Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem describes the Holy Spirit as a personal divine hypostasis who sanctifies the faithful and actively works within the Church. Saint Cyril expects catechumens to combine formal catechesis with frequent personal and communal study of Scripture, since hearing instruction without private study cannot produce mature knowledge. Using Simon Magus as a warning, Saint Cyril insists that candidates approach baptism sincerely, while distinguishing the apostolic ministry of preaching from the practical administration of baptism.

We are still in Saint Cyril’s seventeenth Catechetical Lecture on the Holy Spirit, and we have now reached paragraph thirty-four—lambda delta, the thirty-fourth paragraph. He says: “From all these things, together with the many more that have been omitted, you who understand may discern the personal, sanctifying, and active power of the Holy Spirit.” Since we are approaching the end of this lecture, which is the second and final one concerning the Holy Spirit, Saint Cyril now says that everything we have discussed, together with everything we have omitted, reveals to those who understand the Spirit of God: His personal, sanctifying, and active power. These are the three things that the holy Father has already explained in these two lectures through many examples from Holy Scripture. First, the Holy Spirit is a person. That is what “personal” means here: He is a hypostasis, a person, and not merely a power of God.
The Holy Spirit is sanctifying; that is, He sanctifies the faithful and the Church. This is why the Lord said that the Holy Spirit would remain. The Lord Himself, the first Paraclete, would depart, and the second Paraclete would come—that is, the Holy Spirit, who would remain in the Church precisely in order to sanctify the Church. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is sanctifying. He sanctifies. And the third point is this:
He is active—that is, He acts and works. Saint Cyril has told us all these things, and we have given you many examples. He continues: “For time would fail me if I were to recount them.” These words are taken from the Epistle to the Hebrews: the time available to me...
would not be enough to tell them all. “Or if I wished to speak of what remains to be said concerning the Holy Spirit.” The Second Coming, the Resurrection, sanctification, the Annunciation, the Apocalypse, the Resurrection, the Resurrection, the Resurrection—to speak of all those things I have not yet mentioned concerning the Holy Spirit, drawn from Paul’s fourteen epistles, in which blessed Paul taught variously, continually, and reverently. Allow me to make one very brief comment on the word “variously.”
“Reverently.” Of course, the Apostle Paul teaches the faith, and within the subject of faith is also the Holy Spirit. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity is there as well; everything is contained within that one word, “faith.” When the Apostle Paul deals with the great subject of faith in his epistles, he unquestionably does so in many different ways. This word “variously” is very significant, because it reveals not merely something Paul does, but something the Holy Spirit does throughout Holy Scripture.
I have told you before that Holy Scripture never exhausts a subject in the way a scholar might exhaust it in a monograph. No subject is ever treated exhaustively in Holy Scripture. There are practical, pastoral reasons for this. A monograph exhausts a subject. Someone may write, for example, on the subject of the microphone: how many kinds of microphones there are, how a microphone works—and thus exhaust the subject of the microphone. The Word of God does something different. Throughout the seventy-six books of Holy Scripture, He is always setting down one aspect here and another there.
Does the microphone have this particular property? Nothing is said. Are there so many different kinds of microphones? Nothing. There are condenser microphones, resistance microphones, microphones with carbon granules, and so forth, as the old microphones had. What am I trying to say? Whatever the Holy Spirit does, the Apostle Paul does as well. And what is that? He returns to the same subject in every possible way. If someone wishes to see that subject from every side—to see it comprehensively, as we say—he need only turn to the whole of Holy Scripture, gather all the relevant elements, and present the subject in its fullness. But why does...
God arrange things this way, with these individual truths, as we might call them, scattered throughout Scripture? As I told you, there is a pastoral reason. He tells you something and then tells it to you again at another time. After reading one book of Holy Scripture, you read a second and encounter the same subject from another side. Thus Scripture continually speaks about the same subject in various ways, to use Saint Cyril’s word. I do this as well. It is an ecclesial method. In preaching, by contrast, there is what homiletics calls a formal discourse...
