Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem gathers New Testament testimony showing that the Holy Spirit is a divine person who acts within the Church and the world. Through the Ascension, Christ presents His sanctified human nature to the Father, restoring the communion with God that humanity lost through Adam’s sin. The Spirit reveals that Satan has been decisively judged through Christ’s Cross, Resurrection, and Ascension, and guides the disciples into the fullness of divine truth.

As you will remember, we were still in the seventeenth catechesis of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. We had reached paragraph eleven, which we did not finish when we stopped for the Christmas holidays. Those of you who have the book will find us on page 221, specifically at the beginning of the second line. This catechesis concerns the Holy Spirit, and Saint Cyril cites examples from the New Testament that bear witness to the person of the Holy Spirit. Through the various passages he quotes, he naturally gives us only a selection, since there are very many passages in both the New Testament and the Old Testament, from which he has already cited quite a few. He wants to show not only that the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, is a person, but also what we might call the various aspects of the Holy Spirit’s divine uncreated energies. And so he continues his quotations from the New Testament: “And again the Savior”—that is, he draws upon the Lord and the Apostle Paul, and of course upon the whole New Testament
—and he says: “And again the Savior,” meaning, “And again the Savior said, ‘For if I do not go away, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.’”
He says: “If I do not leave, the Paraclete will not come to you. But if I leave—that is, if I go to heaven—then I will send you the Paraclete. I will send the Paraclete to you.” This is a very important passage, about which we can say a few words. Our purpose, of course, is not to give a very, very deep analysis, but simply to discuss it. Still, as the opportunity arises, we offer as much analysis as possible.
“If I do not go away...” You know that the disciples never wanted the Lord to leave. The mere mention that He would be going away filled them with sorrow, although they had no clear knowledge of where the Lord was going. They did not know. Indeed, when He told the Jews, “You will lose Me; you will not find Me; you will no longer see Me,” they said: “Where will He go? Will He perhaps go to the Gentiles or to the Greeks? What else might He do? Will He perhaps kill Himself?” Listen to the way they thought. No one could imagine what the Lord was going to do. He meant His Ascension into heaven. And so the Lord speaks these mysterious words: “If I do not go away, the Holy Spirit will not come to you.” That is why He told His disciples: “It is to your advantage that I go away.” For how, indeed, would they receive the Holy Spirit? Through the Holy Spirit we receive what we call the spiritual life and, thereafter, salvation. How could this come about? Why, then, did the Lord have to leave before the Paraclete could come? First of all, because He—the Lord Jesus Christ—would send the Paraclete. Do not be surprised by the words “would send.” They express a relationship, for He says, “I will send.”
“Him to you”—“I will send Him to you.” These words are written in John, chapter 16, verse 7. The Holy Spirit has the following relationship with the other two persons: the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father. Is this a small matter or a great one? It is so great that if we were theologians, if we examined it more closely and saw the spiritual consequences that flow from this position, we would not have had, my dear friends, this division of the Church from the Latins. For the Latins say that the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son—the well-known Filioque. Filioque means “and from the Son.” That is what Filioque means. And this became a famous point of controversy, as you see. Why, then, did this separation occur? It occurred precisely because this is a very great matter. Holy Scripture could not fail to mention such a great matter. First, therefore, it had to be made clear that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father. The Evangelist John says this—or rather, the Lord says it, and the Evangelist John records it: “who proceeds from the Father.” Here the word “who” means “the One who.” And now, in this passage, He says: “I will send Him to you.”
The relationship is this: the Son sends the Paraclete into the world. Thus, the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father alone, while He is sent by the Son. The Father, of course, may send the Spirit, just as the Son does. But procession does not belong to the Son; only the sending does. Both procession and sending belong to the Father. After all, at Christ’s Baptism, did not the Father send the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, and so forth? What is being expressed here? There is much to say—very much indeed. But this is not the time to go into it.
This is a great subject! But I would also like to tell you something else. Why could the Holy Spirit not come unless the Son had ascended into heaven? Was the Ascension only so that He could send the Holy Spirit? Was that all? No. That is one reason. The second reason is that the Son had to bring human nature into heaven. He had to bring there His own human nature, sanctified and pure—the human nature He received from us, yet without human seed, because
there could be no ancestral sin in the human nature the Lord assumed, and so forth. We discussed these things during the question period, when speaking about virginity, and we also mentioned them on a previous occasion, so let us not repeat them. He therefore had to present human nature to the Father as Adam had been in Paradise. For in Paradise, God had communion with our first-created ancestors. But when human beings sinned, that communion was broken, and the Holy Spirit was taken away—that is, He withdrew.
