Summary

The lecture begins with Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s teaching that the Holy Spirit bears many names corresponding to His gifts, while God ultimately remains beyond every finite definition. The virginal conception constitutes a new creation: Christ receives true human nature from the Theotokos without human seed and becomes the ontological New Adam who renews fallen humanity. Through Holy Communion, the one mystery of the Incarnation becomes personally present in believers, who receive Christ and are called to become bearers of God.

Catechesis. Its subject is the Holy Spirit. Last time, we saw the various names of the Holy Spirit that he mentioned, names which, of course, arise from the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Thus Isaiah speaks of the spirit of wisdom, the spirit of understanding, the spirit of counsel, the spirit of might and knowledge, and so forth. For the Holy Spirit gives wisdom, understanding, might, knowledge, and the rest. We saw, then, that the names of the Holy Spirit are very many. And as we know, when speaking of God, there is, in essence, no name for God. There cannot be, because a name defines, but God cannot be defined.

If we say “table,” it can be defined. If we say “tape recorder,” it can be defined. If we say “human being,” a human being can be defined. Do you understand what I mean? It can be defined; I need not explain further. God cannot be defined. Indeed, the word “definition” comes from the verb “to define.” But a definition is finite. It says, “This object is this, this, and this”—and that is the end of it. A human being... But God cannot be defined, because God is not finite. How could God be defined? What is God? There is no definition. He has many names precisely because He has no name. When do we give something many names? When we cannot give it a single name. Take an example from ordinary human life. If you ask someone to describe something to you...

Can he define that thing for you? If he is not very educated, he will use roundabout descriptions. And such descriptions, we might say, are nothing other than many names. In the same way, God has many names precisely because He has no name; and He has no name because He cannot be defined. This is why Saint John of Damascus says that God is many-named because He is nameless. This is what we considered last time. And here Saint Cyril particularly emphasizes and tells us where the Holy Spirit acted, in which persons, and so forth. If you remember, in the previous lesson, the sixteenth catechesis, he mentioned a great multitude of names...

And, of course, examples of people who had the Spirit of God. Now he turns to the New Testament, beginning with the person of the Most Holy Theotokos. What you are about to hear is magnificent. It is magnificent, my dear friends. I shall read. Paragraph six. Those of you who have books, it is on page 218, at number 31, where the numbers appear in the margin: “This is the Holy Spirit who came upon the Holy Virgin Mary.” This very same Holy Spirit came upon the Holy Virgin Mary. “For since He who was to be born was Christ, the Only-begotten, the Power of the Most High overshadowed her, and the Holy Spirit came upon her and sanctified her, so that she might be able to receive Him through whom all things came into being.” Let us remain at this point, for it contains a great wealth of meaning. He says that because Christ, the One to be born, was the Only-begotten, He then had to take flesh—that is, to take on human nature—since within the whole Mystery of the Incarnation there would be...

The three Persons of the Holy Trinity. Who is the first Person? It is God, who here is called the Most High. And where is the Son, who comes to the Theotokos? He is indicated by the word “Power.” Listen to how it is expressed further down, at the bottom of the page. The angel said: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the Power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the Holy One who is born will be called the Son of God.” The Archangel Gabriel said this to the Theotokos. Since Saint Cyril takes up the angel’s words and quotes them here, I repeat them so that you may see all three Persons.

The Holy Spirit is one Person. Then what does he say? “He will come upon you”—He will come to you—but the Power of the Most High will also come to you and overshadow you. The Power is the Son, and the Most High is the Father. One of the names of the Son is the Power of God: Power. Thus all three Persons act together in the Incarnation. What we may not have known is the meaning of “the Power of the Most High”: this Power, as we have said, is the second Person of the Holy Trinity. I return to the text. What does it say here? The Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Annunciation...

“He sanctified her, so that she might be able to receive Him through whom all things came into being.” The Holy Spirit first had to come. He first had to cleanse the Theotokos. From what? Our Church teaches that the Theotokos had no personal sins. She did, however, bear ancestral sin. Pay attention to this. The Theotokos was not free from ancestral sin, as the Roman Church—the Western Church—teaches in what is called the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The Theotokos bore ancestral sin. She therefore had to be cleansed of ancestral sin. Here we have a patristic teaching. Thank you.

