Summary
Saint Cyril interprets Noah’s dove, the ark, wood, and water as partial types of the Holy Spirit, the Church, the Cross, and baptism. The diverse animals gathered in the ark prefigure people of different characters entering the Church, being transformed, and sharing a new equality in Christ. Christians should ask the Father above all for the Holy Spirit and worship him in the Holy Spirit and in Christ, who is the Truth.

We are in the tenth weekly catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril. We had reached the tenth paragraph—those of you who have the book, page 220, from the beginning: “According to some, the dove in the time of Noah was a partial type of this. For just as in his time salvation and the beginning of a new creation came through wood and water, and the dove returned to him toward evening with an olive leaf, so also, they say, the Holy Spirit descended upon the true Noah, the Creator of the second creation, who gathers into one people of every kind of disposition. These were prefigured by the different kinds of animals in the ark. At His coming, the spiritual wolves graze together with the lambs; the Church has the calf, the bull, and the lion feeding together, just as to this day we see secular rulers being guided and taught by the clergy.” I read that whole passage because that was where the full stop came. Now, however, we shall take it point by point. “Of this.” Of what? Of the dove. “According to some, the dove in the time of Noah was a partial type of this.” Ah, forgive me, there was a full stop there: the Holy Spirit is known to have appeared
at the Baptism of the Lord in the form of a dove. The Holy Spirit did not become a dove, nor is the Holy Spirit a dove. The words “like a dove” indicate a manner of manifestation: He appeared in the likeness of a dove. This word “like” is strongly emphasized in Holy Scripture, just as in the other passage concerning Pentecost, “like tongues of fire.” In other words, the Holy Spirit is neither tongues of fire nor a dove; this form, this image, is used so that He may become visible. That is why the sacred writers very rightly include the word “like,” meaning “as though.”
Saint Cyril says here that, in a partial way, the dove in Noah’s time was a type of this dove—that is, of the Holy Spirit. Thus, as he says, salvation then came through wood and water. How did salvation come? There was the flood, and there was the ark, made of wood and floating upon the waters. They were saved, therefore, through water and wood. The Apostle Peter also says this in the New Testament. In the same way, here too we have salvation—as Saint Cyril will explain much later, though I shall tell you now—through water and the Spirit, as Christ said, or again through water and wood. What is the water? Baptism. What is the wood? Christ’s sacrifice, the Cross. For if Christ had not been crucified, we would not have had the Mystery of Baptism and, consequently, salvation. For John states plainly, and in a way that challenges us to take notice,
that blood and water flowed from His side. The challenge to pay attention lies in the words: “He who saw it has borne witness, and he knows that his testimony is true.” The one who saw it bore witness and knows that his testimony is true. Why would he say this? It is a challenge to us.
He challenges us to understand that an event of deeper significance is concealed within what happened at the side of Jesus. As all the Fathers of our Church interpret it, this passage of Scripture tells us that this event signifies the Mystery of Baptism and the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Baptism, the Mystery of Baptism, is the entrance; the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is the goal, the fulfillment. All these things, then, were types in Noah’s time. Noah was saved through water and wood.
Indeed: “Through wood and water his salvation came about,” and also “the beginning of a new creation.” Here we now have the beginning of a new birth or creation. In Greek, the word is written with a single nu, which means “creation.” We have the beginning of a new creation. It is well known that the first creation is that of Adam and Eve. The second creation begins with Noah, the new forefather of the human race. Significantly, God repeats to Noah what He had said to Adam: “Be fruitful and multiply and have dominion over the earth,” and so forth, with only one difference. When He tells him, “You shall
eat these things and those things,” He repeats exactly what He said to Adam, but with one difference: He had not spoken to Adam about eating meat—that is, about making use of the animal kingdom. But because Adam’s descendants had taken it upon themselves to use the animal kingdom in violation of God’s command, God now renews the covenant regarding food. He had spoken to Adam only about the plant kingdom. Now He permits meat, but again with one condition, saying: “You shall not eat the animal’s blood, but only its flesh.”
God had His reason for doing this. There is much that could be said about it, but this is not the time. And so we see precisely what Saint Cyril says here: “the beginning of a new creation”—the starting point, the beginning of a new creation. A little later he will tell us that Noah was a type of Jesus Christ; that is, Noah stands as a type of Jesus Christ. In what respect? In that he is the originator of a new creation, a new birth. He says shortly afterward, “the Creator of the second creation.” For, he says, the Holy Spirit “descended upon the true Noah.”
