Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that every person receives natural abilities through the image of God, while Christians receive a second spiritual endowment through Baptism and Chrismation. Saul received the Spirit’s gift to govern, but jealousy, persistent passions, and disobedience deprived him of grace and led him from persecuting occult practices to consulting a medium. The lecture concludes that both genuine prophecy and its faithful interpretation require the illumination of the Holy Spirit.

Beloved, we are now at paragraph 28 of Saint Cyril’s sixteenth catechetical lecture, which concerns the Holy Spirit. We have seen many things mentioned there. Indeed, as this catechesis now draws to a close, the subject will continue in the tenth—pardon me—the teaching on the Holy Spirit will continue in the next catechesis as well. Here, as we also saw last time, he gives us a great many references from the Old Testament in which the Holy Spirit is present. There are so many that at one point he even says, “Surely you have not grown weary from listening?” In other words, “Have you not become tired from hearing all this?”

Have you grown weary under the weight of all these examples—or rather, all these references? Have you not become tired? Listen to this one, and that one, and yet another. Last time we had already mentioned several examples. I also told you one or two stories to give you a little rest, and we ended with Bezalel, who received the Spirit of God in accordance with the Lord’s promise to Moses that He would give him a spirit of craftsmanship. And I told you that, as you can see, whatever work a person is able to do and accomplish requires the Spirit of God. This may be something God gives a person as a natural ability, because all people have abilities, believers and unbelievers alike.

Our ability comes from God. Exceptional abilities, however, given as particular spiritual gifts, are certainly gifts and charisms of the Holy Spirit. For without God, what can we do? I need only remind you of the third servant in the parable of the talents. He did not make use of his talent, but he did receive it. He received it. That means everyone has received some talent—all people, believers and unbelievers, young and old. Everyone has received one talent or more than one. These talents are humanity’s natural endowment, given by virtue of our creation in the image of God.

Since we were born in the image of God, no person who comes into the world comes without talents, without such an endowment. And this is in addition to the endowment that makes a human being truly human, namely reason and freedom. Are reason and freedom small talents? Certainly not. Beyond these, people receive other talents as well, once again by virtue of the image of God within us. But when a person comes to believe in God—that is, when he is baptized and becomes a Christian—he is then received by God a second time: first as His creature, and second...

through adoption, what we call adoption by grace. He then receives a second endowment. Whenever we speak of these things, it is always this second endowment that we mean. We are not speaking about the first endowment, which comes through the image of God within us, but about what we received through Baptism—and through Chrismation, the Mystery of Chrismation. We thus receive this second endowment. This is the point on which I insist and about which I wish to speak, because someone might simply say, “But what about all those engineers and architects? When the text tells us that Bezalel had a spirit of craftsmanship, do we not also have wonderful craftsmen outside the Church and outside the faith?” Yes, indeed, that is true—but they have this by virtue of the first...

endowment, the image of God within us, as I have told you. I say this so that there may be no misunderstanding. Saint Cyril now continues, although it is impossible for us to recount all the stories he mentions. I shall simply go through the text, perhaps pausing at only one or two points to fill out our time. Whatever we do not manage to cover need not trouble us, because essentially only two pages of the book remain. Since these are references to instances of the Holy Spirit’s activity in the Old Testament, we shall not discuss them all. With today’s subject, then, we should consider the sixteenth catechetical lecture complete and proceed to the seventeenth, which, as I told you, again concerns the Holy Spirit, but with...

examples from the New Testament. But let me tell you something here. Those of you who have the book may find, after the end of the sixteenth catechetical lecture, a section entitled “Addition to the Sixteenth Catechesis.” We should take note, however, of the footnote beneath it. It says: “The first part, the first paragraph”—the whole addition is only one page—“the text above is an excerpt taken from the catechetical discourse of Saint Gregory of Nyssa. As for the second part, the second paragraph, it has not been possible to determine to which author it belongs. The above passages are contained in the Codex Coislinianus, a manuscript of the tenth...”

or eleventh century.” This addition, then, does not belong to the sixteenth catechetical lecture. Consequently, we shall not analyze it. That settles the matter. And now we return to our text, paragraph 28: “By the power of this Spirit, as we read in Judges, Othniel judged, Gideon was strengthened, Jephthah conquered, Deborah the woman made war, and Samson, as long as he acted righteously and did not grieve the Spirit, performed deeds beyond human power.” He is referring, then, to the Spirit of God in the Judges. Of course, these were the Judges. Could the Judges possibly have been without the Spirit of God?

