Summary
Saint Cyril teaches that apostolic preaching rests on the Holy Spirit’s power rather than persuasive human wisdom. The resurrection of Christ is the work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with apparently different biblical expressions revealing one Trinitarian action. The Holy Spirit is a living divine Person who speaks and foretells apostasy, schisms, and heresies arising especially through pride, rationalism, and private interpretation.

Beloved, we are at paragraph 32 of Saint Cyril’s Seventeenth Catechetical Lecture, which concerns the Holy Spirit. He continues: “And that Paul was indeed filled with the Holy Spirit, as were all the Apostles like him, and those after them who believed in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, consubstantial, hear plainly what he writes in his epistles: ‘My speech and my preaching were not in persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.’”
Of course, Paul and the other Apostles all had the same Spirit, the Holy Spirit. They believed in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as one God, that is, one essence, and so forth. Saint Cyril says: Listen to what the Apostle Paul writes: “My preaching is not in persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.” Of course, from our previous meetings you have understood that here...
Saint Cyril merely makes a brief reference and then moves on, because, as he himself says, he cannot develop these matters fully. Time was passing, the Baptism of those preparing for illumination was close at hand, and therefore he had little time left. He hoped that an opportunity would someday be given to him to explain these things more fully in the Church, so that his catechumens might learn them. Here, however, we shall pause from time to time at certain points and offer a brief analysis. This analysis supplies what Saint Cyril did not have time to do. It is also a pleasant opportunity, because besides learning certain things, at the same time...
we also receive what we might call a vivid form of teaching, since it refers to certain historical details. These also give us a little rest. Instead of telling jokes—which, as you have realized, are no longer part of these talks—I shall very rarely tell you one. Holy Scripture itself gives us vivid material that we can use when teaching the Word of God. So here he says: “My speech and my preaching do not rest upon human words of persuasive wisdom, but upon the demonstration of the Spirit and of power.” Let us comment briefly on this.
Suppose we wish to preach a sermon, as I am doing now—whether during a service or anywhere else. Anyone, anywhere, whether clergy or laypeople, may wish to preach. Of course, to persuade the audience, the preacher must also have arguments. But where will those arguments come from? That is the question. Or consider a theology teacher at school, teaching students. The teacher must offer certain arguments. Where will those arguments come from? The Apostle Paul tells us that they do not come from human reasoning, as though he were persuading people with arguments drawn from...
human reasoning and human wisdom. Rather, his arguments are those that demonstrate the power of the Holy Spirit. This is exceedingly important and profound. We can understand it in this way: when we set out to speak the Word of God, we must not sit down and search for a thousand human arguments to support what we will say to our listeners, our students, or those with whom we are having a discussion. Instead, we must pray—pay close attention to this—we must pray that our listeners may be persuaded...
through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, and that God may reveal His word within the souls of the listeners, so that they may receive it. This is an action that does not begin with the speaker, but with the Holy Spirit. This is what the Apostle Paul means. “I do not take up arguments in order to persuade you,” the Apostle Paul is saying, “because the One who will persuade you is the Spirit of God.” How will the Spirit of God approach your hearts? First of all, through my own prayer—the prayer of the speaker, the Apostle, the theologian, the teacher, or whoever it may be. We must pray.
Prayer is exceedingly important. Allow me to speak about this, because I am always greatly pleased that there are theologians in our audience, both women and men, who teach children. This gives me great joy and also reveals their humility. In any case, it is something very important, and I commend it. Before leaving home, they should offer a special prayer that the lessons they will teach at school may be understood by the students. I do not mean understood merely because our students are bright and intelligent and because we have irrefutable arguments. Not in that sense, because...
very well, we may have satisfied their reason, but nothing further has come of it. What is needed are those arguments—or rather, those demonstrations—that the Spirit of God must give. If the heart is not opened, nothing happens. Would you like me to express this through a most beautiful and incomparable phrase from the Book of Acts? Listen, and I shall tell it to you, because it will be a long time before we reach that passage. When the Apostle Paul arrived at Philippi, he preached. Outside the city he found a group of women holding what we might call a Bible-study gathering. One of these women was the Greek woman known to us as Lydia.
She was a dynamic person, a remarkable woman, with a great heart and a fine mind. She appears to have been gifted in intellect, feeling, and will. I shall explain this very briefly. She had great strength of will, because it is remarkable that a woman in the ancient world was a merchant. A woman merchant! And look at what she traded: costly purple cloth, a very expensive fabric worn by rulers and kings. In other words, to put it in modern language, she handled considerable capital. She was a strong-willed person. She was also a woman of deep feeling. Listen to what she says to Paul: “If you have judged me...”
