Summary

The lecture resumes Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s seventeenth catechesis and explains how standardized page and line numbers support precise citation of patristic texts. Ecumenism and the branch theory are rejected for treating religions and confessions as partial paths to one truth, whereas the lecture identifies Jesus Christ and the Holy Trinity as the fullness of truth. True discernment of God within creation is presented as a gift of the Holy Spirit that recognizes creation’s wisdom and purpose without identifying God with nature.

We are still in Saint Cyril’s book of catecheses, in Catechesis 17, paragraph 11. It is on page 220, toward the end—that is, at line 33.

Let me also mention this. Those of you who have books will see some numbers in the margin: 5, 10, 15, 20. So when we give the page—say, page 220—we also ask: at which line? The text is coded in this way. It is coded. The Migne edition follows the same system. When we reach line 30, it is marked 30, and now we shall...

Therefore, we are at line 32, not 33 as I told you: “And again He says.” This is the passage. That is how we can very easily find what we want. And when we wish to cite it in writing, we note it as follows: Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, Catecheses—or Catechesis Seventeen—then page 220, line 32. That is how a reference is written. When we see such a reference in a book, we can go from the book we are reading to the original texts and find the passage we want. In this way, one can work very effectively with ancient texts—that is, with the writings of the Fathers and other ancient works, such as those of classical Greek literature.

The works of our literary tradition—philosophical, historical, and all the rest. Their editions use this system of numbering, so we can very easily find what we are looking for. Now then, “And again He says: ‘And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Paraclete, that He may abide with you forever: the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, because He abides with you and will be in you.’” I remind you that in Catechesis 17 Saint Cyril presents passages to his catechumens.

These passages are taken from the New Testament, because in the preceding catechesis he had used passages from the Old Testament—a selection, of course, since there are so many. Now he makes a selection from the New Testament of passages that reveal and bear witness concerning the Holy Spirit. His purpose, therefore, is not to expound the passages themselves, but through them to present the Holy Spirit. That is what he is doing: establishing the truth of what he says. Of course, in each case we see, so to speak, a particular way in which the Holy Spirit acts. We are now making use of that here and offering a brief analysis of certain...

such references and passages—a brief analysis, naturally, because if we had to examine every passage at length, we would never finish. We do this for our own spiritual benefit, since we may assume that Saint Cyril’s catechumens already knew many things. I say “assume” because catechesis was not something in which the catechumens were hearing all these things for the first time, knowing nothing of them beforehand, as though all this material were being presented to them for the first time. No. A person could remain a catechumen for one, two, or three years. Think about that. Would he have remained completely ignorant of these truths? No. Did they not study Holy Scripture? Of course they did.

Of course. That is why we are astonished that Saint Cyril passes over so many important matters without explaining them more fully: they were already familiar to his audience. Would you like another example? Suppose today we were to take the orations of Saint Gregory the Theologian, delivered in a small chapel, as we might call it. It appears to have been a private meeting house, because at that time the heretics had taken possession of all the churches of Constantinople. From there came the place called Holy Anastasia—not perhaps because it was a church dedicated to Saint Anastasia, but because from there came the resurrection of Orthodoxy. That goes without saying.

In any event, it was a small place with a small audience. How many were there—fifty, one hundred, two hundred? It was a small place. Saint Gregory himself says somewhere that we surrendered the house—that is, the church buildings—to the heretics, while we have the One who dwells in the house, namely God. They possess the walls, but they do not have God. That is what he means. And there he delivered what are known as his Theological Orations. Today, to follow and read those orations, we need what we might call specialized knowledge. We find them difficult—not because the language itself is necessarily difficult, but because we lack a theological frame of reference.

Do we possess that knowledge? Then how did his listeners understand those orations? Quite simply, they were well instructed. And it is not only the orations of Saint Gregory the Theologian, which are, after all, explicitly theological. My dear friends, we also have orations by other Fathers, and we are astonished that their audiences could understand them.

The Christian faithful as a whole were better instructed then than they are today. Discourses once addressed to ordinary people have now become subjects of research and study in theological schools, at the university level. Yet these things were not spoken, gentlemen, so that university theologians might study them. They were delivered for pastoral reasons to the people of God, who understood very well what was being taught. Do you see? Now, here he says, “And again”—that is, once again the Lord says—“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Paraclete, that He may abide with you forever, that He may be with you forever: the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, because He abides with you and will be in you.” This passage is not...

merely a passage concerning the Holy Spirit, cited as confirmation. Let us pause now over just one point: “whom the world cannot receive.” It cannot receive Him because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know, in particular, that this passage comes from the Gospel according to John, chapter 14, verses 16 and 17. John the Evangelist also expresses this teaching in his epistles, especially in the first: “You have the anointing of the Holy Spirit, and you are able to see, to know, and to understand.” What does he mean when he says that the...

world cannot receive the Holy Spirit because it neither sees Him nor knows Him? Does this mean that He is something indefinable, something unknown? Let us see. First, the world cannot receive the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit is not present in the world in that sense. When we say “world,” we are using a very important word, as it appears in Holy Scripture. Here, at least, it has two meanings. First, there is “the world” in the moral sense. Second, there is “the world” in the sense of a multitude—a number of people. We say, “There was a crowd in the square,” or, “There were many people in the church.”

