Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets the name “Christian,” first given to the disciples at Antioch, as the new name prophetically promised by God through Isaiah and bestowed through the Holy Spirit. The Church Fathers describe “Christian” as the highest title and blessing, while insisting that believers must embody the name through lives consecrated to God. Christian moral teaching must remain grounded in Orthodox doctrine, because the Church is founded both christologically and pneumatologically, and her mysteries are accomplished by the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus Christ.

We are still studying the text of Saint Cyril, in his Seventeenth Catechetical Lecture, which concerns the Holy Spirit, and we have reached paragraph 29. Before we continue, however, I owe you something I promised last time. In paragraph 28 we came upon the following phrase, and I told you that I could not remember on the spot where this was written in Isaiah. This also gives us an opportunity to say a little more about Saint Cyril’s words: “When he saw Paul of Tarsus, a fellow laborer in the struggle, he brought him to Antioch.”

“After they had taught and gathered the Church together, it came to pass that the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch,” and so forth. “It was, I believe, the Holy Spirit who bestowed upon the faithful the new name foretold by the Lord.” It was in Antioch that the disciples received the name Christians; there they were called Christians. We know, of course, that this is mentioned in the eleventh chapter of the Book of Acts. But Saint Cyril also alludes to the prophecy when he says: “It was, I believe, the Holy Spirit who bestowed upon the faithful the new name foretold by the Lord.” In other words, this was the work of the Holy Spirit, who had foretold that Christians would be given a new name. And what is that name? The name Christian. This prophecy, which is found in Isaiah, was interpreted by early Fathers such as Saint Ignatius of Antioch, and it also concerns the central significance of the name Christian itself. It is therefore worthwhile to say a few words about this subject, because we must know what our name means if we are to live up to it.

Moreover, we must not lower or conceal this name—the name Christian—but wear it as a helmet in which we glory. We know that when the Apostle Paul was making his defense before King Agrippa, Agrippa was so deeply impressed by Paul that, for a moment, he said to him—with a certain note of irony, of course, since, as I explained last time, the pagans had given the name Christian in mockery—“In a short time you persuade me to become a Christian.” Just a little more, and you will make me a Christian. Just a little more. But the Apostle Paul, without the slightest irony, replied, “I would pray to God” that you might become what I am—that is, a Christian.

I am an Apostle; I have taken up the Cross of Christ, I am persecuted, and at this very moment I stand before you in chains. But may you never suffer persecution or imprisonment. That is why I pray that you may become a Christian, “except for these chains.” And the Apostle Paul raised his hand—as public speakers did in those days—and his chains became visible, the chain around his wrist. Surely he gestured toward it as he said, “Except for these chains.” In other words, may you never have to wear chains. It is a beautiful scene, one that can be appreciated only by someone with the spiritual sensitivity to enter into it.

Such a person can appreciate Paul’s marvelous soul, his greatness of soul: how he spoke, how he thought, and how he faced every circumstance. The Apostle Peter, my beloved, emphasizes the same thing in the fourth chapter of his First Epistle. He says: “Let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evildoer.” Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, or an evildoer. “Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this name.”

If a person suffers, not for breaking the ordinary criminal law, but because he is a Christian, then he should regard this as his glory. Did you hear that? “Let him glorify God”—let him give glory to God—“in this name,” that is, in the name Christian. Thus, it is a glory for Christians to be Christians, even though, as I repeat, the name Christian was originally given in mockery. Saint Ignatius of Antioch, an Apostolic Father, directly reflects the teaching of the Holy Apostles. He gives a very direct interpretation of the prophecy of Isaiah to which Saint Cyril of Jerusalem alludes: that God had indeed foretold that He would give Christians, the faithful of Christ, a new name. “Let us therefore become worthy,” Saint Ignatius says in his Epistle to the Magnesians—and for those who read the Fathers, I should note that this is found in the longer recension—“let us therefore become worthy of the name we have received. For whoever is called by another name that he places above this one does not belong to God.”