“If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord,” if you consider me worthy before the Lord, “please come and stay at my home”—that is, allow me to offer you hospitality. Here we have a beautiful example of the vivid teaching I mentioned. We expand the account a little and tell you a few pleasant details, so that you can picture it. Paul acted as though he did not wish to go. At first, he truly did not want to. He did not make a habit of going just anywhere. He had his own manner and his own reasons. He went wherever he judged it right to go. So perhaps he really did not want to go; or perhaps he did want to and only pretended otherwise. “Oh, no, no.” “Please, come to my house.” “Oh, no, no, no.” If you ask me how we know this...
there is a verb that proves it. Luke says: “And she prevailed upon us.” This is why we must pay attention and possess a rich vocabulary. In other words, she applied a little pressure—a little pressure. “No, that will not do. You must come inside, please. That settles it; there is no other way.” It is a lovely detail: “And she prevailed upon us.” She was also a sensible person. She realized that she could offer her house for use as a church—that is, as a gathering place for the faithful. She arranged everything very well. Lydia was truly a remarkable person. And while she was listening to Paul speak...
we hear this short phrase from the Evangelist Luke: “The Lord opened Lydia’s heart.” When Luke says “the Lord” here, which of the three Persons of the Holy Trinity are we to understand? The Holy Spirit. While Paul is speaking, the Holy Spirit unlocks Lydia’s heart. He opened it. Indeed, the Greek verb used here means something like “to pierce through and make an opening.” Think of a burglar: the doors are iron and the walls are solid brick. What can he do? He wants to get inside, so he begins to make a hole. In the same way, the human heart is a fortress, and the Holy Spirit comes and makes an opening...
in order to enter. This is what the verb conveys: “He opened”—“He opened Lydia’s heart.” This is the demonstration and the power of the Holy Spirit. That is why the Apostle Paul says: “I do not come to speak to you with human arguments. I have the Spirit of God. It is the Spirit of God who will open your hearts. While I am speaking, you will understand; and when you understand, you will be deeply moved.” Therefore, first of all, prayer is necessary; and second, the speaker’s arguments must always come from the Word of God. We do not need crutches or arguments borrowed from outside. Why should I use philosophy? It would be unreasonable.
What would I be trying to demonstrate? The immortality of the soul, for example? When I possess the whole teaching of the resurrection of the dead and the Resurrection of Christ, why should I borrow arguments from Plato or Aristotle? At most, I could mention their ideas for historical purposes, to explain what the philosophers believed. But I should not use them to establish the immortality of the soul. After all—and do not forget this—the expression “immortality of the soul” is not scriptural. The Greeks spoke about the immortality of the soul. Holy Scripture does not, because the soul does not possess immortality in itself. The Apostle Paul says of God: “Who alone possesses immortality.”
If the soul has immortality, it is because God wills it. If He did not will it, the soul would return to nothingness. The soul has no self-existent immortality. God alone is immortal by His own nature. The Apostle Paul tells you this in his Epistle to Timothy: “Who alone possesses immortality.” In any case, we should not use things that are unsuitable. There may sometimes be certain audiences that want a little decorative coating, so to speak—a smearing of philosophy here, a little literature there, a little poetry, and similar embellishments—because these things please the audience.
Perhaps someone may occasionally use something of that kind, but he should move on quickly. Will I persuade the audience through such things, or through the presence of the Holy Spirit? You understand, then, how one who offers the Word of God must proceed. Of course, you may ask, “Does the Apostle Paul not use reason?” Yes, he does. But he does not use it to construct logical proofs in the manner of philosophy. He uses ordinary common sense—the “common sense,” as foreigners call it. This is what every person appeals to when trying to help another understand...
something that lies outside even common sense. You may ask, “Are there really people who lack common sense?” Most people do. Most people act contrary to common sense. For example, if I finish my talk at seven and must be here by seven-thirty, yet some people remain behind and do not leave, are they not being unreasonable? Since I will not be able to see them, why do they stay? The time is over, and I cannot see them. What is the point? Is there any hope that I shall see them? There is none. It is unreasonable. Of course, this is one of the milder forms of irrational behavior. There are other kinds that make you tear your hair out—truly tear your hair out. In such cases, of course, we shall use common sense. This is what the Apostle Paul does as well.