This period of the Judges, as you know, came before the monarchy—that is, before King Saul—and the people were governed by the Judges. The Hebrews at that time had a very unusual form of government, truly unlike any other form of government found anywhere in the world or in the history of political systems. It resembled none of them. And so, when someone reads the Old Testament—especially with the aid of commentaries that explain the text—he finds a great many things to reflect upon. One of them is what I am telling you now: that...

this people were organized—how shall I put it? In a certain town there would be a Judge, and those involved in disputes would go to him, and so forth. The towns had no particular government of their own. There was no unified structure, no people in the sense of a state. There was simply the concept of a people or a nation—or, more precisely, a people. Remember also that the Hebrews, especially during the period of the Judges, had not gone beyond the boundaries God had appointed for them through Moses. Moses, of course, did not enter the Promised Land, but the boundaries were established as God had commanded and as Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ successor, carried out. As I told you, it was a very unusual situation.

It was a people among whom, in a manner of speaking, each person governed his own household. That is why one of the Psalms—I believe it is Psalm 127—says, “Blessed is the man who has many children, for they will defend him when the need arises.” In an organized state—take a modern organized state—we have the police and the army. At that time, during the period of the Judges, there was not even an army. An army, together with what we call a state, first appeared under Saul, with the establishment of the monarchy. A believer might perhaps wonder about this. I have told you countless times that Israel, meaning the people of Israel...

was a people like the ordinary peoples of the earth. The fact that it later fell into cunning, and that today we speak of the Zionists, is another matter altogether. This people was a typological people: it did nothing other than reflect the Kingdom of God. It reflected the Kingdom of God. Israel, in other words, was a historical forerunner and type, a foreshadowing—just as I told you during the question period when we spoke about Hell. Sodom and Gomorrah are a historical type and foreshadowing of Hell. In the same way, Israel is a historical type and foreshadowing of the Kingdom of God. This is precisely why the land in which Israel dwelt was called the Promised Land, the land of promise, because the Promised Land in the fullest and truest sense is the Kingdom of God.

It is the new earth. “I saw a new heaven,” John the Evangelist says in the Apocalypse, “and a new earth.” Palestine, then, is a type and foreshadowing of that new earth, of the Kingdom of God. This is very significant. For this reason, this people had God alone as its ruler. That is why it was called a theocratic people. Yet, as we know, human beings need other human beings to govern them. God therefore gave them the Judges, who acted on God’s behalf to settle matters that were perhaps rather serious, or at times even to wage war.

The Judges would organize a war, gathering whomever they could in order to fight. If the period of the Judges were judged according to the political systems that have existed among the nations, we would say that it was the worst form of government that could ever have existed on earth—the very worst. The same would be true if we were to judge Israel’s journey after the people left Egypt and were guided by God. He did not lead them through that narrow passage which later became the Suez Canal, although that was where the people would ordinarily have had to pass, because the land of Goshen lay east of Egypt. The crossing was therefore close at hand. Thank you.

That was where everyone had to pass—the merchants, the camels, all the trade moving back and forth. There was no other way. Yet God said to Moses, “You will turn south.” God Himself directed him: “You will turn south.” Even the worst military commander would not have made such a mistake. Even the least experienced muleteer would not have made it. Go south? How would they cross? Where could they pass? We know the geography of Africa. One might say that Africa is an island; in essence, it is an island. It was joined, and remains joined, to Asia by that small strip of dry land, which was later cut through to form the canal. In essence, then, Africa is an island. So how were they to reach the Promised Land?

I insist on giving you this rather vivid description because I want you to see and understand something very important. God was preparing their passage through the Red Sea. That is the point! At the same time, He had to reveal His power and His miracle, and also drown and punish the Egyptians. “But where are we going?” “No, southward, southward.” And when the people saw the Egyptians behind them, they cried out, “Oh, what is going to happen to us!” Pharaoh said, “On one side they have the mountains, the Ataka Mountains—that is what those mountains are called. On the other side is the sea. To the north, there is me. I have caught them in a trap.”

“As for me? These are Your people, Lord,” Moses said. “Yes; in the morning you will see My power.” God, then, was not a poor military commander. He had something to reveal. The same is true here: when He governed His people in this way, through what we might call the worst possible form of government...

it was as though there were hardly any people on the earth—perhaps only a few thousand—and someone said to them, “Go on, scatter yourselves across the open expanse of the earth, over its surface, its skin, its outer crust, and live however you wish, like nomads. We have no need of laws; we need nothing.” Do you understand what this means? A people. God wanted to show that...

