Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that titles such as Spirit of Christ and Spirit of God refer to the one Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity. As the Spirit of Promise, He seals believers at baptism and gives them a foretaste and assurance of the Kingdom of God. Christians are warned not to place political parties or ideologies above Christ, the Church, and the Orthodox faith.

We are now in the seventeenth catechetical lecture of Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem. Like the sixteenth, the seventeenth also concerns the Holy Spirit. After the introduction to this seventeenth lecture, we have already seen that Saint Cyril wants to show his catechumens that “Spirit” is not His only name. There are many names: the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, the Spirit of the Father, the Spirit of the Son, and so forth. Yet there is only one Holy Spirit, and under no circumstances should these names be taken to mean that there are many Holy Spirits. As I told you, the Holy Spirit is one. This is what Saint Cyril wishes to demonstrate. At the same time, he gives us an opportunity to examine certain points that will greatly help us interpret the texts. Thank you very much. When he says “the Spirit of Christ” or “the Spirit of God,” how should we understand this? “The Spirit of Christ” does not mean that the Spirit is Christ Himself, but that He is the Holy Spirit sent by Christ. Or take the phrase “the Spirit of God.” We have said that God is spirit; so how can we speak of “the Spirit of God” when God is already spirit? It means that this Spirit

is distinct: He is a Person, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, whom the Father sends, and so forth. For those of you following in the book, we were at paragraph four, right at the bottom. I should tell those of you with the book that there are numbers beside the text. These numbers mark every five lines: five, ten, fifteen, twenty. So when we say “paragraph four” and then say that we are now at lines thirty-five, thirty-six, thirty-seven, thirty-eight, we mean line thirty-eight. The numbers are printed in the margin, and by counting from them we can find the point where we stopped. Here, then...

where we stopped last time, he says: “He is also called the Spirit of Christ, as it is written.” He is called not only the Spirit of the Son of God, but also the Spirit of Christ. For we must not forget that when we say “Christ,” we also mean His human nature. When we say “the Son of God,” we mean only His divine nature. Therefore, in relation also to His human nature, the Son of God is Christ—a title that reveals the work He is to accomplish through His human nature, the work of our salvation—and so the Holy Spirit is also called the Spirit of Christ. “As it is written: searching what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating,” as the Apostle Peter says in his First Epistle.

So, He is the Spirit of Christ. And again: “Through your prayer and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,” says the Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the Philippians. You see? “The Spirit of Jesus Christ.” This means the Spirit who comes from Jesus Christ, that is, the Holy Spirit. Now we move on to the fifth paragraph. Only one line of the fourth paragraph remained. He says: “Add to these still other names of the Holy Spirit, and you will find them.” He means that you can find many other names besides these. Saint Cyril now

classifies these names. First he considered names relating to the Father and the Son; now he considers names of the Holy Spirit relating to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This concerns us, especially in interpreting the texts. Many times we cannot work out the meaning of a passage from the Apostle Paul. We simply cannot. But in this way, as I told you earlier, we will be able to interpret such passages better when we study by ourselves. He continues: “For He is called the Spirit of holiness, as it is written.” He is also called the Spirit of holiness. Where is this written? It is in Romans, chapter one, verse four.

“For He is called the Spirit of holiness, as it is written: according to the Spirit of holiness.” That is, according to the Spirit who grants holiness. What does this mean? It does not merely mean that the Spirit is holy, but that the Holy Spirit gives the gift of holiness. Therefore, “Spirit of holiness” means that He comes to give you holiness, to establish sanctification and holiness within you as well. Do you remember what we were saying yesterday about the Holy Spirit? I believe it was yesterday. When the Father says, “You shall be holy, for I am holy”—we spoke of this yesterday evening in the homily: “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

How am I to become holy? God the Father commands this of me. Of course, all three Persons command it, but here we speak of God the Father. How am I to attain it? The Son will come to help me, for sanctification also has a Christological dimension. The Holy Spirit, who abides in the Church, will come as well. When I receive the Body of Christ, am I not sanctified? Yes; but the Holy Spirit, who abides in the Church, will come and grant me this sanctification, so that I may become what the Father commands me to be—or what the Father wills and commands through the Son. Listen to another saying: “You therefore shall be perfect, as your Father in heaven is perfect.” How am I to become perfect? Perfection means sanctification. How will I attain it? The Father wills it and is the prototype; the Son comes and tells me of it; and the Holy Spirit will help me attain this sanctification. Therefore, my dear friends, know this: without the Holy Spirit, sanctification is impossible. We speak of spiritual life. What does “spiritual life” mean? It is not something abstract. Spiritual life means the life created by the Holy Spirit. We use the expression loosely when we speak of the “spiritual life” of a place, meaning its artistic and cultural contributions

and the like. We call that “the spiritual life of the community”: there is a concert, an art exhibition, and so on. This is a loose use of the term. Or, if you prefer, it refers to things produced by the human spirit. But there is the human spirit, and there is the Spirit of God. The human spirit creates culture, but the Spirit of God creates sanctification. Therefore, I cannot attain spiritual life unless I have the Holy Spirit. This is why He is also called the Spirit of holiness. “He is also called the Spirit of Adoption, as Paul says: ‘For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of Adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.”’”