We might speak of three kinds of presentation: the formal discourse, what is called the higher homily, and what is called the lower homily. A formal discourse takes one subject—just one—and exhausts it. There were indeed Fathers of our Church who used this form. In certain cases, such as John Chrysostom’s work On Virginity, the form is borrowed from secular rhetoric; that is, it does not arise directly from Holy Scripture. The higher homily takes two or three subjects—four at most—and develops them.
The lower homily takes up all the points in the text. If we wished to illustrate these forms in a tangible way, we might say this: one table has only bread on it—nothing else, just bread. Another table has bread, a main dish, and salad. The third table has everything imaginable: bread and the main dish, salad, dessert, radishes, a little sardine, a savory morsel—everything is laid out on the table. Which table would you prefer? Surely the third. Well then, my dear friends, that is what is called the lower homily. That is what we are doing here.
We speak about... many things. When you leave, someone may ask you, “What did Father Athanasios speak to you about?” Of course, we have a framework and maintain a central theme, but in reality we cover many subjects. This is not a matter of poor education, carelessness, or ignorance. It is an ecclesial method. Why? I will tell you immediately. My dear friends, what can I say? Suppose I speak for an hour. During that hour, many beautiful, theological, and important things may be said, and then I may mention some small peripheral point...
some little incidental or marginal detail, perhaps a short story or something of that sort. It may happen that none of the other things remains in the memory, but this one detail does. And this detail, like a little hook, may catch hold of a guilty burden in the soul. You know that when someone casts a net, he later draws it in and gathers the fish. So on Sunday the net of the Word of God is cast, and on Monday I sort the fish down at Saint Stylianos. What do I mean? Someone says, “In your homily you mentioned such-and-such, and I remembered a sin I committed when I was a boy—or when I was a girl.” Another person tells me, “You said something else in your homily, and I remembered.” What is happening here? This is precisely what the Spirit of God seeks to accomplish.
He awakens you, so that you too may remember, begin to cleanse yourself, and go and confess this or that. That is what has value. Take note: we are not inventing anything new. This is the ecclesial method. The Fathers proceeded in this way. That is why later theologians who tried to classify the homilies of John Chrysostom encountered great difficulty: under what subject were they to classify a given homily? It was certainly based on a particular theme, but it also included many other matters. Thus the heading of a homily does not usually say simply, “On such-and-such,” except in a few cases. Instead it says, “Also concerning this, and that, and the other.” In his own time, moreover, John Chrysostom faced the great problem of oath-taking.
People would swear oaths over the slightest thing. You may ask, “And what do they do today?” The holy Father took the matter very seriously. He could not tolerate Christians swearing oaths. So you find a series of homilies whose conclusions return to the subject of oath-taking, and another series that returns to almsgiving, and so forth. Those of you who have read John Chrysostom will have noticed this. Therefore, when Saint Cyril says that Paul speaks of the Holy Spirit “in the fourteen epistles, in which he teaches variously,” this is the variety he means. And you know, it possesses not only grace but also freshness and spiritual benefit. Now let me speak about the word “continually.” That word tells us many things.
Holy Scripture continually returns to what it wishes to teach. It emphasizes it, then emphasizes it again and again. Parents do this with their children as well. But if you say the very same thing to your children every time, they will soon begin to resist. You tell them, “Now, when you go out, be careful about that,” and then you say exactly the same thing tomorrow and the day after. We overlook the word “variously.” If we spoke continually but also variously—if we still said, “Be careful,” but expressed it in another way, listen, in another way—then our children would not grow weary or react against us. This requires skill, the skill possessed by the Apostle Paul and now presented to us by Saint Cyril.
And then there is the other word: “reverently.” My dear friends, we must show reverence when we use sacred terms and sacred words. We cannot speak flippantly about sacred things. Once, twenty-five years ago—and I will never forget it, never...
