Summary
Saint Cyril interprets the apostles’ apparent drunkenness at Pentecost as a joyful, courageous filling with the Holy Spirit rather than intoxication with wine. Branches separated from Christ wither and face judgment, whereas faithful branches are pruned through trials so that they may produce more spiritual fruit. This spiritual sobriety, or nepsis, requires purification from sins, passions, pleasures, and corrupt imagination and is taught especially by the Neptic Fathers, including Saint Symeon the New Theologian.

As always, my dear ones, we are continuing with the eighteenth paragraph of the seventeenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, which speaks to us about the Holy Spirit. Those of you who have books, turn to page 223.
“But others mocked and said, ‘They are full of new wine’”—speaking the truth, but in mockery. You remember from the Acts of the Apostles that, after the descent of the Holy Spirit, they were filled first of all with enthusiasm and courage. Their fear vanished—that fear which had kept the doors of the Upper Room locked tight. Now the Apostles came out and poured into the streets. The Holy Spirit gave them that courage, the gift of tongues, and all the other gifts that He bestowed in abundance upon the disciples and those gathered in the Upper Room. But there were others who did not have the Spirit of God and wished to continue living in sin—some from among the people, but especially many of the rulers.
These rulers possessed nothing more than a religious label. If you opened the book whose cover bore that label, inside you would find things contrary to faith in God. This is why the Lord rebuked the Pharisees, the scribes, and the lawyers. Some of the lawyers said, “Lord, in saying this, You insult us also.” And He answered, “Woe to you lawyers as well.” What does this mean? At that time, lawyers were those who knew the Law, the Mosaic Law. There was then no body of legislation separate from the Law given by God, whereas today we would distinguish between the laws of the state and the law of the Gospel.
The two were identical; in other words, there was a theocracy. Consequently, there was one law: the Law of God. Those who studied that Law, its applications, and so forth were trained in it and were called lawyers. When these men saw the Apostles speaking with such courage, do you know what they said? The Evangelist Luke records it for us in Acts: “But others mocked and said, ‘They are full of new wine.’” They are drunk, they said; that is why they speak and behave this way. They drank, and now they have rushed out into the streets saying all these things. Now, if we had to answer those who could speak so openly
and brutally about the Apostles, claiming that they were “full of new wine,” what would we say? We would try to prove that they were not drunk. But, my dear ones, with the greatest wisdom and insight, Saint Cyril does not try to remove the accusation of drunkenness. Yes, he says, yes, they were drunk—but not with wine. They were drunk with the Spirit of God. For a person can indeed become drunk with the Spirit of God, just as one can become drunk with wisdom. Yes, and I will remind you of a famous incident.
You will see that wisdom can intoxicate, and poetry can intoxicate too, although these are human things. Yet this is a good intoxication. It has nothing at all to do with alcohol. Archimedes was bathing, evidently in some sort of tub, when he became aware of the phenomenon of buoyancy. The water was lifting him upward: it was buoyancy, the phenomenon he had been trying to discover. His excitement there in the bath was so great that he came straight out, naked as he was, and ran through the streets shouting, “Eureka! Eureka! I have found it! I have found it!”
What would the people have said when they saw him running naked and shouting, “Eureka! Eureka!”? Has he gone mad? Is he drunk? What has happened to this man? Nothing had happened to him. The intoxication of wisdom had made him behave that way. And here, the intoxication of the Holy Spirit makes the disciples behave as they do. What a sublime intoxication! Let us hear what Saint Cyril says about it: “They spoke the truth, but in mockery.” It was true: yes, the disciples were intoxicated. The rulers simply did not understand what kind of intoxication this was, and so they mocked instead of standing in amazement. “For the wine was truly new: it was the grace of the New Covenant.”
The wine was new—this true wine, the wine and grace of the New Covenant. New wine indeed; but this new wine came from the spiritual vine, which had often borne fruit in the prophets and now blossomed in the New Covenant. This is what he means: the new wine that produces this extraordinary intoxication comes from the spiritual vine. And that spiritual vine is none other than Christ and the Holy Spirit. Earlier, while answering your questions, I told you that Christ and the Holy Spirit are always inseparably joined. Wherever Christ is, there is the Holy Spirit; wherever the Holy Spirit is, there is Christ. You will see that here as well. First of all, this spiritual vine is Jesus Christ.