We could present this against those who say that the Theotokos was immaculate—that is, without any spot, stain, or defilement from ancestral sin. She had ancestral sin. After all, she was not personally responsible for it. But she had no personal sins. This is why the Archangel Gabriel praises her. This is also why generation after generation had to pass, and God guided history along the course I described to you: Adam, Seth, Noah, Abraham, Laostou, David, until we finally come to the Theotokos. Look across the centuries at this whole “effort,” if I may use such a word of God.

I place the word in quotation marks: this whole “effort” of God to bring forth the Theotokos. The Theotokos was indeed blameless; she had no personal sins. But now the Holy Spirit had to come and cleanse her of ancestral sin. “So that she might be able,” he says, “to receive.” To receive whom? “Him through whom all things came into being.” As the Evangelist John says so beautifully in his first chapter, speaking there of Jesus Christ as God the Word (Logos): “All things came into being through Him, and without Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” Nothing that exists came into being without Him—not even a single subatomic particle of matter. Nothing that exists came into being without Him.

All things came into being through the Word. And now the Theotokos had to receive Him. Please, try to grasp—try to grasp whom the Theotokos received within her womb: Him through whom all things came into being. How then could there be any question—if I may refer once again to that foolish, filthy, and blasphemous film...

“The Last Temptation.” And even if the film had never existed, the book was written by an impious man who, sadly, was our own countryman and who could so brutally insult the name of Jesus Christ. Can you grasp who Jesus Christ is? He is the One through whom all things came into being...

“And without Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” And I ask you: what of those who say, “I am going out of curiosity”? What curiosity? To see what? Whether your faith is true or not? Is it possible that Kazantzakis and his spiritual descendants, who bear a demonic element—for spiritually they descend from the line of Cain, as we said during the questions, and you see how serious this matter is; even the Antichrist will be from the line of Cain, spiritually speaking, mind you—could be right? Spiritually speaking, then: do you doubt your faith? You say you are curious and want to go and see what? Whether you have been deceived, whether Christ was perhaps not truly good, and now you are going to find out? Did Kazantzakis perhaps receive some revelation?

Does he bring to light something showing that, although you thought Christ was God—the One through whom all things came into being—He is not? This is why those who went to see it under the pretext of curiosity are reckoned as unbelievers, and indeed as unbelievers of the worst kind. It is unbelief in its worst form. I believe you understand.

I shall leave that here. And one more thing—what a struggle! I also heard the following argument: “Why should the film not be permitted? The director merely wanted to express another perspective, as he understood it, concerning the person of Christ.” Shall I answer? It is an insult. It amounts to the same thing.

What does it mean that he “wanted to express” something? What was there to express? Either Christ is God or He is not. For if He is not God, then why should I believe in Him? Why should such a blasphemous biography be written, while the sordid details of Buddha or Muhammad are not exposed? After all, not even Muhammad claimed to be God, but only a prophet of God. Nor did Buddha ever claim to be God. And yet, when a film was once made about Muhammad’s personal life—after all, he was a human being and did what he did, had wives, and whatever else—a Muslim country would not permit that American production to be shown...

A production, a film that insulted their prophet. Is it not sacrilege of the highest order that here in Greece—a land that received Christ, where the Gospel was written in the Greek language, and whose people believed and turned away from idolatry—we have reached the point of saying, “Kazantzakis, Scorsese, or anyone else has something worthwhile to tell us”? We Greeks say this, showing the extent of our apostasy. Today I went to the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos. Today is the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple. The church here in Ambelokipi was completely full, packed with people. But all those people who went to Church today, or who go on Sundays—what do they really...

Believe in their hearts concerning the person of the Theotokos or the person of Jesus Christ? For this person, or these people, who went to Church will surely also go to the cinema to see that film. And will those who went and saw it not also go to Church on Great Friday? When they see the icon of Christ upon the Cross, what will they think? That this is the slightly mad, foolish anarchist, debauched since the age of three, who is now crucified upon the Cross? What will they think? What attitude will they take, and why did they come to Church on Great Friday? My good man, why? See the sacrilege we have committed. Thank God it was banned, even though people said, “Medievalism has prevailed; obscurantism has prevailed.” Let them say whatever they wish. One thing matters: that we save the people...

From a severe punishment from God. If those Christians had not reacted, then surely—and I have spoken about this in connection with Phinehas in the Old Testament, if you wish to look it up—surely, surely the hand of God would have fallen with terrible weight upon our homeland. Yes, one day we shall understand. How shall we understand? I shall repeat the point and close this digression, which has not been pleasant for me. What does Saint Cyril say here? That the Theotokos was cleansed by the Holy Spirit, “so that she might be able to receive Him through whom all things came into being”—the One through whom everything was created. When you reflect on who made the universe, and that He is Jesus Christ, you should be seized by...