Someone—we were in the old Church of Saint Achillios, inside the confessional—had a question, just as you also have questions. He wanted to ask me about the covering we use over the sacred vessels, which is called...
the Aer. It is the covering the priest places over his shoulders during the Great Entrance. Before that, the Precious Gifts have been covered with it; then, when the priest comes to the Holy Doors, he sets down the sacred vessels containing the gifts—which are not yet the Body and Blood of Christ—and we cover them. This man wanted to ask what purpose the covering served and how it was placed. “That cloth,” he said, “that you wave around like this.” Why have I never forgotten it? It sounded so irreverent and so dreadful to me that I felt disgusted when I heard it. There are people who ask questions irreverently. A person may raise as a question even the gravest and most serious matter...
What might that be? Suppose the thought comes to him that God does not exist. This may genuinely be his question: “How can I be thinking this? How could such a thing possibly be true?” It is, as I say, the gravest possible matter. But state it reverently. What does “reverently” mean? The Greek word suggests receiving something well, holding it delicately with the very tips of the fingers. That is how we take hold of something precious, perhaps a printed page or a photograph. We do not handle it roughly. Earlier today, for example, I gave someone a small icon, and he folded it. We said to him, “Why are you folding the icon? An icon is not to be folded.” Yet he folded it.
This means that he did not take the icon delicately between his fingertips—that is, reverently. In the same way, we must take sacred things upon our lips and into our mouths: the name of God, of Christ, of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), and of the Saints. We must speak of them only in a sacred and reverent manner, and so forth. You have now seen the three beautiful principles Saint Cyril gives here. In Paul’s epistles, he says, the Apostle taught us about the Holy Spirit “variously, continually, and reverently.” How important this is! Those who carry out a work of teaching—educators, schoolteachers, professors, and parents—should take hold of this threefold principle. I repeat: variously...
Continually and reverently. Teachers often complain that the children do not pay attention in class—although children today are so unruly that only God can help us; what can I say? Even that is putting it mildly. They complain that the children make fun of them and do all sorts of things. But perhaps the teacher needs to reconsider his approach. Should he not teach in this way, making the lesson beautiful, varied, and attractive? But I have spent too long on this. Let us continue. I meant to make only a few comments, but I have gone on at length.
“May our listeners forgive us. As for what remains unsaid, the God of those who are diligent will bring you to a fuller knowledge, as you learn these things through more frequent reading of Holy Scripture. And through these present catechetical lectures, as well as what was said before, may you hold more firmly the faith in one God, the Father Almighty,” and so forth. He wanted this to be the work of the power of the Holy Spirit. As for what we left unsaid because of the lack of time—no, not what you left unsaid; forgive me, he says “us.” And as for you, the listeners...
What was omitted should be filled out through a fuller knowledge gained by more frequent study, and so forth. Here again we find several points that I would like us to notice, because they are useful. First, Saint Cyril gives us a little key for understanding how these catechetical lectures were conducted. How did they take place? Do you imagine that these catechumens simply sat down in their seats and Saint Cyril began teaching them? Consider the final lecture, the seventeenth. Does it not assume that the catechumens already knew Holy Scripture? Were they ignorant of Holy Scripture? With so many abundant references to...
Holy Scripture, both the Old Testament and the New Testament, could the catechumens possibly have had no knowledge of it? Who, then, would have understood Saint Cyril? This assumes that gatherings were already being held for the study of Holy Scripture. That is what he means when he says, “as you learn these things through more frequent reading of the divine Scriptures.” What they needed to know had to come from the study of Holy Scripture...
and that study had to be frequent.
