Summary
Continuing Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s seventeenth Catechetical Lecture, the speaker examines Saint Paul’s many references to the Holy Spirit in Scripture. This Spirit-led unity should govern both parish ministries and the domestic church, especially the shared decisions of husbands and wives. The Church’s disciplines of fasting and restraint train believers to govern appetite, alcohol use, and sensuality while cultivating spiritual freedom.

We are still with Saint Cyril and his Catechetical Lectures—Lecture Seventeen, my dear friends, paragraph 33, which we did not finish last time. The subject is the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril simply cites passages from the epistles of the Apostle Paul to show how frequently the Holy Spirit is mentioned in Holy Scripture. And Saint Cyril continues. Of course, he only cites these passages; as we were saying, he refers to them briefly.
He does not explain them at length, so that there will be enough time, as he himself says. We, however, have more freedom, because we have been baptized, whereas his catechumens had not yet been baptized and their Baptism was approaching. Since we are baptized, we have time to examine these things more fully. Although, a little further on, he himself says that they will have time afterward to acquire this fuller knowledge and go more deeply into it. So: “And again the same one says.” Who is “the same one”? The Apostle Paul. He says “and again” because he is referring to various passages.
“Which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy Apostles and prophets in the Spirit.”
This refers to God the Word (Logos), who, of course, was not revealed to previous generations, but is now revealed. And He is revealed… Here we meet something that often makes translation difficult. We say “in Christ Jesus” and “in the Holy Spirit”; that something became known or was revealed “in the Spirit.” What does this mean?
Let me explain it to you, so that you may know, because it is of fundamental importance. The Father is known through the Son, and the Son is known through the Holy Spirit. “No one,” says the Son, “comes to the Father except through Me.” No one reaches the Father except through Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul also says, “No one can say that Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit.” Therefore, I cannot confess and recognize Jesus as my God unless the Holy Spirit reveals to me who He is.
I cannot say it otherwise. I once told you that one indication of whether we have the Spirit of God is this—though what we possess is insufficient. The passage itself is not insufficient; forgive me. Rather, our “possession,” if you will allow that word—and I place “possession” in quotation marks—of the Holy Spirit is insufficient. We need more of the Holy Spirit, and still more, as though He were some quantity that we had to gather and store up, so to speak. Take care: I say “so to speak”! Do not understand this literally. Yet to confess that Jesus is God is of fundamental importance, because I can never confess Jesus as God unless I…
…have the Holy Spirit. It is stated clearly and explicitly: “No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except in the Holy Spirit.” Thus, through the Holy Spirit I come to know who Jesus is. Would you like to see this demonstrated in a magnificent and overwhelming way? When did the disciples—the disciples of Christ, those chosen by the Lord, who ate and drank with Him, who became His Apostles, who witnessed all that happened during His Passion, His Crucifixion and His Resurrection, and who touched Him—when did they come to know who Jesus Christ truly is? Do you know when? When…
…the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost. Then they received full knowledge of the Son of God. Who, then, reveals the Son? The Holy Spirit. And who reveals the Father? The Son.
And so…
The Father acts in the world through the Son, in the Holy Spirit. Conversely, through the Holy Spirit and through Jesus—that is, through the Son—we come to know the Father. The movement is: Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Our movement is the reverse: Holy Spirit, Son, Father. We move in the opposite direction.
In other words, what is our relationship with the Father? It is in the Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ, just as the Father acts through Jesus Christ, in the Holy Spirit. This is exceedingly important, exceedingly important, and we must never forget it. It is also an indication that we must have the Spirit of God. Yet we have pushed Him to the margins of our lives. I have told you this many times: we do not call upon Him, and we do not know Him. In doing so, of course, we do not wrong Him; we wrong ourselves. Let us read. And again Saint Cyril says: “Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says…”
“As the Holy Spirit says.” Ah, so the Holy Spirit says something; the Holy Spirit speaks, because He is a Person. And again: “The Holy Spirit also bears witness to us.” The Holy Spirit bears witness to us as well. You know, whenever we make a decision together, in council, in the Church—and “in council, in the Church” means two or more persons—we should remember what Christ said: “If two or three agree in My name, I will grant them what they ask of Me.”
