Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets Christ’s post-Resurrection breathing upon the Apostles as a real gift of the Holy Spirit joined to the authority to forgive sins. The Holy Spirit both gives life and dwells within humanity, and the resurrected spiritual body will be sustained eternally by the Spirit rather than remain subject to biological death. The Apostles’ limited understanding of Christ restricted their capacity to receive divine grace, while greater knowledge through the Spirit enlarged their receptivity to still more grace.

In Saint Cyril’s book of Catechetical Lectures, in the seventeenth Catechetical Lecture. Those of you who have the book, turn to page 221. We are at paragraph iota-beta, that is, twelve—the twelfth paragraph. “He granted the Apostles communion in this Holy Spirit; for it is written: ‘And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any...”’” Hold it there!
He says that the Lord Jesus granted the Apostles communion in the Holy Spirit, for it is written in the Gospel according to John: “And when He had said this,” after His Resurrection, “He breathed on them”—He breathed from His mouth—and told them to receive the Holy Spirit. The sins of those whom they forgive will remain forgiven, while the sins of those whom they do not forgive will remain unforgiven. Since his subject is the Holy Spirit, Saint Cyril comments on the words, “And when He had said this, He breathed on them,” and, “When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’”
Drawing on the New Testament, he offers a very beautiful comment. He says: “This is the second breathing, because the first was darkened through voluntary sins, so that what was written might be fulfilled: ‘He ascended, breathing into your face and delivering you from tribulation.’ And from where did He ascend? From Hades. For this is how the Gospel related it: that it was after the Resurrection that He breathed on them.” This breathing upon the disciples was the second. The first breathing had been darkened—that is, blackened and corrupted—
by our voluntary sins, so that the prophecy, the written word, might be fulfilled and brought to pass. This passage is found in the Prophet Nahum, chapter two, verse two: He ascended, breathing into your face, and delivered you from tribulation. Saint Cyril now asks: What does “He ascended” mean? From where did He ascend? From Hades, he answers. For this is how the Gospel related it to us: Christ breathed upon His disciples, upon human beings, after His Resurrection. So, my beloved, let us reflect on this, because it is
very beautiful. Before I continue, however, let me clarify one small point. It is not a theological matter, but a question of the written text and the manuscript tradition. I mention it because Saint Cyril says here, “For this is how the Gospel related it to us.” In the preceding paragraph, which we discussed last time, he says: “The Spirit of Truth will relate to you the whole truth.” The Holy Spirit will relate the whole truth to you. But if you turn to Holy Scripture, to the Gospel according to John where this is written, it does not say, “will relate.” It says, “He will guide you into all truth”—with “all” coming before “truth.” It is true, of course, that the Fathers often quote passages from Holy Scripture from memory. From memory. But at other times, they are not quoting from memory. Take note that scholars who study the text of Holy Scripture also examine every New Testament or Old Testament passage quoted in the Fathers.
They compare these passages from the Fathers, and in this way we ultimately gain access to many different readings and manuscripts through the Fathers—not only through the surviving copies of Holy Scripture. From these comparisons, scholars draw many conclusions. In other words, we come closer to the original text. In this particular case, I had a question—though not a very difficult one, because others have worked extensively on this point. So I consulted what is called the critical edition of the New Testament and found that one manuscript does contain the phrase, “He will relate to you the whole truth.” I mention this so that you will not think either that I quoted it incorrectly, since an interpretation arises from that wording, or that Saint Cyril had it wrong. Quite simply, when Saint Cyril said this, he was relying on a particular text, on a particular manuscript, as we have been discussing today.
It is not an error, nor is it wrong in meaning. I say this simply so that you may understand something about these matters. Now, then, let us come to the points I said we should examine. It is well known that after His Resurrection, when our Lord appeared to His disciples, the first thing He did was to give them peace: “Peace be with you.” He also told them to receive the Holy Spirit, breathing upon them with His mouth. The Lord said, “Peace be with you,” because the disciples were troubled. It was perfectly natural that, after the Crucifixion and death of the Lord, seeing Him standing before them would shake them deeply. Just imagine such a thing. That is why they were troubled, and He said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Be at peace. Be still; do not be afraid or troubled. Immediately afterward, He breathed upon them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Clearly, by this act the Lord intended to give the Holy Spirit to His disciples. But if He gave them the Holy Spirit then, what need was there for Pentecost? And conversely, if Pentecost was still to come, why give them the Holy Spirit now? What was the reason? Saint Cyril will tell us immediately below. So I will not explain it now; we shall see it in a moment.
