Summary
Saint Cyril’s catechesis presents the Apostles’ healings, including Saint Peter’s shadow and Saint Paul’s garments, as manifestations of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling power. Strengthened by the Holy Spirit, Peter and the other Apostles obeyed God rather than human authorities and continued preaching Christ despite imprisonment and beatings. Philip’s encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch shows the Spirit directing evangelism, illuminating Scripture, leading to Baptism, and sending a new herald of Christ to Ethiopia.

We are now in the tenth week of our study of Saint Cyril’s catechesis, at paragraph 22. We said that, through the hands of the Apostles, many signs and wonders were performed. Although they were still human beings, they appeared fearsome to their enemies, because the Spirit of God made them exceedingly strong. And this is precisely what we see: the power of the Holy Spirit in the Apostles. We spoke about this last time and examined it briefly. I shall continue with the final two verses on page 225, for those of you who have the book. It says: “And multitudes of men and women who believed in the Lord were increasingly added to them, so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them. A multitude also gathered from the cities around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those troubled by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.” Indeed, as it tells me,
the book of the Acts of the Apostles clearly shows this. It is in the fifth chapter, which we examined: so great was the power of the Holy Spirit in the Apostles that they performed wonders and signs. The word “wonder” means something immense, something exceedingly great and astonishing. Thus, they performed signs—that is, miracles—but also miracles of extraordinary greatness, truly astonishing miracles. All this was done through the power of the Holy Spirit. As Saint Cyril says at the beginning of this passage, those who believed also became partakers of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and so on, and so on—forgive me—
“through the hands of the Apostles,” and so forth. But it was not only this. Even Peter’s shadow could heal. Peter is mentioned specifically, but that does not mean this could happen only through the Apostle Peter. If his shadow alone fell upon a sick person, that person would be healed. It is therefore hardly necessary to tell you that people also touched the garments of the Apostles. I remind you of the case of the Apostle Paul, recorded in the book of Acts, when he was in Ephesus, where he remained for three years. There, while he was working and...
then hurrying away to preach and give his talk in the school of a man named Tyrannus—Tyrannus was his name—perhaps a school of philosophy or rhetoric, the Christians would gather around midday, perhaps from one until three or from one until four. They met at midday because that was when people rested, since the school held its lessons in the morning. The Christian gatherings took place during those hours. The Apostle Paul would hurry from his work—that was how he earned his living—take off his apron and the cloths with which he wiped away his sweat, for he earned his bread by the sweat of his brow, and rush away to preach. The Christians
would take those aprons—the work aprons worn in front so that one’s clothes do not become dirty—and his cloths, which had touched his skin, “from his body,” and place them upon the sick, and the sick were healed. They placed them upon those possessed by demons, and the demons departed. This shows how greatly the Apostles were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit: even their personal belongings, and even the sweat of their bodies, bore the power to heal or to drive demons away. Here I would like to make a brief observation. The Apostles were Spirit-bearing people; that is, the Spirit of God indwelt them and made His dwelling within them. For this very reason, throughout all the centuries down to the present day, when Saints who have become dwelling places of the Holy Spirit die, depart from this present life, and fall asleep in the Lord, their holy relics work miracles. In response to the question—and I have told you this many times, but I always repeat it so that it may be firmly impressed upon those who have heard it before and so that newcomers, our new listeners, may also learn it—
this is the truth of the matter: holy relics work miracles because the person became a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit during his earthly life. And the Holy Spirit never departs even from the relics. Yes, the human being has been separated into two: the Saint’s soul is in Paradise, united with the Holy Spirit, while the body that has been laid to rest—his holy relic—is also united with the Holy Spirit. The same is true of the personal belongings of the Saints. We may say that a staff or some other object belonging to a certain Saint has been preserved.
So that you do not imagine that these things are modern inventions, their beginning is found in the Old Testament. I shall say more about this shortly. We also see miracles associated with icons, and we speak of a “wonderworking icon.” How can this be? Many people say, “Is she not the same Most Holy Theotokos?” Undoubtedly, she is the same Most Holy Theotokos. “Then must I go to Tinos? Can I not go here, in Ampelokipoi?” My dear ones, yes, she is the same Most Holy Theotokos. Faith is not something... Yes, faith is a great thing, a very great thing.