Thank you. This study may be done privately or collectively, in what we today call a Bible-study group. But let me say something to those of you who attend or lead such groups. Leaders, do not imagine that those who hear the Word of God in the group will make progress if they do not study Holy Scripture at home. And those of you who take part in such groups, including this gathering, must not imagine that you will make progress if you are content merely to hear what we say here. We must study at home. Here is a very simple example: a pupil who only listens to the teacher at school will never learn, however intelligent he may be...
unless he studies at home. Do we need any stronger proof than that? So I beg you: you know what we do here. As at school, we provide starting points—opportunities and encouragement for study. That is why we must study at home. Saint Cyril speaks here of frequent, or more frequent, study of Holy Scripture. Then he says, “and through these present catechetical lectures.” That is the second element: these catechetical lectures, the ones we are holding now, as Saint Cyril says. Therefore, the study of the divine Scriptures is something that takes place apart from the catechetical lectures. And he adds a third element: “and through what was said to you before, may you hold the faith more firmly.”
“What was said before”—when was it said? Before these catechetical lectures, which now have a formal character and constitute, we might say, the final stage. Saint Cyril’s catechesis was not the first stage; it was the final stage of instruction. It had therefore been preceded by private catecheses. These were probably less formally organized than Saint Cyril’s lectures here, consisting rather of informal talks on Holy Scripture. That is the first point. Do you know how long the catechesis of a catechumen often lasted? One year, two years, or three years, depending on whether the catechumen had learned what was required and demonstrated a proper manner of life. First came the study...
and then the catechetical lectures. Would you like another indication? What does Saint Cyril say here? There is not enough time. Pascha was approaching, and the Baptism had to take place. He finishes with the next lecture, the eighteenth, which, God willing, we shall study next year. It concerns the Church and the resurrection of the dead. Take note: if God grants that we are well and together here next year, we shall hear what Saint Cyril has to tell us about the resurrection of the dead and the Church. Then, after the Baptism of the catechumens—more precisely, of those preparing for illumination—he delivers five further catechetical lectures, known as the mystagogical catecheses.
These catecheses complete the knowledge of the catechumens, who have now been baptized, by teaching them about the Mysteries of the Church. You see, then, how continual and intense the Church’s care was, so that those preparing to become Christians might learn the content of their faith. And here he says...
“Through what was said to you before, may you hold the faith more firmly.” Faith in what? “In one God, the Father Almighty; and in our Lord Jesus Christ, His Only-begotten Son; and in the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.” He continues: “The word and title ‘Spirit’ is used in the divine Scriptures in a general sense. It is said of the Father, ‘God is Spirit,’” and so forth. In other words, what have we learned concerning the Holy Triune God? You see here the first doctrine concerning the Holy Triune God. I rejoice when I hear many of you, in your conversations with one another or when speaking to me, say, “the Holy Triune God.” You do not merely say, “God.” Not that it is sinful to say “God” or “Christ.” It is not sinful at all. But this emphasis has its place. It shows that the words “the Holy Triune God” have already entered deeply into our very being, into our very cells; and, to tell you the truth, this gives me great joy.
Very great joy. I say to myself that these lessons are doing something, that something is taking root and having an effect. Here Saint Cyril speaks about the word “Spirit.” Rather than translate and read the whole passage to you and delay us further, I shall put it in my own words. The Father is called Spirit, as the Lord said in the Gospel according to John: “God is Spirit.” The Holy Spirit is called Spirit, and the Son is also called Spirit. This last expression is taken from Lamentations 4:20, which says concerning the person of Christ, the Son: “The Spirit of our countenance is Christ the Lord.” For God is Spirit, and so forth. And of course, all this is said...
to refute the heresy of Sabellius: “and they drive away the error of Sabellius. Let us return to the matter that now presses upon us and is profitable for us.” What did Sabellius teach? He taught the dreadful heresy that the Father appeared in history as the Son and afterward appeared in the Church as the Holy Spirit, as though there were only one person. That is why these matters are emphasized. But, my beloved, having said and recalled these things, we must now return to our main subject. And so we proceed to the thirty-fifth paragraph: “Take care that you do not approach those who baptize as Simon did, pretending...