He Himself was their ruler. He said it plainly. They asked for a monarchy and wanted to organize themselves as a state. According to ordinary human reasoning, we would say that they thought correctly. “But Lord, let us organize ourselves.” “Why?” God said. “Am I not pleasing to you? Listen: are you not content to have Me govern you? Very well, take a monarchy. I will give you a monarchy. But you will suffer under political systems”—and indeed they did. Political systems create the state, but at the same time they often make the citizens suffer. Do you disagree? This is what happened. Let us continue. God wanted to reveal a type and foreshadowing of His Kingdom: that in His Kingdom He alone will govern, and no one else. Consequently, Israel is a type and foreshadowing of the Kingdom...

of God. The present situation is something different—take care to understand this. Today it is something different. It is no longer relevant in the same way, for Israel is no longer the typological people. To be more precise, however, it continues to be a typological people in only one respect—or, if you wish, in two. The first is that God permits this people to endure—or to have endured, and to continue enduring until today, for we are in the last days—an exemplary punishment for its apostasy. That is the first. The second is that this people was not to disappear. Moses says clearly, “I will not wipe you from the earth,” for two reasons. The first is that you may remain a living example of the punishment of your God, whom you deny.

The second reason is for the sake of those who will seek salvation through the preaching of the two prophets who will return to the earth. One is Elijah, and the other is Enoch. As the Apostle Paul says, this will be the final opportunity for the Jews to be saved. They will come last in the salvation that Christ brought into the world. They were first, but they were placed last. Of course, not all of them will believe, but only those who are to believe. And this will be the final act of history.

The final act. I have said these few things because he mentioned the Judges here as an example, and we saw that the Spirit of God was with the Judges. For we said, “But they were abandoned, utterly abandoned!” No, the Judges were not abandoned. They had the Holy Spirit, who guided them each time in how they should act. We see this very clearly. Read the Book of Judges, and you will see it. One last thing he says here about Samson: “As long as he acted righteously and did not grieve the Spirit, he performed deeds beyond human power.” That is, he carried out superhuman feats while he did not grieve the Holy Spirit. But if we begin going into all these stories, you understand, my beloved, that we will never finish. So he moves on. The last Judge, as you know, was Samuel. “For concerning Samuel and David, we have it plainly in the Books of Kingdoms...”

“In the Holy Spirit they prophesied, and they themselves were leaders of prophets. Therefore Samuel was called the Seer; while David plainly says, ‘The Spirit of the Lord spoke in me’; and in the Psalms, ‘Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me’; and again, ‘Your good Spirit shall guide me on level ground.’” He is referring to Samuel, the last Judge. Samuel anointed Saul as king. And it was God who gave them Saul, after the Hebrews had asked for a king. But because Saul proved unworthy, God removed him from the kingship and raised up David. All of you know this.

Here he refers to Samuel—and to David. As 1 Kingdoms, chapter 9, verse 9, tells us, Samuel “was called the Seer,” the one who saw. With what eyes did he see? He saw with the eyes of the Holy Spirit. And David is the one who says in his Psalms, “And Your Holy Spirit”—as we say in Psalm 50—“do not take from me.” Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. For if I am left bereft of Your Holy Spirit, what can I do? My beloved, I say this day and night. I beg you to say it as well.

Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me, Lord. I am a sinner; I sin. I am not what You would have me be. We are striving, just as you who are listening to me are striving. But do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. For if I am left bereft of Your Holy Spirit, then I will no longer be able to do anything—anything at all. I could do the most foolish things. I could do things that would plunge me into the abyss. Yes, because when God abandons someone—and by “abandons” I mean that He takes away the Holy Spirit—from that point onward, the person sets out on the road to his own destruction. Yes, to his own destruction. I have told you this before, and I will say it once again. I fear that at the end...

of history, when the time draws near for Christ to return, and people have surrendered themselves to the Antichrist and worshipped the Antichrist, I fear that Christ will have withdrawn the Holy Spirit from the world—that is, from those people. This is why they will be unable to repent. Listen carefully to this. Someone might quite simply say, “But if I see that things are otherwise and that I have been deceived, will I not be able to repent and change?” No, indeed. I fear—and we find testimony to this in Holy Scripture, in the Apocalypse—that they will be unable to repent, because the Holy Spirit will have been withdrawn.