What I want to emphasize is that when He said this, He truly gave them the Holy Spirit. This did not contradict Pentecost. It was simply the same event manifested at two moments in time. I have explained this pattern to you before: it is one and the same event at two different moments. Why there are two moments depends, as Saint Cyril tells us, on the disposition of human beings. God is thereby compelled to manifest a single event at two or more moments in time, even though the event itself is one and indivisible. We shall see this a little further on. For now, what I want us to examine in the passage I read is the need for the second breathing. What was the first breathing, and what is the second? And how does the prophecy of Nahum relate to this? When God made the human person, Scripture says that He breathed into him the breath of life. It even tells us where He breathed: into his nostrils. The nostrils, of course, receive the breath of God and make it their own breath. We might therefore call this a symbolic act,
but God did not merely give ordinary breath, nor is this breathing the familiar act of respiration. Those things are secondary. When we say that a person is alive, we mean that he breathes. But breathing is secondary. I cannot live without breathing, yet first I live, and then I breathe. Thus, when God breathes into the human person’s nostrils, He means to show that He gave him the spirit of life. How are we to understand “the spirit of life” here? First of all, as what we call life itself—the phenomenon of life.
For we must not forget that He also gave this spirit of life
to the animals. Saint Gregory Palamas explains this beautifully in his sixtieth homily, which concerns Theophany—Homily Sixty. He asks there: Why do the angels not possess the spirit of life? Saint Gregory Palamas says that God made three categories of beings: angels, human beings, and animals. He gave the animals the breath of life, though Scripture does not say that they became “a living soul.” When God creates the animals and the plants,
He did not give them a nous, the spiritual intellect, together with life. When He made the angels, He gave them a nous, but not the breath of life, because they had no body. When He made the human person, He gave him both a nous and the breath of life, so that his body might be given life. In this respect, the human person is richer than both the animals and the angels. Astonishing! Saint Gregory Palamas says this in order to show that the Holy Trinity placed... Ah, forgive me: God gave the human person a nous and speech.
And speech—that is, articulate speech. Here the word logos does not mean reason, because he is already speaking about the nous. It means articulate speech. He then says that the Holy Trinity placed Its seal upon the human person. We say that the human person is the image of God. We speak of freedom, reason, sovereignty, and creativity, and we say that all these are elements of being made in the likeness of God. Yet there are two further ways in which the image of God is revealed to us, making this subject immeasurably rich. One of these, beyond what I have already mentioned, is that the human person is...
the image of Jesus Christ, who is the image of the invisible God. Why is he the image of Jesus Christ? The Fathers do not say merely that he is the image of God the Word; they say that he is the image of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul says this as well. Why am I the image of Jesus Christ? Because the Word assumed human nature. Therefore, the human person was to be made according to this plan, this prototype: according to what the Son of God would become—or rather, according to what He did become. Historically, Adam came first, but his archetype is God the Word who would become man. Adam was made according to Him. Therefore, the image of God
in the human person is none other than the image of Christ. This means that the image of God also extends to the body—a point that even some theologians cannot understand or do not know; forgive me for saying so. Many theologians say, “It certainly cannot apply to the body.”
Yet, my beloved, if you open a book of dogmatic theology, you may well find it saying, “It certainly cannot apply to the body.” And nevertheless, the human person is the image of God even with respect to the body—yes, even the body—because he is the image of Jesus Christ, that is, of the Word who would become man. But you will see this expressed even more beautifully in what Saint Gregory Palamas now says.
This is the other teaching: the human person is the image of God because he images the Triune God. In what way? Listen. God gave him a nous, speech, and a spirit of life within his body. The nous is an image of the Father. Articulate speech is an image of God the Word. And the spirit that gives life to his body—his living body, that is, the life within it, what we call the living cell—is an image of the Holy Spirit. It is astonishing, if you ask me. To me, it is astonishing.
