Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s seventeenth catechesis presents Saint Peter’s use of Joel’s prophecy as inspired confirmation that Pentecost was the promised coming of the Holy Spirit. God pours out the gifts of the Holy Spirit upon all humanity rather than dividing the Spirit Himself, extending the promise beyond Israel to Gentiles such as Cornelius and the Ethiopian eunuch. The signs of the last days warn believers to deepen repentance and holiness, while functioning as judgment upon the ungodly and revealing God’s special providence for the faithful.

We are, beloved, in the book of the Catechetical Lectures of Saint Cyril, still in the seventeenth Catechesis, which concerns the Holy Spirit. Saint Cyril continues to point out various passages in the New Testament that refer to the Holy Spirit.

The passage is found in the Acts of the Apostles. It was used by the Apostle Peter in his first address to the crowds, when some claimed that the Apostles were behaving like drunken men. The Apostle Peter refutes this and refers to a prophecy of Joel. We could say that this prophecy occupies a central place in the Apostle Peter’s address, and rightly so, because in this way he gives prophetic confirmation to an event. I believe I have told you before that if an event lacks a prophetic dimension, it can be called into question. Likewise—excuse me—a prophecy that has not ultimately found its fulfillment in history can also be disputed. But when we have both the prophecy and the event that fulfills it, then we certainly have something entirely beyond reproach, so that no one can any longer question its reality. A person of good faith accepts this because it also satisfies his reason.

By contrast, a person of bad faith is actually reasoning irrationally; and if he rejects it, he will certainly have turned against even this elementary logic. We can see this in our own day, in the many arguments that run contrary even to reason itself. Saint Cyril quotes part of this prophecy of Joel, but he does not give it in full, because he wishes to remain only with the point he wants to establish: the presence of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost truly is the coming of the Holy Spirit, because it too was foretold. Therefore, the event...

Prophecies come to confirm the truth and reality of these things. Since, however, we have adopted the method of examining the passages mentioned in somewhat greater depth, I shall use the book of Acts, even though we have already analyzed this passage in our series of homilies on Acts. Still, it does no harm to repeat a few things.

Now, of course, when Saint Cyril delivered this catechesis—and each of his catecheses—it was a one-time occasion. That is, he had the catechumens before him, and how long did he speak to them? Only as long as it takes to read what is written here.

The catechumens were assumed to know many things from both the Old and New Testaments, because Saint Cyril touched briefly, of course, upon many passages of Holy Scripture without giving them any detailed analysis. These two catecheses were delivered on the eve of their Baptism. That is why he calls them those preparing for illumination: catechumens who were already ready to receive illumination, that is, Baptism. Today, unfortunately, this preparation does not exist. And if you have noticed, because our people in our time have not received this preliminary catechesis, we must now do what was once done with catechumens over one, two, three, or even more years.

At the end, they would simply give a condensed presentation, because the catechumens already knew many things and were now only being reminded of them. But how can we remind our people when they do not know these things? A reminder concerns things already known. Therefore, we must do here what was done before these catecheses, and so, as you have realized, our task is doubled. We take Saint Cyril’s catechesis and offer not a reminder, but an analysis. That is why a catechesis which, for him, took perhaps one or two hours to deliver to the catechumens becomes for us the work of an entire year. You see, I fear that the seventeenth Catechesis may take us some twenty-five talks—if we even finish it.

I am explaining why we use this method. Yet it is a way for us to learn many things, and I think it is worthwhile. So I shall read you the entire prophecy of Joel as it is recorded in the book of Acts. The Apostle Peter says to the crowd: “But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions and shall dream dreams.’”

“And your elders shall dream dreams. Yes, upon My male servants and My female servants in those days I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy.” The words “and they shall prophesy” are added by Luke; they are not repeated in Joel. Joel, however, continues: “And I will show wonders, says God, in heaven above and signs on the earth beneath: blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the great and manifest day of the Lord comes. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

As you see, this prophecy is rather long. “And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God.” The words “and it shall come to pass” belong to the prophet. You know that in one edition of the New Testament, passages—excuse me, portions of passages—taken from the Old Testament are printed with widely spaced letters. In another typeface, they may be printed in italics if the ordinary text is in upright letters. In any case, the print is different, so that the reader understands that this is now a text from the Old Testament. Yet, for the sake of continuity, the New Testament author may sometimes interrupt the quotation and insert an explanatory comment of his own.