Agreement between two or three persons is exceedingly important. We already have the Church there. With two or more persons, we have the Church; we have an assembly. When these two or more people agree about something, and their agreement is in God and is what God wills, then what is written here so beautifully takes place: “The Holy Spirit also bears witness to us,” or “bears witness together with us.” The Holy Spirit gives His testimony. If you ask me how we can recognize this testimony of the Holy Spirit after we have made a decision…
Can we recognize this testimony of the Holy Spirit? What signs should we look for? What would we answer? Somewhere in one of his epistles, the Apostle Paul asks how the Spirit of God can dwell where there are quarrels and divisions. Division means breaking into factions. That is what division is. One group of one, two, three, or five people holds one opinion; you hold another, and others hold still another. This is called division. How can the Spirit of God rest or remain where there are disputes, arguments, fighting, and factions?
How can He remain where there are envy and hatred? Therefore, my dear friends, when an assembly has made a decision after praying that the Spirit of God will illumine us and show us what to do, so that we are not acting apart from the Holy Spirit—please pay attention to this point, and you will see what I mean—we do not fight among ourselves. We have no quarrels, and we do not immediately begin saying, “I disagree, so I am going my own way.” Such things have no place there. There is agreement. I would also say that even if some people in an assembly have an objection, this is because the Spirit of God does not abolish distinct persons.
On the contrary, He brings each person into fullness. But their objection must not become the cause of arguments or anything of that kind. They may say, “I would have some objection to this, but if all of you agree, I too will consent, even though I see it somewhat differently.” My dear friends, the Spirit of God leaves room for each person. He does not come to impose Himself, saying, “Whether you want it or not, this is how it will be.” If the decision you make is in harmony with the Holy Spirit, then He will come and give you His testimony. And that testimony comes through peace. When decisions have been made after an assembly…
…and peace, joy, and resolve to carry out those decisions prevail, then the Spirit of God bears witness together with us. Let me now offer two or three practical examples—two practical examples, since we are speaking about the Church. Some people hold ministries and serve in the Church. It is a great honor to serve the Church. You know the ministry of the church caretaker, the neokoros. The word comes from neos, meaning temple, because in Homeric Greek a temple was called a neos.
A woman who serves in this way is called a neokora. The word is formed from neos, temple, and koros or kouros, a young man; thus it means the young man who serves the temple. Indeed, it was considered a great honor for Ephesus—we find this in the Acts of the Apostles—when a tremendous uproar was stirred up by that notorious Demetrius. He was a kind of craftsman who made votive objects, and he realized that his business would not prosper if Christianity prevailed, so he incited the city. Then someone, attempting to calm the crowd, said: “It is well known…”
“The city of Ephesus is the temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis.” In other words, the entire city of Ephesus, which at that time was the capital of proconsular Asia, served the temple of Artemis. This was considered an honor, and the speaker—the chief public official of the time—mentioned it precisely as a mark of distinction. In the same way, my dear friends, these ministries within the Church are honorable. Truly, if you were told that there was no particular woman available to serve inside the church—to sweep, clean the metal objects, and do the other work a woman might do within a church…
…would you be ashamed to do it? Would you consider it beneath you? We have reached the point where we sometimes appoint a poor widow to serve as the church woman, the neokora, and give her a small wage. All these circumstances have created a very demeaning image of the woman who serves the church. But that is not how things truly are. I explained this earlier through the example of the goddess Artemis at Ephesus. Then there are other members of the staff who are now considered more important. Why more important? There is no higher and lower service within the Church.
The parish council members, for example, will attend to the church’s income and expenses, good order in the church, and so forth. The chanters serve in the same way. In the past, the people themselves chanted; today, one or more people chant in their place. The chanter, too, is a servant of the church. So I ask you: when decisions are made in a church today—the priest presiding; I told you I would give you a specific example—are those decisions made properly and peacefully, in the presence of the Holy Spirit, or without the Holy Spirit? Are the members of one mind, or are they divided into factions?
And if someone disagrees, will he, as a parish council member, go out the next day into the marketplace and the shops and tell everyone what decision was made? Or will the chairman, the priest, go out and say, “This is what the committee decided,” as though he had nothing to do with it? The Spirit of God is certainly not present there. My dear friends, the people of the Church, above all others, must be of one mind. And they will be, if they set their egos aside. Someone makes a proposal. The Holy Spirit, as we have said, leaves room for initiative, and another person says, “Would it perhaps be better to modify our brother’s proposal in this way?” “Yes,” the others will say.