What does “the world” mean here? A number of persons, a multitude of individuals. When John the Evangelist—excuse me—says that God so loved the world that He sent His Only-begotten Son, and says in chapter 13 of his Gospel that the world might be saved through Jesus Christ, what does “world” mean there? It means humanity as a multitude: human beings. We might say today that the world consists of five billion people. But when Holy Scripture says, “Do not love the world or the things in the world”—the same Evangelist says this, especially in his epistles—and when the Apostle Paul says, “The world is passing away,” he means: do not become attached to what we call the world, and...

Saint James, the Brother of the Lord, says: “And what is the world? The pride of life, and so forth, and the desire of the eyes.” In other words, television. The desire of the eyes—what we are going to watch—finds its culmination, you know, in television. Television is the height of the pride of the eyes, of the desire of the eyes. I do not know whether anything could surpass television in enabling people to see what they see. And do you know what might surpass it? Perhaps the actors could come right out of the box. You may ask, “How could that happen?” How should I know? That is why I say I do not think there can be anything beyond it. Or perhaps, together with the picture, they might send us smells. How should I know? What more can I say? In any case, we have an image. That image is enough. And now we have even made it colorful.

I would say that it is nothing other than the desire of the eyes. I think it is now the supreme and most extreme example. That is how it seems to me. So what does “world” mean here? It means the world in the moral sense. “Do not love the world.” As you know, the Greek word kosmos can also mean adornment: “and their kosmos,” that is, their adornment. The word kosmos in the sense of adornment occurs in Holy Scripture and in the New Testament. The Apostle Peter uses it when he speaks of a woman’s adornment, saying what her true adornment is. So it is a word with many meanings. Here it says that the world cannot receive Him. But how could it receive Him, since the Holy Spirit is not in the world...

—the world, that is, in the moral sense? He is present in the world, but can the Holy Spirit rest in a place where people sin, deny God, or do anything else of that kind? Impossible. The Holy Spirit is in the world to help people enter the Church. This is a prompting of the Holy Spirit. We encountered it in Saint Cyril’s preceding catechesis. He urges the world toward the Church. The Holy Spirit will save, illumine, guide, teach, comfort, and do all else within the Church.

No—not apart from the Church, but within the Church. And when we speak of the Church, we mean that I participate in her life because through my Baptism I am one of her members. In other words, the Holy Spirit cannot act in the world as He acts within the Church. One work of the Holy Spirit—and I shall say it a second time—is to urge people toward the Church.

The great work will take place within the Church. Thus, “the world cannot receive Him.” Quite right. How can the world receive the Holy Spirit, since the Holy Spirit acts only within the Church? For if He also acted outside the Church in the sense—without going into too many details—of saving...

of saving people, then what purpose would the Church serve? Why would the Church exist at all? Therefore, the Holy Spirit cannot save outside the Church. I say this because, as you know, a question was raised last year during our question period, and I did not answer it because I regard it as an enormous subject. I have not yet had an opportunity to say anything about it. What is Ecumenism? Of course, I have already given you a rough, general idea of what Ecumenism is, and you know it in broad outline from various occasions. But I have not yet offered a more systematic answer by devoting one or two hours to it. Well, such ideas exist within Ecumenism. It was many years ago—very many years, perhaps twenty—when this question was once raised with me in certain theological...

theological circles. Not that they came specifically to consult me; one person simply asked me, “Do you know, might the Holy Spirit also act outside the Church?” I then realized that this was an erroneous position they held. I said, “No. The Holy Spirit acts to bring a person into the Church, because you cannot even enter the Church—not even enter—unless the Holy Spirit draws you.” The Apostle Paul says this clearly. In order to be baptized, must you not confess the divine-human nature of Christ? “No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.” Therefore, to reach the point of confessing that you believe, so that you may then be baptized, the Holy Spirit must illumine you and enable you to accept that Jesus is God.

But this is nothing other than that prompting we spoke of. For if this does not happen, how will a person enter the Church? The work of the Holy Spirit outside the Church is limited to that, and nothing more. For how could the Holy Spirit save outside the Church? You know where this leads and where it is heading. You have heard this, and please do not think that Ecumenism is something that has ended. It is active and making progress. One day here in Greece we will rub our eyes in disbelief. Today we talk about millennialists and this group and that, but perhaps we have not yet seen Ecumenism in any tangible way. Yet it exists; it is becoming established and growing into something immense. Take notice. And indeed, it has taken hold of some stubborn heads—very prominent, stubborn heads, sometimes even patriarchal...

and archiepiscopal ones. May God forgive me for what I am saying. Yes, yes, indeed, these people cling to ecumenist positions and ideas. Yes, take notice. This is why I sometimes tell you—and I have said it more than once—that you are rational sheep and must be watchful over yourselves. If we should ever tell you something false, do not listen to us. Have I not told you this? Am I not telling you once again? There are people of high rank and great office who cling to such heretical positions. After all, all the great heresies arose from clergymen, and indeed from bishops. Arius, of course, was not a bishop, but other heresies have come from bishops. Be careful! Be very careful! That is why I called them stubborn heads. I do not know...

how anyone can describe such people, except to ask God to have mercy on them. Yet they remain in their positions, you see, governing flocks and influencing others. Ecumenism, then, proceeds in the following stages: first, union with the Roman Catholics; then with the Protestants, since, as Christians, we supposedly belong to the same family; and afterward union with all who believe in some god, regardless of who that god may be. I cannot speak of a false god and a true God as though they were equals, because there is only one true God. We cannot have many true gods. There is only one. And then we are to have a union on the grounds that everyone believes in one god, regardless—and now listen to the insult and blasphemy—

regardless of whether this god is called Jesus Christ, Allah, Buddha, or anything else. So then, we have mixed everything together into one confused blend.