Then the letters become closely spaced again. In the New Testament that I am holding in my hands, the letters here are widely spaced, and then the prophecy continues: “But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days,’ says God.” The phrase “in the last days” is not found in Joel. In Joel it reads, “and afterward.” But this “and afterward” is equivalent to the Apostle Peter’s phrase, “and it shall come to pass in the last days.” Thus, the two expressions are equivalent. And do not forget that the one interpreting the Old Testament here is nothing less than a divinely inspired man.

He is an Apostle—Peter—and he has only just received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. You understand, then, the immense authority possessed by the New Testament’s interpretation of the whole Old Testament, whether that interpretation is given by Jesus Christ Himself—for how many times does Christ interpret it? When He says, “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand,’” He is interpreting a prophecy—or whether it is given by the Lord Himself or by another divinely inspired writer, an Apostle, and so forth. Thus, “and it shall come to pass” and “afterward” are equivalent to “the last days.” What are these last days?

Indeed, in our own time, and especially in just the last few years, the expression “the last days” has been used very frequently. In many sermons that you hear or read, you will hear the speaker say, “especially in these last days in which we are living,” and so forth. The word “last” means final. The last day means the final day. It is therefore very easy to understand this as referring to the final days of history. For example, the last days of a certain history. This can be readily understood, as in the title, “The Last Days...

of Pompeii.” Since I have mentioned the example, let me add, for the sake of history, that in one very, very small room a half-burned cross—a wooden cross—was discovered. This little room obviously belonged to a slave, evidently a Christian, and, well...

Forgive me; I used to remember it and knew it, but I cannot recall it at this moment. When was Pompeii destroyed? Around AD 70. Pompeii was destroyed around AD 70 by the volcano Vesuvius. So we are within the first century—this is what I want to emphasize—and well before the end of that century. Why do I insist on this? Not merely to tire you with an example, but so that you may also learn something. This wooden Cross is the oldest Cross ever discovered in archaeological excavations—the oldest Cross. This means that the Cross was used in prayer. Therefore, when the Jehovah’s Witnesses say that praying before the Precious Cross...

is wrong because it is nothing but an instrument of execution, they are mistaken. You see what archaeology shows us about how early the Cross was used. Moreover, in the catacombs we unquestionably find the symbol of the Precious Cross, and the catacombs date from the first century. But this wooden Cross in particular is precious testimony that the Cross was used in the private prayer of Christians and that it truly was a cross—that is, two pieces of wood set crosswise, like this—and not, as the Jehovah’s Witnesses claim, that Christ was crucified upon a stake. Do you know why they say this?

Quite simply, the Cross burns them, just as the Precious Cross of Christ burns the devil. So they cannot bear to look upon the Precious Cross and use a stake instead. And when they make an image of the crucified Jesus Christ, they depict a stake: His hands nailed above His head and His feet below, upon a post like a stake. I might also say that this stake—and it is not I who say it, but the Second Psalm—will be raised and strike them on the head, so that the whole blow falls upon them. For the Second Psalm says, “He will raise My rod and shatter them like a potter’s vessels.” Yes, it is the rod of Christ that...

will shatter those nations that ultimately refused to believe; and that rod, I repeat, is the Precious Cross. So, what are the Last Things? The Last Things, my beloved, refer to something that is coming to its end. Yes, but what does this saying of the Prophet Joel, which the Holy Apostle Peter uses in connection with Pentecost, have to do with that? It is well known that the subject of the Last Things always refers to a manifestation of God. When God is about to appear and the days of His manifestation draw near, those days are called the last days. Therefore...