He is saying that if anyone wishes to bear some title higher than the name Christian—Freemason, Mason, Rotarian, or whatever else—then, in this respect, he does not belong to God. This is wrong; at that point you do not belong to God. You cannot place any name above the name you already bear, the name Christian. If you take other names, meaning other titles or capacities, they must all remain beneath the name Christian. Saint Ignatius explains why: “For he has not accepted the prophecy that speaks concerning us.” He has not accepted the prophecy that refers to us. And what is that prophecy?

It is found in chapter 62, verse 2, and chapter 65, verse 15. What does it say? “For you shall be called by a new name, which the Lord Himself shall name, and you shall be a holy people.” They will be called by a new name, a name which the Lord Himself will give them, and this people will be holy. Saint Ignatius continues: “This was first fulfilled in Syria.” It was first brought to fulfillment in Syria. “For in Antioch the disciples were called Christians, as Paul and Peter…”

“…were laying the foundation of the Church.” For it was there that the disciples came to be called Christians, while Peter and Paul were laying the foundation of the Church in Antioch. What does Isaiah say? Isaiah says the following; I will read it to you. Saint Ignatius quotes it from Isaiah, and now I will read Isaiah himself: “And He shall call you by your new name, which the Lord Himself shall name.” Please, follow the course of this story very carefully. It is awe-inspiring. You know that God’s chosen people bore a name: Israel. The name Israel was given directly by God. How was this name given? Listen. Abram was called Abram, and then he was renamed Abraham. I will not dwell further on that change of name. Then came Isaac and Jacob. After Jacob’s conflict with his brother Esau, when Jacob took the birthright from him, God blessed what had happened. Perhaps you wonder why. It was because Esau was unworthy.

The New Testament calls Esau, if I remember correctly, a fornicator on two occasions—a fornicator in the spiritual sense—because, it says, he treated his birthright with contempt. He attached no importance to becoming the forefather of the Messiah, in fulfillment of God’s great promise to Abraham. He simply did not care. “Oh, never mind all that,” he said, as we might put it in our everyday speech. So God rejected him and permitted Jacob to deceive Esau. Yet because God is also just, He punished Jacob. It is like a soldier who performs a heroic deed contrary to the orders of his superior.

Here is the curious thing: during wartime, that soldier is decorated for his bravery, yet he is also sentenced to a month in prison because he acted on his own authority. A medal and imprisonment. A medal and imprisonment. This is what happened to Jacob. God approved what Jacob had done, but God cannot accept injustice. Therefore He punished Jacob through his twenty years of self-imposed exile, through all the hardship he endured in a foreign land, and by allowing him to receive deception in return for deception, when his father-in-law Laban deceived him.

Laban was the brother of Jacob’s mother, Rebekah. He did not give Jacob Rachel, the younger daughter whom Jacob loved and who, Scripture says, was very beautiful. Instead, he gave him the elder daughter, Leah, of whom Holy Scripture notes that her eyes were rather weak and that she was unattractive. I will not say more about that now. The point is that Jacob says to his father-in-law, “But…” Do not ask me to go into it further; the story of how he was deceived is a long one. We once covered all of this in a series of talks—a whole series of very fine subjects. But Jacob paid for the deception by which he had obtained the birthright from his father. You see how just God is. His father-in-law then said to him, “Well, you see, our custom is…” The question was which daughter, the first or the second. “Here it is our custom to marry off the elder daughter first.”

Let me take this opportunity to say: do not wait until your eldest daughter is married before allowing the younger one to marry. Let each marry when her turn and opportunity come, or you may end up with all your daughters unmarried. Pay attention to this point, please. So Laban continued: “If you also wish to take the younger daughter, you must work for me for as many years again.” In the end, Jacob remained and worked for twenty years. On Clean Monday, when we hear the Great Canon of Saint Andrew of Crete, we will hear how Jacob took two wives, laboring and suffering hardship, and so forth, in order to provide for them: Rachel, whom Saint Andrew of Crete describes as the personification of…

…theoria, divine contemplation, because Rachel bore no children, and Leah, who is the personification of praxis, the active ascetic life. “Theoria rests upon praxis,” the Fathers say. Saint Andrew interprets these things allegorically in a most beautiful way. Now, when Jacob was returning after twenty years, he came to the Jabbok, a tributary of the Jordan. They wished to cross the river, and eventually they all crossed over. For practical reasons, Jacob remained on the other side. Everyone else had crossed to this side, but he remained alone and slept there that night, beyond the tributary—not on this side, but on the other.