“Father.” Abba is the Hebrew word for father. Here the Apostle Paul uses two languages for the same word. He says it in Hebrew and then in Greek: “Abba, Father.” Pay attention. How am I to call God Father? How am I to address Him with the words, “Our Father, who art in heaven”? “Our Father.” Who is it that will help me call God Father? The Holy Spirit.

My dear friends! It is so great a thing, though it seems so easy, and so difficult a thing, though it seems so simple: to call God Father. For if someone does not have the Spirit of God, it is impossible—utterly impossible—for him to call God Father. Tell someone who does not believe in the Holy Spirit, who does not even believe in God, that God is the Father. He will offer you a thousand theories about God. God is far away, he will say. He will speak of deism—deism with a “d,” not theism with a “th”: deism. Deism teaches that God made the world but has no concern for it; He left it to move along by chance and follow its own course. In other words, such a God is not the Father. A father is one who cares for his children. No, ask such a person, and he will not tell you that God is the Father. He does not believe it. Know that he does not have the Spirit of God, just as you cannot call Jesus Lord unless you have the Holy Spirit.

“No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit,” says the Apostle Paul. Tell someone that Christ is God. If he does not believe in the divinity of Christ—and unfortunately there are many such Greeks today—then, though they were once our Christians, once our Orthodox Christians, they have tragically repudiated their Baptism. Tragically. Of course, by virtue of that first Baptism they can return and enter into metanoia, repentance. We do not baptize them again. But so long as they remain in this state, we must sadly speak of them as former Christians, though things should not be this way. Tell them that Christ is God, and they will not accept it. To call Jesus—the historical Jesus—Lord, you must have the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul says this clearly. In the same way,

you cannot call God Father unless you have the Holy Spirit. But when you call God Father, you thereby become His son. For how can I call someone my father without at the same time being regarded as his son? Therefore, the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Adoption. Through adoption by grace, He makes us adopted children of the Father. He brings us before the Father as His adopted children, and then we too call the Father of the Son, Jesus Christ, our Father. But He is our Father not by essence, of course, but by grace; for the only Son by essence is the natural Son, the second Person of the Holy Trinity.

“And He is the Spirit of Revelation, yes, as it is written: ‘May He give you,’” the Apostle Paul says to the Ephesians, “‘the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation in the full knowledge of Him.’” May He give you the Spirit of Wisdom and the Spirit of Revelation, so that you may know Jesus Christ. What does “Spirit of Wisdom” mean? It means the Holy Spirit who gives wisdom. What does “Spirit of Revelation” mean? The Holy Spirit who reveals a truth. Therefore, you see that once again the Holy Spirit

takes His name in this way from the gift of revelation. He is the One who truly reveals to us truths that until then we could not understand. This matter of revelation is a very great thing. My dear friends, let us entreat the Holy Spirit very often—at every moment—to give us the Spirit of Revelation and the Spirit of Wisdom. Wisdom is not simply knowledge, as the Greeks understand it. Rather, as we find in the Old Testament, it is identical with the Lord’s instruction. Does Holy Scripture not speak of “the instruction of the Lord”? It is the education and formation that the Lord gives us. He instructs and forms us through His Holy Spirit. In the second Psalm it says:

“Take hold of instruction, lest the Lord be angry.” Take hold. The Greek verb means to grasp something in the fist, to seize it. “Take hold of the Lord’s instruction.” Seize the instruction of the Lord. The Lord’s instruction is the Lord’s wisdom, which the Holy Spirit gives me. Do not refuse to let the Holy Spirit give you this instruction. “Lest the Lord be angry,” for the Lord wants us to possess this wisdom, this instruction, and this revelation. He wills it. And if we refuse, then the Lord is angry with us. So who will give us this Spirit of Wisdom and Spirit of Revelation? The Holy Spirit.

“Unveil my eyes,” says the Psalmist, “that I may behold the wonders within Your law.” We need our eyes to be unveiled and opened so that we may understand the wisdom of God. Once again, it is the Holy Spirit who shows us the wisdom of God. My dear friends, Holy Scripture is both an open book and a closed book. How can I see it as an open book? I go to a bookstore, buy a copy of Holy Scripture, and leaf through it. I know Greek, so I read the book. What does that mean? It is an open book, and it is not physically locked. Then what does it mean for it to be a closed book? It means that I understand nothing in this book,

nothing of its hidden wisdom. How can I understand this hidden wisdom of Holy Scripture unless the Holy Spirit reveals to me the wisdom contained within Holy Scripture? Perhaps, while studying the Scriptures—especially when you persevere in that study and have devoted years to it—you have sometimes discovered something. If at some moment something is revealed to you and you understand it, it is the Holy Spirit who is revealing that passage to you. And I will say something more: “Those who have received the experience know.”

