Summary

Saint Cyril emphasizes that Pentecost occurred in Jerusalem, presenting Christianity as a faith grounded in historical events such as Christ’s Resurrection and Ascension. In the Divine Liturgy, the Spirit descends upon both the faithful and the offered gifts, sanctifying the people and transforming the bread and wine into Christ’s Body and Blood. The apostolic witness rests on concrete experience—hearing, seeing, and touching—affirming that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, truly became human.

Beloved, we are now in the thirteenth paragraph of Saint Cyril’s seventeenth catechetical lecture. In the opening lines, we saw the Holy Father say that they had to remain in Jerusalem and wait, expecting, as he says, the coming of the Holy Spirit: “When the day of Pentecost had fully come,” and so forth. Here he makes a digression—Saint Cyril has made this point before—because he wants to make certain things tangible to us, especially the historical events.

He is speaking of the event of Pentecost, and he makes this very beautiful and characteristic statement: “Great is the honor here, in this city, Jerusalem.” In other words, when Pentecost took place, it happened here, in this very city, Jerusalem. This has immense value and significance, because it emphasizes that what happened was an actual event. Our faith is founded upon events. I will always tell you this, so do not forget it: this is precisely what sets Christianity apart from every other religion. All other religions express—what do they express?—human nature and the human longing to encounter God. They are religions devised by human thought. The desire to seek God has been planted within us; God Himself placed it there. But because we do not find Him, we invent ways of convincing ourselves that we have found God. The proof is that we take creation itself, make it into a god, deify it, bow down before it, and worship it. Is that not perfectly obvious?

A religion devised by human thought. That means: it comes out of my own head. I invent this religion. I construct it myself and say this and that, and declare that things must be such and such. I create a religious system—that is, a religion—and people begin to accept it, and so on. All religions are human inventions and therefore cannot save. Christianity consists of events. Christ rose from the dead: that is an event. Christ ascended: that is an event. Pentecost is an event. So, what for a moment we might call—and we are grateful that the Holy Father...

regards it as—a privilege, is in fact something far greater than a privilege. Its immense value is that he is speaking about things that truly happened. That is why he says here, “In this city of mine, in this Jerusalem, Pentecost took place.” He now expresses a rightful pride. We Greeks might likewise say: here we built the Parthenon; here this or that happened; here philosophy was born. This is the privilege of a people, and every people may have privileges in which it can take pride—but not in a barren, unproductive way. That pride must bear fruit. If you boast that your ancestors were philosophers, why are you, their descendants...

a people without philosophy? Why does your thought not penetrate deeply enough to see things more clearly and profoundly? You are a foolish, senseless people, yet you boast of wise and philosophical ancestors. Does this not become an accusation against you? You may take pride, then, but your pride must not be barren, because otherwise it turns against you as an accusation. Your boasting itself becomes your condemnation. “For this honor also belongs to us,” Saint Cyril says. This privilege is ours as well: that here, in this city, there took place...

Pentecost. Do you remember an earlier catechetical lecture—last year or the year before, I think; I do not remember exactly—where he says that here the Mystical Supper took place, here was the upper room, here the Crucifixion occurred, and so forth? Indeed, he delivered his teaching inside the Church of the Resurrection, which, as we know, enclosed Christ’s tomb. It is awe-inspiring; it is astonishing. Jesus was buried here. Saint Cyril could have pointed it out with his own finger to the catechumens. The privilege, then, is ours. “We speak not of blessings that occurred among others, but of those bestowed here among us.” We are not speaking of things that happened somewhere else...

but of things bestowed upon us here. “When Pentecost, therefore, had come...” He returns to his subject, because in the text this remark is placed in parentheses, between dashes. In other words, he does not dwell on the privilege simply as a matter of honor. He states it and moves on, and what he says is very beautiful: “When Pentecost, therefore, had come, they were sitting, and the Paraclete descended from heaven.” Saint Cyril now returns to the subject and says that, when Pentecost arrived and the disciples were sitting together, they were not merely the Twelve. Matthias had been chosen in Judas’s place, but there were one hundred and twenty people gathered there—one hundred and twenty. And the Paraclete came.

