Summary

Saint Cyril teaches that the Holy Spirit sanctifies lawful Christian marriage and the family when they remain faithful to God and the Church. John the Baptist is sanctified from his mother’s womb to baptize Christ and proclaim the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire. Noah’s dove is interpreted as a type of the Holy Spirit, who finds rest among those prepared through faith in Jesus Christ.

We are still in the book of the catechetical lectures of Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, in the seventeenth catechesis, paragraph seven—page 219, for those who have the book. “This Holy Spirit worked in Elizabeth; for He knows not only virgins, but also those who are married, provided the marriage is lawful.” This Holy Spirit, he says, worked not only in the Theotokos, but also in Elizabeth, for He does not know and visit virgins alone, but married people as well, provided, Saint Cyril says, that the marriage is according to the law—that is, lawful. We examined this passage last time. I have repeated it because it begins the paragraph and connects us with what follows. And I told you, if you remember, that by a lawful marriage we do not mean a civil marriage, because a civil marriage is not a lawful marriage according to God; it is fornication, one hundred percent fornication. Indeed, if you are invited to a civil wedding, you must not go—I say this expressly and categorically—because you are placing a crown

—a wedding crown—upon sin, upon fornication. You must not even send a gift, though the person may be your closest relative. Pay close attention to this. What concerns us is not what the state does, but what the Church says. I say this plainly. As John Chrysostom puts it so beautifully, pointedly, and boldly: when you depart from this world, you will not be judged according to the laws of the state, but according to the law of God. I believe this is a very important argument. Therefore, we shall not honor civil marriage

or approve of it, for the simple reason that it is fornication and therefore sin. A marriage that begins in this way is not lawful. Nor is one that begins with premarital relations, which are so widely encouraged in our time, as we said last time. These young people have not even gone to Holy Confession, yet they approach the Mystery of Holy Matrimony and begin a family under such conditions. How can the Spirit of God come and rest within the space of their family? Do you know why I say “space”? It is not merely a figure of speech. When the

procession, or dance, of the newlyweds takes place, the priest goes first, the newlyweds follow, and the sponsors come behind them. They make three circuits around the small table, which, as I have told you before, stands in place of the Holy Table. The wine likewise stands in place of Holy Communion. This is because the Mystery of Holy Matrimony was once celebrated during the Divine Liturgy. One surviving remnant of this is that the Mystery begins with the words, “Blessed is the Kingdom.” But the Divine Liturgy also begins with “Blessed is the Kingdom.” This surviving remnant proves that the Mystery was once incorporated into it.

The Mystery of Holy Matrimony was incorporated into the Divine Liturgy. So it is, my dear friends. During the procession—although today the wine has acquired a different meaning, whereas formerly, as I told you, it was the Holy Eucharist—and as the procession circles that little table, taking the forms that have come down to us, a sacred space is marked out. In exactly the same way, at the consecration of a church, we make three processions around it with holy relics and the Gospel, with the bishop and the others; and by these three processions around the church, the sacred space is marked out.

Thank you. We then say that the church has been consecrated. We cannot do anything shameful there, because the space is sacred. The space of marriage is also sacred. I would like you to understand that even those laws which speak of the inviolability of the family home, and such things, are right to do so. They are right. Where does this principle begin? It begins with the Mystery of Holy Matrimony, for the Church was the first to draw this sacred boundary, within which no third person may enter apart from the husband and wife.

The sacred space of marriage. Do you hear? This is very important. And this is so when the marriage is lawful, when marriage is not merely fornication dressed up to look respectable. The wife is not reduced to a concubine, nor are the purposes of marriage disregarded, turning marriage into whatever we please and giving ourselves license within it to engage freely in various perversions. If that is how things stand, I ask you: how can the Holy Spirit rest there?

If the Holy Spirit does not rest in such defiled places, are the spouses then left without the Holy Spirit? Certainly. From this comes all the misery that follows: divorces, quarrels, disagreements, and all those evils. Shall I say more? If the space has been profaned, what will become of the children who live there? Somewhere the Apostle Paul says—and what he says is quite sufficient for the matter—that if the husband or the wife has not yet come to the true faith

—and he is speaking here of faith, not marital faithfulness, but faith in Christ—because at that time, while the Gospel was being preached, it was not always the case that both spouses would come to believe. One might believe while the other did not. And then, says the Apostle Paul, the children are holy within a home sanctified through marriage according to God. As I told you, that was a different situation; those were the circumstances then. Yet he speaks—and this is the point I wish to take—of holy children: that the children may be holy. What does “holy” mean? Set apart from the world and from sin. But if the space in which the children are born and raised is profaned, is it ever possible

for our children to grow up properly in such a profane place? I have expanded a little on what I told you last time, and now we move on to our new subject. “And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied.” And the good servant said of her own Lady: “But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” For Elizabeth counted herself blessed. Here, my dear friends, we come to something exceedingly interesting and exceedingly important.