Of course, the reasons for this, how it came about, where Ecumenism began, and what it aims to achieve are a long story. And behind Ecumenism, there are what we might call hidden political operations; do not be surprised. Ecumenism is, of course, being driven by Rome and the Pope, because Rome has worldwide ambitions. The poor man does not understand that in this way he is betraying the Church of Rome—indeed, he has betrayed it. And this is not only true of the present Pope; he is also betraying his own faithful. They do not understand this. What can I say? What can I say? And they become instruments of those political interests. For the first time in history, did you not see it—did you not see it in photographs and even in cartoons?—the Pope receives the Chief Rabbi of Rome. There is even a very striking new cartoon: the Pope is shown from behind, dressed in his cassock and portrayed as the bride, while the Rabbi, wearing trousers, holds the Jews’ seven-branched lampstand. It suggests that they are going to be married,

bridegroom and bride, entering into a marriage. What kind of marriage is this? Does he not understand that all these things are being directed by centers that are hidden, fearsome, and demonic, and that Zionism is chiefly behind them? They do not understand it. Yet because everyone benefits in some way, they ultimately accept Ecumenism, simply because they lack theological depth. It is not there. But when we possess that theological depth, my beloved, we will become witnesses, even martyrs, and we ought to become such witnesses. There is a particular kind of martyr called a confessor: one who goes as far as martyrdom for his own faith.

We have such people within our own tradition. Especially in times when heresies flourish, we have the confessors. They are witnesses and martyrs: they confess the truth and remain faithful even unto death. So the argument goes: since we can all have one god, the Holy Spirit can be found anywhere. Anywhere at all. And if He can be found anywhere, that means you can be saved, because the Holy Spirit will save you. Ah, so I can be saved even if I am a Muslim, a heretic, or anything whatsoever. Do you see the delusion? Do you also understand why Saint Justin Popovich said that...

Ecumenism is not merely a heresy but a pan-heresy, a heresy embracing all heresies? That expression is significant. The so-called branch theory is nothing other than this: every people, every religion, and every confession possesses one small piece of the truth, while no one possesses the whole truth. If, then, we join all these groups together—Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists—if we unite them and fuse all these pieces together, we will supposedly possess the whole truth. But the truth is Christ. Does the Muslim have Christ? Does the Buddhist have Christ?

Will he be saved? Do you understand how serious this is? My brethren, be careful. The word of God states it clearly: “whom the world cannot receive.” The world cannot receive the Holy Spirit. Why? Because, it says, it neither sees Him nor knows Him. Let us now examine these words, “sees” and “knows.” How are we to understand “sees”? The Greek word means “beholds” or “sees.” How are we to understand this beholding—this seeing of the Spirit of God? And then there is the other word: knowing the Spirit of God. As for beholding or seeing the Spirit of God, you may ask: Do the faithful see the Spirit of God...

while others do not? But, my beloved, I do see the Spirit of God. Can the Holy Spirit be beheld? Can God be beheld? Woe to the person who has not seen God. Once, when I read a statement by Saint Symeon the New Theologian—a statement he makes more than once—I was seized by such deep discouragement, so very deep, that I fell into despair and melancholy. Listen to what he says: a clergyman who has not seen God in this present life will not see Him in the life to come either.

“Oh, how dreadful!” I said. I asked myself, “How, then, will I be saved?” It was terrifying. I assure you, I felt very troubled. But no one should despair. One must say, “I will keep striving, and God will provide.” In time, a person comes to understand these things better. For otherwise you too might now enter into despair and ask, “How? How can this be?” My beloved, this “seeing”... Does not Holy Scripture say, “No one has ever seen God”? No one has ever seen God, nor can anyone ever see Him—not even in the age to come, not even in the Kingdom of God. What is it that no one can see? The essence of God. What, then, can I see in this present life? God’s divine uncreated energies.

And the highest, the supreme divine uncreated energy of God, as we understand it, is the Uncreated Light. How many of the Saints have seen the Uncreated Light? My beloved, there we shall see it without end. In this present life, someone may see it only briefly, or perhaps not at all. Does that mean he will not be saved? Who, then, will be saved? Only those few Saints who saw the Uncreated Light? Will no one else be saved? The Uncreated Light is a divine uncreated energy of God. Now, just as sunlight, when separated into its parts, yields the various colors, so the Uncreated Light may be understood in terms of God’s particular divine uncreated energies.