He says that, just as a vine remains planted yet brings forth fruit at various appointed seasons, so too the same Spirit—who was present before and worked many things through the prophets—has now manifested something new and wonderful. In other words, the vineyard always remains, but at appointed times it brings forth fruit—new fruit, indeed. So it is with the Holy Spirit: He is the same. What, then, is the vine? It is the Holy Spirit.
In the prophets, the fruit He bore was everything they spoke, wrote, and proclaimed—the prophetic word. Now we have Pentecost. So what is this vine? It is the Holy Spirit, the spiritual vine that produces the spiritual new wine. A little farther on Saint Cyril will speak to us about Christ. But since we have reached this point, allow me to mention it now, so that I may show you how Christ and the Holy Spirit go side by side. Christ said, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” This is in the fifteenth chapter of the Gospel according to John. It is the passage we read on the first Friday.
We hear this Gospel during the first week—the first Friday of the Salutations, in the first week of the Fast—and we also hear the words on Great Thursday, in the first Gospel reading, though that reading does not begin there: “I am the vine; you are the branches.” The vine is the root and the trunk together. The branches are the vine shoots, what we today call the canes of the vine. “I am the vine,” He says—that is, the stock and the trunk. You are the shoots. From where do you receive the sap? From Me. This is why He says, “Without Me you can do nothing.” Why did the Lord use this vine and this image of the vineyard?
The bishop holds the dikerion and trikerion, whose meaning I believe you know. The trikerion symbolizes the dogma of the Holy Trinity, while the dikerion symbolizes the dogma of the Incarnation. The bishop holds these two great dogmas and blesses the people with them, because upon them rest the Church, Christianity, and salvation: the dogma of the Holy Trinity and the dogma of the Incarnation—that Christ has two natures. The dikerion signifies the two natures, divine and human. I believe you know this. Now listen. As the bishop blesses, he says, “May the Lord bless this vine, which His right hand has planted”—or, as the text itself says, “which Your right hand has planted.”
These exact words are found in the prophets. What the bishop says comes word for word from the prophets. What is this vine of Yours? A psalm says, “Lord, You brought Your vine out of Egypt and planted it here.” Where? In the land of Canaan. But why did You leave this vineyard without a fence, so that the wild boars entered? The old word monios means a wild boar; monioi means wild boars in the plural. They came in, dug it up, and destroyed Your vineyard. Why, Lord? I remind you of Christ’s parable about the vineyard, in which the owner “put a hedge around it.”
He marked it out and “put a hedge around it.” The winepress is where the grapes are trodden. He built a tower, where those tending the vineyard would stay during the harvest. There was the winepress and the fence surrounding the vineyard. What is this vineyard? It is the people of Israel. But this vineyard missed its purpose and failed. Yes, the right hand of God planted Israel in the land of Canaan, but the old Israel could not remain faithful to the Law of God and the Covenant of God. It failed and sinned.
God speaks in astonishment: “I planted you as a choice vine.” How, He asks through Isaiah, did you become a vine of Sodom and Gomorrah? “I planted you as a choice vine.” This refers to a particular variety of grape, something like the sultana or rozaki grape today—an especially choice variety. I planted a choice vine. How did you turn into a vine of Sodom and Gomorrah, a corrupted vine? What does this mean? You, My people, were planted by Me, because I chose your patriarch, Abraham.
I emphasize this point because I shall use it again shortly: your patriarch Abraham. From your patriarch Abraham you sprang forth, O people of Israel, and I established you here and planted you here, because I had promised this to your patriarch Abraham. But you do not resemble your patriarch Abraham. You have become something else. To use a modern expression, you have become an alienated people. You have lost your identity. Are you Israel? No. You are Sodom and Gomorrah—a vine of Sodom, a vine of Gomorrah. Therefore God permits the wild boars to enter—that is, the enemies, the hostile neighboring nations, profane people who certainly did not belong to God—
and to trample Israel underfoot. Yes, but must what God plants be utterly lost? When answering your questions, I told you that what God creates does not vanish; it is made new. For God said that everything was “very good.” He returns nothing to nonexistence. What happens, then? There is a transfer. Abraham is no longer the patriarch of the new vine—the patriarch from whom the old people of Israel came. There is now a new patriarch, and this new patriarch is Christ. This is why He said, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” A new vine!