That is what “withdrawn” means: taken away. And we cannot repent without the Holy Spirit. Let me remind you of something from the Apocalypse. God inflicts a very painful plague so that people may repent, yet the holy Evangelist John tells us that instead of repenting, they blasphemed God. You see, when a person receives a blow from God in order to bring him to repentance, but still does not repent, he remains hardened. And as the heart grows hardened, the Holy Spirit is withdrawn. Do you know why Saul became what he became? Listen. These are terrifying things, truly terrifying. Simply reading them fills a person with horror.

When one sees these things that happened in the past and were recorded being repeated among the people around us, it is horrifying. Listen, my beloved. When Saul was anointed king, he received the Holy Spirit. He could not have been king without the Holy Spirit, especially since it was God who raised Saul up. He received an anointing: Samuel the Prophet went and anointed Saul as king. By virtue of this anointing, Saul received the gift of governing the people of God—a gift from the Holy Spirit. But Saul did not take care to purify his heart. He was ruled by the passions.

Every human being is ruled by the passions. Pay attention to me: every human being is ruled by the passions. Saul did not take care to purify his heart. And so, alongside the Spirit of God, which he had received in order to govern the people, he retained his own personal enslavement to the passions. He was jealous. When David defeated Goliath and the people began singing and dancing in the streets, saying, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands,” Saul’s soul grew dark. “What! Is this shepherd boy greater than I, the king?” His soul darkened; it became black. And then...

his enslavement to the passions turned into melancholy. For you know that when a passion persists for a long time, what we now call psychological problems begin to appear, to use a modern expression. So Saul began to sink into melancholy. David was then asked to serve in the palace by chanting and playing his lyre to soothe Saul. But Saul had become dark, utterly dark, and David standing before him was a provocation in himself. From his throne Saul seized his spear and hurled it at...

David to kill him. David was playing the lyre, and as soon as he realized that the spear was coming toward him, he barely managed to move his head aside and escape it. After that, he left, and from then on Saul hunted him. But let me not go into too much detail. Saul began to lose the grace of God, and in the end he lost it completely. When did this happen? When Samuel the Prophet received a command from God: “Go and find David, and anoint him king.” Here, of course, I have told the story somewhat out of order, as you understood. But I wanted to make it a little more vivid, and that does not matter. David was first anointed king, without Saul knowing him, and afterward he was brought into the palace. That is the point I gave out of sequence. But never mind. The result...

The result.

Saul was left bereft of divine grace, bereft of the Holy Spirit. When he was in his right state—that is, when he had the Spirit of God—he wanted to cleanse his country of sorcerers and witches, male and female spiritists, and all those who dealt in demonic things. For this reason, he had given an explicit command that such people were to be arrested and put to death, even burned. But then Saul reached a state of despair. What brought him to despair? The Philistines attacked him. Desperate, he did not know what to do. Should he fight or not? How was he to fight?

He asked the High Priest, and the High Priest, by means of that special priestly vestment—if I may use a modern expression—was to answer what they should do. But the High Priest replied, “God does not answer.” Yes, my beloved, God does not answer. Saul fell into despair. Then he removed his royal garments, took a small escort, and went looking for some sorcerer or witch. The man who had persecuted sorcerers now took refuge with a witch. Strictly speaking, she was not a witch but a medium. And spiritism, as you know, is something even worse than sorcery—something still worse.

A spiritist invokes spirits, and especially evil spirits. So they went and found her at night, and she supposedly summoned the spirit of Samuel, for Samuel the Prophet had died by then. He appeared and said, “Why have you summoned me?” and so forth—you know the account from Holy Scripture. Then he told Saul, “You will lose the battle, and you yourself will be killed.” At this, that enormous man, nearly two meters tall—the most handsome man in Israel, Scripture says, and the tallest—fell full-length to the ground. He fainted. The woman then brought some food for them to eat. He did not want to eat, but they pressed him until he did. And who was this man?

Saul, who had lost the Holy Spirit. Because he had lost the Holy Spirit, the very man who had forbidden sorcerers and witches to exist ended up resorting to sorcery. So we see that when someone loses the Holy Spirit, he begins tumbling down the steps of degradation. Did you hear that? This is why, my beloved, it is so fearful. We must pray, “Lord, never take Your Holy Spirit from us.” David had lived through all these events; he had experienced them all. That is why he could write what I quoted to you from Psalm 50: “And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.” Do not take Him away.

