Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem presents Pentecost as testimony that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity, not an impersonal power. Through Baptism, believers receive the Holy Spirit’s grace and a spiritual crown that grants them royal and priestly dignity in Christ. The Apostles’ miraculous speech in foreign languages demonstrates the Spirit’s power and equips them to proclaim the Gospel to the nations gathered in Jerusalem.

Beloved, we are still in the seventeenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem, concerning the Holy Spirit. We are at paragraph fifteen—page 222, line 32, for those who have my book. “And there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one rested upon each of them; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.” They partook of fire—not a consuming fire, but a saving fire, which destroys the thorns of sin and makes the soul radiant. This fire is also about to come upon you, to remove and consume the thorns of your sins, to make the precious treasure of your soul radiant, and to give you grace. I remind you that Saint Cyril is gathering together, as it were, an anthology of passages from the New Testament, to show how many passages bear witness to the Holy Spirit, Who is given the appropriate name according to each context. A little later we shall hear him say, “I pass over this, I pass over that,” because he selects only a few passages.
For Holy Scripture contains an abundance of passages bearing witness that the Holy Spirit is a person. This is the first and fundamental truth: the Holy Spirit is a person, the third person of the Holy Trinity. Everything else follows from this. Here, then, Saint Cyril refers to the Book of Acts and to the event of Pentecost. He says: “There appeared to the Apostles, and to all those who were there in the upper room—a hundred and twenty souls—divided tongues as of fire.”
A tongue of fire rested upon each one, above his head, and they were all filled—all one hundred and twenty of them—with the Holy Spirit. Of course, the Holy Spirit appeared as fire, and this fire, this likeness of fire, was divided into as many portions as there were people present. Moreover, because fire usually appears as a flame, these were flames; and because a flame is also called a tongue, they were called tongues of fire.
Even in our own language we speak of a “tongue of fire.” As you see, because fire rises upward, it gives the appearance of tongues. Then, after this central fire had been divided, it came in the form of flames and rested upon the head of each person. Before we continue, however, I must clarify something: the Holy Spirit is not divided. Nor did the Holy Spirit come as fire in the sense that He is fire. He certainly did not come as a consuming fire. The image simply shows a distribution from one central body. This distribution does not refer to the Holy Spirit Himself.
Can the Holy Spirit be divided? No. The distribution refers to the gifts. The Holy Spirit gives whatever He gives. We spoke about this in an earlier catechetical lecture. There is a division of the gifts, not a division of the Holy Spirit. Let us pay close attention to this subtle and important point. Saint Cyril says here that “they partook of fire”—that is, they partook of the Holy Spirit in a form like fire—“not a consuming fire, but a saving fire.” It was not a fire that could burn them, but a fire that could save them.
Hell is fire: “the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Hell, then, is fire, but that fire consumes without ever consuming completely. Do you understand what it means to “consume without consuming completely”? It consumes you, yet you never come to an end, and neither does the fire. But Saint Cyril says that this fire of the Holy Spirit is not a consuming fire. It does not come to burn; it comes to save. He then explains this, saying: “It destroys the thorns of sin.”
“And it makes the soul radiant.” It comes to burn away the thornbushes of sin, but also to make the soul radiant, to illumine it, and to glorify it. I hope you will not mind if I repeat something I have told you before. Since there are always some new brothers among us, I often repeat these things. Forgive my habit of repetition. It can be a little tiring, but repetition is part of learning, so do not misunderstand me when I repeat myself. We know that God is uncreated light—uncreated light. What, then, is this fire of Hell? What is it?
It is the uncreated light that proceeds from God—not from the essence of God, for it is a divine uncreated energy—and reaches even as far as Hell. There it is not light that illumines; it possesses only the quality of burning. By contrast, in the Kingdom of God we shall experience the uncreated light without its burning quality; there, only its radiance will remain. It is well known that...