In a great many passages of his epistles, he uses common sense. Would you like an example from Christ Himself? Here is one from Paul, and then one from Christ. What does Paul say? “Every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.” Is not every house built by someone? It did not simply appear on its own. And when we speak of a house, we mean a structure containing features that reveal rational design. When you see a building with a window and a door, you say that it did not make itself, because the presence of a door and a window shows that it was rationally designed, so that someone could enter the building and receive light through the window. And the Lord says: Which of you, when his child is hungry...
and says, “Father, give me an egg,” will give him a scorpion? Or when he says, “Give me bread,” will give him a stone? Look at these arguments. What father would do that? What kind of argument is this? It is an argument from common sense. A father can draw the conclusion for himself. The Lord says: “You who are parents know how to give good gifts to your children. If your child says, ‘Father, give me an egg,’ will you give him a scorpion? Would you ever do that? No. How much more, then, will God the Father give you good things—good things.” If you human beings think in a good and loving way about such matters, how much more does God think what is good.
So, my dear friends, we may use reason—ordinary common sense. That is not forbidden. But to use arguments drawn from human reasoning in order to prove the existence of God, the destiny of man, and so forth, is going too far, I think. Let us not mix philosophy with theology. Theology stands on its own. And if we wish to convince others, we will not convince them with such arguments, but through the presence of the Holy Spirit. Did the Apostle Peter speak so astonishingly on the day of Pentecost that three thousand people came to believe? No, my dear friends. His words alone were not so extraordinary as to explain...
...such a catch, such a harvest of three thousand souls. What, then, stood behind the Apostle Peter’s words and worked within his hearers? The Holy Spirit. Let us go a little further. “And again: He who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a pledge.” And again. This phrase “and again” means: “I am taking individual passages from Paul’s epistles,” as Saint Cyril says, “to tell you what concerns the Holy Spirit.” We are not explaining everything. “And again: He who raised Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” And again, and so forth. Let us remain with this passage. Thank you.
“He who raised Jesus from the dead.” Who raised Christ? My dear friends, we have the expression that Christ raises Himself. He Himself says, “I have authority to lay down My life and to take it up again.” He means His human life: to lay it down and take it up again. That is, to die and rise again. It is the same thing. Elsewhere we find the expression that the Father raised the Son. Do you know what these different expressions show? They show that the Resurrection of Christ was the work of the Triune God: of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The wording of a single passage does not express the whole truth. That is why we have these passages that appear to contradict one another. In reality, however, they complement one another and reveal a single truth: the Father raises Jesus, Jesus raises Himself, and the Holy Spirit raises Jesus.
Each expression is used at a particular point in Holy Scripture according to the purpose of the sacred author. Here, then, it says: “He who raised Jesus from the dead”—the One who raised Jesus from the dead—“will give life.”
You know, the passage I am quoting is Romans, chapter 8, verse 11: “He will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” Now pay attention, my dear friends. While we live, our purpose and our work are to become spiritual people—that is, to acquire the Holy Spirit, to become a dwelling place, a temple of the Holy Spirit. This is the ultimate purpose of the spiritual life. Do you want to see from the passage I have read that this truly is the ultimate purpose? What does the Apostle Paul say here in the passage cited by Saint Cyril? What does he say?
He who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will also give life to—that is, will raise—your mortal bodies because His Spirit dwells in you. “Through His Spirit who dwells in you,” and so forth: for the sake of the Holy Spirit who is within you. Which Holy Spirit? The text says, “His Spirit,” meaning the Spirit of the Son and also of the Father. It means the Holy Spirit, because, as you remember, we said that the Holy Spirit is called both the Spirit of the Father and the Spirit of the Son. It is the same Holy Spirit. These are simply the many different expressions that are used. Saint Cyril discusses this point specifically in his preceding catechesis, the sixteenth.
Because the Holy Spirit dwells within you—because He abides in you—the Father will raise your bodies. But He will raise them to eternal life, for sinners too will be raised, though theirs will not be a resurrection to eternal life, but to condemnation. When, then, will I be raised to eternal life? When I depart from this present world having made myself—my body and my spirit—a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. So here is what I told you: this is the ultimate purpose of the ascesis of the virtues and of avoiding the vices.
This is the purpose: to become a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Someone may say to his spiritual father, “You know, Father, I take care not to steal or tell lies, but I cannot give up dances and entertainments. I simply cannot. So please show me some understanding, because I enjoy these things.” Or a young woman may tell me, “I cannot avoid fashion. I want to dress as fashion dictates,” and so on and so forth. Someone else may say something similar. What, then, would the question be? My daughter, my young friend, my dear fellow human being...