Light also has other effects: it produces motion, heat, and chemical reactions, does it not? Indeed it does. What, then, does it mean to have theoria, the divine vision of the Light, and how can I see God through His divine uncreated energies? I see God when I perceive His divine uncreated energies in my life and in the world: God’s love, God’s wisdom, God’s providence, and God’s governance—the way He governs the universe. But you may ask, does not the learned scientist also see the wisdom of God? Ah, here we come to the crucial point. How do I differ from him? What is the difference?

We find a very great distance between ourselves and the learned man. He looks at creation and studies it. But a person who does not have the Holy Spirit can never see God within creation. He cannot! Truly, he cannot! Even if he speaks about God, what he says will remain vague, for philosophers also speak about God. But which God? Pascal expressed it this way: “I do not want to hear about the God of the philosophers, but about the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Indeed, when people speak merely of a god, the meaning is very vague. Might this god be identified with creation itself?

That would be a pantheistic understanding. There are various publications, little booklets that I believe most of you have seen, which discuss how science, and learned men, speak about God. There are many such booklets. They serve as a kind of handbook, an aid for telling those who do not believe in God that this scientist believes and that scientist believes. But if we were to examine how each of these scientists believed in God, we would be horrified. They speak about God, but He is not the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

He is not the Holy Trinity. The god they speak of is an abstract god: either a god understood in a deistic way—that is, deism—or a god intertwined or identified with creation—that is, pantheism—or something else. As I told you, you would be horrified. One such booklet cited Einstein. Einstein was Jewish, and so he did not believe in the true God. You may ask whether his belief was Jewish or simply monotheistic; I do not know how you wish to understand it. The point is that the true God is the Holy Trinity. Nothing else. Of course, the Holy Trinity is fully revealed in the Old Testament, fully, but the expression and manifestation of this revelation become explicit...

in the New Testament. The Word is also present in the Old Testament, though He had not yet become man. What distinguishes the New Testament above all is that the Word becomes man. That is the heart of it. Yet in the Old Testament we see the Word, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. There are many passages about the Word, many about the Holy Spirit, and many about the Father. This is clear. But our perception and understanding of it become clear in the New Testament through the Incarnation. That is the great thing. And why does God say, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? It is an allusion to the Holy Trinity. Yes, indeed. What I wanted to tell you is that, even if learned and prominent people speak...

one of them speaks of a higher power, and someone else tells you, “He believes.” What does he believe? He is an unbeliever, because he does not speak of Jesus. What I want to tell you is that such people do not have the Holy Spirit, because they do not behold Him; they do not see Him. For the most part, they do not behold Him, though they speak about Him. And because they do not have the Spirit of God, they do not speak rightly about God. Do you understand this? Again I ask you, especially those of you who are educated, to understand this well. If at some point you wish to make a confession of faith, do not say vaguely, “I believe in God,” because someone may then merely regard you as a religious person. Say, “I believe in the Holy Trinity.” That is the proper confession.

One more point: without the Holy Spirit, a person beholds nothing. And when such people see wisdom within creation, wisdom within created things, listen to the expressions they use: “How wise nature is, to have placed this little thing there in order to resolve a problem! How wise nature is!” Nature? But this implies pantheism, because God alone is wise; nature is not wise. If, then, you call nature wise, you can see the pantheistic tendency. How many times did our teachers at school tell us that nature is wise! Do you understand? Thank you.

Such a person does not understand wisdom and does not confess it rightly. He sees only that the object before him is something remarkable. But you must have the Holy Spirit in order to understand the wisdom of God: not to think that God is contained within creation—forgive me, not to think that creation itself is God—but to recognize a God who transcends creation. To grasp and comprehend this, you need the Holy Spirit. If, then, you can perceive the divine uncreated energy of God’s wisdom and the divine uncreated energy of God’s love... You know that many people see wisdom in creation, yet they cannot discern love. Or can they see love? No, they cannot. They cannot see love at all. Nor can they see God’s governance in any way.

We speak of love when it is really providence; people confuse the two. They say, “This thing has thorns. That thing is ugly. That harms human beings. There are microbes that destroy people. Why is this so? How can it be?” They cannot grasp these things. They cannot. They cannot. As for God’s governance, of course they can see the so-called natural laws which, in a certain way, uphold the created order. But they can never grasp the course creation is taking or where it will finally arrive. This is what governance means: the course of creation and where it is going. In other words, what is the meaning of the existence

of our creation? They cannot grasp this. Do you understand, my beloved? Only someone who has the Spirit of God can grasp it. Only such a person. And then, do you know what happens? He beholds the Holy Spirit; he sees Him. With what eyes? With the spiritual eyes of his soul. I would even say that sometimes he also sees Him with his bodily eyes: in the beauty and purpose of creation, in God’s divine uncreated energies at work throughout history, and so forth. He sees these things vividly. Do you know how vividly? So vividly that he bursts into tears. Do you know how vividly? So vividly that he bursts into tears.

No one bursts into tears unless he sees. The world does not have the Holy Spirit. Only the Church and the faithful have Him. And then there is the other phrase: “Neither does it know Him.” This is not the same thing. No, it is not the same. For example, I behold and I know. I see a gentleman standing before me. I am seeing him for the first time. Of course I see him, but I do not know him. Therefore, beholding is one thing and knowing is another. So this is not a tautology or a figure of speech in which one idea is expressed through two terms. No. It says that the world “neither sees the Spirit of God nor knows Him.” What does it mean to know the Spirit of God? It means to know who He is—to the extent, of course, that the Holy Spirit allows me to know Him.