If you remember this whenever you hear this comparison and image—when this Gospel is read in the Church, or when you yourselves read Holy Scripture—you will remember why Christ said it. The old vine had failed. Now there is the new vine: Christ, the new patriarch. I told you to take note of Abraham, your patriarch. Now there is a new patriarch. Why? Because Christ is the patriarch and founder of the faith. Abraham, of course, was the patriarch of the faith, but his people fell away. Now Christ is the new patriarch, again the patriarch of the faith. And all who believe in Jesus Christ constitute His new people, God’s new vineyard, God’s inheritance.
God’s inheritance. And do you know why priests are called clergy? Because they are God’s allotted portion. I spoke about this long ago when we were studying Deuteronomy and discussing why the descendants of Levi were not to receive land, but instead were to receive the tithe from the other tribes. Pay attention. From the twelve tribes, the sons of Joseph were counted as two tribes, giving us thirteen. We then remove the tribe of Levi, which was left without an allotment—and by allotment we mean an agricultural parcel of land—and so there are once again twelve tribes. The tribe of Levi remained without land, while the other tribes were required to give a tithe,
The twelve tribes were to pay the tithe as a tax and offer it to God; they brought it to the Temple. “You shall not appear before God empty-handed,” says the Prophet Isaiah. And so they left there in the Temple the tithe of all their produce. Does God eat the tithe? He gave it to the Levites, that is, to the clergy. What, then, was the allotted field of the tribe of Levi? The field of the tribe of Levi was God Himself. He was their portion, their allotted inheritance, as though He were their parcel of land. This is why priests are called clergy—those who have God as their portion. But allow me to say that all the faithful could be called clergy in this sense. Why? I am taking the point rather far, but it is because to us has fallen as our portion
—as the Apostle Peter says—God Himself, Christ Himself. “God has fallen to us as our portion; Christ has fallen to us.” The Greek word means to receive something by lot, as in a lottery. The first prize has fallen to us. Thus, God’s faithful people are God’s own portion, His chosen and treasured people. They are called His treasured possession: a possession is something belonging to one’s estate. In ancient Greek, property was called one’s substance or estate, without the additional prefix. Therefore, a treasured people means a people who are God’s field, His vineyard, His inheritance. And the astonishing thing is that God inherits
God’s own portion. In other words, God has us as His allotted portion, His field and His vineyard, while we have God as our field and our vineyard. It is astonishing. This is what it says at the end of the Apocalypse: behold, the Victor rides out on a white horse—the Word (Logos) of God—and His name is “the Word of God.” And He says, “My reward is with Me.” My reward—His own reward. Christ’s reward is the people whom He won with His blood. That is why He says, “My reward.” The reward of Christ—His vineyard, to use another image; His little threshing floor—is the people of God. But He also says, “I will give to each one his reward.” Now it is not My reward, but each person’s reward. And what is the reward of every believer? Christ. So listen to how wonderful this is—how truly wonderful! Christ has the faithful as His reward, and the faithful person has Christ as his reward. This, then, is the true vine. But why does He call it true? Why is the adjective “true” added? It is not insignificant, nor is it merely redundant. It is called true because another vine proved false and worthless, because that first vine
was appointed and planted by God, yet it became a vine of Sodom and Gomorrah. But now this is the true vine. Nothing can befall it, and it will remain until the end of the age; it will remain the true vine. And all who remain as branches upon this true vine have nothing to fear. Listen, my beloved. As Christianity moves toward the Last Things (eschata)—as we said during the previous question period—it will shrink and shrink. It will become smaller and smaller, and so will Orthodoxy. Do not be misled by the missionary efforts being made. In reality, we would say...