while your heart does not seek the truth. It is our part to warn you, and yours to make yourself secure.” “Take care” is in the singular. We too often address an audience in the singular. We say, “Be careful,” though strictly speaking we should say, “All of you, be careful.” The singular addresses each person individually. Take care that you do not approach those who baptize as Simon Magus did. If you remember from Acts, Philip the deacon had gone there and was baptizing. Simon also asked to be baptized, but unfortunately he was pretending, because in reality he wanted to achieve wicked ends. What were they? He wanted to keep practicing magic and to increase his magical power by means of these new things that Philip had brought. Philip was now preaching and performing signs and wonders among the people, and Simon wanted to perform signs and wonders as well. Here again, my beloved, you see the case we discussed during the questions: Simon Magus did what magicians do today, mixing religious things with demonic things.
We said that magicians who practice a form of magic that mixes demonic and spiritual things have Simon Magus himself as their patron. It is a dreadful thing. You may remember, when we examined this subject, the extremely severe language with which the Apostle Peter addressed this man and what he said to him: “May your money perish with you.” For Simon had offered money to the Apostle Peter. “May your money perish with you. I see that you are filled with poison,” and so forth.
And so Saint Cyril says here: take care that you do not approach those who baptize as Simon Magus did, pretending while his heart did not seek the truth.
If you remember, Saint Cyril treats the same subject at length in his Procatechesis, again referring to Simon Magus. Take care, he says, that you do not pretend, because hypocrisy, my beloved, is a very serious matter. God is not mocked. You may receive Baptism and yet, for some reason, mock God because inwardly you do not believe. “God is not mocked.” The Greek verb for “mock” is connected with the nostrils. In those days, making a gesture with the nostrils was a way of ridiculing someone.
They would hold their nostrils and snort. Among the Jews, this was a gesture of derision. Thus the verb means “to mock.” Take care: God cannot be mocked. Woe to you if you try. This is said not because God can suffer any harm, but out of fear that the person who pretends will bring harm upon himself. Notice the words here: “approaching those who baptize while pretending.” Did Saint Cyril himself baptize? No. Did the Apostle Paul baptize? No. Indeed, next Sunday we shall see that when the Apostle Peter was in the house of Cornelius, he ordered that they be baptized.
Naturally, he did not give this order to himself. This means that the Apostle Peter did not perform the Baptism. Who did? Most likely one or more of the six Christians from Joppa who accompanied him to Caesarea. What does the Apostle Paul say? He says, “Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the Gospel.” Something had happened in Corinth: those endless quarrels we are prone to, especially we Greeks, dividing ourselves into factions and truly tearing one another apart. Some said, “I belong to Peter,” others, “I belong to Paul,” others, “I belong to Apollos,” and still others, “I belong to the Lord.” And the Apostle Paul tells them, “I give thanks...
that I baptized none of you, lest you should say that I baptized in order to make followers for myself.” And he says, “The Lord did not send me to baptize.” Then, while writing this, he remembered that he had also baptized the household of Stephanas—that is, he had baptized one family. Who knows, perhaps only half of them; take it as you will, and so forth. Then, at another point, he remembers something else and finally says, “I do not know that I baptized anyone else.” We say this not because Baptism was somehow inferior—God forbid. There are no higher and lower ministries or Mysteries within the Church, God forbid. Why, then, does the Apostle Paul say this?
Why does the Apostle Paul say this? Those of you who read Holy Scripture have surely come across this passage. Here too Saint Cyril says, “those who baptize.” He says this simply because Baptism involves a set form, and because this form is repeated, it is not difficult to carry out. Preaching, however, is difficult. Not everyone can preach. This is why the Apostle Paul said, “Christ did not send me to baptize”—that is, to do something others could perform. He did not mean that Baptism was inferior, but that it follows a form which is repeated. We put water in the baptismal font and say the prescribed words; what is to be said has already been appointed.