Jesus Christ is the true Noah. Why does he call Him “true”?
In the fifteenth chapter of John, Christ says, “I am the true vine.” Why does He say “the true vine”? This means that another vine had existed before, but contrary to expectation, it proved not to be true; it became false and worthless. Do you know what God’s people are called? A vine. At that time, it was the Hebrews. Indeed, does not one of the Psalms say that You, O Lord, “removed”—the Greek word is metēres, with a circumflex—You lifted up and transplanted Your vine from Egypt to this place, the Promised Land? Do you know what that means? The vine is the people of Israel,
the chosen people, God’s own possession. The Greek word periousios does not mean “beloved,” as one student told me after finding something like that in his schoolbook. It even said, “The Byzantines considered themselves a periousios people,” implying that everyone else was inferior. That is not what it means. Periousios does not mean “beloved.” It comes from the word for property or possession. The people of Israel were God’s possession, His own people. We must rid ourselves of that mistaken understanding of the expression “chosen people.” Afterward, the Church becomes the new people belonging to God, as you will see further on. Thus, God’s own people, the field belonging to God, are also called a vine.
By “vine” here we do not mean a single grapevine, but the whole vineyard—the field containing all the vines. In one verse from the Psalms, the Psalmist laments: “You have allowed, O Lord, the wild boar to trample Your vineyard.” Recall the words from the Psalms that the bishop says while holding the dikirion and trikirion: “O Lord, O Lord, look down upon this vine which Your right hand has planted.” What is this vine? Is it the old vine, Israel? No. It is the new vine. For the first vine, contrary to expectation, had already come to nothing. God says:
“I planted a choice vine.” The Greek says sorek, a particular variety of fine grape—something like a sultana grape, we might say. It is not actually a sultana; I offer that only as an example. Let us say a choice grape, a grape of excellent quality. “How, then,” He says, “did you become a vine of Sodom and Gomorrah,” a false and sinful kind of vine? Is this the sort of vineyard I planted? Here we also see the role of free will. Although the people are God’s possession, they are not without free will. The vine failed in its purpose, and now Christ comes to create a new vine, which will be God’s new possession. That is why Christ said: “I am the true vine.”
The true vine—not that first vine of the Old Testament. Therefore, since I am the true vine, a new people belonging to God is created. The people of the Church, then—the Christians—are now God’s own people, His possession. The Byzantines regarded Christians in this sense as God’s own people. They did not mean that they were proud and considered themselves important while everyone else was nothing. They meant that the Church was God’s possession. I say the Church, not simply the Byzantine state; for do not forget that in Byzantium the Church and the state coincided, just as in Greece, at least until now, the Church and the state have coincided. Yet they are beginning no longer to coincide.
This separation is being brought about in our own days. The people, then, were God’s own possession. The Church is God’s possession. Please understand this. Thus, the Lord is the true Noah, while the Noah of old is a type of the Lord. Everything has its typological meaning, including the ark. Saint Cyril will tell us a little later that the ark is a type of the Church, and so forth. Now pay attention to something extremely important. He calls Noah “the beginning of a new creation,” but he calls the second Noah, the true Noah, “the Creator of the second creation.” There is a very great difference here,
as great as the difference between type and reality, between symbol and what it signifies. The difference is immense. What is it? When Noah entered the ark, there were his wife, his three sons, and their three wives—eight souls in all. Noah and the rest of his family possessed the same human essence that they had received from their forefather. Consequently, Noah carried ancestral sin within him; he carried Adam’s fallen human nature with him. But when Christ comes, He takes—as I have told you before—from the human nature of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), without the seed of man. He does so precisely because He is fashioning a new creation in an ontological sense, at the very level of human being. Noah was not a new creation ontologically; he was merely a new creation in a moral sense, if you like. Everyone else drowned, and this man remained to bring forth a new world; yet within his very cells he carried the old world. Christ, however, does not receive His human nature through human seed. This is why His birth is from a Virgin. Had He received His human nature through human seed, we would not have had an ontologically new creation. Yet He takes His humanity from the Most Holy Theotokos because He had to take it from our own nature, so that it would not be something alien to us, while at the same time being a new creation. This is of tremendous importance.