But there is another factor as well. That other factor is that this icon, this sacred image, was painted by a Spirit-bearing person. And through it we receive the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos or of the Saints. And so forth—you see what I mean. This does matter; I have explained to you that it matters. Christ said, “You will do greater works than these.” Here are those greater miracles. Here they are. You see that the Apostles’ shadow alone worked miracles, while Holy Scripture does not record Christ working any miracle through His shadow alone. Yet this is not the greatest miracle. The great miracle—the great category of miracles, as we were saying—
is when people hear the preaching of the Apostles and believe. Do you see? Christ preached, yet very few believed. The Evangelist John tells us this. Why? Because the Holy Spirit had not yet come. Then the Holy Spirit came, the disciples preached, and thousands believed. There you have it. But I told you that we find the same thing in the Old Testament. I remind you of an incident—if I remember correctly, it is in the Fourth Book of Kingdoms, that is, Second Kings—when some people were going to bury... The Prophet Elisha
had died.
Forgive me, forgive me. The Prophet Elisha had died and had been buried somewhere. Another man in the city died, and his relatives were carrying him out for burial. On their way, they passed the tomb of the Prophet Elisha and continued onward. At one point they saw a band of raiders. The people were frightened when they saw them, so they threw down the dead man with his bier and fled, hoping to escape and return to the city. When they threw him down, he fell upon the tomb of the Prophet Elisha, and the dead man rose to life. Indeed. But now consider also how such a thing can be exploited from the demonic side.
It is well known that certain symbols or objects used during the forty years in the wilderness possessed historical significance: the jar—the golden jar containing the manna—which did not decay because God had commanded that it be preserved; Aaron’s rod that budded; and the bronze serpent that Moses raised upon a pole. It appears that the upper part of this pole, upon which the bronze serpent was fastened, was shaped like a cross.
The serpent was wrapped in some fashion around the two arms of the pole, the vertical and the horizontal. God had commanded that anyone who looked upon this serpent would live. The Hebrews had murmured, and serpents entered the camp, biting them, so that they died. But anyone bitten by an actual serpent who looked upon that bronze serpent would not die. And so it happened: the Hebrews no longer died from the serpents’ bites. The significance of this is extraordinarily great, as the Lord Himself says in the New Testament. The bronze serpent was a type of Jesus Christ—a prophetic foreshadowing of Him.
Pay attention. Do not be surprised: the bronze serpent was a type, a prophetic foreshadowing, of Jesus Christ. It did not bite; it carried no deadly venom; and its purpose was to overcome the deadly serpents. There is no time now to tell you more. I shall say only that this serpent was preserved among the sacred objects and symbols, among the sacred vessels of the Tabernacle of Witness. All these things had been kept. At some point the Hebrews took this serpent—the bronze serpent, of course—undoubtedly with the help of the priests. For there are periods of decline, and sometimes even priests resort to magic. Do not be surprised. Does that astonish you?
When I first read this somewhere, it astonished me too. Later, I saw it throughout the history of Christianity, and I tell you again that this happens in periods of spiritual decline. Certainly, it is not true of all priests. Yet some priests resort even to magic without understanding what they are doing, without being conscious of its true nature. So they took the bronze serpent and performed magical acts with it, placing it upon the sick in order to heal them. But what they were doing had now become magic. Then the devout King Hezekiah took that serpent, even though it was a historic sacred object,
smashed it, ground it into powder, and cast it away. He acted rightly; that is what he had to do. This shows you that the devil often prompts people to turn even sacred symbols into instruments of magic. It does no harm to repeat these things; we say them again and again. People steal the Holy Chrism, which is a material sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit—a material sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit—and use it for magical purposes, in magic potions and the like. Or they take the zeon, the hot water left in that small vessel,
which by extension is itself also called the zeon, although strictly speaking it is the water that is “zeon,” meaning hot or boiling. The word means “hot,” not “new.” “New” would mean fresh; here “zeon” means boiling water. Whatever remains there may be given by the sacristan or the woman who cares for the church—or even by the priest—to be used for purposes that are more or less magical. Sorcerers often tell people to obtain some of the zeon from the sanctuary, and so forth. In this church, when the old church was still standing—the old Church of Saint Charalambos—
you would shudder to hear it. Twice I found a bat wrapped in paper beneath the Holy Altar. Twice. Twice. And so on. These are the kinds of things people do: although the Holy Altar is sacred, they place such objects beneath it. Do not even give clothing to be placed beneath the Holy Altar. My dear ones, the Holy Altar exists solely for the celebration of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. It is not intended for any other purpose. We cannot give someone’s clothing to be prayed over or leave it beneath the Holy Altar so that the person may be set right, or so that a demon may depart from him, or for any other reason. We do not give clothing for this purpose. Nothing is to be placed beneath the Holy Altar. Do you hear? Nothing whatsoever. And do not pressure the priests by saying:
“Please put it there; my child is ill,” so that the priest takes pity on you and commits this violation. It is a sin. Nothing else has any place there beyond what properly belongs there. And remember that not only is the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist celebrated upon the Holy Altar, but when the church has been consecrated, the altar has also been anointed with Holy Chrism.