Here he speaks of certain last days, of a certain coming of God, and this is the First Coming of God. Thus, we have the first last days. But Christ will come again, which is why we call it the Second Coming, do we not? When we say “the Second Coming,” do we not imply the First Coming? Therefore, when we speak of the First Coming—excuse me, the Second—we presuppose the First. And if there are last days associated with the First Coming, there are also last days associated with the Second Coming. They are the days approaching the manifestation of Christ—if I may use this word of the Apostle Paul for the coming of Christ: His manifestation. So, then, we have two sets of last days. The first last days refer to the First Coming, and the second last days to the Second Coming. Furthermore, whenever we have last days—that is, the approach of a coming of God—God makes use of a forerunner. That is why, at His First Coming, we have the honored Forerunner, Saint John the Baptist, who proclaims beforehand the coming of God, the Messiah.

He goes before God. At the Second Coming, we shall again have forerunners. They will be the two prophets, one of whom, as the Prophet Malachi tells us, will be the Prophet Elijah. What is remarkable is that in the penultimate chapter of the book of Malachi, the prophet refers to the first forerunner and speaks of “the voice of one crying in the wilderness”—not merely a cry, but the voice of one crying. The expression is not neuter; it means the voice of a man who cries out.

It is the voice of a man: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness.” This is precisely what Saint Mark the Evangelist says and writes at the beginning of his Gospel. In the next chapter of Malachi, the second forerunner of Christ at the Second Coming is mentioned, and it says plainly that he will be Elijah. And so that no one might think this means some other Elijah, it calls him “the Tishbite”—that is, the one who comes from Tishbe, which is why he is called the Tishbite. So it is not some other Elijah, but the well-known, specific Elijah who comes from Tishbe. And what does it say there? That Elijah will come.

The Wisdom of Sirach contains a eulogy of the Prophet Elijah. It draws from Malachi and gives a somewhat fuller treatment of the matter. If you wish, you can look it up in the Old Testament, in the praise of the fathers in the Wisdom of Sirach. It is toward the end, somewhere around the fortieth chapter, and it speaks of the Prophet Elijah. Holy Scripture says beautiful things there about the Prophet Elijah and refers to the Second Coming of Christ: Elijah will come again and reconcile the fathers with the children—not the children with the fathers, but the fathers with the children. For the fathers are Israel, the Synagogue, while the children are the Church. Therefore, he will not reconcile the Church

with the Synagogue, but the Synagogue with the Church, because the Synagogue has remained outside to this day, since it did not believe. “Before I come,” Malachi says—God is speaking—“and strike the earth utterly.” Thus we have two sets of last days, two comings, and two forerunners. It is clear. What is remarkable is that this prophecy of Joel refers to both comings and both sets of last days.

Allow me to say that this is a rare and sublime prophecy, because the same prophecy speaks of both comings and both sets of last days. We shall see this, I hope, if time permits. “And it shall come to pass in the last days,” says God. Who says it? God. Who says it? God. This is a great matter. Neither I nor Joel says it. God says it. And the proof is very simple: these words were fulfilled. For if human beings had spoken these words, how could they have been fulfilled? Only the words of God are fulfilled. So who truly spoke these words? God Himself. “I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh.” Saint Cyril, quoting this passage,

does not include the part about the Second Coming of Christ, for two reasons: for the sake of time, and because it is not his concern here. He remains focused solely on the coming of the Holy Spirit. “I will pour out.” Do you see, he says, which verb is used? “Pour out.” As I told you last time, the verb “to pour out” means that there is no stinginess at all. It means an abundant giving. That is why the expression “pour out” is used. And so God says, “of My Spirit.” He does not say, “I will pour out My Spirit,” but, “I will pour out of My Spirit.” John Chrysostom interprets this and says: “Do you see? He does not distribute the Spirit Himself.”

He distributes the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is not divided, but His gifts are distributed and shared. “Upon all flesh.” Here, the words “upon all flesh” formed a kind of hidden expression. Clearly, the words “I will pour out of My Spirit”—forgive me, but this is essential—refer back to the Old Testament. This is basic and fundamental. Pay attention to what is implied by “upon all flesh.” Do you know what that means? It could not have been worded differently. It does not say, “upon every soul among the Israelites.”