Here he gives a series of descriptions of the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit. They are very beautiful. I shall read them all to you—they are not many—and then we shall briefly examine the picture they present. The Paraclete came from heaven: the guardian and sanctifier of the Church, the director of souls, the helmsman of those tossed by storms, the light and guide of those who have gone astray, the one who sets the contest before those who struggle, and the one who crowns those who have conquered. Beautiful descriptions. And as John Chrysostom says, whenever you proclaim—as I told you last time...

whenever you proclaim the attributes of the Holy Spirit, you offer doxology to God. But those attributes must be Orthodox, for if they are not Orthodox, they are no longer doxology but blasphemy. What does Saint Cyril call the Holy Spirit here? The guardian and sanctifier of the Church. Why does he call the Holy Spirit the guardian of the Church? What does He guard? First of all, He guards the truth. I could say a great deal here, but allow me to move quickly and not enter into everything. In this matter, the safeguarding...

of the Church’s truth is accomplished through the Synods, which preserve the truth in the Holy Spirit. This is what is called the synodal system, through which the Church preserves the truth. The Church accepts that the Synods were guided by the Holy Spirit. Their conclusions follow the form used at the first Apostolic Council, which took place in Jerusalem while the Apostles were still alive—and for this reason it is called the Apostolic Council—when certain questions had arisen. These concerned food offered to idols, meat from strangled animals, sexual immorality...

and circumcision, for that was where the dispute began: was circumcision required or not? The Church of Jerusalem gathered—the Apostles who were present, though not all of them, since many were already elsewhere; perhaps two, three, four, or five, however many were there; Saint James the Brother of the Lord; the priests; and the people. You see, the whole Church was present. Yet it is called Apostolic because Apostles were in attendance. And what does it say? “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit...” and so forth. This is the form in which the Council’s conclusion was expressed. It was written down and sent to Antioch, to the Christians there, so that they might...

be at peace, because the question had arisen there and Jerusalem had been consulted about it. The issue was whether a person had to undergo circumcision, and so forth. As I said, circumcision was the principal matter. The Apostle Paul in particular insisted that circumcision no longer counted for anything, that in Christ Jesus circumcision was abolished. You see the form that was used. This document was entrusted to Christians—indeed, to Apostles—who carried it and delivered it to the Church of Antioch. Thankfully, Saint Luke recorded it in the Acts of the Apostles. You see the wording: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.”

It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us that this and this should be done. Thus, it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us—neither to us apart from the Holy Spirit, nor to the Holy Spirit apart from us. Why not apart from us? Because we too have received the Spirit of God. Does not the Apostle Paul say somewhere, “I have no explicit command from Christ, from the Lord, concerning virgins”? He says something like that, does he not? I think it is in—where is it? The first chapter—excuse me, the seventh chapter of First Corinthians. “I have no command,” he says, but then, in offering his judgment, adds, “I think that I also have the Spirit of God.” The Spirit of God could not work through people who were devoid of the Holy Spirit. Would you like me to show you this by another example? In the Divine Liturgy, when the priest reaches the heart of the Epiclesis and the consecration of the Precious Gifts, he asks God the Father to send down His Holy Spirit “upon us and upon these Gifts here offered.” He asks Him to send the Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts, so that they—which gifts? The wine and the bread—may be changed by the Holy Spirit into the Body and Blood of Christ.

Why does he ask that the Holy Spirit be sent first upon us, and then that the bread and wine be changed into the Body and Blood of Christ? What benefit would there be in that change if the faithful did not possess the Spirit of God? They must have the Spirit of God in order to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Thus, the truths of the faith cannot be present without the Spirit of God dwelling in the faithful, nor can the faithful be separated from those truths. Both are necessary. That is why it says, “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.” It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.

And so forth. Only then could we say that something is divinely inspired and infallible—divinely inspired and infallible. This is how the Holy Spirit is the guardian. I do not know whether I have managed to help you understand how the Holy Spirit guards the Church—that is, how He guards the truth of the Church. This is a great matter. The Holy Spirit is also the sanctifier of the Church: He makes the faithful into Saints. Can we speak about spiritual life without the Holy Spirit? Does that make any sense? Can you speak of a sweet without sugar? Can you speak of ice cream if it is not frozen?

Can we, then, speak of Saints without the Spirit who sanctifies? It is the Spirit who sanctifies, who makes the members of the Church holy, because He gives spiritual life. He is the director of souls, the One who truly directs them. He is the helmsman of those tossed by storms, the One who truly guides those who are being battered by the tempest. I shall remind you of something from Saint Cyril’s previous catechetical lecture on the Holy Spirit, which shows how He is the helmsman of those in the storm. The Holy Spirit comes and whispers into the martyr’s ear:

“Endure just a little longer, just a little longer, and you will receive the blessings of the Kingdom of God.” What is He doing here? He is truly guiding the soul so that it may reach the Kingdom of God. He comes and says, “Endure a little longer, and you will reach the Kingdom of God.” Then comes another description: the light and guide of those who have gone astray. A person who has gone astray is someone who has lost his way. We lose our way especially when it is dark, when it is night; we cannot find the road and wander from it. A light shows us where the road lies.