A profound sense of awe. Awe—do you hear? This is how we can enter more deeply into theology. We say: Christ is the One who created everything. It is not as though God created the world and then Christ came to save us. The very One who made the world comes to save us, because we have disfigured His creation. Yes, then, what more can we say? Let us continue. “There is no need for many words for you to learn that the birth was undefiled and immaculate.” There is no need for me to tell you at length; you already know it, he says. He often speaks in the singular, just as a speaker may address a crowd, an audience, and speak to each person in the singular: “You know this, my brother!”

Does that surprise you? “There is no need,” he says; I need not use many words “for you to learn,” and so forth. To learn what? That the birth was immaculate and undefiled, with no stain or defilement anywhere. “Gabriel says to her: ‘I am the herald of what is to be born, but I am not a fellow-worker in it. Although I am an Archangel, I know my rank. I announce to you the greeting “Rejoice,” but the manner in which you will give birth does not come from my grace.’” The angel says: “I am not a fellow-worker in the birth that is to come; I do not know how this will happen. What I have come to say to you is ‘Rejoice’: to praise you and bring you the message that this will take place.” Pay attention to this.

I am not a fellow-worker in this. When God the Word (Logos) created the universe of the starry heavens and our earth—I do not simply say “the earth,” because the earth is itself a star within the universe—it was God the Word who created the starry heavens. Did He have angels as helpers? Not one, not one. What does the Book of Job say? “When the stars were made, all My angels praised Me with a loud voice.” “Were made” does not mean that they were born; it means that they came into being, that they were created. “When the stars were made, the angels praised Me.” The angels saw and marveled...

They glorified God. But in the creation of the universe, take heed, God acts alone; the angels are not His fellow-workers. When He creates man, does He have angels as fellow-workers? No. “Let Us make man in Our image and according to Our likeness.” The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit create. The angels do not create together with Them; they are witnesses. Listen carefully: they are witnesses, because God alone creates. The angels are creatures, and therefore they cannot create. Nor does man create, especially out of nothing. God alone creates, and this is a property of God alone. But when Saint Cyril says here...

The Holy Spirit comes to cleanse the Theotokos, so that the Power of the Most High may overshadow her. In other words, God the Father, the Most High, overshadows the Theotokos, and the Power of God—who is that? The Son—now takes up His dwelling in the womb of the Theotokos. How did this happen? Follow closely and pay attention, please. When God made Adam, He took earth and fashioned him. Adam was not born; Adam was created. When God took flesh from Adam and made Eve, Eve was not born.

She was created: Adam from the earth, Eve from Adam’s living substance, and then Cain through the familiar union of Holy Matrimony. From that point onward, all human beings are born in this way—all of them, without exception. All except Jesus Christ. Why? If Christ had received the seed of a man, He would have been within the cycle of ancestral sin. But Christ receives no seed from a man. Please understand why the Theotokos is a Virgin; we must learn this truth.

The birth of Christ from a Virgin is testified to in many ways in the Old Testament—many ways! There is not only Isaiah’s prophecy, “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive,” but also “the gate that is shut,” and many other passages. Concerning the shut gate, it says that it remains shut: God alone will pass through it, and it will remain shut. These are profound meanings from the vision of Ezekiel and elsewhere. And now God the Word, the Power of the Most High who overshadows her—that is, who draws near to the Theotokos—takes from her flesh what we call a portion, a part...

Which contained both the matter of a human body and a human soul. Here, perhaps, we may begin to approach the mystery of how the soul exists in each human being. A person receives it from his mother and father, yet the souls of the parents are not diminished, and each person’s soul is entirely his own. It is a mystery, a mystery. So, without the seed of a man, He took from the human flesh of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), in order to build upon that human flesh a new man. Therefore, in this act involving the Most Holy Theotokos, we have a new creation—truly a new creation.

For Christ had to be called the New Adam. Christ is not the New Adam in a merely moral sense; He is the New Adam in an ontological sense, in His very being. We truly have a new creation. Pay close attention to this point: we have a new creation. This is how it had to happen. Two things had to be preserved. First, He had to descend from the human race. If it had been otherwise—if Christ had again taken earth from the ground and fashioned a body for Himself—then He would have been something foreign to our nature. He had to take our own nature in order to save it, while at the same time constituting a new creation.