For if it had said that, the Gentiles would have been excluded from Pentecost. Yesterday we spoke about Cornelius as well. His case would have been excluded. Yet the Jewish interpreters would not have accepted a prophecy stating that the Gentiles would receive this gift. My dear friends, there are some strange things here. Why have the Jews failed to understand Christ to this day? Because they misinterpreted the prophecies. Here too they would have said, “What? Will God give His Holy Spirit to the Gentiles? Impossible!” Therefore, in His providence, God uses the words “upon all flesh,” so that the Jews would think they referred only to the Jews.

But events would unfold—as we now see in the accounts of Cornelius, the Ethiopian eunuch, and others—and it would become clear that “upon all flesh” meant every human being dwelling throughout the inhabited world, across the whole earth, and that it no longer concerned only the Jewish people. “And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.” The first gift of the Holy Spirit mentioned is prophecy. Yet I must tell you that in the Old Testament, and even more so in the New Testament, the term “prophecy” does not mean only what we usually have in mind when we speak of revealing the future

or foretelling what is to come. A teacher is also called a prophet, and teaching is also called prophecy. Therefore, the prophetic gift was not given so that you might foretell the future, but so that you might proclaim the Gospel. Thus, when it says, “Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,” it means that your children—your boys and your girls—will proclaim the Gospel. In other words, it means your own people, the people, the young. I need only remind you of what happened and is recorded in the book of Acts. Philip the Deacon had four daughters who prophesied.

They lived as virgins. Their home was a kind of monastery. Monasteries did not yet exist at that time; they arose much later. Although there were no monasteries, the institution of the monastic life did exist—listen carefully, the institution itself. For it is not monasteries that create monasticism, but the institution of the monastic life. Thus these four daughters lived in virginity and also proclaimed the Gospel. That is what it means when it says that they prophesied, though it does not exclude the possibility that they also foretold things. Above all, however, they proclaimed the Gospel. So we see the prophecy fulfilled: the sons and the daughters, it says, will prophesy.

Let us continue. “Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your elders shall dream dreams”—that is, extraordinary, truly extraordinary gifts of the Holy Spirit. “And upon My servants and upon My handmaidens, in those days, I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy.” The words “and they shall prophesy” are not found in the Prophet Joel; they are added in the account written by Luke, as spoken by Peter. You see how exact Holy Scripture is in these details.

Without going into too much detail, all of this shows that it concerns Pentecost. Where and how? It says, “In those days I will pour out.” Which days are “those days”? They are the days of Pentecost, and...

the Apostle Peter gives this interpretation to the crowd listening to him. Up to this point, the prophecy refers to the First Coming of Christ, of which Pentecost is a manifestation. For if Christ had not come, the Holy Spirit would not have come.

I have told you this many times, especially when we studied the opening chapters of Acts: Pentecost is nothing other than a confirmation of who Jesus Christ is—that He is true, that He is indeed the Son of God, the Only-Begotten, the incarnate Word of God. This is the testimony of the Holy Spirit, and it is of fundamental importance.

Joel pauses there. He has spoken chiefly about the First Coming of Christ. But he also speaks of the Second Coming of Christ. At the Second Coming of Christ, the Holy Spirit will no longer come in the form of Pentecost. This does not mean that the Holy Spirit will no longer be present. Until history comes to its end, the Holy Spirit will remain among the faithful, within the Church.

But we shall not witness the event of Pentecost repeated. Why do I say this? Because heretics such as the Pentecostals—the CHOE group here in Larissa—believe that Pentecost will be repeated during the second period of the last days. This is wrong. Joel’s text says no such thing. On the contrary, it speaks of fearsome days. It is also well known that prophetic language has a characteristic form and style: within a single passage, the prophets speak of two or more events, making great leaps through time without indicating those leaps in the text itself. Someone reading the passage may think that one situation follows immediately after another, when in reality

vast stretches of time separate them. When we discussed the relevant passage in Acts, I gave you an example. When Christ spoke about the destruction of Jerusalem, He said, “And then,” after saying, “Not one stone will be left upon another,” and after listing all that would happen, “the sun will be darkened and the moon...” But Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70, and nothing happened either to the sun or to the moon. Therefore, of the things Christ foretold, only half were fulfilled—or rather, came to pass. Why? Quite simply, because the other half refers to the second period of the last days.