What is this knowledge of the Holy Spirit? It is theology. Saint Cyril gives these two catecheses in order to help his catechumens know the Holy Spirit. This is theology. I was reading a lecture by a foreign Orthodox theologian. The lecture was given in New York, though in an Orthodox setting, by an Orthodox speaker. He referred to Saint Diadochos of Photike and Saint Maximus the Confessor. I came across something that impressed me tremendously. Listen. I will certainly speak to you about this again, because it is a subject rich in meaning. Saint Diadochos of Photike says that the Holy Spirit gives His

gifts to the faithful. But what is the highest gift? It is theology—that is, the knowledge of God. It is the highest gift. I had always sensed this myself. In fact, about two weeks ago, a young scientist came to our monastery. I have known him since he was a child. I do not know whether he is here this evening. I would be glad if he could hear what I am about to say. He told me about an ascetic who had the gift of clairvoyance, and he related an incident to me. Pay attention: clairvoyance is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

It means that I see through events and through things that are not transparent but opaque. I am able to see through them. How could I see at this very moment what is happening in the central square of Larissa, or what is happening outside this church? I can see it. I see. A person who has the gift of clairvoyance—the word itself means clear sight—sees through things that cannot ordinarily be seen because they are opaque. He sees what is happening, even at a great distance. The young man said that this ascetic had the gift of clairvoyance, and I do not deny it. He mentioned an incident that was somewhat doubtful. I did not pay much attention to it, because it does not impress me. Listen, and do not be troubled by what I am saying: it does not impress me. The incident concerned whether or not someone would have a child.

That does not impress me. Even if you do not have a child, life goes on. And someone told you that you would have a child. So what came of it? What impresses you about that? I ask again: what impresses you? Do you know what is truly impressive? The knowledge of God—theology. This is what Saint Diadochos of Photike says: the highest gift is theology, the knowledge of God. Of course, all these things are gifts of the Holy Spirit; we do not deny them. But why should I remain on such low ground? Why should I not ascend to the highest peaks? Yesterday—what day was yesterday? Sunday, yes. As I was leaving, there were about twenty, perhaps a little more—twenty-five—mountaineers from Thessaloniki, with their climbing gear and so forth.

Indeed, if those people from Thessaloniki ever listen to this recording, they will say, “Ah, he said something about us too.” They had climbed Mount Kissavos, come down on foot, reached our monastery, had a coffee, and left. It is a great thing to conquer peaks—that is what I mean. Not plains, but peaks. The theologian then writes that a young man in Athens—for, as I told you, the lecture was given in America—once said to him, “Father, why do you say that only you who have studied theology possess theology?” Let me make a brief aside here: theology

The theology we are speaking about has nothing to do with theology as an academic discipline at universities. It may be connected with it, if it chooses to be. If it does not, then it has no connection at all. And if atheists study to become theologians today, you can understand how much connection there can be. So why can we not also possess theology? The speaker comments on this and says, “Indeed, every believer can become a theologian.” When? How? When he begins to know God—and, in this particular case, the Holy Spirit. This, then, is what the Evangelist John says: the world cannot receive the Holy Spirit because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. Do you see how important this is? It is very important. But let us go a little further.

Again he says, in another passage: “These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you. But the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name...” The Paraclete—that is, the Holy Spirit, who also bears the name Paraclete—whom the Father will send in My name. Do you see the bond among the three Persons? “He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” That Paraclete will teach you everything and remind you of everything that I have told you.

Here too we have important points, as the Evangelist John relates them in the fourteenth chapter. What does he say? “He will teach all things; He will bring all things to remembrance.” First, “He will teach.” The Holy Spirit is the Teacher. Saint Cyril says further on—much further on: “The Paraclete descended from heaven, the guardian and sanctifier of the Church, the guide of souls, the pilot of those tossed by storms, the light of those who have gone astray, the judge of those who struggle, and the one who crowns those who have conquered.” The Holy Spirit is the Teacher. Could the disciples fully understand everything Christ told them, since the Spirit of God had not yet been given to them in the fullness of His presence—the fullness of His bestowal? But were they entirely without the Holy Spirit? Take note. No, God forbid, no. They were devout Jews, and every devout Jew had the Spirit of God, just as all the great righteous people of the Old Testament did. Were they without the Holy Spirit? No. Besides, could they have followed a man—Jesus? What did they see? They saw a man. Could they have abandoned everything if they did not have the Spirit of God? Impossible. And then...

Philip told Nathanael what he had heard, and Nathanael said, “Teacher, You are the King of Israel.” Was he without the Holy Spirit? When the rulers of the people—the learned and prominent men—denied the Lord’s messianic identity, they did not have the Spirit of God. Sadly, they were without the Holy Spirit. Or consider Matthew the tax collector: he heard Christ’s preaching and said to his fellow tax collectors and their families, “I am giving you one final meal,” a farewell meal for his colleagues and companions. The Lord also sat at that table. Then Matthew bade them farewell and left everything behind.