...in view of what you are saying, I ask you: will you ultimately succeed in possessing the Holy Spirit? Certainly not. But if you do not ultimately receive the Holy Spirit, then what is the point of managing not to lie or steal while still living a worldly life? What is the point? Let us understand, then, why we live, why we uproot the vices and plant the virtues. The purpose is to become spiritual people, to acquire the Spirit of God. How can we know whether we have the Spirit of God? How can we know? By the way we think and the way we feel. If we think according to Christ...
...if we feel according to Christ, and if we act according to Christ, then we have the Holy Spirit. That is why the question is not merely what I do, but who I am—who I am. At some moment I may do something wrong. I may grieve the Holy Spirit, yet He may not depart from me. Saint Cyril will speak of this; if not today, then, God willing, we will speak of it next time: “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit does not depart merely because I have grieved Him. I can bring Him joy again if I correct myself. So the question is not so much what I do as who I am. As for what I do, I assure you that very many people say—wrongly, of course, because they lack self-knowledge—that they have not committed the usual catalogue of major offenses: “I have not stolen, I have not murdered, I have not committed adultery, I have not betrayed anyone.” Those four: “I have not stolen, I have not murdered, I have not committed adultery, I have not betrayed anyone.” But, my brother, if you had done those things, you would deserve to be put in chains. You would deserve prison. Is that what defines you as a Christian? The question is not what you have or have not done. Who are you? Who are you? How do you think? How does that faculty we call thought operate within you? In other words, what is your whole manner of thinking? That is what “mindset” means: the way I think. And so forth. For this reason, when a person has the Spirit of God...
...and dies, the Spirit of God does not depart from his relics. Today I saw a funeral procession pass by; I saw it from my window. If that person—I do not know whether it was a man or a woman—had the Spirit of God, then the Spirit of God remains in the person’s relics. In the relics. That is why the relics of the saints work miracles. At the same time, the Spirit remains with the soul in Paradise. Though body and soul are separated, the Spirit of God unites them. Then comes the resurrection of the dead unto eternal life. And now, my dear friends, we come to paragraph 33 of the same Catechesis, the seventeenth: “That the Holy Spirit has real existence, and lives, and speaks, and foretells.”
“This has often been said in what preceded; and Paul writes plainly to Timothy: ‘Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith,’” and so forth. “We see these things not only in the schisms before our time, but also in those of our own day, for the error of the heretics is varied and takes many forms.” Saint Cyril now turns to another point. You see that this exposition and analysis gives us, so to speak, a comprehensive view of the subject. We discover aspects and details that enrich our knowledge of everything concerning the Holy Spirit.
Here he will say that the Holy Spirit has real existence, lives, speaks, and foretells, as Saint Cyril says he has already explained above. In other words, the Holy Spirit exists, He lives, He speaks, and He also foretells. Saint Cyril will now cite several passages that support these teachings: that the Holy Spirit exists, that He foretells, and so forth. He begins with a passage from the First Epistle to Timothy, chapter 4, verse 1: “Now the Spirit expressly says.” So this is the first point: the Spirit says. Therefore, He speaks.
You will remember that Saint Cyril told us from the very beginning that the Holy Spirit is a person. He is not an impersonal power of God, but a person. And therefore, as a person, He exists, lives, speaks, acts, and prophesies. He possesses self-awareness; that is what it means to be a person. A person cannot be understood apart from self-awareness. And one person is not confused with another. The Mystery, of course, is that while the essence is one, the persons are three. This is the Mystery of the Holy Trinity, beyond our reach and beyond our understanding. Here, then, the Apostle Paul tells Timothy that the Holy Spirit expressly says that in later times...
...in later times, some will depart from the sound faith.
What are these “later times”? We must always explain this, because terms such as “last,” “later,” “later time,” and so forth always require a particular interpretation. Here Paul is not speaking specifically of the very end—the final period when the end of history draws near. This does not exclude that meaning; indeed, it reinforces it. But by “later times” he means the period shortly after the writing of his epistle to Timothy.
The Apostle Paul himself says to the priests of Ephesus at Miletus: “I know this.” How do you know it, Saint Paul? The Holy Spirit says it. “I know that after my departure savage wolves will enter the flock.” When, then, are these “later times”? In the passage at Miletus, where he speaks to the priests, they mean “after my departure.” Here, in his words to Timothy, they mean shortly after the epistle was written. Therefore, he is not speaking only of the very last times, but of something that was to happen then. The proof is that Saint Cyril himself...