What is the first period of the last days? It is a type, a foreshadowing, of the second period of the last days. Thus the destruction of Jerusalem is a type of the destruction of the world. As I told you, this is the manner of prophetic language, and the Prophet Joel uses the same method here. After saying, “In those days I will pour out of My Spirit,” he suddenly continues with the conjunction “and,” making it appear to be an uninterrupted sequence, though it is not: “And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth beneath.” There is a shift: “I will show”—“and I will show.” Then come the wonders. A wonder here means something immense, something exceedingly great.

There will be signs in heaven of immense proportions. That is what “wonders” means. We may have lost the original sense of the word. Today, when we call an animal a monster, we mean that it is ugly. Sometimes we even call an ugly person a monster. That is incorrect; the word has departed from its proper meaning. Here, “wonder,” from the sense of “immense,” means something unnatural, exceedingly great, or extraordinary. Therefore, when God says, “I will show wonders in heaven,” He means signs of extraordinary magnitude. A little later, the prophecy will tell us what these immense signs will be. Will they appear only above, in heaven? No: “And signs on the earth beneath.”

I will show signs on the earth beneath. Why signs? Oh, why indeed! My dear friends, the signs have a twofold character. First, they are warnings; second, they are punishments. For the faithful, the signs are warnings. What do they warn us of? That we are approaching the end. Therefore, if you are faithful, become more faithful. If you are holy, become holier. I have told you many times, and I shall always repeat those words from the Apocalypse: “Let the holy still be sanctified.” Let the holy become holier still.

This means that you are being warned. Do not waste time; do not squander it. When you see the signs, you are being warned. Do not stand about idly; do not let yourself be distracted in every direction. Time has grown short; the signs show that we have reached that point. Hurry, then, to live a life of metanoia, of repentance. The signs are precious for the faithful. Indeed, the Lord says in the Gospel according to Luke: “When you see these signs beginning to come to pass, look up.” To “look up” means to raise your head and gaze upward. “Look up and behold, for your redemption is drawing near.”

Your salvation is drawing near. In other words—how can I put it?—take heart and be relieved. For, strange as it may seem, while these signs will be punishments for the ungodly—as we shall see in a moment; I will tell you immediately afterward—at the very same time they will bring relief to the faithful. This may surprise you. But will the faithful not suffer? Somewhere in the Apocalypse it says that the faithful will be preserved, at least from what we might call the severest forms of these signs. They will escape them, just as we see in a historical precedent: when the heavy darkness fell upon Egypt, it was so dense that it could be felt.

A darkness that could be felt. Holy Scripture says that no one saw another person for three days. So dense was that darkness: three days of darkness. It is also a type of the Crucifixion of Christ, when darkness fell for three hours. This darkness will also come in the Last Things (eschata). Yet at the same time, in the land of Goshen in Egypt, there was sunlight. That too was part of Egypt, and it was where the Hebrews lived. There was brilliant sunshine there while darkness covered all the rest of Egypt. The Hebrews had light. This is a historical precedent showing that the faithful will receive God’s special providential care. And the signs will not—how shall we put it?—what character will they have?

They will certainly occur, but for the faithful they will not have the character of punishment; they will serve only as warnings. For the ungodly, however, they will be punishments—terrible punishments. When we were studying the Apocalypse, I told you that Pharaoh’s ten plagues are historical precedents for the plagues of the Last Things (eschata). This is astonishing. Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah are a historical type of Hell. Certainly. And to have such a historical type is something of tremendous importance; let us not forget that. So the punishments of the ungodly will then be terrible—so terrible...

that, it says, they will bite their tongues because of the pain caused by the plagues. Thus it will be one way for the ungodly and another for the devout. Do you see the difference? Now the prophecy will tell us what these wonders in heaven and signs upon the earth will be. Since it last mentioned “signs on the earth below,” for the sake of continuity it begins with the events that will take place upon the earth. In other words, it does not begin with the first category, but continues with the second, producing a better sentence and a more elegant text. Pay attention: “Blood and fire...”

“And a cloud of smoke.” What is the blood, my dear friends? It is warfare.