I do not know what moves you deeply. My beloved, do not be deeply moved merely by receiving a few useful words about maintaining good relations with your mother-in-law and father-in-law, or with your husband or wife. Those things are good, but it is the fundamental and essential truths that ought truly to move us. I am an image of the Triune God: the nous corresponds to the Father, speech to the Son, and the life in my body to the Holy Spirit. This is what Saint Gregory Palamas says; I am adding nothing of my own. Now pay close attention: when the Holy Spirit came, He placed His own seal upon us. For the Father willed to give us being, to create us.
The Son fashioned us. When Scripture says, “God formed man, taking dust from the earth,” the act of forming suggests hands. Yet the invisible God has no hands; this language reveals His particular care. But it also shows us something else: we are the direct creation of God the Word. Did you hear that? Tell me, then: where is there room here for the theory of evolution?
Are we descended from apes, then, and all the other fairy tales, nonsense, and empty chatter? Tell me, where does that fit? Nowhere at all. We are a direct creation of God. They tell us that when we say such things, we human beings are arrogant and want to make ourselves seem important, when in fact we are nothing more than created beings. Thank you very much.
Created by evolution, that is—as though we descended from an ape, from a single-celled organism, from dead matter through spontaneous generation, and so on and so forth. This is not a matter of arrogance, but the revelation of our noble origin. That is all. Indeed, God Himself asks us to recognize this.
A question was raised tonight, which I will address next time: What does “I said, you are gods” mean? Yes, of course, in this passage the Old Testament calls the judges “gods.” But when Christ quoted this passage in reply to those who challenged Him for calling Himself the Son of God, showing that this was not blasphemy,
does Scripture not say that God declared,
“You are gods, yet you die like ordinary men; like men you die”? “I called you gods.” Here the passage has a deeper, mystical meaning, and Jesus Christ reveals that mystical meaning in the answer He gave to the Jews who asked Him, “Why do You call Yourself the Son of God?” Do you see, then? Here we see that the human being truly is a little god. God Himself reveals this to him, and it is not human arrogance to say that we are what we are. If only we understood what we truly are! That understanding would shake us to the core, correct us, and lead us back to the Holy Trinity, instead of to all the other things we talk about.
People pretend that this is pride, while we supposedly become humble by claiming that we are descended from apes and by repeating other such nonsense. Now, in his very constitution, the human being bears the marks of all three Persons of the Holy Trinity. This is the first aspect: the Spirit of God came to give life to the human body. But there is also a second aspect. The Spirit of God comes to dwell within the human being. God, of course, is one, because He is one essence. Yet when, in a certain sense, the ministries of the Persons of the Holy Trinity are apportioned—
if I may put it in such human terms, and may God forgive me—the ministries of the Persons of the Holy Trinity are apportioned, so to speak. It is not literally so—again, may God forgive the expression—but this is how the Fathers formulate it: the Father wills, the Son creates, and the Holy Spirit sustains. The Apostle Paul, for example, says to the Corinthians, “Do you not know that your bodies”—notice, your bodies; he does not say your souls—“your bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, who dwells within you?” He does not say a temple of the Son, or of the incarnate Son.
Christ says, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” And does Christ not say that, if someone keeps His commandments, “We will come”? Who are the “We”? Who will come? The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. “And We will make Our dwelling with him.” The whole Holy Trinity dwells within the human being. But Holy Scripture gives particular emphasis to each Person as it sees fit. At one time it refers to the Father, at another to the Son, and at another to the Holy Spirit. Here, then, we see that the Holy Spirit dwelt in our first-created ancestors. He remained with them, because human beings had been created and needed life and sustaining power.
