the first part, the visible part of the Mystery.

I do not know whether you were aware that every Mystery has both a visible and an invisible aspect. In Baptism, the visible aspect is the font, the water, the prayers, and everything performed and brought to fulfillment before our eyes. All these things—the threefold immersion and emergence, and so forth—constitute the visible part of the Mystery. The invisible part is the Holy Spirit. “He gives the things that are not seen.” He gives you forgiveness of your personal sins; He gives you forgiveness of ancestral sin; and He seals you. If, then, you are faithful, this is how these things take place.

Saint Cyril continues: “You are coming to a great examination, to a great enlistment, in a single hour; and if you lose that hour, the evil will be impossible for you to overcome.” You are coming to a great examination, to a great enlistment. If at that moment you lose this opportunity, you will never be able to conquer evil. Let us consider these words. What is this evil that you will be unable to conquer? Ancestral sin, your personal sins, and eternal death—

eternal Hell. This is the evil, the exceedingly great evil. You will be unable to overcome any of these things or accomplish anything against them, because God has conquered them—Christ, who became man—and He grants us victory over them through Himself. Therefore, if you do not approach in the proper manner, if you lose this hour, this moment, you will lose everything. Let us consider something else as well. What is this “great examination”? You might call it our great examination in life. We undergo two great examinations during our lifetime. What are these moments, these great examinations? Certainly not the examinations we took to enter secondary school, as people once did. Certainly not the examinations for entering university. Certainly not—

Certainly not the examinations we take to secure a professional position, an office job, and so on. Of course, we are tested at every moment of our lives. I myself am being tested at this very moment, and in public. In earlier times, even primary school children had to take examinations. In my mother’s day, these were public examinations. The village president was there, along with the teachers, the priest, and the village elders. And then the teacher would question those poor children, who trembled like fish, as my mother used to tell me. “We trembled like fish,” she would say. Imagine little children having to stand before the village elders and take their examinations as the teacher questioned them.

A child could either advance to the next class or remain in the same one. What I am describing took place at the beginning of the century.

But who told you that we are not tested every day of our lives? I told you that I am being tested now. I am taking a public examination—just as I did when I spoke to you yesterday, last Monday, the Sunday before last, and throughout all these years—because you are my judges. You will say, “Did he speak well or not? How did he speak?” You judged the way I spoke, what I said, how I moved my hands, how I carried myself, and, in short, how I presented the talk to you. And very often an audience is a strict judge.

Very often indeed. All these things are examinations. My dear friends, every day when we meet other people, our conduct is tested. When we go shopping, and in the countless other situations we face each day—are not all these examinations? They are all tests of character and conduct. And if someone is a public figure—may God preserve him! People watch him from every side, and that is only natural. But there are two truly great examinations. The first is Holy Baptism.

When we make the decision—of course, you will tell me that we now have infant Baptism—but when a person is baptized as an adult, when we make the supremely important decision to become Christians, the whole Church is not the only witness. As I was telling you during the question period, this is not merely an individual or family matter. It concerns the parish, the ecclesial community, and the entire Church. The whole Church is present, and the Angels are present as well. An old typikon—or Euchologion, rather—concerning the Mystery of Holy Matrimony says the following. This has just come to mind; many things come to mind unexpectedly.

Holy Matrimony used to be celebrated during the Divine Liturgy, because that is where it belongs: within the Divine Liturgy. A remnant of this is that the Mystery begins with the words, “Blessed is the Kingdom.” That is a surviving trace of the older practice. If you have noticed, we do not say, “Blessed is God,” but “Blessed is the Kingdom,” as we do in the Divine Liturgy. The bridegroom would stand before the icon of Christ, and the bride before the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. At a certain point, the wedding service would take place. You know, this form of the service is still celebrated occasionally, though permission must be obtained. There the priest says to the bridegroom, “Listen, my child, at this moment...”

“You are about to marry and establish a household. Do you know who is watching you, and before whom you are promising to become a faithful husband and head of your household? Before the whole Church”—the Church being present, let us say, at the Sunday Liturgy—“before Christ, before the Most Holy Theotokos, before the Saints, and before the Holy Angels. Have you heard?” the priest says to the bridegroom. The text is written in the language of the period of Ottoman rule. It uses phrases such as, “The Lord has received it,” and so forth—expressions belonging to that period, in the vernacular Greek of those days. It says almost the same things to the bride as well.