And the person who first expressed his opinion says, “Indeed, that is better.” A third person says, “May I add something else by way of a further modification?” Then the third person’s amendment improves upon the proposals of both the second and the first. Tell me, when will we agree? When there is no egoism. And who will then be present among us? The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will also bear witness to the decisions. That is one example. The other example is this. I told you that wherever there are two or more, there is a church. The Lord said, “Where two or three are gathered together,” and so forth. Consider a husband and wife. Do they not constitute a church?
Indeed, if you like, they form what is called the domestic church. These two spouses are constantly making decisions about their life. They confer, decide, and act. But how do they decide and act? Peacefully, or with quarrelling? If they hold on to their egos, they will never do anything peacefully. They then drive away the Holy Spirit, and that is the great tragedy. Do you want the Holy Spirit to bear witness together with the spouses? Then they must set their egos aside. When the wife proposes something, the husband can improve upon what she has proposed.
Then the wife in turn can improve upon what her husband has said, and in the end they arrive at a greatly improved decision. They do not quarrel. If one of them does not agree, it is not a disaster. The matter is not one of life and death. We make a decision and yield to one another. There we have the Spirit of God. But sometimes, my dear friends, spouses do not agree. Perhaps a husband makes a decision about something—what example can I give you? Let us say it concerns furniture. He says, “Let us buy this furniture,” and so they buy it. Then the wife pines away, grows miserable, and cries every day because they did not buy the furniture she wanted.
My dear friend, can there be peace in that home? What does Saint Isaac the Syrian say about material things? Never repent over material things. Perhaps we did not get exactly what we wanted; perhaps we bought something of lower quality. It does not matter. Let us only be well—let us be well, and nothing more. Must we quarrel? Must there be constant grumbling? I think that no one needs the Holy Spirit more than two spouses living together in the home. I trust you agree. Let us continue. Once again Saint Cyril says: “Addressing the soldiers of righteousness, he says...”
The Holy Spirit speaks to the soldiers of virtue—for here righteousness means virtue—and addresses them, saying: “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, through every prayer and supplication.” Once again, as you see, Saint Cyril does not comment on everything, but selects only the principal points. “And do not become drunk with wine, in which there is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.” How beautiful this is! Do not become drunk with wine, in which there is dissipation.
Is dissipation actually in the wine? The syntax may seem to say so, since the phrase is “in which,” and its subject is understood to be the wine. But we would say that it depends on how we use the wine. Therefore: do not become drunk with wine, in which there is dissipation.
I put it that way so that we do not imagine that God has placed within creation things which are evil and dissipated in themselves—God forbid! The same is true even of narcotic substances. They are not things that God created with dissipation contained within them. No. It is we who misuse them. And do not forget that...
I was speaking about this very thing today with a young person who may be overly fond of coffee. I said to him, “Coffee? You should not drink coffee. Why would you drink it?” And so forth. Especially a child—should a child be drinking coffee? It is very dangerous. If you find this worth considering, remember that it is not my own idea and I am not saying anything novel; it has been written about. Coffee is not an edible product, that is, a food. Coffee is a pharmacological product and ought to be sold in pharmacies rather than grocery stores. Is God to blame when we misuse things? Certainly not. Therefore, do not become drunk with wine, in which there is dissipation, but be filled. Why does the Apostle use the words “be filled”? Because he has spoken of drunkenness...
And drunkenness presupposes a kind of fullness, a filling up. That is why he uses the verb “be filled”—filled with the Holy Spirit—and says that you should speak to yourselves in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Let us make just a few comments here. My dear friends, we must be careful regarding wine and other alcoholic drinks. Many of our brethren use them in a way that, without their realizing it, has become abuse. When we drink an alcoholic beverage every day, whether wine or beer—and much worse if it is tsipouro or ouzo—when we drink daily, and I am naming only these Greek drinks...
What am I to say about foreign spirits that are ninety degrees alcohol? What can I say? What do you think? If we have alcohol with our meals every day, at noon and in the evening, would it be an exaggeration to say—not on my own authority, for it has been written—that chronic alcoholism develops? That is, a chronic poisoning which is not outwardly apparent. We often think that acute poisoning is the dangerous kind, and acute poisoning is drunkenness. But the other kind is slow, yet certain.