This is the great difference between Christ and Noah. And take careful note: it is unique. Someone may tell you that through another religion a person can learn certain partial truths and become a good person. Yes, I have no objection to that, assuming that some good things can be found wherever they may be found. A person might thus become disciplined, and so forth. But that person could never have ontological salvation—never! Those who say otherwise make the mistake of thinking that Christianity is simply a moral renewal. Christianity is not moral renewal. It is ontological renewal,
by virtue of the flesh of Christ, which truly is a new creation. That is Christianity, and these people do not know it. That is why they tell you, “Christianity is good; Buddhism is good; Hinduism is good,” and whatever else. They may contain some good things, but they do not give us ontological salvation. Do you understand this, my dear ones? It is staggeringly great—staggeringly great. It is uniquely great. Let us understand it, so that we do not drag Christianity down and make it one among the other religions, which are merely natural religions and do not save. Returning to the dove, Saint Cyril says that it “returned to him toward evening, bearing an olive leaf; so also, they say, the Holy Spirit descended upon the true Noah.”
Just as the dove returned to Noah, so here the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus Christ. Besides, Saint Cyril told us at the beginning that this was only a partial type. He even uses the precise grammatical form meaning “as a partial type.” Just as the dove returns there, so the dove comes here upon Jesus Christ. Saint Cyril also finds another typological meaning. There were many different animals inside the ark. These various animals prefigured Christ “gathering into one people of every kind of disposition, of which the different kinds of animals in the ark were a type.” Each animal had its own manner and character. Does not every animal have its own manner? They were therefore a type of the people who would enter the Church, each with his own character and disposition. And the astonishing thing is that, although each person has his own character and disposition, within the Church we ultimately witness this: “The spiritual wolves graze together with the lambs.” The spiritual wolves—the malicious people—graze together with the little lambs,
the gentle and goodhearted people. What does this mean? It means that those who were once malicious wolves have now become gentle, because they believed in Christ and cast off their former disposition and way of life. And, as it is written, “the Church has the calf, the bull, and the lion feeding together.” The Prophet Isaiah also says this, in the eleventh and sixty-fifth chapters of Isaiah. Thus we now see that those who enter the Church with their various dispositions all graze together. And Saint Cyril adds something even more beautiful: “Just as to this day we see secular rulers being guided and taught by the clergy.”
We see it even today. I mentioned this one or two Sundays ago, if I remember correctly. The mayor of the city sits on a chair nearby, and beside him sits the town hall attendant. You see them sitting side by side. At some official ceremony, of course, the attendant could never sit beside the mayor. That is perfectly natural. But enter the Church, and the attendant who believes in Christ sits beside the mayor who believes in Christ, and both receive the teaching of the Church. Here we see where the equality of human beings is found. Is this something small, or is it something immense? This is why, my dear friends, all these questions about freedom, equality, and so on...
could have been resolved within the Church. But because, unfortunately, Christianity has not been lived faithfully, nor will it be—the Lord Himself says that, as we approach the Last Things (eschata), the love of many will grow cold and many will fall away because of Him—we are not moving toward better days, but toward worse ones. Therefore, the Kingdom of God, in the form in which we would like to see it, cannot be realized on earth. It can be realized only within us, within the few who form the faithful remnant among the great number of Christians. And the Kingdom of God will find its complete fulfilment not in this present world, but in what we call the Kingdom of Heaven,
where we shall at last possess the full reality, after the resurrection of the dead. Therefore, as some explain it, the spiritual dove descended at the time of Christ’s Baptism to reveal that He is the One who saves believers through the wood of the Cross, and who, toward evening, would grant salvation through His death. The Holy Spirit descended, as I was telling you last Monday. Why did He descend? To sanctify Christ? Far be it from us to say so! To bring His human nature to theosis? Far be it from us!
His human nature was holy and brought into theosis from the very moment of conception, for the Theotokos herself had already been brought into theosis. Did the Angel not say, “The Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God”? When, then, would He be called holy? Thirty years later, when He came to the Jordan? Would that mean that Jesus Christ was not holy before He was thirty? He was holy in the sense that He was entirely separated from sin—completely free from it. A question was raised, and this is a good opportunity to say something about it now, rather than during the questions next Monday: Was there even a theoretical possibility that Christ, as man, could sin? Not even theoretically.
There was no possibility whatsoever—not even a theoretical one—that Christ could sin. So you understand, and I emphasize it once again, how gravely those people sin who fabricate films in the manner of Kazantzakis, as do those who go to see such films because, as they say, they want to see “the other side.” What other side? “Perhaps,” they say, “there are other points of view.” It is as though we did not possess the true faith concerning the person of Christ and had to go and see whether He committed some sin, hoping to catch Him in the act! What a dreadful horror! My dear friends, Christ was separated from sin from the moment of His conception. His body had been brought into theosis, as you may remember from what I said last time. And so...