What is the fire? Destruction by fire. Indeed, it is well known that when people waged war—how did they fight?—at the time when the Apocalypse was written, and even more so when this prophecy, the prophecy of Joel, was written, people fought with stones, bows, spears, swords, and clubs. But fire was not used. That is well known. I mean fire in the sense of a weapon...

a weapon containing fire. Fire came to be used later. It is well known that the Byzantines used the famous Greek fire. Gradually, as you know, gunpowder came into use. It was already known when Constantinople was captured by Mehmed II, the Conqueror. Gunpowder—powder, that is, explosive powder—was used because the wall of Constantinople was struck by balls of iron. We have one of those up at the monastery—not from Constantinople itself, but from that period. It is a cannonball. They would load gunpowder into the cannon, and the pressure produced by the powder would propel this metal ball, this iron ball...

against the wall. It simply damaged the wall. Of course, we could say that the fire was present in the gunpowder. But today warfare is filled with fire, because nuclear energy is fire. It is terrifying. And it is striking that the prophecy speaks of fire, even though wars at that time were fought without fire. Thus blood means war—that is, slaughter. Fire means destruction. Of course, it is well known that the word “nuclear,” from “nucleus,” is not derived from the word “fire”; it refers to the center of the atom. Yet now we have nuclear warfare, and that is fire—warfare with flames.

The third thing mentioned, “a cloud of smoke,” completes the picture of ruin upon the earth: war, fire, and ruins. These will be the signs. How did Christ express it? Christ said, “When you hear of wars”—when you see or hear of wars, that is, “reports of wars,” and so forth. As for this phrase “reports of wars,” allow me to offer an interpretation, if what I am about to say is not too far-fetched.

Very well. Why does the Lord say it this way? Why does He not say “war,” but “reports of wars”? Does that strike you? Why does He not say “earthquakes,” but “reports of earthquakes”?

It is striking. Does it mean that the war will not be here, but somewhere far away? Why would it not be here, but somewhere else? And besides, does the Apocalypse—or Holy Scripture in general, or the words of Christ—concern only us here in Greece? Of course not! Christianity has spread everywhere. Why, then, does He say “reports of wars” and “reports of earthquakes”? Does the event occur elsewhere and not here? No. Pay attention: in the past, when a war took place, news of it reached other ends of the inhabited world only after a very long time—sometimes even years later. For example, when the Roman emperor was struck down...

Apollonius of Tyana was in Alexandria, and at that very moment—he was a spiritualist, a sorcerer involved in spiritualism—he said, “The emperor has fallen beneath an assassin’s knife.” They recorded the day and hour, and when a ship arrived from Italy, they learned that the emperor had indeed been assassinated. When did they learn it? When the ship arrived from Italy. And, as we know, the distance from Italy to Alexandria is not very great. Now pay attention. When the Lord says “reports of wars” and “reports of earthquakes,” He means—if I am interpreting this correctly; and if you wish, you need not accept it—He means this:

Something happened far away, and you learned of it very quickly, because a “report of war” means that you hear of it quickly. Today, whatever happens—even if someone merely coughs at the ends of the inhabited world—we hear it. Indeed, if someone coughs in Japan, we hear him on the radio or see him on television. Sometimes, you know, we hear not only someone breathing. During the news, one of the two presenters may be on air at midnight and begin to yawn. You watch him—the poor man is sleepy, and he yawns. He yawns in Athens, while you sit at the other end of the country and hear him. What were we saying? Well then, pay attention. I believe this means that it is a sign of the end...

when you reach the point of receiving immediate news about an event, whether a war or an earthquake. And when will this happen? When the means of communication are such that you can hear very quickly about whatever occurs. Therefore, our own age, with its instantaneous flow of information, belongs to the last days. Yet Christ also said, “You will hear of these things, but the end is not yet; these are the beginning of birth pains.” The beginning of birth pains. Our age, my dear friends, has witnessed two world wars—I almost said three, but that was a mistake—two world wars. I almost said three, but...