Elizabeth was filled—filled to overflowing—with the Holy Spirit, and she prophesied. And what did she say? “Why has this been granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should visit me?” How profound this is. From where did Elizabeth have the Holy Spirit? Of course, the righteous of the Old Testament had the Holy Spirit. The Evangelist Luke tells us that Elizabeth and Zechariah were righteous and blameless. Therefore, they had the Spirit of God. But from where did Elizabeth receive the spirit of prophecy, which the Holy Spirit bestows? She received it through John—John, whom she still bore within her womb. For John was filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb. A little later we shall see why John was filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb. We shall see that shortly. But what happens here? Here she receives from her son’s prophetic gift. He permits it and wills it; this is what he desires. In other words, this is a confession of faith. The mother receives this gift and speaks that great saying. If we attend to it, my dear friends, we shall be astonished; you will see what prophecy truly means. She speaks to the Most Holy Theotokos, to Mary, who was her relative and who at that time was about fourteen or fifteen years old

—she conceived God the Word (Logos) at fourteen or fifteen—while Elizabeth was advanced in years, beyond the age of childbearing, and had been barren. She was Mary’s relative, perhaps even her first cousin; at any rate, they were related. And now this elderly woman, the older relative, says, “Why has this been granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should visit me?” Behold the great prophecy. She calls that infant, that embryo in the womb of her relative Mary, “Lord”—her own Lord. Do you see the prophecy?

Here Saint Cyril says that “Elizabeth counted herself blessed,” and rightly so, because Elizabeth had received a great honor. It is what we often say to an eminent person: “I had the honor of receiving your visit,” or, “Thank you very much for granting me the honor of welcoming you.” This is what Elizabeth meant here: “I have been honored.” Thus she counts herself blessed. “I had the honor of being visited by the mother of my Lord.” Oh, what a great thing this is, my dear friends—what a great thing! But let us continue. “Filled with this same Holy Spirit

Zechariah also, the father of John, prophesied, declaring what blessings his only-begotten son would bring about, and that John, through baptism, would be the Forerunner of Christ.” The same Holy Spirit comes upon John’s father, Zechariah, and he receives the Spirit of God. And what does he prophesy about his only-begotten son, John? He prophesies all the blessings John himself would bring about. For John did become the bearer of blessings: he stood as the Forerunner of the Lord, pointed out the Lord, and declared who the incarnate Son of God is.

He preached repentance, and the people received the baptism of repentance; he opened the roads and pathways of their hearts so that they might receive the Messiah. Thus you see that John truly became the bearer of blessings. His father prophesied this. It would be very worthwhile to recite his canticle now, though Saint Cyril himself does not quote it. The Canticle of Zechariah is recorded in the New Testament. It is a most important canticle. Indeed, all these righteous people—such as Simeon

—of whom we shall speak shortly—and Anna the prophetess, who was there in the Temple: all of them, because they had the Spirit of God, correctly understood what concerned the Messiah.

They understood it correctly. For them, the Messiah was not only the expectation of the nations and the glory of Israel. Read the Canticle of Zechariah, and you will see this. Pay attention: He was the expectation of the nations and the glory of Israel. What does this mean? He was the Messiah of every people, of the whole earth, of all humanity.

This is something the Jews never accepted. Even to this day, they have never accepted it.

That is why they persecuted the disciples, and why they also persecuted the Apostle Paul. I have probably told you this on other occasions, but no matter; it is useful for you to hear again that the Jewish interpretation was mistaken. When the Apostle Paul was being lynched in the Temple courts, where he had come to worship, they recognized him because they had heard of his activity and wanted to kill him. They seized him and began beating him to death. Lysias the commander barely managed to rescue him. Paul then asked Lysias for permission to address the crowd, and Lysias granted it. Paul went up several steps and spoke to the people from there. He addressed them in Hebrew—or, more precisely, in Aramaic.