Tihamér Tóth, the Hungarian author whose little books were translated years ago and read by our young people, wrote a booklet entitled Young People and Alcohol. He advises students, saying, “My child, for as long as you are a student, do not drink alcoholic beverages at all.” A foreign surgeon, when asked why he did not drink alcohol, replied, “Because, as I grow older, I want to keep my hand as steady as possible, so that I can continue to perform operations.” We would therefore say that an alcoholic drink is not sinful when it is used reasonably.
Very wisely, when the Church has appointed fasting from oil, she has also appointed fasting from wine. When I fast from oil, I do not drink alcoholic beverages. This is well known. That is why, when oil is permitted—excuse me, when it is a Wednesday or Friday outside Lent and a feast occurs—the Horologion says, “Wine and oil are permitted.” This shows that alcohol is placed on the same level as oil. When you fast, therefore, you do not drink alcoholic beverages. This is a beautiful way of cultivating restraint, together with the self-control that must be observed during a fast: throughout Lent, on Wednesdays and Fridays, and during the other fasting seasons.
There is also restraint on Sundays, even though Sundays are not fast days—outside the fasting seasons, of course. Because of the solemnity of the day, restraint is observed, as it is on the day when we are to receive Holy Communion, and on other such occasions. During Bright Week, although every kind of food is permitted, restraint is still observed in marital relations. In this way, self-control is cultivated beautifully in every aspect of life. The Church places the reins in your hands so that you may govern the irrational part within you. I said “irrational,” intending to say “horse,” but the word is even more fitting. A horse is an irrational animal. In Greek, however, “irrational” is an adjective, not a noun, though the word came to be used as a name for the horse. But a cat is also irrational.
It is an irrational animal, and so is a dog; that is, it does not possess reason. This irrational element, our instincts, is what the Church, in her wisdom, teaches you to hold by the reins, so that you can govern the untamed animal within you, my brother. Is this not truly wise? A French physician, René Biot, who was a colleague of Alexis Carrel, wrote a book about the family. In it he says: “The pursuit of pleasure between spouses is the worm that eats away at the happiness of married life.” I will say it once again. The pursuit of pleasure...
Between spouses is the worm that eats away at the happiness of married life. Shall I also say that this pursuit of pleasure later leads people into perversions? Into perversions—a phenomenon that, sadly, is extremely common in our time. When the element of sensual pleasure is sought by every possible means, married life dies, and the happiness of married life dies with it. When the Church appoints restraint, she does so with the greatest wisdom, in the Holy Spirit. She tells you not to drink wine when it is Lent, or on a Wednesday or Friday, unless wine is permitted. She puts a bridle upon you.
The Church tells you that you are not to have marital relations during days of Lent and fasting. She puts a bridle upon you, so that the pursuit of pleasure may be restrained. The same applies to food, so that we do not fall into gluttony. All these disciplines are so wise in their form, their character, and their measure. Yes, I said their measure as well. If you count the days, a little more than half the year—more than 180 days—is observed as fasting. This is very important. In other words, half the days are fasting days. The Church gives you some freedom and then draws you back again. How wise this is! Therefore, we must...
Value the Canons of our Church. They are not harsh or insensitive to human nature; they are wise. They are wise because they were established in the Holy Spirit, just as I have been explaining all this to you. And do not teach your children—I return now to the subject of alcohol—do not teach your children to drink alcohol.
Some fathers are so indulgent toward their precious little sons, especially if they have only one, and—God protect the child—the way they ruin him is appalling. You would be horrified if I told you. But why should you be horrified? Most likely you have all seen it, perhaps many times. They begin teaching a little child, a boy, from the age of four or five...
They put an alcoholic drink to his lips—a little beer, a little wine—so that he will get used to alcohol. And listen to the reason: so that he will become a man. They even teach the little child to blaspheme sacred things. Do not be surprised. Do you know why? So that he will become a man. Now, whether drunkenness and blasphemy are marks of manhood, I leave to your judgment; you can think about it for yourselves. There are also women who share these strange and distorted ideas...