Could there have been any such possibility? When the Holy Spirit descends upon human beings, He sanctifies and cleanses them. But when He descended upon Jesus, He did not descend in order to cleanse Him. Saint Cyril says this very clearly: “The spiritual dove descended at the time of the Baptism.” Why did He descend? “To reveal that this is He”—to reveal that Jesus is the One—“who saves those who believe through the wood of the Cross.” He is the One who saves through the wood of the Cross those who would believe in Him. And further: “He who, toward evening, would grant salvation through His death.” What does this mean?
“Toward evening” means the ninth hour. When the Lord was pierced with the spear, after the ninth hour, the Lord was already dead, for He first had to die. His work—the work of salvation—had now been completed, when He said, “It is finished.” What does “It is finished” mean? The verb is in the perfect tense. What had been finished? The work. “The work, My Father, which You gave Me to do, I have finished,” He said in His high-priestly prayer. But that work was brought to its full completion upon the Cross. The work of salvation was finished, as Saint Cyril says: “He who, toward evening, through His death...”
Through His death, He grants salvation. Once Christ had died upon the Cross, the work was finished. Then the centurion came and pierced His side with a spear, and water and blood flowed out, revealing that through His death He grants us the Mysteries of salvation: Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.
And now, my dear friends, we come to the tenth paragraph.
“These matters may perhaps be explained in another way as well.” In this next paragraph, and in those that follow, Saint Cyril will gather together everything said in the New Testament concerning the Holy Spirit. Wherever it seems appropriate, we can offer a brief explanation of what the Lord says about the Holy Spirit. Here Saint Cyril says, “These matters may perhaps be explained in another way as well.” In other words, he acknowledges that everything I have just explained to you may also admit of another interpretation. “But now we must also hear the words of the Savior Himself concerning the Holy Spirit.”
We shall also hear what Christ said concerning the Holy Spirit: “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.” He says that anyone who is not born of water and the Spirit will not enter the Kingdom of God. What does He mean by water? Baptism. What does He mean by the Spirit? The Holy Spirit. Therefore, to enter the Kingdom of God, a person must be born anew through water and the Spirit. When do we receive the Holy Spirit? At our Baptism. But let me ask one question, without commenting further on this passage. I wish to draw attention to just one point.
Is it truly necessary for a person to be saved through water? In other words, if I am not baptized, can I not have the Holy Spirit? Holy Scripture tells us that I cannot. The Lord’s words are clear. You neither possess the Spirit of God nor enter the Kingdom of God, because if you possessed the Spirit of God, you would enter the Kingdom of God. Therefore, you do not possess Him. Baptism must come first. And what is Baptism? Do you remember that late professor from Panteion University—I cannot recall her name—who said that Baptism was ridiculous? “Baptism is ridiculous.” Do you remember? It was not very long ago, perhaps two or three years. She regarded Baptism as ridiculous. But, my dear friends, Baptism was also considered ridiculous by the...
commander of the Syrian army—what was his name? Naaman. His name was Naaman. When this man went to be cleansed of his leprosy, the Prophet Elisha told him to go and wash seven times in the Jordan River. It truly sounded like a ridiculous answer. Imagine going to a doctor with a serious illness and being told, “Take seven baths, either in your bathtub or in the sea, and the illness will pass.” Could those washings themselves cure leprosy? No. It was not the washing in itself; it was faith. And so, when Baptism is performed with water...
It is performed with water because this is what God wills. Since God wills it, who am I to advise Him to use something else? Accepting this shows that I believe. Someone may ask, “How can the stain upon the soul be washed away? How can ancestral sin be removed by water?” Yes, my dear friends, just as Naaman the Syrian was ultimately cleansed of his leprosy. At first he became angry. He too said that the whole thing was ridiculous. Then his servants told him, “The prophet did not ask you to do anything difficult. Try it.” He did so, and he was healed. This was a type of Baptism. Is the water effective in itself? No, my dear friends. It is faith. Faith in what, in this case? In the divine-human person of Christ, the God-Man. You must believe in Christ and in Holy Scripture. You must believe so that...
the Holy Spirit may come, because if you do not believe in Christ, the Holy Spirit does not come. And the first praxis—the first concrete act—of faith is to be baptized; that is, to accept what Christ says. You accepted it, and you were saved. This is the only point I shall take from this saying of the Lord. I shall go no further, because, as I told you, if we remained with every passage and said everything that could be said about it, we would never finish. “And from the Father: How much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” This is another passage, from Luke 11:13. For the sake of time, I shall simply say Luke 11:13. What is being said here?
