Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets Joel’s prophecy as joining Christ’s First Coming and Pentecost with His future Second Coming and the Last Judgment. The lecture argues that the Church’s present decline in faith and conduct stems chiefly from inadequate catechesis, not from infant baptism itself. The healing of the man born lame through Peter and John reveals the united action of the Holy Trinity and the continuing presence of the Holy Spirit in the Church.

My dear friends, we are in the seventeenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, paragraph nineteen, page 224 for those who have the book. You will remember that last time we looked at the prophecy of the Prophet Joel, which is recorded in the New Testament. We spent our entire session on a necessarily brief analysis of it, and we saw how important this prophecy is, with what are called its first and second Last Things. In the first Last Things, we have Christ’s First Coming and Pentecost.
In the second Last Things, we have the Judgment. The first part has, of course, been fulfilled, since the Apostle Peter himself interprets the prophecy before the multitude on the day of Pentecost. The second part remains to be fulfilled. When we see that the first part, or some part of a prophecy, has been fulfilled, we also await the rest. This is what I have told you before. Pascal used to say that, of ten prophecies—and he did not literally mean ten; he was simply using a number as an example—nine have been fulfilled, and the tenth remains.
The nine were fulfilled, so why should the tenth not also be fulfilled? This is what we were saying about the prophecy of the Prophet Joel. Christ came, and Pentecost was the fruit of His First Coming, for that is what the prophecy speaks about. How could the Holy Spirit have come unless the Son had first come through His Incarnation? If, then, Christ came at His First Coming, will He not also come at His Second Coming? Will He not come again? That is what we discussed last time. Let us continue. We were at line 32.
Beside the text, the lines are numbered in groups of five. So when someone notes the page, he adds a comma and then the line number. In this way, a person can locate exactly what he is looking for. All classical works, including the works of the Fathers that have been arranged in this way, as well as those of the ancient writers, follow this format. They have these numbers in the margin, so that one person can cite a passage and another can find precisely what he wants. The same is true of Holy Scripture. Holy Scripture was divided into chapters and verses. Clearly, the Apostles themselves did not add those verse numbers—one, two, three, and so forth.
That was done later. It helps us when we want to refer back to a particular passage and find it. Then, immediately after quoting Joel’s prophecy, Saint Cyril says: “The Holy Spirit shows no partiality, for He does not seek rank but reverence of soul. Let neither the rich be puffed up nor the poor be humiliated; let each person simply prepare himself to receive heavenly grace.” In other words, he says that the Holy Spirit is impartial. He does not show favoritism because you are rich or poor, educated or unlearned.
In the ancient language, that word means “uneducated.” The Holy Spirit pays no attention to such distinctions. Since He is impartial, what does He look for? He looks only for reverence in the soul. Are you reverent? That is what He seeks. He does not seek rank. Therefore, Saint Cyril says, neither the rich—or, I would add, the intellectuals—should be puffed up with conceit. Conceit means pride. It means the pride of someone who exalts himself. Nor should the poor feel humiliated or degraded, since the Holy Spirit shows no partiality. Let each person prepare himself to receive heavenly grace. That is all. Whoever you may be, prepare yourself to receive the Spirit of God and the blessings, gifts, and graces of the Holy Spirit. We now enter paragraph twenty, because what I just read to you was a short passage from paragraph nineteen. “Much, then, has been said today, and perhaps your ears have grown weary; yet still more has been left unsaid.” Here we can sense the living, spoken word, because these lectures were written down by stenographers,
and Saint Cyril evidently corrected them afterward. I should tell you that we possess many works of the Fathers that were never corrected by their authors. John Chrysostom, for example, did not have time to revise what he preached from the pulpit and what the stenographers recorded. He simply had no time left. We know that in a considerable number of his works—not all of them—John Chrysostom had no opportunity to make corrections. His life was also filled with upheaval: they would seize him and send him into exile. How could he find the time to sit at a desk and make the necessary revisions? He had no time. And so Saint Cyril says here:
We see something wonderfully vivid: “Much has been said today. I have told you many things, and perhaps your hearing has grown weary.” In other words, “I have tired you; you have become tired and can no longer listen. Yet what we have omitted is even greater.” That is, we have left much unsaid. You know how delightful it is to read a text written so naturally and vividly; it gives you joy. “Indeed, in our teaching on the Holy Spirit, we would need a third catechetical lecture, and even more lectures.” Someone might say that, if we were to assess how much material would be needed
to speak about the Holy Spirit, we would need a third catechetical lecture and still more lectures in order to present what Holy Scripture says and writes about Him. “Forgive us, both groups, for now that the holy feast of Pascha is drawing near, our discourse has grown long today, and there was not enough room to bring forward all the testimonies from the New Testament that we ought to have presented.” Here we see a practical detail, and naturally a historical one as well. We are pressed for time. We must tell you these things because the day of Pascha is approaching. What will happen then? The catechumens will be baptized.