The crosses you see there upon the wall, on this side and on the other, signify that the church has been consecrated. Pay attention: we have the Holy Chrism, the same Chrism with which children are anointed when they are baptized in the Mystery of Chrismation. We must therefore be extremely careful, for we do not touch the Holy Altar. Only a deacon or someone of higher clerical rank may touch the Holy Altar, and so forth. How, then, could I take this sacred thing and...
How, then, can I take such a thing and use it in magic? And so, the Apostle Peter and the other Apostles—Holy Scripture does not tell us this explicitly, but we may suppose it—the mere shadow of Peter, or the sudaria and semicinctia, that is, the handkerchiefs, aprons, and all such things, were taken and worked miracles. Yet sorcerers also take such things and try to use them for their own purposes, essentially profaning what belongs to the realm of God.
We now come to the twenty-third paragraph. “By this power of the Holy Spirit, the twelve Apostles, because they preached Christ, were again cast into prison by the chief priests. During the night they were miraculously delivered from it by an angel, and then brought from the Temple before the court. There, in speaking to them about Christ, they rebuked them without fear or hesitation. And they added that God has also given the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him.”
“They departed rejoicing, and they did not cease teaching and proclaiming Jesus as Christ.” Since we have already covered these matters in the Acts of the Apostles, where I read you a long passage, I will explain it briefly. The twelve, he says, once again stood firm through the power of the Holy Spirit and preached Christ, not only to the people but also before the chief priests, when they were arrested and brought before them. Indeed, Saint Cyril says that they rebuked them unsparingly—that is, they did not soften the rebukes they directed at the rulers. When those men beat them and ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus Christ, Peter and the other Apostles replied:
“We must obey God rather than men.” We must obey God rather than you. If what you told us were in accordance with the Word of God, we would obey you. But since your words command us not to preach Christ, and are not in accordance with the Word of God and the New Testament, we will not listen to you. We will obey God rather than you. Saint Cyril adds this as well: first, through the power of the Holy Spirit, they had the courage to speak; and then they declared that God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him.
It was as though they were saying to them, “We obey God, and therefore we have the Spirit of God. You do not obey Him, and so you have no share in the Holy Spirit.” The twenty-fourth paragraph: “The grace of the Holy Spirit was at work not only in the twelve Apostles, but also in the firstborn children of the Church, which until then had been barren—I mean the seven deacons. For they were chosen, as it is written, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. Among them was Stephen, whose name means ‘crown,’ the first offering among the martyrs, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit. He performed great wonders and signs among the people and prevailed over those who disputed with him,” and so forth. I will not read all of it, because I would tire you. It continues what we said earlier in our study of Acts concerning Saint Stephen. The Holy Spirit, he says, was not only in the twelve, but also came upon the firstborn—the first children born of the Church, which until then had been barren. I will explain this a little further on. He is referring to the seven deacons. Indeed, the Book of Acts tells us that they too all possessed the Spirit of God, and it speaks especially of Stephen.