They listened to him. He told them his story and spoke to them about Jesus Christ. The crowd listened without causing an uproar. But the moment he reached the point where Jesus had sent him to preach to the nations, they became frenzied. They tore their garments, flung them into the air, threw dust into the air, and shouted to Lysias to kill Paul. Why did they become so frenzied? They wanted the Messiah for themselves. How many times have I told you this? By now, I believe, you will have fully understood it. The Messiah is the expectation of every people, every nation, every age and era. And as for those who lived before Christ—yes, He went and found them in Hades. Do you hear? He went and found them in Hades. During the three days—thirty-three hours, as we say—that Christ remained in Hades, what did He do? He carried out precisely this work. This was His work in Hades. Therefore, He is the Redeemer of all ages, all times, and all generations: those before Christ, those who lived during His earthly life, and those after Christ. Certainly. When Jacob, the Patriarch Jacob, was in Egypt prophesying about his son Judah, from whom the Messiah would descend

He said what he had to say, and he remembered. What did he say? “Your descendant, the expectation of the nations.” So the Jews failed to see these things. The rabbis, those who interpreted the Law, saw them, yet did not see them. This is the terrible thing, the tragedy of that people. Yes, because they placed their national concerns above the salvation of their souls. Take heed. Did you hear that? I say it so that we too may hear it, because no matter how important our national concerns may be, we cannot place them above the Church and salvation. Otherwise, we shall suffer—or are already suffering—what ancient Israel suffered and, sadly, continues to suffer to this day. Yes, to this day. I would say that perhaps they might have accepted the Messiah. Perhaps. Perhaps, perhaps—even though Christ had disappointed them. He disappointed them because they had different ideas about the person of the Messiah. Perhaps they might have accepted Him after His Resurrection, and that people might finally have come to believe. That is what I mean by “perhaps.” But then, on top of the first blow—the collapse of their hopes concerning His person—came a second: how could this Messiah

also be proclaimed to the nations? This is why the Jews were jealous. Wherever the Apostle Paul went into the synagogues and preached Christ, those Jews who were well disposed believed. There were also proselytes who were not Jews but believed in the true God, and they too believed. Then the pagans outside the synagogue also began to believe. When the Jews in the synagogue saw this, those who did not believe became jealous, because they wanted the Messiah for themselves, and they persecuted the Apostles. Zechariah gives the correct interpretation: the Messiah would be the Messiah of the nations. But since

our people, Israel, would give the Messiah to the world, our people would plainly have glory among the other nations. It is like us Greeks saying that we gave our language, in which the New Testament was written, or that we gave our philosophy and therefore hold a foremost place in human history. Or we say that we have a very beautiful and important language, or, in any case, a glorious history—for example, that through those battles with the Persians, as you know, we preserved the civilization of Europe. Those battles were decisive, because the spirit of the East did not prevail. Otherwise Greece would not have developed, and we would not have the civilization we know as Western civilization.

These are important things. Are they not a glory for Greece? In the same way, it would be the glory of Israel that the Messiah was born from within her people, that the Messiah came through her. Saint Cyril then continues: “Simeon the righteous was also instructed by this Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ; and when he received Him into his arms in the Temple, he bore clear witness concerning Him.” The same Holy Spirit came and enlightened Simeon. Indeed...

Before this happened, the Theotokos and Joseph had brought the infant Jesus, according to the Law, on the fortieth day—the familiar forty-day blessing—to offer their sacrifice and receive the blessing, both father and mother. Take note here: Simeon was certainly not a priest. We do not even know to which tribe he belonged. It is nowhere said that he was a priest or belonged to the tribe of Levi—nothing of the kind. He was simply a man, naturally descended from one of the tribes and living in Jerusalem. The Gospel according to Luke says that the Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death until his own eyes had seen the Lord’s Christ,

the One whom the Lord, God the Father, would appoint as Christ—that is, would anoint for the great work of humanity’s salvation. He would not see death before that. Holy Scripture does not tell us when this revelation came to him, whether some time or many years earlier. He was advanced in age; perhaps he kept growing older and older, just as Abraham grew older and older without seeing the promised child. Then, one day, the Spirit of God told him, “Rise and go to the Temple now—now.” At that very moment Jesus was being presented in the Temple. Simeon then took the infant Jesus into his arms and said:

He also blessed the Theotokos and Joseph; he blessed them both. He received the Lord’s Christ, saw Him, and said: “Lord, now let Your servant depart.” Let me depart now; grant that I may die. “Now, now let Your servant depart in peace, Lord, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all peoples: a light of revelation to the nations and the glory of Your people Israel.” Ah! Simeon too declared that He is the light of the nations. This is what it means to possess the Holy Spirit. Take heed: there is harmony! Take heed—I shall say it once again: harmony. Why?