Even here on our roads, though the routes are clearly marked and paved with asphalt, we still put up lights, because a car might leave the road. In the same way, every faithful Christian must receive the light of the Holy Spirit so as not to go astray. And if he has gone astray, he needs the Spirit of God to illumine him and lead him back. The Holy Spirit is also the one who sets the contest before those who struggle. Do you know what it means to set a contest? It means to appoint a prize and establish a contest, and then to say, “Go forward and struggle.” You can see this in the person of Jesus Christ. I mentioned it while answering your questions: after His Baptism, the Holy Spirit led Him into the wilderness...

“to be tempted by the devil,” as it says. He was led by the Holy Spirit to be tempted by the devil. Why He was to be tempted belongs to another paragraph. In essence, Christ did not go there simply to be tempted; He went precisely in order to conquer the devil. He went out seeking him. It is as though He said what we might describe in this way—how shall I put it? A father has a child, and someone leads his child astray. The father goes out with a sword or a knife and says, “You scoundrel, you led my child astray! I will find you; you will not escape me!” That is the meaning.

It is as though the Lord, the Word (Logos) of God who made our first parents, were saying, “Ah, Satan, you led My creatures astray. I have come out to meet you. You will not escape Me!” That is what this encounter with Satan means. And in imitation of Christ, the Saints who went out into the deserts—the ascetics—went not only to conquer the passions, but also to encounter Satan and wrestle with him. It is an awe-inspiring thing, truly awe-inspiring: they sought the struggle. But do not misunderstand this, because some people may draw mistaken conclusions. Great care is needed. No one should deliberately expose himself to temptations and say, “Ah, now I will fight!” Be careful; this requires great discernment. God forbid that anyone should do such a thing. So, who led the Lord into the wilderness to be tempted—yes, to be tempted? Who was it? The Holy Spirit. What does this tell us? The Holy Spirit is the One who sets the contest: He appoints the struggle, the trial...

calls the human person to struggle; and when the person is victorious, the Holy Spirit then crowns those who have won. He comes to crown those who have been victorious. For example, a child is born, grows up, reaches adolescence, and faces temptations. These temptations have not been removed from the earth, because the devil tempts people; yet in the deeper sense, it is the Spirit of God who sets the contest before us. When you overcome the temptation of fornication and immorality and enter into the communion of Holy Matrimony, the Church

places those crowns upon you to show that you have been victorious in the arena, especially over sins of the flesh. You have won! Invisibly, the Holy Spirit crowns you because you have prevailed in the contest set before you. I ask all who have guarded themselves to rejoice. And let those who did not guard themselves also rejoice when they repent. We now come to the fourteenth paragraph: “He descended to clothe the Apostles with power and to baptize them.”

For it is the Lord who baptizes when we perform the baptism. “You shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” The Spirit of God also descended, he says, to clothe them with power. As we said last time, to clothe means that something comes and fills every part of a person on every side, just as water leaves no empty space but covers the whole body. “You shall be baptized,” as the Lord said, “with the Holy Spirit,” not many days from now—that is, very soon. The grace was not partial; the power was complete in itself. Now the grace was not partial, as it had been when the Lord, on the first day of His Resurrection,

breathed upon His disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” You remember that we examined this last Monday. But now the power comes complete in itself—that is, in its full and entire measure. There will never be another Pentecost, some further Pentecost greater than this Pentecost. There is one Pentecost. The Spirit of God descended once and bestowed the fullness of His gift. I say this once again because of the heretics—I have told you before—such as the so-called Christian Organization of Peace, whose numbers have begun to grow greatly here in Greece, and unfortunately...

Larissa was one of the first cities, after Athens and Thessaloniki, where they began their work. Unfortunately, they are present and lead people astray, claiming that Pentecost is undergoing a continual development, so that we today supposedly understand the New Testament better than the Apostles did in their own time. The very thought is absurd—that we understand better than the Apostle Peter and the Apostle Paul. But how do we understand anything? By whose power? Pay close attention here: it is through their writings, because we possess their writings—the Gospels and the Epistles—and on the basis of these we understand. Otherwise, what would we believe?