...says that we see this happening. We see it because schisms, heresies, and the error of heresy also exist among us. Thus the words of the Holy Spirit are indeed vindicated. So what does the Holy Spirit say? Let me dwell on this once more. He says that some will depart from the faith—from the right and sound faith. The words “right” and “sound,” especially “sound,” are expressions used by Paul. Elsewhere he speaks of “the sound faith,” again in an epistle to Timothy and again concerning such matters. These, my dear friends, are people who abandon the faith; and the Holy Spirit foretells that they will depart from the right faith.
Why, my brother, would you depart from the right faith? Is there any reason to do so? What gives rise to apostasy—to this “departure”? Listen and learn, so that none of us may find ourselves in the realm of apostasy. Is that possible? It is among the most likely dangers. “How do you know that, Geronta?” Let me tell you; it is very simple. Let me point out certain people to you. Are you alarmed? Do not be alarmed. The Apostle Paul himself says to the priests of Ephesus at Miletus: “Even some from among you priests will be the ones who depart from the right faith.” Consider that. There it is.
What is it that makes a person want to depart from the right faith—from the sound faith, as Paul calls it elsewhere? First, it happens when someone is ruled by egotism and pride and cultivates rationalism, believing that he will understand something in the Word of God better if he imposes his own interpretation upon it. How dangerous this is! This is a common characteristic of all heretics: they want to understand with their own intellect what the sound faith sets forth,
and they do not turn to the interpretation that is itself preserved within Holy Scripture. “I want to understand the doctrine of the Holy Trinity for myself,” such a person says. “Why should it be beyond explanation?” Listen: human rationalism refuses to admit that there are things which cannot be explained. It wants to get around the inexplicable and explain it. And so what did all those men—Arius and Sabellius—do? I mention Sabellius because Saint Cyril will speak of him a little later, though not today, and has already mentioned him before. They all devised some explanation of how God can be Trinitarian while the essence is one. Thus Sabellius,
in this case, taught Son-Fatherhood and the coalescing of the divine Persons. What does that mean? He said that God is one and the person is one, but that in the Old Testament this one person appears as the Father, in the New Testament the same person appears as the Son, and in the Church, during the age of the Church, He appears as the Holy Spirit. Why do you say these things, Sabellius? Because you want to explain what the Church sets forth as something unsurpassable and inexplicable—a Mystery. And what about Arius? He says, “What exactly is the Son? Does the Son exist within the Godhead and thereby make something more than the Father—a second person? No.”
“He is a created being. God is one.” All these men want to safeguard the truth that God is one. Macedonius says, “No, the Holy Spirit does not exist as a person.” Then what is He? “He is an energy of God.” This is also what the Millennialists say. You know, the Millennialists do the very same thing. They want to safeguard the truth that God is one, and they fall into the same sin. What they teach is heresy—grave heresy—because a heresy concerning the divinity is grave indeed.
Therefore, those who think in this way are already on the road toward heresy whenever they put their rationalism first in an attempt to understand something. Second, what else causes a person to depart from the sound faith? The Fathers say that an evil way of life gives birth to evil doctrines. Nothing could be truer. And the reverse is also true: evil doctrines give birth to an evil way of life. What does this mean? Some people find the Gospel harsh and burdensome. Indeed, I do not know whether anyone among you, even here where we are gathered, may say the same. Let him not wrong himself. I myself am neither lenient nor harsh.
The Word of God is being set before you, always supported by Holy Scripture—always by Holy Scripture. Let no one say that these things are harsh. God forbid! God forbid! Let him not wrong himself. Yet a person may want to live a more relaxed life. There are two ways in which someone can do this. The first is to say, “I cannot attain to these things. I cannot attain to them. I cannot. I transgress what the Gospel teaches. I want to live in sin, and that is the end of it. I accept the Gospel, but I cannot measure up to it.” That is one way, and there is hope that such a person may be saved—great hope that he may be saved. Perhaps tomorrow you will attain to these things and embrace them; perhaps tomorrow life itself will teach you.
Indeed, it is said that those who are not taught by words are taught by the saying, “Where words fail, the rod falls.” Because God loves mankind and offers man His word, if you refuse to accept it, He will bring you to your senses with the rod. You will receive a few blows, a little chastening, so that you may come to your senses. And in this way, many people truly do come to their senses. The other case is when I call the grapes I cannot reach unripe. “They are sour grapes.” Do you not remember Aesop’s fable? Once, it says, a fox could not reach the grapes on a vine to eat them. In her pride, she turned away scornfully, saying to herself, “They are sour grapes.”