He had a dream. Someone came and wrestled with him. They wrestled and wrestled, and as they struggled, this mysterious figure said to him, “Let me go now, for day is breaking.” Jacob answered, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” This implies that Jacob had already realized that the one with whom he was wrestling was a divine person. Indeed, to put it plainly, this was God. In the light of the New Testament, if you will, it was God the Word (Logos), who would later become incarnate. He said to Jacob, “Let me go.” But Jacob answered, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” And then, strangely enough…

…Jacob prevailed over God; he prevailed over Him. Then God blessed Jacob and said to him, “From now on you shall no longer be called Jacob.” Do you know what Jacob means? It means “one who grasps the heel,” or “supplanter.” His father named him Jacob because, when Esau was born and came out first—they were twins—Jacob put out his hand, only his hand, and grasped Esau’s heel. Later, when the brothers quarreled, Esau said to him, “They were right to name you Jacob.”

“You supplanted me; you overthrew me and took away my birthright. They were right, then, to call you Jacob.” So Jacob means “supplanter.” God now changes his name and says, “You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel.” And Israel means “beloved.” For Jacob accepted the prophecy God had given to his grandfather Abraham: that they would continue his line and that the Messiah would come. Yes. Thus the people who would arise from the twelve Patriarchs received the name Israel. The people were called Israel, the Israelites, Israel. And so, this name…

…Israel—who gave it? God Himself. And now this same God says through the Prophet Isaiah, “I shall give you a new name. I gave you the first name, and now I shall give you the second.” This is what is so awe-inspiring; this is the astonishing point. “I shall give you the second name.” Who says this? God Himself, eight hundred years before Christ. And what is that name? The name Christian. The beautiful thing is that the name Christian appears in the New Testament. As I told you, the Apostle Paul uses it, and the Apostle Peter uses it. And Saint Ignatius interprets Isaiah’s prophecy concerning the new name that God would give His people.

Saint Ignatius was a direct successor of the Apostles, which is why he is called an Apostolic Father. We might say that he grew up in the hands of John the Evangelist, as well as those of the other Apostles. Thus we see that the name changes. We Christians are the New Israel; this is the new name. Yes, the pagans first used the name Christian mockingly, but God took it and bestowed it upon His new people. For God is free to act as He wills. He arranges things according to His own judgment. He does not Himself pronounce the name Christian; He allows the pagans to say it, and then God…

…adopts it. Therefore, when the Apostles and the early Church, who were filled with the Spirit of God, accepted this name, it means that they accepted it in the Holy Spirit. Thus the prophecy was fulfilled. Theodoret also interprets it in this way, saying: “God foretold this name; it was new and not old.” It is a new name, not an ancient one. Theodoret continues: “For after the appearing of the Master, Christ”—after His manifestation, His appearing, His coming—“those who believed were called Christians.”

“People use this title in place of every other word of praise. For when they wish to extol someone, after offering many praises they are accustomed to conclude: ‘He is truly a Christian.’” Theodoret says that the name Christian stands above every other word of praise. We may say, “You are brave, you are wise, you are intelligent, you are wonderful, you are illustrious,” and so on. But the name Christian is greater than every other praise. And when people wish to honor someone, after offering many words of praise,

they are accustomed to conclude, “He is truly a Christian.” He really is a true Christian. You see, then, how glorious this name became. “And when making an appeal, they are again accustomed to say: ‘Do it as a Christian.’” If they need to ask something of someone, they say, “Do it as a Christian”—not as a brave man, a king, a ruler, or a noble-hearted man. “Do what befits a Christian.” Do those things that are fitting for a Christian. “Thus this title is filled with praise and blessing.” The word “title” here simply means a name—a name filled with praise and blessing.