Such women would want a certain kind of husband because they imagine that this is where his masculinity lies: in smoking, drinking, and even using violence. Yes, there are women like that—there is violence as well. In other words, such women want to be beaten, because that gives them the sense that their husband is masculine, that he is a man. All these things, my dear friends, are signs of perversion. They are signs of perversion. Once I went to a house. I was young then. This is, of course, the first time I have spoken of this publicly, and I do not...
know whether I ought to tell it. I used to repair radios—I was once a radio technician—and I had gone to the home of a woman we knew because her radio had broken down. I repaired it for her. Her husband had died. They had both been elderly: he had died an old man, and she was an elderly woman. When I brought the radio back, I sensed that something was not right. My dear friends, without becoming suspicious people, we must still use our heads a little. She said to me, “Stay for a while.” I was in a hurry to leave; I had work to do. “How did you happen to come here?”
“I have no time; I have work to do.” She said, “May I offer you something? An alcoholic drink?” I said, “I do not drink.” She said, “A cigarette?” I said, “I do not smoke.” She said, “Oh, stay for a while.” She was after something else. She was after something else. Alas for the young tradesmen who go into homes to repair something and encounter women like that, and so forth. Alas, indeed—many times, alas. A young man entering a house, even if he is married, must be extremely careful. Extremely careful. So I pretended to look at my watch, as though it had grown late. “I am in a hurry,” I said. In other words, I created an artificial sense of haste, so to speak. She said, “How strange! You do not drink, you do not smoke...”
There lies dissipation. Let us not become drunk, as the Spirit of God tells us. But with what should we become drunk? With the Holy Spirit, says the Word of God. That is the meaning of “be filled”: be filled with the Spirit of God. And when you are filled with the Spirit of God—then, listen to what happens. Do you know what drunkards do, those who have become intoxicated?
Of course, they stagger along the road. Then they embrace the telephone poles. Then they cannot find the keyhole to put the key in. Then they embrace anyone they meet on the road. Woe to the priest they happen to meet! The drunken man will rush at him, embrace him, and kiss him. My dear friends, I have fallen victim to this myself, which is why I tell you. But they also sing in the street. They are merry. It may be one or two in the morning. They go home and open the windows because they feel hot. You know, a person who drinks feels hot; he becomes warm. But that warmth is only apparent. Quite simply, the cells—if I am saying this correctly, and may my...
brothers who are physicians forgive me; I can be rather rash when speaking about such things, but what can we do?—the cells try to expel the alcohol, because alcohol is an enemy of the cell: it dehydrates the cell, and the cell needs the water it contains. So the cell tries to drive out the alcohol. But through what route can it leave? The cells on the surface, in the skin, expel the alcohol through the epidermis. That is why the skin becomes red and warm. But this warmth is false. It is not warmth produced by real calories, such as those you receive from eating sugar or raisins. It is false warmth. That is why, when drunkards fall asleep outdoors in the street...
even though it is cold, they feel warm. They are burning up. In the morning they are found stiff, frozen, dead. Why? Because the warmth was false; it was not real. So the drunkard opens the windows and begins to sing, turning the radio up to full volume. He pays no attention to the fact that it is two in the morning and the neighbors are asleep. Well, the person who is filled with the Spirit of God also sings. This is why the Holy Spirit is an intoxication. We spoke about this, if you remember, in one of these Catechetical Lectures last year—the sixteenth or seventeenth, I do not remember. The Holy Spirit is an intoxication. That is why the Apostle Paul says, “speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.” Notice what he says.
“Speaking to yourselves”—to yourselves. Do not open the windows and begin shouting at the top of your voice. What would people think of you? But what does “to yourselves” mean? You understand who your own self is. It means chanting softly to yourself. Chant softly. That is what “speaking to yourselves” means. The spiritual person who is intoxicated with the Spirit of God has good judgment and a sound mind. He is a fine and joyful person. And you know, the Apostle Paul says, “Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.” Is someone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Therefore, when you have the Spirit of God, you are joyful, and in your joy you sing psalms. This is the intoxication to which we must always attend.
Let us go a little further. Again: “The grace of the Lord Jesus, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with us all.” This is a most beautiful passage, and allow me to conclude today’s study with it, because the paragraph that follows is... There are paragraphs 34, 35, 36, 37, and 38. Saint Cyril mainly returns to an earlier subject, because this is the next-to-last Catechetical Lecture—the next-to-last, apart from the Mystagogical Catecheses. The final lecture is the eighteenth, and this one is the seventeenth. But if you include the Procatechesis, there are nineteen.