Take a demon-possessed person, for example, to Kefalonia, Zakynthos, or Corfu—to Saint Gerasimos, Saint Dionysios, or Saint Spyridon. You know that many of these demon-possessed people cry out that they are burning: “It burns! It burns! I am burning! I am burning!” What precisely does this “I am burning” mean? Pay attention. The divine uncreated energy has come upon the Saint, who has attained theosis—that is what theosis means. He has received the divine uncreated energy without its burning quality, experiencing only its radiance and glory. And when a demon-possessed person comes before the Saint who bears this uncreated light...
then that uncreated light goes forth toward him, not as radiance, but as burning. This is why the devil, speaking through the mouth of the demon-possessed person, cries out, “I am burning! I am burning!” Saint Basil the Great takes an illustration from nature. In his Hexaemeron—and today we celebrate the Three Holy Hierarchs—Saint Basil the Great says: “A single ray of sunlight possesses both radiance and heat.” Everyone knows this. Can we separate the heat from the radiance? Without question, yes, we can.
If you wish, place a lens in its path. The ray will pass through it, and we shall concentrate the burning heat of its radiation. Or consider a greenhouse: light passes through its glass...
the light passes through, but through the transmission of that light we trap the heat inside the greenhouse. It is not difficult to separate these two properties. The sun—or, more precisely, created light—is, if I may put it this way, an image of that other light, the uncreated light. And just as I can distinguish between radiance and burning heat in created light, so too the uncreated light proceeds from God as radiance.
In the Kingdom of God, the Saints are radiant and glorified. We might say that this radiance conveys every form of blessedness—all the divine uncreated energies of God: love, peace, and so forth. In the Kingdom of God, human beings possess peace surpassing all understanding, love surpassing all understanding, blessedness surpassing all understanding, and so on.
Thank you. By contrast, this divine uncreated energy also proceeds into Hell, and that place becomes Hell precisely because the energy reaches it as burning. Now you can understand two sayings of the Lord that seem contradictory. He spoke of “the outer darkness,” where the fire is never quenched. But how can there be darkness when there is fire? There is fire without radiance. And, if you wish—this has just occurred to me—we know that a distant object can be burned by directing rays at it from below the red portion of the spectrum: infrared rays, not ultraviolet. To put it simply, beyond the colors of the spectrum—the rainbow—if we move into radiation below red, it burns without giving light.
Let me also give you a technical example. Forgive me, but it does no harm. Consider these little asides a way of giving you some rest. How can an airplane photograph a city at night? It is very simple. There are films sensitive to sources of heat—perhaps a fireplace, a heater, or a factory. No light can be seen anywhere because the city is under blackout, yet the heat exposes the film, enabling it to produce an image of the city without visible light.
This means that fire can exist without light.
Let us continue. What, then, does this fire do? “It removes and consumes our thorn-like sins, while making the precious treasure of your soul radiant and giving you grace.” Here, then, we have a distinction: the fire consumes a person’s sins, while the radiance makes that person shine. This happens within every human being from the moment he receives the Spirit of God, and he receives the Spirit of God through Baptism. This is why the catechetical lecture says:
“Fiery tongues rested upon them.” But forgive me; the text says, “This is also about to come upon you.” This Holy Spirit is about to come upon you. Upon whom? Upon you catechumens, who will soon be baptized. How beautiful this is! In other words, as I have been telling you, these things will also happen to you through Baptism. “They rested upon them in the form of fiery tongues, so that new spiritual crowns might be set upon their heads through tongues of fire. Formerly, a flaming sword barred the gates of Paradise; now a saving tongue of fire has restored grace.” There is something very beautiful here...
These tongues of fire rested upon the heads of the Apostles like diadems. A diadem is a crown. They rested upon their heads, then, as new crowns. Truly, tell me: can the crowns people acquire—often through so many crimes, intrigues, and unlawful schemes for rising to power—ever compare with the crowns received by the Apostles, and by every believer at Baptism: the crown of the Holy Spirit placed upon the head? Can they possibly compare? An earthly crown can very easily be trampled underfoot. The one who gains such a crown may be murdered, fall into disgrace, and lose everything. But the person who has received the crown of the Holy Spirit never loses it, provided he does not sin and guards himself. This is why, if I may say once more what I think we discussed last time—perhaps while answering questions; I do not remember—a human being possesses both priestly and royal dignity. We said that Christ possesses a threefold office. Thank you.