The Holy Spirit was the One who would sustain human beings. And this, if you will, is why they would not have died. Do you know why the human being is called spiritual? Not because this refers to his own spirit, but because it refers to the Holy Spirit. At present he is biological, and so he dies. But when he becomes a spiritual human being—that is, when he is directed, governed,
and sustained by the Holy Spirit—then he will not die. This is precisely why our body after the Resurrection is called a spiritual body. The Apostle Paul speaks of a spiritual body. He does not mean an immaterial body, but a body sustained by the Holy Spirit. These are distinct stages. The first is what we call life in the ordinary sense; the other is the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit departs, biological life remains. But life without the Holy Spirit ends in death—what we call biological death. Then, after the Resurrection, we will receive the Holy Spirit in such a way that He will sustain us unto the ages of ages. We will no longer depend on the biological processes we have in this world, such as eating in order to live.
Here he now says something very beautiful. Adam sinned and thereby darkened the first breath of God.
To darken means to stain or smudge. As the Fathers say, we are an image that has been darkened—let me put it in simpler Greek: tarnished; or more simply still, blackened. Yet no matter what a human being does, he cannot change the features that make him the image of God. He cannot do so; even if he wished to, he could not, because this belongs to his very constitution. But now that the image had been darkened, the breath had to be renewed.
This is what Saint Cyril means when he says, “This is the second breathing,” because Christ now gives the breath—that is, the Holy Spirit—to the disciples. And here something else astonishing is revealed: the identity of the One who gave us that first breath when He created us in Paradise—or rather, not in Paradise, because the human being was placed in Paradise afterward. Who is He? He is the One whom we later came to call Jesus Christ. Can you imagine it? Jesus Christ is the Word who made us, because it is He who breathed upon us and gives the Holy Spirit. By this act, then, He simultaneously—
not only gives back to us what we had, in a manner of speaking, darkened, but at the same time reveals His own identity as God the Word, now united also with His human nature. Saint Cyril uses a prophecy of Nahum. I will read it to you again: “He ascended, breathing upon your face, delivering you from tribulation.” He ascended, breathing upon your face, and delivered you—rescued you—from tribulation. Saint Cyril asks: When did He ascend? From Hades. For when did Christ give the Holy Spirit to the disciples? After His Resurrection. It is astonishing!
This prophecy is astonishing—truly astonishing! After His Resurrection, then, when He ascended from Hades, He gave the Holy Spirit. He would give Him in fullness. Indeed, Saint Cyril will use the word “fully and completely.” He uses it twice a little later to indicate this fullness. Thus, when Christ ascends to the Father, the Holy Spirit will descend upon the disciples in fullness. Do not tell me that when Christ breathed upon them, He gave the Holy Spirit only potentially, reserving the actual gift for Pentecost. Do not say that.
Saint Cyril states clearly in his interpretation that Christ gave the Holy Spirit as an actual gift both when He breathed upon the disciples and at Pentecost. And what does the prophecy mean when it says, “delivering you from tribulation”? It means that He will remove you from tribulation—rescue you and bring you out of it. What is this tribulation? It is the supreme and ultimate tribulation called death, for every other tribulation is less than death. Death is the tribulation above all others. Does this not recall what I told you earlier: that the human being will receive the Holy Spirit anew when the Resurrection of the dead takes place?
He will then have a spiritual body—that is, a body governed by the Holy Spirit—and he will no longer die. Thus He will deliver you from tribulation, meaning from death. But let us continue: “Now He gives grace, but afterward He bestows it still more abundantly, and He says to them: ‘I am ready to give even now, but the vessel cannot contain it. For the present, therefore, receive as much grace as you can contain, but expect still more.’” Now, he says, Christ gives grace, but afterward He bestows it even more abundantly.
More abundantly. When? At Pentecost. And He tells them, “I am ready to give to you even now, but your vessel cannot contain it.” We will comment on this. The Holy Spirit comes to the disciples in the form of breath, of breathing. There at Pentecost, however, He comes in the form of—
breath as well, indeed a mighty rushing breath, but also in the form of fire: tongues of fire. It is therefore the same event. And now He says, “If you are ready, I will give you the Holy Spirit”—that is, in fullness—“but your vessels cannot contain Him.” What, then, are each person’s vessels? What is each person’s vessel? Elsewhere, Saint Cyril says that the Holy Spirit is like an ocean. Whatever vessel you have, that is how much water you will receive. If all you have is the hollow of one hand, you will receive only as much as that one hand can hold. If you cup both hands together,
you double—or rather, quadruple—the capacity. If you take a bucket, you receive more. If you bring a tank with you, you can hold even more. The issue is not the ocean, but your own capacity. The issue is not the Holy Spirit, but your own receptivity. Here, however, Saint Cyril presents the Lord as saying, “Even now I give Him to you. You have containers; you have vessels.” What exactly is this container, my beloved, this vessel? What was added to the disciples between the day of Christ’s first appearance after the Resurrection—Pascha—and Pentecost? Fifty days passed. What was added?