Sometimes when I speak, it does no harm to use a phrase like this: “Those who have received the experience know.” Those who have tasted and acquired experience of the thing know what I am about to say. A moment comes as we study Holy Scripture, something like what happens high in the atmosphere, where we speak of holes being formed...

There is a layer called the ozone layer. There are many layers; the atmosphere is complex. We say that a hole forms in the ozone layer, meaning that the sun’s rays pass through there without being blocked by the ozone layer.

My dear friends, there are moments when we study Holy Scripture and openings seem to appear in heaven, and suddenly we understand something...

It is overwhelming, but we cannot convey it to others. I cannot convey it; it is personal. That is why I said, “Those who have experienced it know.” Pay attention to this; it is very important. There are moments when such understanding is granted. What is it? A breach, an opening. It is that window opened in heaven. “And behold, a door was opened in heaven,” as John the Evangelist says. He looks into heaven and, “behold,” he says, “a door.” What does it mean that a door was opened? It means that one can now see—in this case, John, who is on earth—the Mysteries of heaven. He can see them, but he cannot express them. John the Evangelist expressed them in another language, the language in which he writes the Apocalypse.

Other truths of heaven also come to be known by us in this way. It is far more than simply understanding something—far more than what I have described. We must therefore ask the Spirit of God to reveal these truths to us, because this is a very great thing. For the Apostle says, “in the full knowledge of Him.” He does not say merely “in knowledge,” but “in full knowledge.” Of whom? Of Him, Jesus Christ. How can I put it? For a moment, you truly grasp who Jesus Christ is. Do you hear this? Well, who is He? He is the Son of God who became man. That itself is a revelation, but it is only the first stage, the first layer.

Do you want to understand this through living experience, in a way that overwhelms you? It is what I told you about: the heavens are pierced, as it were, so that this special illumination may come. This too is from the Holy Spirit: to be overwhelmed by who Jesus Christ is and to stand there thunderstruck, your mouth open in amazement. Yes. I believe there are people who have had this experience and are shaken to the depths of their being. Many tears may come at that moment. It is a special state, truly a special state. Let us continue. “He is also called,” Saint Cyril continues, “the Spirit of Promise, as the Apostle himself says: ‘In Him you also, having believed…’”

“You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of Promise”—that is, with the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Promise. I am simply smoothing out the syntax. Why is He called the Spirit of Promise? What does this mean? The Spirit of Promise means the Spirit of the divine promise. To promise means to give one’s word. We speak of the Promised Land. Now look carefully at how words change their meaning. Today, when we speak of the Promised Land, we mean the land flowing with milk and honey. But that was not simply the name God gave to a land flowing with milk and honey—that is, to a fertile land. The phrase paints a picture of fruitfulness.

The Promised Land means the land of the promise, the region God had promised to Abraham. That is what “promise” means. And so, my dear ones, when the Holy Spirit came and sealed us at our Baptism, He gave us the promise that we would receive good things—above all, the highest good, which contains every other good: the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God begins even now, and its foretaste begins even now, just as the foretaste of Hell also begins now. We often say, “This person is living through Hell,” just as we say, “This person is living in the Kingdom of God.” Yet it is only a foretaste, a foretaste.

This foretaste is nothing other than the promise of the good things to come. How can I speak of and hope for those future blessings unless the Holy Spirit places this pledge, this promise, within me? Concerning this promise, the Apostle Paul says, “This saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance.” In other words, the word of God is trustworthy. Let me say something about that now. The word of God is trustworthy. The saying is faithful; God is faithful and worthy of trust. This is written before us. I see it, and you see it too. We say that God is trustworthy. Or rather…

trustworthy. The Apostle Paul had personally experienced God’s trustworthiness. It was that opening in heaven of which I spoke, an opening through which an experience is given—one that makes me a different person. So when the Apostle Paul wrote, “This saying is faithful,” he did not write on the basis of what the prophets had said or what he had read, but on the basis of experience. He lived the truth that “this saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance,” worthy to be received. He lived it amid persecution, trials, and terrible circumstances, so that he could say that he died every day: “We were regarded as sheep for slaughter.” He was able to say this.