The royal and the priestly—the priesthood. The Apostle Peter calls Christians “a royal priesthood.” And John the Evangelist says in the Apocalypse, “God has made us kings and priests.” Whether I say “kings and priests” or “a royal priesthood,” the meaning is the same. How did we become kings? Behold the crown. Therefore, let us not boast—excuse me, I mean complain—about poverty or the absence of worldly rank. Every human office, whatever it may be, is poor by comparison, my beloved. You possess the Holy Spirit; you possess a crown.
It is an immense crown, of immeasurable worth, a crown of reigning together with Christ, and it will accompany you into the Kingdom of God. When we need to offer people a word of consolation in their illness, their poverty, and the hardships of life—when things go badly and take strange turns—what should we do? How should we comfort them? What should we say? Should we say, “Oh, it will pass; God will provide”? No. We must help them—and this is what I am doing for you now—we must help them become aware of the riches they already possess.
As we heard today in the epistle reading for the Three Holy Hierarchs, in that wonderful passage from Hebrews: “For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come”—the city that remains and is never lost. And this is nothing other than the riches of the Holy Spirit, which we have already received in this present life. My beloved, if every believer comes to know this and becomes truly aware of it, there is no greater consolation. That is why the most beneficial and finest preaching is to establish our faithful upon a doctrinal foundation, so that they know the great truths of our faith. Yes, that is what I said.
You see, I am doing nothing different from what Saint Cyril says. And to make this clear, I especially challenge our dear theologians, as well as those who may teach catechism classes or lead Holy Scripture study groups. The challenge comes from Saint Cyril himself. Do you see how a subject is developed? Do you see that we do not sink into what can only be called a sorry state of mere moralizing, constantly speaking about virtues and vices? This is proper catechesis. We will speak about the virtues, and we will speak about the vices. But throughout these catechetical lectures, have you noticed Saint Cyril engaging in moralism at all? Nowhere. Nowhere.
Nowhere. Do we find him saying, “Do not tell lies”? Those of you who have followed these catechetical lectures from the beginning, have you found him saying anywhere, “Do not steal”? Why not? Because once you learn that you are a member of the Body of Christ, and the Apostle Paul says, “Do not lie to one another, for we are members of one another,” how can I lie to someone who is a member of the same body? Could I steal from him? Why? He is my brother. Would I steal from my own brother? And there are two ways in which we are brothers. Those who have been baptized have all come forth from the same baptismal font. It is the same font, because there is one Baptism. As we say, “One Lord, one faith”—forgive me—“one Baptism,” and so forth. There is one Baptism; there are not many baptisms.
And even if they have not been baptized, we still share a common origin and the same essence from Adam and Eve. We are therefore brothers twice over. How, then, could I steal from another person? This is true teaching: teaching founded upon the truths of the Gospel. Then each person understands that he must not steal, must not lie, must not commit fornication, and must not kill. Why teach it in any other way? Do you see what real teaching is? I consider this a model—and it is not merely my opinion; it truly is a model showing how our people ought to be taught. You can see it clearly. We must never offer moral instruction detached from its foundation. We can correct people’s conduct, as one of the troparia of Saint Basil says.
It says that Saint Basil corrected the conduct of the people. Since I have mentioned him, let me give the example we just discussed: “Do not lie to one another.” If I take those words by themselves, they become mere moralizing. We might speak authoritatively to the children in our catechism class, in our school, or in our own homes, and say, “Children, do not tell lies.” But that is neither correct nor complete. The Apostle Paul says, “Do not lie to one another, for we are members of one another.” That is the doctrinal foundation. Why must I not lie? Because we are members of one and the same body, the Body of Christ. Do you see how Christianity sets the matter forth?