Did the sacred authors of the New Testament write like robots? Did they write things they themselves did not understand, so that we might understand them today? That is not merely foolish but senseless and confused. Did the Apostles have no awareness of what they were writing? This shows you how heretics think and how easily their claims can be refuted. But do they understand? No, they do not. To understand, they must possess something of the Spirit of God and have a good disposition. Yet it appears that those who direct this movement do not even have a good disposition. I do not mean those who are being led astray. They may one day be saved and helped. But those who direct the movement

do not have the Spirit of God enabling them to understand, and that is why they say such things. “For just as one who enters the water and is baptized is surrounded on every side by the water, so they too were baptized completely by the Spirit.” Completely. Just as one who is immersed in water and baptized is surrounded everywhere by water, so too, he says, they were baptized completely by the Holy Spirit. Do you see? Above, he said “complete in itself,” meaning fully. Here he says “completely,” meaning entirely. Nothing remained that did not receive the Spirit of God. In other words, the whole human person received the

Spirit of God—everything the Spirit of God had to offer, everything God wished to bestow upon humanity. “Water is poured around the body from without, but the Spirit baptizes the soul within, leaving nothing untouched.” Water, he says, is poured over us from the outside, but the Spirit baptizes the soul inwardly as well. “And why do you marvel?” In other words, why are you astonished? I shall now read you something and then explain it in my own words. He says: “Take a bodily example—small and humble, yet useful for those of simpler understanding.”

Saint Cyril says, “I shall give you a little example. It is a small one, but useful for those who cannot understand many things.” It is “for those of simpler understanding”—those who are not highly educated and do not easily comprehend. So I shall give this little example.

“Fire passes through the dense substance of iron and, entering within it, makes the whole iron like fire; what was cold becomes hot.” What was cold becomes hot. “What was black becomes radiant.” Or the body—that is, if we speak of the body. “If fire, entering a body such as iron, acts in this way without hindrance, why do you marvel that the Holy Spirit enters into the innermost depths of the soul?” It is like fire entering into a piece of iron.

The fire penetrates the piece of iron. When we heat the iron until it glows red, the fire has entered the whole piece of iron. In the same way, the Spirit of God enters the whole human person. That is Saint Cyril’s example. We now come to the fifteenth paragraph: “Behold, as this grace descended, a herald of its greatness sounded forth like a heavenly trumpet. For suddenly there came from heaven a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, announcing the presence of Him who bestows grace upon humanity.” The Kingdom of God is taken by force.

“So that eyes might see the fiery tongues and ears might hear the sound.” Such abundant grace was descending! Could this descending grace have passed unnoticed? Of course not! Therefore, so that this grace—the descent of the Holy Spirit—would not pass unnoticed, something announced it beforehand like a trumpet, a heavenly trumpet sounding to proclaim the descending grace: the Spirit of God coming to bestow grace. And what was it?

It was what Saint Luke the Evangelist records in Acts: “For suddenly there came from heaven a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind.” It was that mighty rushing sound, a sound whose source no one could identify. You remember that the people all around began to wonder, “What is happening? What is this sound?” Let me offer a small example of my own. Perhaps you have felt the rumbling that comes just before an earthquake strikes—perhaps a second beforehand, or something like that—when a roar is heard.

They would say, “What is that? What is happening?” And before one has time to turn and see what is happening, the earth begins to shake. In the same way, we might say, there came a rushing breath, a roaring like the breath of wind. It was not wind; not even a leaf was moving. But it was like a breath of wind producing a great noise. That is why the people in Jerusalem wondered what was happening. First, this gave the Apostles themselves testimony of the descent of the Holy Spirit—notice, through one of their senses, their hearing. Then the people outside, throughout the city, also perceived it with their ears.

When they began asking what it was, they sought its cause: “Why have all these things happened? What is going on?” And as they searched for the cause, they came to the upper room where the disciples were. In other words, the Holy Spirit gathered them there so that, as you see, the Apostle Peter could speak, and three thousand people could believe through that first sermon. If you consider that not everyone believed, and that on the following day he spoke again and two thousand believed, then the rest of the crowd must have numbered many thousands—especially since it was the feast and many visitors were present. This shows how many thousands of people had gathered there.

How were they led there? By the thing that summoned them and brought them: that mighty, rushing sound. It sounded like a very powerful wind. But they also had to see with their eyes. Yet I shall not speak of that just now; Saint Cyril will tell us a little further on. The important point is that the Holy Spirit had to make His coming known, to give a sign of His coming. “So that eyes might see the fiery tongues and ears might hear the sound.” Their eyes also had to see. This was a second sense.

The Holy Spirit appeared as tongues like fire. My beloved, the Holy Spirit is neither wind nor tongues of fire, but appeared like tongues of fire and sounded like wind. Let us briefly comment on this. The people heard the sound, but they did not see the fiery tongues. The disciples both heard the sound and saw the fiery tongues. Here we see a distinction, a difference, between those in the world who receive the Spirit of God and those who have not received Him. The world becomes aware that the Spirit of God is present

in the faithful who have received Him through their conduct, their way of life, and their spiritual gifts. The world sees these things, but it can see and understand nothing further. It cannot. Those people must themselves receive the Spirit of God in order to understand. This is how the distinction arises. Yet the fact that the disciples received the message through two senses is very important, because it gave them two witnesses to the event. They could have said, “Wait a moment—I heard a roar. Did you hear it too? And you? And you?”