He could say it because of what I mentioned earlier: those foretastes, those openings in heaven through which he received revelations from the Holy Spirit and gained this experience. This is a great thing, a very great thing. All the martyrs possessed this experience above all. Who can assure me that, if I now offer my life in martyrdom and lose it—as of course I will lose it—

I shall be given another life? Who gives me that assurance? Who promises me this—a promise powerful enough to bring me to the point of laying down my life? The Holy Spirit. He is called the Spirit of Promise. He comes and places within me what I have described: the promise. The Holy Spirit has promised it. This is also why the Holy Spirit is called the pledge…

of the Kingdom of God. A pledge means a promise. Let us not forget that: a pledge is a promise. The wedding has not yet taken place; for now, there is the betrothal. We do not yet possess the Kingdom in its fullness; we have its foretaste. He is also called the Spirit of Grace, as the Apostle says elsewhere: “and has insulted the Spirit of grace.” In the Epistle to the Hebrews, the Apostle Paul speaks of the one who has insulted the Spirit of Grace, and so forth. Why is He called the Spirit of Grace? Because He is the One who gives me God’s gifts of grace. When we speak of grace, we mean something that is given. You know, grace means that you receive something without paying for it.

A gift of grace means precisely this: something I do not pay for, but receive freely. These are the gifts, the graces, of God. We speak of divine grace, meaning the grace of God given to the human person. Without the grace of God, we cannot be saved, because we are sinners. Grace means that the way of salvation is given to us even though we are sinners. By strict justice, no one enters the Kingdom of God. A prisoner sentenced to life can never leave prison unless a pardon is granted. We were prisoners for life in Hades and Hell. Prisoners for life. But grace was granted. That is why Christ descended into Hades: He bestowed grace, and from then on…

grace. Yet this grace is given by the Father, by the Son, and by the Holy Spirit. But pay attention to something here. The Holy Spirit gives us the grace of God. Now listen carefully: the one who insults the Spirit of Grace—Saint Cyril says nothing further here, but I will tell you what the Apostle Paul says in that passage, and you will see the harmony of Holy Scripture. The one who insulted—that is, reviled—the Spirit of Grace has no forgiveness. He has no forgiveness. Now pay attention to what Christ said: whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never receive remission, will never receive forgiveness. The meaning is the same.

This saying of Christ agrees with this passage in the Epistle to the Hebrews, chapter 10, verse 29. I think you can see it very clearly, my dear ones. This is precisely blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Now, what is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? Some people become frightened by this. We shall see what it is at once. What does blasphemy against the Holy Spirit mean? I have told you many times, but I know how an idea can become lodged in our minds: “Have I gone so far as to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit?” Or perhaps an impulse of demonic origin causes me to say or imagine something. My dear ones, because I know how such a thought can become fixed in the mind, especially in someone suffering from obsessive thoughts…

I would answer as follows. Many interpretations have of course been given, but the best is what the Fathers teach: it is refusal to repent. The reason is very simple. Can anyone say that there is a sin which the blood of Christ cannot forgive, as though it were powerless to forgive it? That is absurd, utterly absurd. What, then, does it mean that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is refusal to repent? It means remaining unrepentant. Indeed, the Apostle Paul says the following—and please, tremble at it: if someone rejects the very thing through which he became a Christian, by what else can he possibly be saved?

There is nothing higher. What has he rejected? He has rejected and cast aside the blood of Christ, the sacrifice of Christ. In doing so, he has insulted the Holy Spirit and insulted Christ as well. Then the Apostle Paul asks in the Epistle to the Hebrews: How could there now be any other sacrifice, higher than the sacrifice of Christ, that could forgive you? There is none. That is why I told you to be careful. When we reach the point of rejecting Christ and His sacrifice, we are in danger of entering the realm of refusal to repent—that is, of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit,

of insulting the Spirit of Grace. Do you understand? In our own age, in our own days—and say whatever you wish; I will still tell you plainly—we place political causes above our Church and above our Christ. We do things because a party tells us to, because politics tells us to. We have treated certain things as higher than the Church, higher than Christ. In other words, we put Christ in second place because politics, a party, or an ideology dictates it—whatever that political ideology may be. Take care, lest one day we find ourselves in the realm of refusal to repent and of insulting the Holy Spirit, where nothing can wash us clean any longer.

We can repent. Kazantzakis could have repented, but Kazantzakis did not repent. He did not repent. In such a case, can we hold a memorial service? Suppose someone came to me and said, “Please hold a memorial service for the departed Kazantzakis, so that God may forgive him.” A memorial service cannot be held for him. Do you hear? John the Evangelist says plainly that there is sin leading to death and sin not leading to death, and concerning sin leading to death he says that it is futile to pray. Do you hear? The Apostolic Constitutions, when speaking about memorial services—I believe it is in the eighth book, though I do not remember at this moment—say that if a person was merely sinful, and you hold memorial services and give some of his possessions…

to the poor, and so forth, then we hope in the love of God that He will grant that person some rest, some relief. We do not know how much or in what manner; that belongs to God. We do not know. But if, it says, he lived his entire life in impiety, then even if you distribute his possessions in alms, he will receive no benefit. Under the conditions in which we live today, amid these various political ideologies, we may soon find ourselves in the realm of insulting the Holy Spirit. You have heard! I am innocent before God concerning you, so that no one may say, “He did not warn us.” I take the risk, but I tell you.