If someone asks the Father for the Holy Spirit, He says, how much more will the Father give Him the Holy Spirit? In what context does He say this? In the context of anything else we might ask from God. “Lord, save us”—that is, deliver us from a flood, a war, or an illness. “Lord, grant us this or that; give us food to eat.” If the Lord told us to ask for these things and that God would give them to us, how much more will He give us the one thing truly worth asking for—and that is none other than the Holy Spirit.
My dear friends, I do not know whether we ask God for this amid all the things we request. In our prayers, I believe we ask about our work, our schooling if we are children, our examinations, our health, this matter and that—we ask for a thousand things. But have you ever considered that we should ask for the Holy Spirit? If I were to tell you at this moment—and I am not actually asking you to do this, but let us suppose that I did—“Raise your hand if you have ever said in your prayer, ‘Father, give me Your Holy Spirit,’” I do not know who would raise a hand. I fear there would be very few. I believe it simply has not occurred to us to do this. And yet, if there is one thing we truly need, it is the Holy Spirit. Therefore, I earnestly beg you...
Ask for whatever you need. The Lord told us to ask for all that we need, but above all to ask for the Holy Spirit. And if we have the Holy Spirit, then we shall have everything else as well. Let us now leave this passage. What does Saint Cyril mean when he adds, “and also that”? He means that Christ also spoke this passage. He said: “God must be worshiped in Spirit.” And again: “The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth.”
The Lord said this to the Samaritan woman when she expressed the belief held by the Samaritans, which stood in contrast to what the Lord was saying: “You Jews say that God must be worshiped in Jerusalem, while we say that God must be worshiped on Mount Gerizim. Which of us is right?” Then the Lord answered her: “Believe Me, woman: God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth.” Why does He not simply say that God seeks worshipers? Pay careful attention to this point: they are to worship God...
in Spirit and truth.
Saint Cyril would not have included the phrase “in the Spirit” if John the Evangelist had meant the human spirit. Pay attention: the human spirit. We might say that a person worships God with his own spirit—that he worships spiritually, with his own human spirit—and also in truth. That would not be wrong or un-Orthodox, but it would remain, so to speak, on the human level. It is not the correct and deeper interpretation of this passage. John Chrysostom already gives the same interpretation that Saint Cyril presents here.
I repeat: if Saint Cyril did not understand this to mean the Holy Spirit, he would not have used this passage. He takes it as his first quotation. It is beautiful—truly beautiful. Pay close attention, because there is profound theology here. “I worship the Father in Spirit and in truth.” This means: I worship the Father in the Holy Spirit, because I cannot worship the Father unless I have the Spirit of God. Thus, I worship the Father in the Holy Spirit. But I cannot worship the Father unless this also takes place “in truth.” The expression is in the dative; that is, with the Truth. And what is this Truth? It does not mean Orthodoxy here.
Do you know who the Truth is? It is Christ. Christ said, “I am the Truth.” Therefore, if we were to translate the passage fully, we would render it this way: the Father is worshiped in the Holy Spirit and in Christ Jesus. And that is indeed what it means. Listen to the harmony of Holy Scripture. No one, it says, comes to the Father except through Jesus Christ. Therefore, not only can you not worship the Father; you cannot even approach Him except through Jesus Christ. Thus, Christ is called the Truth here. The meaning is hidden within the passage. How many such hidden treasures there are in Holy Scripture!
They make those who walk upon its surface attentive, so that they may perceive what lies hidden beneath it. Therefore, I cannot worship the Father unless I believe in Jesus Christ. It is impossible, because John the Evangelist says, “He who does not have the Son does not have the Father either.” He says it with absolute clarity. So I cannot reach the Father unless I pass through the Son. That is why the Son is also called the Way: “I am the Way.” Here, “the Way” means the means by which we come to the Father. And do you know what this Way is? The Apostle Paul tells us in the Epistle to the Hebrews that the Son inaugurated “a new and living way.” What is this new way?
“A new way”—a new, fresh, living way—“that is, through His flesh.” His flesh is His human nature. Do you see? I cannot go to the Father unless I accept the incarnation of the Son.
Do you see? Then comes “in the Holy Spirit.” What does this mean? I cannot approach either the Father or the Son unless I have the Spirit of God. What does the Apostle Paul say? “No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.” No one can confess the Son...