Because behind the prophets, behind the righteous, behind the Saints, there is One: the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. There can be no contradiction. On a previous occasion I spoke to you about this harmony among the Fathers of our Church. It exists because they all possessed the Holy Spirit. This is a great thing. And here Saint Cyril says: “Receiving Him into his arms in the Temple, he bore clear witness concerning Him.” Simeon bore clear witness concerning the infant Jesus. And now we come to paragraph eight: “John also, filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb, was sanctified for this purpose.”

“He was sanctified to baptize the Lord, not as one who gives the Spirit, but as one who proclaims the glad tidings of Him who gives the Spirit.” John too received the same Holy Spirit, and, Saint Cyril says, he received Him from his mother’s womb.

“For this purpose he was sanctified.” He had to be sanctified. How could he have been sanctified without receiving the Holy Spirit? And why did he have to be sanctified through receiving the Holy Spirit? So that he might be the proper person to baptize the Lord.

We shall see why; this is the reason. For He too had to observe

Baptism—Christ did so not, of course, as a Baptism of metanoia for Himself, but as the One who fulfilled the Law. Whatever God commanded, He had to accept, including Baptism. And who could have placed his hand upon that divine head? That is what “summit” means here: the head—the divine head. Besides, was it not John who said, “Am I to baptize You?” The Spirit of God revealed to him who Jesus was. “I need to be baptized by You.” And yet John had been sanctified from his mother’s womb. The Lord told him, “Let it be so now; do what must be done.” And John yielded, because he had humility.

He did not persist as the Apostle Peter persisted: “You will wash my feet? Never, never, never!” And the Lord said to him, “If I do not wash your feet, you have no share in My Kingdom.” John was “not one who gives the Spirit, but one who proclaims the glad tidings of Him who gives the Spirit.” John was Spirit-bearing, but he would not give the Spirit—certainly not to Jesus, God forbid, nor to anyone else. Rather, he possessed the Spirit of God so that he might proclaim the One who would give the Spirit of God, namely Jesus Christ. For, of course, he said:

“I indeed baptize you in water unto metanoia, but He who comes after me,” and so forth, “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” John was saying, “I baptize you in the water of metanoia. He will come and baptize you with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit”—the Holy Spirit and fire. The proclamation and baptism of John are therefore clearly distinct from the proclamation and Baptism of the Lord. If you asked what the difference is, you can see it here. I believe you know that John baptized with a baptism of metanoia, not with the forgiveness of sins. Take careful note of this, because many might think that John’s baptism also granted remission of sins. No. It was a baptism of metanoia, a seal of metanoia and return to God. Christian Baptism, however, is the Baptism of forgiveness for all personal sins and ancestral sin, and at the same time it opens the way for the baptized person to receive the Holy Spirit. The distinction between these two baptisms is clear. Saint Cyril then says, “with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Why fire, Saint Cyril asks? Why does he mention fire? It means with fire: a Baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire, because the descent of the Holy Spirit took place in tongues of fire.

The descent of the Holy Spirit, he says, took place in the form of fiery tongues. Precisely so—like fiery tongues, like fiery tongues. The Holy Spirit is not, of course, fire. God is fire, but this was not something visible in itself. For that reason, in this instance the Book of Acts says “as of fire” when recounting Pentecost. In the same way, it says “as a dove.” The Holy Spirit is not a dove, but appeared to John’s eyes like a dove. And so forth. Nor is He water, though He may be manifested as water.

So Saint Cyril asks why John said, “with the Holy Spirit and fire.” It was to show that the descent of the Holy Spirit would be like fiery tongues, or in fiery tongues—as fire. “Concerning this,” he says, “the Lord rejoiced and declared, ‘I came to cast fire upon the earth, and what more do I desire if it is already kindled?’” Saint Cyril tells us that this is what the Lord said with joy: “I came to set fire upon the earth, and what more do I desire if this fire has been kindled?” It has been kindled—what more do I desire?