It is true. I have seen Christians among us place Marxism above the Church. I have seen them place some form of socialism above the Church. We must speak about these things. Poor man, what are you doing? Do you know what you are doing? Do you know how dangerous this is? I have told you; I am innocent of your blood. God says through the prophet: “If you sound the trumpet for war”—that is, to awaken souls—then, if the souls do not awaken, you are innocent. But if you do not sound the trumpet, then, He says, I will require the blood of those souls at your hand. In other words, I will hold you responsible. I have told you; know this. I have told you plainly, very plainly. We cannot conform ourselves to political ideologies at the expense of our faith.

And let me add this: some ideologies are incompatible with our Christian identity. Realize this: they are incompatible with our Christian identity. Realize it. I have said it, and whether the Church is full at future talks because I said it or becomes empty makes no difference to me. I have told you the truth. If the Church becomes empty and someone says, “I will never go back,” that makes no difference to me. I grieve for that person, but I sounded the trumpet and spoke. Do you hear? I say it once again, for the second time: some ideologies are incompatible with our Christian identity. You cannot hold an atheistic ideology and the Christian faith at the same time. You are mocking and deceiving yourself.

Let us understand this, then, my dear friends. Let us not come to the point of insulting the Spirit of Grace. May God preserve us. Let us continue. “He is also called by many other titles.” What does this mean? Other titles means other names. The Holy Spirit is called by other names as well. “You heard this clearly in the first catechetical lecture.” In the previous catechetical lecture, you heard clearly that “in the Psalms He is sometimes called the Good Spirit and sometimes the Governing Spirit.” Here, “sometimes” means at one time and at another. At one time He is called the Good Spirit, and at another the Governing Spirit, as Saint Cyril explained in the previous catechetical lecture. And in Isaiah—I advise you to turn to Isaiah, chapter eleven, verse two, not to mention the Wisdom of Solomon—

look at the names of the Holy Spirit, and you will be amazed. What does Isaiah say? There He is called the Spirit of Wisdom, the Spirit of Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel, the Spirit of Might, the Spirit of Knowledge, the Spirit of Piety, and the Spirit of the Fear of God. To acquire the fear of God, I need the Holy Spirit. To acquire strength—for here He is called the Spirit of Might—I must have the Holy Spirit. Listen to what the Apostle Paul says. Those titles are found in Isaiah. Now listen to the Apostle Paul: “For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and love and self-control.” The spirit of cowardice...

does it come from us, or from the devil, who darkens our understanding? The Greek word skotoo means “to darken,” and skotosis means “darkening”; this belongs to the devil. The Spirit of Might and the Spirit of Power are the same. It is the same description, the same word, and the same meaning. It is the Holy Spirit. Do you see what the Apostle Paul says? The Spirit—the Spirit of Might. When we ask—and we shall examine this shortly—“What was the spirit of the story?” we mean its underlying meaning. When we ask, “What was the spirit of the matter?” and answer that it was this or that, we are again speaking of its meaning. But here, when we say the Spirit of Might, it does not mean something that merely...

expresses might in some way, but the One who gives might. For the One who gives might, wisdom, or understanding has personal subsistence: He is a Person. We shall examine this a little further on, because it is very important. Now let us continue.

“From all that has been said before and all that is being said now”—that is, from everything discussed in the previous catechetical lecture and everything we are discussing now—the conclusion is this: “Although the titles are many and different, the Holy Spirit is one and the same.” This is what Saint Cyril is deeply concerned to impress upon his catechumens.

The gifts are many and the names are many, but the Holy Spirit is one.

This is what he wants to say and emphasize. Do you remember how many times we have encountered this point? “Living and personally subsisting, and always present together with the Father and the Son.” He says that the Holy Spirit is always present with the Father and the Son, standing together with the Father and the Son. He goes on to emphasize this because, unfortunately, it too has been misunderstood throughout history, just as it is in our own time...

No. “He is not something spoken or breathed from the mouth and lips of the Father or the Son, nor something dispersed into the air, but He has personal subsistence.” The Holy Spirit is not the breath of the Father or the Son. He is not something like what we mean when we speak of...

the spirit of my words. I am now uttering words that reach your ears, “dispersed into the air.” They travel through particles of air: those particles are struck, the sound reaches our eardrums, and we hear. No. When we speak of the Spirit of the Father and the Spirit of the Son, we mean that this Spirit has personal subsistence; He is a Person. He is personal. This is the second point Saint Cyril wants to emphasize—though in truth it may be the first: the Holy Spirit is a Person. The Millennialists, and in earlier times the Pneumatomachians, Macedonius and the others, claimed that the Holy Spirit is not a Person but an energy, whether created...

or uncreated—whichever description they might give it. What do the Millennialists say He is? An energy of God, an operation of God, and not a Person. For this reason, the Millennialists are not only opponents of Christ, because they do not accept Christ as the God-Man, but also opponents of the Holy Spirit. You see, then, why it is necessary to emphasize here that the Holy Spirit has personal subsistence. The same question has also arisen concerning human nature. Materialism says—if you will allow me this comparison—that the human soul, the human spirit, is nothing more than an energy of matter itself. For what, it asks, is the spirit?