Allow me another brief digression. Many people say that other religions, including the religions of the East, also teach morality. But they have no doctrinal foundation. They do not. When another religion, such as Buddhism, tells you that lying is wrong, what does it base that teaching on? What is its foundation? Here, however, we have a foundation. And the Body of Christ is not imaginary. Buddhism may invent an imaginary explanation, if it wishes, for why you should not lie. Some people ask me, “Father, what is the difference between Christianity and the religions of the East?” Here it is: precisely what we are discussing now. Buddhism can invent an imaginary reason why you should not lie.
But when Christianity tells you that we are members of one body, the Body of Christ is not imaginary; it is real. Christ, in His human nature, is in heaven, and in the Mystery we truly and ontologically partake of the Body and Blood of Christ. This is not imaginary or false, something we have simply invented as we see fit in order to support an idea.
It is not, shall we say, a mere convention. It is real. There you have the difference. And whether that difference is small or great hardly needs to be said. Let us continue.
“Formerly, a flaming sword barred the gates of Paradise; now, a saving tongue of fire has restored grace.” It is well known that when our first parents were driven out of Paradise, Paradise was closed. As I have told you, Paradise was a part of our earth, but it had its own distinctive character and exceptional beauty, and so it was called Paradise. It was an entirely earthly, geographical region between the two rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates. What does it mean, then, that our first parents departed from that place? Do people not live in that region today? That is where Iraq is.
And Iran. Do people not live there? What, then, is this flaming sword? A rhomphaia is a sword, a blade. But instead of a metal blade, this one has a flame. Think of a blowtorch that releases gas—perhaps bottled gas—and, once lit under pressure, sends a flame shooting outward. You see? The flame reaches far ahead. This is also how the Holy Archangel Michael is sometimes depicted: holding a sword that is aflame. Instead of a blade, there is fire. And what does it mean that the sword turns in every direction? Imagine that this little path is the road, and there is a gate.
At the gate is the flaming sword. It turns and sweeps around, so you cannot pass. If it stood still, you might deceive the one holding it, slip past, and enter Paradise again without the flaming sword striking you. But because it turns, you cannot pass anywhere. What does this mean? Is there literally a road? Is there literally a flaming sword, and so forth? Genesis says, “He appointed the Cherubim there to guard the entrance.” This signifies humanity’s inability to enter the Kingdom of God, because man bore three things: sinfulness and mortality.
And materiality. Let me say them again: sinfulness, mortality, and materiality. First, sinfulness: how could you enter the Kingdom of God while remaining sinful? Second, mortality: wherever you go, you will die. Even if you could go to the Kingdom of God, you would die. Do you wish to travel to some planet or constellation? You will die. You carry mortality within you. And then there is materiality: man possesses a material body that cannot enter the Kingdom of God as it is. Therefore, if you are to enter the Kingdom of God, neither sin nor mortality will permit you.
Nor will materiality permit you. To portray this reality, Genesis gives us the image of a sword turning in every direction. That is the word used in the book of Genesis: “turning.” The entrance is guarded so that Adam cannot return. But how could Adam return? He would die. Saint Cyril is speaking to us here about these three things. Did you hear it? Let me read it to you again: “Formerly, a flaming sword barred the gates of Paradise.” That flaming sword once barred the way. “Now, a saving tongue of fire has restored grace.”
What is meant by the tongue here? We would call it a flame: the flame of the Holy Spirit.
It restores the grace that our first parents had lost and enables them to enter the Kingdom of God. How does this happen? Listen carefully. I have told you this before, but it is wonderful. Human materiality was overcome. Listen closely to this, and you will see another way in which Christianity differs from other religions. Human materiality was overcome through the Incarnation of the Son of God, because He brought the materiality of the human body into the Kingdom of God. Christ ascended bodily into heaven, so that man might dwell in heaven. This is why Christ is called...