He speaks of a vessel, and at this point the vessel is not large. There is a vessel, but its capacity is small. What do you think it is? Do you know? Imagine that the disciples still had not grasped who the Lord was. They could not grasp that He was the Lord of the glory of Israel who had become incarnate. They had not yet understood this. If they had, they would have behaved very differently. First of all, shortly before the Cross, at the Mystical Supper—just shortly before, as we were saying a few hours ago—the disciples began to be troubled. When the Lord saw them troubled, He said to them, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid,” and He told them, “My Father is greater than I.” If you regard Me merely as a teacher, as only a man, a mere man—“mere” in the sense of nothing but a man—then I tell you: “My Father is greater than I,” in relation to how you regard Me. If you see Me only as a man, that is the meaning of the passage, “My Father is greater than I.” That is the correct interpretation. Pay attention, because there are very many interpretations. So what are you afraid of? Does this not reveal that the disciples did not know Jesus Christ? It is perfectly clear. And then...
The Lord told them that they would stumble because of Him. He said, “Tonight you will all stumble because of Me.” Do you know what this stumbling was? It was according to the words, “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.” Who is the shepherd? Christ. Who are the sheep? The disciples. “I will strike the shepherd”—that is, Christ would be arrested, tried, and crucified—and the sheep would be scattered. The disciples went away and hid. The Lord told them not to stumble. “Watch and pray,” He said to them. In other words, stay awake. When He left them to go a little farther and pray, He told them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” What temptation? The temptation concerning who I am: “Our teacher has been arrested; then whom have we been following for three years?”
Then they entered into the great temptation, the great stumbling: Who is your teacher? And furthermore, if they had known that He was the Lord of Glory, who had lowered His glory, concealed it, and kept it hidden so that His identity would not be revealed—if they had known, would they have abandoned Him? Would they have gone into hiding? Would they have locked the upper room for fear of the Jews? Certainly not. Therefore, they did not know who Jesus was. At the Cross their stumbling reached its height: their teacher was crucified. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus said, “But we had hoped that He was the Messiah.”
And with all this, they said, “Today is the third day since these things happened, since our rulers crucified Him. Some women from our company told us that He had risen”—as though they were saying, “Who can believe them?”—“and that they had seen angels, who told them that He had risen”—again, as though they were saying, “Who can believe them?” For if the two disciples on the road to Emmaus had believed, they would not have left Jerusalem. But they returned when Christ revealed Himself as risen. They had seen Him, because He had been walking with them. They were saying all these things to Christ Himself. How beautiful that is! How beautiful! And they immediately returned, that very hour, to tell the disciples. There the risen Lord appeared. Yet even after the Resurrection they still did not know who He was. What an astonishing thing!
The teacher. But who is the teacher?
Because they still did not possess full knowledge, they could not receive the Holy Spirit in great measure. They would receive the Holy Spirit as they came to understand who Jesus Christ was. And here, my dear friends, there is an interplay between two things. Knowledge is granted by the Holy Spirit, enabling a person to receive greater knowledge and then more of the Holy Spirit, then still greater knowledge and still more of the Holy Spirit.