Very well, but could we perhaps have been mistaken? Then confirmation came through yet another sense: sight. And as you know, sight is the royal sense, a particularly important one. Thus they both heard and saw. Does this matter? If it did not, Saint John the Evangelist would not have written in the opening of his First Catholic Epistle—an opening equal in worth, spiritual height, and majesty to the prologue of the Gospel according to John, the Gospel bearing his own name—these words:

“That which concerns the Word (Logos) of life, which we have seen.”

“We have seen.” Indeed, he repeats it; he says it twice. First he says, “We have seen,” and then, “We have seen with our own eyes.” He also says, “We have looked upon.” The verb used here means to observe something attentively. Why does he use this apparent repetition, “We have seen with our own eyes”? We say the same thing in everyday speech when we want to give firm testimony: “I saw it with my own eyes.” What else would you see with, if not your eyes? Why add the words “with your own eyes”? To give the certainty of eyewitness testimony. “And our hands have touched.” But with what else does one touch, if not with one’s hands?

“Our hands have touched.” There, the Evangelist calls upon three senses: sight, hearing, and touch, in order to bear witness concerning Jesus Christ—that He is the Son of God who truly became man. We perceived Him; we touched Him and held Him; we saw Him and heard Him. The words “have touched” also allude to what happened with Thomas. But please read the Gospel according to Luke, because the account of Thomas is recorded in the Gospel according to John. Read the Gospel according to Luke and you will see: because their joy kept them from believing, He told them to touch Him.

And because they still could not believe, He said to them, “Give Me something to eat,” to assure them that it was truly He. In this way the Spirit—forgive me—Heaven, concerning the second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Son, made use of three human senses to give them certainty. And concerning the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, He gave them two senses by which to be assured: hearing and sight. They were to see and hear, to hear and see. You see that God did not leave Himself without witness.

As for those who would still say, “We do not believe,” and so forth, in the end we would have to call them people of ill will. What more should God do? Do you know where the phrase “God did not leave Himself without witness” is written? It appears in the Apostle Paul’s address to the Athenians at the Areopagus. God, he told them, did not leave Himself without witness. He gave testimonies. Therefore, if you remain unbelieving, do not claim that you have no testimony; the cause is your own ill will. And here we would say the same: if you remain unbelieving, do not blame God, but blame yourselves, because your disposition is evil.

“It filled the whole house where they were sitting.” The Spirit of God filled the entire house where the disciples were seated. “It became a vessel.” The interpretation is: “The house became a vessel of spiritual water.” Why, then, were the disciples not baptized?

Christ said to Nicodemus, “Unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he is not saved. He is made new through water and the Spirit.” Here He means Baptism: unless you are baptized and receive the Holy Spirit, you are not saved. Yet the disciples were not baptized here. That is, the Twelve were not baptized with water, nor were the others, whose total number was one hundred and twenty—the other one hundred and eight, we might say. None of them was baptized with water. Paul, however, was baptized with water. Do you see an apparent difference here?

But is there really a difference, as you will see in what follows? No, there is not. Let me remind you of what happened in the Acts of the Apostles. The Lord appeared to Ananias in a vision and instructed him: “Go. You will open his eyes, heal him of his blindness, and baptize him.” Nothing more.

“I will do the rest,” says the Lord. And as for all the rest—the Gospel and what would thereafter take place among those preparing to believe, who had to be catechized and baptized—He again says, “I will do the rest.” But Paul was baptized.

They, however, were not baptized at that time. Is there some difference here? No. Then why were they not baptized? Saint Cyril tells us that the house—the upper room where they were—“became a vessel of spiritual water.” It became a vessel. Please pay close attention to this point. It became a vessel of spiritual water: in other words, a baptismal font, but a font of spiritual water. It was spiritual; there was no physical water. The house became like a baptismal font, as though it had been filled with water. But it was filled with the Spirit of God, not with water. The water, he says here, was spiritual. Very well.

He then explains the reason. In the first chapter of Acts, when the Lord told them to remain there in Jerusalem, He said, “You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” John the Baptist said, “I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” He is not speaking about water. On the contrary, John speaks of water in reference to his own baptism, when he baptized people with water. Is there any contradiction? No. What we have here is the following pattern, and I want you to pay close attention to it: then, the Spirit was manifest and the water was spiritual.