“The firstborn among many brethren.” How, then, was materiality overcome? Through the Incarnation. The Incarnation was necessary; without it, we could never have gone to heaven. Second, how was sinfulness overcome? Through the Cross of Christ, for there the sins of humanity were forgiven. And how was mortality overcome? The human nature of Christ rose on the third day. Does Buddhism or any of the religions of the East have anything comparable? Do they have anything like this? Nothing. Nothing at all. And these are events; they are not...
Fabrications or inventions. So now the tongue of fire, the Spirit of God, opens the way. The first Paraclete opened the way, and so does the second Paraclete. Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit open the way. Then there was a flame that barred the way; now there is a flame that restores what was lost. It is astonishing. Paragraph sixteen: “And they began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” This is from the Acts of the Apostles, which tells us that they began...
Those who were in the upper room began to speak foreign languages—other tongues—as the Spirit enabled them to speak. “Gave them utterance” means that He gave them the ability to speak. If you ask why this fire appeared in the form of tongues, I would offer one more reason. The first visible gift that would be given to the Apostles—not strictly the first gift, but the first outwardly visible one—was the ability to speak foreign languages. For this reason, the Spirit of God now comes in the form of tongues. I first called this the first gift, and then said it was not exactly the first. Yes, the first things the disciples received were...
Boldness, courage, and the awareness of their adoption as sons: that God is the Father and that the Son is truly the Son of God, since He sent His Holy Spirit. Other gifts, then, came first and created this awareness within the disciples; afterward, they began to speak foreign languages. “Peter and Andrew were Galileans, yet one spoke Persian and another Median; John and the other Apostles spoke every language of the nations.” What were Peter and Andrew, who were brothers? They were Galileans. Had they perhaps attended foreign-language institutes? And yet, Saint Cyril says, one spoke Persian and another Median—that is, they spoke the languages of Persia and Media.
Median. Or John. All of them, he says, spoke every language spoken by those from abroad—that is, by the Jews from outside Judea—all the foreign languages. “For it was not only now that the multitude of foreigners began to gather here from every land, but from that time onward.” He probably means this: every year the Hebrews would gather here in Jerusalem to continue their worship at the Temple. Yet, unfortunately—or perhaps fortunately—the Temple no longer existed. We are in A.D. 350; these words were spoken in A.D. 350. The Temple was no longer there; it had been demolished long before.
“Your servants,” it says, “take pleasure in her stones.” Listen to this three-line verse! Oh, I could speak to you about it for an hour, my dear ones. “Your servants take pleasure in her stones.” Who are these servants? The people of Jerusalem—that is, your servants, your people—will grieve over the stones of Jerusalem.
They will weep over their lost glory and venerate the remains of the Temple. This continues to this day—to this very day. Those of you who have been to Jerusalem will have seen it, and others may have seen it in photographs. A section of the wall survives, not of the Temple itself. Nothing at all remains of the Temple. A portion of the wall that surrounded Mount Zion still stands, and there the Jews go to venerate, weep, pray, and so forth, even to this day. But Christians also come now to venerate at that place, as they still do today. So, whether they are Jews or Christians, they come as pilgrims. Saint Cyril is telling his catechumens that pilgrims coming there is nothing new; it is an ancient custom.
Let me read it again: “For it was not only now that the multitude of foreigners began to gather here from every land, but from that time onward.” What does he say next? “What teacher can be found who teaches, all at once, things his pupils have never learned?” What teacher, gentlemen, can teach everything at once, in a single moment—all of it together? Imagine suddenly being able to say, “I know English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Greek.” All at once! What teacher could teach all those languages? “After so many years of grammar and other studies, they learn only to speak Greek well.”
You sit down to learn a language—in this case, Greek, which Saint Cyril obviously mastered perfectly. His catechetical lectures prove it. These lectures were not written in Hebrew or Aramaic and then translated into Greek. This is the original text; the original is Greek. Saint Cyril spoke Greek. The whole world spoke Greek. It is well known that Latin was used in legal matters and was the official language, but Greek was spoken in matters of culture. Therefore, if anyone wished to...