It is a kind of feedback, a continual giving and receiving. They needed the Holy Spirit. The Lord gave Him to them in measure. He breathed upon them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Through this they could know the Lord more fully. But when would they receive the fullness? At Pentecost. They were not yet ready to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Was anything else needed? They still had to receive further teaching. And what was that further teaching? It was what the Lord taught them during the forty days after the Resurrection, as the first chapter of Acts tells us. He spoke to them about the Mysteries of the Kingdom of God. Therefore, the disciples were not yet ready. That is why afterward came
Pentecost, to bring the matter to completion. And if you ask, “Why did this happen ten days after the Ascension of Christ?” the Lord told them, “Do not leave; remain here in Jerusalem, for not many days from now.” In other words, it would be soon, before long. He did not tell them exactly when. You know, in Holy Scripture, words such as “days,” or phrases such as “many days” and “a few days,” do not always mean what we would mean today by a few days—two, three, four, or five days. In Scripture they often denote periods of time; indeed, “in those days” can refer to years. Listen: it can mean years, and it is used this way in the Old Testament. So how many days? “Not many days...”
“...from now.” Yes, very good. But how many? He left them waiting and taught them how to wait. This means that, in order to receive the Spirit of God, you must wait. You must wait, be formed and prepared, and continue waiting, receiving Him little by little. Did you hear that? Little by little. According to your knowledge, your faith, and your works, you will receive the Holy Spirit. Through Him you will advance toward greater knowledge, greater faith, and greater virtue, so that you may receive still more of the Holy Spirit, who may be withdrawn or added, taken away or given.
“And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.” Do not take Him away; do not remove Him from me. Do you see? He is given, taken back, added, and withdrawn. This, then, is why He told them: “For now, receive as much grace as you have room for; but expect still more.” After the Resurrection He also said to them, “Remain in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.” Until, He says, you are clothed with power from on high. You remember this, in
the first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. Does that word “clothed” strike you? He does not say, “You will receive”; He says, “You will be clothed.” Saint Cyril explains it to us: “Now receive partially.” When? Now. When is this “now”? At this moment, as I breathe upon you. So, receive partially now; at Pentecost, receive fully and completely. In two places he makes this perfectly clear. Then you will be clothed completely; then you will put on the Holy Spirit in His fullness. “Completely,” as I told you before, means fully. For this is an image: “The one who puts on a garment is enclosed by it on every side.”
When we put on our garment, he says, it covers our whole body, on every side, from every direction. We are completely covered by the garment. This means that you will receive the Holy Spirit in fullness, and He will fill you completely. You will no longer be lacking in anything with regard to the Holy Spirit. That is what it means to be “clothed.” “Do not fear,” he says, “the weapons and arrows of the devil.” Do not fear the devil’s weapons and arrows any longer, “for you will put on the power of the Holy Spirit.” You will be clothed with the power of the Holy Spirit. “Remember what was said just now...”
“The Spirit is not divided, but the grace that comes through Him is apportioned.” Remember what I told you a little earlier: the Spirit is not divided, but grace is apportioned. Therefore, they received the Holy Spirit when Christ breathed upon them, but they received grace partially; at Pentecost they received it fully. What, then, was divided? Not the Holy Spirit. Did they receive one little piece of the Holy Spirit then and the rest afterward? No. The Holy Spirit is not divided. Rather, they received grace partially then and fully afterward. And now I come to paragraph thirteen.
“Jesus, therefore, ascended into Heaven and fulfilled the promise. For He said to them, ‘I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter.’”
Jesus ascended into Heaven and fulfilled the promise, for He had told them, “I will ask the Father, and He will send you another Comforter.” A small observation: those of you who have the book will see that it says, “Jesus, therefore, ascended into Heaven and fulfilled the promise.” There is a typographical error in the Greek text: the word is “promise,” not “recitation.” Indeed, a little farther on—perhaps we will reach it today—Saint Cyril refers again to this promise. The other word, “recitation,” means something entirely different.
Jesus, therefore, ascended into Heaven. You know, many things had to take place. This is why the matters of faith contain—what can I say?—bottomless, inexhaustible Mysteries. We will never reach the depths of their meaning. Never. And yet we read Holy Scripture, where all these things are written with astonishing restraint and simplicity, so much so that we say, “Can such simplicity conceal Mysteries of such depth, such power, and such hidden realities?” This too is something deeply divine: something is offered with the greatest simplicity, yet contains overwhelming majesty. Pay attention.