As I have told you before, and as Saint Cyril says in his preliminary catechesis, the catechumens were one group and those preparing for illumination were another. Those preparing for illumination were catechumens whose time for Baptism was drawing near. They were no longer called catechumens but those preparing for illumination. In other words, they had entered the final course, the channel, as we said, that would now lead to their Baptism. Special care was given to them. A person could remain a catechumen for one, two, or three years, depending on his progress. You see, there were no favors granted, as may happen in schools when a student is passed even though he knows nothing, and someone says, “Oh, never mind; just give him enough marks to pass and let that be the end of it.”
The Church did not do that, because if someone entered as an immature or ignorant Christian, the Church herself would suffer harm—a loss in her spiritual quality. Do you understand? This is why catechumens underwent examinations, which were oral, of course. The bishop would come and question them: “Tell me this; tell me that; explain this other matter.” Each person’s way of life was also examined. Did he show zeal? Did he show faith? Was his life taking on an evangelical character? Only then did Baptism follow. So, I repeat, the Church took these catechumens, after they had been properly instructed and judged worthy to receive Baptism, and gave them special instruction. This was called “the catechesis,” or “the catechetical lectures for those preparing for illumination.” What we are studying here, then, are the final catechetical lectures given to them. They had already been thoroughly instructed. That is why you see Saint Cyril mention various matters without analyzing them further. Why? Because they were presumed to be known. But as for us—up to now, we have spent five years on this, and I do not know how we will ever finish all twenty-four lectures.
The five mystagogical lectures are short, yet we have already spent so much time. Why? Because no preparatory instruction preceded any of these lectures to give us the necessary knowledge. And you know what we are doing here: we are combining the preparatory instruction with the lectures themselves. This work is being done afterward, once we have already been baptized. It is catechesis after the fact. That is precisely what it is. One woman said to me, “Why should I come here to hear catechesis? I am already baptized.” But why should we not come and hear catechesis, even after the fact, as I have said, so that we may know what we believe and how we ought to live? I would like to dwell on just one point in what I have told you:
a person was baptized only if he gave evidence not merely of knowledge but also of a worthy life. I want to dwell on the matter of life. If you gave no evidence through your way of life, you were not baptized. This is extremely important. Consider Holy Orders. When we take someone and make him a priest, he must provide testimony concerning his previous life. This is what is called “a good testimony from those outside.” We say, “He has a good testimony from those outside.” This is important. The Apostle Paul says this to Timothy.
“Take care not to ordain anyone hastily, and do not share in the sins of others, for you become a participant in sins that are not your own.” Take care. A man must have a good testimony from those outside. And do you know whom “those outside” means? It means outsiders. They were not Christians outside a particular group; they were people outside the Church. In other words, even the pagans had to testify that this was a good man. Did you hear that? Not only Christians; even pagans had to bear witness to his character. That is significant. The same applies when a monastery receives someone to become a monk. My dear friends, the same is true there, and the same is true of Holy Matrimony. What do we imagine? That once we are baptized, we will suddenly become good Christians? That once we become monks, we will suddenly become good Christians? That once we enter Holy Matrimony, we will suddenly come to our senses, though beforehand we may have lived foolishly and recklessly, wandering here and there in dissipation, leading others into dissipation, feasting and making a display of ourselves? Do we think Holy Matrimony itself will make us sensible? That is a mistake, my dear friends—a mistake. You must prepare yourself before entering any of these states of life. In the ancient Church, you had to provide evidence of moral character and of your way of life before you could be baptized. The neglect of this is why we have come to our present state.
We call it leniency. But it is not leniency; it is a culpable leniency that ultimately damages the spiritual quality of the Church. It truly damages her. And it has brought us to our present state—not only today or yesterday, but for centuries, from the time when the Church began baptizing infants. Yet infant Baptism itself is not at fault; I must make that clear. Something else is at fault. Let me tell you what it is. The same thing happened in Russia when it became Christian a thousand years ago. This year marked the thousandth anniversary. Consider what happened. At one time, the emperor in the palace was a pagan,
and so were his staff, his army, his attendants, his ministers—everyone. What were they? Whatever the emperor was: pagans. When the emperor became a Christian, all these people had to change in order to retain their offices. If the king’s ministers said, “We do not wish to become Christians,” they could no longer remain ministers. Therefore, to retain their positions, the courtiers had to become Christians and be baptized. Yet this was, if you will, an almost compulsory act. Where was the testing? Where was the period of catechesis? Where was the Church’s opportunity to see whether a person was worthy of Baptism? The same thing happened with the Russian people, who at that time were still a rough and uncultivated nation,
with all the passions and customs they had brought with them from their origins. They were all baptized in the Dnieper River. Why? Because the state had been baptized. Thousands crowded into the rivers to receive Baptism, and Russia naturally became Christian. Yet this was not the Church’s proper way—the way of catechesis. Do not forget that Russia became Christian and, of course, Orthodox in the tenth century. But by then, even in our own Christian East, matters were no longer properly ordered. Catechesis before Baptism no longer existed; those practices had been abolished. The evil began among us first and then spread there as well.