As he says in Psalm 142, “Your good Spirit shall guide me on level ground.” The One who will guide me along the straight path is none other than Your Holy Spirit. If I have Your Holy Spirit, I fear nothing. If I do not have Your Holy Spirit, I have lost everything. This is what I want us to understand, and to understand very well. Let us move on. He next refers to other kings. I will pass to paragraph 29, so as not to dwell on too many details. Here he begins giving examples from the prophets. Was it not the Apostle Peter who said that the prophets, holy men, spoke by the Spirit of God, and that it was the Holy Spirit who bestowed...

what we call prophecy? He refers to Joel. I will make a brief comment about Joel, because his prophecy is carried over into the New Testament. “And Joel cries out: ‘And it shall come to pass afterward, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh,’” and so forth. Through the Spirit of God, Joel prophesies about the Holy Spirit. Through the Spirit of God, he prophesies about the Holy Spirit whom people would receive in the last days. And this refers to nothing other than the day of Pentecost. As you know, the Apostle Peter used this prophecy of Joel...

as recorded in the Book of Acts. He came out, so to speak, onto the balcony of the Upper Room and addressed the people who had gathered outside because of the coming of the Holy Spirit: “What have you come out to see? I tell you, this event is nothing other than the coming of the Holy Spirit.” And he brings forward precisely this prophecy. Inspired by God, the Apostle Peter applies the prophecy and declares that it is being fulfilled. For do not forget—do not forget—the Apostle Peter says in one of his epistles that you need the Spirit of God in order to write a prophecy. Pay attention to this.

You also need the Spirit of God in order to interpret a prophecy. You cannot interpret a prophecy unless you have the Spirit of God. Notice that in this case—if I may say it, and if it is not too bold—the one who prophesies will be a prophet, and the one who interprets will also be a prophet. Yes. So what do we do? When we make use of the prophecies, we always follow the interpretations given by holy men. And who, we might ask, has given us the supreme interpretation? Jesus Christ. Whenever He refers to an ancient prophecy, the Lord gives its interpretation—the Lord Himself. His is the supreme interpretation. No one can ever interpret a prophecy unless he also has the Spirit of God, the prophetic gift. Thus the Apostle Peter, now endowed at Pentecost with the Holy Spirit, interprets Joel’s prophecy and says, “Is it not written that in the last days, ‘I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh’?” and so forth. As you understand, he is explaining that the whole people would now receive the Holy Spirit abundantly, not sparingly, provided they believed in the name of Jesus Christ. We all have the Holy Spirit.

We have been baptized. But do not forget that in many people—I would not want to say in everyone; no, that would be an exaggeration—the Holy Spirit is present in potential, but not in actuality. We have Him, but the Spirit of God does not act within us, because our way of life does not allow Him to do so. But if we correct our lives according to the commandments of Christ, then the Holy Spirit acts within us. Then the Holy Spirit is active in us and is no longer merely present in potential. That is my very brief comment on the Prophet Joel. Just one more thing: although I have explained what is meant by “the last days,” it will do no harm to tell you again.

The term “the last days” is used for every manifestation of God. The first manifestation, the first coming, is the Incarnation. Therefore, everything relating to the first coming of God—in this case, God the Word, that is, Jesus Christ—belongs to what are called the last days. When Christ comes again, those days will also be called the last days. Consequently, we have two comings and two periods called the last days. We should know this, because otherwise we will not be able to understand the prophecies.

We read a prophecy, and it says that what it describes will happen in “the last days.” Does that mean the end of the world? Because heretics do not have the Spirit of God—in this case, the Millenarians—they interpreted it this way: “The last days,” they say, do not mean Pentecost, but the time when the world is coming to an end. Then people will receive the Holy Spirit in great abundance. They claim—listen to this—that we will receive more than the Apostles received. Listen: more than the Apostles received! And they say that those who believe in the millenarian heresies possess this abundant outpouring of the Spirit. Listen to these things so that you may know, because these people are still troubling our people, our Christians, with their heresies. So, as I have explained, there are two periods called the last days. And the proof—allow me to add this as well—is that Joel’s prophecy is composed and worded in such a way that it refers to both periods.

Listen. It says, “In the last days I will pour out of My Spirit.” Notice the verb “pour out.” It means that I take a pitcher, a basin, or some large vessel filled with water—and this is what “pour out” conveys—and empty it out. It signifies the abundant gift of the Holy Spirit. Further on, when that passage is completed, it says, “And then.” When is “then”? “And then the sun will be darkened, and the moon also, and the great and glorious day of the Lord is coming.” When will that be? When Christ comes again.