I am referring to what is said in the Old Testament, in the sixth chapter of Genesis: “My Spirit shall not remain upon them, because they are flesh.” My Spirit cannot rest upon these people. Thus, the Spirit of God is withdrawn. When we say “is withdrawn,” we do not mean that the Father takes the Spirit of God like an object, places Him in heaven, and leaves Him no longer present on earth. God is everywhere present, and the Holy Spirit is consubstantial with the Father and the Son. The expression “is withdrawn” means that the Holy Spirit no longer acts within human beings. God, so to speak, withdrew the Holy Spirit.
What must now happen for the Holy Spirit to be restored to the world—that is, for the Spirit of God to act within the world? What must be done? Human nature must be brought to perfection, because this is how God desires human nature to be. This could be accomplished only in the human nature of Jesus Christ. He therefore presents human nature to the Father. And then the Father, seeing the human nature of His Son, which He loves, sends the Holy Spirit into the world. That is why the Lord said: “It is to your advantage that I go away. If I do not go away, the Holy Spirit cannot come.”
To you! “And when He has come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment.” When He comes—the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit—He will convict the world, He says, concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment. What does this mean? Since Saint Cyril does not quote the entire passage, we shall read it here from Holy Scripture. Holy Scripture says: “But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away.”
“For if I do not go away, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; concerning righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.” Let us see what the Lord means here. When the Paraclete comes, He says, He will convict the world.
He will convict—take note—He will convict the world concerning sin. What is this sin? It is one sin. The text does not use the plural form, “sins”; rather, it speaks of one particular sin. What is it? The sin of unbelief in the person of Jesus Christ. In other words: Why did you not believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? The Holy Spirit, then, will convict humanity because they did not believe in Jesus Christ. My dear friends, you know that this is the fundamental criterion...
...of salvation or condemnation. You know this. However many good works you may do, however good a person you may be, however distinguished, great, and generous a benefactor of humanity, if you have not believed in the person of Jesus Christ, the God-Man, you are not saved. My dear friends, let us grasp this firmly. Nor, of course, is anyone saved merely by saying, “I believe,” if his life is not consistent with his faith. As Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, says: You say that you have faith; show it by your works. Works are the fruit of faith, but faith is the tree that produces this fruit. You cannot have truly good works
—or rather, works that are valid and acceptable in the sight of God—unless faith comes first. A person can perform good works outside the faith. Pay attention: good works outside the faith. Many people say: “He may not believe, but he is a very good person. Do you know how much almsgiving he does and how many good deeds?” This is said especially, for example, about Masons, or Freemasons. “They are good people,” they say. “They are very good people and perform so many charitable works.” Of course, I do not know to what extent they are good people or perform good deeds. That is another matter. It is not something established, but something that must be examined. Yet even if this were the case, such a person is not saved, because he does not believe in Jesus Christ and already belongs to a foreign religion. Therefore, faith is the criterion of salvation.
Faith is the criterion by which good works are judged. The Apostle Paul says something fundamental, and I ask you, if possible, to learn it by heart: “Whatever is not from faith is sin.” Whatever is not from faith—anything at all, any action you perform, anything whatsoever. Pay attention: even if you eat your food—yes, your bread, the meal set before you—and do not believe that what you are doing is the work of God, that God gives you this food to eat, even that is sin. This is why we pray at the table. If you like, this too is why we pray at the table.
Therefore, if you do not receive everything with faith, it is sin. Anything outside faith not only does not count, as though it were nothing, but is also sin. This is what the Apostle Paul says: “Whatever is not from faith is sin.” Please remember this. What the Lord said—“If you give a cup of water in My name, truly, you will have your reward”—is the other side of the same truth. Or rather, I mean that it is an example of what the Apostle Paul says. I did not express that correctly before. It is an example of the Apostle Paul’s teaching, because I give that cup of water out of faith: I give it in the name of a disciple, in the name of an Apostle,
because he is an Apostle of Christ. Then I shall have my reward. Then my deed, even this smallest deed—a cup of cold water—has eternal significance. People may perform all the good deeds in the world, but if those deeds do not bear the seal of faith, they are nothing. And not only nothing but, as I told you, sin. The Holy Spirit, then, will come to convict people because they did not believe in the person of Jesus Christ. You will see this on the day of the Last Judgment as well. You may say to me: “But the Gospel according to Matthew, where divine providence has recorded the substance of the Judgment, does not say this.”