She walked away contemptuously: “They are unripe; they are not fit to eat—sour grapes.” When you turn the sweet grape of the Gospel into a sour one, you malign it. What are you doing? You change it. And what do you change? Because you want your life to remain as it is—sinful. You do not have the strength to say, “I am living sinfully,” so you change the doctrines of the faith and say, “The Gospel does not say that,” or, “What does ‘unclean’ even mean?” Take fasting, for example—a very simple and extremely common example. You cannot fast. Then say, “I cannot fast.” But if you ask, “Where is that written?” and then say,
“It is not what enters a person that defiles him, but what comes out,” that has nothing at all to do with fasting. The issue at that time was that the disciples were rubbing the heads of grain in their hands—without washing their hands—and eating the fresh kernels, for the grain was already ripe for harvest. The Pharisees objected that they were eating with unwashed hands. But this was a tradition of the rabbis; it was not found in Scripture. And the Lord said to them, “Why are you surprised?” In other words, is a person defiled—does he become unclean—if he eats something with unwashed hands?
It is not the food a person eats with his hands that makes him unclean, but what comes out of his heart. Tell me, what do these words have to do with fasting? And yet people are ready to distort Holy Scripture, to malign Holy Scripture and everything connected with fasting. Then let them hear the answer: “Whoever breaks one of these commandments,” says Christ—breaks it, that is, abolishes and destroys it—“will be called least in the Kingdom of God.” That means he will be of no account; he will not enter the Kingdom of God. This is a distortion. What has an evil way of life done here? It has distorted the doctrinal teaching of the Word of God. An evil way of life has done this. The same is true of sexual immorality. And if you tell such a person that this matter has theological dimensions, as the Apostle Paul explains in his First Epistle to the Corinthians, he replies, “Come on—what is all this?”
He distorts it. “You know, these are natural needs,” he says, “and a young person has this need and that need; before settling down, he must live in such and such a way.” There are endless theories and psychological explanations, poured out by the shovelful. What are you doing here? You are distorting the Gospel. Thus, a corrupt way of life creates a counterfeit Gospel. In essence, however, whether it is the first case or the second—whether I am corrupt but still acknowledge the Gospel, while remaining apart and far from it, or whether I am corrupt and corrupt the Gospel as well—I still depart; I remain far away. So what does apostasy mean? Either through my reasoning I reveal this apostasy, attempting to give rational explanations and thereby arriving at strange and peculiar teachings—that is, falling into heresy—or I reveal it through my way of life...
However the matter stands, the point is that in the end I depart. In other words, I am in a state of apostasy. And this is a very, very great and serious matter, my dear friends. For this reason, we must be careful and refrain from sin. First of all, we must have humility and accept whatever the Word of God says; then we must not sin. And if we do sin, we must quickly come to metanoia, to repentance. Then there is no possibility of our departing from the Gospel, as it says here: “In later times some will depart from the faith.” And what is it that people love? The Apostle Paul says this again—I believe he says it to Timothy—that people will love
—I will tell you what they love; he says it a little further on, and I will mention it both in connection with this passage and with the one I am about to quote—they want to hear pleasant things. Figuratively speaking, these pleasant things tickle their ears. Does not beautiful music, for example, tickle the ears? Whether that music is of a kind that stirs up the passions is another matter, but it tickles the ears. Paul uses the verb “to tickle.” Do you remember? He says that they have “itching ears”—that is how it is translated—because they listen to these theories. Whose theories? Those of the Gnostics. When the Apostle Paul writes these things to Timothy, he has the Gnostics in mind.
You may tell me that the Gnostics existed three centuries before Christ, and I will answer: Yes, but in Paul’s time they had not yet entered the Church. Paul foretells that they will enter the Church. That is, either they will enter it or they will become Christians, but they will bring their Gnostic ideas with them, and in the end they will find themselves far from the sound faith. Do you remember what he also says to Timothy? “They will forbid Holy Matrimony”; he is referring to the Gnostics. And do you remember what else he says there? “Do not touch; do not taste.” Again, he is referring to the Gnostics.
Because the Gnostic phenomenon arose somewhat later—later, that is, though Paul and John were still alive—John addresses the matter of the Gnostics in his epistles, not in his Gospel, but in his epistles. In any case, the Apostle Paul has the Gnostics in mind and says that they have found themselves far from the sound faith. I scarcely need to tell you, of course, that Gnostic ideas also survive secretly within our own Christian life. I have spoken to you about this before, but I will not give further examples now. I will say only that Gnosticism has been revived. It never died—never died—but in our age it has undergone a particular revival.