For them to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit, there was another reason besides the fact that their vessels were shallow and small. The Son had to ascend into Heaven so that the other Comforter might descend. When He says “another Comforter,” it is self-evident that Jesus Himself is also called a Comforter. Thus, both are Comforters. They are called Comforters because they came into the world to console, strengthen, help, and illuminate humanity. That is why they are called Comforters. The Father is not called the Comforter.
The Son and the Holy Spirit are the two Comforters. I will remind you of Abraham’s hospitality to the three angels, as a type of the Holy Trinity. I say that I will remind you because I spoke to you about it this year, not last year. Last year I told you that the two persons who went down to Sodom were types of the Son and the Holy Spirit. These two who descended—the Son and the Holy Spirit—were Comforters to Lot, but punishers to Sodom, for Scripture says, “The Lord rained down from the Lord.”
The phrase is, “The Lord rained fire and brimstone from the Lord,” just as in the words of the one hundred and ninth Psalm, “The Lord said to my Lord.” David says, “The Lord said to my Lord.” Here, the Lord rained down from the Lord—the Lord from the Lord. Therefore, the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord. Yet there is one Lord, one Lordship. And here I repeat that these two persons came as punishers of the world and as Comforters of Lot. They are, then, Comforters. In their fullness these are the two persons; there, in the account of Sodom, it was shown in miniature.
When the Son came into the world, the Holy Spirit came as well. But the Son still had to ascend. Why? Because human nature had to ascend. I was telling you this somewhere recently, if I remember correctly. Human nature had to ascend so that the Father, seeing the Son, might justify humanity, because the Son wears human nature. In this way, humanity is justified in the person of the beloved Son, who possesses human nature. Therefore, He had to ascend there.
There, man—that is, human nature—is present, and in this way mankind is justified. And there is something else as well. The Son had to ascend there in order to open the way, as “the firstborn among many brethren,” so that we too might ascend there, into the bosom of the Father—that is, into the Kingdom of God. How many things, how many things, how many things can one understand within these simple lines!
You noticed the word “ask.” He says, “I will ask the Father.” As you know, in ancient Greek “I ask” means “I beseech.” “I ask you, have me excused,” as it says in the parable of those invited to the supper. In other words, “I beseech you, excuse me.” So in the ancient language, “I ask” is to be understood as “I beseech.” And here the Son says that He will beseech the Father. Why? Why does He beseech the Father? Because He is our representative in Heaven, acting on behalf of us who are so terribly at fault—guilty and under judgment. He beseeches the Father, which means that He is our Mediator. This is what “He beseeches” means: He is the Mediator; He intercedes. And He intercedes not merely with words. His intercession is the very human nature of which I spoke to you earlier. The Father beholds it and forgives mankind. Therefore, human nature itself is the intercession; human nature itself is the plea addressed to the Father. And this human nature had to reach Heaven. “They sat waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit; and when the day of Pentecost had fully come, here, in this Jerusalem filled with so many tombs...” Our own...
“For this distinction is yours as well, and we speak not of blessings that took place among others,” and so forth, “but of those that took place among us and were bestowed upon us.” Notice something here: “They sat waiting.” “They sat” means precisely that: they were seated. But, my dear friends, they were “waiting.” To wait means to expect. I told you earlier why He left them to wait. My dear friends, pay attention. I very much want you to notice one point. Christ told us twice to wait. Twice. The first was when He spoke to us about the Comforter.
The other concerned His own person, the person of the Son. He says that when you see these things taking place—the signs He gave for the end of the world, the end of history—then lift up your heads toward Heaven...
and wait for My coming. “We eagerly await a Savior from Heaven.” “We eagerly await a Savior,” says Holy Scripture, “from Heaven.” So He told us twice to wait: once for the one Comforter, the Holy Spirit, and once for the Son, the other Comforter. The first took place in ten years—
in ten days, because He said these things to them shortly before He ascended into Heaven. And the first command to wait was vindicated and fulfilled. The Comforter came ten days later. We now await the fulfillment of the second command: to wait for Him from Heaven. And since the first was fulfilled, the second will most certainly be fulfilled as well. This is why we await the coming of Christ. And this itself is a proof: since the Holy Spirit came, the Son will also come.