No one can confess Jesus Christ as the Son of God and as God—as Lord, for “Lord” here means God—except by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, I cannot approach the Father or worship Him except “in Spirit and in truth.” This is the correct and deeper interpretation of the passage. Let us continue. “And again: But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God.” What does it mean when Christ says, “If I cast out demons by the Spirit of God”? It means that the Holy Spirit worked together with Christ in His miracles, among which was the driving out and expulsion of demons.
Thus, the Holy Spirit is always with Jesus Christ. Do you see? I mean with Christ’s human nature, because in the divine nature the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are inseparable and are one essence. Do you remember what I told you when we were again speaking about the Holy Spirit? The Holy Trinity appeared to Abraham: one Angel remained with Abraham, while the other two went down to Sodom. This is a type of the Son and the Holy Spirit, who descend into the world and are together. I will not repeat all of that now, of course. Remember, we have discussed it before. So here we see that the Holy Spirit works together with Christ in the miracles. Please hold on to this point. Now see what follows!
Here is the consequence: “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks a word against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.”
“Neither in this age nor in the age to come.” The Lord also said that whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit has no forgiveness. Now I know—as every spiritual father knows—that next Monday quite a few people will come to me and say...
And some others will go to other spiritual fathers and say, “Father, it seems that I have blasphemed against the Holy Spirit, and so I cannot be saved.” This thought clings to a person’s mind like a leech. Cast it away; that is not what the passage means. Please cast it away, so that you do not suffer. Do you understand? Whenever people read this passage themselves in Holy Scripture or hear it in a homily, it clings to them like a leech. They think they have blasphemed against the Holy Spirit, become troubled, and despair that they can no longer be saved. That is not what it means. Listen to what it does mean. The Lord says that whoever blasphemes against the Son may be forgiven, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit is not forgiven.
What does this refer to? It is true that blasphemy is not limited to the profanities heard in the marketplace. Forgive me, but they are also heard in drawing rooms, although we imagine they are found only in marketplaces and on street corners. They are heard in drawing rooms, homes, bedrooms—everywhere men and women blaspheme sacred things. Yes, women too. Modern women can be worse than men. If you want a small example, stand outside a school or high school when the girls and boys are dismissed, and hear how the girls speak and blaspheme. Go and listen; we have high schools nearby. Take a sample. Do you remember? I have heard it with my own ears. Pay attention to what they say. They sound worse than boys—like coarse coachmen of old. Indeed, in saying that, we are even insulting the coachman’s trade.
But that is not the blasphemy meant here. It is blasphemy of the kind found in Kazantzakis and among atheists: denying that Jesus Christ is God who became man. This, the Lord says, can be forgiven. Arius taught such things, yet Arius could have been forgiven before he died. Without question, he could have been forgiven. What does this mean? People saw Christ’s human nature, and their minds could not comprehend that God had become man. They could not grasp it. For their minds to receive it, they would have had to study the Old Testament, so that the prophets might assure them that Yahweh, the Lord, truly, truly became man. Otherwise, their difficulty is quite understandable. The human mind cannot contain this mystery and so...
It rejects it. But the person who repents of such error and unbelief, the Lord says, is forgiven. The one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, however, is not forgiven. Why is it specifically blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, and what form does it take? The key is this: the emphasis falls on the fact that God performed His miracles in the Holy Spirit. Remember when the Lord spoke these words. He had healed a man possessed by a demon, and the Jewish rulers said, “He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.” In other words, they claimed that He had the devil as His helper and fellow worker, and that this was how He drove out demons.
The Lord, of course, also gave them a proof. He said, “If I cast out demons by the ruler of the demons, then Satan’s kingdom—his dominion—has reached its end.” For if the devil casts out the devil, it is like a country falling into civil war and being dissolved. Nothing else would be needed: if demons turn against demons, the devil has already set himself on the path to self-destruction. That is absurd—utterly absurd. This was the proof He gave. But immediately afterward the Lord says that such blasphemy “will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” Where does the blasphemy lie? It lies in what they were capable of doing. Pay close attention, so that you may understand what blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is.
They confuse the sources. The source of Christ’s miracles was the Holy Spirit. What is the source of spiritualism, which produces wonders and signs? The devil. When you confuse these sources willingly and deliberately, knowing that you are confusing them—I stress this: knowing that you are confusing them—simply to achieve a certain end, which I shall explain shortly, then this, the Lord says, has no forgiveness. For you are saying that the Holy Spirit is the devil. It is a dreadful thing. A dreadful thing.
Someone might confuse a spiritualistic phenomenon with something that is truly a miracle of God. At times we may not exactly confuse them, but we may have doubts. We may ask, “Is this from God or not? Could the devil be producing it?” That is perfectly natural. I myself would advise you to be cautious and say, “Let us not rush to accept it.” Sometimes the devil also produces such things.