For the disciples, the Spirit was manifest and the water was spiritual. Now, for us, the water is manifest and the Spirit is spiritual and unseen. It is the same thing. If you ask me why the Spirit had to be manifest and the water spiritual, while for us it is the reverse, consider this: whether something is perceived spiritually or is visibly manifest makes no difference. Let us say that at this very moment the Spirit of God is here above us. Do you doubt that He is? If He were not, could I be saying these things to you, and could you be hearing them? Yet at certain moments we perceive Him through a visible sign.

Does it matter whether we see Him or do not see Him? What matters is that He is here. That is why I told you that whether something is perceptible to the senses or perceived spiritually is not of great importance. The disciples, however, had to receive confirmation in a perceptible way. As I said earlier, they had to perceive the coming of the Holy Spirit through two senses; they had to experience it with their senses and understand it. Therefore, they had to see Him, while the water became spiritual and unseen. For us, this is no longer necessary, because the confirmation has already been given. Thus, the water is perceptible to the senses, while the Holy Spirit is spiritual and unseen. That is the reason.

The Baptism of the Apostles and our own Baptism are the same. There is no difference at all. To put it more precisely, Peter’s Baptism, which took place at Pentecost, is the same as Paul’s Baptism, which took place three years later with water. It is the very same Baptism, identical in every respect. It does not matter which element is spiritual and unseen and which is visibly manifest. Do you understand, please? Saint Cyril will, of course, tell us much more when he speaks about Holy Baptism in his Mystagogical Catecheses. This is very important. It may also resolve a question some of you have: Why were the Apostles not baptized with water? The reason is what I have just explained to you.

“There appeared to them divided tongues as of fire, and one rested upon each of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.” This passage is from the second chapter of the book of Acts. Saint Cyril now explains it. You understand that I am interpreting as I go. “They partook of fire”; they became partakers of fire, “not a consuming fire, but a saving fire, which destroys the thorns of sins and makes the soul radiant.” It was a fire that did not burn them, but was a saving fire. We know that fire consumes and burns.

Fire is certainly not ordinarily a means of salvation; it is destructive. But here we have a saving fire. It destroys only the thorns of sins and makes the soul radiant. Before I continue, allow me to say something prompted by this passage from the book of Acts. I also mentioned it in our previous catechesis, the sixteenth. I will not develop it at length here, but will say only a few words. Why did the Holy Spirit appear in this way? “There appeared to them divided tongues as of fire.” Fiery tongues appeared before the eyes of the disciples.

They rested upon the head of each one. The text says it beautifully: “And one rested upon each of them.” Notice: upon each one—upon every single person, over his head. The Holy Spirit appeared as one fire, and this fire, in the form of “divided tongues,” was distributed and separated into individual flames. A tongue is simply the shape fire takes as it rises upward. We use the same expression for an ordinary fire. Do we not speak of “the tongues of flame”? We say, “Be careful of the tongues of flame in the fireplace; make sure there is no object nearby.” The flames truly resemble tongues.

So now the fire is distributed in the form of a tongue above the head of each person. What was this division, this distribution? The Holy Spirit Himself was not divided. What were divided and distributed were the divine uncreated energies, the graces and spiritual gifts—not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is indivisible. God gives Himself to all without being divided, but His divine uncreated energies were distributed in a perceptible form. Each person could see over another’s head what had been given to him. Why were the divine uncreated energies distributed? As I told you last year, in the catechesis in which I again spoke about the Spirit of God...

Here we have...

...the foundations of our salvation. One is Christological, and the other is Pneumatological. The Christological foundation is that the Church is one body—one body. Indeed, even by nature we human beings are one body. Do we not all share the same essence and have the same kinds of cells? But above all, we are one body because we have been baptized and share one Baptism, one faith, and the one Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. We all receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Therefore, since we abide in the Body and Blood of Christ, we are one body. Because we are all within the Body and Blood of Christ, we are all one body.

Just as God is one essence, so the faithful are one body. God is one essence, and the faithful are one body. Thus, through the Church’s Christological foundation, we have unity: one body. In the Holy Trinity, as we know, there is one essence, but three Persons. The Persons are distinctly revealed. How, then, were the persons of the faithful to be distinctly revealed? For they were all born, if I may use a certain word—a word that is inappropriate and unfortunate in this context, and is generally used to demean people—

I want to use that word because it is so expressive: a mass, a mass. You know, people in politics and elsewhere say, “The people are a mass.” This has been said; it is well known. A mass. But a mass is impersonal; it has no personhood. In the Church, we do not have a mass; we have a body and persons, unity and persons. And how are these persons brought to their full stature? Through the Church’s other foundation, the pneumatological foundation—the foundation in the Holy Spirit. This is why the Holy Spirit came separately upon each person: to reveal and bring forth the personhood of each one. This is exceedingly important.