I would not argue that infant Baptism should be abolished, because we find evidence of infant Baptism even in the New Testament. The heretics, the millennialists, and especially the Protestants say that a child should be baptized at twelve years of age, and the Roman Catholics say similar things. But baptizing infants is an ancient practice of the Church. That is not the mistake. The mistake is that catechesis no longer exists. The other problem, as I told you, is that being a Christian became fashionable at that time, whereas today it is no longer fashionable. Today, if you want to stand beside someone in authority, it seems you must profess atheism and rationalism in order to become his associate. Do you understand? Things change.
Catechesis—that is what is missing: catechesis. It may not need to take the exact form we are now studying in Saint Cyril, but catechesis must exist, even if it takes another form. The Word of God must be present so that the people may be instructed in the faith. Of course, you will tell me that we have catechetical schools. We adopted their format from Europe, at least in the form in which they came to Greece—as a fixed mold. That would not matter so much if their content were Orthodox. We also have what are called religious studies, the religion period, and religion classes in schools. Believe me, I consider all these things inadequate.
As for the catechetical school today, I am sorry to say this because I love it. I have been a catechist without interruption since I was nineteen or twenty years old, and I have loved the catechetical school very deeply. Without catechetical schools, we cannot raise good children. The question is what content we offer them. Unfortunately, in recent years catechetical schools have treated catechesis as something more cultural than theological. Do not be surprised by this. Yet it is a sorry state of affairs, and it runs parallel to what has happened to the content of contemporary preaching, when preaching so often presents material
that is more cultural in character, aimed at civilizing people and making them more humane rather than more deeply grounded in theology. But preaching that merely seeks to make people more humane is not, I believe, Christian preaching. A school could do that; any form of humanism could do it. But not the Church—never, ever. It is a departure from the true purpose of preaching. Catechesis goes hand in hand with preaching, and unquestionably it also falls short in this regard. If today we teach catechism using the Fathers, people will find it unthinkable. “You use the Fathers with children?” they ask. And I say, “Why? What else should I use? Of course I will use the Fathers.” Patristic theology—what else could there be?
I remember, for example, some of the teaching manuals I used the last time I taught here in Larissa, many, many years ago. One of them was entitled Christian Civilization, and it discussed the theory of values, the driving forces of civilization, and so on and so forth. All perfectly understandable—perfectly understandable. These things may be good, even very good, but they cannot be regarded as Christian catechesis. And so, if we try in any way to offer genuine Christian catechesis or genuine Christian preaching, people will call us backward. But the question is not whether we are backward or progressive. The point is that their content must be the Word of God as interpreted by the Fathers. That is Orthodox catechesis, and that is Orthodox preaching.
My dear friends, we must finally understand this: we must teach the faith. Yes, we must provide catechesis. And take note: your children must also receive catechesis. That is why I have urged you—and I have both told you this and put it into practice—to come on Sundays and bring them every Sunday. Your children should come here too. We do not see any young children here. Of course, today is Monday and it is late. You may tell me that the children have school, and there is some justification in that. But I want the young children here as well. Even if the level seems higher than what children can grasp, and the difference seems considerable, it does not matter. If they do not receive one hundred percent, but receive ninety percent, eighty percent, or even half, is that a loss? Is it not a gain? And who told you that an adult takes in more than a child? Who told you that?
Your children should come, especially if they do not have schoolwork or studying to do on Monday evening. Bring them with you. They will gain a great deal. We must have systematic catechesis within our Church. Its absence is the great mistake and the primary cause of every decline in life and faith that we Christians are experiencing here, in our own land, in our own country and our own time. Saint Cyril continues: “There is still much that we have not covered from the Acts of the Apostles, in which the grace of the Holy Spirit worked through Peter and through the whole company of the Apostles; and much also remains from the Catholic Epistles...”
“...and from Paul’s fourteen epistles. From these, as though from a great meadow, we shall now try to gather a few flowers, simply by way of reminder.” He says that there is still much to discuss, but Pascha is approaching and you must be baptized. “For this reason, we shall be brief,” says Saint Cyril. Much remains from Paul’s fourteen epistles, from Acts, and from the seven Catholic Epistles.