Christianity is shrinking. First it declines in quality, and then in numbers. Be aware of it: it is shrinking. We must say this, because if it were not shrinking, how could the Antichrist come? I am giving you a very simple argument. Yet do not imagine that Christ will be left on earth without an inheritance, without branches, without a vineyard. Do not imagine that. Until Christ comes to earth, there will be faithful people. The Church will exist; God’s vineyard will exist, so that Christ may say,
“I am the true vine.” It will not be deprived of its inheritance or stripped bare. Christ says only that the branches which bear no fruit
are broken off. They are cast away, they wither, and they are thrown into the furnace. What else can happen to a believer who departs from Christ? What greater fate could there be than to wither? What does it mean to wither? Where the Spirit of God is absent, there is no life. Therefore, there is withering and dryness. Take heed. He says that they are cast away and afterward gathered for the furnace, for the fire. This is an image of Hell.
Hell. By contrast, there are the branches that have within them the desire to bear fruit. “My Father is the vinedresser.” The vinedresser, My Father, comes and prunes them, just as a vine-grower prunes his vineyard, so that they “may bear more fruit.” For you know that an unpruned vine produces few grapes, while a pruned vine produces many. For this vine to bear fruit, it must be pruned. This pruning is the trials Christians undergo in the present world. It is the tribulation the Christian experiences in this world. It is the narrow and afflicted way, the hard road and the narrow gate in this present world. These are the people who accept the pruning so that
they “may bear more fruit,” so that these faithful people may produce a richer harvest. Christ will never be left without a vineyard, and God will never be left without His treasured people. When He comes, He will have His treasured people: those who have not worshiped the Antichrist. The secularization of the Church is the beginning and forerunner of the Antichrist. Secularization! I will not stop telling you this until I die, as long as I still have my faculties. The secularization of the Church is the beginning of the Antichrist. Secularized Christians will worship the Antichrist. Those who remain faithful will not worship him. They constitute God’s vineyard.
They form the vineyard enclosed and protected by a fence. They are God’s portion, His treasured people. Here, however, we see that Saint Cyril refers to this vineyard, this spiritual vineyard, both in relation to the Holy Spirit and in relation to the Son, Jesus Christ. For, as I told you, the Son is not separated from the Holy Spirit.
“Grace reached the Fathers as well, but not in such overflowing measure; there they partook of the Holy Spirit, but here they were wholly baptized in Him.” Grace, he says, reached the Fathers too. Which Fathers? Those of the Old Testament. Let me remind you of something so that you may understand this a little better. As you know, several times during the ecclesiastical year—perhaps two, three, four, or five—we celebrate feasts of the Fathers, such as those of the Ecumenical Councils. Take, for example, the First Ecumenical Council, with its 318 God-bearing Fathers, and so forth. If you have noticed, whenever we celebrate Fathers of Councils
—I say again, of Councils—the readings are from the Old Testament. One of them tells how Abraham gathered 318 men born in his household, as you see—men capable of fighting. Abraham’s whole household must have numbered two or three thousand people, including all those born in his house, that is, his servants. Yet at that time he had no children, and so he said, “Lord, how can You tell me what will happen, when I have no descendant?” And so...
That passage is appointed as a reading. Another is also read: “Ask your father, and he will tell you; ask your elders, and they will declare it to you,” and so forth. These passages are in the Old Testament. Thus, the Fathers are...
the Patriarchs, including those who lived before the Law: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. These are Fathers before the Law. But there are also those before Abraham, such as Noah, Seth, Enosh, and Enoch—Enosh and Enoch. All of these are called Fathers. These Fathers were not deprived of the Holy Spirit; they possessed the Holy Spirit. This is why he says here—here, forgive me—“Grace reached the Fathers as well, but not in such overflowing measure.” On the day of Pentecost, however, we have the coming of the Holy Spirit. We receive the grace He brings in its fullness, in overflowing abundance.
“There they partook of the Holy Spirit, but here they were wholly baptized in Him.” There they merely partook of the Holy Spirit, whereas here they were baptized in Him completely. With Pentecost, therefore, there is now the fullness of the Holy Spirit. And we enter paragraph nineteen. “But Peter, who possessed the Holy Spirit and knew what he possessed, says...” Peter, who had the Holy Spirit and knew what he possessed, says: “Men of Israel, you who recite Joel without understanding what has been written...”