...converse with others, he had to speak Greek. That is why Paul’s epistles were written in Greek, and why the Gospels were also written in Greek, except for Matthew, which was written in Hebrew and was probably translated by Matthew himself. So we can see the place held by the Greek language. But here Saint Cyril asks, “How long does it take you to learn Greek?” And he adds, “And not everyone speaks it equally well.”
We were speaking about knowing a language from a literary point of view. Someone may teach the language, of course, yet not know its literature—that is, what has been written in that language. Do you see? “But the Holy Spirit teaches many languages at once, languages which they had not known throughout all their lives.” The Spirit of God teaches many languages. “This is truly great wisdom; this is divine power.” This is the power of God; this is the truth of God; here is wisdom. But if you ask...
Let me finish the passage: “What comparison can there be between their ignorance over so long a time and the sudden operation of many different foreign languages, given to them all at once?” What comparison is there? What is the difference between spending years learning one language and suddenly learning many languages, all at once? Can the two even be compared? Since I have mentioned languages, however—and without reopening the whole subject, since this is not the time—the Pentecostals, the members of the Christian Organization of Peace here in Larissa, claim that they speak foreign languages. Do not laugh. What do they call the group here—the Christian Organization of Peace? Take care: they are heretics, and they claim to speak foreign languages. What they utter is merely inarticulate sound.
They themselves do not even know what they are saying. “What did you just say?” The speaker himself does not know. Did he understand anything? It resembles the speaking in tongues found in spiritualism. Do you hear? A person under hypnosis in spiritualism may speak Chinese, though he has never learned it, or write Chinese, though he has never learned the Chinese script. But when he comes out of the hypnotic state, he can neither speak nor write Chinese. Someone else knows Chinese, and that someone is the devil. Thus, the hypnotized person has no conscious knowledge of the foreign language or foreign script. And here these poor people...
...claim something similar. They know nothing of what they are saying. And then, what is the purpose? Do you know why languages were given as one of the first gifts? They were given to serve a purpose. Beyond the miracle itself, which truly astonished the crowds, there was a practical purpose: that they might hear the Gospel of Christ. That is why every listener present—Medes, Parthians, Cretans, Libyans, and the rest, all of whom had crowded into Jerusalem and will be listed in the passage—said, “I hear the preaching in my own language.” In my own language! This is exceedingly great and important. There were practical purposes.
The purpose was for the preaching to be heard. If you like, a small remnant of this speaking in tongues remains at Pascha, when, to proclaim the message of Christ’s Resurrection, we read it in many languages. Today, of course, this is purely ornamental—if you will, a decorative piece, a relic, a memorial: the fact that we read it in many languages. In the cathedral, whether in Athens or here in Larissa, you will all have heard three, five, or ten priests, as many as are available, each read the Gospel in a different language. It is a remnant, just as the Artoklasia, the blessing of the loaves, commemorates the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand.
Language serves another purpose as well. The Apostle Paul himself certainly spoke all those languages. Someone might point to Pentecost and then to the same thing happening in the household of Cornelius; we shall see this in the passage from Acts that we read on Sunday. But pay attention here. The Apostle Paul himself rebukes and chastises the Corinthians because they had gone astray. When they received speaking in tongues as a gift of the Holy Spirit, they treated it as an end in itself rather than as a means. They began to boast and grow proud. And the Apostle Paul tells them, “I speak in tongues...”
“...more than all of you.” And what do you imagine—that tongues are what will contribute to your salvation? Far from it. For this very reason, the Apostle Paul already makes clear that speaking in tongues is not the central matter, because the Spirit of God had other gifts to bestow, incomparably higher than speaking in tongues. Thus, this gift served a particular purpose and then disappeared. The Pentecostals ask, “Why is there no speaking in tongues today?” Or take that poor Papastefanos in America, an Orthodox clergyman who is nevertheless a Pentecostal and remains...