We shall attempt to make a selection, as though gathering flowers from a meadow, and then present them to you. This is paragraph twenty-one, kappa alpha. And now he begins this selection, first from the book of the Acts of the Apostles: “For in the power of the Holy Spirit, by the will of the Father and the Son, Peter stood with the Eleven and raised his voice, in accordance with the words, ‘Lift up your voice with strength, you who proclaim good tidings to Jerusalem’”—this is from the Prophet Isaiah, chapter 40, verse 9—“and by casting the spiritual net of his words, he caught souls alive, as grace worked with such power through the Apostle...”
“...that among the Jews who had crucified Christ, so many came to believe in Him, so many were baptized in the name of Christ, and continued steadfastly in the teaching of the Apostles and in the prayers.” I shall explain it to you. When Pentecost took place, when the Holy Spirit descended, the Apostle Peter stood up in the power of the Holy Spirit and, by the will of the Father and the Son, delivered a sermon. Here Saint Cyril recalls a prophecy from the Prophet Isaiah: “Lift up your voice with strength”—raise your voice powerfully—
“you who proclaim good tidings to Jerusalem.” As I told you, this is Isaiah. Peter cast out the spiritual net of the Word of God and caught souls alive. These were people who may themselves have cried out at the Cross, “Crucify Him!”—people from among those who crucified Him. And these souls were not only three thousand. A little farther on, Saint Cyril will tell us that another two thousand were added on a second occasion, making five thousand altogether. What happened then? All of them were baptized and continued steadfastly in the teaching of the Apostles
and remained steadfast in prayer. We have already examined and discussed these things in the book of the Acts of the Apostles. How did all this happen? By the power of the Holy Spirit and by the will of the Father and the Son. How, then, did it all happen? By the power of the Holy Spirit—by the power of the Holy Spirit. Yes, my dear friends, could the Apostle Peter otherwise have possessed the courage that he and the other disciples had lacked while they were gathered in the upper room behind locked doors? Would they have had the courage to speak before such a vast crowd, especially at the feast of Pentecost, when so many pilgrims had assembled? What gave them this courage?
The Holy Spirit gave them power and boldness, and also gave the Apostle Peter the content of what he was to say to the people. Saint Cyril adds, “by the will of the Father and the Son.” Yes, the Holy Spirit does not act apart from the Father or apart from the Son. It is the common will of the three persons of the Holy Trinity. The three persons have one will and one divine uncreated energy: one will, one divine uncreated energy. Only in the person of Jesus Christ, because He bears human nature, are there two wills and two energies, for He has both the divine and the human will
and both divine and human energy. But in the three persons of the Holy Trinity, there is one divine uncreated energy and one will. Thus we see that it was the Spirit of God who gave the Apostle Peter everything he needed in order to speak. Saint Cyril then turns to a second event: “Once again, in this same power of the Holy Spirit, Peter and John went up to the Temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. At the Beautiful Gate they healed, in the name of Jesus, a man forty years old who had been lame from his mother’s womb, so that the saying might be fulfilled: ‘Then shall the lame man leap like a deer.’” This was spoken by the Prophet Isaiah, in chapter 35, verse 6:
“Then shall the lame man leap”—the correct reading is “leap”—“he shall spring like a deer.” Saint Cyril continues: “Made like leaping water by the spiritual intoxication of the teaching, they brought five thousand believers to soundness of mind and refuted the misguided rulers of the people and the chief priests—not through wisdom of their own, for they were uneducated and ordinary men, but through the divine uncreated energy of the Spirit. For it is written: ‘Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them.’ And through the twelve Apostles, the grace of the Holy Spirit worked so powerfully among the believers that they were of one heart and one soul and shared together the enjoyment of all their possessions, with the owners...” and so forth.
It is a long passage. Since we have already covered these things in the book of the Acts of the Apostles, I shall say only a few words and not analyze them further; that would be somewhat unnecessary. The Apostles Peter and John went to the Temple at the ninth hour—that is, at three in the afternoon—to pray. There, at the gate called Beautiful, they met a lame man who had been crippled from birth. The Apostle Peter said to him, “Look at me.” The man looked at him, naturally hoping to receive a valuable coin. “Silver and gold I do not have,” Peter said. “But what I have, I will give you. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, rise and walk.”
Then the lame man stood up and truly began leaping about, and he followed them. Everyone knew him from the place where he used to beg. People would carry him there and set him down, then take him away in the evening and bring him back the following day. He made his daily living by begging, so everyone had seen him. When they saw this man leaping about, the Apostle Peter stood and addressed the crowd that had begun to gather. You know how people gather whenever something happens. He said to them, “Why are you amazed? This is the power of the name of Jesus Christ.” But here I would like to add a comment.