Since, of course, our time has passed, rather than going further, let us remain with what I have told you and use the rest of our time on this point. Pay attention, and understand this: only within the Church is the human being truly recognized as a person. Indeed, in these so-called modern social systems, the person is essentially lost, because, as you know, the person is sacrificed for the sake of the mass. It would be profoundly degrading to embrace social systems that demean the human person—systems in which the human person can be lost and even sacrificed for the good of the mass.

But within Christianity, the person is brought to his full stature. Tell me, who else has ever spoken of such an exaltation of the person? The Holy Spirit Himself descended in His fullness, not merely to bestow spiritual gifts. Allow me to say—may I be forgiven for putting it this way—that the Holy Spirit did not descend simply to bestow spiritual gifts. Let me say that this is secondary. The Spirit of God descended to bring persons to their full stature. This is the great thing. A believer may say, “I have no spiritual gifts. But I am a person. Before God, I stand as a person. The Spirit of God brings forth my personhood. I am a person. My personhood has not been flattened or erased.”

I am a person. Is that of little importance? All these things, my beloved, reveal to us the great worth of the human being. God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Το γεγονός της Πεντηκοστής, και λέγει αυτό το πάρα πολύ ωραίο και χαρακτηριστικό: «Μεγάλη αξία, ενταύθα, εν τη πόλει ταύτη, Ιερουσαλήμ». Δηλαδή, όταν έγινε η Πεντηκοστή, έγινε, λέει, εδώ, εις την πόλη αυτή, εν τη πόλει ταύτη, εις αυτήν την πόλη, την Ιερουσαλήμ. Αυτό έχει πάρα πολύ αξία και σημασία, διότι τονίζεται ότι εκείνο που συνέβη, το γεγονός, και η πίστη μας επί γεγονότων είναι κάτι που θα το λέγω πάντοτε, μην το ξεχνάτε, είναι εκείνο που ακριβώς κάνει τον Χριστιανισμό να μην έχει καμία σχέση με όλες τις άλλες θρησκείες, διότι όλες οι άλλες θρησκείες εκφράζουν —τι εκφράζουν, λέει;— την ανθρωπίνη φύση, την ανθρωπίνη τάση να συναντήσει τον Θεό. Δηλαδή, είναι θρησκείες κατ’ επίνοιαν. Μέσα μας είναι φυτεμένο να αναζητούμε τον Θεό. Αυτό ο Θεός μάς το έκανε. Επειδή όμως δεν τον βρίσκουμε, επινοούμε τρόπους να νομίζουμε ότι βρήκαμε τον Θεό. Και απόδειξις: όταν κάνουμε αυτήν την ίδια την κτίση, την κάνουμε Θεό και τη θεοποιούμε και την προσκυνούμε και τη λατρεύουμε. Δεν είναι αυτό ολοφάνερο;

θεωρεί ένα προνόμιο, είναι κάτι πάρα πέρα από ένα προνόμιο. Έχει τη μεγάλη αξία να μιλάει για πράγματα που ήσαν γεγονότα. Γι’ αυτό λέει εδώ: «Εις αυτήν την πόλη μου, εις αυτήν την Ιερουσαλήμ έγινε η Πεντηκοστή». Και λέγει τώρα ένα δίκαιο καύχημα. Όπως και εμείς οι Έλληνες θα λέγαμε ότι εδώ χτίσαμε τον Παρθενώνα, εδώ έγινε εκείνο, εδώ γεννήθηκε η φιλοσοφία. Προνόμιο ενός λαού, και κάθε λαός μπορεί να έχει τα προνόμιά του, για τα οποία μπορεί να καυχάται, μόνο όχι κατά στείρον τρόπον, αλλά κατά δυναμικόν τρόπον. Εάν καυχάσαι ότι είχες φιλοσόφους προγόνους, εσύ γιατί είσαι ο νέος λαός;

Τα λοιπά. Ώστε τότε θα λέγαμε ότι είναι κάτι θεόπνευστον και αλάνθαστον, θεόπνευστον και αλάνθαστον. Να πού είναι φρουρός το Πνεύμα το Άγιον. Δεν ξέρω αν μπόρεσα να σας δώσω να καταλάβετε πώς, λέει, το Πνεύμα το Άγιον φρουρεί την Εκκλησία, δηλαδή την αλήθεια της Εκκλησίας. Μεγάλο πράγμα αυτό. Ακόμη, είναι αγιοποιός της Εκκλησίας το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, μεταβάλλει τους πιστούς σε Αγίους. Μπορούμε να μιλάμε για πνευματική ζωή χωρίς το Πνεύμα το Άγιο; Είναι κατανοητόν πράγμα; Μπορείτε να μιλάτε για γλυκό χωρίς ζάχαρη; Μπορείτε να μιλάτε για παγωτό χωρίς να είναι παγωμένο πράγμα;