“These men are not drunk as you suppose.” Men of Israel, you hear the Prophet Joel read in the synagogue, but you do not understand what has been written or what it means. These men are not drunk in the way you suppose. He is referring to the other disciples and also to the 120 who were in the Upper Room. Saint Cyril now adds by way of interpretation: “They are indeed drunk, but not as you suppose.” They are intoxicated, though not in the way you imply or imagine, “but as it is written.”
“They shall be filled with the abundance of Your house, and You will give them drink from the torrent of Your delight.” This is Psalm 35, verse 9, which says that they will be filled from the abundance. The Greek word here means richness, something full and plentiful, as we might speak of rich milk, rich cheese, or a full-bodied wine. They are filled with the abundance of Your house. And what is the house of God? It is the Kingdom of God.
Your Kingdom. “And from the torrent of Your delight.” What is God’s delight? It is the blessedness of God. Delight means enjoyment; therefore, it refers to blessedness. “And from the torrent of Your blessedness, from Your delight, You will give them drink.” You see, then, that this is a spiritual intoxication. That is why he continues: “They are drunk with a sober intoxication.” Yes, you were right to call them drunk, but theirs is a sober intoxication. I do not know whether you are familiar with the Greek verb meaning “to be sober,” but it is good to explain it, because it has wider significance and is used in our Christian and Patristic writings. We speak of Neptic theology, nepsis (watchfulness), and the Neptic life. They all come from this verb, whose original, literal meaning
is to abstain from wine—that is, not to drink wine, or to drink very little. If I abstain from wine, then my mind remains clear. By extension, someone whose mind remains clear because he has not become drunk is called sober. In the Fathers, the word is used metaphorically. A sober person is one who is not intoxicated by the things that intoxicate a human being—pleasures and a life of dissipation. In this way a person acquires sobriety, spiritual sobriety.
Such a person has purified his nous, the spiritual intellect—not merely by having good thoughts, but by submitting both heart and nous to purification. He is freed not only from sins already committed in action, but also from sins that exist in potential and lurk within a person, such as corrupt imagination and the like. Such a person is said to be watchful and sober. The path by which one attains this sobriety is called nepsis, or watchfulness. And the whole body of writings concerned with the way of ascesis, the ascetic discipline by which we attain this nepsis...
This is called nepsis, or watchfulness; the theology concerned with nepsis is called Neptic Theology, and the Fathers who spoke about it are called the Neptic Fathers. I have given you the whole background. But take note: all the Fathers are neptic, because if a Father is not neptic, he is not a Father; and all the Saints are neptic. If they were not neptic, they would not be Saints. Yet because certain Fathers devoted themselves specifically to writings on nepsis, we call them the Neptic Fathers. We do not usually call John Chrysostom a Neptic Father, since he did not write specifically neptic works; nevertheless, he certainly is neptic. We reserve the name Neptic Fathers for those who wrote works specifically about nepsis. Do you understand?
Could anyone truly be a Father, so to speak, if he were not neptic? It is impossible. Neptic Theology is of tremendous importance to us—tremendous importance. Yet, sadly, modern theology has pushed it aside. It has been pushed to the margins. In earlier years, even academic theology treated the Neptic Fathers in this way. Fortunately, the theological schools are now beginning to recover Neptic Theology. But take the late Balanos, for example. Good heavens! Do you know what he called Saint Symeon the New Theologian? Mentally ill and epileptic.
Yes, yes—can you imagine? He claimed that Saint Symeon’s thought was diseased and that his writings could not be regarded as works of theology. Whose writings? Those of the man whom the Church—the infallible Church—named the New Theologian. It is well known that three Saints bear the title Theologian. All the Fathers theologized to a greater or lesser degree, but pre-eminently there are Saint John the Evangelist and Theologian, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and Saint Symeon the New Theologian. So if this third, and perhaps final—perhaps final—honored title was bestowed on him by the Church, the title of New Theologian, then even this word “New”...
always suggests something belonging to the Last Things, just as the term “New Martyrs” always suggests something final: after the New Martyrs, there will not be another new generation of New Martyrs. They are the last generation. Did you hear that? They are the last generation. For this reason, perhaps—I say perhaps, though this is how it appears—Saint Symeon may be the last Theologian. If Saint Symeon received this honored title, then who are you, whoever you may be, to call him mentally ill, epileptic, deranged, or deluded? Who are you? My dear friends, fortunately the subject of nepsis is coming to the surface once again. Now, there is a little tool...