This is the astonishing thing. And this work was accomplished by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Pay attention to one more point. When God caused Adam to fall asleep, He took, Scripture says, a rib from his side and built—constructed—her.

Queen. Just yesterday we had a discussion. Someone had a little child. I asked, how did we put it there? Did we say that she “gave birth,” or that she “is present”? How did we say it? Or what other word did we use? What phrase contains “conceived”?

Thank you. That is what I am showing you: there is a word, a phrase using the verb “to build.” The Psalms say, “for the generation that is being created.” The generation is built; that expression exists. And here too, notice that Scripture uses the verb “built.” The verb is significant: God “built” the woman from Adam’s side. It does not say “begot” or “gave birth”; it says “built.” To create, to build. Thus, for Eve to come into being, part of Adam’s body was borrowed. Now pay close attention to what follows. What does Eve—that is, woman—owe? This is her debt.

She owes it—this is her debt to Adam. Every woman is indebted to Adam, since flesh was taken from Adam for woman to come into being. Now the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), without the seed of a man, gives from her own flesh to Christ, the New Adam, and repays the debt: “I borrowed from you, and now I return it to you, so that You, the New Adam, may be built.” Thus Eve’s ancient debt was paid. This is very beautiful. What I want you to remember is why the Theotokos was—or rather...

Why she had to be a Virgin. It was not for some other reason, and not because of ritual purity, for Holy Matrimony is not something unclean. A little later we shall see that the Holy Spirit certainly comes to those who are married as well. She had to be a Virgin because there had to be a new creation. I insist on this point, and we shall understand why, for it is of fundamental importance. And if you wish, this too is magnificent: how does the Church make present the Body of Christ, as it came from the Theotokos, as a new creation? How the Church makes present the Body of Christ precisely as the new creation—this is the...

Mystery. I made a mistake here, yet I keep saying “another Mystery.” My mistake is calling it “another,” though for the moment it helps me to speak that way. It is the same Mystery—the other Mystery, as I called it, of the Holy Eucharist. What exactly do I mean? Look. Upon the Holy Table we have bread and wine. Whom does the priest invoke? First of all, to whom is the great prayer offered? This prayer for the consecration of the Precious Gifts is therefore called the Holy Anaphora. That is its name, from the word meaning “to offer up.” I offer up; I raise up. We have offered to the Lord God the fruits of the earth: “Your own, from Your own.”

We offer them; we have lifted them up. This is the symbolic act that unfolds. We therefore offer up the fruits of the earth, which are ultimately not ours but God’s; yet we have added our labor, as Saint Nicholas Cabasilas says. We have put our labor into them. What does that mean? We do not offer grapes, but wine. We do not offer wheat, but bread. In this way our labor has entered into the offering. And what happens now? What happens now? After our offering, God must give His own offering.

He will transform those same gifts—the wine and the bread, the fruit of our labor—into His own gifts, which are the Body and Blood of Christ. And now whom does the priest invoke? The Father. And what does he say to the Father in the Divine Liturgy, in the prayer of the Holy Anaphora? He asks the Father to send down His Holy Spirit, to change the bread into the Body of His Christ, and likewise the wine into His Blood. At the end he says, “Send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here set forth.” He says first “upon us,” and then “upon these Gifts here set forth,” because we are to receive them. This is what happened with the Most Holy Theotokos. First the Holy Spirit came to cleanse her.

Then the Mystery of the transformation took place within her. So too here, in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, we ask first that the Holy Spirit come. You see, we cannot alter the order; everything has been rightly arranged. First He must come upon us and cleanse us, as He cleansed the Most Holy Theotokos, and then make the bread and wine the Body and Blood of Christ, so that we may be ready to receive them. This is profound, is it not? And what do we say? We ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit and to make the wine and bread the Body and Blood of His Christ. We see that all three Persons act together, just as in the conception—the Incarnation of the Son of God in the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos. Who is it that acts here? The Holy Spirit.

We ask this of the Father: that He send the Holy Spirit. The Father wills that the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of His Christ. The Son wills the same. Thus, through the presence of the Father, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the presence of the Son, the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ. What is this Mystery? It is like what we were saying yesterday about a second or third Pentecost—do you remember? We said that there was the Pentecost of the Twelve and the one hundred and twenty disciples, its typological manifestation in Cornelius...