It is an energy of matter. And what is consciousness? Read Rosenthal’s Philosophical Dictionary and see how it defines consciousness. It calls it a form of energy that gives rise to self-awareness—a form of energy. Very well. The human soul is not a material energy. It is not even an emanation of the body. It is a distinct reality. It is what truly constitutes the person, the one who possesses consciousness. This is the spirit, and this spirit departs and can be called back. It departs and can be called back. “Lazarus, come forth.” “Child, arise,” He said to the daughter of Jairus.

“I say to you”—to you I say—“Child,” little girl, “arise.” From where did the soul return? It had departed, and it came back. The soul is the person; this is the person, the soul. Therefore, our soul is not an energy of the body or of matter. Consider a candle. When the candle is burning, we may say that the body of the candle is the material part. What, then, is the flame? The flame is an energy, because there is fire; it is an energy. But a human being is not like this. The body is one thing, and the spirit is another. Much more, then, is this true of the Holy Spirit, who is not the breath of God or anything of that kind. He is a...

Person. Let us understand this, my dear friends. This Holy Spirit, then, “speaks, acts, orders the work of salvation, and sanctifies; for the saving dispensation toward us is undivided, harmonious, and one—the dispensation of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, as we have said before.” He is the One who speaks. Who spoke at Pentecost? The Holy Spirit. He speaks. He is the One who acts. He is the One who orders the work of salvation. He is the One who sanctifies. The Holy Spirit says, “Set apart for Me Paul and Barnabas.”

They are the ones whom I shall send to Cyprus.

“Set them apart for Me.” He is a Person. “Set them apart for Me.” And what does the Apostle Peter say to Ananias? “Why have you lied to the Holy Spirit?” And so on. The Holy Spirit acted. Who put Ananias to death? Who put Ananias to death? The Holy Spirit—the One who was insulted. And how was He insulted? Through the lie, because Ananias’s lie was a lie against the Holy Spirit. This is a fearful thing, a fearful thing. Only when someone looks upon Holy Scripture with fresh, unclouded eyes does he begin to reconsider so many things that we live with today. And yet we call ourselves Christians. We say that we are Christians, though I do not know to what extent all of us truly are. Furthermore, the saving dispensation toward us is “undivided,” that is, harmonious...

and one, and it comes from the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. What does this mean? It means that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one essence. The Father acts, the Son exercises the same divine energy, and the Holy Spirit exercises that same divine energy.

In the Holy Trinity there is one divine energy. If you wish, and if you can find a small book or leaflet containing the service of Vespers for Pentecost, read the troparia there and see what a wealth of doctrine they contain: one essence, one divine energy...

an energy proper to that one essence. In the Person of Christ, however, there are two energies. There is the divine energy, which also belongs to the Father and the Holy Spirit, and there is the energy of His human nature, the human energy. Two energies. This is why Monoenergism—the doctrine of one energy in Christ—was condemned by the Church.

There is one will in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. There is no separate will. The will is one. Whatever the Father wills, the Son also wills, and the Holy Spirit also wills. But in Christ there are two wills, because there is the divine nature, whose will is in harmony with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and there is the human nature. This is why Monothelitism—the doctrine of one will in Christ—was condemned by the Church. Thus, only in the Person of Christ—yet He is one Person, not two—do we have the divine and human natures, two energies, and two wills. Then there is the matter of knowledge.

Whatever the Father knows, the Son knows, and the Holy Spirit knows. There is nothing different or hidden that the Father knows but the Son does not. You may object that, when Christ was asked when His Second Coming would take place, He said, “Neither the angels nor the Son know.” He said this—if you will permit the expression—in order to free Himself from the disciples’ questioning. Yes, do not be surprised by the expression I have used: it was so that they would stop asking Him. Christ did not lie. Does the Son truly not know? The Son does know, because the knowledge of the Father is also the knowledge of the Son and the knowledge of the Holy Spirit. Their knowledge is common because their essence is common. As the Son of Man, however, He does not know. Therefore, when He said...

When He said, “the Son does not know,” He meant the Son of Man—what you see before you now, the human nature—and He said it to put an end to their questioning. For in truth, the human nature of Christ does not know the time of the Second Coming, whereas His divine nature does. Does this surprise you? This is why there are two kinds of knowledge in Jesus Christ.