I will say more about that later; he remains as he is. And they ask, “Why does the Church not possess speaking in tongues today? This is a sign that the Orthodox Church does not have the Holy Spirit.” Listen to that—just listen! Yet even in the age of the Apostles, this gift had already begun to recede. We could say that the whole Church after the Apostles, represented by the Apostolic Fathers, did not possess the gift of speaking in tongues. Saint Ignatius, Saint Polycarp, and the others did not have it. It was confined to the Apostles for practical reasons and as a visible sign, so that the people might be struck by the miracle.
They had no other way of perceiving the truth of the Gospel. But once things had settled down, the Church was at work in the world, and there was no longer any reason for something spectacular. For when we now expound the Gospel, and each person enters more deeply into it and advances in the life of faith, what value would speaking in tongues have? This shows you the position taken by the heretics, who seek to reproduce the phenomenon of speaking in tongues, even though it was never reproduced anywhere in history. And we could add something else, if you wish. Very well, the phenomenon of speaking in tongues did not appear even among the Apostolic Fathers—Saint Ignatius, Saint Polycarp, and the others. So I ask: did it appear anywhere throughout the whole course of these two thousand years?
Do these people come so late in history and claim that they possess the Spirit of God, while the Church, throughout the course of two thousand years, did not possess the Holy Spirit? I ask you. See what absurd conclusions they reach without even realizing it.
The seventh paragraph: “Confusion arose among the multitude who heard them—a second confusion, the antitype of the first, evil confusion at Babylon. For in the confusion of tongues there was a division of wills, because their purpose was opposed to God; but here there was a restoration and union of minds, because the aim being pursued was godly.” The meaning is this: there is also a troparion for the day of Pentecost that speaks of the same meaning Saint Cyril sets before us here.
The Spirit of God appeared in the form of tongues of fire. We have seen the first reason, the second, and the third. What was the first? To replace the flaming sword. What was the second? That they were to speak foreign languages. Indeed, allow me to mention something else; I may have told you this last year as well. Because the fire was divided among them, it reveals the distinct persons and their personal gifts. Peter has certain gifts, John has others, and Paul still others. God arranged it in this way because these are personal gifts, bestowed by the Spirit of God to reveal the uniqueness of each person.
Thus, the gifts are personal. Do you know how profoundly important this is? That is why, within the Church, the Apostle Paul himself gives us this wonderful image: the image of the body. A body, he says, has eyes; a body has hands; a body has feet—many members. But when we say “body,” we mean the feet, the hands, and the eyes together. And according to the needs of the Church, the Spirit of God gives gifts to people. One person has this gift, another has that one, and another has something else. Not everyone possesses the same gifts, and so the distinctiveness of each person is both preserved and revealed. We have come, then, to what I called the third reason; let me call it the fourth. It is well known that, after the flood, human arrogance...
They began to grow numerous and wanted to leave the place where their forefathers, beginning with Noah, had lived. They wanted to spread across the earth and move farther away, which was entirely natural. Then they said, “Come, let us build a structure, a tower that reaches up to heaven.” You know that some of those towers, perhaps two or three, have survived in Babylon to this day. Did you know that? One of them is very large, and it is thought to be the Tower of Babel itself. Babel means confusion—the tower of confusion. It covers an enormous area.
For it to rise so high, it had to cover a very large area and rest on immensely deep foundations. So, my dear ones, they began to build. Do you know what their sin was? Their sin was not merely that they said, “Let us reach heaven.” This too was a kind of repetition of the ancestral sin, a kind of self-made theosis: “Let us reach heaven; let us conquer heaven.” But they sought something else as well, something equivalent to the ancestral sin. Pay close attention here, because this is repeated in every age. They sought a visible center of unity and a common point of reference.
A material monument. What did I say? A center of unity and a common point of reference. We might say that today the United Nations is a point of reference or a center of unity for the peoples of the earth. But the United Nations, at least outwardly, is a human institution. So whether we have a monument or, if you prefer, that enormous building in Brussels which, they say, is to be built—or perhaps has already been built, I do not know—or the European Economic Community itself: there it is, with its headquarters in Brussels. Think about that. It is a repetition of the Tower of Babel. I do not know, but I think that you—and perhaps all of us—will live to see what we call the European Economic Community fall into a thousand pieces.