Holy Matrimony is celebrated before the Holy Angels, Christ, the Saints, and the Most Holy Theotokos. Yet, after all, marriage itself is not the true starting point of life. What of someone who never married, or who did not live long enough to reach marriage? What, then, is the true starting point? Baptism. Its witnesses are the whole Church, Christ, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, the Saints, and the Holy Angels. This is why he says, “You are coming to a great examination.” You are approaching a great examination. Take heed! My dear friends, why do we need to hear these things? You may tell me, “But we have already been baptized; it is all finished for us.”

Who told you that it is finished? We are only now beginning. Beginning what? You may say, “But we were infants when we were baptized.” Now we must become conscious that we exist, that we have been born anew, and that we have been enlisted into Christ’s army. Indeed. He goes on to say, “Take heed, for you are coming to a great enlistment.” We now leave the examination and turn to the enlistment. Yes, it is an enlistment, and you must prove yourself a faithful soldier. What does the Apostle Paul say to Timothy? That he must prove himself a good soldier of Jesus Christ. And he also tells him:

“No one engaged in warfare entangles himself in the affairs of this life.” Timothy remained unmarried precisely so that he would not become entangled. Notice the verb “entangle.” Which of you who is married could say that you have not become entangled in the cares of this life? You all say it and admit it: day and night there are so many matters and so many concerns. “No one,” he says, “entangles himself in the affairs of this life,” and so forth. You see, a person remains unmarried in order to serve Christ the King. Yet he is enlisted freely, not by force. There is no forced enlistment here.

It is voluntary, but a person must prove himself truly worthy, a soldier worthy of the Great King. My dear friends, everyone who is baptized is called to an enlistment, and it is called great because the One doing the enlisting is great. Christ, Christ the King, is the great Commander who enlists us out of the world and places us in His own camp. He takes us from the camp of the world and brings us into His own. He takes us from the camp of Satan and places us in His camp...

...His own radiant camp. That is why it is called a great enlistment. Let us continue. “If you are counted worthy of grace, your soul is illumined.” When you are counted worthy of the grace you receive through Baptism, your soul is illumined. “You receive a power that you did not possess before. You receive weapons that strike terror into the demons.” Let me comment briefly on this. You take up weapons that are terrifying to the demons, weapons that make them tremble. And what are these weapons, my dear friends?

What are these weapons? First, there is the seal of the Holy Spirit. Then there is the seal of the Precious Cross. Then there is the seal of the Holy Trinity, for we are baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity. All these, as seals and weapons, strike terror into the devil. “And if you do not cast away your weapons, but keep the seal upon your soul, no demon will approach you.” So, if you do not cast away the weapons—how can someone cast them away? As I was telling you...

...on a previous occasion, these seals cannot be erased. Baptism is indelible, and so forth. How, then, can I cast away these weapons, these seals? By denying the faith. Here, casting them away means nothing other than rendering them inactive. I still possess the seal, but it is locked inside a drawer and cannot be used to seal documents. In other words, it has been made useless; the seal is no longer active. If you ask how else a person can cast away these weapons, I would answer: through sin. Commit a sin, and the seal—or the weapons—has been cast aside.

God’s protection over the faithful is invincible. The protection of God is an irresistible weapon. But when you sin, God withdraws His protection, and then the demons rush upon you. Let me give you a very striking example. Although this happened in the fifteenth century before Christ, I wonder whether it might find a fulfilment even in our own time. Listen. God’s people, the Hebrews, while Moses was still alive, were encamped east of the Jordan River on a plain. They were almost ready to enter the land of Canaan. But in that region, particularly in the hill country...

...a people called the Moabites had already settled. The Moabites were descended from Lot, but I will say no more about that because time is passing. They were idolaters. When they saw such a vast multitude approaching, they became terribly afraid, thinking that if the Hebrews passed through their land, they would seize it. Their king then summoned Balaam, the sorcerer from Mesopotamia, to curse them so that harm would come upon them and they would not enter the land of the Moabites.