“Once again, in this same power of the Holy Spirit.” And a little farther on: “They healed him in the name of Jesus.” Indeed. Take note: everywhere we encounter both the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ—everywhere. Perhaps until now we have always been conscious of Christ’s presence while, in a sense, overlooking the Holy Spirit. This is a mistake and an injustice we do, not to God, but to ourselves. My dear friends, the three persons always act together. Yet because it is the Holy Spirit who abides in the Church, the order is this: the Son visited the world and ascended into Heaven.
He had a work to perform in Heaven, and He is still performing it—not something merely completed in the past, but something He performs continually. It is the work of His ontological mediation. By “ontological mediation,” I mean simply that the presence of His human nature is itself His mediation before the Father. It is not merely that the Son intercedes with the Father for us, though of course He does that as well. His human nature itself is the mediation and intercession before the Father. Human nature ascended into Heaven, and now human nature is beheld and seen by the Father.
Therefore, as the Father beholds the human nature of Christ, His Son, He shows favor to humanity for the sake of His Son. This is the intercession, and it is called ontological. The mediation of the Most Holy Theotokos is not ontological. The mediation of the Most Holy Theotokos and of the Saints is supplication: they intercede with the Lord on behalf of humanity. They offer supplication. We might say, however, that although the supplication of the Most Holy Theotokos is not ontological, perhaps it would not be entirely wrong to speak of it in connection with ontological mediation. Why? In what sense? Listen. Who gave Jesus His body? The Theotokos. Thus the body of Jesus came from her own body, and now, in a sense, she presents Jesus before the Father: “I gave Him my own body.” And it is this body, now the body of Jesus, that stands as an ontological intercession and ontological mediation. Perhaps, then, we cannot entirely exclude the Most Holy Theotokos from this ontological mediation. Yet strictly speaking, the ontological mediation is the human nature of Christ. I repeat: the mediation of the Saints is not ontological. They simply intercede and come before God in supplication. Remember the book of the Apocalypse, which speaks of a golden censer and of the smoke rising from it; the holy Evangelist himself explains that these are the prayers of the Saints.
They are the prayers of the Saints. Therefore, the mediation of the Saints is not ontological. But when Jesus ascended into Heaven, the Holy Spirit descended and came to abide in the Church. Thus everything done within the Church is the will of the Father, accomplished by the Holy Spirit in the name of the Son, Jesus Christ. That is why Saint Cyril says here: “By the power of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus.” This is especially significant. I would remind you that Christ once said, “I work miracles by the finger of God.”
They were accusing Him of working miracles through demonic power—a dreadful thing. The finger of God: who is this finger of God? The finger of God is the Holy Spirit. Thus the Son acts through the Holy Spirit, or the Holy Spirit acts in the name of the Son. Do you see? So we must understand, my dear friends, that whenever we ask for anything, it is the Holy Spirit who abides in the Church. He celebrates the Mysteries, sanctifies the faithful, bestows His gifts, and makes a person spiritual. It is the Holy Spirit who will raise us at the Second Coming. He will give us our renewed nature,
which will be our former nature made new. He will give us what are called—and so often proclaimed to us—spiritual bodies. They will still be bodies, not immaterial things. They will be these same bodies, but they will then be sustained, if I may put it this way, by the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We shall not eat or drink, nor shall we be subject to biological needs, because the Spirit of the Holy God will sustain human nature—what we now call our material human nature, the body. It will neither die nor decay. It will be a spiritual body.
The Holy Spirit sustains the spiritual body. So take care: it is not the Holy Spirit we wrong, but ourselves. Whenever we pray, we should always keep the Spirit of God in mind. It is the Spirit of God who moves us to pray, who whispers in our ear what we should pray for, and so on. Thus, in the name of Jesus Christ, the Spirit of God acts in our lives. Of course, we would not have the Spirit of God if the Son had not become man and come into the world. That is the point.
From this account of the lame man who was healed, there is another point: “And through the twelve Apostles, the grace of the Holy Spirit worked so powerfully among the believers that they were of one heart and one soul, and shared the use of everything they possessed,” and so forth. Notice something. The Evangelist Luke writes in the book of Acts that “the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul.” Can you think of any way in which even a small group, let alone a large one, could have one heart and one soul? A family is one obvious small group.