This saying of the Lord—“I came to cast fire upon the earth”—has many meanings. “I came to cast fire,” just as He says, “I came to bring a sword and to divide people.” Who, Lord? You, the Peacemaker, came to bring a sword upon the earth and cause division? The Lord does not divide. The expression means that those who, through an evil exercise of their free will and the activity of demons, refused to accept the Gospel would themselves take up the sword. The Lord did not bring a sword there.

It is a figure of speech. He says, “I came to cast fire.” What is this fire? It is also faith. It is the fire of faith, and this is very important—the fire of faith. “And what more do I desire,” He says, “once this fire has been set upon the earth, once it has been kindled?” It is like someone setting a fire—an arsonist taking a piece of tow soaked in oil, let us say, and lighting it. So too here: what more do I desire, now that this fire has been kindled? And where is this faith found? In faith in His own person. We might say that the twelve Apostles believed. “I have set the fire upon the earth. What else do I desire? What more do I desire?” Yet the fire that

Christ cast upon the earth is also, as we have seen here in Saint Cyril, the Holy Spirit. He came to bring the Holy Spirit. And if the Holy Spirit found rest in hearts that believed in the person of Christ, then Christ says, “What more do I desire?” For do not forget that the Son became incarnate so that the Holy Spirit might come upon the earth. He came down, then ascended, so that the Holy Spirit might be sent down. This is what is meant by the words, “Having ascended on high, He led captivity captive,” and so forth.

All these things belong together. Christ ascends, and the Spirit of God descends to bring His justification and His gifts—His salvation and His gifts. Thus the Son comes, descends, and ascends, so that the Spirit of God may descend and remain with us forever. This, then, is what the saying means: “I came to cast the fire of the Holy Spirit upon the earth.” If the Holy Spirit has now found a place in which to remain, what more do I desire? And that place was His disciples and the one hundred and twenty people who received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Saint Cyril will tell us further on—I do not know whether we shall reach it today, if time permits—he will tell us that...

Noah’s dove—Noah’s dove—is, of course, a type of the Holy Spirit. But since it is relevant here, allow me to tell you this, because Saint Cyril says something else there. Pay attention. When Noah wanted to know whether dry land had finally appeared—and do not find this strange; it was not easy for him to determine, though I will not go into the reasons—he sent a dove out through a small opening. He took a dove and released it through that opening. The first time, the dove...

—this happened twice—the first time the dove went out, it found no place to rest. Where could it alight? There was water everywhere. So the dove returned. Noah sent it out again, and then it found dry land; the trees had even appeared, and it returned, Scripture says, with an olive branch in its beak. Do you suppose all this is without typological meaning? What does it mean? The Holy Spirit, represented by the dove, returns because He found no place to remain. If people had not believed in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit would not have found...

...rest upon the earth—a place of repose. That is what ‘rest’ means here: repose. And what would He have done? He would have returned. In other words, properly speaking, the Holy Spirit had found no place of rest on earth where He could manifest Himself fully. Christ came and established the necessary conditions; then the Spirit of God came, just as the dove now returned bearing the olive branch. But let us continue. Paragraph nine: ‘This Holy Spirit descended when the Lord was baptized, so that the dignity of the One being baptized might not pass unnoticed, as John says.’

‘But He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.”’

Here Saint Cyril says that the Spirit descended while the Lord was being baptized, ‘so that the dignity of the One being baptized might not pass unnoticed’—so that the event would not be overlooked or pass unnoticed. Which event? The revelation of the dignity of the One being baptized. Who was being baptized? The Lord Jesus. Why, then, did the Holy Spirit come? To reveal the dignity of the One being baptized. A little further on, as it says here, ‘like a dove, coming upon Him’—we shall see this immediately below. But let me tell you now: why did the Holy Spirit come?

As we said, He came to point out the Lord, so that the person of the Lord being baptized would not pass unnoticed. Did the Holy Spirit perhaps come to cleanse Him and fill Him, so that Jesus might become full of the Holy Spirit—that is, to give Him the Holy Spirit? Is that why the Holy Spirit descended? By no means! Do not forget that the Holy Spirit cleansed the Theotokos so that the conception might take place, as we said last time. The Holy Spirit cleansed her to make her ready to receive. Why? Because the Word is holy, and in taking flesh—whose flesh? That of the Most Holy Theotokos—He had to receive it from pure ground. Therefore...