these are preludes to some terrible evil that will befall humanity. According to the Prophet Joel, then, these will be the signs upon the earth. What will occur in heaven? There will be the sun and the wonders in heaven—that is, signs of terrifying magnitude. “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood.” It is well known that the sun illuminates the earth and also the moon. The moon shines by reflected light. It is therefore perfectly natural that when the sun grows dark, the moon will also lose its brightness. That is perfectly natural. When the prophecy says “blood,” it means a deep red: the moon will have lost its brightness. At present the moon does not have the color of blood; it has that orange hue, that violet-orange color produced by illumination. The words mean that it will lose its radiance. But the Lord said this too, as did other prophets: the sun will become like sackcloth made of hair. The Apocalypse says the same. What does “sackcloth made of hair” mean? The sun will grow dark and lose its power to give light. If you ask me—as we discussed when studying the Apocalypse—how we might understand this, I will offer one possible explanation, but then I will set it aside. I will state it and then challenge it: perhaps there will be a cloud over our earth...

a cloud like the smog that now continually afflicts our cities, especially the great cities, but spread across the whole earth. Then, through that cloud, no one would be able to see the clear radiance and brightness of either the sun or the moon. This explanation may hold; it is possible. They say that in London people cannot see the sun clearly because of the fog—not only the natural fog, but also what we might call the cloud produced by industry and so forth. Yet I will set this explanation aside, without denying that it too may be part of the meaning. There is another possibility: the prophecy says that the moon will lose...

its brightness. Might something actually happen to the sun? This is possible. What I first suggested cannot be ruled out, but perhaps it is not merely a matter of a permanent cloud covering the earth. Something may truly happen to the sun itself. What could cause it? Christ tells us. Where does He say it? “The powers of the heavens,” He says, “shall be shaken.” Some interpret the word “powers” here as referring to the Holy Angels. But it does not refer to the Holy Angels. It refers to the forces of the heavens—that is, of the astronomical heavens. Did Christ not say that the stars would fall like those blighted figs, those that were not...

fertilized, and so forth? As it says, “The fig tree casts its unripe figs.” These are figs—or rather, the fruit of a fig tree that bears unripe figs. You will not understand this unless you know village life; and you come from villages. Well then, it says that just as those figs fall and form a layer on the ground, so the stars will fall. Therefore, the order of the heavens will be shaken. If the stars fall, why should it seem strange that something might happen to the sun as well? Then the entire universe will be shaken. Perhaps, therefore—though it cannot be ruled out—the cause will not so much be permanent clouds as an actual change in our own sun, causing it to lose its brightness. You saw what happened with the darkness in Egypt, but there, pay attention...

It was local, and it serves as a historical precedent pointing to something that will happen later, in the Last Things (eschata). It was a type. When the moon was darkened—forgive me, the sun—at the Crucifixion of Christ, what was happening then? Must we turn to astronomy, as some do in the case of the star of the Nativity? They say that there was a solar eclipse, that the moon passed in front of the sun, and that the eclipse—that is, the darkness—occurred only in one particular place. But that is not how things were. The Evangelist is clear: the darkness lasted from noon until three in the afternoon. No solar eclipse lasts three hours.

It was an extraordinary phenomenon. What is remarkable is that, according to what is said about Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, the phenomenon was apparently worldwide. He said, “Either God suffers, or the whole creation is perishing with Him.” This is what is related of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite. He was in Greece, in Athens. So it appears that this was a worldwide phenomenon. We cannot say what it was, but it is a type of what will happen in the Last Things (eschata). My dear friends, this, then, is how the sun and the moon will be. When will these things happen? Joel says, “Before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.”

That great and glorious day of the Lord will come. What does “glorious” mean here? It means filled with glory. This great and glorious day of the Lord is clearly Christ’s Second Coming. And the prophecy continues. Do you see, then, how Joel refers to the two comings of Christ? The first is connected with Pentecost, and the second with the Judgment. “And it shall come to pass that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Amid this destruction, this worldwide destruction—worldwide not merely across the surface of our earth, but throughout the entire universe, the whole created order—

he tells us that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved. And which Lord is this, do you know? It is the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. It is the one who calls upon the name of the Lord, for Jesus Christ is Lord. He is God and the God-Man. For what other name can we call upon in order to be saved, except the name of Jesus Christ? Such a person, he says, will be saved. But how will he be saved? What will be saved? It is what the Apostle Paul says: amid that fearful state of things, if we can even conceive of it, the Lord will come. He will descend, and His own, as Paul says in his First Epistle to the Thessalonians, will be taken up to meet the Lord.