And Pentecost in the Apostle Paul. Yet I would say that we do not have three Pentecosts; we have one Pentecost, the same event made present at different moments in time. So then, pay attention: whenever we celebrate the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—the Divine Liturgy—we have the Mystery of the Incarnation. It is the same event that took place then in the Most Holy Theotokos and is repeated. No, that is wrong: it is not repeated; it is the same Mystery. Earlier I said “again,” and I told you that I would correct it. “Again” would mean that it is repeated over and over. No, it is not repeated. It is the same Mystery of the Incarnation, made present in another manner by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

In every Divine Liturgy we have the very same Mystery that took place in the Theotokos. Do we understand this? Can we now understand what the Divine Liturgy is? We can. Do we understand what it means to receive Holy Communion? How greatly our people, my dear ones, need to be instructed and to learn! Once they learn, then... Do you know what every believer is called? I am not the one saying it; Saint Nikodemos says it. If you wish, he devotes a whole large page to what I am about to tell you, in the Heortodromion. Every believer is a bearer of Christ and a bearer of God—a Christotokos and a Theotokos.

Do you hear that every believer is a Theotokos, a bearer of God? Why? Because what took place in the Mystery of the Most Holy Theotokos takes place in every believer. It is astonishing: Christ comes to be born within me. When I receive Christ, I give birth to Christ. I therefore become a Christotokos, a bearer of Christ. I hesitate to use the term “Christotokos” because of the heresy of Nestorius. It is not wrong when understood in the way I have just explained it, but to avoid any confusion, I prefer to say “Theotokos,” a bearer of God. Every believer becomes a bearer of God. And the event of the Nativity of Christ, which we also celebrate, is a feast...

not merely a feast, but an event that is repeated in every believer. This is the believer’s relationship with Jesus Christ, the Son of God. But let us continue with the same phrase that concludes this paragraph. It says: “And the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” For this reason, the Archangel Gabriel told her, the One who would be born would be called—and would be—“the Holy One who is to be born.” The expression is in the neuter gender, of course. As an aside, “the Holy One who is to be born” will be called the Son of God. Pay attention here!

A foolish man was accusing one of us and saying that Christ is not God, because if He prayed to God, how could He Himself be God? He said this to a man who had gone to his office, filling his ears with such foolish nonsense. That man then came and told me: “Do you know what he was saying? This.” So I have an answer to give on this point, and I shall give it. The very event described here provides the answer; that is why it came to mind. When it says that the Son “will be born,” His begetting as the Word (Logos) is outside time and eternal—or, more precisely, everlasting without beginning, because what is eternal may have a beginning but has no end.

But what is everlasting in itself is without beginning and without end. Thus, the begetting of the Son as God the Word is without beginning and without end. Yet from the moment He assumes human nature, that human nature exists in time; it belongs to history. And Scripture says that He “will be called the Son of God.” But is He not already the Son of God? Why, then, does it say that He will be called the Son of God? It is His human nature that will be called the Son of God, not His divine nature. Consequently, since His human nature will be called the Son of God, He naturally prays to the Father according to His human nature. That is all there is to it.

Does He pray to the Father as God, as the Word? No. He prays as the Son of Man—that is, as man. According to His human nature, He prays to the Father. And we must never forget that in Jesus Christ there are both natures, the divine and the human. May I dwell on one more point? “Therefore, the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” “The Holy One.” I would like to pause over the word “Holy.”

Since the Theotokos had been sanctified—she was free from personal sin, yet the Holy Spirit purified her from ancestral sin—and since this was a new creation, like the creation of Adam in Paradise, then the meaning becomes clear. Adam was without sin. Pay attention: Adam was without sin. So it is entirely natural to understand that the One who would be born would be Holy. There can be no doubt about it. But I want to go a little further, because this question once arose and occupied a Synod—not an Ecumenical Council, but one of the local Synods of Constantinople and the like. I have told you this before, but there is no harm in repeating it. Tell me: was Christ’s human nature deified or not?

On Mount Tabor, they saw Christ’s deified human nature. But when Christ was born, grew, walked, ate, drank, spoke, taught, and was crucified, was that human nature which was crucified already deified? And was He who died upon the Cross deified? Some said no. The Synod therefore declared that Christ’s human nature was deified from the moment of conception. From that very moment, His humanity was deified. When the Archangel beheld the conception, what did he see? For the conception was already flesh, was it not? When we speak of conception, we are speaking of flesh. The angel sees created matter.