That presents no difficulty, whereas preaching does, because you cannot deliver the same sermon throughout your whole life. Each time you must change it, again and again, and that requires study and labor—great labor of mind, as I said earlier. So yes, beloved, it requires intense attention. That is what he means. Not everyone can do it. This is why there are others who perform the baptisms. On this occasion, I would also like to say that sometimes someone may ask me, “Read the exorcisms over me,” and I reply, “Go to your parish and ask the priest to read the exorcisms over you.” For, my beloved, if I must occupy myself with a multitude of things that other fellow priests can do, then what will I do? This is entirely natural. So if at times I refer you elsewhere and say, “I cannot receive you; I cannot do this,”
do not misunderstand me. You can see this principle laid down in the Word of God itself. Saint Cyril then continues: “It is our part to testify solemnly”—that is, to speak. Do you remember yesterday, in our interpretation of Acts, the expression “I solemnly testify”? It means that I proclaim with great force what I have to say from the Gospel, calling God and men as witnesses. It is an intense manner of preaching and catechesis. It is our part to speak in this way, and it is your part to keep yourselves secure. This is beautifully said: “If you stand firm in the faith, blessed are you.”
If, he says, you have stood firm in the faith, you are blessed. “Have you fallen into unbelief? Cast away your unbelief from this very day and be brought to full assurance.” From today onward, cast unbelief aside; drive away your rationalism.
“Be brought to full assurance.” The verb used here does not mean what we mean today when we say, “I have some information to give you.” It means “to bring to fullness.” That is the meaning of the verb: to bring something to its full completion.
This is what the Apostle Paul says to Timothy: “Fulfill your ministry”—that is, your service, your ministry in the Gospel. It does not mean, “Report on it,” as though you were to provide information about what you are doing and give an account: “I do this, and I do that.” No. “Fulfill it” means “bring it to completion.” In other words, carry the ministry entrusted to you through to perfection. That is what “be brought to full assurance” means. Today, Saint Cyril says, cast all these things away—whatever deficiency, unbelief, and so forth you have within you—and strive to attain fullness. “For at the time of Baptism, when you approach the bishops, priests, or deacons—
for grace is everywhere: in villages and cities, among ordinary people and scholars, among the uneducated and the educated, among slaves and free people; because grace does not come from men, but the gift comes from God through men.” That is, when the time comes for you to receive Baptism, whether bishops, priests, or deacons stand before you, whoever they may be and wherever your Baptism takes place—whether in a village or a city, and whether it is performed by an educated or an uneducated man—
he means this: “Approach the one who baptizes you. But as you approach, do not attend to the visible person; remember instead the Holy Spirit, of whom we are now speaking.” Do not focus, he says, on the person visibly baptizing you, but on the One who will truly baptize you: the Holy Spirit. Remember the Holy Spirit, of whom we are now speaking. “For He stands ready to seal your soul and to give you a seal before which the demons tremble, a heavenly and divine seal, as it is written: ‘Having believed in Him, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.’”
Notice this: the Holy Spirit is ready to seal your soul and give you that seal before which the demons tremble, because this seal is something divine and heavenly. And it is written. Where is it written? In the Apostle Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians: “In Him”—that is, in the Holy Spirit—“having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.” What happens, then, my beloved, when we are baptized? We are sealed. This seal is a matter of tremendous importance—tremendous importance.
A little further on, Saint Cyril will tell us—though we will not have time to examine it today—“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit, with whom you have been sealed.” We shall look at this next time. As I told you a little earlier, we have two passages dealing with the seal. Here he says that the Holy Spirit comes to seal you.
When we celebrate the Mystery of Chrismation, we say, “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.” This seal is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Through the Mystery of Chrismation we receive—take careful note—we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Here Saint Cyril is not speaking about the Mystery of Chrismation, but about the Mystery of Baptism. Concerning the Mystery of Chrismation, the Evangelist John tells us: “You have the anointing.”