This single passage refers to both periods of the last days. It is a fine and typical example of a prophecy containing both meanings of the term. I have told you this to help you understand how the prophecy is interpreted. Saint Cyril then goes on to mention the other prophets. What can we say, he asks, about the Prophet Isaiah, whose voice resounds so mightily? In the thirtieth section he says, “Whatever we may say, however much we may say, there is still so much more.” For all the prophets, Glory to God, had the Spirit of God. He says, “You also have this in Ezekiel. Or perhaps you have grown weary from listening?” This is what I told you at the beginning. If you have not grown weary from listening—and now I, too, address you who are listening to me—if you also have not grown weary of hearing me.

“It has already been said: ‘And the Spirit fell upon me and said to me, Speak: Thus says the Lord. Speak: Thus says the Lord.’” The Prophet Ezekiel says this about himself: the Holy Spirit fell upon him and told him to prophesy. Here Saint Cyril makes a brief comment, and it is very beautiful. He says, “The words ‘fell upon me’ must be understood correctly, for He truly fell upon him as one who loves tenderly. In the same way, when Jacob found Joseph, he fell upon his neck; and in the Gospels, when the loving father saw his son returning from a distant country, he had compassion, ran to him, fell upon his neck, and kissed him.” This is beautiful for the following reason. The prophet says, “The Spirit fell.” The verb “to fall” means that I am holding an object, let it go, and it falls. Therefore, when it falls—especially from a height—it accelerates and gathers greater speed. If someone dropped a small stone onto my head from four inches above, it would not kill me. But if that stone fell from a height of five hundred yards, it would crush me. It would have tremendous force. Why, then, does he use the verb “fell”? He uses it to show the tender love of the Holy Spirit when He comes upon the prophet. And he says:

When Jacob found his son Joseph in Egypt, he said, “My child, are you Joseph?” Then Jacob fell upon his son and kissed him again and again. Likewise, in the Gospel, the parable of the Prodigal Son tells us that when the father’s wayward son returned,

“he fell upon him and kissed him tenderly”; it says, “he fell upon his neck.” The neck here means the back of the neck, and “he kissed him tenderly,” kissing him again and again. What does this show? Tender affection. My dear ones, the Holy Spirit often falls with great force upon the one He loves.

It is as though He is hurrying, as though He gathers momentum to come to him. Take care: these are human ways of describing divine realities. The Spirit of God is everywhere and fills all things. “O Heavenly King, who fills all things.” When we say “O Heavenly King,” we are speaking to the Holy Spirit: “who fills all things.” There is nowhere that the Spirit of God is not present, because He fills all things. Why? Because the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit possess the one divine essence. The essence is one. Therefore, when we speak of the Spirit “falling upon” someone and similar things, this would normally mean that I am here and then go there. But God is here as well. The Holy Spirit is both here and there. There can be no literal falling or gathering of momentum, since He is everywhere. As Aristotle rightly said, God is the one who moves all things.

Yet He Himself is unmoved. He is the first unmoved mover. He imparts motion, but God Himself is unmoved. Why is He unmoved? What does that mean? It means that God fills all things. He is not here and then needs to go there by moving from one place to another. Consequently, when it says that the Spirit “fell upon” someone, it means that He embraces that person with force and tender love. If only we could grasp, my dear ones, how deeply the Spirit of God loves us! Do you know how much He loves us? As much as the Son does. The Son cannot love us more than the Holy Spirit does. And you know how much the Son loves us: He went so far as to be crucified for us.

Do you know how much the Son loves us? As much as the Father does. The Father cannot love us any less than the Son and the Holy Spirit do. And you know how much the Father loves us.

He sent His Son into the world so that the world might be saved. The Spirit of God loves us, and this is why the Apostle Paul says, “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.” Because He loves us, the Holy Spirit is grieved on our account when we sin, my dear ones. In the thirty-first section, Saint Cyril speaks about Daniel. Here, apparently to give his catechumens a little rest, Saint Cyril tells a story from Daniel. I will tell it to you as well, though not in full, because it is a long story. It is found in the book of Susanna, which comes before the other books of the Old Testament, though it is, of course, regarded as part of the book of Daniel.

It is called “Susanna,” and it comes before the main body of the book of Daniel. If you wish, look it up when you go home. I trust that you all have a copy of the Old Testament. If you do not, obtain one with explanatory notes to help you, because the Old Testament can be somewhat difficult, and read the story. What is it about? Saint Cyril first says, “The Holy Spirit again made Daniel’s soul wise, so that the young man might become the judge of elders.” The Spirit of God, he says, gave wisdom to this boy—Daniel may have been seventeen or eighteen years old—so that he could stand as a judge, and indeed judge elderly magistrates. How did this happen? Listen. There were once two elders...