In fact, it says two or three times that Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. Full! This fullness means complete submission. That is why he was able to dispute so powerfully with those from the synagogues of the Freedmen, as we said when studying the Book of Acts. And a little further on, after rebuking the Jews before the council, he said that they were people “who always resist the Holy Spirit.” You are the ones who always set yourselves against the Holy Spirit. He was also full of the Holy Spirit when he gazed into heaven and saw the heavens opened and Jesus standing at the right hand of the glory of God. No one can behold such a thing—the heavens opening and the Mysteries being revealed—unless he possesses the Spirit of God. These are all testimonies concerning the Holy Spirit that the Apostle Paul—excuse me, Saint Cyril—gathers together in order to show us how the Spirit of God has worked within the Church since Pentecost. And he calls Stephen “the first offering among the martyrs.” Saint Stephen was the firstfruits.
The expression means “the firstfruits,” the firstfruits of the martyrs; hence he is called the Protomartyr, the First Martyr. But I wanted to comment briefly on the phrase, “among the firstborn children of the Church, which until then had been barren.” In the Old Testament there is a prophecy saying that the children of the desolate woman are more numerous than the children of the woman who has a husband. This prophecy has probably confused you many times, because it is also quoted in the New Testament. I will say it again: the children of the desolate woman are more numerous than those of the woman who has a husband. Many people think that “desolate” here refers to the desert, and that the children are literally children of the desert—monks, we might say—so that the prophecy means the children of the desert are more numerous. That is not correct, my dear friends. It is referring...
It is referring...
to Sarah, who was barren. Sarah, Abraham’s wife, was barren, as everyone knows, and she had no children.
Therefore...
Therefore... Later, however, Abraham had children by a maidservant and by other women, and all these children became the ancestors of Arab tribes. This is why they too revere Abraham.
The children of the other women were many, however. Sarah is a type of the Church. In the end she bore one child, Isaac, whom we all know. She had no other child. But because she was a type of the Church, the Church—the communion of God with mankind, for that is what the Church is—had to be renewed when the time for her renewal came. And so the Church now comes forth upon the earth. How did she come? Through Jesus Christ. But at that time the children of the desolate woman did not yet exist; there was only one child, Isaac.
During those years, which woman had the many children? It was the Synagogue, the people of the Hebrews. But now the desolate woman—that is, the Church—acquires many children. And therefore the children of the desolate woman are now more numerous than the children of the woman who has a husband. Who was the woman who had the husband? God, if you will, was the Bridegroom, while the Synagogue, the Hebrew people, was the bride. The meaning, then, is this: Christians today are more numerous than the Jews who remained in unbelief.
That is the simple way to put it. And so we see how the Church appears with Jesus Christ. The desolate woman, then, was Sarah, who was a type of the Church. The twenty-fifth paragraph: “And by this power of the Holy Spirit”—you see that in every paragraph Saint Cyril uses the phrase “by the power of the Holy Spirit.” I remind you that he does this to show the presence of the Holy Spirit—“Philip also, in the name of Christ, once drove the unclean spirits from the city of Samaria as they cried out with a loud voice. He healed the paralysed and the lame and brought great multitudes of those who believed to Christ.
Peter and John came down to them and, through prayer and the laying on of hands, gave them communion in the Holy Spirit. Simon Magus alone was justly shown to be a stranger to this communion.”
“Then, having been called by an angel of the Lord to go along the road for the sake of the devout Ethiopian eunuch, he distinctly heard from the Spirit Himself, ‘Go near and join yourself to this chariot.’ He instructed the Ethiopian, baptised him, and sent him to Ethiopia as a herald of Christ, according to what is written: ‘Ethiopia shall hasten to stretch out her hand to God.’ Then, being carried away by the angel, he proclaimed the Gospel in the cities that followed.” This refers to Saint Philip the deacon, who had proclaimed the Gospel in Samaria. There, through the power of the Holy Spirit, he performed such very great signs that even Simon Magus himself was amazed.
I do not want to dwell on this, because we have already covered it in the Acts of the Apostles. Everyone, he says, believed and was saved except Simon Magus, who had conceived the intentions described there in Acts. He did not truly wish to repent. Instead, he wanted to retain the old things together with the new things he was receiving—to mix elements of his magic with elements of the Gospel. This is a dreadful thing, a strange mixture that many still attempt even today. As I told you earlier, they take sacred things and try to use them in the realm of magic. This is dreadful.
Simon Magus attempted to do precisely this and, of course, was rebuked very sternly by the Apostle Peter, who said to him, “May you and your money perish together,” and so forth. As history and tradition show us, this man remained outside salvation. What I would like to emphasise again is Saint Cyril’s phrase here: “By this power of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Christ, Philip...” This is something to which we have not paid enough attention. Even in our own lives, the Holy Spirit goes unnoticed.