Sometimes, you know, we keep a few simple tools in our bag or pocket—a small screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a pocketknife, or something similar—or perhaps in the car, so that we can make a quick repair. One such little tool, if indeed it is not a great tool, in this struggle for nepsis is the prayer rope. It is the prayer rope. I have said all this to free you from possible misunderstandings and to show how mistaken those people are who accuse, speak against, and slander whatever they choose to slander. They do have one mitigating circumstance: their ignorance. But they also have one aggravating circumstance...
namely, that they remain ignorant, because ignorance is punished by God. Let us move on.
“Deadening sin.” What is this intoxication with which they are intoxicated? It is a sober intoxication. Saint Cyril says that it deadens sin. It puts sin to death. Yet while it puts sin to death, it gives life to my heart: “and life-giving to the heart.” In other words, sin is put to death and the heart is brought to life. If someone can examine a text even briefly and understand something of it, he can very easily see that here the holy Father, Saint Cyril, is presenting a neptic teaching. That is why I told you that there is no...
there is no Father who does not possess Neptic Theology, although it may not be presented systematically. Saint Cyril is giving catechesis, yet you can see neptic teachings in it. Do you see them? We could make a literary analysis, if you wish. These are neptic teachings. What are they? That this nepsis, this intoxication, succeeds in putting sin to death and bringing the heart to life. This is a fruit of nepsis. “An intoxication contrary to bodily intoxication.” It has nothing in common with the drunkenness of those who drink in taverns, stagger as they walk, have no idea where they are going, and wander from one pavement to the other and back again. “For the one causes forgetfulness even of things already known, whereas this one...”
“grants knowledge of things not previously known.” Those others experience bodily drunkenness. They drink from ordinary grapes—from must that has fermented into wine—and become drunk in taverns. They forget even what they once remembered. If you ask a drunkard for an address you are trying to find, do you think he will be able to tell you? If you ask him where he lives, will he even remember the street? He will not be able to tell you. And since the text speaks this way, let me give you a little light relief. A drunkard reaches the door of his house and tries to put his key into the keyhole. But the keyhole is moving; it is climbing upward.
The higher the “keyhole” moved, the higher he raised his key. It was actually a cockroach crawling up the door, which he had mistaken for the keyhole. So, Saint Cyril says that the drunkard forgets even what he knows. By contrast, the person filled with divine intoxication comes to know even what he did not know, because he also possesses the prophetic gift. His nous—the spiritual intellect—is purified, and he can clearly perceive things that most people cannot see. “They are intoxicated by drinking the wine of the spiritual vine.” They are intoxicated. And what do they drink? The wine of this spiritual vine—the vine that says...
“I am the vine, and you are the branches.” I mentioned this earlier; Saint Cyril writes it further on, but I explained it beforehand. In the previous passage, what did the vine signify? The Holy Spirit. Here, what does the vine signify? Jesus Christ. “But if you are not convinced, understand what is being said from the time of day.” The Apostle Peter says this to the crowds—or rather, to those who were mocking, because the crowds themselves were not mocking. The crowds were amazed, saying that each person heard the proclamation of the Gospel in his own language, and they asked, “What are these wondrous things that our eyes behold today?” But there were also mockers, as I explained earlier. So he says, if you wish to understand what is being said, “it is only the third hour of the day.” What more can I tell you? It is nine o’clock in the morning.
It is nine o’clock in the morning. What did he mean? Do people get drunk at nine in the morning? Do they become drunk first thing in the morning? They do not drink wine so early in order to get drunk. If they had been drunk the night before, their drunkenness would have worn off by morning. Their heads and eyelids would feel heavy, and they would go sluggishly and lazily to work, but they would no longer be drunk. Would anyone get up first thing in the morning—and such a great number of people at that—to become drunk? Saint Cyril takes this natural argument—that people do not become drunk first thing in the morning—and gives it a mystical meaning. He says, “For He who was crucified at the third hour, as Mark says, has now, at the third hour, sent down grace.” Mark says that the Lord was crucified at nine in the morning. Take note that this does not contradict the other Gospels, though this is not the time to explain the matter further. I simply point out that there is no contradiction when another Evangelist speaks of the sixth hour, which is noon. In saying this, however, Mark also speaks in a mystical way, a meaning that Saint Cyril uncovers or interprets. When we say “mystical,” we do not mean merely hidden, although it may sometimes be hidden. “Mystical,” from the words “initiate” and “mystery,” refers to the way...