Add the five Mystagogical Catecheses, and there are twenty-four. In the eighteenth lecture, he speaks to us about the resurrection of the dead. It seems that we may begin it this year—we shall see—but, God willing, if we live, it will be the subject of next year’s catechesis: the resurrection of the dead. In the paragraphs I mentioned earlier, however, he once again urges his catechumens to take care, now that their Baptism is drawing near. Of course, he also mentions the Holy Spirit, but this is his principal concern. As he says, “See that you do not approach Baptism in hypocrisy, as Simon did”—Simon, whom he discussed in the Procatechesis, in the first...
part of the Procatechesis. Do not be, he says, like Simon Magus, who asked to be baptized but was acting hypocritically, and so forth. Let us now examine this passage, which is very beautiful and full of meaning. It is essentially a blessing. Indeed, with this prayer, this blessing, the Apostle Paul concludes his Second Epistle to the Corinthians. I shall repeat it: “The grace of the Lord Jesus, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with us all.” It is a form of blessing belonging to the New Testament. And because it is a New Testament form of blessing, in which all three Persons of the Holy Trinity are mentioned...
our Church has placed this very form of blessing within the Divine Liturgy. The priest comes forward and says, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father”—he adds “the Father,” because when the passage says “God,” it means the Father—“and the communion of the Holy Spirit.” Is that not so? This is the form the Church uses. She does not change it. The wording differs slightly, but the spirit is the same: may they be with all of you. It is therefore a fundamental and foundational form of blessing. Pay close attention to this. This blessing, which comes from the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit...
is of fundamental importance, because without a blessing nothing can be accomplished. Nothing prospers. Therefore, for the whole of creation to exist—both rational creation, meaning human beings; I am speaking of visible creation here, not of the angels, though of course they should also be included—and irrational creation, meaning the animals, all these need the blessing of God in order to exist. Which God? The Holy Triune God. That is why, when God made the created order, the whole creation, He blessed everything. And this is how He blessed it.
He made the irrational creation first, for it preceded mankind. The Book of Genesis says, “And God blessed them”—the animals and plants—“saying, ‘Increase and multiply.’” In what does the blessing consist? In increase and multiplication. When He made man, man also had to be blessed, all the more so. And Holy Scripture says, “And God blessed them.” Notice: the animals, “them”; the human beings, “them.” “God said, ‘Increase and multiply and fill the earth.’”
“And have dominion over it.” For the animals there is only “increase and multiply,” but for man four things are mentioned: increase, multiplication, filling the earth, and having dominion over the earth. In other words, man is to be the ruler, the lord of creation. But it was not only space—the animal and plant kingdoms—that had to be blessed; time also had to be blessed. And when God completed creation, He then blessed time: “And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it.”
So here we see that the whole creation is blessed so that it may stand, and it is blessed by the Holy Triune God. Indeed, consider the opposite. The Psalmist says, “When You turn away Your face, they shall be troubled.” When You, O God, turn away Your face and no longer give Your blessing, everything falls into turmoil, into upheaval, into a condition foreign to created beings. When Christ came to earth, the Son blessed everything. He blessed His disciples. He blessed the waters. He blessed the bread for the five thousand.
He blessed the wine at the wedding in Cana. He blessed the catch of fish when the disciples caught so many. He blessed everything; He blessed the Church. As the Lord ascended into Heaven, the Evangelist Luke says, “He lifted up His hands”—He raised His hands—“and blessed them.” Whom did He bless? The disciples. “And it came to pass, while He blessed them”—while He was blessing them, because the disciples were the nucleus of the Church—“He was parted from them and carried up into Heaven.” In other words, He departed and remained in Heaven, continually blessing...
the whole creation, and above all His Church. You see, then, that blessing is of fundamental importance. In the Church of the Old Testament, blessing was of primary importance. Remember, please, how Esau wept and said, “Have you no blessing for me, my father?”
There is theology here. This was the blessing of the firstborn, the blessing of bringing forth the Messiah. He says, “Is there no blessing, father? Is there none?” The blessing that your fields would prosper and your animals would prosper remained—but he lost the blessing of bringing forth the Messiah.