The king of the Moabites was Balak. He summoned Balaam. The whole story is found in the Book of Numbers, and you can read it there. It is a beautiful and very edifying account. Balaam told King Balak that God had blessed these people and that there was nothing they could do against them. Balaam also uttered those renowned Christological prophecies. But secretly he said to Balak, “Do you want to defeat them? Listen, listen, listen! Do you want to defeat them? I will tell you how.” There was one way.

That man did not escape the Hebrews; they slaughtered him. Another book tells us this, though it is not mentioned at that particular point in the account. What happened? God is angered with His people when they sin. So Balaam’s counsel was: make them sin. Then you will see that God will abandon them, and once He has abandoned them, you will defeat them. It was demonic counsel. And that is exactly what happened, my dear friends. Sadly, that is exactly what happened. I will not tell you more of the story, but only offer a contemporary application of it.

Balaam.

The name Balaam, translated into Greek, is Nicholas. And Nicholas means either “the victory of the people” or “the one who conquered the people.” This name is used in the Apocalypse. There God—Christ Himself—speaks to two or three of the seven Churches of Asia Minor about the Nicolaitans, that is, the Balaamites. The Nicolaitans were a Gnostic heresy. Just as Balaam caused God’s people to fall into sexual immorality, so Christ says the same of them. And this immorality had a twofold meaning.

And they did in fact commit fornication with the Moabite women, but there was something else as well. Because they sacrificed to Baal of Peor, the god of the Moabites, they also committed spiritual fornication. That is, they abandoned the true God and sacrificed to demons. That is why God says this and that about them there. I am saying many things here. You know, I told you that the Nicolaitans were Gnostics. Gnosticism, then, is something God does not want. “I hate the works of the Nicolaitans,” Christ says there. And you know that we have Gnostics in Larissa, with their Gnostic center—and, of course, throughout Greece. So here is a question: Who might those wicked people be who, at Satan’s prompting...

...could induce us Greeks, us Orthodox Christians, to provoke the Lord with grievous sins, through idolatry and every other evil, so that God might destroy us? Of course, those who scheme to bring about our destruction—and you all know who they are—will receive the same reward as Balaam of old. He enjoyed nothing, nor did he return to his homeland, although Balak had paid him a great deal of money. He enjoyed none of it. He died; he was killed there by the Hebrews, in that region. This is how a person can cast away his weapons, my dear friends, and then Satan rushes in and God withdraws His protection.

Then many legions of demons may rush into the soul—and may God preserve us, may He preserve us! Likewise, joining a heresy is also a casting away of the weapons. To cast away the weapons means to cast them away either in one’s moral life or in matters of doctrine. In other words, either my way of life is such that I drive away the Spirit of God, or I live in heresy, which likewise drives away the Spirit of God. “But if you keep the seal upon your soul, no demon approaches, for he cowers in fear.” The demons are afraid; they cannot draw near to you. John Chrysostom says, “No one can harm you, not even the demons...

...unless you harm yourself.” And when you begin to harm yourself, then of course the demons will come as your “fellow workers,” in very heavy quotation marks, to destroy your whole being, both body and soul. “And if the demons are cast out by the Spirit of God...” Since demons are driven out by the Spirit of God, it follows that when the Spirit of God departs—or remains inactive—the demons invade. Paragraph thirty-seven. “If you believe, you receive not only forgiveness of sins...

...but you also do things beyond human power.” Indeed, through Baptism we have forgiveness of sins. Is that not of fundamental importance? The forgiveness of sins. Yesterday, or last Sunday—I do not remember—we were saying that the Apostle Peter tells us that through His Crucifixion Christ grants forgiveness of sins, because this is the foundation. Once the foundation is laid, everything else follows: the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit. So, he says here, you receive not only the forgiveness of your sins, but “you also do things beyond human power.” You are given the ability to do things that surpass human strength. “You may also be counted worthy of the gift of prophecy.” He wants you to become worthy of the prophetic gift as well.

For within the Church, the prophetic gift held the highest place. As the Apostle Paul says, it is not speaking in tongues but the prophetic gift that matters most, because—and I shall explain what the prophetic gift is—the Apostle Paul says that prophecy builds up the Church. What, then, is the prophetic gift? It has two aspects, or two branches, if you prefer. The first is to foretell things that will happen in the future. That was limited. The second is the ability to speak and to interpret the word of God.