The whole thing is incompatible in its very structure. Remember my words. I do not know when it will happen; I am not a prophet. But it is like that statue of Nebuchadnezzar, which Nebuchadnezzar saw and Daniel interpreted. Its feet, he says, were made of clay and iron, showing the dissimilarity of the peoples of the earth who had been conquered at that time. Forgive me—the prophecy there concerns the Romans. The gold represented the Babylonians, the silver the Macedonian dynasty, the bronze the Romans—or am I stating it correctly? Yes, the Medo-Persians, then bronze—and finally iron and clay, earthenware clay. Its feet, he says, were made in this way...
...because union was impossible. Iron does not unite with clay. We have the same thing here. I am not engaging in politics. Do not go out and accuse me of speaking politically. It is evident from the nature of the thing itself. It is evident—plainly evident. But even if it were not evident, we faithful could still discern it. And it is founded upon arrogance, like a new Tower of Babel. In the future, this Tower of Babel will serve its purpose even more fully when the Antichrist makes use of it through the number 666. Do you see how many times the Tower of Babel is repeated? It is repeated because it is a material point of reference and unity. And God comes to destroy this...
...point of reference. And how does He destroy it? By leading the people into a confusion of languages. God did not desire that kind of union; He desired unity in the Holy Spirit. Thus, at Babel, that union was destroyed through the confusion of languages. And now the Holy Spirit comes in the form of tongues, bringing harmony of understanding, thought, and so forth, and becoming the common point of reference. That point of reference will no longer be something material, but the Spirit of God. And wherever the Spirit of God is, there is true unity. That is all for tonight, my dear ones. May the Lord bless you.

«Λαμπρύνοντος δὲ τὴν ψυχήν». Έρχεται να κάψει τις αγκαθιές των αμαρτιών, αλλά και να λαμπρύνει και να φωτίσει και να δοξάσει την ψυχή. Δεν πειράζει αν σας επαναλάβω κάτι που κάποιες φορές σας το έχω πει, αλλά επειδή πάντοτε έχουμε κάποιους καινούργιους αδελφούς, γι' αυτό κάνω τις επαναλήψεις πολλές φορές. Συγγνώμη, έχω αυτό το πνεύμα των επαναλήψεων. Είναι λίγο κουραστικό, αλλά είναι όμως στοιχείον μαθήσεως. Μη με παρεξηγείτε αν τα επαναλαμβάνω. Είναι γνωστό ότι ο Θεός είναι άκτιστον φως. Άκτιστον φως. Αυτό το πυρ της κολάσεως τι είναι; Τι είναι;
Δεν είχαν άλλη δυνατότητα να αντιληφθούν την αλήθεια του Ευαγγελίου. Όταν όμως τα πράγματα ηρέμησαν, η Εκκλησία εργάζεται πια μέσα στον κόσμο. Δεν υπάρχει λόγος πλέον να υπάρχει κάτι το φανταχτερό. Διότι, όταν αυτή τη στιγμή εμείς αναλύουμε το Ευαγγέλιο και εμβαθύνει ο καθένας και προχωρεί στη μύηση, ποια είναι η αξία μιας γλωσσολαλίας; Για να καταλάβετε πώς τοποθετούνται οι αιρετικοί, που θέλουν να επαναλάβουν, ενώ δεν επανελήφθη ποτέ μέσα στην ιστορία, το φαινόμενο της γλωσσολαλίας. Και θα λέγαμε ακόμη, αν θέλετε, κάτι άλλο. Καλά, το φαινόμενο της γλωσσολαλίας δεν παρουσιάστηκε ούτε στους Αποστολικούς Πατέρες, Άγιος Ιγνάτιος, Άγιος Πολύκαρπος κλπ. Ερωτώ: καθ’ όλο το μήκος των 2.000 ετών;