My dear friends, when we ask for something, it is the Holy Spirit who acts within the Church. But for the Holy Spirit to act in the matter for which we are asking, we must invoke the name of Jesus Christ. We have therefore made—should I call it a mistake or an omission? In any case, it is not right. When we pray to Christ and ask Him to give us this or that while completely ignoring the Holy Spirit, something is missing. We should pray to the Holy Spirit while invoking the name of Jesus Christ. In other words, if you understand me, we
hold only to the name of Jesus Christ and ignore the Spirit of God, who brings all things to pass within the Church. This is not right; it is incomplete. Of course, when I pray to the Holy Spirit, the honour undoubtedly also passes to the Son and the Father. When I pray to the Son, it passes to the Father and the Holy Spirit. When I pray to the Father, it also passes to the Son and the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we could not say that praying in this way is wrong, but there is an omission: we need to possess an awareness of the presence of the Holy Spirit. I may say, “My Christ, illumine me so that I may say what I need to say,” but I may and should also say:
“Holy Spirit, enlighten me.” And the invocation of the Holy Spirit should always be made in the name of Jesus Christ. For the Spirit of God came to earth because Christ came, suffered, and ascended, so that the Holy Spirit might come. Then my invocation of God is in its proper form. Please remember this, and let us not leave out the Spirit of God. There are certainly people who have never prayed to the Holy Spirit, who have never invoked the Holy Spirit. If I were to ask you now to write your answer on a slip of paper, perhaps most of you would say that this has been your way as well. It is not a sin, but it is an omission that must be corrected.
From the account of Simon Magus—that is, from Philip’s ministry in Samaria—Saint Cyril goes on to speak of the Ethiopian eunuch. You remember that here again an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go to that place, to the road toward the south.” And Saint Philip wondered, “Why did the angel tell me to come here?” Soon afterward, a chariot passed by, and the Holy Spirit—not an angel—said to him, “Go near and join yourself to this chariot.” And there he saw the Ethiopian reading Isaiah.
He baptized him. The Ethiopian believed, and Philip baptized him. When Philip came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught him away and took him to another city so that he might continue his preaching. He took him to Gaza, the city of the Philistines. What do we see here, my dear friends? The Spirit of God says, “Do this; join yourself to the chariot,” and afterward He takes Philip and carries him elsewhere. This astonishing transportation is mentioned only once in the Acts of the Apostles. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit enlightened Philip so that he would know what to say. The Holy Spirit also enlightened the Ethiopian so that he could receive what he heard. And finally...
It was the prompting of the Holy Spirit—without abolishing his freedom of choice—that led the Ethiopian to be baptized. And, as Saint Cyril says so beautifully here, he was sent to Ethiopia as a preacher of Christ: “having sent him to Ethiopia as a herald of Christ.” Very beautiful. And now we come to the twenty-sixth paragraph. You see, I am moving quickly. “Paul also was filled with this Holy Spirit after he was called by our Lord Jesus Christ.” He says that the Apostle Paul too was filled with the same Holy Spirit after Christ called him. And the account says: “Ananias, the devout man in Damascus, bears witness to these words, saying to him, ‘The Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you came, has sent me so that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ He who sent him acted: changing the blindness of Paul’s eyes into sight, bestowing the seal upon his soul, and making him a chosen vessel,” and so forth. What do we see here? We see Ananias come and say, “Christ sent me, first, to open your eyes and, second, so that you may be filled with the Holy Spirit.” After saying this, Ananias laid his hands upon his head.
Upon Paul’s—pardon me, first upon his eyes—and Paul received his sight. Then Ananias laid his hands upon Paul’s head, and Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit. Was this a repetition? No, not a repetition, but an extension of Pentecost. Let us call it a repetition, though it truly is not. The Spirit of God had already come to earth. Pentecost is simply extended to those who are ready to receive Him. Notice, please: “Christ sent me to open your eyes and so that you may receive the Holy Spirit.” How does he receive the Holy Spirit? In the name of Jesus Christ. For when Paul was entering Damascus, he spoke with the Lord in a vision, and, as you will remember, Paul believed in Christ.