And therefore you can know and discern, because we are not like those who do not have the anointing. What is this anointing? It is the gift of the Holy Spirit by which we are enabled to distinguish truth from falsehood and the divine from the demonic. But that is not what Saint Cyril is discussing here. He is speaking about Baptism. For who performs the Mystery of Baptism? Certainly not the priest. The priest is simply the one who lends his hands and his tongue, just as he does in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist.
The Mysteries are wrought by the Holy Spirit. We say, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” but
the Holy Spirit brings the Mystery to completion in the name of the Holy Trinity—in the name of the Father and in the name of the Son. I have told you several times during our last two catechetical talks that the Holy Spirit always acts in the name of Jesus Christ, because the Holy Spirit desires to reveal Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is the witness—the foremost witness—to Jesus Christ. Therefore, the seal we receive here is the seal of the Holy Spirit, signifying that we have been baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity. Listen carefully: this seal is indelible and invisible.
It is invisible to us, but visible to the holy angels and to the demons. To our eyes this seal cannot be seen. You may look at a person and not know whether he is a Christian. But when the devil or a demon sees someone, he knows whether that person has been baptized, because he sees the seal of the Holy Spirit clearly imprinted upon him—I emphasize, clearly imprinted. And this is a seal before which the demons tremble.
The demons tremble before it. Pay careful attention to this point, my beloved: the demons tremble before this seal of the Holy Spirit. This seal
is also the sign that we belong to God. Christ purchased us. In the final chapter—the sixth chapter—of First Corinthians, it says: “You were bought with a price.” Do you know that we belong to Christ in two ways? In two ways. First, because He fashioned us as God the Word (Logos). And second—indeed, this does not concern only Adam and Eve, for somewhere around the second or third chapter of the Wisdom of Sirach there is something astonishing. It speaks of Wisdom, the Wisdom who exists as a person, and who is present with each human being as that person is formed in his mother’s womb.
Did you hear that? So we belong to Christ in two ways: as God the Word (Logos), He fashioned and created us; and as Jesus Christ, He re-created us through Baptism. We belong to Him twice over. We are brothers and sisters with all people, including the unbaptized. We are brothers and sisters in the first sense, since, as Paul says in his address at the Areopagus, “God made every nation of men from one blood.”
But we are brothers and sisters by blood, and we are also brothers and sisters with Christians who have been baptized of the Spirit. Thus, among ourselves we are brothers and sisters twice over, while with the unbaptized we are brothers and sisters once. This is why we must love all people, not only those who belong to the household of faith. We must love the others as well, because by our common nature and creation all human beings are our brothers and sisters.
Thank you. So we are Christ’s possession. “You were bought with a price.” What was that price? The blood of Christ shed upon the Cross. And now this possession must be sealed. You may ask, was it ever sealed before? When? When God the Word (Logos) fashioned us, He placed His seal upon us. What was that seal? The image of God. The image of God was the seal man received. That image grew dim because man sinned. It was not lost; it grew dim, or it fell, as we say. Now God the Word (Logos) comes a second time to reclaim us, and the Holy Spirit comes to place upon us the seal showing that we belong to God—just as a document is valid only when it bears a seal. Do you see? Consider a signature
A seal. If a document does not bear a signature and a seal, it has no standing. It is just a piece of paper—nothing, invalid. So it is here as well: He seals us. This seal is indelible. Even if you, my baptized Christian, fall into five hundred heresies, you are not baptized again. You receive Chrismation again, but you do not receive Baptism again. That is why, as I told you, this seal is indelible. And now, my beloved, if this seal is kept intact, clearly impressed, and undefiled, it will serve us on the day of Christ’s Second Coming.