Who told you that it does not? You know that every text in Holy Scripture has a second layer, a third, a fourth, and a fifth. Holy Scripture has many layers and depths beneath the surface. When it says, “Truly, insofar as you did not do it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did not do it to Me,” it specifically means “these least brethren of Mine.” The question here, then, is one of faith. He calls them brethren because, as you know, brotherhood among human beings has two dimensions. The first is our brotherhood according to nature, for we are all brothers and sisters according to the flesh. We all descend from Adam and Eve. Thus, we have...
...this first dimension: we are brothers and sisters according to the flesh. The other dimension is that of faith. In other words, you are my brother because both you and I believe. Are not people who share the same faith called brethren? Therefore: “Insofar as you did not do this to one of My brethren, you did not do it to Me. For I am the One who declared that this man is My brother. But because you did not believe this, you are condemned.” What, then, did they fail to believe? They did not believe in the person of Christ, the God-Man. This is unbelief. You see that the matter of faith is present here, and the whole law is contained there; but this is not the time to analyze it.
The Holy Spirit, both in this world and on the day of Judgment, will judge and convict people because they did not believe in the name of Jesus Christ. The second point is “concerning righteousness.” The Evangelist John states these things in a very condensed form and then explains them: “Concerning righteousness, because I go to My Father, and you see Me no more.” Do you know how concise the Evangelist John is, even though he sometimes seems long-winded—and he does have lengthy passages? Do you realize how much meaning he compresses into so few words? If you look at this passage, you may find it strange: “The Holy Spirit will also convict the world concerning righteousness, because I go to My Father.” Well, this is what it means: human justice
condemned Me as a deceiver. But then the righteousness of God will be revealed, for God will vindicate Me. This is why He says, “I go to My Father.” How so? Listen. When the Lord openly confessed before the full assembly of the Sanhedrin, in that solemn moment, the high priest asked Him, “Tell us, are You the Son of the Blessed One, the Son of God? Are You the Messiah?” And the Lord answered, “It is as you have said. I am.”
“And I will not merely answer you; I will tell you something even more specific.” He invokes Daniel’s prophecy concerning the Son of Man, who comes upon the clouds, and so forth. When Caiaphas heard this, he tore his garments and declared that the Lord was blaspheming. Where was the blasphemy? In His making Himself God. He had gone so far as to call Himself the Son of God in a unique sense. Pay attention: we are all children of God, but He is the Son of God in a unique sense. “You have heard the blasphemy,” Caiaphas said. In other words, Christ had claimed divine characteristics and divine attributes as His own. So what was their verdict? “He is deserving of death,” said the Sanhedrin.
Thus, the Lord was condemned by men, by the authorities of the Sanhedrin. But that trial and condemnation were unjust, because the Lord truly was God. What men failed to do, therefore, God Himself does: He vindicates Him. For if Jesus had falsely claimed divine characteristics and divine attributes for Himself, where should He have gone? Where Lucifer went. What did Lucifer do? Did he not claim divine characteristics for himself? What did he say? “I will set my throne upon the clouds of heaven, and I will be equal to God.” And he fell.
Lucifer, the bearer of the dawn, that Archangel, fell. Why did he fall? Because he succumbed to a terrifying and immense pride. If Jesus, then, had said that He was the Son of God in the same false and presumptuous sense, He should have gone down into Hades. But Jesus did not go into Hades; He went to His Father. And what does He say here? “Because I go to My Father.” If I deserved punishment, He means, I would go in the opposite direction, down into Hades. But through the Ascension I go to the Father. Therefore, the Father vindicates Me. And not only do I go there, but in My human nature I shall sit
at the right hand of God the Father. Thus, the Holy Spirit will also convict the world concerning righteousness. If you remember, when we studied the first chapter of Acts, I told you that Pentecost is nothing less than the testimony of the Holy Spirit that Jesus truly was the Son of God, because He was vindicated. He was vindicated by the Father, who received Him, and He was also vindicated by the Holy Spirit. For if Jesus had falsely claimed divine attributes, how could the Holy Spirit have come to affirm those whom Jesus had supposedly led astray, to illumine them, and to bring about the event of Pentecost?