This is what we hear in that famous first troparion, the first stanza: “The chief angel was sent from heaven.” When he saw You taking flesh, it says, the angel who stood and spoke to the Theotokos was struck with amazement. Thus, for the first time, the angelic world saw God in human nature, in the human person of Jesus Christ. It was the first time in the history of the angels. No one had ever seen God—ever. So what do we see here? The angel beheld His deified human nature.

Everything was pure. When the Theotokos received the Holy Spirit in order to be purified, what did that mean? It meant that she underwent theosis, that she was divinised. And what did she give to God the Word? Deified flesh. The Most Holy Theotokos herself had undergone theosis. She had to be divinised in order to give deified flesh. How could she have given deified flesh if she herself had not been divinised? And when did she undergo theosis? When she was purified by the Holy Spirit. These things happened simultaneously: purification, theosis, and conception. They happened at the same time. Therefore, when the word “Holy” is used here, it means that Christ’s body was deified. Christ’s body did not become deified upon the Cross or after the Resurrection. It was always deified.

This theosis was concealed precisely so that the demons and the devil might be deceived and mankind might be saved. After all, what did the devil do in Paradise? He deceived Adam. So now the devil himself had to be deceived. Do you understand? It is the movement reversed: you deceived man and brought death to humanity; now the movement will be reversed. I shall come and deceive you, and I shall deceive you by preventing you from seeing My divine nature. The devil could not see the divine nature, but neither could he see the theosis of Christ’s flesh. He saw only what other people saw, and nothing more. Only the three disciples, for a certain length of time...

for some time—not merely an instant, because we see that a dialogue took place, so it must have lasted for a while—saw Christ in His deified humanity upon Mount Tabor. He did not become deified at that moment. Rather, He revealed to the disciples’ eyes, insofar as they were able to behold it, as the troparion says, His deified human nature, which had always been deified. And when we receive Holy Communion, we receive His body. Which body of Christ? Christ’s deified body. Pay attention: this is what we receive in Holy Communion. That is precisely why the person who receives Holy Communion undergoes theosis.

Is there any other way for us to attain theosis, my dear friends, apart from the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist? We are not divinised merely by keeping the commandments; we are divinised when we believe, are baptised, and receive the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. This paragraph, which we have now completed, is the sixth. You have seen how magnificent it is. I assure you—I do not know how else to put it—when I read these things and prepare to tell them to you, I am the first to be deeply shaken. Truly, I am overwhelmed. I would not take anything away from that word. It means exactly what it says: I am deeply shaken. Many times I truly weep. What majesty! What majesty! And sometimes they give us readings about morals and various other matters, and I say: “Oh, what shall I tell them? What shall I tell them?” And I wish...

that the Spirit of God would illumine you, so that you too might be deeply moved. Now we proceed to the next paragraph, the seventh, marked with the letter zeta. It is at the top of page 219. “This same Holy Spirit also acted in Elizabeth.” The same Holy Spirit, it says, also acted in Elizabeth. Was this for the conception? No, not for the conception; pay attention. Elizabeth had conceived John the Baptist six months earlier. John’s conception took place in the natural manner—completely so. Pay attention. We have explained how the old Adam came into being, how the New Adam came into being, and how Eve came into being, and so forth. So then...

the same Holy Spirit also acted in Elizabeth. “For He knows not only virgins, but also the married, if the marriage is according to the law.” Where, then, do we see the Holy Spirit acting? First, in what was said to Zacharias. More importantly and more literally, John received the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb. Yes, even as an embryo he was a bearer of the Spirit. From the Holy Spirit whom John received, John imparted grace to Elizabeth, enabling her to say to the Theotokos: “Why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should visit me?” Mary is the mother of whom? Of my Lord, whom you now carry in your womb, within you. How was Elizabeth able to say this? We shall see a little later, where Saint Cyril also speaks of it. Or how was Zacharias able to compose that hymn concerning John and say: “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High,” and that you would do this and that? Where did these words come from? From the Holy Spirit. But since our time is nearly over—we still have ten minutes—I would like to remain with one point, if those ten minutes are enough. Do you know which one? It is where the text says: “For He knows not only virgins.” The Holy Spirit knows not only virgins...