As Saint Ignatius says in his Letter to the Romans—not in the longer recension, but in the shorter one—“Let me not merely be called a Christian, but also be found to be one. For if I am found to be one, then I may also be called one.” In other words, let me not merely be called a Christian, but let me also be found to be a Christian. Let me be in reality what I am in name. And if I am truly found to be one, then I may rightly bear the name Christian. Thus, my dear friends, Christian is the greatest title in this world. Saint Ignatius likewise says in his letter to Saint Polycarp:

“A Christian has no authority over himself, but devotes himself to God.” Do you see how the term Christian is being used? I speak of its usage because this is from a very early period: Saint Ignatius was martyred in the year 107. “A Christian has no authority over himself, but devotes himself to God.” Since we have been baptized, we have been consecrated. One who is devoted to God occupies himself continually with the work of the One to whom he has been consecrated. A Christian, therefore, has no authority over himself. Saint John of Karpathos also says—and I have gathered a few testimonies for your sake—“It is a great thing for me that I have been given the name Christian.”

He paraphrases what the Lord says through Isaiah: “It is a great thing for me that I have been called a Christian,” just as the Lord says to me through the Prophet Isaiah, “It is a great thing for you to be called My servant”—or, if you prefer, “My child.”

So, as you can see, since today we are ashamed to say that we are Christians, we need, my dear friends, to be baptized anew, as it were, into this first and most glorious name of ours. And now, after this addition concerning the previous paragraph, which I had promised you—and on which we have also spent half an hour—

we come to the next paragraph, as I told you, paragraph twenty-nine.

“The Holy Spirit, who in agreement with the Father and the Son established the New Testament in the Catholic Church, freed us from the burdens of the Law that were so difficult to bear. I mean the rules concerning common and unclean foods, Sabbaths and new moons, circumcision, ritual sprinklings, and sacrifices. These were given for a time and contained a shadow of the good things to come; but when the truth arrived, they were rightly set aside.” The Holy Spirit, in agreement with the Father and the Son, establishes the New Testament in the Catholic Church—He constitutes it, that is, He founds it—and all the other ritual observances of the Old Testament,

such as clean and unclean animals, clean and unclean foods, new moons and first days of the month, Sabbaths, observances, and all such things, which were a shadow of the good things to come, were set aside. But I want to dwell on the first sentence of this short paragraph, so that we may comment on something very important. It is the opening line of the paragraph: “This Holy Spirit, who, in agreement with the Father and the Son, established the New Testament in the Catholic Church,” and so forth. This Holy Spirit, he says, who in agreement with the Father and the Son

is the One who founded—for “to establish” means “to found”—the New Testament in the Catholic Church. Pay attention, my brothers and sisters. First of all, when he says, “in agreement with the Father and the Son,” he means that the Holy Spirit is in complete accord with whatever the Father and the Son will. Why? Because the Holy Spirit is consubstantial—of one essence—with the Father and the Son. As I have told you before in these talks on the Holy Spirit, in God there is one will and one divine uncreated energy, because there is one divine essence.

This is the great Mystery: that we have three distinct Persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I have also told you that the Son has two energies: one belongs to His divinity and is also the energy of the Father and the Holy Spirit, while the other belongs to His human nature, His humanity. The same is true of His will. The Son has two wills: the divine will and the human will. The will of the Son as God is the same as that of the Father and the Holy Spirit. But He also possesses the will of human nature. For this reason, our Church has already defined dogmatically that the Son