The event of Pentecost is the testimony that Jesus spoke the truth, that He was who He said He was, and that Heaven vindicated Him. And so, “you see Me no more,” because He will go up into Heaven. Then comes the third point: “Concerning judgment,” the Holy Spirit will convict the world, “because the ruler of this world is judged.” Who is the ruler of this world? The devil. Of course, as Saint Cyril says, not a single obol belongs to the devil—not even one. He says this concerning the moment when the devil told the Lord, “I will give You all the kingdoms of the world if You worship me.” What can you give Him, when you possess nothing?
The devil does not possess even a single obol, he says. Yet if all the kingdoms are in fact under his dominion, it is only because God has permitted it. Because people did not believe in God, the devil was permitted to hold them in his power. Did you hear that? It is very important. This happens both to nations and to individuals. If you refuse to accept God, you come under the dominion of Satan—but only by God’s permission. Nothing belongs to the devil. Yet here, it says, the devil has been judged once and for all. “The ruler of this world,” He says, “has already been judged.” He has been judged and condemned. Why? Because through Christ’s Crucifixion and the events that followed—
the Resurrection, the Ascension, and so forth—Satan, the devil, was finally sentenced to definitive condemnation. When the angels fell from Heaven—Lucifer and the angels with him—the devil, Lucifer, was not yet brought to judgment. His condemnation was reserved for the end of history. He was not judged then. He did fall, because he could no longer retain divine illumination and theosis. He became darkened; he lost theosis. He could no longer possess it. Yet he was not condemned at that time. Satan’s punishment will come at the end of history, when he is cast into Hell. His condemnation is now irrevocable. It is finished: he has been judged and condemned. It is over.
Notice what happens when the demons, speaking through the possessed man of the Gergesenes, plead with the Lord: “Have You come to torment us before our appointed time? We beg You, do not send us into the abyss.” The abyss is Hell. “Allow us to go into the swine.” And the Lord permits them. You see that the demons know they will be condemned. They know it. The demons, as Scripture says, “believe and tremble,” yet the hour of their condemnation has not yet come. They stand accused, but their fate has now been decided once and for all. Definitively. And this would be revealed through the coming of Jesus Christ: the Holy Spirit would bear this testimony, since Christ had been vindicated.
He ascended into Heaven. Would you like to see a concrete example of this? My dear friends, when the Precious Cross is held before a demon-possessed person—that is, someone who has demons—what do the demons cry out? In the presence of the Cross, just as in the presence of the Saints, they cry, “I am burning! I am burning!” because the demons have been judged once and for all. And then there is another passage: “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth.” Saint Cyril now presents yet another passage spoken by the Lord.
Saint Cyril has spoken, and now the Lord says, “I still have many things to tell you. I still have many things to say to you.” He must again have said this at the Mystical Supper. “But you cannot bear now the things I would tell you”—that is, you cannot understand them. You cannot. When He comes—the Holy Spirit, whom Christ calls the Spirit of truth—He will guide you into all truth. Let us examine this. First, the Lord tells His disciples that they could not retain what He would tell them. That was perfectly natural, for two reasons.
The first reason was that they were sleepy. Truly, when you listen to the Word of God, you grow drowsy; your eyes begin to close. Many times, when I am listening to someone else speak, I close my eyes too. Of course, when I am the one speaking, I do not close them, because what would happen if I fell asleep up here?
But...
We close our eyes because we are tired. I have never condemned any of you when I saw someone’s eyes closing—I tell you truthfully. Many years ago, I once went here to the Christian Union Hall, where a physicist was giving a talk. I was there for two hours, and I had slept only three or four hours.