Show me a family in which there is one heart and one soul—the father, the mother, and the children. I shall wait for you to find one and come tell me, “This family is of one heart and one soul.” I assure you, you will not find one. Why? We shall see why a little further on. How can Luke describe so many thousands of people and tell us that they had one heart and one soul? How did this astonishing thing happen? Was it merely an empty phrase on their lips, just a literary expression? No, my dear ones, it was not a literary expression. The multitude of those who believed were of one heart
and one soul. Who made the multitude of believers one in heart and soul? The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit. He made the heart and soul of the multitude one. But we do not have the Holy Spirit. When I gave the earlier example of a family and said that perhaps you would not find even one family living in harmony, with one heart and one soul, I would answer: we do not have the Holy Spirit. We do have Him, but we do not allow Him to act in our lives. We keep Him shut away in a cupboard; we confine Him.
“You stay there, while we do certain things as we ourselves want them done.” We do not allow the Spirit of God to act within our being and our common life—our life together—so that we may be of one heart and one soul. What misery! Yes, misery. And so today you will no longer find one heart and one soul even within a parish. Oh, within a parish! Appoint parish council members, and they quarrel. Form a fundraising committee, and they quarrel. Shall we buy this item or that one? Shall we buy a chandelier? No, let us buy an icon stand. But they cannot agree. What was it that could make them united as one, shall we say...
group of people entrusted with caring for these matters? Only the Holy Spirit. Is that not so? Then what is at work instead? Vainglory. Is it such a small thing to be a parish council member? You sit at the candle desk, and others see you as they pass by, light a candle, pay their money, and take the candle. They see you sitting there at the desk, taking pride in yourself: Mr. Parish Councilman! I am going to offend the council members. But the driving force is vainglory. That is why I quarrel. We quarrel with the priest. But why speak only of council members? Even priests quarrel inside the sanctuary. Why? Because we have pushed the Holy Spirit aside and shut Him in the cupboard. The same thing happens in monasteries. You see, I spare no one. Even in monasteries we do not share the same mind.
Now they say with patient endurance, “He says such things; just bear with him a little.” One person bears with and tolerates the other. But what is this? Why is it so? Because we have not allowed the life of the Holy Spirit to reveal itself in our own lives. The same is true in families, in our city, and in our homeland. Yes, it is true of us all. If we truly allow the Spirit of God to act in our lives, then, my dear ones, things will be very, very different.
Let us continue. “And they shared the use of everything they possessed. The property owners reverently offered their possessions and the proceeds from them, and there was no one in need among them. But Ananias and Sapphira, who attempted to lie to the Holy Spirit, suffered the fitting punishment.” They had, he says, all things in common. This is the second point: all things in common. All things in common. As the Evangelist Luke records historically, no one said, “This is mine, and that belongs to him.” Legally speaking, perhaps this watch could belong to me. Legally, at least, it belongs to me. But...
it belongs to everyone. You may take the watch and use it whenever you need it. These chairs on which we are sitting legally belong to the Church. You cannot simply take a chair away from here, but anyone who wishes, anyone who happens to be here, may sit on it. You see, we sit on the chair and then leave; we do not take the chair with us. It is for common use. In the same way, property might legally belong to particular possessors—that is, to its owners. For if everyone had sold all their fields, I would ask, how could they have cultivated them and offered their produce to the Church? If everyone had sold their houses, where would they have lived? In the street? What, then, did they do?
Each person used his home to offer hospitality—to host the Church—just as Holy Scripture study groups meet in homes today. Do you know how someone who hosts a Holy Scripture study group in his home thinks? He thinks that his house is available for the common use of the Church, that the Church is using his home. So I do not say, “It is mine,” except in the strictly legal sense. For this purpose, its use belongs to the Church. Now tell me: for a multitude of people to say this—people who until the day before had lived individualistic lives and quarrelled over their fields—what kind of achievement was that? Was it not the work of the Holy Spirit? If you tell me, from today, from yesterday...
from last week—indeed, for whole years—I have been hearing from you about inheritance disputes, fields and houses, resentments and quarrels; about brothers and sisters who cannot divide their father’s estate, who bear grudges and will not even say good morning to one another. Tell me, then, and let us compare this situation with that of the early Church. Can we say that such people have the Holy Spirit? We do not have Him. Where have they put Him? They have shut Him in the cupboard. They have pushed Him aside. It reminds me of an expression once used very often for other reasons: He has been put in plaster, immobilized.
The Holy Spirit has been left unable to act, and He is grieved. Can we say, my dear ones, that we are spiritual people? We are not spiritual people. I say this with sorrow, first of all about myself. We are not spiritual people. No, we are not. For if we were, the Spirit of God would act as He acted in the early Church, and we would see His work everywhere. Secondly, Saint Cyril refers to Ananias and Sapphira. You remember that couple and what happened to them: they lied to the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Peter emphasizes this in particular. He did not say, “You lied to Jesus Christ,” but, “You lied to the Holy Spirit.” Why? Because the Holy Spirit abides in the Church and directs the Church.