Could he have done this if he did not have the Spirit of God? Otherwise, he might eventually have said that he had been deceived, as others are deceived and admit their error. But the disciples did not later say, “We were deceived.” They had the Spirit of God. They were not without the Holy Spirit. As I told you, they did not yet have the fullness of the Holy Spirit’s bestowal. That was awaited at Pentecost. Thus, they understood certain things from the Lord’s teaching, but not fully. Do you know what the crucial point was? They had not yet learned who Jesus Christ was. To them He was only Rabbi, the Teacher. Christ even reached the point of saying to them, “Why are you afraid that the Jews will arrest Me?” At the Mystical Supper He said, “My Father is greater than I.”

In other words, if you understand Me merely as a man, and consequently you are afraid and troubled, and if, when I say “My Father,” meaning God, you fail to understand that God is almighty—then, since God is almighty, what are you afraid of? “My Father is greater than I.” Pay attention: He is not greater, but He appears greater to your eyes. Since you do not know who I am, I tell you this because you see Me as a man. This is what the phrase means: as what do you see Me? Since you see Me as a man, then My Father is greater than I. What are you afraid of? This is the interpretation of that much-discussed passage. There is no other interpretation. Many interpretations are offered, but this is the principal one. Pay attention: they did not know who the Lord was. Tell me, if I know that He is God, who has the power to overturn everything, would I go to defend Him?

Would I cut off the ear of Malchus’s servant with a small knife? Is it possible that I should defend God, that I should save God—I, I myself? This is what happened. At Pentecost, my beloved, they learned who Christ is—not even at the Resurrection. First of all, after the Resurrection the disciples disobeyed Christ, who had told them, “I will meet you in Galilee.” They did not go, and He graciously appeared to them in Jerusalem.

Thank you. They learned who the Lord is when the Spirit of God came. Therefore, the Lord now tells them, “Those things which I could not teach you because you did not have the fullness of understanding, since you did not yet have the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit will teach you.” How so? Did Christ not say, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now”? You cannot hold them or retain them. Indeed, you cannot, because you do not yet have the Spirit of God. Therefore, when the Spirit of God comes, He will teach you those things that I did not teach you. Do you know what this means? Open your ears wide and listen. Are they open? Is anyone asleep?

It is late. My watch says five minutes to ten—five minutes to ten at night. So pay attention.

It means that the Holy Spirit continually teaches within the Church. This is what we call the teaching of the Fathers; it is the Tradition of the Church. Why? Because the Holy Spirit is continually teaching. To express this, our Church puts it very simply: Holy Scripture and Tradition are of equal authority. This is precisely because the Holy Spirit continually teaches within the Church. Let me give you a small example. Some say that Christ told His disciples to fast on Wednesday and Friday. But where is that written?

It is not written in the New Testament. Yet something else is written in the New Testament: the matter of fasting is treated as something already established in the Old Testament. Therefore, we would refer back to the Old Testament. The Lord does not institute fasting in the New Testament; He simply presents it in its proper form: “But when you fast...” Thus, He presupposes the fasting instituted in the Old Testament. When you fast, conduct yourself in this way. Do not be a hypocrite; do not look gloomy; do not behave in this or that way, but behave properly. He corrects what human beings had misunderstood. So what does the Lord do? Fasting is already instituted. But did He speak of Wednesday and Friday?

What is that? It is a practical detail. Who would teach it? The Holy Spirit. To whom? To the Apostles. The book known as the Didache of the Twelve Apostles speaks about Wednesday and Friday, reflecting Apostolic teaching. Thus we see that the Holy Spirit teaches. When you say, “But where is it written?” and reject it, take care, my brother: you are rejecting the teaching of the Holy Spirit within history through His Saints. Did you hear that? And now the second point, because our time is ending: “And He will bring all things to your remembrance.” He will remind you of everything.

Here, when He says, “He will remind you,” do you know what that presupposes? Knowledge that has been forgotten, or knowledge that is unclear. In other words, the things I taught you, which you either failed to pay attention to or forgot—take note: either you failed to pay attention to them or you forgot them—then the Holy Spirit will come and remind you of them. And then come those surprises when we say, “How many times have I read this in Holy Scripture! I know it, and yet I do not know it. Only now is its depth being revealed to me.” Who brings it back to your remembrance? The Holy Spirit. You knew it and forgot it; you knew it only vaguely. The Holy Spirit came to remind you of it. And so, the Holy Spirit...

acts, teaches, and explains, and this, of course, is no small matter. And now, very quickly, one last passage: “But when the Paraclete comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth, who proceeds from the Father...” He proceeds from the Father and is sent by the Son; He does not proceed from the Son. “He will bear witness concerning Me.” He will bear witness about Me. What will He testify? Who I am. In the Old Testament, we have this declaration of God: “I AM.” “I AM.” The Holy Spirit will come to illumine you, bearing witness that I, Jesus...

am the One who said in the Old Testament, “I AM”—that is, the Lord. He will come not only to teach you this, but also to bear witness to it. And this is no small testimony: that I am “I AM”; I am the Lord. He will bear this witness concerning Me, as it says in John 15:26. The proof that this is no small matter is that very many people, precisely because they do not have the Spirit of God, cannot receive the testimony concerning the person of Jesus Christ. Indeed, a little further on—God willing—we shall look at this next Monday.