Well, I would close one eye, then the other, and then open the first one again. Of course, I was sitting right in the front, and the speaker could see me. He could see me! I was embarrassed—what could I do? At the end I told him, “Your talk was excellent; please forgive me. I was very tired, but I still managed to grasp something of what you said.” In other words, I could not hear everything. How could I? You will either sleep or listen; you cannot do both. So, my dear friends, the disciples were drowsy. First of all, they were exhausted from their journey and from everything they already sensed was about to happen to Jesus Christ. This is why He had told them, “Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, and believe also in Me.” He told them that even if they did not yet believe in Him, His Father—what did they have
to fear? “My Father is greater than I.” If you regard Me as merely a man and fear that you may lose Me, then I tell you that My Father—if this is how you wish to understand it—is greater, and He will intervene. What are you afraid of? You see, they were exhausted both physically and spiritually. Yet Scripture says this clearly, as do all the Evangelists. When they left the supper and went to the Garden of Gethsemane, they simply surrendered to sleep, outdoors, upon the ground. It was March, you know—the end of March—and it was cold. How do we know it was cold? They had lit a fire in the courtyard of Caiaphas and Annas, and Peter stood there warming himself. It was cold. Yet the disciples paid no attention to the cold or to anything else; sleep overtook them at once. The Lord then took the three disciples with Him—
Peter, James, and John—and even they, the foremost disciples, so to speak, fell asleep. Three times the Lord returned to them. “So, you are sleeping? Could you not endure watching with Me for a little while?” He went away, returned again, and once more found them sleeping. Is that not what Holy Scripture says? Tell me, please: under such conditions, what more could the Lord have told them? What more? “I have many things to tell you, but you cannot bear now what I would say to you.” You cannot; you simply cannot. The second reason is this: you cannot understand because you do not yet have the Holy Spirit, who would enable you to comprehend what I am telling you.
For no one can understand the Word of God without the Holy Spirit. A heretic does not have the Holy Spirit, and that is why he does not understand. He remains in his heresy because he does not have the Spirit of God to lead him out of it. This is why the Apostle Paul says—excuse me—that “a heretical man has turned aside,” from the verb meaning “to turn away.” He has deviated, just as a train runs along the rails until something suddenly happens, it is derailed, and it runs off into the fields. That is what happens to the heretic. If someone does not have the Spirit of God, he cannot understand anything. Holy Scripture is sealed with seven seals to anyone who does not have the Spirit of God. Indeed.
The Spirit had not yet come. How, then, could they understand such lofty things? This is why He says, “When the Holy Spirit comes,” which means that He had not yet come. Therefore, they were still lacking Him. “When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth.” He will guide you into the whole truth—into everything. Pay attention here. First, He says, “He will guide you.” That is, He will reveal the truth to you in a manner we might describe as guidance. Yet there is more to it than that. He will guide you into all truth—that is, into those things that I would have told you...
I cannot tell you these things now; He will tell them to you. And the Evangelist John goes on to add: “For He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.” I will dwell on this last point: “He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.” He will receive from Me and tell you. So “declare” is equivalent to “guide.” That is clear; you can see it. From where will the Spirit of God receive? Not something of His own; He will receive from Me. What does this mean? Those things that I would tell you, but cannot tell you because you are unable to bear them, the Holy Spirit will tell you.
This is very important. How important? What the Holy Spirit will say is precisely what Christ would have said. In other words, there is one teaching, not many: the one teaching of God. The Holy Spirit, then, reveals to us, guides us, and declares to us—to use the Evangelist John’s own verbs—the teaching of Christ. And He says, “all the truth.” Why “all”? By “all,” He means the whole truth; nothing will remain hidden. He will tell you the whole truth. What does this mean? Pentecost—pay close attention to this point—contains the fullness of revelation
of Christ’s teaching. There is no evolution in Christ’s teaching. Take care: I have told you before what the Christian Student Union says here. They accept the idea that Christ’s teaching develops or evolves, even at Pentecost. And they make this strange claim: that we in the twentieth century understand more than Christ’s disciples did. From a distance, you can already see that this is spurious. It is obvious. And they are wretched. Why do they speak this way? Because they do not have the Spirit of God. Anyone who says such things and persists in them does not have the Spirit of God. It is impossible. Therefore, here we have all the truth.
Everything that had to be said was revealed on the day of Pentecost. Therefore, what the Apostles would teach and write—what they would hand down, whether orally or in writing—is inspired by God. Pay attention to this. I say it for those who might object that the Apostles wrote these things. Yes, but what did they write, and who were they? If Christ is true God, would He have entrusted His teaching to these men if they did not possess what they needed to possess? Would He have entrusted it to them? Never, never. So what is echoed here? “All the truth.” Upon what is the Church founded? Precisely upon this point. Why? What do we say?
“In one”—in the Creed, this is a matter of faith—“in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.” What does “apostolic” mean? Exactly what we are now saying: the Church is founded upon what the Apostles wrote and taught, and upon what the Holy Spirit revealed to them—“all the truth.” One can see this clearly, very clearly. I will say it again: there is no evolution in the event of Pentecost. There is, however, a kind of development—if you wish to call it development—and it is this: you and I, for example...