Is that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? No. Then what is it? Suppose that, perhaps through excessive caution, we called a miracle of God a spiritualistic phenomenon, but did so with a good intention, simply because we were overly cautious. Would I then be blaspheming against the Holy Spirit? No. Then what is this blasphemy?
My dear friends, the Jewish rulers knew very well who Jesus was.
They could have accepted Jesus and His miracles. But, as John the Evangelist says, “They handed Him over out of envy.” What does this mean? They felt that they were losing their prestige and their authority over the people, because Jesus had now become the central figure of the day and the people were following Him—God Himself. So they had to slander Him. This was a deliberate and fully conscious confusion of the sources: knowing that something came from God and yet...
Did not the other people say, “Never since the world began have we seen the eyes of the blind opened”? Those people did say it; they did. But the rulers said, “No, I will consciously distort the truth.” To give you a clearer picture—I often use this example—when the soldiers went to the Jewish rulers and told them that Christ, that Jesus, had risen, the rulers heard the news. The soldiers told them about the earthquake; they were terrified. What did the rulers do? They gave them money to say that things had happened differently. What were they doing? They were distorting the truth. They were twisting the facts, claiming that He had not risen.
“The disciples stole Him away during the night.” Could they perhaps have repented a little later? I mean the rulers who fabricated this lie about the theft, this theory that the body was stolen—a theory which, as the Evangelist notes, has continued to this day. And I would say, even to this day, in 1988—not merely until the time when the Gospel was written, whether by John the Evangelist or whoever, but right down to the present day this theory still exists. There are still those who want to defend it. What does this mean? These men wanted to make Jesus disappear because they wanted to preserve their own position. And when Pentecost came and they saw the wonders of the Holy Spirit, then...
They believed. Those who did not think as the rulers did believed. Five thousand people believed in Christ. But did the rulers who thought this way believe? No. On the contrary, they put the Apostles in prison, as you remember from the Acts of the Apostles that we are studying; and after beating them, they ordered them not to preach in this name. Why? Because they did not want to; because it was not in their interest. Their position served their own interests—it was something deliberately contrived. This is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. It has many dimensions, and one of them is refusal to repent. You may say, “But that is exactly what you have been telling us all this time.” Yes, it is the same thing. But let me put it to you...
Precisely. You come and ask, “Could I have blasphemed?” No, you have not. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is refusal to repent: when you depart from this present world without having repented, or because you refuse to repent. Now do not say to me—as some lady may say—“My husband does not want to repent.” Wait. If he dies and departs unrepentant, then we can say that. But we cannot say it now. How many people have repented and gone on to become radiant, remarkable people—surpassing many who had repented years before them! So we cannot make such a judgment lightly. Thank you. What, then, is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? It is remaining unrepentant. This is what the Fathers say, and it is the same point we made earlier. What did I tell you? What did the rulers do?
They remained unrepentant; and not only were they unrepentant, but they persisted in distorting the truth. That is the terrible thing. And to finish this section, let me tell you something else. Holy Scripture does indeed say this, in Matthew 12:31–32: “It will not be forgiven him”—the Lord Himself affirmed it—“either in this age,” meaning in this present life, “or in the age to come.” This raises a question: could someone, then, be forgiven in the age to come? There is a small opening through which forgiveness may be possible. I will not say much more, except this: if this sin is said not to be forgiven in the age to come, it follows that someone who has not committed this blasphemy may be forgiven in the age to come. That conclusion follows quite naturally...
It follows naturally. This is the reason for the memorial services we offer: perhaps, if God wills, He may justify someone—someone who had no time to receive Holy Communion, or to do this or that, or who had only minor sins. But this rests with God alone. That is why our Church offers memorial services for the departed. May the Lord bless you.