Μία από τις πρώτες πόλεις που άρχισαν να κάνουν τη δουλειά τους, μετά από την Αθήνα και τη Θεσσαλονίκη, ήταν η Λάρισσα. Δυστυχώς. Και υπάρχουν και πλανούν και λέγουν ότι η Πεντηκοστή είναι σε μία διαρκή εξέλιξη, ώστε, λέγει, εμείς σήμερα κατανοούμε καλύτερα τα πράγματα της Καινής Διαθήκης από ό,τι οι Απόστολοι στην εποχή τους. Και μόνο να το σκεφτεί κανείς αυτό είναι γελοίο. Και μόνο ότι, δηλαδή, εμείς καταλαβαίνουμε πιο καλά από τον Απόστολο Πέτρον και τον Απόστολο Παύλον. Αλλά πώς καταλαβαίνουμε; Δυνάμει τίνος; Για προσέξτε σε αυτό το σημείο: δυνάμει των γραπτών των, διότι τα γραπτά τους έχουμε, τα Ευαγγέλια, τις Επιστολές, και με βάση αυτά κατανοούμε. Τώρα τι θα πιστεύαμε;

«Και οφθαλμοί ίδωσι τας πυρίνας γλώσσας και ώτα επακούσωσι του ήχου». Τόση χάρις κατήρχετο! Θα μπορούσε να περάσει απαρατήρητη αυτή η χάρις που κατήρχετο; Βεβαίως όχι! Για να μην περάσει λοιπόν απαρατήρητη αυτή η χάρις, δηλαδή η κάθοδος του Αγίου Πνεύματος, γι' αυτό ακριβώς το λόγο εδώ προαναγγέλλει σαν μια σάλπιγγα, επουράνιος βέβαια, που ηχεί για να ειδοποιήσει την κατερχομένη χάρη, το Πνεύμα του Θεού που έρχεται να δώσει τη χάρη. Και τι ήταν;

«Εωράκαμεν». Μάλιστα το διπλώνει, το κάνει δυο φορές, το λέει παρακάτω. Πρώτα λέει «εωράκαμεν» και μετά λέει «εωράκαμεν τοις οφθαλμοίς ημών». Είπε και το «εθεασάμεθα». Θεάομαι, θεώμαι, είναι ρήμα που δείχνει ότι παρατηρώ κάτι μετά προσοχής. Γιατί βάζει αυτόν τον πλεονασμό, «είδαμε με τα μάτια μας»; Το λέμε και εμείς στην καθημερινή μας γλώσσα, όταν θέλουμε να δώσουμε μια μαρτυρία και λέμε «το είδα με τα μάτια μου». Δηλαδή με τι άλλο θα το έβλεπες παρά με τα μάτια σου; Γιατί είναι πλεονασμός το «με τα μάτια σου»; Για να δώσεις την μαρτυρία μιας βεβαιώσεως. «Και αι χείρες ημών εψηλάφησαν». Μα πώς ψηλαφά κανείς, με τι άλλο παρά με τα χέρια του;

«Επλήρωσεν όλον τον οίκον, ου ήσαν καθήμενοι». Και επλήρωσε, εγέμισε το Πνεύμα του Θεού όλον τον οίκον, όλο το σπίτι που εκεί εκάθηντο οι μαθητές. «Δοχείον γέγονε». Ερμηνεία: «Δοχείον γέγονε του νοητού ύδατος ο οίκος». Γιατί δεν βαπτίστηκαν οι μαθητές;

Ο Χριστός είπε εις τον Νικόδημον: «Εάν κανείς δεν γεννηθεί εξ ύδατος και Πνεύματος, δεν σώζεται. Γίνεται καινούριος εν ύδατι και Πνεύματι». Και εννοεί εδώ το βάπτισμα, ότι αν δεν βαπτιστείς και δεν δεχτείς το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, δεν σώζεσαι. Εδώ οι μαθητές δεν βαπτίστηκαν. Δηλαδή οι δώδεκα δεν βαπτίστηκαν με νερό, ούτε οι άλλοι που το σύνολό τους ήταν 120, θα λέγαμε οι άλλοι 108. Δεν εβαπτίστηκε κανείς με νερό. Ο Παύλος εβαπτίστηκε με νερό. Βλέπετε μια διαφοροποίηση εδώ;