In order to come to know something, we went to school, learned our letters, and read Holy Scripture. We read and reread it; we read the Lives of the Saints; and, if you wish, we also turn to the Fathers. For they did the same thing: they went to school and studied Scripture. Even though the Apostle Paul was inspired by God, he says to Timothy: “When you come, bring with you from Troas the books, and especially the parchments.” What were these? They were scriptural texts, most probably from the Old Testament. Most probably—though I would not rule out the possibility that Timothy was to bring a Gospel written by one of the Evangelists, perhaps Matthew or Mark, which is considered to have been written first, and so forth.
Mark was already Paul’s assistant, as was Luke. Consider the Gospel according to Luke: Luke was Paul’s assistant. I mention this to support the view that the parchments contained the Old Testament. Paul studied; had he not also studied before he came to know Christ? Therefore, our development—the development connected with Pentecost—is not a development within Pentecost itself, but within us, as we come to understand what the Spirit of God reveals to us. For whom have you ever seen in the history of the Church, even the holiest person, suddenly say, “I know everything”? Who has ever said that? No one. So, I will say it a third time: there is no development in Pentecost. The development is in us, because we grow, our nous—the spiritual intellect—develops, and we understand more and more. There is something else as well.
In the history of the Church, we encounter many things that are not found in Holy Scripture. And we say that the Spirit of God continually reveals God’s will to the Saints. Does this not mean, then, that we have a new revelation here? No! Why not? Because the things that the Spirit of God reveals to the Saints, though they are not written verbatim in Holy Scripture, express the spirit of Holy Scripture. Therefore, all the truth was present at Pentecost. What comes afterward might be called a revelation of new things, though in essence they are not new things at all.
It is just as when we take a text, examine it theologically, wrestle with it, and draw more and more from it. This is what the Spirit of God does. He continually brings forth something that may appear new, perhaps even in its wording. When Saint Athanasius the Great, for example, used the term “consubstantial,” the Arians accused him, saying that this term was not found in the New Testament. Yes, the term itself is not found there. But its meaning is the same, because it means “of the same essence.” And that the Son is of the same essence as the Father is something the Holy Spirit teaches. First of all...
The fundamental truth of Pentecost is that Christ is consubstantial with the Father. As I told you earlier, He had not usurped divine attributes; if He had, He would have gone to Hades. But since He ascended into Heaven, He is therefore consubstantial with the Father. He is consubstantial. And so Saint Athanasius uses the term “consubstantial.” The Spirit of God illumines Saint Athanasius the Great to use a new word, a new term. But where is the essential meaning of it found? It is found in Scripture: the Son is God and is one with the Father. This is what the Holy Spirit does throughout history. This is what He does. We might say that in every age He reveals what is needed at that time—nothing more. Apart from that, I say again for the fourth time:
The truth was revealed at Pentecost and is preserved in Holy Scripture. Nothing more. But since I jumped ahead in the passage in order to connect this with the words, “He will take what is Mine and declare it to you”—He will take from Me—what does that mean? He will take from My teaching and declare it to you. I now return to the preceding words: “He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.” He will tell you those things that He has heard. When it says, “He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak”...
This is, of course, simply an anthropomorphic way of speaking. It gives the impression that someone within the Holy Trinity is speaking—namely, the Father—while the Holy Spirit listens and then comes to tell us what He has heard. But that is not how things are. This is a human image, for Christ said that no one knows the things of a man except the man himself. So it is also with God: no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God, who searches even the depths of God. If the Holy Spirit, the third person, searches the depths of God, what depths are these? The depths of the Father and the Son. He has no need to hear. The expression is intended to convey the following:
The Father is the source of the Son and the Holy Spirit, yet the essence is one. It also means that the Holy Spirit does not say anything different. We might compare this to a trustworthy servant or a faithful messenger: he says exactly what he has been told. I will say it once more: he says exactly what he has been told. That is what a faithful messenger does. He receives the message and carries it to its destination. So here, when it says that the Holy Spirit speaks whatever He hears and says nothing on His own authority, it means that what He says is what God says—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The teaching is common to all three. There are not different teachings. That is the meaning. But there is something else of great importance.
“He will declare to you the things that are to come.” The translation is very simple: He will also declare to you those things that are coming. If I were to ask what this might mean, the answer is the prophetic gift within the Church. Yes, the prophetic gift within the Church. Do you understand this? Pay attention: the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, has been fiercely attacked by those who lack reverence and, of course, have neither the fear of God nor the Spirit of God. They say that Christ did not speak the things written there. But Christ did speak them.