For in the New Testament, those who spoke were called prophets. Indeed, we find prophets there—that is, speakers, what we would call preachers—who traveled through the countryside, going from village to village and from city to city, precisely in order to preach. So when he says here, “I pray that you may receive the prophetic gift,” he means chiefly the ability to speak, because it is this that builds up the Church. Of course, there are distinctions within this gift. It is not simply the ability to speak. One person is given a word of wisdom, another a word of understanding, and so forth.

Discernment, and the other gifts. What are all these things? They are the ability to understand the Scriptures and explain them to others. This is a gift. And the Apostle Paul says—I shall quote it to you—“Do not seek speaking in tongues.” The Protestants, and especially those known as Pentecostals, regard speaking in tongues as the supreme gift of the Holy Spirit. Poor people! And what comes of it? Moreover, is it really speaking in tongues? Who understands those inarticulate sounds they utter, and who is edified by them? Suppose I were now to speak to you in some foreign language. Oh, nothing could be easier! Nothing could be easier! I could summon up some gibberish of my own...

...and leave you standing before me in amazement. Would I actually be speaking a foreign language? What did you understand from the gibberish I spoke? And who was edified? Did I interpret the word of God through those meaningless sounds? The tongues that existed then were understood. You see, in the case of Cornelius, they spoke foreign languages and glorified God, so that anyone present who did not know Greek, Hebrew, or perhaps Latin—whatever language he knew—could hear this glorification of God. Those were foreign languages that had meaning for the people present. Let me take this opportunity to say: please be careful. Be careful not to be led astray. Be careful. But which gift truly matters? The Apostle Paul says, “I want you all to prophesy.”

To prophesy means to have the ability to proclaim the word of God. According to the Apostle Paul, this is the highest gift, because it builds up. Do you understand why it builds up? It builds up the Church. So I take Paul’s words and address them to you: I want—not I, but the Apostle Paul says it—I want you all to prophesy. How will you attain this? Whatever else you may tell me, this is the answer: the Spirit of God will see you laboring and will give you the gift. Listen carefully: when He sees you laboring. No one gives anything to the lazy, not even the Spirit of God. Let me ask you: Where did Christ find His first disciples, who were fishermen? The two pairs, the two pairs...

Peter and Andrew, James and John—where did He find them? He found them fishing; He found them at work. He simply changed the object of their labor. He told them, “I will make you fishers of men.” He found them at work. Would you like another example? The disciples spent three years learning at Christ’s feet before Pentecost came. Does someone want and desire to receive this gift? Then he must settle down to study diligently. I emphasize: diligently. For the prophet says, “Cursed is he who does the works of the Lord carelessly.” When you undertake the work of the Lord...

...the Wisdom of Sirach says, “Prepare your word, and then you will be heard.” First you must prepare yourself, and only then speak, for that is how you will be heard. If this applies even to everyday matters, how much more does it apply to the word of God? So I would say to you: take care; help both yourselves and your children. At this very moment, our Church needs the prophetic gift—the ability for the word of God to be heard. And I shall continue.

“For you receive as much grace as you have room for, and not merely as much as I possess; for it is possible for me to speak only a little, while you may receive much more.” This is what I told you earlier. It depends on you. How much grace do you receive? As much as you have room for—as much as your capacity allows. Do you have a great capacity? Does the Spirit of God see you struggling and striving? He will give you much. Does He not see this in you? Then you will not receive. I, he says...

Uh...

...speak these words to you and so forth, but whether you receive much depends upon you and upon your own labor. “For faith is a vast field of spiritual commerce.” Do you know what “commerce” means here? “Faith is a vast field of commerce.” Faith is like a great marketplace of spiritual goods. Do you know what commerce means?

You engage in trade, and one who does so is a merchant. It concerns merchandise. So faith, he says, is like an immense marketplace of spiritual goods. Do not forget that the Lord spoke in parables about faith using images drawn from commerce. Do not forget this. I remind you that the Lord speaks of bankers and of a steward, and He says that the sons of this age are more prudent, more shrewd in commercial affairs and investments, than the sons of the Kingdom, and so forth. That is why Saint Cyril says here, so beautifully and aptly, that faith is a field of commerce, and a vast one at that—a great marketplace where you can find whatever you seek.