has two wills and two energies. Conversely, our Church has condemned Monothelitism and Monoenergism. She has condemned both of these. You can see very clearly, then, that throughout his catechetical lectures Saint Cyril certainly includes practical matters and seeks to correct the conduct of his catechumens, yet in reality he never departs from the dogmatic foundation. I do not mean merely that he makes no dogmatic error. I mean that he makes abundant use of doctrine. And this is a very important lesson. Those who preach the Word of God, whether as teachers or from the pulpit, must understand that no matter how many practical things we say, the dogmatic element must never, ever be absent. For if it is absent, how would the morality we teach differ from philosophical, Buddhist, Masonic, or any other moral system? Everyone says that you should love your neighbor. Everyone says that you should be a good person. Yes, but what makes Christianity different? Christian morality is undoubtedly superior, but morality itself is not what distinguishes Christianity from other religions

or from other ethical teachings, whether religious or philosophical. What distinguishes Christianity is its dogmatic foundation. Yet this is precisely the element we have banished and removed from our daily lives, and even from our liturgical life. Doctrine no longer suits us even within worship. And without realizing it, we are doing the work of the Antichrist. For do you know what those who have marked a house for robbery do first? Let us say it is a country house they intend to rob. The first thing they do is cut the telephone line.

In the same way, the devil tries to weaken the dogmatic element solely in order to impose that monster called ecumenism. For if a person is firmly grounded in doctrine, he will never, ever submit to the worship of this monster, whose existence is continually being denounced, as you know. Yet I do not understand why others should make this denunciation while we ourselves should not. If you have noticed—and since I have understood this, you now understand it as well—the dogmatic element is always present in the preaching of the Word of God. I do not mean only when Saint Cyril guides us, since here he gives us...

as we have said, a course that we did not devise ourselves; he himself laid it out. But even with other subjects, when we simply preach the Word of God—a Sunday sermon, for example, or a homily on the Gospel—the dogmatic element is never absent. And I believe that the best way to resist ecumenism is for our Orthodox Christians to become firmly grounded in the doctrine of the Orthodox Faith. I trust you agree. But the most beautiful point in this sentence is that the Holy Spirit is the One who founds the New Testament in the Catholic Church. “Catholic” means the one Church spread throughout the whole world.

It does not mean the Latin, Roman Church. We mean the one, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church—the Orthodox Church. I say this, emphasize it, and underline it. Pay attention to it. What, then, does it mean that He comes to establish the New Testament in the Catholic Church? We can view this from two sides. First, who establishes the New Testament in the Church—or, better, who establishes the Church upon the earth? Undoubtedly, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit together.

At one time—not this year, perhaps last year; I do not remember—I told you that the Church has two aspects: the Christological and the pneumatological. We could say that the Church is “in Christ Jesus, in the Holy Spirit.” This phrase of the Apostle Paul is extraordinarily rich and cannot easily be rendered in simple words; it has to be explained. It means, precisely, that the Church has two foundations: Christ and the Holy Spirit. These are the two: the Christological and the pneumatological foundations of the Church. At every phrase—pardon me, at every step—here and in what follows, which I have underlined but which we will not discuss today because there is not enough time, he says everywhere:

“the Holy Spirit.” We said this last time as well. He does everything “in the name of Jesus Christ.” Never Christ without the Holy Spirit, for Christ said, “I will depart, and I will send you another Comforter.” The Holy Spirit acts in the Church on behalf of the Son. Thus we have these two foundations of the Church. The Holy Spirit, therefore, comes and establishes—founds—the Church, and keeps her firmly founded, because the Holy Spirit abides in the Church. Christ said it: “The Comforter, the Holy Spirit, will remain with you,” within the Church.

The Holy Spirit is the One who performs every sacred rite of our Church—all of them. All the Mysteries are accomplished by the Holy Spirit, who is therefore called the Holy Spirit, the Celebrant of the Mysteries, yet always in the name of Jesus Christ—always. Consequently, the Holy Spirit truly establishes the New Testament in the Catholic Church. That is the first point I wanted to make. The second is this: the New Testament is first an event, and only afterward a book. When we say “the New Testament,” what do we mean? When Christ spoke of “this cup” and said that He was establishing the New Testament, which New Testament did He mean?