It has taken on new elements, but its basic lines and teachings always remain the same as they were in antiquity. And so, if you read—do not read—a Gnostic book, such as the one by Deor, the Mexican, and see how he interprets theosis, the presence of Christ, and the Most Holy Theotokos, you will say, “Can people really possess such a mad imagination?” Yes. The danger of Gnosticism lay—and still lies—in this: it does not reject the terminology of theology and Holy Scripture. It does not reject such terms as Christ, Theotokos—that is, Mary the Theotokos—or the Eucharist.
The Eucharist. It rejects nothing. It gives everything a different meaning. That is the danger—the enormous danger. Be careful: here in Larissa we have a Gnostic center, a center for Gnostic studies.
And all those other things—karate, yoga, and the like—are an introduction. Of course, they are Buddhist; they come from India, and so on. But in essence, they serve as an introduction to Gnosticism. Gnosticism...
It contains Buddhism and other things; it contains some Christianity too—a little of everything, a little of everything. We must be very careful, my dear friends. If someone you know—a friend or relative—goes to these Gnostic centers and places, tell him to leave quickly. Let him leave quickly. If he is humble, he will leave. If he is ruled by egotism, he will remain, and then, as the Apostle Paul says, “he will go from bad to worse.” This is what is meant by the words, “The Holy Spirit expressly says,” and so on. Of course, because the Apostle Paul does not use all the passages from Paul... We said this earlier—forgive me—I mean Saint Cyril does not use all the passages from the Apostle Paul. There is another similar, parallel passage. But I will not dwell on it, because it is very long. We would need an hour to examine it a little more closely.
It is what Paul again says to Timothy, in the Second Epistle to Timothy: “Know this, that in the later times, in the last days”—here he uses the word “last”—“in the last days people will be lovers of self, reckless, disobedient to parents, traitors,” and many other things. But who says that things will be this way in the last days? He is speaking, of course, about the Christian people, the Christian world. For it would make no sense to say that twentieth-century Indians, as Buddhists—Indians understood as Buddhists—or Africans, as idolaters, would be this way and that way and the other. What meaning would that have?
When he says that people will be this way and that way, he means Christians—and that is the lowest possible state. Who says these things? The Holy Spirit. What is the Apostle Paul speaking? Prophecies. And who is speaking through them? The Holy Spirit. Since I mentioned this without explaining it—for, as I told you, this passage would require a very lengthy analysis—I will say only one thing. If you read this in the Second Epistle to Timothy, you will see our own age reflected there, both in the older generation and in the young. You will be overcome with deep sorrow when you see it. But if you look carefully, the first description...
What follows includes about ten more descriptions. What will Christians be like? The first concerns self-love, the root passion: “Men will be lovers of themselves.” The passage is rich in detail. All the other sins—disobedience to parents, betrayal, recklessness, and everything else; people being irreconcilable, having no respect for anything sacred or holy—and these things characterize our age, forgive me, all spring from a single source called self-love. It is no accident that the Apostle Paul places self-love first. He does so to reveal the fountainhead from which that whole chain flows...
the whole chain of that sorrowful and wretched condition. And our age, more than any other, is an age of self-love. Do you know what makes man self-loving as a social being—not in isolation, but as a person living within society? What makes him self-loving? Prosperity. Prosperity. Did you hear that? Prosperity. People say that capitalist systems—take care, I am not engaging in politics or sociology here—are systems of self-love, because they care about nothing except how each person can make money. Is that true or not?
And if anyone concludes from this that I belong to some political camp, that I am a socialist or anything else, take care: he will be very far from the truth. God forbid. I am simply offering a criticism. Indeed, when you want to become rich because society gives you the opportunity to do so, it means this: you will become rich at someone else’s expense. The Fathers of our Church also say this; it is well known. What, then, does this mean? It means that you are ruled by self-love. This is how self-love is cultivated. Of course, you may ask me, “Is self-love not also cultivated under other, socialist systems?” My beloved, know this once and for all: inwardly, man is self-loving, while outwardly he is social.