What do you want? Which gift do you eagerly desire? Does not the Apostle Paul say, “Earnestly desire the greater gifts”? And does he not then point to the greatest gift, which is love? Do you hear the verb he uses? “Earnestly desire,” he says, “the greater gifts.” For there are many gifts. Why? Because faith is a vast marketplace. It is a supermarket, if I may use a modern expression. You enter and find what you want. Such is faith. Therefore, “the Comforter always remains as your guardian, caring for you all the more as His own soldier, watching over your entrances and your exits and guarding you against those who plot against you...

...granting you every kind of spiritual gift, provided that you do not grieve Him through sin.” The Spirit of God comes, he says, and stands guard over you, because you have become His soldier. Now, in ordinary life, whom does a soldier guard? The soldier guards the king. Certainly. But can you imagine the king guarding the soldier? These are the wondrous paradoxes of our faith. Become a soldier of Christ, and Christ will become your guardian. Become a soldier of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit will become your guardian, because you belong to Him and He watches over you.

He is concerned for you and takes care of you because you belong to Him. When the Apostle Paul says, “No one engaged in military service becomes entangled in the affairs of this life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him,” then the one who enlisted you will care for you, since you belong to him. He will give you the proper and fitting ration—your mess tin and your daily food, to put it simply. He will feed you and care for you. He will also watch over “your entrances and your exits,” as the 120th Psalm says. He will guard you when you enter and when you go out. Since it mentions entering first—even though we leave our house and then return to it—has the order been reversed here? No, it has not. It means your entrance into life and your departure from life. In other words, He will guard you throughout your entire life.

He will guard you from those who think of you with hostility, “those who plot against you,” and He will grant you an abundance of spiritual gifts, on one condition: that you do not grieve the Holy Spirit through sin. For it is written, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” “What, then, my beloved, does it mean to preserve grace? Make yourselves ready to receive grace, and once you have received it, do not cast it away.” Do not grieve the Holy Spirit. How is He grieved? When we sin. Then the Holy Spirit departs. When does He not depart? When the soul is at peace—that is, when it does not sin. When we do not sin, we have peace.

When we sin, there is warfare within us, and the Holy Spirit departs—He flees. And, the Apostle says, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit “for the day of redemption.” What does “for the day of redemption” mean? The Apostle is looking ahead to that day. The seal will prove that you belong to Christ when He comes to take those who are His. He will recognize that the document is authentic, that His image bears the seal of the Holy Spirit. For even His images will go to Hell—the ungodly are images of Christ, yet they will go to Hell. How beautiful this is! “What then, beloved, must we do to preserve grace?” We must make ourselves ready: first, to receive grace, and second...

...once we have received it, not to cast it away. I will say it again. There are two things: first, to receive the grace of God, the grace of the Holy Spirit; and then, once we have received it, to take care not to cast it away. We now come to paragraph thirty-eight, the final paragraph of the entire Seventeenth Catechetical Lecture: “May the God of all, who spoke through the prophets in the Holy Spirit, and who sent Him upon the Apostles here on the day of Pentecost, now send Him upon us also; and through Him may He preserve us, granting to all of us together...”

“...this blessing, that we may always bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control.” This is the conclusion, as you can see. He comes to the end and says: May this same God, who spoke through the prophets in the Holy Spirit, and who sent His Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the day of Pentecost... Saint Cyril never misses an opportunity, with a certain local pride, to emphasize Jerusalem, the Holy City of which he was bishop. And so he says, “on the day of Pentecost, here...”

This is a cause for pride, but it is not merely that. To begin with, yes, it is a cause for pride. The Apostle Paul, for example, took pride in having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia. Tarsus, together with Athens and Alexandria, was a university city. The Apostle Paul takes pride in this and says that he was born and raised in “no insignificant city.” Why should someone not take pride in his homeland? Is that a sin? Is it wrong? But pay attention: there is something more here. Saint Cyril wants to say that the faith is founded upon events. I have told you this before.