in which I enter into the deeper meaning of an outward event and come to know it as one initiated into the Mystery. Pay attention. Mark says that Christ was crucified at the third hour, and Saint Cyril theologizes: “For the grace of the one is not different from the grace of the other; rather, He who was crucified then and made the promise has fulfilled what He promised.” The grace of the one is not different. Of which one? Of Christ, who was crucified. Nor is the grace of the other different. Of whom? Of the Holy Spirit, who now comes upon the Apostles at the third hour. At the third hour Christ dies on the Cross—forgive me, Christ is crucified.
He died; He was crucified. At the third hour Christ is crucified, and at the third hour the Holy Spirit comes. What is being shown here? That the Holy Spirit would not have come if the Son had not died upon the Cross. What else does it mean? That as the Son acts, so also the Holy Spirit acts. There is no division between the two Persons, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This is what is called mystical teaching—the deeper teaching. “But if you wish, receive testimony as well; listen,” he says. If you will not accept testimony—testimony from where? From where? From the Prophet Joel. What will the Prophet Joel say? The Prophet Joel...
will speak, in essence, of a spiritual intoxication. Since you will not accept this, what else can be done? I will bring before you the Prophet Joel. This is what the Apostle Peter says among the crowds, though of course his speech is concise. We shall examine it in detail. Joel did not say, “I will make the people drunk.” God says it through Joel. So if you will not accept that it is nine in the morning and that no one could be drinking wine so early, then at least accept this: the Prophet Joel says that people will become intoxicated with the intoxication of God. Saint Peter now enters into Joel’s prophecy, to which, my dear friends, we must pay close attention. We shall not complete it today, of course, but Joel’s prophecy is very interesting.
It is exceedingly interesting. Let me say this, not because you are failing to attend—you do attend. First of all, I hope we are alive next Monday, and I urge every one of you to be present. Joel’s prophecy was not exhausted at Pentecost. It will be fulfilled completely at the Second Coming of Christ, which naturally concerns us very deeply. So Saint Peter says to the people, “But this is what was spoken through the Prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass afterward, God says, that I will pour out of My Spirit.’” “I will pour out.” Pay attention to this expression.
Saint Cyril says, “The words ‘I will pour out’ intimate an abundant gift.” He uses the verb “I will pour out,” the future tense of “to pour out,” to indicate and suggest an exceedingly abundant offering. This shows us how necessary a true knowledge of language is. Oh, my dear friends, of course people have differing levels of education. Some attended primary school, others secondary school, and others went further. I do not wish to belittle those who received no education, but among those who learned at least a little—or perhaps a great deal—I want to emphasize how much is being lost when young students today are no longer given the opportunity...
Glory to God! Not merely because they might receive a diploma that could help them secure some modest position and earn a living, but so that they may understand Holy Scripture. If for nothing else, then so that they may understand Holy Scripture and delight in it. I would say that education is worthwhile chiefly for this—not for earning a living, as was also the ideal of the ancient Greeks, nor for showing off, nor for anything else at all. Although education forms the human person—and sometimes, of course, deforms him—its chief value is that it enables us to understand the Word of God.
Allow me to say this. Blessed be the memory of my mother, who insisted that I attend secondary school. She insisted that I go. It was not that I did not want to.
A new eight-year school system had been introduced, and we had become a little confused about it all. But she insisted: “No, you will go to secondary school.” And she would sit beside me. I had to study for the entrance examinations, and she sat next to me—I have told you this before—with a few sweets, some roasted pumpkin seeds, some peanuts, or something of the sort, while she did her sewing. It was summertime, and we sat outside in the courtyard, because we learned about the change sometime in August. We had one month before the examinations. That law was introduced in 1937. I was ten years old and in the fourth grade. I have now given you enough information to work out how old I am. So she sat beside me with her sewing, because I was only a ten-year-old child. I wanted to play; it was summer. Was I going to sit there studying for examinations? And she would keep me occupied whenever...