Yes, He did. Recall our study of the book. Throughout the four years in which we examined the sacred text, my chief concern—one I never neglected—was this: whatever I explained to you from the Apocalypse, I connected with parallel passages, often word for word but especially in meaning, from the other books of Holy Scripture—from the Gospels, Acts, and the Epistles, as well as from the Old Testament and the Prophets. In this way it becomes clear that nothing in the Apocalypse is arbitrary. Yet at first glance, when someone reads the Book of Revelation, it can seem arbitrary. And because many of those who read it do so hastily...
The problem is not only the absence of the Holy Spirit, but also their superficial approach. And so they proclaim whatever they proclaim. Of course, one might form such an impression for a moment, but it is not true. Christ is indeed speaking there. First of all, there is the foundational statement of the Evangelist John: “On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit.” What does “I was in the Spirit” mean? “In the Spirit” means two things. First, that I myself was transported spiritually; my own spirit underwent a spiritual transport. And second, that I was under the Holy Spirit—that my own spirit was subject to the Holy Spirit—so that He might show me...
these things. And they are set forth as a history. What history is told? The Book of Revelation recounts the future of the Church. These are Christ’s words: “He will declare to you the things that are to come.” In this short phrase—only five words, including the article and the conjunction—“He will declare to you the things that are to come,” the entire foundation of the Apocalypse is contained: the Holy Spirit will declare the things that are to come upon the Church, that is, the future of the Church. And indeed, He outlines the future of the Church not only in the Apocalypse—or, if you prefer, also in the Apocalypse—because...
Do not the Evangelists record Christ’s prophetic words about what will happen then and afterward? And the Prophets of the Old Testament—take note of this—the prophecies of the Old Testament have not been exhausted. You know this. The Apostles Paul and Peter also affirm it. The Prophets have not been exhausted, because they speak not only of Christ’s First Coming, but also of Christ’s Second Coming; they speak of the history of the Church and even of what lies beyond the Judgment—beyond the Judgment. Read even a little of Daniel and you will see the angel telling him: “Now go to your rest; you will die. These things will take a long time to come to pass, and then the resurrection of the dead will take place.”
Then, he says, those who have done evil will rise—almost the same words Christ uses—as will those who have done good. And he says, “in the dust of the earth,” there in Daniel, “in the dust of the earth”; that is, from the earth’s dust they will rise, and so forth. Do you see? The Prophets have not been exhausted. I emphasize this to show you the great value of the Old Testament. Thus, the Spirit of God revealed the course of events as it is outlined in the Book of Revelation. Yet there are also particular courses of events, which are, of course, incorporated into that greater course.
But the Spirit of God also meets present needs and, amid those present needs, illumines the Church as to what she must do when faced with a particular situation. That is to say...
Step by step.
Saint Kosmas of Aetolia, as you know, prophesied certain things. But what he prophesied simply runs parallel to, or fits within, as I told you, the Book of Revelation and its account of the Church’s overall course. For we Orthodox Greek Christians are certainly not outside God’s plan—God forbid! So there was a pressing need: we were under Turkish rule. And Saint Kosmas prophesied certain things that concerned the Greek situation in particular. Revelation does not speak specifically about the Greeks, the Russians, or any other people. I have mentioned peoples who share the Orthodox faith.
It speaks about the whole earth. It is a universal book. Whoever interprets Revelation in an isolated, merely local way goes astray. But when a people is being sorely tried and passing through difficult days, the Spirit of God gives them guidance. This guidance does not contradict the Book of Revelation; rather, it is like—well, I must explain it to you.
Suppose I have a long, wide-ranging plan before me. I take a magnifying glass and focus on one point, and the glass enlarges that one point within the whole plan. In the same way, at a particular moment in history, the Spirit of God...
...magnifies something so that people can see it more clearly, because it concerns those particular people at that particular time and in that particular place. This happened in Russia, and it happened among us under Turkish rule, and it will happen again and again. Above all, it will happen so that we may know what we must do when the Antichrist comes. Will we, as some say, go and flee into the wilderness? What will it be like? You know, one of those rumors has recently been going around: “Gather food,” they say, “because sometime next month, or the month after, there will be a war, and Athens and Larissa will be leveled.”