He asks Pilate, “Who told you this that you are saying to Me? Do you say this on your own, or did the Jews tell you?” The Lord is not playacting in any way. He truly does not know. What is it that does not know? His human nature does not know. For there is human knowledge, which is limited, whereas divine knowledge is unlimited.

But because there is one person—

here we have that which is enhypostatic, that is, one person: the two natures exist in one hypostasis in Christ. For this reason, the Son knows, even though His human nature does not know. He knows. Yet He neither lied nor spoke inaccurately. On the basis of all these things, the Church defined the dogmas that She defined. Therefore, in Christ there are two kinds of knowledge, divine and human; two wills, divine and human; and two energies. But in the Triune God there is one common knowledge, one common energy, and one common will.

There is something else that is very important: “The Spirit in the Law and the Prophets is not one Spirit, and the Spirit in the Gospels and the Apostles another; rather, it is one and the same Holy Spirit, who spoke the divine Scriptures in both the Old and the New Testament.” How important this is! The Holy Spirit, he says, is not one in the Old Testament and another in the New. He is the very same Spirit who spoke in the Law. What does he mean by the Law? He means Moses. And by the Prophets, he means the prophecies. The same Holy Spirit spoke in the Gospels and through the Apostles. It is the one Spirit who spoke in both the Old and the New Testament. Pay attention, beloved. You know that—

this idea was first held by the Gnostics—that is where it began—and later by certain modern schools of thought, chiefly Protestant ones. I believe these views are inclined toward Gnosticism; it seems to be something of that kind. They regard the God of the Old Testament as evil. Sadly, such views still exist in our own time: that the God of the Old Testament is one God and the God of the New Testament another. But God is one. John Chrysostom gave a homily on this—or rather, he spoke on this subject—declaring that God is one. He is one. Where do they get the idea that the God of the Old Testament is evil? What do they mean, evil? Indeed, I have told you before, and you know this astonishing truth: there in the Old Testament, the Lord is the Son.

The Lord—the Son, the Son. He who would later become incarnate is the One who is there. He is the One on Sinai, the One in the burning bush, the One present everywhere, the One in the pillar of fire and in the cloud. He is the One who sends down the manna, because He Himself is the true manna that comes down from heaven. He is the rock from which the Hebrews drank water. He is that rock. The Apostle Paul says it plainly: “And the rock,” he says, “that followed them.” What rock follows anyone? You have never seen a rock following people. That physical rock did not follow them, but the rock that truly followed them is Christ. The Apostle Paul says this clearly. And Moses, Scripture says, preferred the reproach of Christ—forgive me—to the treasures of Egypt.

He preferred the reproach of Christ to the treasures of Egypt, even though Moses lived fifteen hundred years before Christ. He sees Christ; he sees Christ. Christ is there before His incarnation: He is God the Word (Logos). It is the same God, then. How can we speak of “the sweetest Jesus of the New Testament” and “the evil God of the Old Testament”? We shall see this when we come to it, for Saint Cyril mentions that the Manichaeans used to say the same thing. They used to say it then, and it is still said today. And let me also tell you this: take note that the same Spirit is present both there and here; He is not another Spirit. It would be strange indeed if He were one thing there and something else here. Today—not even to mention what is found in certain writings—there are some people whose origins I cannot understand. Do their ideas have Masonic roots?

I do not understand what their roots are. Of course, they present themselves as extreme nationalists—nationalists to the utmost degree. But, as you will see shortly, we would be a thousand times better off without nationalists of this kind. We do not need them. We shall love our homeland, and we shall truly love it. But these people do not love their homeland, as I will now show you. It seems that they are not few. They are not many in comparison with the population as a whole, but neither are they few. These people believe—

that Zionism poses a threat to Greece. He agrees that this is a serious concern.

Zionism will destroy Greece. They then conclude that Christianity is actually a Jewish religion and must therefore be cast out. But how are they to cast it out? Christianity is now deeply rooted not only in Greece but throughout the whole world. Can we say that Christianity is a Jewish religion?

It is the continuation of the Old Testament; there is no question about that. But given the form that Judaism takes today, Christianity is not a Jewish religion. Nor is Christianity a heretical offshoot of Judaism. It is the continuation of God’s Revelation. That is what Christianity is. So what do these clever people do? They do the following. They say, “We will attack the Old Testament and declare that it is Jewish—”

“the Jewish religion.” In this way, they supposedly intend to preserve Christianity, with its good God and its gentle Jesus Christ. This is how they speak. They write these things—I have seen them in writing. What is written remains. They speak against the God of the Old Testament in the crudest and most blasphemous manner. And the poor wretches do not realize that He is the very same God. So, beloved, after reviling the God of the Old Testament, they end by speaking about Christianity and saying, “This is our religion, not the Old Testament,” supposedly to prevent Zionism from entering our country. But be assured: their second step will be to attack Christianity, for they have already given indications of an attack against Christ Himself.