You see, then, that the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ are always side by side. One is never separated from the other within the Church. Then, when we make the invocation over the bread and wine so that they may become the Body and Blood of Christ, whom do we invoke? The Holy Spirit. That is, as I told you on a previous occasion, we ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit to change the wine and the bread into the Body and Blood of Christ. Do you see? I emphasize this: take care that we do not live as though the Holy Spirit were absent. Let us remember Him—I say it and repeat it—let us remember Him and call upon Him. We give thanks. He is with us and remains with us continually. And when the Apostle Paul says, “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit,” and so forth, when we...
When we live a life of sin, we grieve the Spirit of God. In the evening we can say, “Holy Spirit, I have grieved You.” There is nothing wrong with saying, “My Christ, I have grieved You.” There is nothing wrong with saying, “My Father, I have grieved You.” As I explained earlier, this applies to all three Persons. But let us not forget the Holy Spirit. I ask you...
Paragraph twenty-seven: “In the power of this same Holy Spirit, Peter, the foremost of the Apostles and the keeper of the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, in Lydda...” and so forth.
In Lydda, in the name of Christ, he healed Aeneas, who had been paralyzed; and in Joppa he raised Tabitha from the dead.
This is precisely the passage we most recently studied in Acts. So I will dwell on the following point, which we discussed last Sunday—that is, yesterday.
He saw the vision, and it was plainly shown to him that the Gentiles who believe also become partakers of the grace of the Holy Spirit: that the Gentiles too would believe and would share in the Holy Spirit. And a little farther on, “While Peter was still speaking these words,” in the house of Cornelius...
“The Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word.” Notice: He fell upon them. When we reach that passage—it is the subject for next Sunday—the expression “to fall upon” is like what we see when two people who have not met for a long time run toward each other. Think of a mother who has not seen her child for a long time because the child has been away on a journey. The mother runs, the child runs, and they fall into one another’s arms, almost colliding, if one may put it that way. This shows the eagerness of the Holy Spirit to be given to human beings and to bestow His gifts upon them.
You may say to me, “Thousands of years passed, and the Spirit of God was not given to human beings. What was the Spirit of God doing?” He was waiting anxiously—if I may use a human word that does not properly belong to God. And when the fullness of time came, God did not allow even a minute to pass. Yet this fullness of time is itself a mystery: why then and not at some other time? In any case, we can see God’s eagerness to save the human person. This is something very beautiful. And here, a little earlier, there is something I passed over, though we discussed it yesterday: “He plainly heard the Holy Spirit say, ‘Behold, men are looking for you.’”
The Spirit of God says to Peter, “Look, some men downstairs are asking for you. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.” Who is this “I”? “I, the Holy Spirit.” As I told you yesterday, the Holy Spirit is a Person. You see, then, how deeply the Holy Spirit enters into our lives. Do you understand how deeply He enters into our lives?
Saint Cyril says that they were “amazed and astonished”—that is, the people who were there in the house of Cornelius, especially Peter’s six companions—“because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even upon the Gentiles,” because the Spirit of God had been given even to the idolaters. Paragraph twenty-eight.
“And in Antioch of Syria, a most renowned city, while the preaching concerning Christ was bearing fruit, Barnabas was sent from here to Antioch as a fellow laborer in this good work, a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith.” We have studied these things, as you remember. “He gathered a great harvest of those who believed in Christ...” “He brought Paul from Tarsus to Antioch as his fellow laborer.” We spoke about Barnabas, but we have not yet discussed Barnabas and Paul in Antioch. That comes a little later than the point we have reached in Acts. “And after a considerable multitude had assembled and been taught by them in the Church for a whole year, the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch, the Holy Spirit, I believe, bestowing upon the believers the new name foretold by the Lord.” I will dwell on this—the final point.
It is well known that the name “Christian” was given in Antioch. Until then, the believers had been called disciples—not merely the Twelve, but the whole multitude. They were called the faithful. They were called those who followed the Way, or the people of the Way, meaning the way of God. There were many different names for them. But the name “Christian” was first given in Antioch. Strangely enough, this name was not given by the Apostles. It began as an insulting, mocking name.