He is the One who cares for everything and brings everything to fulfillment; He is within the Church. That is why Peter said, “You have lied not to man, but to the Holy Spirit.” A little further on he says, “You have lied to God.” Therefore, the Holy Spirit is God. You remember when we first discussed this in the book of Acts. Paragraph twenty-two.
“And through the hands of the Apostles many signs and wonders were performed among the people. So abundant was the spiritual grace poured out around the Apostles that, though they were meek, they inspired awe; none of the others dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem,” and so forth.
He says that the Spirit of God was upon the Apostles to such a degree that they performed wonders and signs. As I have told you before, the Greek word for “wonder” is related to what is enormous: something very great, extraordinarily great. That is what “signs and wonders” means—miracles, and indeed astonishing and mighty miracles. So, he says, spiritual grace was upon the Apostles and was “poured all around” them. Poured all around—let us think of pouring. When we make a sweet and then add syrup, what do we do? As you women say, we pour the syrup all over the sweet.
That sweet, whatever kind of starch it may be made from, becomes soaked in the syrup. That is what it means to say that grace was poured all around the Apostles: it was shed upon and around them. They were full of the Holy Spirit. This is another way of expressing the fullness of the Holy Spirit that they possessed. And now we read, “Though they were meek, they inspired awe.” The Apostles were regarded as awe-inspiring, and yet they were meek. What does “awe-inspiring” mean? It means someone who causes people to fear. We say, “God is fearsome.” What do you think of that? Today the word “fearsome” has lost its proper meaning, and we use it of a malicious person: “He is terrible!”
Or we use it to magnify something and say that it is amazing: “The exhibition was terrific—absolutely terrific!” meaning astonishing. But literally, “fearsome” means one who causes fear. And we say that God is fearsome—not, of course, in the sense mentioned earlier, as though He were evil or vindictive. God forbid! Nor does it simply mean astonishing. No. He inspires fear when you begin to perceive the power of God and who God truly is. Fear seizes you. That is why, when people experienced God and His miracles, fear came upon them. You will read in Holy Scripture that whenever miracles were performed by
Jesus Christ or by the Apostles, fear fell upon the people. Here the Apostles appear awe-inspiring: they caused fear, even though, as it says, they were meek and quiet men with no power of their own. Yet there was a tremendous power. What was it? The Holy Spirit. My dear ones, when they put the Apostles in prison and then find them outside, even though the prison has not been broken open, does that not inspire fear? Remember this well. Paul and the other disciples also experienced such things in those days after Pentecost. They were seen in the temple early in the morning, preaching the Gospel. “How did you get here?” How did we get here? Would that not fill you with fear?
They saw that even Peter’s shadow healed the sick. Would that not fill them with fear? You see, then, that a person can become fearsome to his enemies when he is truly a spiritual person. So, the way to become fearsome to others or defend myself in life is not to learn that Japanese art—what do you call it? A couple of times I have seen, in cars, in taxis, the taxi driver’s child with something about—what do you call it?—karate. And I ask, “Is this child clever?” Yes. “Why is he learning karate?” Well, why? So that he can defend himself in life. My dear ones, karate is not what will enable us to defend ourselves in life.
It is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit. What parent takes care to ensure that his child has the Spirit of God? If a parent does this, then the child has an invincible ally and becomes fearsome to all his enemies. That is all for tonight. May the Lord bless you.