When we speak of Pentecost, we are not speaking about theoretical ideas. The descent of the Holy Spirit took place in this very city. Saint Cyril wants to speak about the events themselves, because Christianity is founded on real events. And what does he say? May the Father, who sent His Holy Spirit to the prophets and the Apostles, send Him now upon you as well. Notice the words, “May He send Him.” May He send Him upon you and preserve you—may He keep you pure and worthy, so that you may retain the Spirit of God and bear fruit. The Holy Spirit brings forth the fruit, but we must prove worthy of that fruitfulness.

“Always bearing the fruits of the Holy Spirit.” I have spoken to you before, my beloved, about spiritual gifts. How do these gifts work? The gifts come from God, and when they find suitable ground in human beings, they are reflected and bear fruit. So when we speak of the fruits of the Holy Spirit, we mean that He brings us the gift of the virtues, and we in turn bear the fruit. The gift itself becomes fruit. This passage, of course, is taken from the Apostle Paul, from the fifth chapter of his Epistle to the Galatians. He presents three groups of three as the fruit, and these are also the touchstone of whether you possess the Spirit of God. Let us name them. First, love: do you have love? Then joy...

Spiritual joy. Do you have joy? If you have joy, you do not go to the psychiatrist. Then peace—the deep peace that preserves the presence of the Holy Spirit in the soul. Then patient endurance. Do not make yourself the judge and prosecutor of others. Let it go; it does not matter. In other words, postpone your anger and restrain your wrath. Let it be. Then kindness. To be kind meant to be useful and beneficial, not “a burden upon the earth,” as the ancients used to say—not useless. You have heard people say, “You useless man!” No. We should be useful people, people who benefit others. Then goodness: be a good person, upright and sincere.

Let what you are inwardly be seen outwardly as well.

Faith is a vast subject. Then there is gentleness—that is, meekness, being a meek person. And there is self-control: knowing how to be the rider, while everything that belongs to you, including your mouth, is the horse. In other words, you must hold the reins and have mastery over yourself, so that nothing overcomes you. These truly make up the fruit of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle uses the singular, “fruit,” to include all these fruits of the Holy Spirit; he does not say “fruits.” My beloved, through these two Catechetical Lectures, which have taken us two years...

...the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Catechetical Lectures, Saint Cyril has given us such a rich picture. He has enabled us to draw somewhat nearer to and almost touch the good Holy Spirit, the third person of the Holy Trinity, to whom we owe so very much. Thus we may come to appreciate and honor Him, and live as He desires, so that in this way we may receive more and more gifts—both for our own benefit, such as love, and for the benefit of the Church, such as prophecy. And Saint Cyril concludes as follows: “In Christ Jesus our Lord, through whom and with whom, together with the Holy Spirit...”

“...glory be to the Father, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.” This, my beloved, is how Saint Cyril concludes. And this is how we too conclude our year. I truly pray that the Holy Spirit may place His indelible seal upon us and keep it there. I wish you a blessed Pascha and a good summer. May the Lord bless you.

...το δικό του, το φωτεινό. Γι' αυτό λέγεται μεγάλη στρατολογία. Προχωρώ. «Ἐὰν καταξιωθῇς τῆς χάριτος, φωτίζεται σου ἡ ψυχή». Όταν καταξιωθείς από τη χάρη που θα πάρεις από το βάπτισμα, τότε η ψυχή σου φωτίζεται. «Λαμβάνεις δύναμιν ἣν οὐκ εἶχες», την οποία δεν είχες. «Λαμβάνεις ὅπλα φρικτὰ τοῖς δαίμοσιν». Να το σχολιάσω λίγο αυτό. Παίρνεις, αναλαμβάνεις όπλα τα οποία είναι φρικτά στους δαίμονες, όπλα που προκαλούν τη φρίκη στους δαίμονες. Και τα όπλα αυτά, αγαπητοί μου, τι είναι;

Εεε...

τα λέγω έτσι με λόγια και τα λοιπά, αλλά από σένα εξαρτάται να πάρεις το πολύ, όταν εσύ εργαστείς. «Επειδή πραγματεία πλατεία η πίστις». Ξέρετε τι θα πει πραγματεία; «Πραγματεία πλατεία η πίστις». Επειδή η πίστη είναι πλατύ εμπόρευμα. Ξέρετε τι θα πει πραγματεία;