It was used by the idolaters against the Christians, the disciples. They called them Christians, meaning those who belonged to Christ, but they said it mockingly. It is like our calling the millenarians “Jehovahs.” I have told you again and again that it is not right to call them “Jehovahs.” Interestingly, they correct us and say that what we call them is an insult. Yes, it is an insult—but not an insult against the millenarians; it is an insult against God. Why? Quite simply, “Jehovah” is a faulty rendering of the name Yahweh. The millenarians introduced the form “Jehovah,” whereas theological circles used “Yahweh.”
It is simply a faulty rendering, nothing more, but the name means “the Lord.” The Jews did not pronounce this name, the so-called Tetragrammaton, because it was held in great reverence. Instead, they used other titles, such as Elohim, the Most High God, and so forth, rather than the name Yahweh, meaning “the Lord.” Now these people call themselves Witnesses of Yahweh, or Jehovah. We call them “Jehovahs.” We say, “You are a Jehovah,” or “He is a Jehovah.” But what would that mean? “Lord.” For Jehovah, or Yahweh, means “the Lord.” Am I then going to call a millenarian “Lord”?
That is the mistake. I cannot understand how this usage came to prevail, even in religious publications—including those of the Apostoliki Diakonia that have recently been distributed on Sundays—and in other books, where they call them “Jehovahs.” That is not correct. We should call them Millennialists, not “Jehovahs”; it is not right. Just as we gave them that name—they call themselves Jehovah’s Witnesses, but we call them “Jehovahs”—so, at that time in Antioch, the pagans mockingly called the disciples Christians, not with any good intention. Yet in the end this name prevailed, and we have early witnesses to it, such as...
the Apostolic Fathers, Saint Ignatius, and others. Saint Ignatius, in the year 107 after Christ—we are very close to the apostolic age—was an Apostolic Father who had known the Apostles, and he said that we ought to glory in this name. But why do I mention Saint Ignatius? Does not the Apostle Peter himself say, “If anyone suffers as a Christian”? Only someone who knows the history behind these events can understand certain things. At that time, since the name “Christian” had become widespread and was regarded as a term of mockery, the Christians—the disciples—did not want that name. So what does the Apostle Peter say? “If anyone suffers as a Christian,” precisely in his capacity as a Christian—he deliberately uses this word, “Christian”—then he should rejoice.
Let him not suffer as a thief, a liar, a robber, or a murderer; in such things he must not glory. But in suffering as a Christian, he should glory. So the text says here that this name was given in Antioch. Very well. But who gave it? Who was the sponsor, as it were, of this name? The pagans? No. If you were ever to imagine that the true sponsor of the name was the Holy Spirit, you might ask me how that could be.
I am sorry! I am sorry that I did not pay enough attention to explain it more clearly to you. I examined this passage more closely today, but I did not bring with me the testimony from the Old Testament. I had, however, presented it as a lesson to the children three years ago.
We had begun a series of lessons on what Christianity is and what it is not, and we examined the names given to Christians. There I had the words of the Lord. I found what I needed, and I could have shared it with you as well. I am sorry, but I do not have those testimonies with me now. It is in the Prophet Isaiah, where God says, “And I will give you a new name.” Listen: who says this? The Holy Spirit. Where does He say it? In the Prophet Isaiah, because it is the Holy Spirit who speaks through the Prophets. “And I will give you”—give whom? You who, when Christ, the Messiah, comes and all these things are fulfilled, will receive a new name. And what is this new name? The name “Christian.”
Therefore, behind the pagans stands the Holy Spirit. Perhaps this will surprise you. Nothing prevents the Spirit of God from using even the most contrary and unlikely things when He wishes to accomplish something. Did I not tell you—when was it that I told you?—that the Spirit of God did not prevent Balaam from going to curse the Hebrews? And afterward, was it not the Spirit of God who said, “I will let you go, but you will say whatever I put into your mouth”? And whom does He use? A sorcerer from Mesopotamia. Who does this? The Holy Spirit. Now, do not tell me that I have confused you and made you think that a sorcerer may sometimes say things that are true.
A sorcerer may sometimes say things that are true, but to know whether what he said is true or not, we must have the nous of Christ—the spiritual intellect of Christ. Otherwise, it is terribly dangerous, terribly dangerous indeed. Do you know how many times the Spirit of God may speak through the mouth of a sorcerer? Do not be surprised. Yes; and later, when Saul went to ask that sorceress what the outcome of his attack against the Philistines would be the following day, who was speaking there? Can we not see? It was a séance, and the devil was speaking. Yes.