Did He mean the book, the written Gospel? No. He meant the event of the New Testament. And what is that event? It is the establishment of a covenant—that is, an agreement between God and man—once again through blood. The Apostle Paul states clearly that there is no covenant without blood. What was the first covenant? The first covenant, the Old Testament, was established and founded through the blood of sacrifices. Now the New Testament is likewise established and founded through blood, but this time through the blood of the Son of God

and Man. So first we have the New Covenant as an event. We have a new covenant, a new agreement, just as people agree on something and afterward go to a notary to put it in writing. But the agreement comes before the written document. Here the Holy Spirit does both. Together with the Son—and, of course, the Father is also understood—He establishes the New Covenant; and secondly, He is the One who now records the New Covenant as a book. That is why the Holy Spirit was present in the sacred authors.

The sacred authors had the Holy Spirit when they wrote. When Matthew wrote, he had the Spirit of God; so did Luke, John, Paul, and Peter. That is why the books of the New Testament are inspired by God. What does “inspired by God” mean? It means inspired by God, by the Holy Spirit. So you see, my beloved, that when we take the New Testament into our hands, we must never handle it critically or, above all, contemptuously.

Perhaps we are in worship, and then, after reading it, we grow a little tired and toss it aside with a careless gesture. No, no. Then we take it into our hands to read it. We must never read it in a critical spirit, as though we were to pass judgment on the Word of God. Never. We must always remember that behind the sacred authors stands the Holy Spirit. And if I do not understand something, if it seems odd or strange to me, I need only pray to the Holy Spirit, and He will reveal it to me whenever He judges the time to be right. I assure you: if only we learn to wait, and if we take Holy Scripture into our hands not rashly or presumptuously but reverently, then every question we have will one day be answered. Believe me, one day it will be answered. Why? Because the Holy Spirit will give us the answer.

We must not say, “I accept this, but I do not accept that; this is right, but that is wrong in Holy Scripture.” Never. Only irreverent people pass judgment on the Word of God. A devout person receives it as it is. The Spirit of God wrote it. It is not Holy Scripture that must adapt itself to me; I must adapt myself to the Gospel, to Holy Scripture. Many people misinterpret the Scriptures and say strange things: “Where is that written? How can it be so? Why should it be so? I do not accept that.” God forbid! God forbid! So you see how beautifully Saint Cyril expresses it here. I shall read it again and then continue: “This Holy Spirit, who, in agreement with the Father…”

“…and the Son, established the New Covenant in the Catholic Church,” and so forth. I shall go a little further: “When an inquiry arose in Antioch concerning those who said that it was necessary to be circumcised and to keep the customs of Moses, Paul and Barnabas went up to Jerusalem. The Apostles who were there freed the whole inhabited world from all legal and typological observances by means of a written letter. Yet they did not claim for themselves the authority in this matter; rather, they openly confessed in writing: ‘For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden…’”

“‘…than these necessary things: that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality.’ Through what they wrote”—forgive me—“through what they wrote, this is made perfectly clear: although the document was written through men who were Apostles, the decree issued for the whole inhabited world belonged to the Holy Spirit; and Barnabas and Paul received it and confirmed it throughout the whole world.” I shall tell you the story in my own words, because you may already know it. It comes from the Book of Acts. A question arose in Antioch. Until then, the matter was taken for granted in the circles of Jerusalem: a Jew became a Christian. There was no question about that. A Jew became a Christian.

Before becoming a Christian, a Jew had already been circumcised. So no question arose. But pay attention: in Antioch the situation was different. Most people were not Jews; they were Gentiles, idolaters, who had come to believe in Christ. Indeed, I do not know who first preached the Gospel in Antioch. It is thought that the preaching was brought there by laypeople, perhaps merchants, as it was also brought to Cyprus and Rome. The Apostles arrived afterward. Thus many idolaters had become Christians there, along with Jews, of course. Then the following question arose: in order to become a Christian,

must one first pass through Judaism—that is, must one undergo circumcision? This was an extremely serious matter, because it was a question of salvation. Can a Gentile become a Christian and be saved as he is, or must he first pass through Judaism and continue to observe certain Jewish practices? That is why yesterday, as we were studying—and continue during these Sundays to study—the subject of Cornelius, I told you that it is of fundamental importance. When the Apostle Peter baptized him, those in Jerusalem demanded an explanation: “Why did you enter that house? Why did you baptize him?”