God says that He will bear witness concerning Me: that, that, that. There are three instances of the word “that.”

The world, which does not have the Spirit of God, can never understand these things. Only the person who has the Spirit of God can understand them. How, then, can I say that Jesus is the Lord of the Old Testament? He is the Lord: I receive this testimony and feel its truth within me. Few...

are those who believe that the God of the Old Testament is not the Lord of the New Testament—that is, Jesus Christ. Few are those who turn against the God of the Old Testament. They are few.

So, to receive this testimony, you must have the Spirit of God. This testimony is given only by the Spirit of God. When, then, can we say that we have the Holy Spirit? When we also have the testimony that Jesus is the Lord of the Old Testament.

That is all for tonight, my beloved.

ο οικουμενισμός είναι παναίρεσις, όχι αίρεσις, παναίρεσις. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό αυτό. Η θεωρία εκείνη των κλάδων, όπως λέγεται, η branch theory, δηλαδή η θεωρία των κλάδων, δεν είναι τίποτε άλλο παρά: τώρα κάθε λαός, κάθε θρησκεία, κάθε δόγμα έχουν ένα κομματάκι αλήθεια. Κανείς δεν την έχει ολόκληρη. Αν λοιπόν συγκολλήσουμε όλες αυτές τις περιπτώσεις, Ορθόδοξοι, Παπικοί, Προτεστάντες, Μωαμεθανοί, Βουδιστές, τα ενώσουμε, όλα αυτά τα συγκολλήσουμε, τότε έχουμε ολόκληρη την αλήθεια. Μα η αλήθεια είναι ο Χριστός. Ο Μωαμεθανός έχει Χριστόν; Ο Βουδιστής έχει Χριστόν;

Θα σωθεί; Αντιλαμβάνεστε πόσο μεγάλο πράγμα είναι αυτό; Αδελφοί μου, προσοχή. Λοιπόν, «ὃ ὁ κόσμος οὐ δύναται λαβεῖν», το λέγει σαφώς ο λόγος του Θεού. Δεν μπορεί ο κόσμος να πάρει το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Γιατί; Γιατί, λέει, ούτε το βλέπει ούτε το γνωρίζει. Για να δούμε πάνω στο «βλέπει» και «γνωρίζει». Πώς θα θεωρήσουμε, πώς δηλαδή θα το δούμε αυτό το «θεωρεί»; Θεωρώ θα πει βλέπω. Πώς θα το κατανοήσουμε αυτό το «θεωρώ», δηλαδή βλέπω το Πνεύμα του Θεού; Και το άλλο, γινώσκω το Πνεύμα του Θεού. Σχετικά με το θεωρώ, το βλέπω το Πνεύμα του Θεού, θα μου πείτε: οι πιστοί το βλέπουν το Πνεύμα του Θεού;

Έχω... άλλες δράσεις του φωτός, κινητικές δράσεις, θερμικές δράσεις, χημικές δράσεις, δεν έχουμε; Έχουμε. Λοιπόν, τι θα πει τώρα έχω τη θεωρία του φωτός και πώς μπορώ διά των ενεργειών να βλέπω τον Θεό; Όταν βλέπω τις ενέργειες του Θεού στη ζωή μου και στον κόσμο: την αγάπη του Θεού, τη σοφία του Θεού, την πρόνοια του Θεού, την κυβέρνηση του Θεού, πώς κυβερνάει το σύμπαν. Μα, θα μου πείτε, τη σοφία του Θεού δεν τη βλέπει και ο σοφός επιστήμων; Α, εδώ τώρα. Σε τι διαφέρω εγώ από εκείνον; Σε τι διαφέρω;

Πολύ μεγάλη απόσταση βρίσκουμε από τον σοφό. Βλέπει την κτίση και τη μελετά. Δεν μπορεί ποτέ να δει τον Θεό μέσα στην κτίση αυτός που δεν έχει το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Δεν μπορεί! Μα, δεν μπορεί! Κι αν μιλήσει για Θεό, τότε αυτό που θα πει θα είναι ασαφές, γιατί και οι φιλόσοφοι μιλάνε για Θεό. Ποιος ο Θεός; Είναι εκείνο που έλεγε ο Πασκάλ: «Δεν θέλω να ακούσω για τον Θεό των φιλοσόφων, αλλά για τον Θεό του Αβραάμ, του Ισαάκ και του Ιακώβ». Έτσι, πράγματι, όταν μιλάνε για έναν Θεό, αυτό είναι πολύ ασαφές. Αυτός ο Θεός μήπως θα ταυτίζεται με την κτίση;