You see that these things do not belong only to the past, even though we speak of them here as historical matters. They belong to the present as well. Therefore, we must keep watch and guard, beloved, our faith in the Holy Triune God. But, God willing, we shall continue.

Μπορούσε να το λέει. Ήταν αυτό που σας είπα προηγουμένως, αυτές οι γεύσεις, αυτά τα τρυπήματα του ουρανού, που εδέχετο αυτές τις αποκαλύψεις από το Πνεύμα το Άγιον και είχε την εμπειρία. Είναι μεγάλο πράγμα αυτό, μεγάλο. Αυτή την εμπειρία καταρχάς την είχαν όλοι οι μάρτυρες. Ποιος είναι εκείνος ο οποίος θα με βεβαιώσει ότι εγώ τώρα θα δώσω μαρτυρικά τη ζωή μου και θα τη χάσω, βεβαίως, θα τη χάσω;

απαντούσα. Δεν είναι παρά —βέβαια πολλές ερμηνείες εδώ έδωσαν, πολλές ερμηνείες— αλλά η καλύτερη είναι αυτή που οι Πατέρες λέγουν: είναι η αμετανοησία. Διότι είναι πολύ απλό. Μπορεί κανείς να λέει ότι υπάρχει μια αμαρτία η οποία δεν συγχωρείται με το αίμα του Χριστού, δηλαδή αδυνατεί να συγχωρήσει; Άτοπον, άτοπον. Τι σημαίνει ότι η βλασφημία κατά του Αγίου Πνεύματος είναι η αμετανοησία; Όταν μένεις αμετανόητος. Και μάλιστα εδώ ο Απόστολος Παύλος λέγει το εξής —και τρομάξτε, σας παρακαλώ— λέγει ότι εκείνος ο οποίος αθέτησε εκείνο με το οποίο έγινε χριστιανός, με τι άλλο πια μπορεί να σωθεί;

ή άκτιστη, κατάλληλος; Στους Χιλιαστές τι είναι, λέει; Μια ενέργεια του Θεού, μια δράσις του Θεού, και δεν είναι πρόσωπον. Γι’ αυτό οι Χιλιαστές είναι όχι μόνο χριστομάχοι, διότι δεν δέχονται τον Χριστό Θεάνθρωπο, αλλά είναι και πνευματομάχοι. Βλέπετε λοιπόν την περίπτωση εδώ, ότι είναι ανάγκη να τονιστεί ότι το Πνεύμα το Άγιον είναι ενυπόστατον. Εξάλλου, αυτό ελέχθη και διά την ανθρωπίνη φύση. Ο υλισμός λέγει ότι, αν θέλετε να κάνω μια μεταφορά, ο υλισμός λέγει ότι η ψυχή του ανθρώπου, το πνεύμα του ανθρώπου, δεν είναι παρά μία ενέργεια αυτής ταύτης της ύλης. Διότι τι είναι, λέγει, το πνεύμα;

Τον ονειδισμόν του Χριστού από τους θησαυρούς της Αιγύπτου, όταν ο Μωυσής ζει 1.500 χρόνια προ Χριστού. Βλέπει τον Χριστόν, βλέπει τον Χριστόν. Ο Χριστός είναι εκεί πριν να ενανθρωπήσει, είναι ο Θεός Λόγος. Ο ίδιος λοιπόν είναι. Και μπορούμε να λέμε «ο γλυκύτατος Ιησούς της Καινής» και «ο κακός Θεός της Παλαιάς»; Επίσης, όταν θα φτάσουμε, θα το δούμε αυτό, το αναφέρει, το έλεγαν οι Μανιχαίοι, το έλεγε ο Άγιος Κύριλλος, το έλεγαν οι Μανιχαίοι. Μέχρι σήμερα λέγεται αυτό. Και θα σας πω και το εξής: σημειώστε δε ότι το ίδιο Πνεύμα είναι και εκεί και εδώ, δεν είναι άλλο. Θα ήταν περίεργο πράγμα να είναι κάτι εκεί άλλο, κάτι εδώ άλλο. Σήμερα, για να μην σας αναφέρω και στις γραφές, υπάρχουν κάποιοι άνθρωποι, δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω, μασονική ρίζα έχουνε;

Θα καταστρέψει την Ελλάδα ο Σιωνισμός. Τότε ο Χριστιανισμός, στην πραγματικότητα, είναι μια θρησκεία εβραϊκή, την οποία βέβαια πρέπει να τη βγάλουμε. Αλλά πώς θα τη βγάλουμε; Ελάτε που τώρα είναι ριζωμένος ο Χριστιανισμός όχι μόνο στην Ελλάδα αλλά και σε όλο τον κόσμο. Μπορούμε να πούμε ότι είναι μια εβραϊκή θρησκεία ο Χριστιανισμός;