“I had a command from God. The six Jews who were with me are witnesses. And they received the manifestation of Pentecost just as we did, for they spoke in other tongues,” and so forth, there in the house of Cornelius. Then they were persuaded, became quiet, and said, “It appears that God also wills the Gentiles to be saved.” This matter is of immense importance. Now pay attention. The dispute broke out in Antioch, and they agreed to send a delegation to Jerusalem to ask, “What must we do?” Then the assembly known as the Apostolic Council took place.

The Apostles who were present in Jerusalem gathered together, along with the elders. This was the first appearance of the conciliar system for confirming a truth. Pay attention: the conciliar system. From then on, the Church would use this conciliar system. Later, of course, there would be the Fathers; at that time, however, there were the Apostles, and this is extremely important. When they reached their conclusion, they wrote it in a letter, and Barnabas and Paul took that letter with them. It had to be carried by official representatives of the Church. Moreover, both Paul and Barnabas were Jewish Christians.

This was extremely important, because if the letter had been entrusted to Gentile Christians, the Jews of Antioch would have questioned its authenticity when it arrived there. Therefore, its bearers had to be official representatives: Paul and Barnabas. You know how the letter was worded. The whole account I have given you, which Saint Cyril also describes, is meant to bring us to one particular point—and it is a crucial point. This crucial point is the following.

“Yet they did not claim for themselves the authority in this matter.” They did not give themselves—the Council itself—the authority in this affair, but openly confessed it in the letter they sent. What did they confess? Pay attention: “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden,” and so forth. This was the decision: it seemed good—it was judged good—by the Holy Spirit and by us that we issue this fourfold ruling. Please pay attention to the wording: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit.”

Who makes the decision? The Holy Spirit. Where does the authority of the decision lie? In the Holy Spirit. For the Apostolic Church of Jerusalem did not decide apart from the Holy Spirit. How, then, did it decide? The Spirit of God was present, and they did nothing contrary to what the Holy Spirit willed. From that time onward, notice the words: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.” For our task is to agree with the Holy Spirit.

The Lord speaks, but the Holy Spirit also does not act unless we deliberate together in council. Therefore, it is neither the Holy Spirit alone nor we alone: it is the Holy Spirit and us. Any Synod held apart from the Holy Spirit, or any decision of the Church made apart from the Holy Spirit, is invalid. “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.”

We must be able to say “and to us.” How could it be otherwise? Where is the conciliar system? Where is the conciliar system? You act outside the conciliar system, and yet you are certain that the Holy Spirit is acting? How can that be? How many actions are carried out without the consent of the Holy Spirit! If I were to say that, in a court of law—pay attention to this—the verdict had been decided before the trial took place, I would be put in prison. Did you hear what I said? I would be put in prison; that is, I would be prosecuted and charged. All because I said that a verdict had been reached before the trial. This is an extremely delicate matter. It would mean that judgments were being issued without a trial.

A court will not tolerate such a thing. It is a very grave matter. Indeed, I know of a case in which someone said in court that the conclusion—the verdict—had been reached before the trial, and he was tried immediately. Is this not a serious matter? And rightly so, of course. It is another question whether such things may happen behind the scenes. Unfortunately, they may also happen behind the scenes within the Church. For example, the election of a bishop may be decided in advance, the whole matter settled before the election takes place. Then we say that the Holy Spirit elected him, and on top of everything else we insult the Holy Spirit by claiming that the Holy Spirit made the choice. Who actually chose him?