He also knows those who are married. Let us not complain: the Spirit of God also comes to married people. But when? “If the marriage is according to the law”—that is, according to God’s law. Is a civil marriage according to God’s law? Certainly not. How, then, can you enter a civil marriage and expect to have the Spirit of God? How can you expect to raise children who bear the Spirit and to prosper in your marriage and family life, if you have no share in the Holy Spirit? And there is more. When a marriage begins with fornication—which in our time has become fashionable, if I may put it that way to make you smile—it has become fashionable for relationships to progress in this way, and for parents to bring the prospective groom or bride into their home and allow them to sleep in the same bed, with the parents’ approval. What do you think? Does this create the conditions for the Spirit of God to come upon these people? Such a marriage is not according to God’s law. When the law of God says, “You shall not commit fornication,” and both the Old Testament and the New Testament say this clearly, how can the Spirit of God come, so to speak, and descend...

into the very being of these people when fornication has come first? This is why we insist that a person should make Holy Confession before marrying and receive Holy Communion, so that we may create the conditions for the Spirit of God to come. And those poor wedding crowns—those poor crowns! I have told you this before in answer to one of your questions: the crowns are not an essential element of the Mystery of Holy Matrimony. They are the Church’s reward to the couple, the newlyweds, because they have reached that hour pure and virginal as they enter the Mystery of Holy Matrimony. The crowns are placed upon them just as crowns are placed upon victors. Indeed, that is where the wedding crowns come from: the arena.

Do you think that, under such circumstances, the crowns become a mockery? Do you? Or at least let a person repent, even afterward. The Lord loves mankind. This is the New Testament. If we were under the Old Testament, there would have been no forgiveness—no forgiveness at all. But the Lord loves mankind, even if one repents afterward, even ten, twenty, or fifty years after the wedding. Recognise it, come to your senses, and say: “This is how I entered marriage—sinfully and unlawfully. I shall go and ask God’s forgiveness. I shall go to Holy Confession so that, even now, I may receive remission of sins and the Spirit of God may come upon me.” Do you see? But...

Well... I would like to say one more thing. When the text says that the Holy Spirit comes also to those who are married—that He knows the married and not only virgins—how could the Spirit of God possibly fail to come to someone who desires to establish a family? How could that be? Let me ask you: when Adam—you see how often we return to Adam? See here the value of the Old Testament. Without the Old Testament, we would know nothing. When Adam saw Eve, do you know what he said? “This is flesh of my flesh and bone of my bones.” He recognised her. And there Adam...

uttered a prophecy. Adam prophesied: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” Adam said this.

When the Pharisees brought this matter before Christ, Christ used Adam’s words. They said that Moses had permitted a certificate of separation—that is, divorce. And Christ replied: “Because of your hardness of heart.” When a woman is in danger of being killed by a brutal husband, when he abuses her to the utmost degree, even to the point where she may lose her life...

then one is compelled to grant a divorce, certainly as a concession and with mercy. For Moses must surely have asked God; he did nothing on his own. Indeed, the Lord Himself vindicates Moses. Yet the Lord then adds: “From the beginning God made them male and female,” and no one may separate them—no one. Not even parents may separate their children once they have married. This is precisely why there is such grave accountability and such a heavy responsibility. A mother and father, parents or in-laws—I am speaking of the parents themselves, without even mentioning more distant relatives...

They create problems for their married children—problems that can even lead them to divorce. Their responsibility is exceedingly grave. The Lord said, “What God has joined together, let no man separate.” Notice why He puts it in the neuter: because this new creature is neither the man alone nor the woman alone, but the man and the woman together—a new, inseparable and undivided existence. This is very important! So then, who said that Eve came from Adam’s bones and flesh? Adam was in a state of ecstasy at that moment; how, then, did he prophesy?

Did he prophesy Holy Matrimony? Holy Matrimony was foretold before the Fall—mark this well, before the Fall. It simply did not take place within Paradise; it took place outside Paradise. How, then, did Adam prophesy Holy Matrimony? Who places prophecy in the mouth of a man, of a prophet? The Holy Spirit. Therefore, the Holy Spirit reveals this to Adam and illumines him to speak about Holy Matrimony. Is it possible, then, that the Holy Spirit would not visit married people? You see it now. Married people, too, truly have the Holy Spirit.