περισσότερο πολιτιστικά, να εκπολιτίσουμε τους ανθρώπους, να τους κάνουμε πιο ανθρωπινότερους και όχι πιο θεολογικότερους. Αλλά ένα κήρυγμα που θα ήθελε να κάνει τους ανθρώπους ανθρωπινότερους, νομίζω ότι αυτό δεν είναι χριστιανικό κήρυγμα. Αυτό μπορούσε να το κάνει ένα σχολείο, μπορούσε να το κάνει οποιοσδήποτε ουμανισμός. Όχι όμως η Εκκλησία. Ποτέ μα ποτέ. Είναι μία παρεκτροπή του κηρύγματος. Παράλληλα με το κήρυγμα είναι και η κατήχηση, η οποία αναμφισβήτητα χωλαίνει στο σημείο αυτό. Αν σήμερα κάνουμε μία κατήχηση χρησιμοποιώντας τους Πατέρες, θα θεωρηθεί αδιανόητο πράγμα. «Χρησιμοποιείς στα παιδιά τους Πατέρες;» Λέει: «Γιατί, τι άλλο θα χρησιμοποιήσω; Τους Πατέρες θα χρησιμοποιήσω». Δηλαδή πατερική θεολογία· και τι άλλο;
θα πρέπει, αγαπητοί μου, κάποτε να το καταλάβουμε αυτό, ότι πρέπει να κατηχούμε. Ναι, πρέπει να κατηχούμε. Και τα παιδιά σας, προσέξτε, πρέπει να πάρουν κατήχηση. Γι’ αυτό έχω υποστηρίξει, και σας το έχω πει και το έχω δείξει στην πράξη, την Κυριακή. Ελάτε, φέρτε τα κάθε Κυριακή. Να έρχονται και τα παιδιά σας εδώ. Δεν υπάρχουν και μικρά παιδιά. Τώρα βέβαια, σήμερα Δευτέρα, είναι αργά. Τα παιδιά, θα μου πείτε, έχουν σχολείο. Κάπως υπάρχει μια δικαιολογία. Εγώ θέλω και τα μικρά παιδιά εδώ. Έστω κι αν μοιάζει ότι το επίπεδο είναι υψηλότερο από ό,τι θα έπαιρναν τα παιδιά, γιατί θα είναι ένα τόσο μεγάλο. Δεν πειράζει. Λέτε, αν δεν πάρουν το 100% και να πάρουν το 90% ή το 80% ή τα μισά, είναι ζημία; Δεν είναι κέρδος; Και ποιος σας είπε ότι ένας μεγάλος παίρνει πιο πολλά από ένα παιδί; Ποιος σας το λέει αυτό;
να μένουν στις προσευχές. Εκείνα τα οποία έχουμε ήδη δει και έχουμε αναλύσει στο βιβλίο των Πράξεων των Αποστόλων. Πώς έγιναν όλα αυτά; Δυνάμει του Αγίου Πνεύματος, βουλήσει Πατρός και Υιού. Πώς λοιπόν όλα αυτά; Δυνάμει του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Δυνάμει του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Ναι, αγαπητοί μου, θα μπορούσε ο Απόστολος Πέτρος να έχει το θάρρος εκείνο το οποίο του έλειπε, και των άλλων μαθητών, που ήσαν μέσα εις το υπερώον, των θυρών κεκλεισμένων; Θα είχαν το θάρρος να ομιλήσουν σε ένα τόσο μεγάλο πλήθος και μάλιστα στην εορτή της Πεντηκοστής, που συνεκεντρώνετο τόσο μεγάλο πλήθος προσκυνητών; Τι ήταν εκείνο;
Ανήκει σε όλους. Μπορείς να το πάρεις ή να το χρησιμοποιείς όταν το χρειάζεσαι, το ρολόι, γι' αυτό. Αυτές οι καρέκλες που καθόμαστε νομικά ανήκουν στην Εκκλησία. Δεν μπορείς να πάρεις μια καρέκλα από εδώ, αλλά στη χρήση κάθεται όποιος θέλει, όποιος βρεθεί. Βλέπετε, καθόμαστε στην καρέκλα, μετά θα φύγουμε, δεν παίρνουμε μαζί μας και την καρέκλα. Είναι μία κοινή χρήση. Έτσι, αυτά που ήσαν κτήματα μπορεί νομικά να ανήκουν εις τους κάποιους κτήτορας, τα κτήματα, δηλαδή στους ιδιοκτήτες. Διότι αν πουλούσαν, θα έλεγα τότε, όλοι τα χωράφια τους, τότε πώς θα μπορούσαν να καλλιεργούν και να προσφέρουν στην Εκκλησία; Αν πουλούσαν όλοι τα σπίτια τους, πού θα έμεναν; Στον δρόμο; Αλλά τι;
τον Ιησού Χριστόν, από τους Αποστόλους, έπεφτε, λέει, στον λαό φόβος. Τώρα εδώ οι Απόστολοι εμφανίζονται φοβεροί, προκαλούν φόβο, παρότι ήσαν άνθρωποι, λέει, πράοι, ήρεμοι, δεν είχαν καμία δύναμη. Τρομακτική δύναμη. Τι; Το Άγιο Πνεύμα. Αγαπητοί μου, όταν τους βάζουν στη φυλακή και εκείνοι βρίσκονται έξω, όταν δεν υπάρχει καμία διάρρηξη στη φυλακή, δεν προκαλεί φόβο αυτό; Αυτό θυμηθείτε καλά, και τον Παύλο και τους μαθητάς, τότε στις μέρες εκείνες μετά την Πεντηκοστή, που τους είδαν στο ιερό πρωί-πρωί να κηρύττουν το Ευαγγέλιο. «Πώς βρεθήκατε εσείς εδώ;» Πώς βρεθήκαμε; Δεν πιάνει φόβος;