Please, do you really believe such things? I beg you, please—this is idle talk. And what is more, the devil does this deliberately, deliberately, in order to make true prophecy look ridiculous. Remember what happened in Makrychori. There was a man—I do not know his name, and if I did, I would tell you. To see how the devil works, pay attention to what he did. The man had a dream in which someone told him, “Take this particular number, and you will win the lottery.” So he searched for the number, found it, and won a large sum of money. The fish had taken the bait. Then the devil came to tell him the great lie, after first baiting the hook by letting him win money with the number he had given him. He said to him, “Listen, you must tell everyone...”
“Thessaly will become a lake again, and it will happen next month.” It was summer when he was saying this. So the man began repeating it here and there. Two, three, perhaps four years have passed—I do not know exactly—and yet, you know, it was supposed to happen the following month. I understand your reaction. Did Thessaly become a lake? But in this way prophecy that comes from God is made to look ridiculous, while the devil produces imitations in order to accomplish what he wants. Our time is up. My dear friends, God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Θα καθίσω και στα δεξιά του Θεού Πατρός. Έτσι, το Πνεύμα το Άγιον θα ελέγξει τον κόσμο και περί δικαιοσύνης. Αν ενθυμείσθε, όταν κάναμε το πρώτο κεφάλαιο των Πράξεων, σας είχα πει ότι η Πεντηκοστή δεν είναι παρά η μαρτυρία του Αγίου Πνεύματος ότι ο Ιησούς ήτο όντως Υιός του Θεού, διότι εδικαιώθηκε. Εδικαιώθηκε από τον Πατέρα, που Τον υπεδέχθη, εδικαιώθηκε και από το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Διότι, αν ο Ιησούς ήτο σφετεριστής θείων ιδιοτήτων, πώς το Πνεύμα το Άγιο ήλθε να επιβραβεύσει ποιους; Εκείνους που τυχόν παρέσυρε ο Ιησούς, και να έρθει να τους φωτίσει και να έχουμε το φαινόμενο, το γεγονός της Πεντηκοστής;
Το γεγονός της Πεντηκοστής είναι η μαρτυρία ότι ο Ιησούς αληθινά μιλούσε, ήταν αυτό που είπε και Τον εδικαίωσε ο Ουρανός. Και συνεπώς «και ουκέτι θεωρείτε με», διότι θα πάει στον Ουρανό. Και το τρίτον: «Περί δε κρίσεως», θα ελέγξει «ότι ο άρχων του κόσμου τούτου κέκριται». Ποιος είναι ο άρχων του κόσμου τούτου; Είναι ο διάβολος. Βέβαια, όπως λέει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, ουδέ οβολός ανήκει στον διάβολο. Ουδέ οβολός. Το λέει αυτό πάνω σε εκείνο το σημείο που ο διάβολος είπε στον Κύριο: «Θα σου δώσω όλες τις βασιλείες του κόσμου, εάν με προσκυνήσεις». Τι θα Του δώσεις, αφού δεν έχεις τίποτα;
Ο ένας λόγος ήταν ότι νύσταζαν. Αλήθεια, όταν ακούτε εσείς τον Λόγο του Θεού, νυστάζετε, νυστάζετε, κλείνετε τα μάτια σας. Εγώ πολλές φορές, άμα είμαι ακροατής, κλείνω τα μάτια μου. Όταν ομιλώ, βέβαια, δεν κλείνω τα μάτια μου, γιατί αλλιώς, αν με έπαιρνε και ο ύπνος εδώ πάνω, τι θα γινόταν;
Αποκαλυμμένο ό,τι έπρεπε να ειπωθεί. Την ημέρα της Πεντηκοστής. Γι’ αυτό εκείνα που θα διδάξουν οι Απόστολοι, εκείνα που θα γράψουν οι Απόστολοι, δηλαδή εκείνα που θα παραδώσουν είτε προφορικώς είτε γραπτώς, προσέξτε, είναι θεόπνευστα. Το λέγω για εκείνους που τυχόν θα έλεγαν ότι τα γράψαν οι Απόστολοι. Ναι, αλλά τι έγραψαν και ποιοι ήσαν; Διότι, εάν ο Χριστός είναι αληθής Θεός, θα ενεπιστεύετο σ’ αυτούς τους ανθρώπους, εάν δεν είχαν εκείνο που έπρεπε να έχουν, τη διδασκαλία Του; Θα την ενεπιστεύετο; Ποτέ, ποτέ. Συνεπώς, τι απηχεί εδώ; «Πάσαν την αλήθειαν». Πού είναι στηριγμένη η Εκκλησία; Ακριβώς σε αυτό το σημείο. Γιατί; Τι λέμε;