The New Testament says concerning this that, although he wept bitterly, he could not obtain the blessing. A blessing is a very great thing. And when God gives His commandments, He says, “Do not be afraid to lend in the seventh year, because that is when debts are forgiven.” What a benevolent law of God! The same applies when you give alms or offer anything else. For if you give, then the Lord will bless you. How beautiful! There is also a prescribed form of blessing. It is found in Numbers. I have given you this form on other occasions. I shall recite it quickly now, because I want to bring this to a fitting close: “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,”
“Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying: Thus shall you bless the children of Israel, saying to them.” This is how you priests are to bless the people. That is why it is a commandment—a commandment. This is why I keep saying to you, “May the Lord bless you. May the Lord bless you.” As you pass by, I am constantly saying, “May the Lord bless you. May the Lord bless you.” It is a commandment. It is a commandment, and you need the blessing, for He goes on to say, “So shall they put My name upon the children of Israel, and I, the Lord, will bless them.” It is not the priest who blesses; it is the Lord. “It is enough,” He says, “that they put My name upon them.” When I say to you, “May the Lord bless you,” I place the name of the Lord upon you, and you receive the blessing from God. So do not think that asking for a blessing is some insignificant matter—
Listen carefully to the form of the blessing: “May the Lord bless you”—this is expressed as a prayer—“and keep you.” May the Lord bless you and keep you. “May the Lord make His face shine upon you and have mercy on you.” May the Lord turn His face toward you, a gracious face, and have mercy on you. “May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.” May the Lord lift up His face toward you and give you peace. And as Procopius says: “They shall place it upon them. Do you see that it is the name of the Lord that brings about the blessings, and not the one who speaks the name?” It is not the priest who pronounces the blessing, but the Lord who blesses. And
even if the one giving the blessing is sinful, the blessing is still made effective in the person who receives it with faith. Even if I am a sinful man, you will still receive God’s blessing, because it does not come from me. I am not the source of blessing; God is the source of blessing. Now we come to the New Testament. Pay attention. What do we have? “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ”—of Jesus Christ—“and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit,” or, to use the wording of Holy Scripture, “be with us all.” Why are these three things expressed differently? Concerning the person of Jesus Christ, it says “grace.” Why? Quite simply...
First of all, it is the Holy Trinity who appears as the God who blesses. But as John the Evangelist says in the first chapter of his Gospel, “Grace came through Jesus Christ.” What does “grace” mean here? It has two meanings. First, it has the meaning we use when speaking of a condemned prisoner: we granted him a pardon. That is, we pardoned him and released him from prison. A pardon—grace. How did this come about? Christ came and granted us grace. Allow me to explain: as you noticed, I hesitated a little and stumbled over my words. I wanted to use the verb “came,” but I was trying to find a parallel expression in order to translate it for you. The Evangelist rightly said that grace “came,” and not that Christ “gave” it. Do you know why?
Christ is not merely the bearer of grace; He Himself is the grace given to us. This is why the divinely inspired text says that “grace came through Jesus Christ”—not that it was given, but that it came into being through Him. A little earlier, the text says, “The law was given through Moses.” Moses is not the source of the law; Moses is the mediator. Therefore, it rightly says that the law “was given.” But here it says that grace “came,” because Jesus Christ Himself is grace. See how exact the wording is. What does it say next? “And the love of God the Father,” as we say in the Divine Liturgy. Yes, because it was the love of the Father...
that sent the Son and the Holy Spirit into the world. “For God so loved the world that”—as John says in the third chapter, the sixteenth verse—“He gave His only-begotten Son.” Therefore, love belongs to the Father, and grace belongs to the Son. And what does it say next? “And,” please note, “the communion of the Holy Spirit” be with you. Communion. Why does it say “the communion of the Holy Spirit”? Because the Holy Spirit abides with us. “I will send you,” says the Lord, “another Comforter,” who will remain with you in the Church. This phrase, “He will remain,” means that you will have communion with Him. To put it in simple terms, you will have the Holy Spirit as your companion. This is why it says, “And the communion of the Holy Spirit” be
with you. What a beautiful form of blessing, my dear friends! If we began to acquire a proper liturgical and scriptural understanding, and truly understood these things, then during the Divine Liturgy we would not stand with our hands in our pockets, nor would we remain seated when the priest comes out to give the blessing. Many people remain seated because they do not understand what is taking place, and because what we call liturgical formation is lacking. But when we begin to understand these things, then—oh, then!—at that moment you will say, “My goodness, I am receiving the love of the Father, the grace of the Son, and the communion of the Holy Spirit.” What greater blessing could there be than every other blessing ever given to mankind? My dear friends, that is all for this evening.