Married couples can make fruitful use of this if they become spiritual people—and, as I said, they must make fruitful use of it—becoming spiritual people and raising their children to be spiritual children. Then we can say that the Spirit of God dwells in married people, in husband and wife, and unites them. What unites them? Two things: Christ and the Holy Spirit—both of them. Christ and the Holy Spirit unite them. So when they abide—listen to how the Apostle Paul says it in many places—“in Christ Jesus,” “in the Holy Spirit,” phrases that we often cannot adequately translate. This means being within Christ and within the Spirit of God, within the Holy Spirit.

Holy Scripture says somewhere that the children born of them will be holy. The Apostle Paul says that their children, too, will be holy—that is, they too will have the Spirit of God. Do you see what the Word of God and the Spirit of God offer us concerning such great and profoundly important matters,

matters that touch our very existence at every moment and belong to our life and everyday experience? All these things remain utterly relevant, because the Spirit of God and Christ are the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

«Χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἓν ὃ γέγονεν». Και σας ερωτώ: εκείνοι που λένε ότι «πάω από περιέργεια» — τι περιέργεια; Να δεις τι; Αν καλώς πιστεύεις ή δεν πιστεύεις; Ότι μπορεί να δέχθηκε ο Καζαντζάκης και οι πνευματικοί του απόγονοι, που έχουν το δαιμονικό στοιχείο — γιατί αυτοί κατάγονται κατά πνεύμα από τη γενεά του Κάιν, που λέγαμε την ώρα των αποριών, και βλέπετε το πράγμα είναι σοβαρό, και ο Αντίχριστος από τη γενεά του Κάιν θα είναι, κατά πνεύμα εννοείται, προσέξτε — κατά πνεύμα, λοιπόν. Έχεις αμφιβολία για την πίστη σου; Έχεις, λέει, περιέργεια να πάω να δω τι, μπας και σε γέλασαν, ότι ο Χριστός κάτι καλό δεν ήταν, και τώρα πας να δεις; Μήπως δέχτηκε ο Καζαντζάκης καμία αποκάλυψη;

Βασίλισσα. Μόλις εχθές είχαμε μία συζήτηση. Κάποιος έκανε ένα παιδάκι. Λέω, πώς το είπαμε εκεί; Ότι έτεκεν ή είναι παρούσης; Πώς το λέγαμε; Ή πώς το είπαμε; Πώς; Όχι, δηλαδή ποια άλλη λέξη είχαμε; Ποιο έχει το «εκύησεν»;

Αφού... Αφού αγιάστηκε η Θεοτόκος, καταρχάς ήταν αναμάρτητος, αλλά αγιάστηκε από το προπατορικό αμάρτημα από το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Η δημιουργία είναι καινούρια, όπως έγινε ο Αδάμ στον Παράδεισο. Ο Αδάμ ήταν ο αναμάρτητος. Προσέξτε με, ο Αδάμ ήταν ο αναμάρτητος. Τότε το κατανοούμε πάρα πολύ φυσικόν ότι εκείνο που θα γεννηθεί θα είναι Άγιον. Αναμφισβήτητα. Αλλά εγώ θέλω να προχωρήσω λίγο περισσότερο, γιατί κάποτε προέκυψε θέμα και απασχόλησε σύνοδον. Όχι Οικουμενική, αλλά από τας συνόδους τας τοπικάς της Κωνσταντινουπόλεως κλπ. Σας το έχω ξαναπεί, αλλά δεν πειράζει αν κάνουμε επαναλήψεις. Δεν μου λέτε, η ανθρωπίνη φύση του Χριστού ήταν θεωμένη ή όχι;

Δημιουργούν προβλήματα στα παιδιά τους που παντρεύτηκαν, προβλήματα που μπορούν να τους οδηγήσουν και εις το διαζύγιο. Είναι βαρυτάτη η ευθύνη. Ο Κύριος είπε: «Εκείνο το οποίο ο Θεός συνέζευξεν, ἄνθρωπος μὴ χωριζέτω». Προσέξτε γιατί το βάζει ουδέτερον, γιατί αυτό το καινούριο πλάσμα δεν είναι ούτε ο άνδρας ούτε η γυναίκα, αλλά είναι και ο άνδρας και η γυναίκα, μια καινούρια, αδιαχώριστη, αμέριστη ύπαρξη. Σπουδαίο αυτό! Λοιπόν, ποιος είπε ότι η Εύα βγήκε από τα οστά και τη σάρκα του Αδάμ; Εκεί μάλλον, δηλαδή ήτο εν εκστάσει ο Αδάμ, και πώς προφητεύει;