...the Spirit of God cleansed the Theotokos, and consequently the human nature assumed by Christ was made divine. I told you this last time. Did the Lord, then, have need of the Holy Spirit? By no means! He had no need of the Holy Spirit. Someone may point to Christ’s words, ‘I work miracles by the finger of God.’ Do you know what the Holy Spirit is called? One of His names is ‘the finger of God’—the finger. ‘By the finger of God.’ Or again, there is the statement: ‘If I work miracles...’

‘...by the Holy Spirit, and whoever refuses to accept them and speaks against My miracles blasphemes against the Holy Spirit and will not be forgiven.’ You might then say, ‘See, it is the Holy Spirit who comes to perform the miracles,’ and so on, and that He is the finger of God—the finger of Christ, of God in Christ. By no means! No, no, no. The Holy Spirit descends and works together with the Son. He does not come to illumine and fill—even the human nature of Jesus—but the Holy Spirit comes to work together with Him. And as for the phrase ‘the finger of God,’ which one of the Evangelists uses somewhere—I cannot remember at this moment...

‘...by the finger of God.’ See how beautiful this is. Why did the Spirit appear as a dove at the Baptism? The Father told John that he would recognize the Messiah by the Holy Spirit coming like a dove. What does the dove do here? The dove does not make Christ divine; it points Him out. And since it points to Christ, it can only be a finger. How do we point? We point with a finger. Who, then, is the finger of God? The Holy Spirit. The Father sends the Holy Spirit to show mankind that this is His Son, so that the dignity of His person may not pass unnoticed.

See what the Gospel says a little further on: ‘Behold, the heavens were opened.’ The Gospel tells us that the heavens were opened. In the Gospel according to Mark, it says, ‘He saw the heavens torn open,’ using a vivid image and a verb that conveys force—the heavens being torn apart. It uses this same powerful verb. ‘They were opened because of the dignity of the One who descended.’ Why were the heavens opened? This was a moment of the greatest importance. Heaven had been closed; now it opens through Jesus Christ.

Heaven had been closed because Paradise was shut and our first parents were driven out. Now heaven is open so that man may ascend, God may descend, and man may rise to heaven. Heaven also opens to reveal its mysteries, and so on. The opening of the heavens has many meanings; it is a profoundly significant event. Here Saint Cyril takes up one of them. Why were they opened? ‘Because of the dignity of the One who descended’—so that the dignity of the One who came down might be revealed. Who came down? The Son, of course, and the Holy Spirit had to point Him out. The heavens open and the Spirit of God descends. Now, how are we to picture this opening of the heavens? How did it appear before John’s eyes? We do not understand. How could we understand it? What was this opening? It was a vision, just as Stephen saw the Lord in heaven at the right hand of the glory of God the Father. This happened to honor the Son. It was the Son who came down. Yet, if you will, the Holy Spirit also descended. Therefore, when Saint Cyril says, ‘because of the dignity of the One who descended,’ we could apply this equally to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. For what could be worthy and equal in dignity to present Jesus to the world...

...and bear witness to Him? ‘For behold,’ he says, ‘the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him.’ The Spirit came upon Him—upon Jesus. If something is very high in the sky, at the zenith, one cannot say that it is directly over a particular person. I may say that I am beneath the moon, but so are you farther away, and someone else farther still. Over whom, then, is the moon? But if the moon came down to the height of my head, I could say that it had descended over me. Remember the star of the Nativity.

When a star is high in the middle of the sky, can anyone say that it is directly over my head and pointing to me? No; the star must descend. And it did descend. How low? ‘It stood over where the Child was,’ the holy Evangelist Matthew tells us. Notice: it stood over the house. How many houses might there have been in Bethlehem? Many. Even if there had been only two, which house would it indicate? This means that the star descended to the level of the house. In the same way, the Spirit of God appeared like a dove at the level of Jesus. It is clear. Do you see this? ‘The fact that it descended shows that it was self-moving.’

The descent was self-moved. What does that mean? It means that the Spirit of God is sent by the Father, yet at the same time He moves of Himself. Now, simple folk, forgive me: do not go home and say that the Holy Spirit is an automobile! For God’s sake, no! Let me ask you a question about the Greek word ‘aftokinito,’ which today means ‘automobile.’ Grammatically speaking, is it a noun or an adjective? You will tell me it is a noun. Wrong. It is an adjective.