You see that the faith has many testimonies. What, then, of those who keep asking what will happen, and when, and how—when and how? One has only to study Holy Scripture, and there one will find all these testimonies that the Lord gave concerning His own coming as well. My dear friends, God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Ο Υιός μας κατασκεύασε. Όταν λέγει «ἔπλασεν ὁ Θεὸς χοῦν λαβὼν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς», προϋποθέτει χέρια. Ο Θεός όμως, ο αόρατος, δεν έχει χέρια, που δείχνει την ιδιαίτερη φροντίδα. Θέλει όμως και κάτι άλλο να δείξει: ότι είμεθα άμεσον δημιούργημα του Θεού Λόγου. Το ακούσατε; Πέστε μου, εδώ πού χωράει η θεωρία της εξελίξεως;
Λέγει σαφώς εδώ ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, που ερμηνεύει: το έδωσε ενεργεία και όταν ενεφύσησε και στην Πεντηκοστή. Και τι σημαίνει όταν λέγει, κατά την προφητεία, «εξαιρούμενός σε εκ θλίψεως»; Ότι θα σε εξαιρέσει, θα σε γλιτώσει δηλαδή, θα σε βγάλει από τη θλίψη. Ποια είναι αυτή η θλίψη; Είναι η κατεξοχήν και κορυφαία θλίψη που λέγεται θάνατος, διότι όλες οι άλλες θλίψεις είναι κατώτερες του θανάτου. Η κατεξοχήν θλίψη είναι ο θάνατος. Εδώ δεν υπενθυμίζει αυτό που σας είπα προηγουμένως, πώς δηλαδή θα πάρει ο άνθρωπος εκ δευτέρου το Πνεύμα το Άγιο και όταν θα γίνει η Ανάσταση των νεκρών;
διπλασιάζεις, τετραπλασιάζεις μάλλον τον χώρο. Αν πάρεις έναν κουβά, παίρνεις πιο πολύ. Αν πάρεις μαζί σου ένα τεπόζιτο, βάζεις πιο πολύ. Το θέμα δεν είναι θέμα ωκεανού, είναι θέμα δικής σου χωρητικότητας. Δεν είναι θέμα Αγίου Πνεύματος, είναι θέμα δεκτικότητας δικής σου. Εδώ όμως, όταν λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, ως να τους έλεγε ο Κύριος: «Και τώρα σας τον δίνω. Έχετε δοχεία, έχετε αγγεία». Τι ακριβώς είναι αυτό το δοχείον, αγαπητοί μου, το αγγείον; Διότι τι προσετέθη εις τους μαθητάς από την ημέρα της πρώτης Αναστάσεως του Χριστού, του Πάσχα, έως την Πεντηκοστή; Πέρασαν πενήντα ημέρες. Τι προσετέθη;
Τους είπε ο Κύριος ότι θα σκανδαλιστούν. Λέει: «Απόψε θα σκανδαλιστείτε μαζί μου». Ποιος ο σκανδαλισμός, ξέρετε; Κατά το «Πατάξω τον ποιμένα και διασκορπισθήσονται τα πρόβατα». Ποιος είναι ο ποιμήν; Ο Χριστός. Ποια τα πρόβατα; Οι μαθητές. «Πατάξω», θα χτυπήσω, λέει, τον ποιμένα, θα συλληφθεί δηλαδή ο Χριστός, θα δικαστεί και θα σταυρωθεί, και τα πρόβατα θα σκορπιστούν. Οι μαθητές πήγαν και κρύφτηκαν. Και τους είπε ο Κύριος να μη σκανδαλιστούν. «Γρηγορείτε και προσεύχεσθε», τους είπε. Δηλαδή, μένετε ξύπνοι, όταν τους άφησε για να πάει λίγο πιο πέρα να προσευχηθεί, «και προσεύχεσθε για να μην πέσετε σε πειρασμό». Τι πειρασμό; Του ποιος είμαι εγώ. Δηλαδή, συνελήφθη ο διδάσκαλός μας· τότε ποιον ακολουθήσαμε εμείς τρία χρόνια;
Ο διδάσκαλος. Ποιος είναι όμως ο διδάσκαλος;