Λέμε αγάπη, ενώ είναι πρόνοια. Τα μπερδεύουν. Σου λέει: «Αυτό το πράγμα έχει αγκάθια. Εκείνο είναι άσχημο. Εκείνο πειράζει τον άνθρωπο. Υπάρχουν μικρόβια που καταστρέφουν τον άνθρωπο. Γιατί και πώς και τι;» Δεν μπορεί να τα πιάσει αυτά. Δεν μπορεί. Δεν μπορεί. Και την κυβέρνηση του Θεού, βέβαια, μπορούν να δουν τους νόμους, λεγόμενους φυσικούς, που κατά κάποιο τρόπο στηρίζουν τα πράγματα στη δημιουργία. Αλλά ποτέ δεν μπορούν να συλλάβουν αυτό το ταξίδι της δημιουργίας, πού θα φτάσει. Αυτό θα πει η κυβέρνηση, αυτό το ταξίδι της δημιουργίας, πού πάει. Δηλαδή, ποιο είναι το νόημα της υπάρξεως;

Αν, δηλαδή, εσείς με εκλαμβάνετε ως άνθρωπον και, συνεπώς, φοβείστε και θορυβείστε και θεωρείτε ότι, όταν λέγω «ο Πατέρας μου», που είναι ο Θεός, ο Θεός δεν είναι παντοδύναμος, τότε λοιπόν, αφού είναι ο Θεός παντοδύναμος, τι φοβόσαστε; Ο Πατέρας μου είναι μεγαλύτερος από μένα. Προσέξτε, δεν είναι μεγαλύτερος, αλλά κατά το φαινόμενο στα μάτια σας. Αφού δεν ξέρετε ποιος είμαι εγώ, τότε σας λέγω, αφού με βλέπετε σαν άνθρωπο —αυτό θέλει να πει η φράση, σαν τι είμαι—, αφού με βλέπετε σαν άνθρωπο, τότε, τότε ο Πατέρας μου είναι μεγαλύτερος. Τι φοβάστε; Αυτό το περιλάλητον, ξέρετε, χωρίον, αυτή είναι η ερμηνεία του. Δεν είναι άλλη η ερμηνεία του. Παρουσιάζουν πάμπολλες· αυτή είναι η κυρία ερμηνεία του. Προσέξτε, δεν ήξεραν ποιος είναι ο Κύριος. Πέστε μου, αν ξέρω ότι είναι ο Θεός που έχει τη δύναμη τα πάντα να ανατρέψει, θα πάω να τον υπερασπιστώ;

Ευχαριστώ. Έμαθαν ποιος είναι ο Κύριος όταν ήρθε το Πνεύμα του Θεού. Συνεπώς, τους λέει τώρα ο Κύριος: «Εκείνα τα οποία εγώ δεν μπόρεσα να σας διδάξω, γιατί... διότι δεν είχατε την πληρότητα κατανοήσεως, αφού δεν είχατε το Πνεύμα του Θεού, θα σας τα διδάξει το Πνεύμα το Άγιον». Πώς; Δεν είπε ο Χριστός ότι «πολλά έχω να σας πω, αλλ' ου δύνασθε βαστάζειν άρτι»; Αλλά δεν μπορείτε να τα κρατήσετε, να τα συγκρατήσετε. Πράγματι. Γιατί δεν έχετε το Πνεύμα του Θεού. Όταν θα έρθει, λοιπόν, το Πνεύμα του Θεού, θα σας διδάξει εκείνα που εγώ δεν δίδαξα. Αυτό ξέρετε τι σημαίνει; Ανοίξτε καλά τα αυτιά σας να το ακούσετε. Τα έχετε ανοιχτά; Μήπως κανείς κοιμάται;

Σημαίνει ότι το Πνεύμα το Άγιον διαρκώς διδάσκει μέσα στην Εκκλησία. Και αυτό λέγεται η διδασκαλία των Πατέρων, είναι η παράδοση της Εκκλησίας. Γιατί; Γιατί το Πνεύμα το Άγιον διαρκώς διδάσκει. Και η Εκκλησία μας, για να δείξει αυτό, το δείχνει με το εξής απλούν: η Αγία Γραφή και η Παράδοση, λέγει, είναι ισόκυρα, ίσου κύρους. Ακριβώς διότι το Πνεύμα το Άγιον διαρκώς διδάσκει μες στην Εκκλησία. Ένα μικρό παράδειγμα. Ο Χριστός είπε στους μαθητάς Του να νηστεύουν Τετάρτη και Παρασκευή, λένε μερικοί. Και πού είναι γραμμένο αυτό;

Δεν είναι γραμμένο στην Καινή Διαθήκη. Είναι γραμμένο, όμως, κάτι άλλο στην Καινή Διαθήκη: το θέμα της νηστείας, και μάλιστα σαν δεδομένο της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης. Συνεπώς, θα ανατρέχαμε στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Ο Κύριος δεν θεσμοθετεί τη νηστεία στην Καινή Διαθήκη, αλλά απλώς την παρουσιάζει σε σωστή φόρμα. «Συ δε όταν νηστεύεις»· άρα προϋποθέτει τη νηστεία που εθεσμοθετήθη στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Να είσαι έτσι κι έτσι. Μην είσαι υποκριτής, μην είσαι σκυθρωπός, μην είσαι έτσι κι έτσι, αλλά να είσαι έτσι. Διορθώνει εκείνο που παρεξήγησε η ανθρώπινη... Τι κάνει, λοιπόν, ο Κύριος; Είναι θεσμοθετημένη η νηστεία. Μίλησε για Τετάρτη και Παρασκευή;