It comes from the phrase ‘self-moving vehicle.’ We omit the word ‘vehicle,’ and the adjective remains: something that moves by itself. So the Greek word for ‘automobile’ was not originally a noun but an adjective. Perhaps this is the first time you have realized it. Do you know how many such examples we have—adjectives used as nouns? Take the Greek word for water, ‘nero.’ Originally it was not a noun but an adjective, from the phrase ‘fresh water.’ ‘Fresh’ meant living, newly drawn water, recently taken from the well. Fresh water. ‘Please bring me a glass of fresh water.’

The adjective ‘fresh’ remained by itself, without the word ‘water’: ‘Bring me a glass of fresh.’ Later, the Greek word for ‘fresh’ became the modern word for ‘water.’ Thus it took the place of a noun, although it is really an adjective used as a noun. So, for God’s sake, be careful, because I once had a dreadful experience. It happened during examinations in the army. I was trying to explain an electronic vacuum tube to a fellow soldier who knew nothing about electronics, and I wanted to explain the function of the grid inside the tube. I told him, ‘It is just like a traffic policeman who can control the entire flow of traffic with a single motion of his hands.’ ‘Do you understand?’ ‘I understand.’ Then came the written examination. And what did he write?

The poor fellow wrote, ‘The grid is the traffic policeman.’ The instructor read it and thought he was being mocked. He stormed into the classroom and said, ‘Were you making fun of me?’ ‘No, sir,’ the man replied. ‘Mytilinaios told me that.’ I said, ‘No, sir. I told him it was like a traffic policeman,’ and so on—not that the grid actually is a traffic policeman. So that I may not be misunderstood, since I have had this happen before: I nearly ended up in military prison. I nearly went to prison because the instructor was furious. I was terrified. That is why I am telling you...

...that when Saint Cyril says here ‘self-moving,’ he means that which moves of itself. Thus, when we say that the Holy Spirit is self-moving, it means that He moves of Himself; no one else moves Him. It is what Aristotle said—or rather, Plato said—about the ‘unmoved first mover.’ God, he says, remains unmoved and moves all things; He sets everything in motion while Himself remaining unmoved. When Saint Cyril says here that the Holy Spirit is self-moving, he means that no cause exists which sets the Holy Spirit in motion. And here we encounter this great and important truth: the Holy Spirit is indeed sent by the Father; He proceeds from the Father and is sent by the Father, yet at the same time He moves of Himself.

For if He were moved only by the Father—that is, if the Holy Spirit were moved by another—then He would be inferior to the Father. But the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are equal. They are distinct in person, yet equal: one Godhead. Thus He is sent and also moves of Himself. How both can be true, we do not understand. We know only that, if the Holy Spirit did not move of Himself, He would be moved by another. Then, as we would have said in the previous catechesis, the Holy Spirit is distinct, He sends, He is Lord, and so forth. Saint Cyril therefore says here, ‘The fact that He descended shows that He is self-moving.’ He descended...

...from the Father, yet He also descends of Himself. ‘For since...’

“For some have explained that the firstfruits and preeminence of the Holy Spirit among those who are baptized were granted to the humanity of the Savior by Him who bestows such grace.” What do we see here, beloved? We see that, as he says, some offer this explanation. What do they explain? That the Holy Spirit comes, for the sake of the Savior’s human nature, to grant the firstfruits and preeminence to those who will be baptized—to mankind.

Indeed, beloved, the Holy Spirit came to give us what he calls here “the firstfruits.” The Apostle Paul uses the word “firstfruits” somewhere in one of his epistles. He says—I think it is in the first chapter of Romans—that even we who have the firstfruits of the Holy Spirit groan and travail together with creation. What does it mean that we groan even though we have the firstfruits of the Holy Spirit? “Firstfruits” means exactly what the word says: something that marks the beginning, something that is the starting point. We have the firstfruits. When did these firstfruits first appear?

The firstfruits appeared in Jesus Christ, when the Holy Spirit descended because of Jesus Christ—or rather, on account of Jesus Christ, for our sake—and we receive the Holy Spirit through our Baptism. Through our Baptism, then, we receive the firstfruits, the beginning. Do you know what the firstfruits are? The Apostle Paul tells us: they are the pledge, the promise. The promise of what? Of the Kingdom to come. From the Spirit of God, then, we receive these firstfruits, this preeminence, this first beginning, and we too are called firstborn. Yet Jesus Christ is the Firstborn. We too are called firstborn; the Apocalypse (Book of Revelation) gives us this name. But since, my beloved, our time has passed...