Whenever I said, “I’m bored, I’m tired, I’m too hot,” she would say, “Just a little longer.” Then she would give me a sweet or something and coax me along. Blessed be her memory, I tell you. It is not that I could not have done some other kind of work that required no education at all. But education gave me this one thing: the ability to understand Holy Scripture a little and to delight in it. I trust you agree. Now then, “I will pour out” means, as he explains further on, that God gives without measure. Suppose I take a pitcher and pour out the wine: I pour abundantly. Or I might use a dropper. I might take a small carafe designed so that the wine—or whatever the liquid may be—comes out only a little at a time. But here the verb “pour out” means that I take no account of how much is being spent or of any limit, just as with that other expression—
“He scattered”—which appears in the Old Testament and is used by the Apostle Paul. “He received gifts,” it says. God did. What were these gifts? Christ received the gifts: spoils, gifts, the spoils of victory. “He scattered abroad; He gave to the poor.” What does “He scattered” mean there? It does not mean, “Come, you poor, and let me put a few drachmas into your hands,” or even a handful of gold coins. No. I take the gold coins, give them out, and scatter them freely: “Take, take, take!” How much is expressed by the verb “scatter,” and how much by the verb “pour out”! They show how richly God gives His Holy Spirit—or how richly He was going to give Him, since this is a prophecy in Joel declaring what would come to pass. So, if God was to give His Holy Spirit with such abundance, would this not result in a kind of intoxication among those who received the Holy Spirit? This is what Saint Cyril now wishes to say as he interprets the Apostle Peter: “Why do you accuse us of being drunk and speak evil of us? Yes, we are drunk—but with the Spirit of God. Do you want proof? It is written.” You either do not know the prophet Joel, or, if you do know him, you do not understand him or notice every detail of precisely how he expresses himself.
“For God does not give the Spirit by measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.” The Father loves the Son and has given Him everything, placing it all in His hand. And do you know what the words “of My Spirit” mean? “Of My Spirit.” Whose is the Holy Spirit? Whose? He is the Spirit both of the Father and of the Son. Do not forget that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, and is also sent from the Father. And do not forget that the Holy Spirit is sent from the Son as well, though He does not proceed from the Son. “I will send you,” Christ says, “another Comforter.” He proceeds from the Father alone, but He is sent by both the Father and the Son. So whose Spirit is meant here? He is the Spirit of God—God the Father.
And when we spoke earlier in the catechesis of the Spirit of Christ, He is likewise the Spirit of the Son—that is, He is the Holy Spirit. He is the third person of the Holy Trinity. But from this point onward, my dear friends, Saint Cyril enters into the prophecy of Joel and begins to analyze it. Since our time is now up, God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Έχουμε Ευαγγέλιο την πρώτη βδομάδα, πρώτη Παρασκευή των Χαιρετισμών, την πρώτη βδομάδα των νηστειών, και αυτό που διαβάζουμε —αλλά όχι, από εκεί δεν αρχίζουμε— τη Μεγάλη Πέμπτη, στο πρώτο Ευαγγέλιο, που αναφέρεται αυτό: «Εγώ είμαι η άμπελος, υμείς τα κλήματα». Άμπελος είναι η ρίζα, ο κορμός, μαζί με τη ρίζα. Κλήματα είναι οι κληματόβεργες. Δηλαδή αυτό που λέμε εμείς σήμερα κληματόβεργες. «Και εγώ», λέει, «είμαι η άμπελος», λέει το κούτσουρο, ο κορμός. Σεις είσαστε οι κληματόβεργες. Τους χυμούς από πού τους παίρνετε; Από μένα. Γι’ αυτό λέγει ότι «χωρὶς ἐμοῦ οὐ δύνασθε ποιεῖν οὐδέν». Χωρίς εμένα δεν μπορείτε να κάνετε τίποτε. Αυτή η άμπελος, αυτή η εικόνα της αμπέλου, γιατί χρησιμοποιήθηκε από τον Κύριο;