The devil was permitted to speak in this way to the Lord’s christ—to the Lord’s anointed one—for what was Saul? He was the christ, with a lowercase c; that is, the one anointed, the Lord’s anointed one, the man who had been anointed by the Lord. The Holy Spirit permits this, just as He also permitted it in the case of Balaam. Yes, we have many such examples, and, as I said, we return to the point: it is the Holy Spirit who gives the name. In essence, the pagans do not give it; the Holy Spirit gives it, because it is written in the Old Testament. This is, of course, astonishing. And then we continue...
It is not working. I am sorry; the passage is from Isaiah. It is not working. Very well, I can give you the chapter and verse where it is written next time. Then the text continues: “As spiritual grace was being poured out abundantly by God in Antioch, there were prophets and teachers there, among whom was Agabus. And as they ministered...” This refers to Barnabas and Paul. Agabus was a prophet, the one who foretold that there would be a famine. Agabus was also the prophet who came and took off the Apostle Paul’s belt. Paul did not prophesy this about himself; another prophet prophesied it concerning Paul. He took off Paul’s belt.
He took hold of the belt. This was a vivid, demonstrative way of teaching used by the Prophets of the Old Testament. “Whose belt is this?” He did not wait for an answer, because everyone knew whose belt it was: Paul’s. “Thus says the Lord.” This is what the Lord says: “The man to whom this belt belongs will face terrible sufferings now that he is going to Jerusalem.” Who is speaking? The Holy Spirit. But first, God willing, my beloved, since our time has ended, we will continue next Monday.

Προσέξτε. Προσέξτε, μην σας κάνει εντύπωση: τύπος του Ιησού Χριστού ήταν ο χάλκινος όφις. Δεν εδάγκωνε, δεν είχε το θανατηφόρον και σκοπό είχε να καταργήσει τα θανατηφόρα φίδια. Δεν μένει όμως τώρα περιθώριο πιο πολλά να σας πω, παρά μόνον: το φίδι αυτό εφυλάχθηκε ανάμεσα στα ιερά αντικείμενα και σύμβολα και ήταν μέσα εις τα ιερά σκεύη της Σκηνής του Μαρτυρίου, δηλαδή όλα αυτά είχαν φυλαχθεί. Κάποια φορά το φίδι αυτό το πήραν, το χάλκινο εννοείται, οι Εβραίοι, αναμφισβήτητα με τη βοήθεια των ιερέων — γιατί έχουμε εποχές παρακμής και κάποτε τη μαγεία, μη σας κάνει εντύπωση, τη μετέρχονται και οι ιερείς. Σας κάνει εντύπωση;
Το Πνεύμα του Θεού λέει στον Πέτρο: «Να, κάποιοι άνδρες κάτω σε ζητάνε. Μην διστάσεις να πας, ότι εγώ απέστειλα αυτούς». Γιατί εγώ, ποιον; Εγώ, το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Πρόσωπο, σας έλεγα χθες, το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Βλέπετε, λοιπόν, εδώ πόσο μπαίνει στη ζωή μας το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Το αντιλαμβάνεστε πόσο μπαίνει στη ζωή μας;
Μια κακή μετάφραση, δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο, αλλά αυτό θα πει «Κύριος». Και το όνομα αυτό οι Εβραίοι δεν το πρόφεραν, το λεγόμενο τετραγράμματον όνομα του Θεού, γιατί ήταν πολύ σεβαστό, και έλεγαν άλλα συνώνυμα, όπως Ελωχίμ, Ύψιστος Θεός κλπ., και όχι το όνομα Γιαχβέ, δηλαδή Κύριος. Τώρα αυτοί λέγονται Μάρτυρες του Γιαχβέ, του Ιεχωβά. Εμείς τους λέμε Ιεχωβάδες. «Είσαι Ιεχωβάς», που λέμε, ή «Ιεχωβάς». Δηλαδή τι; Κύριος. Μα το Ιεχωβά, Γιαχβέ, θα πει Κύριος. Και θα πω τώρα τον χιλιαστή, εγώ να τον πω ότι είναι Κύριος;