God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Ιερός χώρος του γάμου. Το ακούτε; Πολύ σπουδαίο. Όταν ακόμα ο γάμος είναι νόμιμος, δεν είναι μια εύσχημος πορνεία ο γάμος, εύσχημος πορνεία. Ούτε η γυναίκα, η σύζυγος, μεταβάλλεται σε παλλακίδα, ούτε μέσα στον γάμο αγνοούνται βεβαίως οι σκοποί του γάμου, τον μεταβάλλουμε σε ό,τι τον μεταβάλλουμε, και εκεί με κάποια άνεση και ελευθερία να μετερχόμεθα τις ποικίλες διαστροφές. Αν έτσι έχουν τα πράγματα, πώς θα αναπαυθεί το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, ερωτώ;

— συνέλαβε τον Θεόν Λόγον 14 με 15 ετών — η Ελισάβετ ήτο γερασμένη, αφού πια δεν είχε τεκνογονία, ήταν στείρα, ήταν συγγενής, ίσως να ήταν πρώτες εξαδέλφες. Πάντως ήταν συγγενής. Και τώρα η γραία, η μεγάλη συγγενής, να λέει: «Πώς ήταν αυτό, να με επισκεφθεί η μητέρα του Κυρίου μου;» Να η μεγάλη προφητεία. Αποκαλεί Κύριον, Κύριόν της, εκείνο το βρέφος, εκείνο το έμβρυον που ήταν στα σπλάχνα της συγγενείας της, της Μαρίας. Είδατε προφητεία;

Εδώ το Πνεύμα, λέει, κατήλθε βαπτιζομένου του Κυρίου, «προς το μη λαθείν του βαπτιζομένου την αξίαν», για να μην παραθεωρηθεί, να μην περάσει απαρατήρητη η περίπτωση. Ποια περίπτωση; Της αξίας εκείνου που εβαπτίζετο. Ποιος εβαπτίζετο; Ο Κύριος εβαπτίζετο, ο Ιησούς. Ώστε λοιπόν το Πνεύμα το Άγιον γιατί ήλθε; Δια να δείξει την αξία εκείνου που εβαπτίζετο. Λίγο πιο κάτω, όπως λέει εδώ, «ως περιστερά και ερχόμενον επ’ αυτόν», λίγο πιο κάτω, το δούμε τώρα, ευθύς παρακάτω. Αλλά να σας το πω από τώρα: το Πνεύμα το Άγιον γιατί ήλθε;

Νεαρόν έμεινε σκέτο, χωρίς το ύδωρ. Φέρε μου ένα ποτήρι νεαρού. Και κατόπιν το νεαρόν έγινε νερόν. Και έτσι πήρε τη θέση του ουσιαστικού, ενώ δεν είναι παρά ένα ουσιαστικοποιημένο επίθετο. Έτσι λοιπόν, προς Θεού, προς Θεού, γιατί κάποτε έχω ένα φοβερό, μια φοβερή περίπτωση. Σε εξετάσεις ήτανε, και δη στο στρατό, που ήθελα να πω σε κάποιον συνάδελφο, δεν ήξερε ηλεκτρονικά, και του εξηγούσα την ηλεκτρονική λυχνία και ήθελα να του πω ποιο ρόλο παίζει το πλέγμα μες στη λυχνία. Και του είπα: «Όπως ακριβώς ένας χωροφύλακας της τροχαίας μπορεί να ρυθμίζει ολόκληρη την κίνηση με μία μόνη κίνηση των χεριών του». Το κατάλαβες; Το κατάλαβα. Γράφουν εξετάσεις. Και τι γράφει αυτός;

Πράγματι, το Πνεύμα το Άγιον ήρθε να μας δώσει, αγαπητοί μου, όπως λέγει εδώ, τας απαρχάς. Τη λέξη «απαρχή» χρησιμοποιεί ο Απόστολος Παύλος κάπου σε μια του επιστολή και λέγει ότι εμείς, νομίζω είναι στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο προς Ρωμαίους, και εμείς που έχουμε την απαρχή του Αγίου Πνεύματος στενάζομεν και συνωδίνομεν μαζί με την κτίση. Τι θα πει αυτό, ότι στενάζομεν ενώ έχουμε την απαρχή του Αγίου Πνεύματος; Θα πει απαρχή ό,τι λέει η λέξη. Κάτι που είναι η αρχή. Κάτι που είναι το ξεκίνημα. Έχουμε την απαρχή. Πότε σημειώθηκε η απαρχή;