Deal-making and bargaining chose him, not the Holy Spirit. Now, the Holy Spirit may tolerate it—He does tolerate it. Of course, things will not go well afterward in a Church that operates in this way. Yet for the sake of the faithful, the Holy Spirit still acts through such a bishop, let us say, who was not elected by the Spirit of God but through bargaining among the other bishops. I am sorry to say these things; I do not know whether I should have said them or not. Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit acts for the sake of the faithful, because Christ’s sacrifice and every Mystery are a work already accomplished by Christ. As theology expresses it, they act by virtue of the work already accomplished.

Christ accomplished that work beforehand through His sacrifice on the Cross. Therefore, for the sake of the Church and the faithful, even if the Holy Spirit did not elect this bishop, the Mysteries are still valid and rightly performed for the sake of the faithful. But that is a separate matter. How will this man, or those who elect apart from the Holy Spirit, stand before God as persons? You understand, my beloved, that these matters are tremendously important and exceedingly serious. The Church must always keep before her eyes the pattern of the first Apostolic Council: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us” to do this and this and this. That is all for this evening, and I wish you a blessed Holy and Great Lent.

God willing, we shall return on the Monday after next, March 20.

Λέγει, κανείς, θα ήθελε να φέρει ένα όνομα ανώτερο από το όνομα του Χριστιανού, ας πούμε μασόνος, τέκτων, ροταριανός, δεν ξέρω τι άλλο, αυτός, λέγει, δεν ανήκει στον Θεό. Κακώς, σε αυτό το σημείο, δεν ανήκεις στον Θεό. Δεν μπορείς να βάλεις κανένα όνομα πιο πάνω από το όνομα που έχεις, το όνομα Χριστιανός. Εάν άλλα ονόματα πάρει, ιδιότητες εννοείται, αυτά όλα πρέπει να είναι κατώτερα του ονόματος Χριστιανός. «Οὐ γὰρ δέχεται τὴν προφητείαν τὴν λέγουσαν περὶ ἡμῶν» και αιτιολογεί ο Άγιος Ιγνάτιος: διότι δεν έχει δεχθεί την προφητεία που λέει για μας. Ποια είναι η προφητεία;

πρέπει να περάσεις από τον Ιουδαϊσμό, δηλαδή να υποστείς την περιτομή. Το θέμα ήταν σοβαρότατον, διότι απλούστατα ήταν θέμα σωτηρίας. Μπορεί ο εθνικός να γίνει χριστιανός, διότι γίνεται, θα σωθεί, ή πρέπει πρώτα να έχει περάσει από τον Ιουδαϊσμό και ακόμη να τηρεί και μερικά του Ιουδαϊσμού, μερικά πράγματα; Να γιατί εχθές, που κάναμε και κάνουμε αυτόν τον καιρό Κυριακές το θέμα του Κορνηλίου, σας είπα ότι είναι θεμελιώδους σημασίας. Και όταν τον εβάπτισε ο Απόστολος Πέτρος, στην Ιερουσαλήμ τού εζήτησαν τον λόγο. Γιατί μπήκες στο σπίτι αυτό; Γιατί τον εβάπτισες;

Αυτό το πράγμα δεν το ανέχεται το δικαστήριο. Πολύ χοντρά. Αλλά, μάλιστα έχω υπόψη μου μια περίπτωση που κάποιος αυτό είπε στο δικαστήριο, ότι βγάλαμε το συμπέρασμα, την απόφαση, πριν τη δίκη, και εδικάστηκε αυτοστιγμεί. Δεν είναι μια σοβαρή ιστορία αυτή; Και πολύ σωστά βέβαια. Άλλο θέμα το ότι μπορεί να γίνεται παρασκηνιακά. Αυτό δυστυχώς παρασκηνιακά μπορεί να γίνεται και εις τον χώρο της Εκκλησίας. Φερ' ειπείν, να αποφασίζεται η εκλογή ενός επισκόπου και το θέμα να είναι ψημένο πριν γίνει η εκλογή. Και τότε να λέγαμε ότι το Πνεύμα το Άγιο εξέλεξε. Και υβρίζουμε από πάνω το Πνεύμα το Άγιον με το να λέμε ότι το Πνεύμα το Άγιον εξέλεξε. Ποιος εξέλεξε;