They will meet the Lord. Therefore, only those who call upon Him will be saved. Pay attention: John Chrysostom says “those who call upon Him,” not merely those who utter His name. There is a difference between the two. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’” but the one who truly calls upon Him—that is, who believes in the person of Jesus Christ—will be saved. All the faithful will be saved: the dead will be raised, while the living—“we who are alive,” he says—“shall be changed and caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord.” Here, my dear friends, we have completed our study of this wonderful prophecy of the Prophet Joel, which the Apostle Peter includes in the Acts of the Apostles. We shall continue with Saint Cyril’s further explanation.

Απόστολος, Πέτρος. Μόλις δε έχει λάβει το Πνεύμα το Άγιο την Πεντηκοστή. Αντιλαμβάνεστε, λοιπόν, ότι η ερμηνεία ολοκλήρου της Παλαιάς, όταν γίνεται από την Καινή, είτε από τον ίδιο τον Ιησού Χριστό —γιατί πόσες φορές δεν ερμηνεύει ο Χριστός; Όταν λέγει «Είπεν ο Κύριος τω Κυρίω μου, κάθου εκ δεξιών μου», ερμηνεύει μια προφητεία—, ο Κύριος ο ίδιος ή άλλος θεόπνευστος συγγραφέας, Απόστολος και λοιπά, καταλαβαίνετε το κύρος αυτής της ερμηνείας. Είναι τεράστιον. Έτσι, το «και έσται», «μετά ταύτα», είναι ισοδύναμο με τις έσχατες ημέρες. Τι είναι αυτές οι έσχατες ημέρες;

—δεν είναι παρά ένα καταδικαστικό όργανο και αυτό είναι κακό, να προσευχώμεθα—, άρα δεν έχουν δίκιο. Βλέπετε τις θέσεις της αρχαιολογίας, γιατί από πότε χρησιμοποιήθηκε ο Σταυρός. Εξάλλου, στις κατακόμβες έχουμε βέβαια και το σύμβολο του Τιμίου Σταυρού, αναμφισβήτητα, που οι κατακόμβες ξεκινάνε από τον πρώτον αιώνα, αλλά κυρίως αυτός ο ξύλινος Σταυρός είναι ένα πολύτιμο μαρτύριον ότι εχρησιμοποιείτο στην κατ’ ιδίαν προσευχή των χριστιανών και ότι ήτανε σταυρός, δηλαδή ήτανε, να, αυτό, δυο κάθετα ξύλα, και όχι, όπως λέγουν οι χιλιαστές, ότι ο Χριστός εσταυρώθη επάνω σε έναν πάσσαλον. Το ξέρετε γιατί;

Ψιλαφιτόν, Άνθρωπος, λέει, δεν είδε άνθρωπον επί τρεις ημέρες. Τόσο ψηλαφητόν σκότος. Τρεις μέρες σκότος. Είναι τύπος δε της Σταυρώσεως του Χριστού. Τρεις ώρες ήταν το σκότος της Σταυρώσεως του Χριστού. Αυτό το σκότος θα υπάρξει και στα έσχατα. Ταυτόχρονα, στη γη Γεσέμ της Αιγύπτου υπήρχε ηλιοφάνεια. Δηλαδή, Αίγυπτος κι εκεί. Εκεί έμεναν οι Εβραίοι. Λαμπρός ήλιος, όταν σε όλη την Αίγυπτο έπεσε το σκοτάδι. Στους Εβραίους υπήρχε φως. Ιστορικό προηγούμενο ότι οι πιστοί θα τύχουν της ιδιαίτερης προνοίας του Θεού και τα σημεία δεν... πώς θα έχουν;

Ωραία! Γιατί το λέει ο Κύριος; Γιατί δεν λέει «πόλεμος», αλλά λέει «ἀκοαὶ πολέμων»; Σας κάνει εντύπωση; Γιατί δεν λέγει «σεισμούς», αλλά λέει «ἀκοαὶ σεισμῶν»;