Είναι ο αληθινός Νώε ο Ιησούς Χριστός. Γιατί λέγει «αληθινός»;
Υπήρχε αυτή η περίπτωση; Το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, όταν κατήλθε και κατέρχεται στους ανθρώπους, τους αγιάζει, τους καθαρίζει. Αλλά όταν κατήλθε στον Ιησούν, δεν κατήλθε για να καθαρίσει. Το λέει εδώ πολύ σαφώς ο Άγιος Κύριλος. «Ἡ νοητὴ περιστερὰ ἐν καιρῷ τοῦ βαπτίσματος». Δηλαδή κατήλθεν. Κατήλθε, τι είναι; «Ἵνα δείξῃ ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν», για να δείξει ότι αυτός είναι. Ποιος; Ο Ιησούς. «Ὁ διὰ ξύλου σταυροῦ σώζων τοὺς πιστεύοντας». Αυτός που σώζει με το ξύλο του Σταυρού εκείνους οι οποίοι θα πίστευαν εις Αυτόν. Και μάλιστα «ὁ μέλλων πρὸς ἑσπέραν διὰ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ χαρίζεσθαι τὴν σωτηρίαν». Τι εννοεί αυτό;
Να έρθει το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, διότι αν δεν πιστέψεις εσύ στον Χριστό, το Πνεύμα το Άγιο δεν έρχεται. Και η πρώτη πράξις πίστεως είναι να βαπτιστείς, δηλαδή να αποδεχτείς εκείνο που λέει ο Χριστός. Το απεδέχθης, σώθηκες. Μόνο αυτό το σημείο πήρα από αυτό το χωρίο του Κυρίου, δεν παίρνω τίποτα άλλο, γιατί σας είπα, αν έπρεπε να μένω με κάθε χωρίο και να λέμε πολλά, δεν τελειώναμε ποτέ. «Καὶ παρὰ τοῦ Πατρός· πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὁ Πατὴρ ὁ ἐξ οὐρανοῦ δώσει Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον τοῖς αἰτοῦσιν αὐτόν». Άλλο χωρίο είναι, από τον Λουκά 11,13. Δεν λέω ενδέκατον για λόγους οικονομίας χρόνου. 11,13. Εδώ τι;
Να κάνει προσεκτικούς εκείνους που περπατάνε πάνω στο έδαφός της και να αντιληφθούν τι κρύπτεται εις το υπέδαφός της. Έτσι λοιπόν δεν μπορώ να προσκυνήσω τον Πατέρα εάν δεν πιστέψω, δηλαδή, εις τον Ιησού Χριστόν. Δεν γίνεται, διότι λέει ο Ευαγγελιστής Ιωάννης: «Εκείνος που δεν έχει τον Υιόν, ούτε τον Πατέρα έχει». Το λέει σαφέστατα. Άρα λοιπόν δεν φτάνω στον Πατέρα εάν δεν περάσω διά του Υιού. Γι’ αυτό ο Υιός λέγεται και Οδός. «Εγώ είμαι η Οδός». Και όταν λέγει Οδός, σημαίνει ο τρόπος. Και ποια είναι αυτή η Οδός, ξέρετε; Το λέει στην προς Εβραίους ο Απόστολος Παύλος, ότι ενεκαίνισε ο Υιός «ὁδὸν πρόσφατον». Ποια είναι αυτή η πρόσφατη;
Είναι αυτό; Όχι. Τι είναι τότε; Κι αν μάλιστα, από μία ίσως υπερβολική προσοχή μας, ένα θαύμα του Θεού είπαμε ότι είναι πνευματιστικό φαινόμενο, με αγαθήν προαίρεσην εννοείται, από υπερβολική, θα έλεγα, προσοχή μας, μήπως τότε βλασφημώ κατά του Αγίου Πνεύματος; Όχι. Τότε τι;
Ακριβώς. Λέμε, έρχεστε και λέτε: «Μήπως εβλασφήμησα;» Όχι, δεν εβλασφήμησες. Βλασφημία κατά του Αγίου Πνεύματος είναι η αμετανοησία, όταν φεύγεις από τον παρόντα κόσμο και δεν έχεις μετανοήσει ή δεν θες να μετανοήσεις. Μη μου πείτε — κάποια κυρία θα μου πει: «Ο σύζυγός μου δεν θέλει να μετανοήσει». Περιμένετε. Άμα πεθάνει και φύγει αμετανόητος, τότε θα το πούμε αυτό. Αυτό. Τώρα όμως δεν μπορούμε να το πούμε αυτό. Πόσοι είναι εκείνοι που μετενόησαν και μάλιστα έγιναν λαμπροί άνθρωποι, λαμπροί άνθρωποι, σπουδαίοι άνθρωποι έγιναν και ξεπέρασαν πολλούς που είχαν προ πολλών ετών μετανοήσει. Δεν μπορούμε, λοιπόν, εύκολα να το πούμε. Ευχαριστούμε. Συνεπώς, τι είναι; Το αμετανόητον είναι βλασφημία κατά του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Αυτό λέγουν οι Πατέρες και είναι το προηγούμενο. Τι σας είπα; Οι άρχοντες τι έκαναν;