Αναφέρεται εις τον Θεόν Λόγον, που βεβαίως δεν απεκαλύφθη εις τις προηγούμενες γενεές, αλλά τώρα όμως πλέον αποκαλύπτεται. Και αποκαλύπτεται... Αυτό που πολλές φορές, όταν θέλουμε να μεταφράσουμε, δυσκολευόμαστε. Λέμε «ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ», «ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ», ότι εγνώσθη, εγνωρίσθη ή απεκαλύφθη «ἐν Πνεύματι». Πώς αυτό;
Μπορούμε να ξέρουμε αυτήν τη μαρτυρία του Αγίου Πνεύματος; Τι γνωρίσματα μπορούμε να έχουμε; Τι θα απαντούσαμε; Κάπου λέει ο Απόστολος Παύλος, σε μια του επιστολή, ότι πώς το Πνεύμα του Θεού μπορεί να μένει εκεί που υπάρχουν έριδες και διχοστασίες; Διχοστασία είναι να γινόμαστε κόμματα. Αυτό θα πει διχοστασία. Έχουμε ένα, δύο, τρεις, πέντε άλλους ανθρώπους, έχουμε μια γνώμη. Εσείς άλλη γνώμη, εσείς άλλη γνώμη. Αυτό λέγεται διχοστασία. Πώς μπορεί να αναπαύεται, πώς μπορεί να υπάρχει το Πνεύμα του Θεού εκεί που υπάρχουν έριδες, τσακώματα, μαλώματα και διχοστασίες;
Επίτροποι. Θα βγάλουν, ξέρω εγώ, θα επιμεληθούν το θέμα των εσόδων-εξόδων του ναού, την τάξη του ναού και λοιπά και λοιπά. Όπως και οι ψάλτες. Κάποτε έψαλλε ο λαός. Σήμερα ψάλλουν μόνο ένας ή περισσότεροι άνθρωποι εις αντικατάσταση του λαού. Και εκείνος, ο ψάλτης, υπηρέτης είναι του ναού. Σας ερωτώ: όταν σήμερα σε έναν ναό λαμβάνονται αποφάσεις — πρόεδρος είναι ο ιερεύς, σας είπα θα σας πω συγκεκριμένο παράδειγμα — οι αποφάσεις λαμβάνονται όμορφα, ειρηνικά, με την παρουσία του Αγίου Πνεύματος ή ερήμην του Αγίου Πνεύματος; Ομονοούν ή διχοστασιάζουν;
Αυτός που είπε τη γνώμη του: «Πράγματι, αυτό είναι καλύτερο». Ένας τρίτος: «Μπορώ να προσθέσω κάτι ακόμη με τροποποίηση;» Και του τρίτου η τροποποίηση να είναι μια βελτίωση του δευτέρου και του πρώτου. Πέστε μου, πότε θα συμφωνήσουμε; Όταν δεν υπάρχει ο εγωισμός. Και τότε τι θα έχουμε παρόν; Το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Και το Πνεύμα το Άγιον συνεπιμαρτυρεί επί των αποφάσεων. Αυτό είναι το ένα παράδειγμα. Το άλλο παράδειγμα είναι, τι λέτε, είναι... Σας είπα, εκκλησία είναι από δύο και πάνω. Ο Κύριος το είπε: «Όπου δύο ή τρεις συνηγμένοι» κλπ. Είναι οι δύο σύζυγοι. Δεν αποτελούν εκκλησία;
Εεεε... Εμφανίζεται καταρχάς ο Άγιος Τριαδικός Θεός που ευλογεί, αλλά, όπως λέει ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης στο πρώτο του κεφάλαιο, «η χάρις διά Ιησού Χριστού εγένετο». Τι θα πει χάρις εδώ; Έχει δύο σημασίες. Καταρχάς μεν τη σημασία που λέμε για έναν κατάδικο: του δώσαμε χάρη. Δηλαδή, τον αμνηστεύσαμε, τον βγάλαμε από τη φυλακή. Χάρη. Αυτό πώς έγινε; Ήρθε ο Χριστός και μας έδωσε τη χάρη. Ας μου επιτραπεί, εδώ, βλέπετε, λίγο εδίστασα, κόμπιασα να το πω. Ήθελα να πω το ρήμα «εγένετο», αλλά προσπαθούσα να βρω ένα παράλληλο για να σας το μεταφράσω. Ορθώς είπε «εγένετο» και όχι «έδωσε». Ξέρετε γιατί;