They were elders in age—that is, elderly men—but they also held the office of judge. They conducted trials in the home of a certain Jew. These events took place not in Nineveh during the captivity—forgive me—but in Babylon, during the second captivity. The first was the Assyrian captivity of the Northern Kingdom, and the second was the captivity under Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. The Jews had by then settled there. What else could they do? A Jewish man had acquired a house and lived there, and he made it available for trials to be held. These two judges saw the wife of this Jewish man. He was devout, and his wife, Susanna, was also deeply devout.

And yet, they fell into temptation. There was a pool in the garden—a beautiful garden with a pool—and it was surrounded by a high wall. They planned to sin with this woman, the wife of the man whose house they were using. You see, may God preserve us: sin knows no age. Let no one say, “I cannot catch fire now that I have grown old.” I will repeat something I once read: old chimneys catch fire more easily. Did you hear that? Did you hear? Never trust in yourself and say, “Surely not me?” Yes, you, my brother. Saint Nilus of Sinai says, “Never consider yourself safe from the demon of fornication until your death.” Only then do we have hope that nothing will happen to us—hope, not certainty.

We must believe what I am telling you: I may fall into sin even in old age. Do not soothe yourself with false assurances. So what did these men do? They hid in the garden. When the trials were finished and everyone had left, they remained hidden there. It was hot. Susanna said to her maidservants, “I would like to bathe. Are the garden gates closed?” They told her, “They are closed.” They brought her what she needed for her bath and then left. Susanna entered the water to bathe. The two men then rushed toward her and threatened her: “Either you yield to our desire, or we will cry out and say that there was a young man here...”

“You intended to sin with him, and we will sentence you to death. Do you understand?” Listen to that! She groaned, cried out to God, and said, “I will never consent to this. I prefer death. I will never commit this sin; I would rather die.” Then they began shouting, claiming that they had seen a young man there, and so on. The people came running. Susanna was put on trial. They condemned her to death and were taking her outside the city to stone her. On the way, they met Daniel. He was only a boy. Daniel asked, “What is happening?” They explained the matter to him. He said, “Are you going to condemn this woman so readily?”

Then the Spirit of God illumined him, and he cried, “Go back! The case must be retried, to use a modern expression.” So they returned to the house. Daniel said, “Take one of the judges and put him somewhere apart.” Then he said to him, “Tell me and describe exactly what happened. Behind what tree were you hiding?” He answered, “Behind a mastic tree.” “Very well, take him away. Bring the other one. Now tell me what happened.” Here came the contradiction. “Behind what tree were you hiding when you witnessed the incident?” He named a different tree. Their stories contradicted one another, and then all the corruption within them was exposed.

They had viciously slandered Susanna. The two judges were then condemned to death, and Susanna was saved. Saint Cyril now says, “Do you see how the Spirit of God illumined the boy—this mere boy, Daniel—so that he could reopen the case and discover the true culprits?” This is extremely important. And there is something more. The text itself puts it this way—let me read to you how the book of Susanna describes it: “And he cried aloud, for God stirred up the holy spirit of a young boy.” Do you see? God—the Spirit of God—stirred his spirit, that is, his...

thought, so that he would seek out those who were truly guilty. And there is something else. Saint Cyril now refers to Daniel when he had grown older, when he was wise and renowned and was in the service of Nebuchadnezzar. He says the following—and with this we shall conclude: “Belteshazzar, chief of the enchanters...” Let me begin from the start: “Nebuchadnezzar also knew that the Holy Spirit was in Daniel.” Even Nebuchadnezzar recognized that the Holy Spirit was in Daniel. “For he says to him...”

Belteshazzar was Daniel’s Babylonian name. He and the three youths naturally had Hebrew names, but Nebuchadnezzar changed them. “Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, this I know...” He says, “You who are the chief of the magicians, I know this: that the Holy Spirit of God is in you.” This is in chapter four, verse twenty-nine. You see, Nebuchadnezzar acknowledges it. And here Saint Cyril comments—and his comment is important—“He spoke one truth and one falsehood. That Daniel had the Holy Spirit was true; but that he was chief of the magicians was false, for he was not a magician, but was wise through the Holy Spirit,” and so on. Nebuchadnezzar, of course, was not a believer. Saint Cyril says that he spoke one truth and one lie.