In the other passage—we shall say more about it next time, though I have already told you enough—it says: “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” It will do no harm to say a little about this now. At the Second Coming, this seal will show that we belong to God. And the Apostle says, “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.” If you are not faithful Christians, the seal remains, but you grieve the Holy Spirit, because it was He who sealed us. He Himself. The seal, then, is indelible, necessary—absolutely necessary. Why? Because the devil also has a seal. It is the seal that the Antichrist will use when he seals those
who, although they were sealed with the seal of the Holy Spirit—with the two seals, the first being the image of God and the second the seal of the Holy Spirit received in Baptism—will reject that seal. These Christians of ours will reject it. It is indelible, just as the image of God is. Whatever you may do, even in Hell you will bear the image of God. You will remain a rational human being, bearing the image of God there. And so on. It cannot be removed. The image of God is something inherent in our very existence. Yet, in substance, you have rejected these things. And once you have rejected them, the Antichrist will come and place his own seal upon you.
Does Holy Scripture not tell us very plainly that the Antichrist will impose his seal, which will be the number 666? Those, then, who worship him will have denied the seal of the Holy Spirit. It is dreadful—truly dreadful. A question was once raised—and we shall speak of it again, though we discussed it long ago when we were studying the Apocalypse: when someone receives the seal of the Antichrist, can he repent? Unfortunately, he cannot. Perhaps some who hear this talk, both those present and those listening on cassette, will say, “Surely not!” My beloved, I fear that he cannot. Of course, I could bring forward passages from Holy Scripture concerning this.
The Apostle Paul says in the Epistle to the Hebrews that anyone who has trampled underfoot the blood of Christ—pay attention to this—which is the supreme sacrifice, since it is through this supreme sacrifice that we have been saved, if anyone tramples upon this sacrifice of Christ, through which we received the seal from the Holy Spirit, then by what other sacrifice can he be saved? Do you hear? The sacrifice of Christ has been rejected. Christ has been rejected. Rejected. The seal has been violated.
He asks: by what sacrifice can this person be saved? There is no greater sacrifice. Therefore, he cannot be saved. Therefore, he cannot cast off that seal. He cannot cast it off. Let us hold firmly to this point, my beloved, because, I tell you, it is painful. It is a matter of salvation. And the Antichrist is continually present. He is continually sealing people. There are people who depart from this world without metanoia, without repentance. They have been sealed with the seal of Satan and of the Antichrist. Do not be surprised. A few days ago, I was reading Saint Kosmas of Aetolia because I needed something, and I remembered a question that had once been raised concerning something he said. Perhaps this is an opportunity to answer it now. The question was raised two or three years ago. You see, I may be slow, but I do not forget. Now, pay attention. Saint Kosmas says: “If you wish to know, the Antichrist has come; and if you wish to know, the Prophet Elijah has also come.” The question was:
“Does this mean that we should expect neither another Antichrist nor another Prophet Elijah?” The answer is very simple, yet very important. During the years of Ottoman rule, Muhammad and Islam were regarded as antichrist. That is what Saint Kosmas means. He does not mean that he denies the coming of the actual Antichrist. Rather, this understanding was very widespread at that time: that Muhammad and Islam were a terrible antichrist, because through them Christians were being stripped of their Christian faith. And do you know how the seal of the Antichrist was placed upon them? Through the circumcision imposed on our Christians. This is why some Saints—Saint Constantine of Hydra, Saint Gideon... Pay attention, pay attention—they repented.
They repented after receiving circumcision, that seal of the Antichrist. Yes, they were saved; they became Saints. But that seal was circumcision, which shows that this was not the final Antichrist. Let us take heed—let us take great heed. And what does Saint Kosmas mean concerning the Prophet Elijah? He means: “I am the Prophet Elijah.” He is not the Prophet Elijah himself, but he stands in the place of the Prophet Elijah; that is, “I have come to say what the Prophet Elijah says, or what the Prophet Elijah will say.” So I have also given you the answer to that question. Now pay attention to something else. The Antichrist is continually sealing people. And when his final seal is imposed, no one will any longer be able to be saved. No one will have the possibility of being saved. Therefore, let us take the greatest care to preserve intact the seal with which
the Holy Spirit sealed us when we were baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity. May the Lord bless you. Now we truly have finished.