Whenever anyone finds the opportunity, whatever political system he may live under, he will express his self-love in one way or another. He will steal, embezzle, and lie, because he is self-loving. Strip man of all these systems, and what remains is the self-loving man. When everyone looks after his own comfort and succeeds in securing it—and that is what we call prosperity—then the process also works in reverse. A political system leads to prosperity, and self-love expresses itself through that prosperity; then prosperity, in turn, shapes the new citizens...
to be self-loving, to love themselves. My beloved, a man cares for nothing but his own belly, his own pocket, his own little car, and so forth. This is a dreadful self-love. The sense of social responsibility has essentially died. And when that dies, patriotism dies, great benefactors and donors disappear—everything dies. This is the chain of traits that the Apostle Paul records there, where the Holy Spirit reveals what people will be like at the Last Things, the eschata. That is all for tonight, my beloved.

Ξέρετε, αυτό που σας λέγω... Είναι στην προς Ρωμαίους, 8ο κεφάλαιο, 11ο χωρίον. «Ζωοποιήσει καὶ τὰ θνητὰ ὑμῶν σώματα διὰ τοῦ ἐνοικοῦντος αὐτοῦ Πνεύματος ἐν ὑμῖν». Μάλιστα. Προσέξτε, αγαπητοί. Όσο ζούμε, σκοπός και έργον μας είναι να γίνουμε πνευματικοί άνθρωποι, δηλαδή να αποκτήσουμε το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, δηλαδή να γίνουμε κατοικητήριον, ναός του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Αυτός είναι ο τελικός σκοπός της πνευματικής ζωής. Θέλετε να δείτε ότι αυτός είναι ο τελικός σκοπός από το χωρίο που σας διάβασα; Τι λέει ο Απόστολος Παύλος εδώ, ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, ο Απόστολος Παύλος; Τι λέει;
«τα εισερχόμενα δεν βλάπτουν, αλλά τα εξερχόμενα», που δεν έχει αυτό καμία σχέση με τη νηστεία. Ήταν η περίπτωση τότε που οι μαθηταί τρίβανε με τα χέρια τους, άπλυτα χέρια, τρίβανε τα στάχια και τρώγανε το φρέσκο αυτό το σιτάρι, έτοιμο για να θεριστεί πια ήταν, και η παρατήρηση των Φαρισαίων ότι τρώγουν με άπλυτα χέρια, που ήταν παράδοσις των Ραβίνων και δεν ήταν στη Γραφή αυτό. Και ο Κύριος τους είπε: «Γιατί παραξενεύεστε;». Δηλαδή θα λερωθεί κανείς, θα γίνει κοινός, δηλαδή θα λερωθεί, αν φάει κάτι με άπλυτα χέρια;
Εκείνο που λέει πάλι στον Τιμόθεο, στη Δευτέρα προς Τιμόθεον, που λέγει εκεί ότι: «Τοῦτο να ξέρεις, ότι στους κατοπινούς καιρούς, ἐν ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις» —εδώ χρησιμοποιεί το «ἔσχατος»—, σε εσχάτους καιρούς οι άνθρωποι θα είναι φίλαυτοι, προπετεῖς, γονεῦσιν ἀπειθεῖς, προδόται, τούτα, έχει πολλά. Αλλά ποιος το λέγει αυτό, ότι στους εσχάτους καιρούς τα πράγματα θα είναι έτσι; Και εννοεί βέβαια τον χριστιανικό λαό, τον χριστιανικό κόσμο. Διότι θα ήταν αδιανόητο πράγμα να πει ότι οι Ινδοί του 20ού αιώνα θα είναι ως βουδιστές —εννοείται οι Ινδοί ως βουδιστές—, οι Αφρικανοί ως ειδωλολάτρες θα είναι τέτοιοι, τέτοιοι, τέτοιοι. Τι έννοια θα είχε;
Εκείνης της θλιβεράς, του θλιβερού καταντήματος. Και η εποχή μας, όσο σε καμιά άλλη εποχή, είναι φίλαυτος. Και ξέρετε τι κάνει τον άνθρωπο φίλαυτο σαν κοινωνική ύπαρξη, όχι σαν μόνο του, σαν κοινωνική ύπαρξη ενταγμένο μέσα σε μια κοινωνία; Τι κάνει τον άνθρωπο φίλαυτο; Η ευημερία. Ευημερία. Το ακούσατε; Η ευημερία. Λένε ότι τα καπιταλιστικά —προσέξτε, δεν κάνω ούτε πολιτική ούτε κοινωνιολογία, τίποτα— λένε ότι τα καπιταλιστικά συστήματα είναι φίλαυτα, διότι δεν κοιτάζει τίποτα, αλλά πώς θα βγάλει λεφτά ο καθένας. Είναι ή δεν είναι αλήθεια;