The truth was that Daniel truly had the Holy Spirit. The lie was that he was chief of the magicians. Daniel was never chief of the magicians. Pay close attention to this, because I have used it to tell you, my beloved, that the devil often speaks to people and tells them some truths mixed with some lies. He blends them together. Indeed, our theologians and the Fathers also say this: even if the devil tells you ninety-nine truths and one lie, he has gained something. For in the end, when you accept all one hundred things he has offered you on the strength of the ninety-nine truths, you will accept the lie as well.

I too make this comment because it is useful, and we must be extremely careful about it. And as Saint Cyril concludes the sixteenth catechetical lecture, he says here: “God willing, if God wills, we shall return again in the next catechesis.” We shall return in the following catechetical lecture to speak once more about the Spirit of God. “Spare due thought also for the proper measure of your listening.” For we must take into account the proper measure of listening, so that we do not weary our listeners any further. Here, then, the sixteenth catechetical lecture comes to an end. If God wills and deems it fitting, with His help we shall begin the seventeenth catechetical lecture next Monday. God willing. Thank you.

ενδεκάτου αιώνος. Δηλαδή, αυτή η προσθήκη δεν ανήκει στην δεκάτην έκτη κατήχηση. Συνεπώς, δεν θα την αναλύσουμε. Είναι περίπτωσις. Και τώρα επανερχόμεθα στο κείμενό μας. 28η παράγραφος. «Ἐν τῇ δυνάμει τούτου τοῦ Πνεύματος, καθὼς ἔχομεν ἐν Κριταῖς, Γοθονιὴλ μὲν ἔκρινε, Γεδεὼν δὲ ἐνεδυναμώθη, ἐνίκησε δὲ Ἰεφθάε, Δεβόρρα δὲ ἡ γυνὴ ἐπολέμει, καὶ Σαμψὼν ἕως ἐδικαιοπράγει καὶ μὴ ἐλύπει τὸ Πνεῦμα, τὰ ὑπὲρ ἄνθρωπον ἐνήργει». Αναφέρεται εις τους Κριτάς το Πνεύμα του Θεού, λέγει. Βεβαίως, ήταν οι Κριταί. Ήταν δυνατόν ποτέ να μην έχουν το Πνεύμα του Θεού οι Κριταί;

Εκεί έπρεπε να περάσουν, δηλαδή όλοι οι έμποροι, οι καμήλες, πέρα δώθε το εμπόριο, από εκεί έπρεπε να περάσουν, δεν υπήρχε άλλος τρόπος. Οπότε ο Θεός λέει στον Μωυσέα: «Θα τραβήξεις προς Νότον». Ο Θεός καθοδηγεί: «Θα τραβήξεις προς Νότον». Ο χειρότερος στρατηγός δεν θα έκανε αυτό το λάθος. Ο τελευταίος αγωγιάτης δεν θα έκανε αυτό το λάθος. Να πάει προς Νότον; Από πού θα περάσει; Από πού θα περάσει; Είναι γνωστή η Αφρική. Μπορεί να πει κανείς ότι η Αφρική είναι μία νήσος. Ουσιαστικά είναι μία νήσος. Ενώθηκε με την Ασία, ενώνεται με την Ασία, με το κομματάκι την ξέρα. Κόπηκε, έγινε και διώρυγα. Ουσιαστικά λοιπόν η Αφρική είναι ένα νησί. Από πού θα πήγαινε λοιπόν στη γη της Επαγγελίας;

Έμεινε έρημος Θείας Χάριτος, έρημος Αγίου Πνεύματος. Όταν ήταν στα καλά του, δηλαδή είχε το Πνεύμα του Θεού, ήθελε να καθαρίσει τη χώρα του από τους μάγους και τις μάγισσες, τους πνευματιστάς και τις πνευματίστριες και από όλους εκείνους που ασχολούνται με δαιμονικά πράγματα. Γι' αυτόν τον λόγο είχε δώσει εντολή, ρητή εντολή, να συλλαμβάνονται οι τέτοιοι άνθρωποι και να φονεύονται, να καίονται. Όταν έφτασε σε μια απόγνωση ο Σαούλ —ποια απόγνωση;— του επετέθησαν οι Φιλισταίοι. Απηλπισμένος, τι να κάνει, τι να κάνει; Να πολεμήσει, να μην πολεμήσει, πώς να πολεμήσει;
